Review of the smartphone that survived

02.02.2013

Lyrical introduction

He should have died twice. The first time was when I brushed it off the nightstand onto the tiled floor. And on the hard tile, to my horror, he landed strictly screen down. No problem, survived. Saved by a slightly protruding frame around the screen.

The second time was when I poured a glass of warm sweet tea on my pants in an Egyptian restaurant. By a strange coincidence, it was this time that I put the phone not in the right pocket of my shorts, as usual, but in the left one. He doused the right leg, as a result of which the room key and the handkerchief were soaked, and the device remained dry and unharmed.

Ugums, the stars have so grown that Alcatel OT-997D stayed in the role of my main phone for four long weeks, including a ten-day vacation in the cold winter Sharm el-Sheikh. And, you know, I have no serious complaints against him. I felt comfortable with him. And at home, in cloudy winter St. Petersburg weather, and in the bright sunny south, among palm trees and camels.

An ordinary two-sim android smartphone. One of the sims is my main one. In place of the second on vacation, I stuck an Egyptian one, to organize a tiny local Wi-Fi network. As a result, I got a phone, an Internet source for a pair of laptops and a GPS navigator in one bottle.

Brief conclusion

Alcatel OT-997D is a very good classic dual-SIM mid-range smartphone from late 2012 - early 2013. Android is of average freshness, decent hardware, lots of RAM, nice colors. The screen is not very outstanding, but it is also quite comfortable.

Unpacking, first start-up (video)

Demonstration of work (video)

Equipment

The package bundle is ordinary and boring. In addition to the device itself, the box contains a charger with a microUSB-cord and headphones.

MicroUSB-lanyard, it seems, is quite ordinary, but for some reason did not want to climb into my MHL-adapter (the one that allows you to make HDMI from USB). I tried to charge other phones with this cord - no problem, it fits. Weird.

Price

The device cost around 9 thousand rubles, but now (early February 2013) I don’t see it on sale ...

Appearance

At my huge request, they sent me an apparatus with a red back cover for testing. Nice coloring, cheerful. Although not ideal.

Otherwise, there is nothing interesting in the appearance of the smartphone. Standard connectors and buttons, standard glossy front, standard rounded corners.

The red back part is not only matte, but also very non-slip, so there is no feeling that the device will now run out of your hand.

The glass covering the screen is framed by a rim, thanks to which, as I have already mentioned, it is not so dangerous to drop the device with the glass down. At least on fairly flat surfaces. I have already hit the glass from my Huawei Honor twice in such situations. And for the third replacement, I was even promised a discount in the repair shop.

There is a diode under the screen that can blink when there are missed calls / messages. Healthy.

The firmness of the buttons (power and volume) is quite normal.

The description of the device says that it is covered with a kind of P2i water-repellent compound. We have already written about him in the news, look, there is even a video there.

Well I do not know. If you drop a drop of water on the case or on the screen, this water is in no hurry to push off from the case. Something flows down, of course, but something is happily "smeared" over the surface. I can assume that since I conducted this test at the end of my acquaintance with the device, and not at its beginning, then the body could, for example, become slightly greasy.

Colleagues from Nomobile tried to bury Alcatelchik in the snow for a minute. Survived. But this is unlikely to have something to do with water-repellent nano-coatings. And in general, a minute in the snow is not serious. I stoked my old Nokia E52 three times before she agreed to die. And even then not to the end.

Internals (iron)

The traditional budget platform of the late 2012 - early 2013 sample is MediaTek MT6577 with a dual-core 1 GHz processor. Pleased with the amount of RAM - gigabytes. I used the device on a "pure" android, without additional shells, so I had more than enough memory and I rarely encountered situations when something was unloaded from memory due to the fact that this very memory ran out.

But the device has a little of its own flash-memory - only 4 GB, of which only about 1 GB is available for the needs of the user. So you can't do without memory cards (I used a traditional 16 GB microSD, theoretically cards up to 32 GB are supported).

Despite the budget of the platform, its speed was more than enough for me. I did not feel any inconvenience or terrible slowdowns.

Communication with the outside world

Nothing unusual.

3G. Used both in Egypt and at home. Everything works. Only for some reason quite often switches to 2G, i.e. on EDGE.

Wi-Fi b / g / n. Things are good.

During my stay in Egypt, I quite actively used the device as an access point for distributing the Internet to a couple of laptops.

Bluetooth. They say version 4.0. Didn't investigate.

When connected to a computer via USB, the smartphone is traditionally seen as two removable disks - a piece of 1 GB internal memory and a flash drive.

There is MHL. Those. if you have an adapter from USB to HDMI, you can display the picture on TVs. I checked it works. You can play games and watch movies. True, the picture on the TV screen when watching the test cartoon turned out to be some kind of excessively acidic. If the same cartoon is placed on the TV in a different way, the colors will turn out to be much more pleasant.

USB-OTG (i.e. connecting external devices) is not visible. Mice-flash drives are not recognized by the smartphone.

Screen

A usual 4.3 "TFT screen with a modest 480x800 resolution. Yes, of course, there are many more pleasant screens in all respects in the world. But, by and large, the screen is like a screen. Quite normal. The main disadvantage for my taste is that it is very easily smeared with fingerprints.

I have no information about the protective properties of the screen, but it is clearly in no hurry to be covered with scratches.

Screen in the sun. Usually in winter tests I write: "Alas, they didn't show me the sun, I can't say anything." And here - the full-length Egyptian winter sun, a simple TFT screen, and for comparison - the screens of Huawei Honor and Oppo Finder. What can I say ... Of course, Oppo's amolead looks cooler in the sun, it has much better viewing angles, it is easier to look at the picture and the like. Nevertheless, I did not experience any inconvenience when I used Alcatel in the sun as a navigator or phone, which, you see, says a lot. Yes, of course, I set the brightness to maximum. But there was no need to squint.

It was more funny when I somehow forgot to rearrange the brightness and went out into the sun with the brightness at the very minimum. I had to urgently look for a shadow from the nearest palm tree, and even then I was looking for the desired menu item almost by touch.

There is an automatic brightness control, but in the south I did not use it, I preferred to adjust it manually if necessary. Upon arrival home, I set the automatic brightness. Fine. There is no desire to turn it off.

There are no complaints about the touchscreen. There is a multitouch, five-point. Android control keys bite off the screen. Good or bad is a matter of taste. I'm already used to them.

Software

Android version 4.0.4 without additional skins and with some preinstalled software, most of which are easy to remove.

Battery

Battery capacity - 1800 mAh. Not too much by today's standards.

The test results are as follows:

Test "GPS on the windowsill, 3G". Brightness - 100%, mobile internet and GPS are on, Yandex.maps are running, the device is lying on the windowsill. 5 hours 15 minutes. A very decent result.

Test "GPS on the windowsill, Wi-Fi". The same, but instead of the mobile Internet - Wi-Fi. 5 hours 30 minutes. Good too. But I don't understand why there is such a small difference with the previous test. Usually, the presence of 3G eats off a very decent piece of battery compared to Wi-Fi.

Refresh 3G test. Once every three seconds for an hour, overload a page weighing 30 kilobytes. Minimum brightness. Minus 14% battery.

Refresh Wi-Fi test. The same as in the previous test, but instead of mobile internet - Wi-Fi. The same minus 14%. Very strange.

"Dr. House without interruption" test. Brightness - 50%, sound to headphones - 100%. Xvid video file with 720x400 resolution and 760 MB "weight". Player MX Player. 5 hours 45 minutes. Average result.

For my daily needs, the battery was more than enough for me for a day. Of course, except for situations when I started to actively use the device as an access point.

Alcatel OT-997D as a phone

Without remarks. I did not miss calls. Neither I nor my interlocutors complained about the quality of the connection / voice.

Alcatel OT-997D as a flashlight

The camera flash is trained to work as a flashlight. There are no complaints about her. Quite bright, you can illuminate the path in the dark, not to mention the keyholes. The "Flashlight" softphone is preinstalled, which allows you to adjust the brightness (three possible gradations). Although, of course, the brightness here is not so great that there was a need to adjust it.

Alcatel OT-997D as a photo and video camera

Sounds nice: 8MP camera with flash and autofocus. But, alas, this is definitely not a photo flagship. If you want to photograph something "for memory", look for another device. For household needs, it will do.

There is also a modest front-facing VGA-camera, quite suitable for waving ears to your Skype interlocutor. But nothing more.

The device can shoot video clips at resolutions up to 1280x720. Alas, the quality, again, never impressed.

Alcatel OT-997D as a GPS Navigator

No GLONASS support. The speed of catching satellites is acceptable.

What I didn't quite understand is whether there is AGPS here. In theory, it should be. Because in the settings there are only items "By network coordinates" and "By GPS satellites". And that's all. And the impression is that when there is AGPS, it should be enough for satellites to frolic. But maybe it seemed.

Alcatel OT-997D as a video player

Somewhere I have already seen such behavior ... Everything is bad with my own player. Something, especially heavy, refuses to play at all, somewhere there is no sound. Put MX Player (remember to switch from hardware to software mode), it became easier. With FullHD-video, however, there are still some problems. Somewhere not very smooth playback, somewhere for a few seconds the sound disappears. And if you watch "just HD" (like 1280x720) or less, then everything is fine, no problem.

What did not like

Literally a few weeks later, the contact at the point where the charger was connected began to move away. There is only one service center for the whole of Moscow. They refused to repair it under warranty "Alcatel replied that you must have dropped it and damaged the contact," although upon receipt they all examined no damage.

What we liked

nothing ... he is ordinary

What did not like

The slowdown of the RAM (despite 1 GB).
Poor quality of the back cover plastic - the strap of the cover wiped the trail for 3 weeks.
Reboot your phone regularly (sometimes 2-3 times a day, sometimes once a week). Updating the firmware (to 4.1.1) in the SC, returning to the factory settings does not help.
One earpiece of the headset stopped working after a week.
Reducing the diagonal of the screen due to the location of the soft buttons on it.
There is no supply of spare parts and accessories to Russia.

What we liked

Build quality. Performs all the declared functions. Price.

What did not like

cameras, both the front and the back, are of course not up to good quality, but for such a price it is quite decent. The body of course is lame in some places. plastic, it is plastic, and you can't make it qualitatively under the metal.

What we liked

2 sim cards, the connection catches well, wi-fi, bluetooth is also good, did not complain

What did not like

But does not call

What we liked

Great, fast phone.

What did not like

and without them it was necessary
1 and the BIGGEST DISADVANTAGE OF THE BATTERY if the bluetooth headset is turned on and 2 sim cards hold for 5-6 hours
2 the bluetooth was buggy when the bluetooth headset was turned on, only restarting the phone helped
3.wep camera 0.3MP very poor quality

What we liked

1. Screen 4.3 inches 2. Camera 8MP with flash helped out more than once 3. Availability of 2 SIM cards 4. wi-fi catches 5.1GB of RAM well 6. USB flash drive 32GB 10class accepted and does not work even if it is completely clogged 7.Android 4.0.4

What did not like

minus one for me very often in games with a cache, the laid out cache from poverVR does not fit, the exception was New chelopuk.

What we liked

The declared characteristics are pleasing, there was recently (albeit a tiny) system update, the battery holds up well, the camera is not bad, the RAM is gig, etc.

What did not like

Quite boring design of menus and interface, one blackness. Even the radio could be arranged as normal.
- Some descriptions lie that 4 gigabytes of internal memory, but it only has 2 gigabytes of internal memory.
- TFT screen without any IPS (nothing is visible in the sun)
- The keys were moved from the phone to the monitor, and the resolution dropped to 480 x 735 instead of the declared 480x800.
- Heats up when Wi-Fi is on, during games.
- No adapter included.
- It is difficult to put mp3 on the call
- The sound of the speaker is useless, the interlocutors are heard very badly, the words are swallowed, and some kind of mumbling-ringing.
- No native firmware
- Video recording slows down and jumps.
- For a week of use, the case has already begun to creak
- The logic of the color of the case is not clear: the front is black, the back is gray.
- The battery charge is enough for 1 day of complete mockery at him.
- Sometimes a message pops up that the battery is very hot and the bodies are cut down.

What we liked

Large screen 4.3 inches, glass - 2 SIM cards - 1 gig of RAM - 2-core processor 1 GHz - Photos of more or less normal quality

What did not like

Poor connection quality, camera, screen, broke.

What we liked

What did not like

The camera is bad. Once I turned on the GPS, I waited about 10 minutes, I didn’t wait for the result, I spat and turned it off forever. Positioning in Yandex maps using a GSM signal is quite enough for me.
The body is poor in terms of materials.

What we liked

A kind of solid budget device for unassuming users -))) As a communicator, making calls and going to the Internet is normal, the device works briskly, the connection is excellent, the 4.3 screen, oddly enough, is noticeably larger than the usual 4.0 inches (despite 3 notorious system buttons that eat away part of the useful area of the screen. The quality of the screen for a cheap device is good. The brightness should be set to auto mode, then you can see something in the sun. It is ridiculous to demand the i-background quality of the screen from such a device. attributed to the pluses, with my operation, half an hour of talks and an Internet per day is enough for almost three days.

What did not like

1. The back panel began to wear out from the very first day of careful use.
2. Questions about the quality of 3G reception (I'm not yet claiming that the phone is a problem, but ...).

What we liked

High performance for a reasonable price. Glitchlessness. I will not describe further - everything is very good.

What did not like

A lousy headset included, the design is not particularly impressive, the camera is unpretentious (not a drawback for me), the buttons on the screen take up space.

What we liked

Build quality and materials, GPS is very smart, excellent functionality for the money.

Positioning

Alcatel deliberately focuses on the budget segment of the market in all its manifestations and offers models that are interesting in terms of price / quality ratio. The company limited the upper price segment to smartphones costing 220-230 euros, as they believe that Alcatel brand buyers choose exactly such solutions. On the one hand, it looks logical and justified, on the other hand, it must be admitted that the competition in this segment is maximum, since there are both new models and devices from previous seasons. And each flagship from Alcatel fights with all devices, which, it would seem, makes its chances minimal. But, as sales show, these devices find their customers.

First of all, these are people looking for a reliable phone for reasonable money, with a good, but not the maximum set of functions. First of all, among the buyers of Alcatel OT997D, students can be distinguished, as well as parents who buy such a smartphone for teenagers. Also, the model is quite suitable for everyone who needs an inexpensive smartphone with two SIM-cards on Android. Its main advantage is not only and not so much the price, it is not the lowest for such a device, but the guarantee of quality, operating time and other characteristics. It so happens that Alcatel's models are predictable and customers know what to expect from them. This sets Alcatel apart from other Chinese companies.

Design, dimensions, controls

Alcatel stopped experimenting with design, it became calm, typical and similar to many other models. A distinctive feature is the presence of different color options - in this model only the back cover differs in color, it can be red, gray, white or dark gold. The latter color is not expected in Russia yet. The back cover is made of plastic, has a groove at the bottom.

The appearance of this phone is calm, without any attempts to make the design flashy, it can be safely called pragmatic and to some extent already conservative. Rectangle with rounded edges, plastic frame, but looks like metal. On the front panel there are four touch-sensitive keys, but above the screen there is a peephole for the front camera, as well as a speaker grill.

The phone measures 129.8x68x11 mm and weighs 134 grams. The device is felt in the hand, it cannot be said that it is lightweight. For women, the size is a little too large, although they often show love for large devices, and here it is absolutely impossible to understand them.

On the right side there is a paired volume rocker, on the bottom there is a microUSB connector.

At the top there is a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones, right there is an on / off button. On the back, there is an 8MP camera lens, an LED flash and a speaker hole for calls.

The workmanship of the case is at the top five.

Screen

The diagonal of the screen is 4.3 inches, the resolution is 800x480 pixels, but the screen type is TFT. There is an automatic adjustment of the brightness of the backlight. The quality of the screen is not perfect, it has rather small viewing angles. But there is one huge "but". This screen looks great in its class. For this price group, there can be no claims to the quality of the screen. It behaves normally in the sun, the text remains readable. Therefore, only a notorious perfectionist who lives in isolation from the concept of relativity, and most importantly, prices, can scold this phone for the screen.

Battery

The phone uses a 1800 mAh lithium-ion battery, according to the manufacturer, it can provide up to 360 hours of operation in GSM networks (288 hours in 3G), up to 14 hours of operation (up to 7 in 3G). The full charging time of the battery is about two hours.

In the conditions of Moscow networks, this device worked for about 2 days with an average load (a couple of hours of music, about thirty minutes on the Internet, at least mail, several dozen pictures and about an hour of calls). Three days of work are achievable, but this is more likely to be an exception. In my opinion, you should count on one day of work for those who constantly surf the Internet, use social networks (although I think that this is not a typical example of a phone user from Alcatel). For typical consumers of this company's products, two days is a confident uptime.

Memory, memory cards

The phone has 2 GB of internal memory, of which about 1.4 GB is available to the user (the operator's version of the phone). Memory cards are supported up to 32 GB and are hot swappable, although this requires removing the back cover.

Performance

The phone uses the MTK MT6577 platform, the processor clock speed is 1 GHz. The device is quite nimble, the amount of RAM is 1 GB. In ordinary, everyday tasks the device does not look slow, it copes with most applications, except for a number of games (ShadowGun works pretty well). For my taste, this model has quite decent performance for its price, although it does not boggle the imagination. Below are a couple of screenshots of benchmarks, if you like synthetic parrots, then you can study them.

USB, Bluetooth, communication capabilities

Bluetooth... Version 3, with EDR support. The model supports various profiles, in particular, Headset, Handsfree, Serial Port, Dial Up Networking, File Transfer, Object Push, Basic Printing, SIM Access, A2DP. Working with headsets does not raise any questions, everything is commonplace.

USB connection... In the menu, you can select the connection in the Mass Storage mode.

In the USB Mass Storage mode the device is perfectly picked up without additional drivers, you can copy the necessary data. The USB version is 2, the data transfer rate is about 4.5 Mb / s. When connected via USB, the device recharges.

For GSM networks, EDGE class 12 is provided.

Wi-Fi... The standard 802.11 b / g / n is supported. You can remember the selected networks, automatically connect to them. It is possible to set up a one-touch connection to the router, for this you need to press a button on the router, and also activate a similar button in the device menu (WPA SecureEasySetup).

Camera

The main camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, it has autofocus and the already mentioned LED flash. The camera is not the fastest, but the end result is just acceptable. He's not the best, but not the worst either. Although I would like to get the camera a little higher class and faster. However, you can look at the pictures yourself and conclude whether you like them or not. I don't like the camera in this device.

Video recording in 720p resolution (30 frames), there are no special achievements, but there are no complaints either.

Software Features - Programs from Alcatel

Most Android phones are very similar to each other, for second-tier manufacturers this similarity is dictated by the lack of additional shells. With the advent of Android 4, the quality of the interface has become such that it makes no sense to use any add-ons. Alcatel only added a small number of their widgets, changed the dropdown line. But there is no interface rework.

The device runs Android 4.0.4, it supports over-the-air updates, but there is no information about the availability of version 4.1 for it. You shouldn't count on it, most likely it won't.

For a description of the standard functions of Android 4.x, I am sending you to a separate review.

The set with the phone includes antivirus for 365 days from AVG, in my opinion, its presence is already justified on Android phones.

Android manager is another program that allows you to synchronize data directly from a PC, without the need for a cable. A fairly simple program, it does not cause any complaints. It must first be downloaded from the Alcatel website.

In a programme OfficeSuite you can view office documents, everything is quite nice and simple.

OI Shopping List is a program for creating a shopping list - not very clear, not very pleasant in terms of interface, you can find many free and better analogues.

TouchPal keyboard- one of the keyboard options in the phone, an alternative keyboard that obviously loses to the standard or Swype, which is also preinstalled in the phone.

Traffic manager- a utility that monitors your traffic consumption. Nice and functional enough, on the other hand, free Onavo is much more interesting.

Flashlight- using the LED flash as a flashlight.

Barcode Scanner- everything is clear from the name of the program.

Battery manager Is a very nice program that can automatically switch between different modes of operation.

Impressions

There are no complaints about the connection quality, the device is loud, the vibrating alert is average, but you can feel it in your pocket. The overall rating for the phone is “good”, since it is built at a high level, the functionality is not bad, and the price of $ 280 (in Russia 9,500 rubles) is adequate.

Working with two SIM-cards is nicely done, you can choose available services for each card. The first card supports 3G and data transmission, while the second is used only for GSM calls. This is typical for this kind of devices, while subjectively, the algorithm of operation of two cards is better than that of most models (loss from the network is imperceptible, there are almost no lost calls). One radio module is used here.

Among the shortcomings, I can name a relatively large size and weight, which is not justified by the phone's stuffing. The camera does not inspire much enthusiasm, it is average, but quite typical for this class of products.

In this price segment there is a fairly large offer from different companies - in my opinion, the Sony Xperia Ray model (9,000 rubles) looks interesting, it is comparable in all characteristics, but it has only one SIM card. It is also worth noting the device Huawei Honor, which in many ways is at the level of this model, the differences are not so significant. Explay Infinity may be of some interest. As you can see, there is plenty to choose from, and this is only part of the offer, there are about a dozen of the same type of models in this segment. They have no particular advantages over each other, so the choice of this or that device rather speaks about the tastes of the buyer. In this regard, Alcatel is not bad at all and attracts attention. But the model turned out to be one of many, it is not too bright, and it lacks any unique features. This is also worth considering.
