The operating system is ayos. IOS operating system: advantages and disadvantages

What is iOS in iPhone? Quite a strange question for a fan of Apple products, but still worth paying attention to. Indeed, without this thing, the iPhone will not even turn on, because it is its operating system. And why exactly iOS - can't you install something else, like, for example, on a PC?

Unfortunately, this is a closed operating system - the iPhone has the sole right to it, and other systems are not installed on it either. And is there a need for another? Yes, many consider this system to be very inconvenient and does not serve the interests of users. But, on the other hand, it is quite functional and secure. Therefore, it is better to carefully familiarize yourself with its features and make an informed choice.

iOS is an operating system created for smartphones, tablets and other equipment manufactured by Apple. Only works on devices from this American brand.

The iOS interface is maximally tailored to the needs of the user, which is facilitated by the use of multitouch technology. Although she is considered enough closed system, in which the user's freedom is severely limited. Its source code is also closed and available only to the company's specialists.

A bit of history

Laurels for the appearance touch phone(smartphone) can be safely given away to the head of Apple Steve Jobs. It is worth considering, after all, a little over 10 years have passed since 2005, and how far these technologies have advanced. Namely then Steve Jobs, which is no longer there, invented new technology for computers, the use of which did not require a keyboard and mouse. A little later, he decided to implement this in phones.

And by the way, the first Motorola model ROKR was not successful, but a little later, everyone now came to the market famous iPhone... At the time, it was called Invention of the Year. Then iOS for iPhone was called simply - OS X. Now it is by no means unknown software.

Someone might say that Android (the main competitor) is much more popular. There are two reasons for this:

  1. It's more open and easier to customize.
  2. It is allowed to be installed on any device, and Apple does not share its developments with anyone.

Chronology of the latest versions

All versions will not be considered here - the last five are enough:

1 iOS 6 - Introduced in 2012. Has undergone over 200 changes. There are two new standard applications: map service and Passbook, which allows you to store bank cards. 2 iOS 7 - Released in 2013. This is the first time the interface has undergone such a significant change since the introduction of the iPhone. The modification touched the control center, Safari browser, AirDrop apps, Siri, CarPlay, and the AppStore. 3 iOS 8 - Presented in 2014. From interesting applications worth noting: HealthKit, Quicktype, Family Sharing. The reforms also affected the work with photos, messages and widgets and other functions. 4 iOS 9 - Introduced in 2015. Improved maps, Apple Pay, Siri, etc. Also, it became possible to complicate the password for entering, the power saving function was improved, multi-window and search by settings were introduced. 5 iOS 10 - Available since 2016. The Messages and Siri apps have been heavily redesigned, and Maps, Photos, Music and News have been redesigned.

IOS Benefits

The system works fast enough and does not slow down, although there are exceptions. In particular, when the latest version is installed on an outdated device. In this case, the system boot may occur more slowly or not at all - although, ideally, everything is in order on new models. If you bring more specific example: on the iPhone 5s, you should not install the latest iOS 10 - after that it will obviously start to slow down.

The interface itself is pretty nice and easy to use. Although the design is not liked by everyone and is considered by some to be too colorful and primitive.

There are many applications created specifically for her - the AppStore, literally bursting with them, although really good things cost money. But there are enough inexpensive and free ones too.

This system for iPhone is often updated, although the update does not always have a positive effect on the operation of the device. Probably, developers are encouraging to buy new models.

Developers place particular emphasis on the security of the system, but this often creates certain inconveniences. Most likely, it is the most protected from pirated content, but this is not a problem either.

Disadvantages of iOS

Not everything is smooth, and before choosing a device from Apple, it is better to carefully read all the shortcomings:

All content must be officially purchased from the AppStore. No, of course, you can hack the system, but after that the smartphone loses warranty repair... The problem is not solved by bluetooth and flash drive. A flash drive on iPhones is not provided, and bluetooth only sees comrades from a neighboring apple club. Therefore, everything will have to be downloaded separately, and then uploaded via iTunes.

It is extremely difficult to customize the interface for yourself. Correctly say that Apple supposedly knows better what the user needs. But, in principle, everything is set up quite conveniently, and there is no great need to change something.

iOS 10

What's annoying about the latest version:

  • The taken photo is immediately sent to the cloud storage and deleted from the phone. Then it will take time to look at it;
  • The iMessage app requires activation on a regular basis. And for this you need to send a paid SMS;
  • You can't just go and switch from 3G to LTE. There is no such leverage in iOS;
  • You cannot disable all applications in one click;
  • The dollar / ruble rate in the AppStore is higher than the real one. But Apple is somehow unaware….

Conclusion

It probably makes no sense to compare iOS with competitors, and which operating system is better. There are no leaders or losers. Otherwise, there would be only one operating system for all devices. It's just that they are all different and created for different needs.

A respectable businessman needs quality and reliability - he is not interested in the prices in the AppStore. And the student will need a lot of music and video, and most importantly, the ability to exchange it with friends. He probably won't like iOS that much. Therefore, before buying a device with this system, you need to decide what exactly you expect from its use and what it is specifically needed for.

This mobile platform is considered by many to be the greatest in the world, as is the first iOS presentation by Steve Jobs, who unveiled the iPhone on January 10, 2007. It was from this day that the history of iOS began.

A lot of time has passed since then and the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch have literally changed the whole world of mobile devices. For that iOS time became one of the most popular mobile platforms in the world.

Today it is already difficult to imagine a smartphone that does not have the capabilities of the iOS operating system - its multitasking, work with third-party applications, interactivity, etc. Therefore, we decided to devote a little time and describe the entire history of the development and improvement of iOS, from the very beginning to the present day.

During the presentation of the iPhone in 2007 year Apple called the operating room Mac system OS X, which has been redesigned for mobile needs. But, with an unaided eye, it was clear that the mobile version is a completely different product, which took only the basic features from the Mac OS.

When the iPhone was launched, the OS was called "iPhone OS" and so it continued to be called for four years, and only with the release of iOS 4 in June 2010 it was renamed to iOS. And all due to the fact that Cisco owned the IOS trademark and only by 2010 they entered into an agreement on the use of this name by Apple.

iOS 1: The iPhone Appears

It was hard to imagine the excitement that was caused by the presentation of this smartphone. He was simply out of competition among all other models.

At that time, the last Windows development Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian, BlackBerry were ahead of the iPhone in terms of functionality.

For example, the first iPhone:

  • Didn't have 3G support;
  • Didn't support multitasking;
  • There was no way to copy and paste the text;
  • It was not possible to attach files to email, there is no MMS support;
  • Was closed file system OS for developers.

But, nevertheless, all these shortcomings faded against the background of the positive aspects that other mobile devices did not have.

Instead of competing in technical nuances, Apple has focused on looks, beauty, and usability. Yet many specifications iPhones were cutting edge for 2007.
Working with the iOS interface... At the time of the introduction of iOS, most smartphones had resistive screens... It was possible to navigate through the phone menu only with a special stick - a stylus or a pinpoint pressure on the screen with a fingernail.

In 2007, Apple introduced the projected capacitive touchscreen, which made it possible to control the device with one or more fingers. This technology got the name - multitouch. Literally translated as multiple touch.

No buttons- the main direction of Apple during the creation of a smartphone with touch screen... This functionality made it possible to distinguish itself from competitors and come out on top in the segment. touchscreen smartphones.

iOS 1.0 has demonstrated excellent speed in both productivity graphic elements and stability under load. Among other things, these indicators remain with her to this day.

mobile version Safari browser... In the first version, a full-fledged web browser appeared, almost in no way inferior to a browser on a simple computer. It supported Flash and did not distort sites like browsers did on competitive devices.

Mobile Safari version had:

  • Scalability;
  • Scrolling through web forms to fill out;
  • Support for the W3 standard. The standard that developers adhere to when creating sites. Now most sites are displayed one-to-one like on a computer.

Built-in iPod. Apple already before the presentation of his mobile operating system promoted iTunes service and iPod player, as an ideal scheme for obtaining content, ala a store and a device for working with the store. Now one of the devices (iPod) has been added to one more, more functional device (iPhone). And now the expression “the whole world is in your pocket” sounds more real.

Visual keyboard... She was most likely the first in all mobile industry, which allowed you to easily and special skills to type the text.

IOS 1.0 introduced a desktop called SpringBoard... When you press a single button on the phone, the user always returns to the desktop, regardless of which OS partition he is in.

Springboard had a simple and non-eye-catching icon set. Over the next 5 versions of the OS, the desktop of the devices was almost not configured. There was no way to add widgets unlike Windows capabilities Phone or Android.

If we compare the main features of the first versions of Android and iOS, then Android would win in many respects, but when it comes to practicality and usability, iOS is superior.

Below you can watch the presentation of the iPhone 2007, in Russian. I'm not afraid of this word, but the presentation is just brilliant, I advise everyone to watch it.

iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store

IPod Compatible

Three months after the release of the first version, the iOS 1.1.1 update appeared. Some inaccuracies have been updated, in particular the functionality in the iPod Touch player. Added iTunes function Wi-Fi Music Store, with the help of which it became possible to buy media files immediately through a mobile phone. One drawback - the store worked only via Wi-Fi networks.

So fast update Apple has just confirmed that it is serious about developing this operating system, that they will continue to support it. And there is no doubt that this update made it even more popular.

The last major update before the release of the second version was made in January 2008, under the number 1.1.3.

The main changes were made to the desktop:

  • Added the ability to adjust the position;
  • You can now add shortcut links to web pages.

But still There was no SDK for iOS of the first version yet and third-party developers could not write applications under it. At that time, everyone expected that the operating system would become open and programmers would finally be able to start writing software for it.

The second release of the mobile operating system took place in July 2008. Together with the iPhone 3G, which was already communicating over third-generation networks.

App Store... The main event is the launch of the App Store and the ability to upload third-party smartphone applications to it. Such app stores were no longer uncommon, but this was exactly the move Apple fans were waiting for, because the potential for iOS was huge and everyone understood this.

The main competitors had such stores poorly integrated into the device itself, or they were not at all. Therefore, this update again made iOS the leader in the mobile OS market. Now, access to the content store was in a man's pocket.

From a business point of view, it is ideal scheme that facilitates the process of selling music, applications.

Now it has become possible to download and buy a song or game through the phone, paying for it from your card.

iOS SDK. From the second version of the operating system, an SDK (Software Development Kit) Is a set of tools for developing applications.

Now any developer of programs or games can write their applications for the iPhone and iPod. This is the most anticipated innovation in iOS 2, which has been waiting since the presentation of the first version in 2007.

The operating system itself remains closed, applications can only be installed from the App Store, many iPhone functions cannot be tied to a computer.

IOS 2 updates

The second version, despite the positive aspects, was one of the most unfortunate, users noticed many shortcomings. One of the biggest failures is the reduction in battery life. Because of this, updates to the second version happened very often, the first one happened two months after the release.

Update 2.1 resolved the battery issue, in this and subsequent Apple updates managed to fix the main shortcomings and add new features associated with the fact that iOS 2 was already on the iPhone 3G, that is, it supported third-generation communications. And therefore, the basic architecture has been revised with a focus on 3G communications.

iOS 3.0

iOS 3.0 was presented along with the iPhone 3GS in June 2009. There were no special changes in the operating system, as, in principle, in the device on which it was installed.

Work with text

Stereo bluetooth headset

Work with text. In the third iOS version it became possible to cut, copy and paste text. This problem was noticeable even in the first version, when the phone was sharpened for working on the Internet and sending letters, while the ability to copy and paste text was very much lacking. This feature was so well implemented that the iPhone 3GS once again left the competition behind in terms of “text-handling convenience”.

Spotlight is a convenient search. Search for files, applications, documents within the system. The main idea is to create quick search, for this, another desktop was added, on which there was a form for entering text. Now iOS has caught up with the main competitors (BlackBerry, PalmOS, webOS and Windows Mobile) on this issue, which have already implemented this.

Support for MMS was added, which in mid-2009 was no longer relevant, because this add-on was losing popularity due to the fact that it became more accessible.

Also in iOS from June 2009:

  • Video recording;
  • Landscape keyboard;
  • Voice reminders;
  • Remote erasure of data;
  • Compass;
  • Autocomplete web forms in the browser;
  • New APIs for SDK;
  • Stereo Bluetooth, for connecting headsets.

iOS 3.0 was much more successful than the second version, because the developers took into account many wishes ordinary users and tried to remove all the shortcomings as much as possible.

IOS 3 updates

A few months later, Apple released iOS 3.1, which featured more more possibilities, including: remote blocking devices, convenient download of melodies, voice control via wireless bluetooth.

iOS 3.1.3 was released in February 2010 and it was the last update that could be delivered to the iPhone 2G and the very first iPod Touch player. From now on, it will not be possible to update the software on older smartphone models.

iOS 3.2: Now for tablets

Version 3.2 was specially redesigned for and the world saw it on the iPad on April 3, 2010. The main features concerned the elaboration of the display on the large display of the tablet, a special type of drop-down menus, and the like.

New interface design. A sleek appearance has appeared, bookmarks in the Safari browser have become more convenient. Photos can now be split into albums. A calendar, a notebook, a list of contacts have been worked out.

New interface

It’s immediately obvious that Apple is paying a lot of attention to business applications and programs, trying to capture this niche as well.

The presentation of this tablet caused a lot of excitement. The Wall Street Journal wrote an interesting article about the hype this tablet caused:

"The last time there was so much noise around a flat tablet was when the commandments were written on it."

The very presentation of the first iPad, you can see below. Steve Jobs said it perfectly:

Another update appeared in June 2010.

The main changes concerned multitasking, Wifi modem, a spell checker appeared, improved Spotlight search and made a single mailbox.

FaceTime. The fourth version of the OS appeared in the iPhone 4, so the changes were made to the front camera. Now, in addition to video communication, the user can create video conferences. The problem is that the conference can only be among Apple devices (iPad, MacBook). Communication between subscribers can take place via appleid, [email protected] or phone number. FaceTime is analogous to Skype and others.

After almost three years have passed since the release of the first version, the ability to create folders on the desktop was finally added, now the shortcuts can be combined into folders and thanks to which it turned out to make a very compact menu. This feature was the first among touchscreen smartphones. Android added this feature only in Android version 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

IOS 4 updates

After the release of the fourth version, many users noticed that the iPhone 4 does not correctly display information showing the strength of the mobile signal.

Users began checking early versions of the iPhone and it turned out that they also did not correctly display the signal strength.

The fact is that the level of reception begins to decrease only in very weak level coatings and even then for a couple of divisions, although all 4 or 5 pictures should go away. It seems that there is nothing special about this inaccuracy, but a whole scandal broke out in the West and Apple had to quickly fix the problem with the signal sensor.

In July 2010, version 4.0.1 was released (and iOS 3.2.1 for iPad), and it fixed the problem with the signal indicator.

iOS 4.1 appeared in September 2010. It expanded gaming opportunities, added Game Center. Added the ability to shoot photos in HDR quality and the ability to upload video clips to YouTube.
The next 4.2.1 update brought folders and multitasking to the iPad. Apple has implemented technology to play streaming video AirPlay, she worked between everyone Apple devices with Apple TV.

Presentation of iOS 4.0 and iPhone 4 from June 7, 2010:

This version of the operating system appeared with the presentation of the iPhone 4S, in October 2011. The developers presented many new features and capabilities, but the most important ones concerned the hardware part.

Siri technology. This feature was only available for the iPhone 4S. It provided the possibility of voice control over the phone, you can ask questions, the phone will try to answer them. Only one problem - if the user didn't know English language, then he did not succeed.

Weather and other information. In this direction, iOS lagged behind Android, and in the fifth version, the developers solved this problem by adding information about the weather, location, and air temperature to the home screen.

In the settings, it was possible to specify more precisely the location and select the information that is most needed for display.

Apple decided to borrow interesting technology from BlackBerry, which allows you to exchange short messages between devices with the same operating system. If you install iOS 5 on your iPod Touch or iPad, this free service will also work.
iMessage is one of the very first analogs and.

There was no broad functionality in it then, but it performed the main task - the exchange text messages... True, with one drawback, which allowed only to communicate with users of Apple devices.

iCloud. One of the most interesting innovations in new version firmware. At this time, Apple is trying to expand the storage functionality by cloud servers... iCloud fulfills exactly this role, it replaced old version MobileMe. Documents, photos and other files can now be copied to the cloud storage for storage. Data can sync between Apple devices one owner.

The main drawback of the fifth version is the battery life, which lagged far behind.

iOS 6

The sixth version of the operating system became available to users on September 19, 2012, along with the presentation of the iPhone 5 and iPad mini. In this version, Apple introduced its maps and improved Siri technology, although it was still not relevant for Russian-speaking users.

New wallpapers have appeared on the desktop. At that time Apple users there was not a lot of choice of design and settings appearance, How on Android systems, which is why we are describing it. The developers added a new Passbook app that was not working at the time.

New opportunities:

  • General photo streams, allowing the owner of the stream to invite his friends and acquaintances to it. Such photo galleries are linked to the user's Apple ID;
  • Do Not Disturb to disable all communications on a scheduled basis;
  • Improvements to FaceTime;
  • The function of prepared responses to unwanted calls.

Version 6.1.6 is the latest for the iPhone 3GS phone model.

iOS 7

New functionality:

  • Control center... Allows you to manage running processes and gives fast access to the modes of operation of the device. Similar to Android, with using Control Center can quickly launch compass, calculator, flashlight and other important applications;
  • Update smart search in the Safari browser;
  • AirDrop for sharing files with users of iOS devices;
  • New functionality and camera interface.

Comparison of icon design and interface in 7 and 6 versions

Control Center / Control Panel

Apple in 2013 adequately responded to its main competitor Android and released a completely redesigned and most appropriate product for its time.

iOS 8

The official release of iOS 8 is September 17, 2014.

The visual part has undergone minor changes. Now you can change standard keyboard to any you like from the App Store, as well as black and white mode so that in everything iOS interface remove colors.

New opportunities:

  • Quick change of arrangement of widgets and other interface elements;
  • Detailed statistics on the use of battery power with monitoring of consumption by applications and phone modes;
  • Time-Lapse mode, which allows the camera to take several photos in one period of time, and then merge them into one video clip; This mode is available on all iPhones starting from version 5;
  • IMessage update;
  • Advanced Search. Launching the search form is done by swiping down to home screen... The search is carried out not only on the gadget and Wikipedia, but also on the Internet. Search locations are specified in the settings;
  • A gift for music lovers - Siri can now recognize the song that is playing. You have to ask in English - "What song is play?"

iOS 9

The official release of iOS 9 is September 16, 2015.

So what have Apple developers improved on?

  • A big increase in performance: the load has been reduced by almost half, so even such old devices as IPhone 4 or iPad 2 can be safely installed;
  • The small size of the ninth firmware itself: only 1.3 GB;
  • Appeared multi-window mode, which allows you to split the screen between two applications and work in them at the same time;
  • Proactive Assistant, which allows you to search for music, videos, notes and photos by voice;
  • New functions in notes: added the ability to insert pictures and draw them yourself;
  • Possibility of laying routes with transfers in the "Maps" application;
  • New app for paying with Apple Pay;
  • Keyboard update: new buttons and unique gestures;
  • + 2-3 hours to the autonomy of the device.
  • ios 9.3.4 what's new

In addition, the ios operating system, which you can download for free for your phone, is easy to install.

How to install ios operating system?

Installation of this system on mobile device will not be difficult even for experienced user... But it should be forgotten that the ios system can only be installed on a phone or tablet developed by Apple.

Stages ios installations to phone or tablet:

iOS is a mobile operating system, that is, an operating system for mobile phones and for tablet computers. It is released only for devices that are manufactured by Apple, which differs from operating Windows systems Phone and Google android that are installed on products of many companies. This - iOS feature... iOS installed on mobile phones Iphone 3-5, on tablets ipad as well as on music player Ipod.

Another feature of this operating system- deep continuity with all operating systems once developed by Apple.

Many opponents of the iOS operating system compare it to a fascist state. Everything is arranged pretty well, the user is satisfied and even happy. However, everything is decided for the user somewhere far away in the leadership. Step to the left, step to the right - they are simply impossible. The operating system code is closed and is not available to anyone except specialists.

But - we repeat - the user is happy. And those who have already purchased phones or tablets Apple usually they do not leave.

What is the reason for this loyalty? Of course, in convenience and in the undoubted advantages of the operating system.

These include the following

  1. The system is fast. The interface does not "slow down"
  2. The system boots up quickly and the phone / tablet is ready to go quickly.
  3. Colorful and intuitive interface.
  4. Convenient file system. Almost all actions can be done in 2 clicks.
  5. A huge catalog of programs located in the AppStore. The software is not free, but it is inexpensive. I must say that non-free software is the principle of Apple. You have to pay for the software. But the AppStore is the largest repository of programs for tablets and mobile phones.
  6. The operating system is well updated and for this reason it becomes more convenient and more functional over time.
  7. The iOS operating system is very well protected from intrusion and virus dangers.
  8. Stylish look of Apple devices and beautiful interface and graphics.

The iOS user interface is based on the concept of direct manipulation. The main control is the touch-sensitive screen. The main control is the user's fingers.

Hardware parameters as well as operating system parameters are determined by the company itself. The slogan “We know better than you what you need” could be turned into the company's slogan and displayed on the screen in bright neon letters.

For "surfing" the Internet, the iOS system has a built-in Safari browser. The browser, it should be said, is excellent with a very clear and beautiful display of Internet pages.

As already mentioned, all iOS programs are not free. Program prices range from $ 0.99 to several thousand dollars. A credit or debit account is linked to a user's iOS account Visa card... Purchases are paid from it software and many other products. After linking the card to the account, 1 dollar is withdrawn from the account for verification, which is returned either during the next purchase or after a while.

Device activation, software and operating system updates, as well as downloading music, audiobooks and other multimedia occurs through the iTunes program.

The current version of iOS can be viewed through the menu Settings - General - About device - Version.

As in all modern devices since version 5.0, integration with cloud interface, that is, the possibility of remote storage of files. This system is called iCloud. Through iCloud, you can transfer files from one device to another within the same user account.

Apple's iOS system has, of course, significant drawbacks.

  1. There is virtually no multitasking. Most applications run for a while when minimized and then stop.
  2. The closed nature of the operating system is still a drawback. As a result, iOS is the most secure operating system in the world.
  3. Apple phones and tablets are much more expensive than their counterparts. Hence some of the snobbery of Apple users. They certainly don't see non-Apple users as rogue, but still ...

What features do iPad and iPhone users have?

According to a long-established tradition, along with the release of new generations of iPhone smartphones, Apple is also releasing a new version of the iOS operating system. The next - 11th - iOS has become, perhaps, the largest update of the appearance of the operating system since the abandonment of skeuomorphism in iOS 7. But in addition to visual innovations, there are many interesting things in terms of functionality. Let's get to know iOS 11 and check out the major innovations!

First of all, it should be noted that the most important innovations relate specifically to tablets, not smartphones. This is also indicated by the advertising slogan: “A big step for the iPhone. A giant leap forward for the iPad. " But some of the new features are available both there and there. We will start with them.

Files app

One of the most common criticisms of iOS is the lack of a file manager. Apple stubbornly does not allow us to work with files on the device in the same way as we work with them on a computer, that is, sort by folders, transfer from one folder to another, etc. At first glance, the new application "Files" The announcement of iOS 11 is so much hype, it changes that paradigm. Outwardly it really is file manager which clearly echoes the design of the Finder in macOS.

We see that files and folders can be assigned color tags, as it is done in macOS (although they are assigned very inconveniently and unintuitively); we see that files can be shared by sending them by email or transferring them in other ways typical for iOS. They can even be moved to folders.

But please note: there is no access to files in the iPad itself - only in the cloud services! V in this case Dropbox and iCloud Drive are connected, on the Apple website we can see in Box screenshots, Microsoft OneDrive, Google drive... True, there is also On My iPad, but we could not find this item on our tablet. Perhaps it will appear in final version iOS 11, but for now the Files app is more of a single hub for managing content in cloud services.

Note that all of the above is also true for the iPhone. On both iPhone and iPad, after the update, the Files icon automatically appears among the applications.

Control point

The Control Center has changed significantly - a translucent screen opened by a gesture from the bottom of the screen. Now you can change the set of widgets and their arrangement. All this is done through Settings / Control Center.

In the case of the iPad, this is less useful, but for the iPhone, this opportunity is a real godsend. The screenshots below show that the voice recorder and notes icons have been added, but the timer has been removed.

Other useful innovations available on both the iPhone and iPad is the notification ribbon, available right from the lock screen. But only on iPhone - new automotive mode... When the smartphone is in this mode, notifications are not received, and when you try to contact the subscriber, you receive a message that the person is driving.

Interestingly, this mode can be activated both manually and automatically - if the smartphone detects that a person is in motion. However, in this case, it will turn on in a bus, for example, or in a taxi. So there is a third, optimal option: automatic activation when connected to the car's Bluetooth.

Updated App Store interface

One of the most controversial innovations is the store interface Apps App Store. Apple has radically redesigned it (for both the iPhone and iPad), and frankly, we can't say which is better. It turned out to be less informative (in terms of the amount of information per unit of screen area) and more loud.

V new App Store, the emphasis is shifted to the choice of store editors. In the foreground are large cards, each of which is dedicated to one application. It is clear that from the point of view of user convenience, this is a dubious innovation.

On the other hand, if you want to quickly understand what the recommended applications are, then perhaps this interface can be called informative.

Stickers from apps in Messages

Another interesting and potentially useful, but far from as necessary as it seems, is the appearance in Messages of convenient access to stickers from third-party applications.

Now at the bottom of the "Messages" window there is a panel with icons of applications in which stickers are available. Moreover, you can either install some sets in the App Store, and they will become available here, or use the stickers that are in the previously installed applications.

In particular, the screenshots show that Lara Croft 2, Solar Walk 2, and even applications for lovers of Artsy have stickers. This means that the range of stickers and their usability are greatly increased. But ... how often do we use Messages? In our case, communication usually takes place in Telegram, Viber, Whatsapp and even Facebook Messenger, not in Messages. As a rule, we go there to write SMS, but in the case of SMS, stickers will not work.

New iPad interface

As we already noted, the main changes were made to the tablet interface. There is now a dock at the bottom of the screen, very similar to the one we are used to in macOS. Moreover, the most frequently launched applications automatically appear on the right side of it, and on the left side you, as before, can add applications yourself.

The fundamental innovation is that the dock can now be opened from inside any application. To do this, simply swipe your finger from the bottom of the screen.

If you perform the same action while on the main screen, and not in the application, then we will see thumbnails open windows, like Makov's Spaces.

In addition, with iOS 11 for iPad, Apple is expanding its multitasking capabilities. In the mode Split View supplementary annex can be opened directly from the dock, and it will appear on the same screen along with the previously opened one.

Another interface innovation is the transition between applications by pressing the oblong side button. The window thumbnails are now arranged in a vertical row, and you can use both the screen and the wheel to navigate through them.

Other helpful changes

The "Notes" now has the option "Scanning Documents". In theory, it looks very cool: you can take a photo of the document, and the picture will automatically be enhanced so as if it were a good scan. In practice, it does not work very well yet.

First, the option itself is buried deep. You need to create a new note, find the plus sign in the lower right corner, click on it and select "Scan documents".

Secondly, the result is still not as good as is required for full use options. For example, the eternal problem of photography - light falling from above and creating unnecessary shadows - is only partially solved by this function. Below you can see that when photographing a document, the picture was straightened, and the shadow was partially removed, but still there were dark spots that make it impossible to seriously work with this document.

It would seem, why the program cannot understand that the spot below is clearly something superfluous? This cannot be on the documents! But - alas. However, this is definitely a movement in the right direction so hopefully things get better with iOS updates.

In addition to the above, it is worth describing the new possibilities of working with the stylus. Apple Pencil(understandably, this only applies to the iPad Pro).

Now you can draw in notes and letters, and the text will automatically "wrap" around the picture. In addition, you can create a handwritten note right on the lock screen (it will be saved in "Notes"). Plus, the work with the stylus in PDF documents and screenshots has been improved - you can draw at any time, and the changes will be automatically saved.

conclusions

In this review, we have not covered everything about iOS 11. The new version of the operating system contains many small changes that may be interesting in themselves, but they are unlikely to be decisive. However, there are many major innovations described in the article.

Another thing is that we do not have the feeling of some fundamentally new opportunities that have opened up after the update to iOS 11. Perhaps, the notification ribbon on the lock screen and the ability to customize the Control Center are convenient. Otherwise, everything seems to be fine, but if you use iOS 11 and then return to iOS 10, there is no discomfort.

So, for example, expanding the possibilities of working with a stylus is absolutely the right direction, but how many users constantly carry Apple Pencil with them? Yes, those who are really used to working with Apple Pencil will probably like the new features, but these are in the minority.

The appearance of "Files" is completely doubtful in the form in which it is implemented now. It is not a full-fledged file manager. Strictly speaking, this is an aggregator of cloud services, nothing more. Previously, almost all of the same could be done simply with individual applications Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.

Another thing is that the direction of thought is absolutely correct. Yes, work with files needs to be improved. Yes, the document scanning function can really be very useful if it reaches the required level.

What's definitely good and convenient is the customized Control Center on the iPhone and the updated Dock on the iPad. However, you may have a different opinion and impression. Tell us in the comments what new iOS 11 you like the most!
