Individual configuration

Moto Z Play is part of a new modular series of smartphones from Lenovo. The main idea here is the following: each user can configure the purchased smartphone depending on their own needs.

This is the theory. Behind it is a modular telephone that can be converted with a couple of hand movements.

For example, you can remove the JBL speakers from your smartphone by installing an additional battery in their place. The mid-range phone Moto Z Play is in some way a stripped-down version of the flagship Moto Z and will cost about 40,000 rubles.

That being said, you get a 5.5-inch smartphone with an AMOLED display. Unlike the regular Moto Z, the Play screen is only Full-HD (1920 x 1080 pixels). During the test tests, the device was distinguished by sufficient brightness and good contrast (146: 1). There is a capacitive button under the display.

At first glance, its platform looks like the "Home" button, but this impression is deceiving. This "tubercle" functions only as a fingerprint scanner. Inside the smartphone is a Snapdragon 625. This is a solid mid-range processor from Qualcomm, helped by 3 GB of RAM. That being said, the Moto Z Play's performance is pretty decent.

Battery miracle

Lenovo has placed a 3510 mAh battery under the cover of this smartphone. Even on paper, these numbers look solid, especially since the capacious battery did not have a negative impact on the design of the device: Moto Z Play is thin and fits comfortably in the hand. However, it is quite obvious that when buying a mid-range smartphone, the user will have to come to terms with some flaws in the finishing of the device compared to the top models from Samsung and Apple.

That being said, during the online battery life test, the Moto Z Play performs in an amazing way. This smartphone managed to hold out for almost 12 hours, thereby establishing the best value ever achieved within the walls of our test laboratory. Even in terms of charging speed, the Z Play shows its strengths. In particular, the battery is fully charged in just 2 hours.

Those for whom this is not enough can use the Lenovo add-on module. The so-called Incipio extension is simply attached to the back of the smartphone. At the same time, all modules have magnets that are strong enough to be securely fixed behind the phone.

The battery module is 6.2 mm thick and makes the device about 100 grams heavier. But, according to the manufacturer's promises, it will provide additional energy for 22 hours of battery life. This powerbank should cost 89 euros (6,000 rubles).

The Moto Z Play has a battery that should add power for another 22 hours.

Want more?

On the back of the Moto Z Play is a 16-megapixel camera that is capable of capturing 4K video. In the previous model, the Moto X Play, we were fascinated by the camera results, but in the case of the Play, however, there were reasons for criticism. In particular, if the photographs are very good in daylight, then the quality of the images decreases as the level of illumination decreases. Autofocus also disappointed us a lot in testing. Out of 18 shots, only 5 turned out to be clear.

The Moto Z Play will be delivered with the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow operating system, which the manufacturer has practically not modified. The well-known Google Now Launcher is used as a launcher. In addition, in addition to the aforementioned battery module, others already exist. For example, in addition to speakers from JBL, you can even connect a projector to a smartphone.

Alternative options

Modular phone: LG G5

In addition to the Moto Z Play, there is currently another smartphone with a modular design on the market:. The display of this mobile phone features high pixel density and good contrast, and the processor is fast. When buying this model from LG, you will have to come to terms with the slight flaws of the camera. The battery could also be slightly more durable. Currently, you can get the LG G5 for about RUR 28,000.

Motorola Moto X Play 16GB

The predecessor model, during testing, distinguished itself with a solid battery life and a 21-megapixel camera that captures natural, detailed photos. The Full-HD display here is bright and has good contrast. You can get Moto X Play for about 18,000 rubles.

Motorola Moto Z Play is a weighty 5.5-inch phablet with a distinctive design that can be diversified with replaceable covers and modules.

The phone looks really unusual thanks to the smoothed edges. Its upper and lower ends were made convex, and closer to the edges they were sharply rounded. In addition, we note the fingerprint scanner - it is very small. In addition, at first you might think that the scanner is combined with the Home button, but this is just a sensor. All phone control keys are touch sensitive and are located at the bottom of the screen. Above the display is the moto inscription with an earpiece under it, a front camera peephole and a flash around the edges.

The rear panel of the Motorola Moto Z Play looks even more interesting. In our case, the smartphone had a nylon cover in the manner, but not as rough and with a more complex pattern. Curiously, the cover can be easily removed - it is held not by latches, but by one magnet. Separately, we note that during the tests, the panel was held securely. Under the cover, you will see the Moto Z Play "naked", with a slippery glass surface and a heavily bulging lens. The entire glass surface is covered with concentric circles, which diverge in waves from the camera of the device. There is a docking station at the bottom of the back panel, to which you can attach various Moto Mods or a removable cover. Other unusual details include slightly convex side ends, a USB-C connector and very small power and volume keys.

The dimensions of a smartphone with a nylon cover are 156.4 × 76.4 × 9.2 mm, and it weighs 187 grams. Without a cover, the device is a little lighter and thinner, but in this case the lens sticks out from the body. In comparison, 5.5-inch smartphones are both lighter and thinner. In terms of weight, the phone is comparable to a 6-inch one.

Despite the removable cover, the Moto Z Play is non-separable. The smartphone has splash and drip resistance, but don't confuse this with IP standards. You cannot bathe your phone, but it is unlikely to die from rain or spilled coffee. The build quality is excellent, but its own glass back is easily scratched.

The Motorola Moto Z Play is available in two colors - black and white.

Screen - 4.4

Motorola Moto Z Play got a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen with Full HD-resolution. Despite not the highest brightness, we can still call the display high quality.

The phone screen received Full HD-resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels). The image looks sharp on it, the pixel density is 401 per inch (like y). The screen uses a Super AMOLED matrix for natural blacks. In addition, we note the presence of a protective glass Gorilla Glass 3 and a fairly effective oleophobic coating. The screen collects almost no fingerprints and is easy to clean from them.

The measured range of display brightness is not the widest - from 6 to 363 cd / m2. In the dark, the screen almost does not blind the eye, but on a sunny day it is difficult to read information from it. The smartphone has an adaptive brightness function, but it is slow, responding only to strong changes in lighting conditions. The viewing angles were wide, but slightly at the same than the average for this type of display. In addition, at a very large angle (about 170 degrees), the image takes on a greenish tint. It's not that scary, we noticed the same effect even in the flagship. But the screen has excellent color reproduction, besides, it is one of the first with a very wide color gamut - 100% from sRGB and 99% from Adobe RGB! However, measurements with a colorimeter show a very low color error. Nevertheless, the screen is hardly the best. It lacks gimmicks like gloved mode or picture settings. In this case, there are only two color modes - "normal" and "vivid" with saturated hues.

Cameras - 4.7

The Motorola Moto Z Play smartphone has received advanced cameras at 16 and 5 megapixels. They will be able to replace on the go or take a selfie, although they are inferior to top solutions.

In our opinion, in terms of the level of shooting, the main photomodule is comparable to - above average, but does not reach the flagship solutions. The Moto Z Play uses a relatively large 1 / 2.4 "OmniVision OV16860 sensor. Individual pixels are also rather large - 1.3 microns, which increases the camera's light sensitivity. As a rule, they are smaller in phones, but in the top-end one is larger, 1.55 microns. The camera uses a dual focusing system - laser and phase. Note the already typical for today aperture width of F2.0 and the absence of an optical stabilization system.

Typically, Motorola phone cameras get an atypical interface, and the Moto Z Play is no exception. Basic settings pop up by "swipe" from left to right, which is already unusual. But the most interesting thing is the choice of the type of shutter. You can choose the option with a separate shutter button or shoot "tap" on the screen. In the second case, you will see a separate circle with which you can adjust focus and exposure. We saw the same thing in another smartphone from the company,. The choice of shooting modes is small, from the unusual there is only "Auto HDR" and "Professional". In the latter case, the following set of parameters is available:

  • focusing (macro to infinity)
  • white balance (auto, or four different options)
  • shutter speed (1/6000 to 1/6 second)
  • ISO (100 to 3200)
  • exposure (from −2 to 2).

As you can see, the customization options are not that wide and inferior to the same.

As for the quality of shooting, the camera does its job well. Dual focusing works clearly and quickly, but the speed is inferior to the first "laser". In addition, during the tests, the phone stubbornly refused to shoot macro, as if it did not understand what they wanted from it. But the result is still worth the trouble - the pictures are of high quality. The level of detail in the frames is quite high, but the clarity drops off at the edges of the frame. However, this is a common problem with high pixel count cameras.

The HDR mode copes well with different lighting conditions, the photos look quite natural. In the dark, the camera starts to "make noise", but within reason. True, she sometimes lies with color rendition: some colors may turn out to be richer or paler than they really are. Shooting panoramas is also not her strong point. Despite the long processing of the photo, the frames are glued together at random. In addition, the Moto Z Play clearly saves on pixels by shooting panoramas in low resolution.

The 5MP front camera has flash, HDR shooting and a beautifying filter. Otherwise, it is quite typical for its resolution. The front camera copes well with taking selfies on the street and indoors. The frames are slightly lacking in dynamic range, so it's better to shoot selfies with HDR. Also note that the front camera can shoot video up to Full HD resolution.

Working with text - 4.0

The phone uses a standard and fairly comfortable keyboard from Google. There is Swype (continuous input) and a set of numbers by pressing the keys of the upper row. Also note the quick switch between languages using a separate button. Otherwise, everything is typical. You can add drawing borders between the keys and change the keyboard theme, or rather, its colors. If this keyboard does not suit you, you can download any other one.

Internet - 3.0

The Moto Z Play comes preinstalled with the Google Chrome browser. The performance of the smartphone is sufficient for a smooth multi-tab experience. Chrome is not very functional, but it has the option to sync history and bookmarks with the desktop version of the browser. In addition, you can mark the "Incognito" mode and fit the size of the text by double-clicking on the pre-selected size.

Communications - 5.0

Moto Z Play has a fairly wide range of communications:

  • dual band Wi-Fi a / b / g / n
  • Bluetooth 4.0 with A2DP profile
  • LTE support
  • A-GPS
  • NFC chip.

Only IrDA and FM radio are missing. A USB type C connector is used for charging and connecting to a computer. The only pity is that the bundle does not include a separate cable for it. It is worth noting the card tray - it is double-sided. On the one hand, there are two slots for nanoSIM, and on the other, for a memory card. Thus, one tray simultaneously holds all three cards, without having to choose between them. We hope that manufacturers will pick up this useful feature.

Multimedia - 4.2

Moto Z Play supports the most common audio and video formats and produces pretty high quality sound.

Like most phones, the Moto Z Play didn’t play audio tracks in AC-3, but it did FLAC. When it comes to video, the phone is not friendly with the AVC codec regardless of the video format - be it MOV, MKV or AVI. During the tests, the smartphone refused to play videos with this codec.

The Moto Z Play has a fairly high sound quality in. According to the test results, it has a fairly uniform frequency response, without blockages at low frequencies, with a wide dynamic range (87.4 dB) and a good noise level - 87.5 dB. The smartphone is preinstalled with a typical Google Play Music audio player with a complicated interface. True, this is not even a player, but a music service with its own subscription. It's good that even in the free version you are given access to an equalizer with sound tuning by frequencies.

Initially, there is no video player on the phone. Videos play directly from the Gallery app. In it, they can be cut, flipped or removed. But sometimes the app doesn't even want to rewind the video to a certain point, always playing it from the beginning.

Battery - 4.8

According to the test results, the autonomy of Motorola Moto Z Play can be called very high. The device was enough for us for one and a half to two days of work, but a very active user will still land the phone in a day.

What is the secret to the success of the Moto Z Play battery? This is a relatively high battery capacity (3510 mAh), an economical screen type and an energy efficient filling.

So, the phone withstood 15.5 hours of video marathon (HD video at maximum brightness plus Airplane mode). By this parameter, it even surpassed the Samsung Galaxy S7. True, the point is not the highest pixel density and display brightness. In case of constant low load (player mode in headphones) Moto Z Play also performed well - 133 hours, outrunning the long-liver and the big one. In addition, the battery allows you to shoot for a long time on the phone - shooting a 10-minute video in 4K "ate" only 5% of the charge. Even in games, the smartphone keeps excellently - 5-6% for half an hour of racing in Asphalt Extreme. The numbers are great, but miracles don't happen in daily use. The device is still enough for one and a half to two days of work. Although the more economical owners of the phone will have enough for a longer period.

The Moto Z Play comes with a pretty powerful 3A TurboPower charger. It charges the device in about an hour and forty-five minutes, which is relatively fast.

Performance - 3.8

Motorola Moto Z Play has a modern mid-range chipset. It is sufficient for smooth operation and most games.

The smartphone uses an eight-core Qualcomm MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 processor (all cores operate at a frequency of up to 2.0 GHz) with 3 GB of RAM and Adreno 506 graphics. toys. We did not notice any problems with the speed of work, except that in the most difficult games we will have to switch to medium graphics settings. In operation, the smartphone hardly heats up. For half an hour of racing in "Asphalt" the body warmed up to 35.6 degrees, which is not felt at all. According to this parameter, it turned out to be even better than the cool one. As for synthetic tests, the phone showed the following results in them:

  • GeekBench 4 - 2459 points (already the old one got less)
  • AnTuTu 7 - 62057 (half as low as that)
  • 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited - 13794 (a couple thousand more than the budget).

Memory - 4.5

The amount of permanent memory Moto Z Play is 32 GB, of which 23.8 GB is available to the user. For most, this will be enough, but music lovers and fans of 4K video will have to arm themselves with a memory card. The smartphone supports microSD cards up to 2 TB.

Peculiarities

Motorola Moto Z Play runs under the control of "pure", but with some proprietary chips and capabilities. Soon, the manufacturer promises an update to.

The smartphone stands out for its high autonomy and AMOLED display. But the most important thing in it is the presence of removable covers and Moto Mods. Using them, a smartphone can be turned into an advanced camera, a projector, or simply add an additional battery. Another nice feature is the double-sided tray with three card slots so you don't have to choose between additional communication or memory.

The phone has a lot of proprietary chips for control. For example, there is an active screen function - it turns on to unlock when you take the device out of your pocket or pull your hand towards it. There are other features typical for Motorola: launching the camera by rotating the phone around its axis, turning on the flashlight with a chopping motion of the hand, and a number of others. Also note the fingerprint scanner - it seems small, but it works quickly and the first time. In addition, the scanner is functional: with a touch, you can activate or lock the screen. For reference, it can only remember up to five fingerprints.

A type

Determining the type of device (phone or smartphone?) Is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to opt for a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly shorter than that of a simple phone.

The main feature of this smartphone with a capacious battery is the connection of interchangeable modules that expand its capabilities, for example, a camera with optical zoom, speaker system, an additional battery or a projector. About the pros and cons of the new product - in a detailed review of the Lenovo Moto Z Play.

The idea of modular smartphones, which has been in the air for a long time, has not yet been properly implemented. The fact is that the replacement of the processor, RAM or screen remains at the desired level so far. Basically, everything is limited to increasing autonomy, improving sound reproduction, as well as various options for photos and videos.

The most striking example of the practical implementation of the modular approach is considered to be the flagship LG G5 and its simplified modification (our review), which provides for the connection of modules from the LG Friends set, including, in particular, LG Hi-Fi Plus (Hi-Fi audio player) and LG Cam Plus (camera control unit with mechanical buttons and built-in battery).

At the same time, Lenovo presented a smartphone at the Berlin IFA 2014 show (our review), which differed not only in a multi-layer case with a gradient color palette, but also in the connected Vibe Xtension branded accessories - a JBL speaker system and an additional battery. And now, two years later, together with the Moto Z family of smartphones (two models of which are presented on the Russian market - Moto Z and Moto Z Play), Lenovo announced a new collection of modular accessories - Moto Mods (more about them below).

Replaceable modulesMotoMods

So, Moto Mods is a collection of replaceable modules that add specific features and new functions to smartphones of the Moto Z family. Each of these accessories is attached to the back of the device and is almost instantly fixed with built-in magnets. The necessary communication between the plug-in module and the Moto Z takes place via a dedicated interface.

First of all, it is worth noting the interchangeable back panels of Moto Style Shells. According to the manufacturer, all of them are made of the highest quality materials, including natural wood, leather with various textures, patterned fabrics, etc. The dimensions of such panels are 154x72x2 mm, and the weight, depending on the material, ranges from 25 to 32 grams. Price - from 1 990 rubles.

Hasselblad True Zoom Photo Module was developed in cooperation with the Swedish company Hasselblad. Key options include 10x optical zoom, RAW support, optical image stabilization, Xenon flash, and free access to Hasselblad Phocus software. The module's camera received a 12-megapixel BSI sensor (optical size 1 / 2.3 inches), as well as a lens with an aperture of f / (3.5-6.5) and an EGF (25-250) mm. The overall dimensions of this replaceable module are 152.3x72.9x (9-15.1) mm, and the weight is 145 g. The price is 19,990 rubles.

The Incipio offGRID battery provides an additional capacity of 2 220 mAh, which allows you to extend the autonomous operation of your smartphone up to 22 hours in active mode. Dimensions and weight of Incipio offGRID do not exceed 152.7x73.5x6.2 mm and 79 g, respectively. The price of such a battery is 3,990 rubles.

The Moto JBL Soundboost stereo speaker system received two dynamic radiators (each with a diameter of 27 mm), while the total power reaches 6 W (2x3 W). The capacity of the built-in battery (1000 mAh) provides a battery life of up to 10 hours. The dimensions and weight of Moto JBL Soundboost are 152x73x13 mm and 145 g, respectively. Price - 6,990 rubles.

The Insta-Share DLP projector is capable of displaying images on virtually any flat wall. The resolution of its WVGA-display is 854x480 pixels, while the size of the picture reaches 70 inches. The passport values of brightness and contrast are 50 lumens and 400: 1, respectively. In addition to adjusting the backlight and image tilt, the module provides manual adjustment of the focal length. The built-in battery (1,100 mAh) extends the battery life by 60 minutes. The overall dimensions of the projector are 152x74x11 mm, and the weight is 125 g. The Insta-Share price is 22,990 rubles.

Design, ergonomics

In full face, the Moto Z Play smartphone looks not quite ordinary, one might even say original. Its entire front panel, right down to the metal frame, is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It is rounded at the edges in the current fashion, but where the glass ends, an aluminum frame with a sharp edge begins. The non-standard image is emphasized by an LED flash for the front camera, as well as a small square platform for a fingerprint scanner, to the left of which a hole for a microphone was placed. But the rear view of the "naked" Moto Z Play, to put it mildly, is not very presentable. Not only are the bevels of the metal frame sharp, but also the photo-module of the main camera protrudes too much above the glass surface, and the gold-plated contacts of the connector for connecting Moto Mods modules take up a lot of space.

However, all this "geometric disgrace" can quickly hide one of the removable panels Moto Style Shells, including the one that is included in the standard package:

Note that even unencumbered by any Moto Mods accessories, the Moto Z Play smartphone turned out to be larger than its 5.5-inch flagship Moto Z, not only in terms of dimensions (156.4x76.4 mm versus 153.4x75.3 mm), but also by weight (165g vs. 136g) and thickness (6.99mm vs. 5.19mm). There are two main body colors for Moto Z Play - black-silver (black / silver / black) and white-gold (grayish-white / golden / white). At the same time, the words "silver" and "golden" are due only to the color of the metal frame. A special water-repellent coating is designed to create a barrier that prevents a small amount of moisture from getting inside the device (splashes, light rain, etc.)

As already noted, the front side of the new smartphone, including the screen, is completely covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with an oleophobic coating. At the same time, around the decorative slot for the speaker, under which the Moto text logo was applied, they assembled an LED flash (left), a front camera (right), as well as light and proximity sensors (right). Note that the Moto Z Play speaker, which turned out to be one in two faces, serves not only as "spoken", but also "multimedia".

The display of the novelty received on-screen buttons "Back", "Home" and "Recent applications" in the form of icons "triangle", "circle", "square". But on the insert under the screen was a miniature fingerprint scanner, to the left of which there was a hole for one of the three available microphones ("spoken").

The left edge of the case is empty, and on the right there are separate, unusually small, volume keys, as well as a power / lock button with embossed notches.

The upper end of the case was occupied with a hole for the second microphone and a locked slot, the key from which is included in the kit with the smartphone. On the one side, on a special tray, there are places for two subscriber identification modules of the nanoSIM (4FF) format, and on the other, for a microSD memory card. A similar solution has already been used, for example, in. Frankly speaking, this option is quite pleasant for these times.

In addition to the symmetrical USB Type-C connector at the bottom, there is a place for a 3.5 mm audio headset connector (CTIA TRRS). From the inscriptions applied here, you can find out the name of the smartphone model and the country of production.

The back of the case is made of textured tempered glass from Corning, adorned with the graphic Moto logo. In its lower part, in addition to the connector for plugging in replaceable Moto Mods modules, there is a hole for the third microphone, and in the upper part - for the main photo module. The latter, in addition to the lens, also includes a laser rangefinder and a dual LED flash. The NFC antenna area is located on either side of the photo module. On the plastic cover with a textile texture included with the smartphone, there was a place not only for the graphic Moto logo, but also for the holes for the main photo module and microphone.

Taking into account the 5.5-inch screen size, it was not very convenient to place the keys for controlling the volume above the power / lock button. Moreover, blocking and unlocking a smartphone is quite easy with a fingerprint scanner. But the main thing is that when using replaceable Moto Mods, the device, which is not very elegant anyway, becomes (taking into account the increased thickness and weight) frankly bulky.

Screen, camera, sound

The Moto Z Play smartphone, like the Moto Z, was equipped with a 5.5-inch screen based on a Super AMOLED matrix. However, unlike the flagship of the family, the resolution was reduced from Quad HD (2560x1440 pixels) to Full HD (1920x1080 pixels). But the scheme with two subpixels (PenTile RGBG) instead of three (RGB), of course, remained. At the same time, the density of dots per inch, according to the manufacturer's calculations, is 403 ppi. The absence of an air gap between the sensor layer and the matrix provides good anti-glare properties of the screen and the ability to use it even in bright light. Let's remind that the undoubted advantage of displays with active matrixes is their economical power consumption. The screen is protected from minor damage by Gorilla Glass 3, and the oleophobic coating applied to it helps to easily remove grease stains.

The Moto Z Play's capacitive touchscreen supports multitouch, while AntTuTu Tester has confirmed that up to ten simultaneous touches are recognized. The backlight level can be adjusted manually, or you can use the automatic adjustment to the light sensor ("Adaptive adjustment") for this. There are two display modes in the settings. In "Normal" mode, colors appear calmer and warmer. But choosing the "Vivid" option allows you to fully enjoy the cold acidity of the Super AMODED display colors.

The main "highlight" was the Moto Display option (available through the Moto app), which allows you to display the current time, battery charge and various notifications on the locked screen (you need to take the device in your hand or bring your palm to the screen). Recall that a similar feature in Lumia smartphones is known as Glance Screen, and in models - Always-On Display.

Some sources claim that the Moto Z Play uses a 16-megapixel OmniVision PureCel Plus-S OV16860 sensor (1 / 2.39-inch optical size) for the main camera with an increased pixel size (1.3 microns versus the usual 1.12 microns), and for front - OmniVision OmniBSI-2 OV5693 (optical size 1/4 ", pixel size - 1.4 microns). However, no official confirmation of this could be found. The manufacturer indicates that the main camera with a two-tone LED flash received an f / 2.0 lens, as well as phase and laser (infrared) autofocus. The maximum resolution of the main camera is achieved with the classic aspect ratio of the frame (4: 3) and is 4608x3456 pixels (16 MP), and with a widescreen (16: 9) - 4608x2592 pixels (11.9 MP). I would like to note the rather confident shooting with this camera in low light, which is quite common in the dull gray Moscow winter. Examples of photos can be viewed.

But the front camera, it seems, inherited from the flagship of the Moto Z family. Equipped with an LED flash, it is content with an f / 2.2 aperture lens, an 85-degree viewing angle and a fixed focus.

"Selfies" can be done both with "beautification" (manual or automatic), and without it, and, moreover, in the dark with a flash. The maximum resolution for selfies with the classic aspect ratio (4: 3) is 2592x1944 pixels (5 MP), and for widescreen gruff (16: 9) - 2592x1458 pixels (3.8 MP).

The main camera can record videos in 4K resolution (3840x2160 pixels) at a frame rate of 30 fps, while the front camera is limited to Full HD quality (1920x1080 pixels) with the same frame rate. At the same time, for a video slowed down four times (slo-mo), the main camera provides the quality of shooting [email protected] fps (1280x720 pixels). All content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - sound).

The interface of the Camera app is pretty simple. Depending on the setting, you can take a picture either by touching the screen anywhere, or by tapping on the "Shutter" icon button. To the right of it, an icon was placed to select the current mode - "Photo", "Video", "Panorama", "Slow motion" and "Professional mode". In the latter case, at the "orbital" settings, the values of ISO, shutter speed, exposure levels, white balance and focus are independently set. By the way, Auto HDR mode is provided for both cameras.

You can change the scale (x1-x8) on the viewfinder by moving your finger up or down the screen. It is convenient to go to the gallery of pictures with a swipe to the left. Swipe to the right opens the settings panel. The Quick Capture option lets you open the Camera app or switch from the main camera to the front camera (and vice versa). To do this, you need to quickly turn your wrist twice with your smartphone. To adjust focus and exposure, the "paperclip" in the viewfinder should be dragged to the desired location, where the control can easily adjust the brightness of the picture. It is worth noting that QR and one-dimensional barcodes, as well as business cards (correct only in the Latin alphabet) are scanned automatically, you just need to point the camera at the corresponding object.

As for the sound, playback through the "multimedia" speaker, which is also "conversational" (and vice versa), is surprisingly clean even at maximum volume. However, advanced music lovers, most likely, will focus on the replacement module for the Moto JBL Soundboost stereo system. At first, you will have to use the pre-installed Google Music application as an audio player. There is no built-in FM tuner in the Moto Z Play. An audio headset is not provided with a smartphone.

Filling, performance

The Moto Z Play smartphone hides under the hood the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953) platform, made in compliance with the 14nm design standards, which has a positive impact on the overall energy efficiency.

Less heat dissipation allowed the clock speed of eight 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 cores to be increased to 2 GHz. The new chip supports 4K video recording (AVC and HEVC codecs) and cameras with sensors up to 24 MP. The X9 LTE modem provides data transmission LTE Cat.7 / 13 (300/150 Mbit / s) and work with Wi-Fi networks of the ac standard (this function is not implemented in this smartphone). Graphics accelerator Adreno 506 helps to cope with screen resolutions up to 1900x1200 pixels at a frequency of 60 frames per second. In addition, support for Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging is built into the MSM8953 chip (Lenovo preferred its own TurboPower standard). The base configuration of the Moto Z Play is complemented by 3 GB of 32-bit LPDDR3 RAM (933 MHz), which is controlled by a single-channel controller. In terms of performance, Snapdragon 625 occupies an intermediate place between Snapdragon 617 and Snapdragon 652. This is not contradicted by the results obtained in the tests carried out.

So, on the synthetic benchmarks AnTuTu Benchmark, the new smartphone scored almost 63 thousand "virtual parrots".

Intermediate results are also seen when evaluating the amount of "horsepower" and the efficiency of using processor cores (Geekbench 4).

But at the High Performance and High Quality settings of the Epic Citadel visual test, the frame rate practically did not change, and only slightly decreased at the Ultra High Quality setting.

On the universal gaming benchmark 3DMark, where Moto Z Play was tested on the recommended Sling Shot Extreme set, again an average result was recorded - 470 points.

The total number of points "knocked out" by the smartphone on the Base Mark OS II cross-platform benchmark was 1,000.

After turning on the smartphone, about 9 GB of 32 GB of internal memory was used. To expand storage, Moto Z Play has a separate slot for a microSD / HC / XC memory card up to 2 TB in the SIM-card tray. In addition, thanks to the support of the USB-OTG technology, you can also connect a USB storage device to the device.

Two subscriber identification modules of the nanoSIM (4FF) format are connected to one radio module and operate in DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) mode. In the settings of SIM-cards, it is proposed to determine the profile of their use. The set of 4G frequency bands contains the most popular in Russia - FDD-LTE Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz) and Band 20 (800 MHz). Among other wireless communications, it is worth noting the Wi-Fi module 802.11 a / b / g / n / (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz), as well as Bluetooth 4.0 LE and NFC interfaces.

Thus, using the NFC interface (with support for Mifare Classic technology), supplemented by the Moscow Transport Cards application, you can find out the balance not only of the Moscow Troika card, but also of the Strelka card near Moscow.

GPS and GLONASS satellite systems are used to determine the location and navigation. A-GPS mode (cellular and Wi-Fi networks) is also available.

The non-removable battery of the Moto Z Play is 3,510 mAh. This is significantly more than the flagship of the Moto Z family (2600 mAh). In particular, the manufacturer notes that the accumulated charge is enough for 50 hours of active use of the smartphone. Plus, thanks to TurboPower technology, the Moto Z Play's battery fills up enough in just 15 minutes to run for another 9-10 hours. For this, the set with this smartphone comes with a 15-watt charger, rated for a current of 3 A, with a "tightly" fixed cable. Given the high current strength, such a precaution from the manufacturer is fully justified, only they "forgot" to include a separate USB Type-C cable for communication with a PC in the smartphone package.

After 5-hour tests, the AnTuTu Tester program showed a record result for the battery - 16,135 points. At the same time, every hour of continuous playback of test videos (in MP4 format with hardware decoding in Full HD quality and at full brightness) reduced the battery charge by an average of 6% (for 7 hours). In general, an enviable autonomy.

As you know, the most "gluttonous" component of a smartphone is its screen. Even in the case of the Super AMOLED display, the settings should not neglect the limitation of the period of its activity. The battery life is also intended to extend the power saving mode, which is activated either forcibly or automatically, when the battery level is 5% or 15%. Savings come from reduced performance, and by turning off background traffic, geolocation and vibration alerts.

Features of the software

The Moto Z Play smartphone runs on Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow), the functionality of which has been extended with Moto and Moto Mods applications. In the coming months (probably not earlier than March), the manufacturer promises an over the air update to the latest version - Android 7.0 (Nougat). It is reported that along with the innovations of the OS itself, including support for the Google Daydream virtual reality platform, Moto gestures will be improved to reduce the work area when using one hand.

After registering at least one fingerprint (the smartphone's dactcard stores the papillary patterns of only five fingers), the usual tap unlocks the smartphone, and the hold tap will lock it. The fingerprint scanner is also recommended to be used with third-party applications that provide this option, and, in addition, when paying for purchases.

One of the important branded applications that expand the capabilities of the standard software is Moto Assistant, which supports gestures and voice commands, and also manages on-screen notifications in Moto Display mode.

Purchase, conclusions

The main feature of Moto Z Play is undoubtedly the ability to connect replaceable Moto Mods, which allow it not only to change its appearance, but also to acquire additional functions. But among other members of the Moto Z family, the new smartphone stands out with a capacious battery, which, along with an energy-efficient platform and a Super AMOLED screen, provides it with a very high autonomy. The Moto Z Play also has a water-repellent coating of the case, proprietary TurboPower fast charging, separate connectors for simultaneous connection of two SIM-cards and a memory card, as well as a "pure" Android OS with the prospect of an upgrade to version 7.0 (Nougat).

Alas, the Moto Z Play's average performance isn't the only downside to this smartphone. Moreover, the overall picture is spoiled not so much by the meager equipment as by the high price of the smartphone itself, as well as some replaceable Moto Mods.

So, at the time of testing, for the Moto Z Play, which is positioned by the manufacturer for entertainment, they asked 34,990 rubles in the Lenovo branded store and large retail chains. At the same time, in terms of performance, this smartphone loses, in particular, to last year's flagship under the Huawei brand - (27,990 rubles), which received, for example, the now fashionable dual camera. However, the "music pro" turns out to be much faster than both of these devices, for the version with 64 GB of internal memory (4 GB of RAM) which was asked for only 29,990 rubles. As for the Moto Mods, for example, for 19,990 rubles (the cost of the Hasselblad True Zoom photo module), you can purchase a full-fledged smartphone with improved photo capabilities. Of course, the latter does not have a 10x optical zoom and support for the RAW format, but with it you will have to get used to the proprietary Flyme shell, etc. etc. Nevertheless, if you are not a devoted fan of the Motorola brand, then before purchasing the Moto Z Play, it is worth once again weighing the pros and cons. At the same time, for some, the decisive factor may be the availability of a VIP service for owners of smartphones of the Moto Z family.

Equipment

The white box with a round logo is nothing special, and you probably won't want to keep it after unpacking your smartphone. Lying inside the Moto Z Play is not alone. It comes with documentation in Russian, a clip for ejecting SIM cards and a Turbo Power charger (5V, 3A), as well as a MotoMods nylon magnetic panel. But a separate USB Type-C wire was not reported. You will have to purchase this accessory yourself.

Appearance

Changes in a successful, well-established and, moreover, original design are always perceived ambiguously. In the case of the new line of Motorola, which came under the control of Lenovo, radical changes are largely due to the implementation of the concept of plug-in modules, but some solutions cause confusion.

What is meant is not difficult to guess. Large - 156.4 x 76.4 x 6.99 mm white candy bar full of non-standard, sometimes strange solutions. Microphone holes on the front and back panels are striking, and the square-framed fingerprint sensor (not a button) was scolded by everyone after the announcement of the device. The plastic inserts for the antennas at the top and bottom are thick and look clumsy.

It's not obvious at first glance, but there was no room in the case for a second speaker. Moto Z Play has only one and is responsible at the same time for the transmission of the interlocutor's speech and for playing calls.
However, do not rush to get upset. In reality, the device looks much better than on advertising renders. A textile overlay on the back hides the contact pad and eliminates the camera protrusion, improving the overall experience of the device even with color mismatches.

The front panel has a front flash. An LED is hidden in the black window next to the sensors. Now it is not active, but it is possible that it will find use in addition to service codes. The 3.5mm jack is located on the bottom edge. The body is perfectly assembled. The manufacturer claims to protect the Z Play from moisture using a nano-coating, but the device cannot boast of Ingress Protection Rating certification.

Display

5.5 ”Super AMOLED panel with Full HD resolution and 403 ppi pixel density provides the Moto Display function. In sleep mode, the smartphone displays notifications on a completely black screen, including only those pixels that are necessary for image formation. You can check for notifications without touching your smartphone.

Despite the abandonment of infrared sensors, which were in previous models, Moto Z Play accurately recognizes hand waves at a distance of 10-12 centimeters from the screen and immediately lights up notifications. False positives are extremely rare.

The screen has, by and large, only one minus - the PWM backlight control. When the brightness is less than 50%, some people may experience discomfort due to screen flickering. The color rendition is customizable to taste: a natural version is available and an acid-bright version, which is traditional for AMOLED.

The white color is uniform, the contrast, as you would expect, is the reference, the backlight is bright. Glow-effect is absent, and colors are not distorted even at the most acute angles, only occasionally glare is visible on the protective glass. The oleophobic layer reliably protects the screen from dirt.

Iron

Inside the Moto Z Play, there is an eight-core system based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chip with an Adreno 506 graphics core and 3GB of fast LPDDR3 RAM. For permanent data storage, 32 GB is offered, of which a little less than 24 gigabytes are free. Dedicated slot "digests" microSD cards up to two 2 TB.

The fresh mid-range processor, halfway between the Snapdragon 617 and Snapdragon 652, delivers a smoother operating system and not outstanding but decent synthetic benchmarks.

Most of the gaming projects, predictably, work smartly - the frequency does not drop below 30 FPS. The lack of power was felt only at the maximum settings of World of tanks. There the frequency is up to 20 frames per second.

Despite the small sensor area, the fingerprint sensor works without problems: quickly and accurately. We almost forgot that there are companion chips in the case, which not only closely watch the hands, but wait for voice commands.

Software

Out of the box, Moto Z Play runs on Android 6.0.1, with no integrated add-ons or interface changes. Even the hidden menu has migrated from the firmware of the Google Nexus line. It makes no sense to talk about Android Marshmallow again, especially since after a couple of minor updates a major patch from Android 7.0 is about to arrive.

Additional chips were needed to implement the "chips" brought into a separate Moto application. The smartphone recognizes gestures with high accuracy. For example, shaking the phone you turn on the flashlight, making a circular motion - activate the camera.

You can set the voice command to activate the assistant on Moto Z Play yourself. It even works in sleep mode. All standard features of Google Now are available in Russian, but not additional features.

Connection

The Moto Z Play is equipped with a full slot for two Nano-SIM cards, so you don't have to sacrifice one of them to increase the storage capacity. The smartphone supports modern protocols, and you will not experience problems with cellular communication in any country in the world.

Dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, instant start-up GPS navigation - with all this we did not experience the slightest problem. The Bluetooth version could be newer, but the most important thing is support for an energy-saving profile - there is. The lone speaker was loud. The sound is clear and the absence of its second source is not really noticeable.

Battery

The Moto Z Play lasts an impressively long time. A non-removable 3510 mAh battery allowed the smartphone to hold out in the test for 13 hours and 5 minutes. At the time of this writing - the second place in the editorial rating of autonomy.

Branded adapter Turbo Power charges your smartphone by 50% in 30 minutes. Further, the process proceeds more slowly and the maximum energy reserve reaches after 1 hour and 30 minutes. The battery heats up noticeably, so we would not recommend playing while charging.

MotoMods

The accessories, made in the form of overlays on the back panel, are exactly what the Moto line was redesigned for. On the shelves, you can find an add-on speaker box from JBL, a pocket projector, an expensive Hasselblad 10x optical zoom camera.

We got our hands on add-ons that are simpler and more practical: Moto Style Shell - a textured pad that comes with the smartphone, and an additional Incipio offGRID Power Pack battery.

MotoMods are attached to the smartphone using magnets distributed over the entire area. Contrary to fears, the fit is snug. So, to remove the Incipio battery, you need to make a noticeable effort. Even a fall is unlikely to make it fall off. Nevertheless, there is a slight backlash.

The bottom of the MotoMods wobbles slightly from side to side. As a result of this, as well as in the case of careless removal of the panels, the metal contact pad is scratched.

If everything is clear with the textured panel - a good decorative option that serves to personalize the design, then the Incipio offGRID Power Pack should be discussed separately.

A plastic cover with a thickness of almost six millimeters hides a 2200 mAh battery. All you can do with it without a smartphone is to check the charge. By pressing a single button, you will see the LED blinking green or red, depending on the approximate energy level.

The exact percentage will appear in the smartphone's notification shade after connecting. In the highlighted menu item, a choice of two power modes is available (maintaining the smartphone battery at 80 or 100 percent).
