Motorola Moto M - Review of a quality smartphone with a reasonable price.

Its engineers managed to create two absolutely different smartphones which despite significant difference in price, are equally awarded the highest praise. It would seem that all that the company needs is to continue in the same spirit, trying to open up new markets for itself and soon conquering them. But, as you know, in this life, not everything obeys the laws of logic. That night, while the majority of decent citizens were watching another dream, representatives of the search giant google announced the sale Motorola companies Lenovo. What are the benefits of selling and buying? Let's figure it out.

A bit of history

First of all, it is worth noting that happy times Motorola has already covered itself with a thick layer of dust. The company's success remained back in 2005, when almost everyone was trying to get their hands on the incredibly slim and stylish RAZR V3. Soon there was a lull, and only loyal fans remembered about the new smartphones, which, by the way, received good support.

Disappointment

The reason for changing this state of affairs was her purchase the google team in the spring of 2012. It was clear to the vast majority of analysts that main goal acquisition has become the acquisition of a number of important patents. However, many did not lose hope. Since Google is taking the company under its wing, it can't just take advantage of its capabilities, can it? It turns out that it can.
The Motorola purchase cost $ 12.5 billion. As it turned out, the patents acquired for such fabulous money were grossly overvalued. They did not do much good either in the fight against Microsoft or in attempts to ban local iPhone sales... Plus, smartphones were making a meager profit. It became obvious that Motorola is just a headache for Google.

Prerequisites

The intentions to get rid of the creator of Moto X became clear a long time ago. In April 2013, Motorola Home was sold to Arris for $ 2.35 billion.
In addition, many analysts associate Andy Rubin's translation with the difference between his views and the company's vision. The former head of Android reportedly advocated Motorola's integration with Google. Yes, that would mean less collaboration with companies like HTC, LG and Samsung. By the way, about the latter.

South Korean factor

Just a few days ago that Google and Samsung were able to strike a deal, under the terms of which the companies are committed to exchange patents. Naturally, it would be naive to believe that cooperation will be limited only to the exchange of important documents.

According to some experts, the deal with Samsung is much more important. For example, it is reported that Samsung has gone to change graphical shell Magazine UI and the use of apps as Google created them, precisely because of the agreement. What's on the second side of the scale? Maybe something related to Motorola?

Benefits

As far as Google is concerned, the situation is clear here. The company keeps patents for itself, and it gets rid of the creator of smartphones.
For Lenovo, this step is much more important. It's no secret that the Chinese manufacturer has been looking for ways to enter the American market for a long time. This became clear back in November 2013, when the Canadian government banned her from buying BlackBerry.
Now there are no obstacles for this. Lenovo gains access not only to the US consumer electronics market itself, but also to cooperation with mobile operators, which hitherto the company's management could only dream of.

Outcome

On the this moment it is not known whether the Motorola brand will become part of history, or if Lenovo will continue to release smartphones under this name. Most likely, there is no point in changing the name for the American market.

The deal price between Google and Lenovo, by the way, is $ 2.91 billion. 660 million of them will be given in cash, 750 - in shares, while the remaining 1.5 billion will be paid within three years.

The main and most painful of all the reforms of the Chinese leadership is the "dissolution" of the American division within Lenovo. Motorola ceases to be an independent smartphone manufacturer and turns into a mid-range and premium smartphone manufacturer Lenovo.

Outrageous? And how! Replicas are already circulating on the Web with varying degrees of indignation, starting with accusations of Lenovo for "enslaving and killing" the legend and continuing with jokes: "I will sell smartphone manufacturer Rola, inexpensively." But there is still logic in the actions of the Chinese.

Let's start with the traditional get it first. Motorola has been unprofitable for a very long time - for eight years in a row, for sure. And this is a signal that something needs to be changed at the conservatory. Lenovo reasoned that living on "separate reservations" while doing the same thing in the US and Beijing would be both costly and illogical.

Of course, future smartphones called “ Lenovo Moto"Will hurt the eyes of fans of the brand. But in the same way everyone in the old years was outraged by Lenovo ThinkPad, and even earlier - by Sony-Ericsson, Fujitsu-Siemens, BenQ-Siemens. And nothing - got used to it. The main thing is that smartphones are of high quality and with a twist.

The company's lineup stretched into four positions: waterproof budget Moto G, middle class in the face of Moto X Play, sub-flagship of the Moto X Style and the very most Moto X Force with the coolest characteristics and a shatterproof screen. In the global market, smartphones are no longer new, but the company will present something fresh at the end of February.

First impressions of smartphones

The leaders of the corporation promise close cooperation between American and Chinese engineers in the future, but the new items presented in Russia have nothing to do with modern Lenovo smartphones. And that's good because under the wing Chinese company several very different "currents" have already accumulated. Read at least one more "daughter" Lenovo - ZUK.

The hardest thing will be the budget Moto G - in our difficult time, when you have to get out and buy chinese smartphones, looking only at the characteristics, for his 17 thousand he will surprise little in the "iron" plan. But he, like everyone else Moto smartphones, conscientiously assembled, handsome and reliable.

Shattersheild indestructible display design

However, Lenovo did not promise to knock the buyer off his feet with exorbitant characteristics for the spent ruble. Feature Moto - lightweight "factory" Android no frills. Only small, convenient touches have been added to it: you just need to shake the smartphone to activate the flashlight from the flash, and in X Style and older models, smartphone gesture control is supported above screen. Can be switched music tracks, find out the time and check notifications even with palms in solid oil and a mixer to intercept, or with a piece of grilled chicken in your hands. All smartphones except Moto G have fast charging and the power consumption itself, according to company representatives, is quite moderate in Moto.

In Moto X Force main feature- shockproof screen, even excessive in its indestructibility for household use... The design allows you to repair a 5.4-inch screen "with little blood", simply replacing the "glass", and not the whole "sandwich" with the matrix.

But keep in mind that with all the safety margin, X Force has exactly the same "civil" manufacturer's warranty and does not pass in quality according to any documents shockproof smartphone... If you manage to "kill" the speaker, motherboard or a camera, no one will fix such mutilations of a smartphone for free.

Plans for tomorrow

Lenovo reps talk about merger branded casings Lenovo (VIBE UI) and Motorola software developments. MotoBlur unlikely to be unearthed, but the Chinese have assured reporters that Lenovo will not “rewrite the history of Moto from scratch”. Promise to please lovers too pure android, and fans of Chinese colorful functional add-ons.

In America, Moto attracts buyers with the Moto Maker tool, in which you can assemble a smartphone for yourself: choose the colors of panels and edging, body materials, memory capacity, a cover, and even order an engraving. In Russia, all this will not happen, because transferring the entire zoo of opportunities to Russian market will be troublesome and expensive, which means an increase in the final price. Lenovo promised to find out what the Russians like the most in terms of embellishments, and to introduce the most coveted "tricks". In the meantime - smartphones in white and black cases with two replaceable colorful back covers.

Despite the fact that some google time brandished Motorola patents in front of Microsoft, Moto good- sales of Lenovo computers with Windows in a set affect. Regarding Motorola smartphones on Windows, the company's representatives are silent, but they promise steps to meet Microsoft in the near future.

Moto smartphones will not compete with the VIBE line, because Lenovo will always create simpler mobile phones, and Moto will be given “chic” at the mercy.

Moto smartwatches will come to our country later: Lenovo is skeptical about such gadgets and ponders whether Russians need such unpopular and expensive "toys" now. But there will be no Moto tablets at all. The Chinese urge: "Buy Lenovo tablets- we already produce them for every taste ”.

What Motorola means to us

In ancient times

If we turn the common saying inside out, we can say that everything well-forgotten old turns into new. Today, completely different manufacturers are heard, in addition, the army of mobile phone users has already replenished with those who did not see the peak of Moto popularity in Russia or remained an adherent of another brand, being unaware of what the "American manufacturer of walkie-talkies" is still doing.

We will not take away the bread from Wikipedia, so today we will do without savoring the company's prehistoric inventions. Just know that Motorola started out with batteries and car radios (hence the "motor" in the name), then took off at the expense of quality radios for warriors during WWII, and in the post-war period turned its attention to cellular communications. In the years when mobile units Samsung and Apple were not yet in the project, Motorola released the first cell phone, and later - the world's first clamshell. In general, with many clown brands of the modern era, which progress only in processor cores and megapixels, the legendary "motor" has little in common.

For several decades, Moto was snapped up in its home market - in the United States, building towers and producing mobile phones. As a phone manufacturer, the company entered Russia at a time when Russians were “new” and jackets were “crimson”.

In the XXI century

When the era cellular"For the elite" in Russia is over, mobile phones have finally become widespread. We have known Motorola since such times.

Motorola T190 became one of the first models that really "went public" - in 2001-2002 it was sold out to its fullest for its modern dimensions and filling at an adequate price. That is, in terms of its positioning, the brand was for buyers an analogue of modern "correct" Chinese manufacturers... For connoisseurs of premium, models were released even more abruptly, but only those phones that were promoted by operators became popular.

Motorola T190 is an honored hero in the distribution of mobile communications in Russia

Then began the era of polyphony, the first color displays and the fiercest competition between a few phone manufacturers. At that time, the word "mobile" sounded cool regardless of the model, but each of the brands already had their own face.

Nokia immediately got an image like that of Apple iPhone- thoroughly, prestigious, expensive. Innovative models cost a pretty penny, while mass models were seriously inferior in bells and whistles to competitors. And the approach “why do you need so many settings? What, you have nothing to do, except to alter the phone for yourself? " was also painfully similar to the modern songs of the Cupertinians.

Ericsson, before the Japanese bought it from Sony, was a semblance of the current BlackBerry - serious uncles bought functional, but not the most modern business mobile phones, and if it were not for the guys from the Land of the Rising Sun, the Swedes would have gone to the bottom in exactly the same way as they do today makes "blackberry".

Great and harsh budget C-series. From indestructible long-lived phones to multimedia with cameras and internet, cheap

Siemens was like a modern ASUS products- smartphones, in which everything was inexpensive, with very sophisticated firmware, which sometimes lived its own life. Opinions about the brand in the same way differed from “but for that kind of money it’s better not to find it!” to "God, why didn't I overpay for Nokia and bought this buggy scrap metal?"

And Motorola? If HTC and Lenovo had a daughter, this is exactly what she would look like. Very strong budget models C-series, sometimes with structural and stitching mistakes, like the "Chinese", scandalously beautiful image representatives (the V70 rotator alone made a splash, and the RAZR V3 "clamshell" became a sex symbol among mobile phones) in the best Taiwanese traditions and great amount experimental models unlike anything like these two brands combined.

And, like the same HTC, Motorola became a hostage of the super-successful metal phones, missed the smartphone market (MPX 200 and 220 were few, but Symbian and Windows Mobile ruled the market) and ran into untimely experiments with some of its variations of Linux (hello, Microsoft-Nokia). making or decrypting human DNA is another matter. Therefore, the search engine tried not to get involved in the internal affairs of Motorola: the engineers were given funding for the release of new models, mobile phones received newest version Android and were updated in a timely manner (their own shirt is closer to the body). In 2013, the company rolled out a very successful budget employee Moto G and presented a "tuning studio Moto Maker", in which it was possible to order a smartphone with a unique design for a modest amount. Finally, Motorola smartphones formed into a single line, and the heaped up Nexus 6 became the crown of life under the wing of Google - perhaps the only smartphone in the development of which the search giant was actively involved.

But Motorola did not show explosive growth under the wing of Google, and the manufacturers of android phones began to look askance at Google, wait for it to start “pushing” smartphones of its own design into the market and turn into the only manufacturer of mobile phones with a “green robot”, like Apple from your iOS.

Google quickly got tired of such gossip and excitement, and instead of "dragging" Motorola up by the ears, it poured patents from its subsidiary company and put it up for sale. Overseas helped: Lenovo, which took over the computer business of IBM in the same way a few years ago, bought out the famous smartphone manufacturer and is now making its newest history.

Motorola Moto M Phone - Reviews

Moto Z - flagship Moto G4, Moto G4 Play and Moto G4 Plus - budget options; Moto M is somewhere in between. Like other mid-range Android smartphones, the Moto M is different good characteristics, great design and affordable price. We ran a test to find out more about it.

Externally Motorola moto M does not stand out from other smartphones. The build quality is good, it is pleasant to hold in the hand. The body is made of metal, slightly larger than the Moto Z Play Droid, but looks more stylish thanks to its minimalist and streamlined design.

The Lenovo Moto M is relatively compact for the 5.5-inch model - no bigger than the G4 Moto or OnePlus 3 / 3T. At 7.85mm thick, it's not ultra-thin, but it still fits comfortably in the hand. Its weight is 163 grams, i.e. lighter than the average 5.5-inch smartphone.

There are no navigation buttons on the front panel, only the Moto logo is at the bottom. On the back, instead of the brand, there is a circular fingerprint scanner. The minimalism of the Motorola Moto M is appropriate and looks good.

The phone is resistant to small splashes, but is unlikely to withstand immersion in water.

At the bottom there is a USB Type-C connector, microphone and speaker. There is also a 3.5 mm audio jack, but it is located at the top of the smartphone.

The volume control and power button are responsive and clicky. The button is covered with a textured pattern.

The 5.5-inch IPS LCD has a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The image could have been sharper, but this should be enough for most users.

The color temperature is 8452 K, which is higher than the standard 6500 K, which means that all colors are shifted to the "cold" side of the spectrum, and White color gives off blue. This problem often occurs on budget devices.

There are two display modes, Normal and Vivid. Even in Normal, green, yellow, and red become oversaturated. When switched to Vivid mode, all colors will be too bright and inaccurate.

The gamma and contrast of the display are fine. The brightness of the screen is adjustable for comfortable viewing both on a clear day and on a dark night.

Interface and functionality

Lenovo Moto M works on Android base Marshmallow. The interface is almost the same as on Google nexus... Majority preinstalled apps- standard for Google.

Added a little custom applications from Moto such as File manager and Device Help. The latter is system monitor with which you can learn about all the functions.

The interface is fast and responsive, but a little dated. The last Android version- Nougat, to which for now operating system Moto M is not updated.

The fingerprint scanner on the back is fast and error-free, but it lacks other features.

Processor and memory

8-core MediaTek processor Helio P15, clocked at 2.2GHz and 4GB random access memory provide the speed of Motorola Moto M. Some models are equipped with a less powerful 8-core MediaTek Helio P10 with a frequency of 2 GHz.

In everything except simple tasks, Moto M demonstrates modest performance; under load, the case heats up noticeably. Frame rates fluctuate in graphics-intensive games.

Standard Lenovo version The Moto M comes with 32GB of internal storage, but 64GB can also be ordered. There is a slot for microSD memory cards.

Communication and connections

Moto M allows you to connect to the 4G LTE network: FDD (band 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20) and LTE (band 38, 40, 41). There are 2 SIM card slots, but MicroSD takes up one of them. Supported: Bluetooth 4.1; dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a, b, g, n, ac; GPS; A-GPS; GLONASS; BeiDou.

To charge and pair with a computer, you need USB cable Type-C.

The 16MP sensor on the back of the Moto M matches the smartphone's price range. The camera app is not standard from Google, but with a Moto interface. The controls are intuitive. There are such functions as manual control, filters for Instagram and several specific shooting modes. HDR is supported, but you need to manually turn it on and off.

The image quality when shooting is average. If you hold your smartphone steadily and the lighting is good, the pictures will come out with a decent amount of detail. Otherwise, small details will turn out to be fuzzy, vague, or completely absent. Sometimes in the photo there are problems with highlights and shadows.

Colors are close to real life, without excessive saturation or increased sharpness. The white balance of the Lenovo Moto M is fine, autofocus is fast.

8-megapixel front-camera the Motorola Moto M is pretty good too. I would like better image quality, but it will do for selfies. There is an "Ultra HD" mode, which in theory should take pictures in more detail, but I did not notice any improvement. In Panorama mode, the image is "stitched" correctly, but not detailed enough.

Full HD (1080p) video is shot at 30 frames per second, while the quality is acceptable. The camera focuses and adjusts exposure relatively quickly. Due to the lack of image stabilization, the video can be jerky if you hold the camera unstable.

Multimedia

The Moto M has a single underneath speaker that is loud enough for clear, deep sound. Thanks to the 3.5mm audio jack on the top of the smartphone, you can plug in regular headphones.

There is even an FM radio, which is usually missing on modern gadgets.

Call quality

Call quality is fine. The sound during calls is not the best, but acceptable for both the Moto M owner and the interlocutor.

Battery in Motorola Moto M

The 3,050mAh battery easily lasts an entire day if you use the phone sparingly. With more heavy load it will discharge faster.

V standard test batteries with special script which emulated the real everyday use with a brightness of 200 nits, Lenovo smartphone The Moto M lasted 7 hours and 8 minutes - an excellent result. But it can be better.

Outcome

With all that said, Motorola Moto M - good smartphone with good build quality and design, durable battery, intuitive and simple interface... Of the shortcomings, it can be noted low productivity, inaccurate display colors and camera problems.

Moto M costs a little more than competitors: the basic version with 32 GB costs from $ 239 (14,000 rubles), and with 64 GB - about $ 268 (15,600 rubles). Is it still reasonable prices, but some smartphones are cheaper, and the quality is not worse.

For example, the Moto G4 for $ 199.99 (11,500 rubles) - about the same performance and features, but without a fingerprint scanner. Or Honor 6X for $ 249 (14,500 rubles) with a fingerprint scanner, dual camera and more high performance... Both are superior in value for money to the Lenovo Moto M.

Advantages

  • Stylish design and good quality assemblies
  • Android interface without unnecessary changes
  • 32 GB memory standard
  • Decent speaker
  • Good battery life

Flaws

  • Mediocre performance
  • Display problems
  • Image quality could be better

V Lately many device manufacturers are increasingly thinking about "conquering" budget market smartphones and produce inexpensive phone models with the expectation of "their" buyer and the hope of colossal demand and huge sales. But the more actively market players fill the vacant niche, the more serious the competition becomes. Consequently, even an inexperienced user must now be "lured" with a variety of chips. Lenovo is no exception and this summer brought out the most affordable (at the moment) models of its phones. Let's take a closer look at them. Meet Moto C and Moto C Plus.

Design and equipment

Ruler Lenovo C-smartphones offers not very extensive, but still a choice of colors. The more advanced model is available in gold, red and black, the Moto C is available in black, red, white and gold. For the tests we got the gold and red phone models. But first things first.

Traditionally smartphones are shipped in cardboard boxes... This time, the company preferred blue packages. The complete set is standard. Along with the phones, buyers get: cable, charger and headphones. The latter, albeit simple, but, firstly, are still available (some manufacturers have long refused to supply this gadget), and, secondly, they showed themselves well in test operation.

Externally, smartphones are similar to their "brothers" from the previous line: the same rounded edges, smooth lines and shapes. Nothing extra. The only "outstanding" element, a kind of designer find, was a round black insert in the area of the main camera and flash, which are located, of course, on the rear panel. In the same place, just a little lower - " business card"Brand - the logo in the form of the letter" M ". At the very bottom is the main speaker. Its location, in our opinion, is not entirely successful: leaving the smartphone on a table or other surface with the screen facing up, you should take into account that the sound will be muffled. By the way, the back panels in both models are a bit rough and removable: the devices will not fly out of your hands and you can always see what is going on inside.

We turn the phones "face" up. At the bottom there are three touch buttons responsible for navigation. Top: front camera, flash and speaker- everything is standard. The body is made of plastic, but the view is quite presentable. The details fit together clearly and tightly, we did not observe any gaps and creaks - the assembly is good, which pleases.

In terms of dimensions, smartphones do not differ significantly from each other, the difference in weight is also insignificant - about 10 grams: Moto C weighs 154 grams, and C Plus - 162 grams.

Simple and affordable options

O external parameters talked, let's get down to the "internal".

Cameras... The Moto C has a 5 megapixel main camera and a 2 megapixel front camera. Both are equipped with flashes. Moto C Plus has an improved main camera - 8 megapixels. The front parameters remained the same as those of the "brother". During the day, the photos are good, but with the onset of dusk, with insufficient illumination, their quality deteriorates sharply. Also, don't expect the selfie camera in these phones to be great. But, if you choose the angle successfully, “catch” the light, “tweak” the settings and effects that are available in the devices, the output will be quite worthy photos as a keepsake.

by the way about memory... Smartphones are endowed with 1 GB of RAM. This volume is enough for storing the most necessary data, installing programs and applications. The built-in memory is 16 GB. If desired, it can be "expanded": in the Moto C up to 32 GB, in the C Plus up to 128 GB.

Screen... Both phone models have a 5-inch diagonal, but the resolution is different. The Moto C has 480x854 pixels, while the plus model has higher performance - 720x1280. The color rendition is good: bright and saturated colors do not fade even in the sun. The viewing angle in the C Plus is slightly better. Smartphones stably and clearly "react" to touch, we did not reveal any "braking".

It is worth "thanks" for the smart and smooth work CPU... It is quad-core in smartphones, based on the MediaTek platform. The Moto C is clocked at 1.1 GHz, while the Moto C Plus is clocked at 1.3 GHz.

Interface... Smartphones of this line have two desktops with application icons and a separate field for searching in Google. "Get" to additional icons by pulling up the arrow located at the bottom of the screen. There is also a familiar "curtain" - at the top, behind which notifications are hidden.

Fortunately for the owners, Moto does not change its traditions. These budget models are also equipped with pure Android without unnecessary preinstalled programs... By the way, operating system installed by one of latest versions- 7.0. For "affordable" devices - an advanced solution.

Manufacturers have prepared another "gift" by providing phones with excellent capacity... In the younger model, the battery will be 2350 mAh, and in the older model - 4000 mAh. On the plus side, such a “reserve” is enough for almost two days of active work, the Moto C's autonomy is also good - more than a day. Remarkable performance for inexpensive models.

And in conclusion: slots for two SIM-cards and a memory card are separate. A trifle, but nice.

From all of the above, we can conclude: both phones have even average characteristics, but stable indicators.

Conclusion

New smartphones from Lenovo Moto C and Moto C Plus do not differ in advanced software bells and whistles, they cannot boast of serious "bells and whistles", but we, after all, did not count on supernatural capabilities for little money. In their price segment, they can withstand competition and even give a head start in some indicators, for example, autonomous work and the operating system.

Both models are perfect for those who just decided to get a smartphone. Do you want to "transfer" your parents from push-button telephone or buy a child's first advanced device? Moto C or Moto C Plus - great choice... We do not insist, but only share our opinion. It is up to you to choose and decide.
