Microsoft Edge has a dark mode. Here's how to turn it on

This new feature improves browser performance and for this, Edge supporters should thank the developers, otherwise they prefer third-party browsers, they will seem more than unnecessary to them. And really, what good is a process hanging in the Task Manager if you are not using the program responsible for it anyway. So, starting with Windows 10 build 17723, it can be disabled forcibly. There is no explicit option in the Windows 10 settings yet; to remove the process from startup, you need to apply a registry tweak or change the corresponding policy in the Gpedit editor. Not a fact that will help, as you yourself know, insider assemblies are not particularly stable. First, let's see how to do this through the registry. Open the registry editor with the regedit command and expand this branch in the left column:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ MicrosoftEdge \ Main

If you do not have this key (it may not have the MicrosoftEdge and Main subkeys), create it manually. In the last subsection, you need to create a 32-bit DWORD parameter, name it AllowPrelaunch and leave its value as it is by default, that is, 0.

By contrast, a value of 1 enables the Edge background process to auto-load. The new settings will become active after restarting the computer or re-entering the account. This tweak disables the launch of Edge only for the current user, if you want to disable it for all users, make the same changes in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry key.

You can also disable the loading of the Edge background process through the Local Group Policy Editor. Call it with the gpedit.msc command and go through the settings chain User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Microsoft Edge. In the right column, find the policies indicated in the screenshots, enable them and set their parameters to prohibit loading tabs and pre-launching them. The settings should take effect after restarting your computer.

All new operating systems are not without flaws - the same applies to new items from Microsoft Windows 10 and its components. In the new operating system, the company introduced the new Edge browser. The company itself positions Microsoft Edge as a replacement for Internet Explorer. As with all new products, Edge has turned out to be a very fast and functional browser. Also, when working with the new browser, users have a lot of problems related to its launch and its performance.

The main reasons for Edge's unstable performance are its young age. Because of this, he has a lot of errors in his code that prevent him from working normally. Judge for yourself, if you take the history of other browsers, you will notice that they have been developing for more than one year, but they are not devoid of flaws. To help our readers return Microsoft Edge to its former performance, we have prepared a material in which we will describe the solution to this problem using examples.

First way to solve browser problem

If Edge is very slow or takes a long time to open, this problem is most likely related to the garbage that it accumulates in the process. Such garbage can be:

  • Download history log;
  • Log of visited sites;
  • List of entered web addresses;
  • Cookies;
  • Cache of loaded internet pages.

There are two ways to clean the page browser.

The first way directly through the program itself. To do this, open and go to its parameters.

Now let's move on to the parameter block " Clear browser data"And press the button in it Choose what needs to be cleaned... After these steps, we will be taken to the next window, in which you can select the items to be deleted.

Now let's select the elements, as noted above in the image, without touching " Form data" and " Passwords”, As this may remove them. After selecting the elements, click the Clear button. After completing these steps, you can restore the former performance of the program.

Now consider second option cleaning. This cleanup option can be used when the browser does not start. For this we need a well-known utility CCleaner from Piriform Ltd. Having opened the utility, we will immediately get to its first tab " Cleaning».

On this tab, in the first block, you can see the inscription Microsoft Edge with the corresponding icon. It is easy to guess that this particular block is responsible for the cleaning settings. In order to clean Edge, just click the Clean button, as in the first case.

It's worth noting that pressing this button will also clean up the rest of the programs and junk.

Having completed such a cleanup, our review should work. If this does not happen, do not be upset. In the following examples, we will look at the option of completely reinstalling the browser.

Second way to solve browser problem

If the first method did not help you, then the second one will certainly help. This method restores the full performance of the program by creating a new account in Windows 10. That is, after creating a new account, it will have the same Microsoft Edge as in the first account, but with completely zeroed settings. In fact, it will be a clean browser, as after the first installation of Windows 10. To create a new account in Windows, you need to go to its settings and follow the links " Accounts / Family and other users". In the window that opens, click on the link “ Add user for this computer».

Since in our case the local account is used, therefore we will click on the link “ I do not have this person's login details.».

We also skip creating a new online account and to create a local one, click Add user without Microsoft account.

In the window that appears, fill in all the necessary data to create a local account and create it.

By creating an online account, you will achieve a similar effect. This method will completely restore Edge, but for some users it may not be particularly convenient. Judge for yourself, all settings of the Windows 10 operating system and its programs will remain in the first account. To reinstall the browser from the first account, we need console help PowerShell... We will describe this method in the next example.

The third way to solve the problem with the browser

For this method, we need a console PowerShell launched in administrator mode. It's not difficult to run the console in Windows 10 as an administrator. To do this, you first need to call the Windows 10 search engine by typing the WIN + Q key combination.

In the search engine we will type the request we need “ PowerShell". In the found result, right-click on the item responsible for starting PowerShell. After that, a context menu will appear, in which you can select the item responsible for starting PowerShell as administrator.

Now, in the PowerShell console, enter the command cd C: \ Users \ Alexander where “ Alexander"Is the Windows 10 username.

Our further action will be a set of the command, which is shown below in the notebook.

After typing this command and executing it, the Edge browser should completely reinstall and start up as it did before.

The fourth way to solve the problem with the browser

In the fourth method, to reinstall the Microsoft Edge browser, we will try to delete the " Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe", Which is responsible for settings of the program itself... But deleting this directory is not so easy, since it is protected by the system from editing and deleting. To delete this folder, you can use the popular utility Unlocker... This utility will remove any directory from Windows 10... The utility itself can be called through the context menu of the explorer, while selecting the directory to be deleted.

The directory itself can be found at this address in the explorer “ C: \ Users \ Alexander \ AppData \ Local \ Packages", where " Alexander"Is the Windows 10 username. After deleting the directory, restart your PC and use the reinstalled browser again.

The fifth way to solve the problem with the browser

For the fifth method, we will not describe the long instructions for fixing Edge, but we will advise you to use alternative browsers. Judge for yourself, while Microsoft brings its browser to a stable state, it will take a long time, and time is money. Therefore, we advise our readers who want to spend time on the Internet without any problems, to use alternative browsers. The most popular alternatives at the moment are browsers like Google chrome and Mozilla Firefox.

These browsers are developed on their own engines and support all new Internet technologies. They have been in development for years and are very stable programs. Every month the developers release new versions of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, in which they fix bugs, vulnerabilities, and also introduce support for new functions.

I would also like to note that one of the main advantages of Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox over Edge are thousands of extensions that significantly expand their functionality.

For example, in Mozilla Firefox you can put an extension named Video DownloadHelpe r. This extension allows download videos from any site where it is played. For example, it could be vimeo.com or youtube.com.

For Google Chrome, you can download, for example, the extension UpNext... This extension allows turn browser tab into mini player where you can listen to music from YouTube or Last.fm.

Output

Hopefully, Microsoft will make Edge stable in the not too distant future without having to reinstall and clean it up. Moreover, in the summer of 2016, the company will release a major update for Windows 10, which, as it promises, will improve the functionality.

It is worth noting that all the methods discussed are provided for advanced PC users, so be careful and create a checkpoint just in case, so that the browser does not disappear at all.

Already now, it has reached a stage of development that allows using a browser based on a fast and secure engine to perform basic tasks. Edge is a great tool for undemanding users who want to use a native surfing solution for the web. If you want a powerful ecosystem of extensions, then Chrome is the best choice.

Microsoft still has a lot to improve in Edge. In particular, the problem with browser updates needs to be addressed. Now improvements for the built-in web browser in Windows 10 come with updates to the OS functions, i.e. much less frequently compared to competitors.

Microsoft releases feature updates twice a year - usually in the spring and fall, while Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox get new features and improvements almost every month.

One of the most requested features in Microsoft Edge is launching the browser in InPrivate mode. Like Chrome's similar incognito mode, InPrivate lets you browse the Internet without leaving any traces of your activity. Browsing history, temporary Internet files and cookies are not saved on your PC and are automatically deleted when you close your browser.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to start Microsoft Edge in InPrivate mode by default. To do this, you need to create a shortcut on your desktop and assign appropriate launch options to it.

First of all, go to your desktop and create a shortcut. This method works with both regular accounts and administrator accounts.

Right click on the desktop and select New> Shortcut... On the first screen of the wizard, in the "Specify the location of the object" field, enter the following command:

% windir% \ System32 \ cmd.exe / c start shell: AppsFolder \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe! MicrosoftEdge -private

This command is used to start Microsoft Edge and activate InPrivate mode. To do this, a command prompt window is first launched, and then the browser process is launched with the appropriate attribute.

Click “Next” to proceed to the next step. Then you need to assign a name to the shortcut. You can set any name. In the example we will use Microsoft Edge InPrivate because it most accurately describes the purpose of the shortcut. Click the Finish button to complete the creation of the shortcut. The next time you double-click on the shortcut, Edge will launch directly in InPrivate mode, so you don't have to do any extra steps.

Advice: As you can see, by default the shortcut uses the command line icon. This is because the command uses cmd.exe to launch Microsoft Edge in InPrivate mode.

However, you can change the icon as desired. To use the default Edge icon, follow these steps.

Right-click on the shortcut and select the "Properties" menu item. On the Shortcut tab, click the Change Icon ... button. In the "Look for icons in the following file ..." box, specify the following location:

% SystemRoot% \ SystemApps \ Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe \ MicrosoftEdge.exe

Press Enter to load icons from file. You will see the default Edge icon, select it and click OK to close the settings window.

You can move the shortcut to any location. If you accidentally delete a shortcut, follow the steps above to create it again. To make the shortcut work, you do not need to restart your computer, and its creation takes only a few seconds.

Many users use dark mode on desktops and smartphones. It's no secret that these devices are used at night, often in poorly lit rooms. Until recently, dark mode was not available to everyone, except for macOS users, but things quickly changed. In Windows 10 1809 (October 2018 Update), a full-fledged "Dark theme" is available, but as far as browsers are concerned, it is very rare when the site you are viewing has a dark theme, for this you can use extensions and add-ons. is a great extension that allows you to enable dark mode for any site in the Microsoft Edge browser.

Night Eye works with almost any site and web pages, the extension has a number of useful settings that allow you to choose the best look for the pages you are viewing.

Dark Mode for Websites in Microsoft Edge

Install Night Eye from the Microsoft store. After installing the extension, enable the permissions required to run and enable it.

Once enabled, click the extension icon that appears next to the address bar. Select mode "Dark" and refresh the website you are viewing.

"Night Eye" is multifunctional; it allows you to replace specific colors on the website with any other color of your choice. This is useful if the dark mode makes it difficult to read the pages of the site.

It also darkens images slightly, so that images that are mostly white or have a lot of white or bright color also have a darker tint and are easier to view. There is a dedicated brightness slider that allows you to manually adjust the brightness. The default is 50%. There are similar settings for contrast, saturation, blue light, and more.

There are several extensions, even for the Firefox browser, that come close to the same functionality (website color and brightness controls). What makes the extension more impressive is how well it works on almost all sites. You can check dark mode on popular websites YouTube, Twitter, or Facebook.

The Microsoft Edge browser has a dark mode ... in a way. The downside is that absolutely dark mode is achieved only by extension - just like,. Let's take a look at the possibilities of repainting Edge black.

Built-in dark Edge theme.

Edge has a light and dark theme. To darken the window, click the 3 Dots button in the upper right corner of Edge, scroll down and click Options. In the Options panel, find "Theme Selection" and change it from Light to Dark.

The thing is, the Edge theme only affects the tab bar and URL bar at the top of the window, as well as the favorites, reading list, books, history, and downloads bar that slide out to the right. Web pages remain bright white. Bummer.

We put out the light.

However, you can change this with the Turn Off the Lights extension for Microsoft Edge. Install it and it will recolor the background of web pages to black and the text to white. True, not by default. The extension places a lightbulb button in the upper right corner, but all it does is repaint the current web page in dim shades of gray. This is useful when browsing YouTube because it’s everything on the page except the video player, but it’s useful for a few other things.

Go to the extension options (right click on the light bulb and choose "Control> Options") and you will find the true dark mode. Go to the Night Mode tab in the options, and then check the box next to Show night mode switch below web page to darken or lighten pages. This will place a toggle switch in the lower-left corner of Edge to switch the current webpage to dark mode, complete with a black background and white text.
