For various problems with the computer (during freezes, strong noise from coolers, brakes, etc.), it is always recommended to pay attention to the temperature of the processor, video card.

Well, to determine the temperature and control it, special programs are needed - in fact, today's article will be about them.

Note that the article will consider only those programs that can work with devices from different manufacturers (AMD, Nvidia, Intel, etc.), i.e. nothing special.

Universal software

Why universal? Because with it, you can find out the temperature of all PC components at once. This category of software is the most widespread and in demand among users.

AIDA 64

One of the best utilities for determining the characteristics of a computer (created on the basis of the not unknown once Everest). To view the temperature in it, open the "Computer / Sensors" tab (see the screen above).

Of the minuses: the program is paid (however, in the free version there are quite a few tools available and they can be used quite well ...).

Speccy

Multifunctional and free utility for viewing various characteristics of a computer, laptop (by the way, this utility is from the developer of the famous CCleaner program) .

It is distinguished, first of all, by its simplicity and clarity. The necessary tabs are displayed on the left, moving through which, you can quickly collect all the information about the hardware.

For reference: in general, the utility supports Russian, but if your language is set to English by default, then: CPU is a processor, Graphic is a video card, Storage is drives (hard drives, solid-state drives, etc.).

HWMonitor

HWMonitor - one of the most informative temperature monitors (clickable screen)

When you start HWMonitor, two windows will open at once: one of them will have the "Sensors" button - just press it. Next, you will see a large table with various indicators: CPU, HDD, etc.

This utility is remarkable in that it shows not only the current temperature value (Current), but also the minimum, and maximum, and average (Average). See the screenshot above.

SpeedFan

Generally, this program is used to adjust the rotational speed of coolers (). But its small window also monitors the temperature of the main components (after all, you can't adjust the speed without knowing what's going on with the temperature ?!).

In general, the utility is very simple, it supports the Russian language. Administrator rights may be required to run.

Astra 32

Not such a popular utility, however, even in an unregistered version, the program's capabilities are more than enough for an average user. Allows you to get detailed information about the hardware (moreover, including not documented).

Allows you to get information about RAM, chipset, BIOS, disks, CPU, motherboard, etc. in a few mouse clicks. You can be convinced of the "breadth" of the information received on the basis of the screen above (there are no fewer tabs than in the same Aida 64).

A very compact utility that can show the maximum information about your processor: number of cores, threads, model, platform, frequency, VID, revision, temperature (limit, average, min. And max.), Energy, etc. An example is shown above.

The program is "omnivorous", supports most modern CPUs.

Through Powershell

In Windows 10, to start the Powershell shell, just right-click on "START". Please note that you need to run Powershell as administrator!

To check the temperature on the command line, enter the command:

Pay attention to:

  1. the command line must be run as administrator (how to do this, you can);
  2. the resulting figure will need to be converted to degrees Celsius - i.e. divide it by 10 and subtract 273.15 (see example below on the screenshot).

BIOS (UEFI)

As a rule, it is enough to open the main BIOS | UEFI page and find out all the most basic information about the computer / laptop: processor model, disk model, mat. boards, amount of RAM, temperature, etc.

From Intel, AMD

There are specials from processor manufacturers (Intel, AMD). utilities for monitoring the state of the CPU.

  1. For Intel, it can be Intel® Desktop Utilities or Intel® Extreme Tuning Utility (on the office page),
  2. For AMD, for example, AMD System Monitor or AMD PRO Control Center (on the official page).

For video card

GPU Temp

A very simple utility for monitoring the temperature of a video card. Allows you to monitor the temperature in games, during overclocking, searching for reasons for unstable work, etc.

The program is free, works in all popular Windows XP, 7, 8, 10 (32 | 64 bits).

GPU-Z

One of the most informative utilities for determining the characteristics of video cards. Supports NVIDIA, AMD, ATI and Intel graphics cards (both the newest models and those released more than 10 years ago). Demonstrates the adapter model, the current parameters of the video card (memory, load, temperature, etc.).

The utility does not require installation, supports Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10.

For disk (HDD, SSD)

An excellent utility that monitors the status of disks in the system (both hard drives (HDD) and solid-state drives (SSD) are supported). The program monitors the "health" of the disk and will be able to warn you in time that the disk may soon become unusable.

I would like to note one more interesting function: HDDLife allows you to adjust the noise level of the disk operation (useful for those who have a clicks on the disk during operation ...).

CrystalDiskInfo

Free utility from a Japanese developer (open source). Allows you to get detailed information about the state of the hard disk, see the readings of S.M.A.R.T. (note: self-diagnosis of the disk), monitor the temperature.

By the way, the utility automatically gives a verdict to the disk, for example, in the screenshot above, "Good" means everything is in order. If something is wrong, then one of the "circles" in the program will turn red (example below).

HD Tune

Multifunctional program for testing the performance and diagnostics of disks (HDD, SSD, flash drives, etc.). A wide variety of interfaces are supported: SCSI, SATA or IDE.

In addition, the program has in its arsenal monitors (temperature, disk load, etc.). There is a possibility of setting the AAM mode (affects the noise level of the disk during HDD operation).

Hard Disk Sentinel

Hard Disk Sentinel is a multifunctional utility for diagnosing and monitoring the status of disks in the system.

Key features: temperature control (in real time: if something is wrong, the program will notify you in time), viewing S.M.A.R.T. attributes, maintaining graphs and logs, automated data copying, HDD testing, hotkey support, password protection.

Earlier I wrote an article on what to do if it appears. There can be many reasons for its appearance, and one of the most common is overheating. That is, the temperature of the video card is too high. And in order to exclude this reason, it needs to be checked.

Checking the temperature of the video card is carried out using special programs. There are quite a few of them, so below we will consider only a few of them - the most popular. It is not at all necessary to use them all: it is enough to choose one - which one you liked the most.

Free GPU-Z Utility

Let's start with the GPU-Z utility. This is a fairly simple program for checking the temperature of a video card in Russian. Its main advantages:

  • free;
  • does not require installation;
  • shows a lot of additional useful information (video memory frequency, cooler speed, etc.).

And most importantly: using it is as easy as shelling pears. Download this program from the office. site and run. Go to the "Sensors" tab and look at the "GPU Temperature" item. Move the mouse cursor over it, and you will see a hint (in Russian) what it shows.

As you can see, in my case, the temperature of the video card is 28 degrees (in idle mode). This is a wonderful indicator that proves that everything is fine with her.

By the way, using this utility, you can view the temperature of the video card at the time of peak load. For example, while playing. But before launching it, click on the triangle icon and in the drop-down list select the third item - "Show Highest Reading". The GPU-Z utility will now display the maximum temperature.

Start the game, play for about 30 minutes, then close it and see what the program shows. If the maximum temperature does not exceed 90 degrees, then everything is fine. At least there is definitely no overheating.

Functional program AIDA64

The program is paid (link), but there is a 30-day free period. Plus, it has powerful functionality and shows a lot of useful information. For example, with its help you can see the exact name of the RAM (in order to understand which one needs to be purchased), etc. By the way, it is completely in Russian.

Also AIDA64 monitors the temperature of the video card. To view it, open the "Computer" section and select "Sensors". The operating temperature is shown here in the line "GPU Diode". In the screenshot below, it is 28 degrees.

Convenient utility GPUTemp

Another program for measuring temperature is GPUTemp. It is intended only for this and does not show any unnecessary information. Therefore, just launch it and look at the item "GPU Core".

By the way, this program has one very handy feature. If you hide it, then it will show the temperature in the tray (near the clock).

Agree, this is very convenient. After all, this way you can see the temperature of the video card without opening the utility itself.

Free Portable Speccy

Speccy is free, plus there is even a portable version (no installation required).

Run the program, and in the main window you can immediately find out everything about your video card (and at the same time - the processor, motherboard and hard drive).

What should be the temperature of the video card?

So, you've installed one of the programs, looked at what it shows and…. What's next? What is the normal temperature for a video card? How to understand: is it warming up or not?

The maximum allowable temperature of a video card differs slightly depending on:

  • manufacturer (Nvidia and AMD);
  • type of cooling (active and passive);
  • operating mode (on the desktop or during the game).

Nvidia and AMD video cards can be either active or passively cooled. But in general, the general picture regarding normal temperature should be clear.

The video card on the laptop is overheating: what to do?

What to do if you find that the video card on your laptop or computer is overheating? Action is urgently needed:

  1. Perform dust cleaning. Most often, overheating occurs due to its large amount. Therefore, it is recommended to disassemble the PC or laptop to clean it from dust.
  2. Check the condition of the thermal paste. She is responsible for cooling the video card. Therefore, when it dries, the GPU temperature will rise sharply even in idle mode. In this case, you need to apply a new layer of thermal paste.
  3. Check coolers. They may be defective or not work properly due to dust.
  4. Check the power supply. If it is faulty, this can lead to problems in the operation of the video card (i.e., to overheating).

If you can do it all yourself - great. If not, contact your friends or the service center for help.

Probably every computer user has encountered overheating of a video card or processor. This is the first thing that has to be checked after an incomprehensible self-shutdown of the computer or the appearance of a blue screen of death - the heating temperature of the processor and video card. In principle, even before the emergency shutdown, the overheating of the video card becomes visible on the monitor - image artifacts may appear, programs and games will begin to freeze, a constant reboot will interfere with the work. Blue screen is the main symptom of this particular type of functional impairment.

The main reasons for computer overheating under normal conditions of use are:

The most common causes of computer overheating are depreciation of cooling elements and dust. To clean the computer from dust, you just need to periodically vacuum it. The wear of the fans is evidenced by the appearance of noise, crackling, periodic stoppages of their work. Because of this, the thermal conductivity of the thermal interface deteriorates. Also, during service, you need to replace the thermal paste, thermal pads.

This amount of dust will kill any processor.

If on a laptop you often play powerful games, run complex video processing programs or work with 3d, etc., then the video card and processor may also overheat. Viruses can also heavily load the system.

Normal operating temperatures

The permissible processor temperature should be kept within 40-60 degrees. If after measuring you notice that the temperature indicator has exceeded the maximum permissible value, then you need to take some measures. It is better not to allow destructive overheating of the processor, because this is an expensive construct, the replacement of which and even repairs will cost a considerable amount.

The temperature of the video card should be kept within 40-50 degrees. For more powerful video cards, 60-70 degrees will be normal. The higher this indicator rises, the more the wear of the video card will increase and the more often problems with the image will appear - artifacts (the appearance of dots, stripes), the loss of textures and freezes.

In order to timely detect an abnormal increase in the temperature of computer components, it is necessary to install a program to track its indicators. There are a lot of sensors inside any device that measure the temperature of parts, voltage and fan speed. The number of sensors differs depending on the model of the device, its components, and connection options. For example, a cooler and a rotational speed meter in different devices can be connected to the motherboard or to a power supply.

Computer sensors are rarely calibrated. Therefore, the error between temperatures can sometimes jump up to 10 degrees. This must be taken into account if such a situation occurs: judging by the readings of the sensors, the video card heats up to 60 degrees, the max of the device is 70. But at the moment the games are starting to slow down. This means that the sensor does not show the real temperature, but overheating is present.

For gamers, special devices have been developed that allow you to control and regulate the temperature of internal components.

There are a lot of programs for viewing readings of temperature sensors. However, most of them cannot be called completely reliable. Some measure the temperature accurately, but the sensors may not be calibrated, others do not support your computer's components, and still others may be completely buggy. But with a careful search on the Internet, you can find universal programs that can be downloaded directly to your computer for free and without registration. You can give preference to paid programs, the choice of which is also quite large.

Programs for measuring the temperature of the processor

There are no special programs for measuring the temperature of the processor only. This is a rather narrow functionality that is implemented in a bundle with other capabilities. The processor temperature will be known along with all other system information. Such programs show all information about the processor, video card, hard disk, motherboard, fans. Using CPU-Z, you can find out the processor temperature, number of cores, specifications and processor model.

  • There are more sophisticated programs, such as EVEREST Ultimate Edition, which are mainly intended for professionals. Of course, any user can use EVEREST, but only a person who thoroughly understands the software and hardware can use most of the data. EVEREST Ultimate Edition is a paid program.
  • SpeedFan is a free program that will help you track the performance of computer sensors: temperatures, speed and voltage of the processor, hard drive, etc.
  • HWMonitor Portable 1.27 can display temperature and voltage readings on-line.

Programs for viewing the temperature of the video card

Likewise, the programs for viewing the temperature of the video card are universal and show detailed information about the entire system. That is, in addition to the temperature, you can see the manufacturer's name, device ID, model, frequency of the video card cores, its voltage and bandwidth during data exchange, as well as the type and amount of memory, etc. Using these programs is not difficult, some do not even require installation. You can list such programs as:

One of the simplest and most reliable programs for monitoring temperature changes is the HWmonitor program. It provides ample information about the temperature and other characteristics of the computer. Yes, almost all gadgets and small programs can be found and downloaded for free. Paid programs are usually professional monsters like the EVEREST Ultimate Edition. For preventive purposes, checking the temperature regime, with an average load on the computer, provided that it is not overclocked by a gamer for powerful games, small programs are quite enough.

How to control overheating in BIOS

In Bios, you need to see where the parameter we need is located - the processor temperature. You need to look for it in the sections "Hardware", "Power" under the name "Hardware monitor" (monitoring). It should be borne in mind that when the computer is booted, when turned on, the processor temperature is always an order of magnitude higher than during stable operation. Therefore, you need to check the temperature not from the very beginning of work, but already in the process.

What to do if the sensors record a temperature rise

If you observe that the maximum permissible temperatures are exceeded, it is necessary to carry out preventive work. And first of all, clean the computer from dust. This can be done with an ordinary vacuum cleaner. Be sure to pay attention to the fans - the blades must be clean. The thermal paste on the video card needs to be replaced. The old thermal paste must be carefully removed - it loses its properties over time, and the new one should be applied in a thin layer.

If the summer is hot or the user is trying to overclock the computer for their games or uses powerful programs, you just need to install additional coolers. The cooler can be installed on a video card, on a processor, on a motherboard. It is better to always install new fans - they are inexpensive, and lubrication with old technical oil, as a rule, does not give a long-term effect. When installing new fans, check if there is anything unnecessary along the path of air movement: loops, all wires must be neatly laid. In the summer, many people simply remove the side cover of the system unit to better cool the computer.

Sometimes you need to make constant monitoring of the state of the processor. It is best to use for this some simple, compact and lightweight program that practically does not load the system. Core Temp meets all of the above specifications.

This software is able to work from the system tray, where it monitors the temperature and CPU load in real time. In addition, Core Temp also has a built-in overheating protection function. When the temperature reaches the maximum value, you will receive a corresponding notification or the PC will be automatically turned off.

RealTemp

RealTemp does not differ much from the previous representative, but it has its own characteristics. For example, it contains two simple tests for checking a component, allowing you to determine the state of the processor, to identify its maximum heating and performance.

This program has a large number of different settings, which will allow you to optimize it as much as possible for yourself. Of the shortcomings, I would like to note the rather limited functionality and the absence of the Russian language.

Above, we examined in detail a small number of programs for measuring the temperature of the processor and video card. All of them are somewhat similar to each other, but have unique tools and functions. Choose the representative who is most suitable for you and start monitoring the heating of the components.

If it was found that the temperature indicators of the CPU are higher than normal, in principle, there is no need to immediately run to repairs.
