Mobile phone with 2 screens. The best phone with two screens: why so many displays

Modern manufacturers mobile technology all the time they want to surprise their users with something and add some bright and distinctive detail to new model. Someone experiments with megapixels of the camera, someone equips the gadget with a super-powerful battery, and someone decides to add an additional screen. Today, a smartphone with two screens is not such a frequent occurrence, few companies take on bold experiments and implement this idea in completely different ways.

We can all remember the old clamshells that had a simple color screen inside and a monochrome one to display the time on the outside. So, we do not take such devices into account, but we will focus on modern attempts to create a smartphone with two screens.

Since the way the second screen is implemented differs from manufacturer to manufacturer, it is impossible to give a clear answer to the question of why it is needed: some use it to display the main information and save energy, others - to control the smartphone itself, others - in general, simply surprise by the very presence of a second screen, without endowing it with special functionality. However, many users look towards such gadgets, and their presence in their hands distinguishes them from the crowd, so they are still in demand, even despite not the most low price they enjoy.

So, let's start the review of the most interesting models with two screens, the first of which began to appear long before the famous YotaPhone.

Smartphone with two screens from Fujitsu

Fujitsu was one of the first in the world to start such developments, which already in 2010 presented a prototype of a smartphone with two screens, however, it never went on sale: apparently, it was ahead of its time.

It looks like an ordinary clamshell, only very large, but when you open it, it turns out that the screen is located not only in the usual place, but also in place of the keyboard. The resolution of both displays was 960 * 480 pixels - not bad for that time. The lower part was touch-sensitive, so it could be used as a keyboard to control a smartphone. The top display, by the way, also supported touch control, so it was possible, for example, to drag an image from one screen to another when they are located vertically. The configuration of the smartphone allowed the screens to be rotated so that they were in a horizontal position and created single space for browsing the web, for example, etc.

Solution from Ava

Another progressive solution from 2010, when two full-fledged screens fit into a device case 7 mm thick in a very unusual configuration. In appearance, it was a miniature smartphone with an excellent color touch screen, and with the help of roller mechanisms, if necessary, an additional thin flexible display left. In this case touch smartphone turned into a full QWERTY keyboard, and the whole device into a miniature laptop.

The author of the idea was Donny Mamanov, but then everything remained at the level of prototypes, since it was not in demand. Now, with the growing popularity of smartphones with two screens, such a development has a future.

YotaPhone and YotaPhone 2

Interesting devices from Russian manufacturer became, probably, one of the first with two screens, which are produced for sale and fully function. The first model was released in 2013, and based on user criticism and some comments, the second model was released already in 2014: it has become more thoughtful and balanced.

YotaPhone is often called world's first dual screen smartphone: although there were other developments before, this is the first gadget that went into mass production. And it surprises not only with its two screens, but also with a good technical filling: a 2-core processor, a 13-megapixel camera, 2 GB of RAM, stylish design. Naturally, the main feature is the presence of a second screen made using E-Ink technology. He received the same diagonal as the main one - 4.3 inches, and is located on reverse side smartphone.

The black-and-white screen is easy to read, as it does not tire the eyes, it consumes almost no energy, so it works in the smartphone all the time. An additional display serves here to display information about the time and events from selected applications: the list of notifications can be configured as you wish, including privacy settings: for example, displaying only information about SMS, but not its text. In addition, here you can set wallpapers, when you create a photo, a funny inscription appears, and developers can write some of their own applications to interact with the second screen. Its resolution is small - 360*460, but this is normal for E-Ink. The only negative is that the display is not touch-sensitive, and you need to remember a few gestures to control it. But it is possible to instantly transfer information from the main screen to the second one, and use this function, for example, when the phone is running low, and an electronic ticket is stored in it, etc.

But the first YotaPhone was not without many shortcomings: users complained about the strange location of the camera lens at the bottom, about the poorly thought-out control of the main and second displays, about not the most productive stuffing, and the low resolution of the main display. After the manufacturer was convinced that such devices are in demand, he released an updated device that is hard to find fault with.

YotaPhone 2, released at the end of last year, received the latest operating system, a new 2-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory, improved cameras, a 5-inch color display with a resolution of 1080 * 1920 pixels and a protective glass, a battery for 2500 mAh, wireless charging. The second display with a diagonal of 4.6 inches received a resolution of 540 * 960 pixels, 16 shades of gray. The E-Ink display is beyond praise here: it has become touch-sensitive and can display all the same information as the main smartphone: watching movies, navigating, surfing the Internet, etc. Everything is fast, clear and of high quality, and if you save battery power, you can safely switch to using the second screen.

In terms of design, the second YotaPhone turned out to be much better: it is stylish, thin, unlike the first one, with a rounded rear panel. The volume rocker is combined with a slot for SIM-cards, the duration of work is high, the photos are excellent. All this with a thickness of 8.45 mm and a weight of 145 g.

Another gadget of domestic production, which received two displays. The novelty was presented at the end of last year. The second screen here is also located on the reverse side, it is small and serves to display the time, information about incoming calls, messages, notifications of custom applications. The second screen serves more as an auxiliary display and is an analogue of those small screens that were found in the old "clamshells".

In terms of other characteristics, we have a standard modern smartphone: an 8-core processor, a 4.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 * 720 pixels, 2 GB of RAM, 13 and 2 MP cameras, support for two SIM cards, fresh Android, nice design and light weight (135 g). True, due to its interesting feature, it turned out to be a little more expensive than smartphones of the same company with similar parameters.

The Chinese manufacturer decided to surprise users with a model where both screens are color and have an excellent resolution of 1080p. The news also became known at the end of last year.

So the smartphone is made in the form of a "clamshell", on the inside and outside of which there are equivalent 4-inch screens with a resolution of 1080 * 1920 pixels, which means that the pixel density is a stunning 550 per inch. Among other characteristics: a 4-core processor with a frequency of 1.5 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 16 and 5 megapixel cameras, a fresh operating system, a 2050 mAh battery. The weight of the device is 172 grams, and the details of the price, release dates and work with two screens are not yet available.

In conclusion

Today, manufacturers are increasingly daring to experiment with screens. So, we did not get into our review, for example, Galaxy Note edge, in which the main screen forms an additional one, slightly bent from it. Also on sale are devices with a slightly bent screen, etc. In the near future, smartphones that seem futuristic and unrealistic today will be perceived as something standard.

A dual screen smartphone is a niche device. In fact, there are only a few models on the market that can please their owner with two screens. And in some models, you may not notice the second screen at all.

Yota YotaPhone and Yota YotaPhone 2

Of course, we must start with this device, since it has practically no analogues and, no less interesting, was created in the Russian Yota device. The first generation YotaPhone was introduced in 2012. Here's what it looked like:

A couple of years later, the second generation of the smartphone was presented, which turned out to be much more interesting: there is a large main screen (5 inches versus 4.3 inches), more modern design, powerful iron, etc.

Additional screen installed on back frame. In the case of YotaPhone 2, its diagonal is 4.7 inches, resolution is 960 by 540 pixels, it displays 16 shades of gray. Why is it needed? It can be used, for example, to read books or to manage the desktop if the battery is very low. What's more, you can visit websites and even play games with this screen! True, in black and white.

Smartphones with two screens: why?

Cell phones with two screens appeared back in the nineties, and the well-known "clamshell" became the first devices of this format. With the advent of smartphones, manufacturers have focused on creating touch monoblocks and the auxiliary screens were forgotten for a while. In 2017, everything changed: five large companies- LG, HTC, Samsung, Meizu and ZTE - introduced a novelty, marking the beginning of a new trend. ZOOM looks into what dual-screen smartphones are on the market today and why they need a secondary display.

It would seem that there are not so many models with two screens, but upon closer examination, there will be more than a dozen of them. We studied all the trends and identified five main groups: smartphones with an additional touch color display, with a monochrome display, with an E-ink-based auxiliary screen, fold-in devices with two identical screens, and modern clamshells.

Clamshells

The first clamshell phone was the Motorola MicroTAC introduced in 1989, although it received a more familiar form factor only with the release in 1996 of an upgraded version of the Motorola StarTAC. And although all-in-ones completely dominate the market, clamshells are still being sold and even evolving. At first, manufacturers began to add to the back panel of phones small screens, and when the devices began to “get smarter”, equivalent touch displays appeared on both sides of the devices.

Samsung W2017

A good example of this design is the Samsung W2017. She received two 4.2-inch Full HD displays, a Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, support for wireless charging and Samsung Pay and so on. In a word, a really top clamshell. True, it was made for the Chinese market and is very expensive - about 20,000 yuan (180,000 rubles).

Foldable smartphones

Once popular in Japan, smartphones with two equivalent screens appeared quite a long time ago. First, manufacturers began to use QWERTY keyboards, then the keyboard began to slide out from the side, and then it was completely supplemented with a second display, as, for example, in the 2011 LG Dual Screen QWERTY Phone. Subsequently, the need for physical keyboard disappeared and was replaced by a second screen of identical main dimensions and a folding design, when the smartphone resembles a horizontal clamshell. The hit of MWC 2013 was the NEC Medias W smartphone, but this concept has not received wide popularity in the world. In the future, such modifications were practically not produced outside of Japan, and at the end of 2017, ZTE again decided to return to this idea by introducing the Axon M.

ZTE Axon M

The device has a modern filling, two Full HD displays with a diagonal of 5.2 "each and a wide range of usage scenarios. When folded, to save battery power, the auxiliary screen turns off and the device becomes like a regular smartphone, there is special mode, in which the control buttons are displayed on one display, and the main action on the second. And finally, desktop mode allows you to demonstrate the same picture on both screens, which is convenient for watching videos big company. In general, ZTE's interest in such a solution is quite remarkable, especially considering the fact that Samsung already has long been threatening to show his vision of the concept, in which one large display will be divided into two, developing like Axon M. First, this development was mentioned under the name Project Valley, then Galaxy X, and now it has completely disappeared from view.

Second E-ink display

The first idea to cross a smartphone and a reader was implemented in 2013 Russian company Yota Devices, which introduced its . The device differed from competitors by the presence of a second display on the rear panel, similar in size to the main one, but made according to the technology electronic ink. This allowed not only to use it as e-book, reading text with great comfort, but also continue to work even when the charge level has dropped to the minimum.

YotaPhone 2

Electronic ink has significantly more low power consumption, so you can use such a device for longer than regular smartphone. Following the first version of YotaPhone in 2014, and then the company was sold to the Chinese, who already independently presented in 2017, not yet available on the Russian market. At one time, a similar model called Zero 2 was also going to be released by Umi, but then it was rebranded to Umidigi and, apparently, the plans were abandoned.

Second monochrome display

Auxiliary touch displays have almost supplanted monochrome ones, but in certain period time, manufacturers managed to experiment with them. First such technical screens appeared in flip phones, allowing you to see information about the time, calls and messages without opening the phone, and then they were introduced into smartphones. One of the most interesting products in which such an idea is implemented was the Chinese Doogee T3 introduced in 2016.

Doogee T3

The device combines a non-standard design with genuine leather inserts, good performance for a cost of less than 10,000 rubles, and an additional screen located on the upper end of the case. It is able to display information about missed calls, notifications about unread messages, time, etc. To look at such a screen, however, is not very convenient, and there is no brightness control, so Doogee has something to work on.

Highscreen Ice 2

Distinguished here and domestic manufacturer highscreen. On the back of his Ice 2 smartphone, there is also a small auxiliary OLED display that can display the time, weather, notifications, and other similar data, automatically turning on after a set time interval.

Second touch display

Perhaps the most promising concept in modern realities is the addition of an auxiliary screen to the main screen, but not monochrome, but color and touch. LG was the first to implement the idea of placing a narrow secondary display above the main one in 2015 by introducing the flagship V10 (). Over the next two years, the South Koreans managed to release three more models: V20 (she too), Q8 and the “state employee” LG X view.

Impressed by the concept, at the beginning of 2017, HTC showed its U Ultra using an identical solution, followed by Meizu in July. Naturally, the Chinese did everything in their own way, installing an additional screen in Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus not from the front, but from the back.

Meizu Pro 7

The embodiment turned out to be more interesting than that of LG, which has been exploiting the same idea for the second year, and HTC, which simply copied the concept from the Koreans. Moreover, the arrangement of two displays one below the other, even taking into account the fact that the camera is located on the side of the auxiliary one, inevitably leads to an increase in dimensions. The Pro 7 doesn't have this problem, and the main screen is also "frameless", so everything looks neat and modern. The only thing is that the issue of the convenience of using the additional display located at the back is somewhat controversial: to look at it, the smartphone will have to be turned upside down with the front screen down.

HTC U Ultra

Regardless of the location of the second display, its purpose is similar for all models: it is an additional screen for displaying all kinds of notifications, time, weather, charge level and other information that can be displayed when the main display is turned off. Other application scenarios include controlling an audio player, displaying the most frequently used contacts or camera modes. Meizu in its Pro 7 also suggests using an additional display to view the image when taking a selfie on the rear module.

Yotaphone, the name that has already become a brand, has been on everyone's lips since last year, when the Yota Devices team released its first smartphone. And less than a year later, the second generation Yotaphone went on sale, in which the developers took into account all their mistakes made in the first product and made it better in all respects. The uniqueness of this device lies in the fact that it has 2 screens, one of which is always on and practically does not waste energy. But Special attention It is worth paying attention to the fact that the smartphone was developed in Russia, and apparently, it is able to compete with eminent global brands operating in this industry.

As promised, the official presentation of YotaPhone 2 took place in Moscow on December 2 at the Museum contemporary art"Garage" in Gorky Park. Conducted a presentation CEO company Yota Devices Vladislav Martynov, and it was noticeable that he himself was very pleased with the result. After that, similar events were held in London on December 3, Milan and Amsterdam on December 4, and in the coming days YotaPhone 2 will also be presented in Dubai. In addition, on December 5, the company entered into a partnership agreement with Vodafone, the leading operator mobile communications in the world. Now new smartphone can also be purchased with a Vodafone contract for the provision of mobile services for both tariff plans (contract and prepaid).

“The agreement with Vodafone is important step to build a successful global business around YotaPhone 2,” says Vlad Martynov, CEO of Yota Devices. – We set an ambitious goal to make YotaPhone 2 a mass product all over the world. Our device, supplemented by the contract of a well-known and reliable operator Vodafone, will be of interest to an even larger circle of users.”

On the this moment YotaPhone 2 is the only smartphone in the world with two touch displays, one of which is always enabled. The device simultaneously combines two displays - a color AMOLED designed specifically for YotaPhone, as well as a black and white EPD display based on electronic ink technology. Both screens have their own battery indicator, regarding which mode you are currently using, and for greater convenience, it can be configured as a counter of the remaining days, hours and minutes. In addition, there is the possibility of wireless charging, which is carried out through the screen located on the rear panel. The smartphone is developed by Yota Devices specialists and includes more than 150 international patents. And as the developers assure, YotaPhone 2 is designed to change the usual experience of interaction between the user and the smartphone.

“We believe that YotaPhone 2 will change the way users interact with smartphones. The presence of a second EPD-display allows the smartphone to be more functional, while consuming less electricity. Therefore, in the future, many devices will receive second screens, - said Vladislav Martynov, - which will serve to create a new direction in the industry. Due to the fact that the phone was developed in our country, part of its cost does not depend on the exchange rate of world currencies. The price of our device in rubles will be more stable compared to devices from other vendors.”

The characteristics of the second generation YotaPhone have been improved in all respects and correspond to modern premium class devices. In particular, the main and rear screens have increased in size. The front LCD AMOLED-display has a diagonal of 5 inches (against 4.3 inches in the previous model), with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (Full HD). The size of the second monochrome E Ink screen is 4.7 inches (instead of 4.3 inches) and has a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels. Both screens are made of heavy-duty glass to protect against scratches and other damage. Gorilla glass 3. And unlike its predecessor, the new YotaPhone is fully touch control both screens (in the first version, only the LCD display was touch). The sensor of the product performs well both in hot climates and at sub-zero temperatures, even if you are wearing gloves.

Despite the larger screens, the device is thinner and lighter, measuring 144 x 69.5 x 8.9mm and weighing 145 grams. For changing dual-core processor the new quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 came with clock frequency 2.3 GHz. The smartphone carries on board 2 GB of RAM, and the amount of internal memory is 32 GB, which, unfortunately, is not expandable. The main camera with LED flash has a resolution of 8 megapixels, front - 2.1 megapixels. The device comes pre-installed with Android 4.4 KitKat, but in the future, the ability to upgrade to version 5 is promised. Among the supported wireless formats are 4G / LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC microchip, GPS / GLONASS satellite navigation receiver, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass.

The battery in YotaPhone 2 is not replaceable, but noticeably larger than that of its predecessor, its capacity is 2500 mAh, which, paired with an energy-efficient AMOLED, and even more so with an EPD display, shows very good results. AT normal mode, when both screens are used alternately, you can get about 1.5-2 days of work without recharging, and if you actively use only black and white screen(calls, SMS, e-mail, work with texts), then the operating time increases to 3 days. You can also use monochrome display as a compact "reader", completely turning off the main one. This is very convenient, since there are no glare from the sun on it, less strain on the eyes, a viewing angle of 180 degrees, and most importantly, in this mode, the smartphone can be used up to 100 hours on a single battery charge.

Another function of the EPD screen is to personalize your YotaPhone. To make it truly personal, any photo, graphic or text can be placed on it. And if we take into account the fact that it can be constantly on (since the captured image no longer consumes energy), then this will allow you to get rid of buying new panels and diversify the appearance of the phone at any time.

If we talk about security, then the special version of YotaPhone 2 is equipped with software that makes the smartphone unique in terms of security. The device passed the FSB check and received a KS1 certificate confirming protection against unauthorized entry and downloading of data.

YotaPhone 2 was created as a competitive smartphone for the global market, and the creation of such a product requires international cooperation. That is why components for YotaPhone are supplied by the world's leading companies (Samsung, Corning, E-ink, Qualcomm).
