First look at the iPhone X - all the pros and cons. Face ID scanner

It's kind of weird to discuss the display of a phone that didn't go on sale. But in in this case just a few facts about him are enough to draw three disappointing conclusions.

The Diamond Pentile itself is okay: the order was invented to maximize the resolution of the matrix by placing as many pixels as possible. The problem is in the very idea of Pentile and how it affects the image.

The negative trait of Pentile is orange-yellow "frames" and highlights around the sharp edges of the image. This is best seen in fonts. At the same time, you will need to peer so closely into the screen that you are unlikely to notice artifacts.

Text in such a pixel arrangement may look unnatural after years of using smartphones with LCD screens. Some people do not perceive Pentile at all, noticing differences in the arrangement of pixels in bright colors and white backgrounds.

We will know the real situation only after the beginning. iPhone sales X. But if you hate Samsung displays in the latest flagships, then do not be surprised to see the same in the top iPhone.

By the way, Diamond Pentile has an interesting "a plus": The pixel arrangement itself ensures a natural smoothing of the image, which should make text and pixel art in general a little more pleasing to the eye.

Total. OLED is still the future

Whether you like it or not, most likely all future Apple smartphones will be equipped exactly OLED screen.

It saves energy better than LCD displays, delivers true blacks and the highest contrast, and allows for many new and useful functions- for example, the constant display of the clock and the status bar on the off screen.

In this sense, the iPhone X is not just a "new" iPhone. Apple is testing too many new technologies and ideas on it. As for me, this is actually a new device, the birth of a truly different smartphone, minimally continuing the line of iPhones.

It looks great, especially in a light version (with a shiny silver edging), it sits great in the hand - something like regular iPhone 6 / 6s / 7/8.

Apple iPhone X smartphone

We only note that in order to avoid cracks on the glass, it is better to carry the smartphone in a case - then it is unlikely to be damaged if dropped. In the case, by the way, the camera protrusion is hidden, but the elegance of the smartphone is also lost.

Screen

To be honest, the iPhone X screen is the part that disappointed us the most about the device. First, we have already said that it is executed according to OLED technology, and uses the "checkerboard" placement of subpixels PenTile. On the one hand, yes, the screen still has better color rendition than many Samsung flagships (which, we recall, produces these screens for Apple), on the other hand, it is still not IPS, which stands in the same.

Compare the screen width of the iPhone X (bottom) and iPhone 8 Plus

Secondly, the size itself let us down. We expected to get a bigger screen than the 8 Plus in a smaller package. In fact, it turned out that the screen of the iPhone 8 Plus is still ... larger than that of the iPhone X!

Look, the diagonal of the iPhone X is 5.8 inches, and the 8 Plus is 5.5 inches. However, it has a different aspect ratio - 19.5: 9 instead of 16: 9. It turns out that the screen width of the iPhone X is 61.7 mm, and the iPhone 8 Plus is 68.5 mm.

But in optimized applications, more information is placed vertically

If you calculate the area, then the iPhone X is 82.6 cm2, and the iPhone 8 Plus is 83.4 cm2. At the same time, this is only the estimated screen area, the iPhone 8 Plus has such a real area, and the iPhone X has a part of the screen covered with rounded cutouts in the corners and a strip on top.

It turns out that the iPhone X is more of a custom extension. iPhone experience 8, normal. Yes, and in the hand of a ten it feels like an ordinary eight. We already wrote that the iPhone 8 in this generation generally turned out to be a little useless - dual cameras he doesn't have, portrait mode, as a consequence, too.

If the application is not optimized for the iPhone X, then its useful area is even smaller in height than on the iPhone 8 Plus

Again, if the application does not use the entire screen area of the iPhone X, then it turns out even less.

Home screen on iPhone X can't turn sideways

By the way, the function to rotate the image by 90 degrees on the main screen (as in the iPhone 8 Plus) is absent here.

Playing Modern Combat 5 on iPhone X

Let's add that the same game developers do not really know what to do with cutouts on the iPhone X screen. For example, in the screenshot above, you can see that the pause button is slightly cut off by a rounding corner, and the black screen insert obstructs the view. At the same time, the fact that the game is running in full screen indicates that it has been optimized for the iPhone X.

Gestures

The removed Home button had to be replaced with something. We have already said that the iPhone X is not the first smartphone without buttons (it was probably the first), so some solutions have already been tested, but in the case of the iPhone, it was necessary to offer an adequate replacement for all standard and familiar gestures, which is a little more complicated.

In general, the adaptation turned out to be successful, with the exception of a few points.

The first is to call the multitasking manager and close applications. Previously, we pressed the Home button twice, but now we need to swipe up and hold our finger approximately in the middle of the screen. Moreover, if earlier we closed applications simply by swiping them up, now after opening the multitasking manager, you need to press your finger on the application list again and hold it until red icons appear in the upper-left corners of the application preview. It is somewhat like removing applications from the desktop.

Control Panel on iPhone X

The second is to call the control panel. Previously, we called it with a swipe from the bottom up, but now this gesture returns from the application to main screen(that is, it replaces the Home button). To call the control panel, now you need to swipe down from the top edge of the screen, moreover, it is with right side, since performing this gesture to the left will reveal the Today screen and the list of notifications (if any) - just like in Android. By the way, the battery charge as a percentage can now be viewed only in the control panel.

The third is the Reachability function, when the image on the display slides down to facilitate access to the upper elements. On other iPhones, we touched (taped) twice Home button(without pressing!), Now you need to slide your finger from the bottom edge of the screen, just above the edge, down. This, in our opinion, is the most uncomfortable gesture for many reasons.

First, it’s difficult to find the boundary at which the gesture is triggered. If you see a horizontal bar at the bottom that appears in applications, then the landmark is this bar. You kind of need to pull it down from the edge of the display. However, there is no bar on the main screen and you have to aim at the center of the dock with four application shortcuts.

Reachability on iPhone X

Secondly, it is not very convenient that the thumb (if you work with the smartphone with one hand) needs to be strongly bent down. The irony is that this action is required precisely if you want to reach with the same finger as high as possible. Of course, the descent of the image down is again correctly calculated so that you can easily reach any icons, but the very principle - pull your finger down to then reach the very top - causes some kind of internal contradiction in us. This is definitely not the Apple way.

Face id

If the screen disappointed us the most on the iPhone X, then Face ID, by contrast, impressed us the most. It is useless to compare Face ID with attempts to unlock in the face before - it's not only different technologies, but also a fundamentally different result. All these ideas from Samsung, ZTE and other companies worked poorly, only in good lighting, and required you to take off your glasses, take off your hat, shave - well, and so on, which ultimately made the function completely unusable for real use.

Face ID is fast, always and under any conditions. Even in total darkness. Even if you put on a hat and glasses, do not shave for two weeks, she will still recognize the user, moreover, almost instantly.

At first, however, we had problems with Apple Pay- we just didn't quite understand how it works. In fact, it turned out like this - first you need to unlock the smartphone (Face ID), then press the power button twice to activate Apple Pay, after which, before bringing the smartphone to the terminal, you need to look at it again and make sure that the smartphone recognizes us. And now you can apply to the terminal. In fact, this takes a maximum of a second or two.

Not all terminals are located at such a level that the phone could be unlocked and applied at the same time, as in the case of Touch ID. Nevertheless, Face ID is more convenient in any case - it always works, does not require any special actions(take off gloves, wipe the button, wipe your finger, etc.). In short, when we figured out the sequence of actions, the problems stopped. Although, Apple Watch is still the most convenient way payment.

Left - the smartphone is locked, on the right - Face ID recognized the owner

But we liked Face ID the most in a different scenario. When your phone is locked, it receives various notifications, the text of which is not displayed (if you activate the screen). But if you take an iPhone X and look at it, their text instantly unfolds. You don't even need to unlock your smartphone, remove it - and they will disappear again.

It's incredibly comfortable and natural. After all, in order to read the message, you just need to look at the smartphone, all other actions, in fact, are superfluous.

Performance

Now we can finally compare the performance of all the latest iPhones in one table.

iPhone X iPhone 8 iPhone 8 Plus
Geekbench 4 4224/10290 4184/9933 4259/10418
AnTuTu Benchmark 225 847 208 610 214 644
3D Mark Sling Shot Extreme 2597 2530 2841
3D Mark Ice Storm Unlimited 62189 61 532 63 109

It so happened that I was faced with a very difficult choice: whether to write a review on the test device, which Apple scattered across different editions and partners, or wait for the release of commercial devices that differ from those that the company handed out. Also, the disadvantage was that within the framework of the program “ Apple Friends»The editors received devices with the obligatory condition that the eyes would be closed for all controversial moments, and all the disadvantages would be attributed to the fact that it was test devices... With this approach, it is impossible to expect any constructive criticism, so the "reviews" turned out to be unanimous praise best iPhone in ten years. Which is quite in the spirit of Apple, since each subsequent iPhone in the company is called the best and unparalleled. Someone tried to prove themselves by finding small minuses and talking about them, portraying objectivity, someone did not even bother themselves with these trifles. The modern media market is more like a brothel, but that's a completely different story.

The price of the issue

The cost of the iPhone X in Russia is 79,990 rubles for the 64 GB version, 91,990 rubles for the 256 GB version. This is the maximum iPhone cost X in the world, in the USA the price for this device is minimal, it is 999 and 1 149 dollars (plus each state has its own tax, which should be added, for example, in New York it will be almost 9%). But in any case, in Russia you will pay 300+ dollars more for this device, since Russian market has established itself as a market where people are willing to pay for such things.

Contents of delivery

Unfortunately, high price does not mean that you will get something unusual in the device: the usual EarPods, a standard 5W charger, a Lightning cable and a paper clip.

Display

For many years in a row, Apple fans have argued that AMOLED screens from Samsung are something outrageously bad, they have the wrong colors (they usually did not know about color rendition and what it is), too high brightness(it was a shame when the advantage was written down in the minuses), and they also have Pentile. Since mid-2016, I knew that Apple was planning to buy Samsung AMOLED screens, and I was wondering how the tone of the statements would change. It has changed to the diametrically opposite: now the iPhone X screen is the standard and the future, which happened unexpectedly.

My first greetings are sent to members of the Pentile witness sect, who with the naked eye see the very subpixels (when a point on the screen consists of individual points and they can see them without a microscope, which is impossible even theoretically, but they know how to do it). The iPhone X uses the Diamond Pixel screen structure, it is fully consistent with that used in screens from Samsung, for example, in the same Note 8.

At a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels, it is not just impossible to see some subpixels, this is from the realm of fantasy. Unfortunately, Apple could not buy from Samsung screens last generations, since their cost was prohibitively high, Samsung left such matrices for their devices. As a result, Apple was content with generation 5, that is, this is the level of the Galaxy S6 matrix (for comparison, the Note 8 has a generation 8 screen, and in the S9 it will be the 9th generation in six months). For an ordinary person all these generations look like a kind of gibberish that says nothing. But let's try to figure out the details and what Apple saved on for the iPhone X screen, since they did not want to overpay for the latest developments.

So, the first ideological solution is to limit the screen brightness, by default it is set to 625 nits (manual adjustment), that is, it is exactly the same level as that of the iPhone 7/8 and other models. This is a comfortable level for indoor use, but in the bright sun it is not so good (sorry, but it rains in Moscow, and it is still difficult to show this in photographs). For comparison, in automatic iPhone mode X produces 725 nits, under the same conditions and also under automatic adjustment Samsung Galaxy The S8 is + 1,000 nits, and the Note 8 is 1,200 nits. That is, the current flagship from Samsung produces brightness almost twice as high, which makes the picture in bright light much more realistic, you do not see fading and, for example, taking pictures, you can achieve realistic results, for example, when correcting the exposure, and not doing it at random ...

The contrast of the screen is 1,000,000: 1, for comparison, in the iPhone 8/8 Plus it is 1300: 1 and 1400: 1, the screens differ in perception like heaven and earth, the display in the iPhone X is much better than in other iPhones. But comparison with Galaxy Note 8 he will lose, these are the matrices different generations, the display from the iPhone should rather be compared to the Galaxy S6. But for the iPhone audience, in any case, this is a strong step forward, since they have not seen anything comparable, they simply have no experience using high-quality AMOLED screens.

Just like in the "eights", the iPhone X has technology True tone, it uses an RGB sensor on the front panel to assess the lighting conditions and shift the white balance point for more natural colors. In my opinion, this is a good technology that makes the picture more natural, no matter where you look at it, in bed under the covers, in the office or on the street. The sensor is trying to bring the picture to some common denominator. Samsung screens of the 8th and 9th generation use more advanced RGB sensors, with a more accurate assessment of illumination, plus two of them - on the front and back surfaces. The high brightness allows you to adjust the white balance over a wide range, which makes the picture the same in almost all conditions. This is not the case with the iPhone X, lacking in-display capabilities. But again, for people who have not tasted the best, this will be an undoubted step forward.

Now we need to talk about the cutout on the screen. Apple says the screen is 5.8 inches, but in practice this is not the case due to the notch at the top for the speaker and other sensors. In most programs, this space on the sides of the speaker is not used in any way, and it cannot be used. Even Apple did not come up with anything better than simply outputting the network signal, the Wi-Fi designation, and the battery there.

It's a pity, but there is simply no room for the battery percentage, for some reason Apple thought it was unimportant. I really hope that the company will come to its senses and return the percentage of the charge so that we can see this parameter.

Now a little entertaining mathematics... Remember when phone makers started to install massive cameras, but indicated the thickness of the case without taking into account this blotch, so that the dimensions did not seem excessive? In the iPhone X, we have the opposite situation, when the manufacturer is trying to make it clear that the screen is larger than it actually is. The reason is banal, it needed parity with the Galaxy S8, which has a 5.8-inch screen. And this parity was achieved due to an interesting trick: the diagonal of the screen is measured taking into account the notch. But if you remove the notch and parts of the screen above it (as it will be in most programs), then it turns out that the screen is 5.5 inches, and not 5.8 inches, as we are told. Also note that the screen rounded edges, both above and below.

The claimed aspect ratio is 19.5: 9, but we remove the notch and get 18.5: 9, that is, completely the same ratio as in the Samsung flagships. Why is this so? The answer lies in the fact that for applications such as video, for example, YouTube, this aspect ratio is more or less acceptable. Compared to the iPhone 8, you will get about 10% more picture on the iPhone X screen when watching a video, but in programs (lists) this will already be a big gain.

It remains incomprehensible to me how at Apple, where once upon a time Jobs paid attention to little things, they could shoot with a camera in such a way that the final result does not stretch to the entire screen. It's just one feature that makes the user enjoyable, as he sees the picture in full screen. In the same Samsung, you can simply choose the geometry of the image that is close to you. Here? And here in the iPhone X you have huge black bars on the sides. And after that, you want to say that at Apple, someone thinks about the little things?

Do you want to be surprised again? For example, you know for sure that 5.8 inches is more than 5.5 inches, right? In fact, the screen in the iPhone 8 Plus is about 5% larger. Not god knows what the difference, but it is noticeable - the Plus is wider and smaller, while the iPhone X is taller. This is how entertaining mathematics turns out.

The cutout in the iPhone X screen is an attempt, in the absence of technology and even a semblance of control over the supplier (Samsung in this case, well done, they just got their way and received super profit from Apple for old developments) to do something unique. I'm sure Samsung was twisting a finger to the temple when Apple decided to stand out that way. No curved screens, because they are much more difficult to manufacture, no real advantages, but only a cutout. It is also called eyebrows or beard.

This is an objectively stupid decision, as most developers will have to adapt their programs to the rounded screens of the iPhone X, as well as the notch that this device has. Sooner or later they will do it, but this is just a waste of work, since this cut does not make any sense. It's a numbers game to get it for less money large diagonal and show that we have big screen, not less than direct competitor.

Just for comparison, Samsung's flagships have 3K screens with a resolution of 2960x1440 pixels, while the iPhone X has a 2K screen with a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels. It is clear that you can close your eyes to this and consider the difference insignificant. As well as counting all the other parameters of the screens are not as important as they could be.

It is with great pleasure that I read how they praise the screen in the iPhone X, as this confirms the words I wrote a couple of years ago that the screens in the Galaxy S6 (all models of that brood) are excellent and ahead of their time. The fact that they put them in the iPhone X old version, this is good. As well as the fact that they added HDR support for video (only for certain services for the USA, in Russia it is useless).

And Apple regretted the extra $ 5 for adding AlwaysOn Display to its flagship, leaving room for "improvements" in the future, so to speak. As well as there are no additional modes energy saving (transferring the screen to black and white), which is also very expensive for Apple.

The short conclusion is better screen among all iPhones, but it does not stand up to comparison with the real technological flagships of the market, it lags behind by several years. The cost of repairing the screen, if you break it, is $ 279 in the United States (in Russia a little less than 30 thousand rubles), additional AppleCare + insurance will cost you $ 199, then the screen will be replaced for $ 29 one time. It is not necessary to beat this device, it is too expensive.

Battery

Built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 2716 mAh. Apple claims that the device lasts an average of 2 hours more than the iPhone 7, and I am sure that this is true, since the iPhone 7 without the prefix plus has a noticeably smaller battery, but also smaller screen... The advantage of the AMOLED screen in this device is negated by the fact that Apple could not integrate it correctly (there is no additional chip to control the screen modes, even despite the savings on brightness). While I was studying this device, the feeling all the time did not leave me that Apple was saving on trifles to fit into the development budget and the BOM list.

My experience is that the iPhone 8 Plus lasts longer than the iPhone X, it feels (difficult to measure), it is about 9-10 hours difference. That is, if Plus lasts for about two days, then the iPhone X with the same usage profile ends by the morning of the second day.

Fast charging is supported, but to use it (50% in 30 minutes), you need to purchase Charger from the MacBook, take the minimum power at 21W, since there is no difference, and also the cable for this device. In total, pay a little less than 6,000 rubles (5,580 rubles, to be exact) and get the opportunity to charge your device quickly.

In that iPhone generation wireless charging first appeared, unfortunately, fast wireless charging was left for subsequent models, so you are limited rather slow charging, but it's good that it is at least present (the difference in charging time from Note 8 is almost 2 times, although the second battery is larger in capacity).

The miracle did not happen, although I expected it from the iPhone X, because the AMOLED screen was supposed to give an increase in the operating time, but this did not happen. Therefore, it turned out to be a half-and-half, not Plus in terms of operating time, but also not an ordinary "eight", exactly in the middle.

While writing this text, many times I unlocked the screen using FaceID and realized that this function wastes the battery only in this way, in my case from 9 am to 3 pm it took 87% of the charge. At the same time, there is no data transfer, the backlight is on the half. But I'm sure that in ordinary life all this will not be so critical.

FaceID and no fingerprint sensor

Apple decided to abandon the fingerprint sensor, since they could not place it under the screen, but put it on the back panel, as they do Chinese companies and recent times Samsung didn't. Ditching the fingerprint sensor is a radical step, because it was Apple who taught its users that the fingerprint sensor is important. And as usual and as usual for Apple, the company has gone to great lengths to advertise face recognition, which is safer than fingerprint, and therefore must be used.

You pick up the device and it starts working infrared sensor backlit (flood illuminator, its only task is to understand if there is a face in front of the phone (the angle of view is 78 degrees, that is, it will not work to "look" into it from the side). includes a projector, this is a laser that projects up to 30,000 points on the face. The third stage is the actual recognition, when the infrared camera already reads some of these points (not all of them are constantly visible, it depends on the angle of inclination and other parameters, therefore, a certain redundancy has been created) and transmits data to the processor that conducts face recognition.

Technology works in different conditions, even in the dark, even at dusk, you can be wearing a hat or hat, this does not play a big role, since part of the face is still preserved. But if, unexpectedly for the phone, many new changes appear, for example, a beard, glasses and a hat, then there is a possibility that it will not recognize you (come out of cryogenic sleep and let's torment the phone, in real life there will be no changes in your appearance). In description Apple technology claims that in the case of the twins, there is a possibility that the device will unlock, which has already been proven in practice, this is happening. This was not the case with the fingerprint sensor.

Apple also said that errors in face recognition can be for children under 14 years old, what problem may exist in this case is not very clear, since the technology is described in such a way that the device constantly checks new "photographs" of the face, creates only local copies that disappear after a couple of weeks. There is no training through months of use, this greatly distinguishes this technology from face recognition, which is used in flagships from Samsung, where “photos” are stored locally, taken in different conditions - in the morning without makeup (for girls it is relevant), after drinking with a swollen face and so on, that is, all kinds of conditions, and their storage for long term allows you to achieve almost instant unlocking.

In practice, you quickly set up face recognition and it works as advertised. Not instantly, there is no quick unlock magic. But the most offensive thing is that, for example, at Samsung, I instantly go to the screen where I left off, for example, I go to Instagram. In the iPhone X, an unlock icon appears on the display, and then I need to swipe the screen to get to the menu. This is inconvenient and illogical, but this logic was laid down by the developers, who once again wanted to emphasize the uniqueness at any cost.

All programs that worked with TouchID out of the box support FaceID, that is, they do not need to be rewritten, Apple said. Most of the software started up and worked well, one of the programs for some reason did not work, but I hope that it will be updated soon.

Disadvantages of the only biometric method unlock iPhone X is multiple. To begin with, the phone holder is never placed at the steering wheel in a car, it is unsafe and corny inconvenient. For iPhone X, the phone holder will have to be strongly shifted to the left towards the steering wheel, and also tilted towards the face, otherwise recognition will not occur. Forget the convenience of old iPhones, when you touched the sensor and the device started working, everything is not so simple and easy here, definitely a step backward, as the implementation is worse.

Another point is the speed of work. Sometimes recognition is a little dull, sometimes it does not recognize a face, it happens infrequently, but it still happens. Stories about the fact that everything always works perfectly is akin to the fact that the iPhone never has any software problems (after the advent of iOS, fewer and fewer people believe in these tales).

But the main disadvantage that there is in face recognition is not obvious, and many simply ignored it, this technology is energy-consuming and loses to the fingerprint sensor on the iPhone not even at times. The explanation is simple, the sensors need to create an IR illumination, then project a picture with a laser, read it with a camera and process it with a processor. One face unlock is approximately equal to 24 clicks on the fingerprint sensor ( iPhone comparison 8 Plus and iPhone X). If we take it for granted that a US study that people unlock their smartphones an average of 80 times a day, then the iPhone X's utilitarian unlocking function consumes quite a bit of power compared to previous iPhones. For comparison, on Samsung Note 8, face unlocking eats up about 10% of the battery charge in two days, it is also energy-consuming due to IR illumination, but there is no TrueDepth sensor and laser illumination.

And just a few words about FaceID being unique and unparalleled on the market. This, of course, is not so, good for everyone Samsung flagships have face unlocking, and it is quite safe and fast, despite assurances to the contrary and the fact that you can allegedly unlock the device with a piece of paper. Works in the dark and in any conditions, which is no different from FaceID in terms of user experience. There are many face recognition technologies on the market, the question is whether it is reasonable to apply one technology or another in a particular case, Apple decided to use sophisticated technology so as not to repeat what others have done (plus the inability to circumvent patents). This is not a deliberate, but a forced step, which they are trying to present as a kind of technological advantage. It has already resulted in Apple not being able to produce a sufficient number of recognition modules, and because of this, the production volume of the iPhone X is minimal. As well as the company had to coarse the characteristics of such modules so that they were at least in some quantity, Bloomberg wrote about this.

Apple denied the Bloomberg publication (the company never commented on rumors, and then suddenly did it), but they said floridly that the recognition accuracy did not change in any way. That is, they did not deny that they reduced the requirements for the hardware of the sensors. Whether Apple will return to the original sensors is unknown. One thing I can say for sure: the devices that I received for tests in Russia (including the one I played with these weeks) have a different hardware than those that will be on sale. Prototypes are built on the original sensor with maximum performance. Therefore, I will scrutinize FaceID in a commercial device, since I will have it in a few days.

Gesture controls and other UI changes

This is the first iPhone in many years to change the way the interface works, it is now gesture-driven, and it will take a little time to get used to the lack of a Home key. Learning curve in iPhone case X is very short, you can't say that everything is intuitive. If you don’t show how to work with the interface, then you probably won’t guess about the gestures. I'll start with a simple one, it is impossible to turn off the phone by holding the unlock / power key, now you need to press the volume up, volume down and power buttons. You can explain as long as you like why this is so, that this is a forced decision, but I would prefer an additional key for Siri on the body and regular button on / off. It is clear that Apple fans have their own logic, but good design of things assumes that the thing performs the usual actions. What is the usual action for the on / off button? Shhhh, do not tell people who think that new actions are logical, which most people expect from such a button to turn the device on and off. Don't upset people.

Apple has always been able to do beautiful animation, did the same here. Now open applications- these are cards, you can move between them, close them with a long press (why not swipe them? I don’t know), swipe in the other direction is an exit to the menu. To open the list of applications that you have used, you need to swipe from the bottom of the screen and hold it in the middle. It is impossible to guess about such a possibility, you need to know about it. There is another way to switch between neighboring applications, this is a swipe from left to right or, conversely, in the lower bar (it is not shown in any way, that is, there are no prompts here either). I had a strong impression that they made the interface in such a way that it did not look like Android, and therefore there are no bars and hints that the phone can be controlled like this. At one time, Nokia N9 had a similar interface, ideologically they are very similar.

Of particular delight or rejection updated interface without the Home key, I don’t. It's just done differently, no better, no worse. Otherwise. For those who are accustomed to old devices, this will probably not be so convenient. For the rest it is quite acceptable.

A nice little thing - notifications on the lock screen, they can be shown when you just look at the phone. But there is a hitch here, you need your device to recognize you (if the option to hide notifications is enabled). The thing is excellent in theory, in practice it is very energy consuming, especially if you have a lot of notifications.

The menus, work in specific programs created by Apple have not changed in any way, everything is exactly the same. Unfortunately, the rejection of vibration when working with standard programs(the same Taptic Engine) is incomprehensible to me. It is possible that the matter is in the version of the device, but if this shaking is removed, it will be very sad. I will check this moment on a commercial phone.

Except for the moments described, this is an ordinary iPhone, in which the interface is not entirely familiar.

Camera

I will not say anything about the front 7-megapixel camera for now, it does not take a special quality of photos, it does not stand out in anything significant, they taught the camera to blur the background, which is not bad. But she does not create any insanely beautiful portraits.

The dual camera technologically differs from the iPhone 8 Plus in that both lenses have optical stabilization (Plus was spared the money for this), plus there are hardware improvements. In my opinion, there are no special changes compared to the 8 Plus, perhaps they will appear later, when I click more shots in different conditions. For comparison, I will give pictures on the iPhone X and Note 8, in the second, the camera has a different focal length (the same x2 zoom, but the picture magnification is greater, as well as better macro, as well as a number of other modes). But these are just pictures for comparison, I really want to compare commercial devices and, perhaps, if the weather is good, I will do it tomorrow.

And which camera did you like best? What pictures?

Lack of competitors - we work according to the manual

The resources that received the iPhone X before the start of sales were also instructed not to compare it with competitors, not to mention other companies and models, as you can see for yourself by looking at various materials that were misunderstood as reviews. I will try to correct this shortcoming and compare this model with a direct competitor that has been on the market for a long time and knows how to do all the same. To make the comparison as complete as possible, let's add the Note 8 as the most expensive device after the iPhone X, as well as the Galaxy S8 as a direct competitor in positioning and capabilities. For simplicity, I have summarized the main characteristics in a table.

Unfortunately, from this table it follows with all clarity and simplicity that there is not a single technology in the iPhone X that did not exist before its introduction (as a function, not a specific implementation, which may differ). Someone is interested in some specific characteristics, but it can be argued that in general, if you take the set of what you get in each device, the iPhone X is the shortest, there is simply not much in it, or the implementation lags behind the current generation of flagships. I do not want to dwell on the design, but I will say that I consider the iPhone X a device that they tried to make as unlike Samsung as possible, contrary to logic and common sense. And they coped with this task with a bang, it is unlike, although here they sacrificed ergonomics and convenience.

Short conclusions

I repeat once again, this is not a review, and it cannot be a review, since I have left all the pain of iOS 11 and how it works outside the brackets (in the iOS 11.1 device, in which the little things have been slightly corrected, but the calculator is still a curve , and there are plenty of other errors, this is a very crude iOS, which has enough glitches). One week after iPhone release X, there will be an urgent update that will fix bugs that Apple programmers have looked at. The attitude to the product in the company in Last year frankly not giving a damn, and fans only encourage him that they tolerate such mistakes and consider them normal. In a smartphone for such a price, there should not be such ridiculous mistakes by definition, but this is my perception of beauty, I admit that you have it completely different.

At the same time, the image component of the iPhone X is at its maximum, these days different people approached me and asked if it was the same iPhone, and asked how it was to me. When he replied that he was not very good, they shook their heads and twisted him in their hands, saying that he was still very, very cool. As a rule, the younger my interlocutor was, the more he liked the iPhone X. older man, the more calmly he treated the smartphone and talked about it without aspiration. The feeling was that the bulk of those who liked the iPhone X are young people, plus those who simply choose the most expensive iPhone and does not fit into reasoning, what is there in it or what is absent. It's just a choice once made, and as such a choice, it is wonderful, as it provides something familiar and with minor cosmetic changes to the interface.

That boring, which reigns for the fourth year in a row with the design of the iPhone, is definitely absent here, this device differs from the iPhone 8 and previous models in the same design. And all the same, that for the sake of this they sacrificed ergonomics, convenience and common sense, for target audience the more senseless, the better, since none of the manufacturers will repeat this for sure. Here is the uniqueness for you. And, as it seems to me, everyone is happy here. Apple fans clearly see their chosenness, because few people dare to repeat this speaker cutout in flagships in such a way when it is non-functional and spoils the screen. They receive a device that will remain the key for Apple for the next year and also the most expensive one.

It's a pity, but this device is also the last desperate attempt to reverse the drop in flagship sales that happened with the iPhone 8/8 Plus - I watch with interest the weekly decline in demand for these devices, we can state the fact that they failed both in Russia and in the world ... Before the New Year in Russia there will be not so many iPhone Xs to compensate for this drop, respectively, this will not happen, and budget SEs will gain sales, as well as a decrease in prices for "six", there is simply nothing else for Apple to do. Perhaps it is the iPhone X that is a turning point in history. Apple times of Tim Cook, with him you can start the countdown of what will happen next.

P.S. Tomorrow we will share an article on how you voted and rated the top 3 manufacturers in Russia, and at the same time we will dilute this with a study of Apple's perception in the United States to add some pepper to this article. IPhone Review I will slowly prepare the X, and it will appear in a week or so. And be restrained in the comments, otherwise the moderators are not asleep! Shaking hands, especially to fans and ardent fans of Apple, the bell is already ringing for you.
