Windows 10 start menu design. What to do if the start menu does not open

Hello dear readers. Today, as I promised, the article will be devoted to setting up the start menu for Windows 10.

But for beginners, I still want to repeat myself in the personalization settings, you can get as follows:

Move the mouse pointer over an unoccupied area of the desktop and right-click. Select "Personalization" from the list that appears.

The following settings will open

At your discretion, select the folders you need. Personally, as you can see, everything is turned off for me.

Application list

This part is similar to the Windows 7 menu and includes a list of recently added programs, and below this list are all programs installed on the computer.

You can perform some actions by hovering over the program shortcut with the mouse cursor and clicking the right button, we call up a small menu, using the commands in it you can do the following:

1 Pin a shortcut to the home screen. We will talk about this a little later in this article.

2 Advanced - gives access to the following actions:

  • Pin to taskbar
  • Run the program as administrator
  • Go to the folder where the program files are located

3 Remove all program data from the computer, so be careful before clicking.

This list also includes programs and utilities built into the operating system. Here are the folder names where the most basic ones are located.

  1. Windows Utilities
  2. Accessibility Programs
  3. Administration Tools
  4. Standard Windows programs

Each of these folders is a separate topic for consideration, so we will not consider them in this article, since our goal is to familiarize and customize the start menu.

Attention! For beginners, I recommend not using these programs and utilities unless you have detailed instructions or you are not 100% sure what you are doing. Since intervention in some of them without special knowledge can only harm your operating system.

And if you still want to learn more about them, and do not miss the release of new articles.

Now let's look at the last element

Home Screen

It consists of live tiles left by developers from the Windows 8 start menu.

These tiles are some shortcuts to programs that you can add and remove.

To remove, you need to hover over the tile with the mouse pointer, and press its right button and select "unpin from the start screen" from the list

To attach, you need to select the shortcut of the desired program from the list of applications, on the desktop or in other folders, move the mouse over it and press the right button and select "pin to the home screen" from the list

Also, these tiles can be increased in size. To do this, repeat the steps with hovering the mouse cursor and select "resize" in the list that opens.

The tile can also be dragged by moving the mouse cursor over the tile and pressing the left button without releasing it to move it to the place where you need it within the home screen.

If suddenly you decide to move the tile to another open folder or to the desktop, then you will have a shortcut to this program in the final place.

General settings

I think I did the right thing by leaving the general settings for last, since now you know all the menu items, and it will be easier for you to configure it.

Go to personalization settings. (see above in this article)

We select "Start" and we open the settings.

I think everything is clear here. You can experiment with them and choose the ones that are right for you.

You can also increase or decrease the size of the menu itself. To do this, you need to open it, move the mouse cursor to the very edge and after the arrow appears, hold down the left mouse button and drag the borders up or down to set the desired size.

There is another mode that will delight owners of gadgets with touch input, this is "Tablet Mode" in the place of the start menu, the initial screen will appear, reminiscent of the well-known Windows 8

As planned by the developers, it should turn on and off automatically after disconnecting or connecting the keyboard.

But it can also be forced. To do this, click on the "notifications" button on the taskbar.

And in the window that opens, find the “Tablet Mode” icon at the bottom and click on it.

You can also exit this mode by pressing again.

Color setting

Everything is very simple. Go to the personalization settings (see above in the article). Select "Color", and in the settings click on the box with the color you need, for example, green.

We wait a bit and see what happens.

We can also customize additional settings to your liking.

How to make a menu like in Windows 7

We have discussed with you the settings that allow you to customize the main menu of the computer to your needs.

But many users are not satisfied with its functionality, and they are looking for a way to switch it to the usual classic look, as it was in XP or Windows 7.

There is such a way, but this requires the installation of additional programs on your PC. Here are a few of them:

  1. Classic Shell
  2. StartIsBack++
  3. Start10

Attention! Installing additional programs requires additional resources on your computer. As a result, it may start to slow down.

Personally, I install on my computer only those programs that I need to work. And to customize styles, colors, those tools that are already installed in any operating system are enough.

Conclusion

Now you know how to customize the main menu of the Windows 10 operating system. Be sure to share this information with your friends on social networks so that they too can set everything up and work comfortably.

But, and if you do not want to stop there, and you have a desire to master the computer in the shortest possible time, then I recommend the video course " genius geek". By the way, together with him you can get cool bonuses.

And I remind you that the competition "" continues until the denouement, there is very little left. Write comments and take part in it.

That's all. All for now.

P/S Sorry, I almost forgot to ask! How do you like the article? I advise you not to miss new information about computers.

Sincerely, Alexander Zyryanov!

Is a touchscreen required for Windows 10?
No, the operating system is fine with the mouse and keyboard. Owners of ordinary liquid crystal and cathode-ray monitors will not feel any inconvenience.

Will the Start screen be preserved in Windows 10?
In 2012, with the advent of Windows 8 and the Start screen, the user's interaction with the system has changed radically. It was a new approach to organizing the interface with Windows. Since then, Microsoft has been trying to improve the work with the operating system in every possible way. Although many of the changes seem too deep, the new interface has loyal supporters. The developers of Windows 10 have brought back the familiar Start menu, which aims to combine the advantages of both methods, to find a compromise for users of Windows 8 and Windows 7. This article will show how supporters of Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, who still prefer to use home screen, can quickly turn it on on the go and see some of the improvements.

Enable tablet mode

If you're moving to a new version from early releases, such as Windows 8.0, then get ready to face what's new. Features such as Semantic Zoom (“Contextual Zoom”), Start Tip (“Initial Tip”) are no longer available or have been moved and renamed. To turn off the Start Screen (now called Tablet Mode), simply open the Notification Center in the Notification Area on the taskbar and click Tablet mode (see screenshot above).

Home Screen

You will be taken to a Windows 8-like Start screen. Instead of scrolling horizontally, you will scroll the screen vertically and you can click on the menu in the top left corner (three horizontal bars) to access the App Library (see screenshot above). One clear difference is that the taskbar is always on screen.

Selecting an application using the task view icon

In tablet mode, applications will not be placed on the taskbar. Instead, you find running programs by clicking the Taskview task view icon next to the magnifying glass search icon (see screenshot above). You will be able to switch between applications using the Alt + Tab key combination if using the keyboard.

How are applications and programs launched?

Launch applications from the list of frequently used

To start the application, click the Start button to bring up the home screen. Launch the app you want if it's already pinned to the home screen. If it's not there, click the Hamburger menu in the upper left corner of the screen and launch from the list of frequently used applications or from the All Apps list (see screenshot above). Please note that features such as Jump List are now available that were not available in the past. Access to the entire application library is shown in the screenshot below.

Access to the entire application library

To exit tablet mode, click the Notification icon and Tablet mode.

How to enable full home screen without tablet features?

Enable full home screen without tablet features

If you want to opt out of tablet features, you can still turn on full screen from the Settings section. Click Start, Settings, or press the key combination Windows + i. Click Personalization and then Start, Under Start behaviors, enable Use full-screen Start when in the desktop as shown in the screenshot above.

Now you can combine the best qualities of both approaches.

Has touch been removed from Windows 10?
No, they are present for touch devices.

The ability to customize your desktop in Windows 10 allows you to make the operating system more personal, and it can even help you be more productive. Thus, today we are going to look at some settings that everyone should know to improve their experience with the OS.

Perhaps one of the greatest strengths of Windows is the ability to customize just about everything; users can customize the desktop with available options in the operating system and even through settings in the registry and policies. You can fine-tune after installation.

Customize the Start Menu just the way you like it

The Start menu in Windows 10 is very similar to what you used in Windows 7. However, it also integrates parts of the Start screen from Windows 8.1 and is one of the first features you'll want to customize.

Just like Windows 8.1, Windows 10 offers the ability to drag and group Live Tiles any way you like. If you want to name the group, just right-click on the top edge of the group and name it whatever you want.

With Live Tiles, you can view the latest information without having to open the app. But sometimes you may not like or need to see certain information. While you can't turn this feature off globally, you can right-click on each tile and select Turn Live Slices off.

Many users do not like the Windows 10 operating system. For some reason, users are most annoyed by the Start menu, namely tiles (Metro tiled interface). Some immediately install a special one so that the menu takes on the familiar classic look. But I like the tiles better because they look colorful and can be customized to your liking. You can customize the Start menu in Windows 10, namely the tiles, by size, by category, and by color. If you prefer the classic look of the menu, then the tiles can be removed altogether. How to do this, I will now tell and show.

Start menu inWindows 10

The menu in Windows 10 is also opened by clicking the " Start". On the left at the very top are the shortcuts familiar from previous versions of Windows, shortcuts to frequently used programs, and below are shortcuts to all applications in alphabetical order. The right side of the menu is filled with tiles. These are the same labels only slightly larger.

the alphabet will open. You can select any letter and a list of all applications that begin with that letter will immediately open.

Above the button Start» buttons are located:

  • Button " Account Settings»;
  • Button " Options»;
  • Button " Shutdown»

On the right side are tiles of a new style called METRO.

If you already have tiles like " Weather», « News”, etc., they can be deleted or disabled. Such tiles are called "live". .To do this, right-click on such a “live” tile and select the item in the drop-down menu - AdditionallyDisable live tiles.

How to remove all tiles from the start menu

If you want your menu to look more like a classic menu, then remove all the tiles. To do this, right-click on the tile and select " Unpin from home screen" or " Delete».

From the menu itself on the left, these icons will not be deleted, and they can always be created again.

After all the tiles have been removed, move the cursor to the right border of the menu, and as soon as the cursor changes to a double-headed arrow, press the left mouse button, and without releasing it, drag this side to the left edge. Then release the mouse button.

Thus, it is possible to stretch or compress the field for tiles.
