Description

JPG is a popular graphic format that is highly compressed, resulting in reduced image quality. Uses smooth color transition coding technology, providing the ability to significantly reduce the amount of data in the process of recording an image. Due to its small size, it is in demand among website owners, allowing you to really save traffic. It is also often used in memory cards of digital video cameras. The JPG algorithm is best suited for compressing photographs and paintings that contain realistic scenes with little color contrast. It is not recommended to use this format for compressing drawings and various types of graphics, since a strong contrast between adjacent pixels provokes the appearance of visible artifacts.

Technical details

The procedure for compressing digital images in JPG format is carried out in several stages. First, the photo is converted to the YCbCr color space, then it is divided into squares to determine the upper range of the color spectrum. Finally, colors and brightness are coded. JPEG uses a "lossy" compression system and discrete cosine transform technology. The format is both an ISO standard and an International Telecommunication Union standard. The file compression ratio ranges from 10:1 to 100:1. In this case, the reduction in image quality can vary from insignificant to significant.

Description

Tiff is a widely used file format for storing high quality color images with high color depth (including graphics and photos) on a wide variety of computer platforms. Able to save images in grayscale. Created by specialists from Aidus, which later became part of Adobe Systems. Used to scan and recognize text files. The extension correctly interacts with most applications that provide work with graphics. Tiff files are the main format of the NeXSTEP OS, from which bitmaps of this extension were borrowed into Mac OS.

Technical details

Tiff files can be saved in Intel or Motorola formats, which are defined by the first word - II and MM, respectively. This is due to the peculiarities of these processors: Intel reads and writes numbers from right to left, Motorola in reverse order. The format is cross-platform and does not require specialized software to open. They are correctly displayed by popular graphics editors like Adobe Photoshop or CorelDRAW Graphics. A Tiff file can be presented as tags containing information about the image, or as a single file made using the LZW compression algorithm. Each Tiff named data area begins with an image header pointing to the image file in the directory that contains the represented images and information about them.

In addition to the usual graphic file formats (jpg, png, bmp, etc.), which usually contain one page of an graphic file, there are also graphic file formats that support multi-page images. One of them is the tiff format ( TaggedImagefileformat). Exists as a three-letter extension of this file format tif, and four-letter tiff. In fact, this is the same file format, which, being four-letter in the original, became three-letter because early versions of Windows had a mandatory requirement that all file extensions of this operating system be three-character.

At work, sometimes I need to collect several graphic files into one file, for example, when I scan several pages of one common document (protocols, acts, etc.). In this case, these scanned pages must be combined into one multi-page graphic file, in order to then send this file to all protocol participants for review and work. And sending them many files of individual protocol pages is not the best solution.

It is also sometimes necessary to scan several pages of a book, or a small brochure, and then consolidate all these individual page files into one file on a computer. To solve such problems, I usually use a small, but very powerful and convenient program. irfanView. I have already briefly described its capabilities in the article.

Download and install IrfanView

IrfanView is a free graphics program, small in size but very powerful. Considering that at the same time it also supports the Russian language, it has become one of the most necessary for me on a computer for viewing and editing photos. In fact, in symbiosis with the built-in Windows Paint, this is a small analogue of Photoshop.

You can download IrfanView from the official website of this program, or you can download version 4.38 via a direct link:

If you chose the first method, then on the official website click on the link shown in the screenshot below (the site is in English, so I showed below how to download the latest version of the program):

You are taken to the download page of the program, where you need to click the big green button "Download Now" ("Download Now").

After downloading, install the program (just click "Next", or "Next" on the program installation suggestions). The program icon resembles a red sprawling cat:

Russification of the IrfanView program

The Russian language for the program interface can be downloaded from the same site, in the left menu "IrfanView languages"

Then we find the Russian language in the list and download the Installer:

Then install the downloaded file, and IrfanView becomes a program in Russian, as shown below.

If for some reason the program did not switch to Russian automatically, then go to the "Options" menu, then "Change language", and then select the Russian language, and click "OK":

Creating a multi-page tif file

So, the program is installed, Russified, and now you can go directly to creating a multi-page tif file consisting of several consecutive images.

I have seven pages of a brochure I just scanned that I need to flatten into one tif image file. So far, they are all separately and look like this:

Open IrfanView, go to the "Tools" menu item, then "Multi-page images", then "Create a multi-page TIFF file":

A new window opens in which we will create our multipage tiff from our individual files.

We press the topmost button “Add images” on the right, find and select with the mouse all the files that we need to combine (in our example, these are 7 files), while it is desirable to pre-number these files in the correct sequence so that they go in the correct multipage file in the created multipage file okay. After adding these files, they look like this:

Next, through the "Browse" button, specify the folder to save the created file, and below we can immediately set the name of the resulting file (just do not change the tif extension). You can also use the ability to sort the source files, but if you initially numbered them correctly, then this is not necessary.

After all the preparations, click on the button "Create TIF file" from the bottom left:

As a result, you have a multi-page tif file (in our example, a seven-page Brochure.tif file was created).

We open the received file “Brochure.tif”, and we see that it has exactly 7 pages. You can flip through the pages of a multi-page file either using the buttons indicated in the screenshot below, or by using the key combinations "Ctrl" + "Page Down" (next page), or "Ctrl" + "Page Up" (previous page).

So, today we downloaded and installed the wonderful program IrfanView, Russified it, and also learned how to create multi-page tiff files. If you have additional questions, please ask them in the comments.

About the program Advanced TIFF Editor.

I am a researcher. Working with literature is an integral part of the activity, including scanning, cleaning and recognition of texts in Cyrillic and Latin. I used to use MS Office 2003 which includes 2 good programs: Document Scanning and Document Imaging . In subsequent MS Office packages, they are not, and the analogues included in the packages are sharpened in photos and pictures, which did not suit me at all. There is a good program Abbyy FineReader, where there are such functions. But it costs ... weighty. In addition, it is highly sophisticated, and paying thousands out of your own pocket, then using 20% of the program's capabilities is somehow not comme il faut. After spending several days searching the Internet for suitable programs, I found out: there are many programs, free, shareware and paid. I checked about two dozen "free-free" ones and stopped: for free and almost-free, the quality is appropriate. Typical examples: scanning only the entire text, without the possibility of adjusting contrast, brightness, or selection of an area; most don't have an Image Cleanup option; only a few have the Text Recognition feature; there is no possibility to scan multi-page documents. Surprisingly, many paid programs (demo versions) have the same inconvenience. (For obvious reasons, I do not consider programs like Paint and the giant Photoshop). 3 programs met my requirements, including - Advanced TIFF Editor, all paid. After spending several hours, I rejected 2 of them: it is overly fancy and costs like FineReader , the other for some reason saves recognized text only in PDF document format, which does not suit me (there is no saving to WORD). I don’t give names, if you want to find it in stores, set the position at the price "> 5000 rubles".

The Advanced TIFF Editor program (I have version 3.9.4.20) fully meets the requirements of "scan, clean, recognize text in Cyrillic and Latin". Takes up little space, installs quickly, works well, costs quite a budget. A nice option: installed 2 Trial versions (at home, at work), bought a key, activated the computer at work. If you need to work at home, deactivate the computer at work, activate it at home. Those. works like a real wearable key. A convenient option is to save the settings to a file that can always be run on another computer. It is probably possible to make several of these files and run them depending on the kind of work (but I have not tried). From the wishes - the ability to recognize mixed text (Russian + English), but I saw this function only in FineReader. But in general - this is the best program in this class.

There are many programs that work with pdf, but I like things in your program that I have not found anywhere else. Or at least in other programs it is inconvenient.

1) Text (vector graphics) in multi-page pdf documents, created for example in Word, is easily converted into an image.

2) Converting the bitness of multi-page pdf "Color - gray - black and white" (different processing methods);

3) Changing the "brightness - contrast" parameters in multipage pdf documents.

4) Convenient ability to drag and drop pages within a document.

5) I am used to the program, all its tools are convenient for me.

The program is indispensable for me as a lawyer - business executive, arbitration manager. I use it to make my archives. This saves me from having to carry bags of papers with me on business trips.

Vladimir F.

Thanks for the program. I have been looking for a similar one for processing PDF format for a long time and found it on the internet. I worked with the demo version and was satisfied.
The program is very easy to use, much more convenient than Adobe Acrobat, because it uses many formats and has easy access to processing.

Konstantin R.

This program is needed for work, because on some government portals you need to upload documents not in PDF, but in TIFF-multipage format!

Golubev P.S. [CJSC "Gazprombank-Asset Management"]

We are already buying our third license. If you do not take the expensive Adobe Acrobat, then there are practically no functional alternatives.

Egorov A. M.

The standard for acceptance by the Federal Tax Inspectorate of electronic containers with documentation provides for the presence of scanned images of documents in the standard multi-page TIFF file, and this program is the best suited for the formation of such containers. The continue scanning function is very convenient when working with multipage documents.

Hello, friends! In this article, we will get acquainted with the TIFF format. I will briefly tell you what kind of format it is, how to open tiff files and how to work with them. TIFF format(Tagged Image File Format) — format for bitmap images. A feature (at least for me) is that several images can be stored in one TIFF file. When viewing, you open one file and scroll through the pages (images / pictures) inside it. Personally, I have not used it yet, but at work I once encountered this format. 3 images were sent in one TIFF file. It turned out to be very convenient. Nothing will be lost and you need to send not 3 but 1 file. It's like files in an archive, but you don't need to extract them to view them.

The simplest solution is

Below, just above the control buttons, there are buttons for changing pages (images). You can conveniently open and view a TIFF file.

The rights to the TIFF format belong to Adobe, so most of the products of this giant open the TIFF format.

You can also open TIF files using freely distributed programs:

  1. FastStone Image Viewer
  2. IrfanView
  3. XnView

We will dwell on the latter in more detail, since we will use it in our work.

You can and should download from the official website http://www.xnview.com/en/xnview/#downloads

Go to the unpacked folder and run XnView.exe

In the security warning window, click "Run"

Closing Tip of the Day

Go to the menu "File > Open ..." and select the TIFF file.

If the file is multi-page, then an information window will appear with a hint on how to scroll through these same pages.

An open TIFF file in XnView looks like this. You can scroll through the pages using the Page UP and Page Down keys on the keyboard or the buttons in the toolbar shown in the figure below

In the window that opens, select the location of the file and set the name. Select TIF in the "File type" field and click "Save"

If you click the "Options" button, various compression options will be available. As I understand LZW - lossless compression. I don’t know who might need it during high-speed Internet and 64 GB flash drives.

When saving a JPG file in TIFF format, the size increased from 80 KB to 1 MB. More than an order of magnitude. When compressing a 10 MB multi-page TIFF file, the size was reduced by approximately 10%.

Creating a multi-page TIFF file?

We start XnView. Go to "Tools > Create Multipage File..."

In the window that opens, select the format: "TIFF Revision 6". Set the filename and location folder. Click "Add..." at the top.

Press the CTRL key to select files and click OK.

Files added. You can use the arrows to change their location in the TIFF file. The "Options" button opens a familiar window where you can select compression if necessary. Click "Create"

The file is created instantly.

In XnView, you can edit tiff file. Select the appropriate option in the menu "Tools > Multipage File"

In the window that opens, immediately check the box "High-quality thumbnail" for a more sane display of these thumbnails

Click "Add Image" and insert the desired image into the desired page of the TIFF file

Images can be swapped and deleted. When the changes are made, click "Apply" and save the updated multi-page file to the desired location.

Multipage TIFF development?

You have a multi-page TIFF file and need to split it into separate image files. Open it in XnView and follow the path

"Tools > Multipage File > Extract All to Folder..."

Select the folder and format of the files to be extracted. Click "OK"

After a couple of seconds, the files will be extracted to the specified folder

If you do not need to save all the files separately on the disk, you can select "Extract All"

In a popular format JPEG a lossy data compression algorithm is applied. The JPEG compression mechanism is used in a variety of file formats for storing image data. JPEG/Exif has become the most common format adopted by digital cameras and other photography devices. Files of this format are the most common way to store and share image data on the Internet.

TIFF- a format for storing image files that have become widespread among graphic artists, in the publishing industry. It has also gained popularity among amateur and professional photographers.
