Samsung Galaxy Note9 smartphone review: almost flawless. New S Pen

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is the top device of the brand, which receives regular updates. He turns six months this month, and a month ago he received an update to Android Pie.

Recently, experts from DxOMark began testing the front cameras of mobile devices, and in the very first report they recognized Galaxy Note 9 best in this area. He scored 92 points, but it is also worth noting that he shared the first position with the Google Pixel 3.

Recently ended Galaxy program Beta Program Android testing 9.0 Pie for Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9 Plus and Note 9, and just an hour ago Seoulians released a beta version operating system for Note 8.

In spite of yesterday's messages That the international release of Android Pie for the Galaxy Note 9 has been pushed back to February 1, there are some very good news from India and South Korea this morning. Samsung has released a long-awaited update in these countries.

Last time we reported that the Galaxy Note 9 is receiving the second stable Android 9.0 Pie update, but exclusively in Germany and the UAE. In the rest of the countries, users are waiting, and if today's leak is to be believed, they will have to wait until next month.

Samsung has released an Android Pie update for the Note 9, but so far only in one country - Germany. Fresh news suggests that the company has announced the release of a second update, which looks set to become available in the rest of the world.

Germany has released the Android Pie update for the Galaxy Note 9. While we expected it to happen on January 15th, Samsung has released stable version operating system 11 days earlier.

Last week, Samsung's Turkish division released a list of devices with a deadline for updating to the latest version of the Android operating system. According to him, the Galaxy Note 9 will receive Android 9.0 Pie on January 15, 2019.

When Samsung released the official Android Pie update for the Galaxy S9 / Galaxy S9 Plus, it closed the software testing program, but not the Note 9.

Sources have unveiled the display diagonal of Samsung's next flagship phablet. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10's display will be much larger than its predecessor.

To date, security engineers have created several technologies to protect personal data that are stored on computers, tablets, smartphones and even smartwatches.

The news has just come out that Samsung already released the third version of the Android Pie tested software for the Galaxy S9, and now Note 9 users have received the second update.

This morning Samsung opened registrations for the Android Pie beta program for the Galaxy Note 9 in Germany and India. In the United States, the company launched this program a few days ago, but only now released software.

We learned this morning that the South Korean giant is already launching an Android Pie testing program for the Galaxy Note 9 in the United States. The company has already started accepting registration applications, and you should know that the number of participants is limited.

Rumors were apparently right that Samsung was going to release the Galaxy Note 9 flagship in white. The Taiwanese division of the brand has already announced new variant, but it is available so far only within this country.

The guys at GalaxyClub have discovered test software for the Galaxy Note 9 in the European and South Korean versions. From this, experts concluded that Samsung is preparing to launch an Android Pie testing program for this smartphone.

If you are not interested in the questions “how to choose a smartphone” and “which company is better”, you are not limited in price, do not want to compromise and want to become the owner of only a top mobile device on Android - we present to your attention the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which will soon appear in the "news" section.

What our review will include on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone - advantages and disadvantages, the cost of the device, its technical features, comparison with the previous model - Note 8, and Apple's flagship - iPhone X, and much more.

The information will be of interest to those who want to know how the “latest technology” looks today and, perhaps, plans to purchase the device in the future, for example, when the price drops and the device becomes more affordable.

Visually, the smartphone does not differ from its predecessor. Technically, it also does not carry any innovation. However, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is the result of optimization and integration of the most advanced technologies that have already been verified on other models.
Let's take a closer look at the smartphone. Reviews ordinary users for obvious reasons, they are not yet available on the network, but the number of reviews on the Note 9 is off the charts. And, as you know, professional reviewers can tell you much more interesting and meaningful about all aspects of the new device.

Let's take a closer look at the parameters that can be varied when ordering:

  • First, the color: indigo, black and copper. Behind the mysterious name "indigo" hides a blue body and a bright yellow S-Pen. The other two options assume a solid color scheme, and the colors are chosen quite classic for Samsung;
  • Secondly, the amount of memory. Available in 128GB and 512GB options. The difference in price between these two options is quite significant - 20,000 rubles. Therefore, before placing an order, you should think about whether you need such a volume. Moreover, the volume can be expanded by installing a microSD;
  • Third, the volume random access memory... Actually, this parameter is associated with the volume internal memory... In the 128 GB version, only 6 GB will be available, while the 512 GB version will be accompanied by a whole 8 GB of RAM. It should be noted that this is the first smartphone in the world with such a large amount of RAM.

About the cost of a smartphone

If your shopping list contains only the best manufacturers and popular models, are you used to buying flagship devices, then, most likely, you do not really care how much the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 smartphone costs.

However, we will focus on this for those for whom such purchases are not too easy.
Even taking into account the wide possibilities and excellent characteristics, it cannot be said that the latest version of the Notebooks are inexpensive. After all, the average price for this device is 69,990 rubles (377,060 tenge or 1050 dollars) with a configuration of 128 GB + 6 GB, or, as already mentioned, 20 thousand more expensive, that is, 89,990 rubles (485,000 tenge or 1,350 dollars) for a complete set of 512 GB + 8 GB.

For comparison, the previous model - a 64GB Samsung Galaxy Note 8 smartphone costs 38,700 rubles, which is almost 40% cheaper. At the same time, this model was announced and went on sale only a year ago, which means that it has not yet become obsolete. At the same time, the starting cost of the device was 56,000 rubles, from which we can conclude that even top smartphones are depreciating quite quickly.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Those who are not yet ready to purchase a flagship can be advised to look at the rating high-quality smartphones and pick up some other model. Note that the lineup this manufacturer is large enough and each user will be able to choose something for himself.

Do not forget that there are budget Chinese brands that can offer almost the same features for less money. Although this rule does not always work - so, a little earlier, chinese brand Huawei presented a 512 GB Mate RS Porsche Design smartphone for 147,000 rubles.

Let's return to Note 9. The Koreans offer an excellent credit program for it - 3,900 rubles a month will allow you, after a year, to exchange version 9 for the next one without additional payments, or for an additional 3,900 rubles - for a Samsung Galaxy S10 when it goes on sale. For those who certainly need a flagship, but the required amount is not yet available, this is an excellent solution. It is up to you to decide how appropriate it is, because you will have to pay for more than one year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs. Note 9

So, let's look at the main differences Note 9, which is about to hit store shelves, from its predecessor, the Note 8:

  • Unlocking: the fingerprint is now located more conveniently, it has moved down and now the user will touch the camera more often;
  • Camera: there is a function of recognizing and eliminating defects such as blinking, spots on the lens, blur. The photos and videos are really impressive quality. Even a photographed sunset will not lose sharpness and color saturation thanks to Scene Optimization.

You can see how the device is taking pictures below:

If you are interested in how the Note 9 takes pictures at night, then the following example of a photo will be presented below:

Note that every second survey on this model illustrates that in poor lighting conditions, the flagship is noticeably inferior to the Galaxy S9 and its predecessor, the Note 8.

Photos taken with the front camera are pretty good, but with high magnification, it turns out - which is still not ideal.

As for the rest of the parameters:

  • Screen: 0.1-inch larger, higher pixel density. The Note 9 has a brightness of 427.7 cd / m2. This is a fairly good indicator, which automatically rises to 721 cd / m2 in the sun. The white balance on the screen is great. The color scheme is more than saturated, but, if you wish, you can easily correct it and make the colors more natural;
  • Operating system: Note 8 is still only available on Android 8.0, while Note starts with 8.1 Oreo;
  • S-Pen: Now works like a Bluetooth remote. The stylus allows you to remotely control music, play movies, switch in the browser, flip through slides in presentations, and much more. Charging the pen takes only 40 seconds, and it works on the received charge for about half an hour or 200 touches;

  • The upgraded Exynos 9810 chip provides high productivity although it should be noted that the Exynos 8895 installed in the Note 8 is still very good. Still, the Note 9 is even more nimble than its predecessor;
  • RAM and ROM: Note 9 is not limited as Note 8 6 and 64 GB. It is possible to choose the more powerful 512 GB and 8 GB versions. You can install a 512 GB memory card in a smartphone and become the owner of 1 Terabyte, which will be very convenient, for example, for photographers and people who are used to storing in their device a large number of information;
  • Battery: The Note 9's battery capacity is significantly increased compared to the Note 8 (from 3300 mAh to 4000 mAh);
  • Sound: The Note 9 now supports Dolby Atmos and comes with headphones from Harman / Kardon. The sound quality is excellent both in the headphones and through the speakers.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 vs. Apple iPhone X

It is impossible not to make a comparison of the Korean flagship with its main competitor - the iPhone X, which was announced almost a year ago - in early September 2017.

The cost of the devices is approximately the same. Apple Smartphone iPhone X 256 GB today costs 73,000 rubles, 64 GB - 65,000 rubles. A significant difference is that you cannot insert an SSD card into an iPhone and thus expand the amount of memory, which is limited to 256 GB.

The battery is more powerful in Nout (4000 mAh versus 2700 mAh), but it also has a larger screen (6.4 inches versus 5.8 inches) - which means that it consumes more power. As for the resolution, the laptop is in the lead with OLED 2960 * 1440 pixels against 2436 * 1125 for the iPhone.

Both devices support fast wireless charging and are waterproof. The rear panel collects fingerprints equally well.

In terms of unlocking more interesting iPhone X - It has Face ID, while Samsung still only supports fingerprint.

The quality of the cameras is about the same, both devices have their own interesting features. For example, “live photos” from Apple, which are embodied in multi-frame shooting mode from Samsung.

It makes no sense to compare the OS, we can only note that updates for iOS come out much more often than for Android.

We can say that these two smartphones are equally good, and the choice should be made only on the basis of which nonsense and operating system you are a fan of - Apple and iOS or Samsung and Android.

Who will be interested in the flagship

Samsung's Note series is positioned as a phablet - that is, a miniature Tablet PC, which is convenient for reading, typing or creating documents.

In fact, it is difficult to single out any specific niche of consumers who would buy exactly the Note line.

Definitely, it will be of interest to photographers and bloggers - after all, it allows you to store up to 1 Terabyte of information. It will also appeal to fans of various "heavy" games - due to the top-end hardware, nothing will slow down. Office opportunities here are also at their best, respectively, a smartphone will be useful to those who often use a computer.

Where to buy Note 9 profitably

This is the case when there is no difference, because the device is available only by pre-order. And, this means that it is most profitable to purchase it on the official Samsung website. Intermediaries, by the way, offering a smartphone at the same price, are at least on the market today, even in large cities.

However, in case of pre-ordering through Samsung, you will receive a wireless multi-charger as a gift, which can be delivered along with the phone immediately after the start of sales. It should be noted that its cost for a separate purchase is 7,000 rubles.
By the way, it is already known that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is ahead of the Galaxy S9 in the number of pre-orders. However, it falls short of the level of the previous model from Galaxy line Note.

Device complete set

What's in the box that comes with the Note 9? In fact, the set is quite standard and has become familiar to Samsung. All accessories are black, which gives additional charm:

  • Adapter from USB Type-C to regular USB;
  • Adapter from USB Type-C to micro-USB;
  • Wire for connecting to a computer and charging Type-C / Type-R;
  • 2 Amp charger;
  • S-pen nib replacement tool;
  • Headphones of the AKG brand (in a plug format) and replaceable rubber bands for them, several sizes;
  • An envelope containing a clip for a SIM card slot and a memory card, as well as service documentation.

And, in fact, the box itself, also made in black.

So, we got acquainted with the new flagship smartphone from Samsung - Galaxy Note 9. The device, in terms of its technical parameters, is quite comparable to a full-fledged personal computer and, as it were, hints that the latter is no longer necessary.

This reliable and productive smartphone will become a faithful friend in business, but also suitable for active games in between work, thanks to powerful processor, good battery and huge screen... Although buying such a smartphone exclusively for games is, of course, not advisable.

Which model is better to buy is, of course, a matter of taste. And yet, if you want to become the owner of a stylish, large and powerful smartphone on Android - then you should pay attention to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which will be on sale soon.

The Galaxy Note family has a special place among other Samsung smartphones. After all, it is the models of this line that have always set the tradition of quality and technical capabilities... In each new smartphone in the series, the South Korean brand introduced new technologies, experimented with form and content, so that each new product necessarily became the best in some parameter.

The next flagship Samsung Galaxy Note 9, sales of which started in Russia in the summer of 2018, stands out somewhat against the background of its predecessors. There is no clear emphasis on a specific technology. Samsung did it easier - it combined all its most advanced developments and innovations in one model, raising the bar for technical performance to a truly unattainable height.

In our review, we'll take a look at the key specs of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and compare them to previous top-of-the-line flagships of the brand to find out why it's called the perfect smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 package contents

The top flagship and its owner must be fully equipped. Therefore, the manufacturer did not skimp on the contents of the smartphone's packaging. In addition to the gadget, in a stylish cardboard box we find:

  • stylus S-Pen;
  • instructions for the smartphone;
  • a clip for the SIM card tray;
  • cable USB-USB Type-C;
  • USB-USB adapter Type-C;
  • microUSB-USB Type-C adapter;
  • a headset with two pairs of ear pads.

The care for the user is immediately visible - he does not have to buy additional small accessories, everything is already assembled in one box.

Design and ergonomics

Samsung's flagship glass and aluminum case is available in three colors: copper, black and indigo. At the same time, each stylus color has its own stylus color: yellow for indigo, bronze for copper and black for a black case.

The appearance of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 strongly resembles the appearance of the February flagship Galaxy S9. And such a decision is quite justified - why change something that already looks excellent.

Perhaps the most noticeable design difference is the location of the main cameras and the fingerprint scanner. The photomodules were placed horizontally and surrounded by a small frame, a scanner is located just below. As a result, it became more convenient to unlock the screen blindly, since the finger instantly finds the desired module, almost without touching the camera.

The form factor of the smartphone is a rectangular candy bar with slightly rounded corners. Yes, the ergonomics have become a little worse than that of the same streamlined Samsung Galaxy S8. But the weighty Galaxy Note 9 with an impressive dimensions of 161.9 x 76.4 x 8.8 mm and a weight of 201 g is more secure in the hand, while the S8 often complained that it was too slippery.

At the ends, the buttons for volume control, power on and call the Bixby voice assistant are habitually located. It's nice that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, being a real smartphone of the 21st century, remembers the classics. Despite the concerns of users, there is still a good old 3.5-mm headphone jack, and the screen has done without a fashionable, but still a little annoying "bangs".

Top-end gadget and top-end protection. The display is protected by durable glass Gorilla Glass 5, and the smartphone itself is assembled according to the IP68 standard - the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is not afraid of dust and diving to a depth of 1 meter for at least half an hour.

Picture and sound

The flagship Samsung Galaxy Note 9 received the largest display among its predecessors. With a 6.4-inch screen diagonal, a 2960 x 1440 pixel resolution and an 18.5: 9 aspect ratio, it delivers an extremely high 516 ppi image density and excellent viewing angles. Of course, the Galaxy S9's 529 ppi record is not broken, but the difference is not at all noticeable, especially since the S9's display was two tenths of an inch smaller.

Each description of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 regarding image quality is accompanied by a unanimous verdict - you will not find a clearer, juicy and colorful picture on any modern smartphone. Branded Super technology AMOLED allows you to display perfect, accurate and contrasting colors even under directional lighting, including by automatically adjusting the brightness. Moreover, such a screen consumes significantly less power than common IPS-displays.

One more distinctive feature Galaxy Note 9 display - its versatility. With one click, you can change the screen resolution to HD +, FHD + or WQHD +, as well as change the settings to Game Mode or to watch a video.

The sound quality of the Galaxy Note 9 is also great. The smartphone is equipped with three noise-canceling microphones, and two speakers at the top and bottom provide clear stereo sound without the slightest interference.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 performance and software

The smartphone received the most powerful 8-core Samsung Exynos 9810 chipset at 2.9 GHz with 6 GB of RAM. With such characteristics, the gadget has truly endless possibilities.

The chipset allows the use of software based on machine learning... It is due to this technology that the face recognition function works. Smart sensor Complemented by infrared illumination that reads the iris of the eye, providing more reliable protection of user data. And the more often you use face unlock, the faster it works.

The Exynos 9810 includes a third generation processor with optimized cache memory. This provides 40% more processing power than the Galaxy S9. The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 does an excellent job of running heavy applications at the same time.

Newest graphics processor The ARM Mali-G72 delivers more realistic graphics than its predecessor while consuming less power. The video chip with the real-time optimization function allows the smartphone to literally adjust to any game. Therefore, the highest quality graphics are provided both in conventional 3D games and in virtual reality.

Volume internal storage you are unlikely to fill up quickly - after all, there is 128 GB of memory. However, if this is not enough and you decide to download several filmographies in HD quality, you can increase the capacity of your smartphone up to 512 GB using a memory card.

The synthetic tests of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 made for review are quite unambiguous - the smartphone fits on both blades of the main competitors in the sector of flagship Android smartphones.

Software

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is controlled by a proprietary Samsung shell Experience 9.5 at Android based 8.1 Oreo. It contains the core set system utilities for customizing and personalizing your smartphone, as well as several applications designed specifically for the S Pen, such as the PENUP coloring book.

The key feature of this firmware is the redesigned and improved Knox encryption system, which provides an increased level of protection for user data.

Features of the S-Pen

One of the main features of the smartphone, which is noted in every review of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, is the reimagined S-Pen stylus located at the bottom of the smartphone. It now supports Bluetooth connectivity which turns it into a remote remote control such as a camera shutter.

It is very convenient to draw with the stylus, turn over slides in PowerPoint presentations, scroll through photos in the gallery, and control the playback of media files. In addition, the stylus is capable of interacting with third-party application interfaces.

The S-Pen got its own built-in battery, which lasts about half an hour. The stylus is charged directly into the smartphone in just 40 seconds. By the way, the smartphone provides special function which prevents the loss of the stylus. If the S-Pen is not in the smartphone slot for a long time, a notification appears on the screen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 cameras

Both Galaxy cameras The Note 9 came from its predecessor, the S9. The main photomodule is a dual 12-megapixel camera, while the first lens has a constant aperture of f / 2.4, and the other is a wide-angle lens with an aperture variable from f / 1.5 to f / 2.4. The front camera has a resolution of 8 MP and an aperture of f / 1.7. On-site and optical stabilization and zoom functions.

However, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9's camera software is clearly more sophisticated than the S9's. This is expressed in additional shooting functions. The Note 9 photo module automatically recognizes the elements in the photo, optimizing settings to capture as much detail as possible. Moreover, the system warns you about possible problems during shooting, for example, if the lens is dirty, the image lacks focus, or someone blinked in the frame.

Pro-mode cameras launches manual settings aperture and light sensitivity and allows you to work out in detail each photo. Front-camera received a fashionable augmented reality add-on. You can shoot a funny video with an animoji overlay and send it to your friends in a private message.

In addition, the smartphone can shoot in 4K format at speeds up to 60 fps, and also records videos in Slow-Motion and Super-Slo-Mo modes.

Battery life

When the Samsung Galaxy S9 hit the market in February 2018, all industry publications praised it powerful battery at 3000 mAh. However, the novelty is actively striving for leadership in its autonomy.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9's non-removable 4000 mAh battery with QuickCharge easily outshines its siblings. When playing video in FHD + resolution, the smartphone holds a charge for almost 20 hours. Active use of the Internet, games, working with the application and listening to music "eat up" only 75% of the battery capacity in a day. So with moderate using Samsung Galaxy S9 will work quietly for at least two days.

In the diagram below, you can see the test result by running time in minutes for Samsung review Galaxy Note 9. Without further comment, it is clear how much the smartphone is ahead of its closest competitors, including the Huawei P20 Pro and Apple iPhone X:

Verdict

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is the absolute leader among smartphones major league... Even in 2018, when a seemingly sophisticated user is difficult to surprise with the technical characteristics of a smartphone, the Galaxy Note 9 is capable of it. It is difficult to find an alternative to it, and is it worth it? The gadget does an excellent job with its functions and really sets the direction of development for the next generations of mobile devices.

For a long time, the Galaxy Note family has been something of a cautious experiment for Samsung. If performance improvements or software upgrades proved to be successful, these innovations were immediately applied to the more popular Galaxy S series. For example, it was on the Galaxy Note Edge that was tested. curved display and last year the Galaxy Note 8 set new standards with the manufacturer's first dual camera setup now found in the Galaxy S9 Plus.

However, there is nothing in the Galaxy Note 9 that claims to be an experiment. With the release of the Note 9, Samsung focused on product development and small tweaks. At the same time, it turned out that not so much needs to be done to gain an advantage over competitors, because already at the beginning of the year the manufacturer had taken a strong lead from Galaxy S9 Plus.

Design and workmanship

Visually, the Note 9 practically does not differ from its predecessor. The bottom bezel has become a little thinner, the main camera on the back is located a little differently. The most important difference should be the fingerprint scanner, which is now located not next to the camera lenses, but slightly below. This will protect the lenses from accidental touches, especially since they are now clearly felt thanks to decent protective rings.

But the scanner turned out to be quite small, so unlocking with your finger was not really optimal. An optionally available combination of an iris scanner and a face recognition system is generally very reliable.

The workmanship here is at a high level: both the display and the glass rear panel surrounded by a continuous aluminum bezel, which is almost invisible on the sides, as in other Edge models (for example, Galaxy S9 and Note 8). The buttons are in their usual places: the power is on the right, and the volume rocker and the Bixby call key are on the left. The Note 9 is IP68 certified and fully water and dust resistant.

New compared to the Note 8 is stereo sound (Dolby Atmos), but only the top speaker is directed forward. The second is built into the bottom edge. This practice has become widespread among many manufacturers, although Sony has proved with the example of the Xperia XZ2 that even with extremely thin frames, two speakers can be placed on the front side.

Large memory capacity

In respect of Samsung memory takes a serious step forward: the user can choose between models with 128/6 or 512/8 GB of internal memory and RAM. (8 gigs of RAM is like an ordinary computer!) Both versions also offer a slot for memory cards of the micro-SD standard, which supports chips with a capacity of up to 512 GB. So you can theoretically store 1TB of data on your phone - an incredible amount of storage space for any photographer.

However, memory comes at a price. The 128GB Note 9 enters the market with a manufacturer's MSRP of € 999, while the 512GB version is priced at € 1249. In Russia, you can already order Note 9 with 128 GB for 69,990 rubles and with 512 GB for 89,990 rubles. In addition, the most big map memory (currently "only" 400 GB) will cost the buyer another 13,000 rubles.

The toughest Samsung device ever

The Galaxy Note 9 is the smartphone with the largest battery capacity in a Samsung model. The Galaxy S9 Plus offers 3500 mAh, for example, while the Note 8 offers 3300 mAh. B O The larger battery allows the gadget to work for more than 11 hours in video playback mode, which is 1.5 hours more than that of related models. ... With Quick Charge technology, it takes 134 minutes to fully charge the Galaxy Note 9 - just 10 minutes longer than the S9 and about 20 minutes longer than the Note 8. Optionally supported and wireless charger(Wireless Charging), but the corresponding "station" is not included in the package.

With a weight of 201 grams, the Note 9 is heavier than the G8, but not so much as to become too heavy. The difference with the Note 8 is mostly under the hood. The pace of work has become faster thanks to a modern processor with high clock frequency(2700 MHz, eight-core Exynos 9 9810). Now the gadget supports LTE Cat 18, however, this is only a theoretical advantage, since it is not always possible to use this network.

Stylus as a remote control

Small but useful functionality received a stylus (S-Pen), which can now be used as a Bluetooth remote for some applications. So, for example, you can give the camera a command to take a photo from a certain distance, start and stop music and movies, go back and forth through the browser, and something else. At the same time, applications and functions are not freely selectable, but are determined by the system. But you can customize the application that will be launched by pressing the stylus button.

Remote control becomes especially useful if you connect the Note 9 to a projector, TV, or monitor via a DeX station or HDM adapter, and then play a presentation or movie on your smartphone. The S Pen gets the energy it needs from the Note to run this feature. According to Samsung, the S Pen charges from 0 to 100 percent in 40 seconds, and then it's ready to use in 30 minutes. The stylus is suitable for drawing on the smartphone screen even with a completely empty battery.

Other S-Pen functions have been taken over from the predecessor model. Here you can still take notes on the off screen: for this you just need to remove the stylus from the "mine", after which you can take a note without unlocking the smartphone. The pressure-sensitive stylus is very well recognized. When entering handwritten text, there is no noticeable line pulling or delays, and sketches on Note are obtained very quickly. However, due to its design, the nib is bulky and hardly suitable for long-term use. If you want to spend hours drawing and writing on the Note 9, we recommend that you consider purchasing an additional S Pen in the classic pencil shape.

New Note display

The really noteworthy hardware difference is the display, which is marginally larger than the Note 8, measuring 6.4 inches instead of 6.3 inches with the same body size. With these screen sizes, it makes sense to use Multi function Window, which is included in the standard Android version... One-handed operation with such a giant display is, of course, impossible. But if it is nevertheless necessary, you can turn on the one-handed control mode with one gesture or click, which reduces the image on the screen.

Samsung has reduced the resolution of the OLED panel. But with 1440x2960 pixels, it still keeps the image sharp. At the same time, the fonts look acceptable even in the preinstalled Full-HD resolution+ (2220x1080 pixels). Unlock more high resolution in most cases it is not necessary and will require additional energy consumption.

The Note 9's standard brightness is 427.7 cd / m2, which is good but not great. However, in direct sunlight Note screen 9 can be automatically scaled up to as much as 721 cd / m2. Problems with dark screen on the outdoors you definitely never will. White balance - top-end, colors - OLED-typically saturated. If desired, the screen settings can be set to a more natural color range and customize individual colors in detail.

What about dual cameras?

The dual camera setup surprised us a bit in our benchmarks, as the Note 9 uses basically the same technique as the Galaxy S9 Plus. This means that the main 12-megapixel camera, depending on the situation, works with an aperture of F2.4 or F1.5. In theory, this should provide more high level detail at dusk, that is, in low light conditions. Additionally, the Note 8's Optical Image Stabilizer helps reduce the risk of blurry photos.

We were counting on a small but visible increase in quality compared to the Note 8, or in other words: we expected S9 Plus-level photos. However, a comparison of the images showed a different ratio, according to at least, in poor lighting conditions. At daylight The images captured on the Note 9 and Galaxy S9 are nearly identical in terms of detail. In poor lighting conditions, on the other hand, the Note 9 is noticeably inferior not only to the Galaxy S9, but even to the Note 8.

The photos here are better than most smartphones in our test sample, but upon closer examination, it is striking that the Note 9's images are more noisy, and fine details are preserved a little worse than in the photos of older Samsung models. Most likely it is the software that is not 100% adapted to the new hardware, and Samsung will be able to fix the situation with a firmware update. But for now we are forced to conclude that camera Note 9 is on the same level as the Note 8.

Pictures taken in low light: Note 9 (left), Note 8 (center) and Galaxy S9

The second lens, behind which is also an optical image stabilizer, is used for 2x zoom. In this case, switching between the two lenses is made indissoluble.

Nothing special has been done with the front 8MP camera. The photos are good, although they lack clarity a little. An interesting one is the extended selfie mode, in which you can slightly twist the smartphone to frame the frame, as in panoramic shooting, a larger scene has hit, for example, with a group of people. In this case, you can also use the famous S9 AR-Emoji, place stickers and add other creative effects and settings for shooting portraits, food, landscapes and more.

Front camera: Right at 100% magnification

For more control, the Pro mode, known from previous Samsung models, is available, in which there are manual aperture and ISO settings. Additionally, the Note 9 provides photography tips. For example, the camera recognizes whether someone blinked at the moment of the photo or moved their head too much, including a corresponding warning. If such textual tooltips become unnerving after a while, they can be easily disabled in the corresponding settings menu.

There are also several features available to videographers that have been taken over from the Galaxy S9. 4K video can be recorded at up to 60 frames per second (fps), and in Full-HD resolution - up to 240 fps (Slow-Motion, that is, slow-motion video). Super-Slo-Mo recording is also possible: in 720p resolution (1280 × 720 pixels), but with extreme 960 fps.

Samsung Android System

Adapted by Samsung operating room Android system 8.1 may seem to fans of the brand for a long time, because essentially nothing has changed in it. The manufacturer continues to offer applications (own and from third party developers), which can optionally be installed during the first setup. Some applications will be on board by default, and only some of them can be manually uninstalled.

At extreme large size built-in memory, you can ignore a couple of additional applications at all. And if icons bother you unnecessary programs, just darken them.

In general, the set of software here is self-sufficient and, thanks to numerous assistants and search functions, will make life easier even for novice users.

Only annoying that developed by the manufacturer voice assistant Bixby still cannot be used with voice commands in Russian. Therefore, the aforementioned button and Bixby software turn out to be unnecessary, as on the S9 and Note 8. At the same time, you will not be able to uninstall or completely deactivate Bixby either.

Does it make sense to buy a Note 9?

The answer to this question depends, of course, on starting position cases. For Note 8 owners, the difference between devices will be so insignificant that buying a new item is hardly justified. Yes, I got the stylus useful trick as a remote control function, the performance is better, the battery is thicker, and the display is 0.1 inches larger. The built-in memory can hold a lot of data and the sound is reproduced here in stereo.

All this is very useful innovations, however, they are not worth a surcharge of 30-50 thousand rubles, which will have to be paid depending on the version of Note 9. So the owners of Note 8 or Galaxy S9 can safely wait for the release of the tenth version of the smartphone.

Galaxy Note 9 as a daily smartphone.

“It's not easy every year,” said Koch, president and general manager subdivisions Samsung Mobile at the Galaxy Note 9 launch event. He talked about pushing boundaries flagship smartphones and after spending a few days with the Galaxy Note 9, we understand why he says so.

The rear-facing fingerprint scanner has been relocated to accommodate the dual cameras, much better than its side position. Even with this change, the phone is large enough to make it difficult for some people to get to the scanner.

REVIEW: FEATURES AND NEW S-PEN

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 we tested is powered by the Exynos 9810 chipset, which also features the Galaxy S9. Combined with 6GB of RAM, the Note 9's interface flies, apps launch and switch instantly. For experienced users Samsung offers a version with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Network performance has also been improved with the Galaxy Note 9 to support LTE at 1.2Gbps, although we couldn't find a network fast enough to support those speeds.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 relies on the stylus, as the main difference from the competition, it is equipped with Bluetooth with low power consumption and a rechargeable battery that can offer 30 minutes of use after 40 seconds of charging.

You can use the S Pen to control presentations or the camera to take pictures and switch between the front and rear cameras. We honestly don't see much value in this solution, but Samsung is also releasing an SDK for app developers. It would be interesting to see where this leads - we would like to see games in the style of Nintendo DS.

FEEDBACK: BATTERY

Samsung claims the Galaxy Note 9 has the largest battery ever in its history. With a capacity of 4,000 mAh, the Note 9 has a 20% larger battery than its predecessor.

The first three days of using the Galaxy Note 9 were mixed in terms of timing autonomous work what was expected from the new phone. Downloading apps and setting them up with an always-on network connection can drain your battery quite quickly. We'll leave the battery decision for a full review.

REVIEW: UPDATE CAMERA ( AI)

Cameras new Galaxy The Note 9 is the same dual camera module that you may have seen on the Galaxy S9 Plus launched earlier this year. The camera block now has horizontal orientation but you get the same 12MP dual-aperture primary sensor as well as a secondary 12MP sensor fixed at 2x magnification.

Samsung has made software changes such as the camera app now has Scene Recognition, allowing up to twenty scenarios to be identified and the best photos... We have seen a similar solution on other Android smartphones such as. You can turn this off if you don't like software interference with the photo process.

Samsung is also adding a defect detection feature that triggers right after you take a photo to tell you if the photo was blurry or if the person in the photo has closed their eyes. We tried to test this feature but couldn't get it to work.

Here are some sample photos of the Galaxy Note 9's camera different conditions lighting.

REVIEW: MORE TESTING
