A computer monitor is like a TV. Connect the monitor to a digital TV set-top box

There are several situations where you need to connect TV to computer... Fortunately, modern TVs fully support this feature. But first you need to clarify in what specific capacity you want to use this bundle. Well, for example, you can just use a TV instead of a monitor. by wifi or by cable... This method is the most common, and when a user enters a query into a search engine on the topic of our article, then, as a rule, he needs this information.

How to connect a TV to a computer instead of a monitor?

What for? Quite often there are situations when it is advisable to have a larger monitor. For example, if you are playing a game, it is much more enjoyable to watch everything on the big screen. Or if you want to watch a movie from the Internet directly on the big screen, and your zombie doesn't support an Internet connection.

There is nothing complicated in connecting a TV to a computer, in general, not, and even a child can cope with this. The main thing is to know what input connectors the TV has, which we want to use as a monitor.

Analog or digital?

Without going into details that an ordinary TV consumer does not need to know, I will say that there are two types of transmission and reception of a broadcasting signal - analog and digital. With analog, the transmitter station sends out a signal from electromagnetic waves, which cause vibrations in the antenna of the receiver, that is, the TV, and give an idea of what picture and sound to show on the screen.

With digital at the transmitter station, this signal is encoded into a digital code, which is received and recognized by the receiver. Thus, it turns out that the analog signal can arrive with distortion caused by other waves. Digital, if any, comes in an absolutely pure form. Also, an analog signal can be received by any device that is configured to work on the same principle as the transmitting station. Digital, however, is reliably protected by a code that cannot be recognized if your device does not have an exact key to it.

As a result, what do we have in practice? Analog broadcasting is central television, which is caught by everyone, even the most ancient televisions. Digital - high quality video that is perceived only by adapted devices.

So, when you want to know how to connect a TV to a computer as a monitor, that is, there are three ways - either through cables with analog connectors, or with digital ones, or from digital to analog through a special converter, since you cannot directly connect a TV through a computer. ... All these difficulties occur due to the fact that your TV may not have the only connector that is on your computer. And although modern models have most of them and some kind of direct connection should definitely come up, sometimes it happens that you still have an old monitor or computer where something is missing.

It is also necessary to separate the connection of the video signal and audio - in most cases they occur separately.

How to connect a TV through a computer - video signal

  1. VGA (or D-Sub)

Almost all monitors, televisions and computers have this output for connection through a computer to a TV set, with the exception of perhaps only some inexpensive models of laptops and netbooks. The standard, the oldest analog way of connecting the monitor to the system unit.

  2. DVI

A more advanced connection that works with both analog and digital monitors. Has its own subgroups:

    • DVI-D - works with digital connection only
    • DVI-A - analog type only
    • DVI-I - with both types

Very often you can see how a DVI-A or DVI-I cable is connected to VGA through an adapter.

  3. S-Video

Another popular connector. Basically, it is present on non-computer equipment, therefore, to connect a computer to a TV via this port, you will need an adapter, or a converter, if we are talking, for example, about VGA.

  4. RCA

It has long been an outdated connector, which, however, is found on all versions of TVs and is the most convenient for self-crimping at home. After all, it is enough to simply buy ordinary single-core coaxial cables and connect them to the commonly sold nozzle plugs. Consists of three wires - two audio and one video. It is also called for the characteristic color of the tulip connectors. In the absence of appropriate connectors, it is easy to use adapters or converters to s-video or vga.

  5. Scart

A modern connector that allows you to achieve high picture quality and transmit simultaneously video and audio signals. All modern TVs are equipped with it, but the computer may not. In this case, it is also advisable to use an adapter, for example, to VGA, RCA or S-Video with an additional audio cable.

  6. HDMI connection

Another modern connector for connecting a TV to a computer with simultaneous transmission of high quality audio and video. Modern computers and laptops have HDMI connectors, but if you have to connect a remote monitor, then a long cable will be very expensive and it will be more expedient to connect to it with other types of cables. You can also use a DVI-I adapter. But organizing an adapter from the HDMI to VGA connection will not work, since through HDMI - the signal is digital, and VGA is analog. To do this, you need a special video converter that converts a digital signal into an analog one. A special feature of this connector is the simultaneous transmission of audio and video signals.

  7. There are a few more new, but still exotic connectors for connecting a computer to a TV and monitor. Such as UDI and DisplayPort. However, only a few companies have announced their support so far, so you can rarely get caught.

  8. Despite the variety of adapters, it is better to use the same connectors on both devices for minimal losses in the quality of the video image. Most likely, of all this variety, at least one method will coincide. If, nevertheless, you need an adapter from one standard to another, then do not rush to buy adapters.

Consult the seller, telling him exactly from which connector to which you need to recode the video and what exactly is needed for this. In some cases, simply adapters will be enough, in others, special converters will be needed.

How to connect computer audio signal to TV?

This is about video transmission. The sound from the computer to the TV is connected using a cable, which has a standard computer MiniJack connector on one end, and two tulip audio (RCA) for stereo sound on the other.

Or by inserting an adapter for tulips into the audio output of the computer. In this case, again, you can easily make tulips with your own hands.

On a computer, one end that a MiniJack (a regular plug of standard headphones) plugs into the jack next to which the headphones are drawn. It is usually green in color.

And on the TV there are two entrances for tulips, usually red and white (or black) colors.

How can you connect a computer to a TV in practice?

Now let's take a direct look at how the connection takes place using one of the cables. Let's take the simplest and most modern option - an HDMI cable, which will allow you to simultaneously transmit sound and picture to your TV. This connector is present on all TVs released in recent years and is very often found on laptops and modern video cards in computers.

We connect the computer with a cable and a TV cable through the appropriate connectors.

We take the remote control from the TV set and press the "Input" button, where we select HDMI as the signal source. Automatically video and audio signal will be captured from your computer and an identical picture will appear on two screens.

If your computer does not have HDMI, you can use one of the other types of cables, but you will have to separately pull the audio and video. For example, for video, the most popular is the old VGA connector, which is present on very many devices, or again, use an adapter. And audio through a regular tulip. Or use the adapters mentioned above. In this case, already in the TV as a source of audio and video, you will need to indicate those connectors that you used.

There is a situation when the computer has only a DVI digital output, and the TV has HDMI, how to connect them in this case, because DVI is not intended to transmit sound? There is a way out, but it does not always work - you can try using a dvi-hdmi adapter connected to your computer. And already connect the hdmi cable to it and stretch it to the zombie box. At the same time, to transmit sound, you need to transfer the audio signal to a similar connector on the video card from the built-in S / PDIF sound card connector (if there is one, of course) to the motherboard so that it is also fed to the DVI output. I repeat - this option may not work on all models of motherboards and video cards, so it's better to choose the simpler methods.

How to mirror screen from computer to TV via wifi on Windows 7 or 10?

The output of the computer screen image to the TV can be realized not only via various types of cables, but also via WiFi. There are several ways to do this.

  • Intel and Windows 10 computers already have a built-in feature called. With its help, it is easy to duplicate the computer screen to the TV via a wireless signal without third-party software.
  • Another way is to use. To do this, you need to install a separate one on the TV. And on the computer - an application with which it will work. This option is suitable for any operating system, both Windows of all versions and for.
  • Finally, there is another device specially designed for this type of connection -. We will also talk about this in another article.

These are the ways to connect a TV to a computer to broadcast images from it instead of a monitor.

Many have already lost the need for such a device as a TV. To get acquainted with the news, there are many thematic resources, entertainment programs can be watched on YouTube, and a new film can be bought on disc or viewed in an online cinema. In this regard, the "box" becomes unnecessary, but sometimes the need for it still arises. And then the question becomes natural:can the monitor be used as a TV? What do you need to watch TV programs, getting off with "little blood", that is, with minimal financial investments?

There is also a category of the population for whom TV still plays an important role in life. Basically, these are people of the older generation, but there are quite a few of them among young people. On the contrary, they may be interested incan the TV be used like. If you buy a PC for the first time, and you already have a good TV, you want to save money on the display. And in a one-room apartment there may not be a place for a computer.

Understand what universal solutions exist andhow can i use a computer monitor-tv at home, our material will help. The article is also devoted to the reverse "transformation". By reading it, you will knowhow to use a monitor as a TV, and TV as a PC display.

Is it possible TV set use as a computer monitor? The answer to the question is yes in 99% of cases, but it has its own nuances. What is needed for this - in more detail below, point by point.

CRT TV

TVs on cathode ray tubes (kinescopes, in common parlance) are no longer produced by large companies, but many still have them. Ancient copies of Soviet production (and European ones too), equipped with a minimum of interfaces, including a DIN-like connector for connecting external equipment - this is just the 1% mentioned above. Without using a bunch of adapters and "shamanism" with a soldering iron, you will not be able to display a picture from a PC on them. And even if it works out, the practical meaning of such actions is questionable. The picture will turn out to be just awful.

The relatively new ones (released less than 20 years ago) are equipped with SCART connectors and / or "tulips" for connecting an external picture source. Such a TV can be used as a monitor. To do this, from S-Video (if the video card has a similar connector) or VGA to SCART and "tulip". But the point in such an undertaking is a little more than zero. After all, the horizontal resolution of a television signal is 480 or 576 lines, which is frankly small against the background of 720, 768 or 1080 lines on a computer. At the very least, it will be uncomfortable to look at the inscriptions on the screen. Due to the limited bandwidth of the interface (as a result - the resolution of the picture), analog standards have been abandoned in the world. Modern (less than 3 years old) video cards are no longer equipped with either VGA or S-Video connectors.

LCD / OLED / Plasma TV

With the advent of digital technologies in television, the active development of new broadcasting standards, distinguished by improved picture quality, began. for 15 years (if not more) it has been working in digital format, cable is also switching to digital, and in the 2010s, an active refusal from analogue broadcasting of terrestrial channels began, in favor of DVB standards. In this regard, it has become easier to equip TV sets with new interfaces: it is enough to unsolder the connector and install a chip that converts the "raw" digital signal from an external source into LVDS pulses that are understandable to the screen.

Method 2: Redesigning the monitor

What if the monitor does not have HDMI, you don’t want to buy an adapter, you don’t want to spend money on a tuner, but you are only interested in analog channels? If you have the skills to repair digital equipment, the ability to work with a soldering iron, the desire to modernize electronics with your own hands, inspiration and free time - this section will help. A clear plus is the fact that in this way you can bring a faulty monitor back to life if its matrix is not damaged.

The enterprising Chinese have created turnkey solutions for local small firms looking to manufacture from off-the-shelf components. Companies like Elecrealm offer one-stop solutions for them. LVDS scaler boards allow you to turn any matrix (from a monitor, TV, laptop or other device) that works with this interface into a TV. These devices are easy to buy in China, as well as in themed radio stores in Ukraine. They are a board that is capable of receiving analog channels, displaying a picture via VGA, HDMI, "tulip", and (optionally) playing files from.

To use the monitor like a TV, you need to purchase such a board (the price from the Chinese - from 10 dollars, from us - from 400 UAH) and install it in the monitor instead of the "native" filling. You also need to get an LVDS loop, designed to connect the matrix. Typically, 30-pin cables are used in computer displays, but there are exceptions. You can do without a loop, but then you will have to solder a lot of thin veins to the board. To convert the monitor into a TV, you will also need a dozen thin insulated wires that will connect the board with the buttons (you can buy a ready-made board with keys and an IR control diode so as not to solder), and a pair of 1-2 W speakers.

It is worth paying attention to the backlighting. If it is lamp-based (on fluorescent lamps), and the inverter responsible for adjusting the brightness is built into the scaler (display controller) board, you need to buy a separate inverter. You can replace the lamps with diode strips, complete with their own controller, or power them directly from 12 volts on the board. This method is preferable for old displays, the lamps of which are "hooked" and can no longer give the desired brightness. If the monitor's power supply is internal and the inverter is on its board (the backlight cables go to the power supply board), you need to find out which pins of the new scaler's pins are responsible for brightness control and solder these pins to them (on / off and adjust / dimming). Everything should be done in accordance with the documentation for the purchased scaller board.

Attention! Converting the monitor into a TV will void the manufacturer's warranty. The process requires a certain level of skill and ability to read English-language technical documentation. The following instructions are for people with professional training. The editors are not responsible for the damage of devices caused by unqualified intervention, or for another reason.

For alteration, the monitor must be disassembled.

  1. Detach the gimbal leg / mount.
  2. Unscrew the screws at the rear of the housing, if any.
  3. With an unnecessary credit card or a pick, pry off the front frame and walk around the perimeter to detach the latches.
  4. Unscrew the protection of the electronics box.
  5. Disconnect all cables from the internal cards.
  6. Unscrew the matrix controller (the board on which the connectors for connecting to the PC are located), remove it.

Further alteration of the monitor into a TV requires skills in working with a soldering iron and the ability to read technical documentation. All pinouts, the purpose of each pin, and pinout methods are listed by the manufacturer in the Product-Specific DataSheet.

After connecting the antenna cable, you can start tuning channels. Switching between monitor / TV modes is carried out using the control panel or the corresponding button under the screen.

This method is not devoid of several disadvantages that must be taken into account beforeuse the monitor as a TV... Firstly, analog broadcasting is already out of date and will be switched off in a year or two. According to the latest data from the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting, this will happen on January 1, 2018. You will have to buy a tuner or purchase a scaller with DVB-T2 support, which is more expensive. The second problem is the complexity of the conversion procedure itself for an inexperienced user. The third disadvantage is the loss of warranty from the monitor manufacturer.

Instead of a conclusion

With that how can you use a monitor as a TV, all clear. The same applies to the issue of using TV as a display. But, really, there is no compromise option that will eliminate the need to use adapters, receivers, work with a soldering iron and other difficulties? Yes, but it requires investment. You just need to buy a universal device that combines TV and display functions for your PC.Computer monitor and TV can be used"In one person." For this, HDMI is also suitable, having a diagonal of 20-30 ″ (more is too much, as for a universal display) and a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels.

If a monitor is used together with a PC, which is more than one year old, and there is no TV at all, or it is old and does not support DVB-T2 broadcasting, such a solution will not be a pointless waste of money. After all, if you need both, but there is no room for two devices in the room, sooner or later, both devices will need to be replaced with one.

For those who work at the keyboard, over time, workspace begins to lack. No matter how large the screen is, all the windows on it do not want to fit at all, and even relatives strive to tear the owner of the PC away from their favorite technology - to play alone, others do not mind watching a movie. Of course, such problems can be solved by purchasing computers for each family member, but there are other ways out.

I think many people appreciated the advantages of a high-quality picture transmitted to a TV by a computer, successfully used this technique together - for video games on a large screen, or watching feature films, and also found out for themselves the dubious convenience of using a TV in everyday work at a PC. Some even decided to use the LCD panel as an additional monitor. Well, let's get down to it.

In order for us to be successful, a video card must be able to work with multiple devices. Read the instructions, or inspect its panel - the presence of several connectors indicates this possibility:

  1. VGA... The oldest analog interface standard, subject to video signal degradation due to interference, if possible, it should be abandoned in favor of digital interfaces.
  2. HDMI... New generation digital interface. Both video and multi-channel audio are transmitted.
  3. DP (Display port)... The most modern port. It has the ability to transmit both high-resolution video (up to 3840 x 2400) and audio signals.
  4. DVI... The digital interface replaced VGA. The signal quality is much higher, but it has the same drawback as its predecessor - there is no sound transmission channel.

We chose the desired interface - connect the cable, select the input to which you are connected in the TV menu, and we will take care of the settings on the computer.

Right-click on a free space on the desktop, in the menu that opens, we need the item "Screen resolution". (Try to guess that this is where the work with multiple monitors is configured ...)

As you can see, the system has not yet detected our TV.

We press the button "find" and we immediately see that the computer now has two monitors:

Now we select our TV and set it a resolution of 1920 × 1080 and higher, if your equipment supports such resolutions:

In the window that opens, on the "Monitor" tab, select the maximum supported frequency, this will speed up the update and reduce screen flickering:

The monitor connection setup is complete. Now you need to decide how the image will be displayed. There are four different options available to us on the menu:

  • the first will allow you to output a copy of the image to the TV
  • the second extends the desktop to both devices, the mouse moves over them as if the desktop was one-piece
  • the third and fourth options display the image on one of the devices

It is worth recommending to stop at option number two - "expand these screens". In this case, you can easily transfer the video player window to the TV screen. Although the desktop is shared, in full screen mode, the video will only be displayed on the screen where the player window is located.

This option will allow you to simultaneously watch movies and work on the computer behind the monitor. Do not forget to just select the main device, on the desktop of which the system panel with the “start” button will be displayed:

However, I do not think that this device will be a TV.

By the way, you can quickly switch from one image display mode to another using the Win / P key combination - after pressing them, a quick switch menu will appear on the main screen:

Here you will see exactly the same four options, but with slightly different names. You can even choose one of them blindly (all of a sudden, your TV is selected as the main one, and you turned it off) - using the left / right arrows and the “Enter” key.

Today, you can buy any TV in the store, from the budget to the most prestigious model, but not everyone can afford it even when the old TV ordered to live a long time. There is a simple way out: use a computer display. You can buy a new one (in stores it costs less than a TV set) or use an unnecessary old one. It remains only to find out how to make a TV out of a monitor.

When monitors with an LCD screen came into fashion, the old ones with cathode-ray tubes were no longer needed, but the zealous owners hid them for the time being - now the moment has come when you can give such an old product a second life. To the question of how to make a TV set from an old monitor, there is a simple answer: it is necessary to remove the control unit, the video card from its bowels, and purchase the necessary parts for re-equipment in a special store. The main thing is to have VGA input- without this important detail, it is impossible to use a monitor as a TV, and this does not cause problems, because all monitors of the old guard have such a port for connecting the system unit.

If you do not understand anything about the diagrams and options for connecting television equipment, then you will not be able to make a TV out of a monitor on your own, here you need certain knowledge and skills.

For the future product, you need to purchase the following parts and assemblies:

  1. The most important functional device of any TV is chromaticity module: Image quality depends on its reliable performance - color or black and white.
  2. TV radio channel, its main purpose is to select from all intermediate frequency signals only the necessary ones (video and sound).
  3. Control block, which is responsible for configuring and controlling the operation of the product in manual or remote mode.

To make a TV with our own hands, we install new nodes in the body of the product, connect them with a wire to the necessary modules. Perhaps, to enhance the quality, it will be necessary to solder several resistors, after which a comprehensive check should be carried out - and the modified device can be used as a TV.

Connecting an LCD Monitor

Today, many users have abandoned a stationary computer, and switched to more convenient laptops, so a liquid crystal, still not at all old and perfectly functioning monitor, is quite useful for using it as a TV.

You will have to walk around special radio markets for some time, where spare units, parts and accessories are sold in order to buy:

  • TV tuner;
  • splitter and cable for connecting digital TV;
  • antenna and wire for connecting it, if you are using a signal from a city television network.

Before you go to the store, you should familiarize yourself with, and. A new product will need to be connected to your home electrical outlet. two sockets at least one for the tuner and one for the monitor itself. On the back side, we fix the tuner and its power supply, connect the antenna wire, plug in the cord to activate the display. That's all the wisdom on how to make a TV out of a monitor with your own hands.

The tuner already has built-in speaker, so you can get by with its sound, but music lovers should connect external acoustics to expand the transmission range of the sound row. This could be a home theater system or speakers from. The tuner picks up signals perfectly, but unlike digital TV, there is no HD quality - this is the only drawback. All settings are in English, but they are intuitive.

We must not forget that LCD products transmit a clearer picture, where the image quality is much higher than that of CRT monitors, so various interference will be seen better.

Disadvantages of LCD monitors when watching videos

We have explained how to make an LCD monitor a TV, but we must take into account the following points:

  • signal response time;
  • viewing angle;
  • contrast and illumination;
  • depth of black.

It is common for a computer display longer response time to the signal and smaller viewing angle, but for a TV - this is nonsense, therefore they are not relevant for computer monitors. In this case, the viewer should sit strictly opposite the new home product, at a right angle - otherwise black spots will appear, the picture will be distorted. Quality viewing is guaranteed if you watch directly on TV. If the depth of black is insufficient, all impressions will be ruined, especially in twilight, and if the contrast is overestimated on the screen, the viewer will see a flat image.

These are the negative consequences await you if the LCD monitor is used as another TV, and during the connection, the above recommendations are not taken into account.

Most of the manufactured tuners have VGA input, and monitors - DVI and VGA, it is necessary to take into account their support of such TV parameters as PAL and SECAM.

We connect a digital receiver

TV receiver DVB-T2 standard can receive any digital programs throughout the territory of the Russian Federation, and it catches programs using an ordinary indoor antenna, which can be obtained from the rest of the coaxial cable. We need to connect the HDMI output of the receiver to the VGA input of the monitor, so we buy a converter or adapter for a stable connection that does not require a separate connection. It remains to connect the speakers from the computer to the output of the converter or digital receiver.

With the help of the converter, you can connect to the monitor and other types of equipment for work and entertainment: laptop, game console, HD-players and the like.

Home craftsmen are interested in the monetary issue - the price of a digital receiver starts from a thousand rubles, a converter costs 250 rubles, and you can take speakers from a stationary PC, so everything will not cost so much.

Which monitors are better

Foreign experts have tested many monitors from different manufacturers for computers in order to come to a verdict whether they can be used after modification as a TV. In the first place is the concern from South Korea Samsung: monitors are quite easy to convert into TV, they look perfect in a new role - mainly models with a screen of 17 and 19 inches.

The second place was shared by Sony and LG, which offer users updated samples of monitors, their unique design. You can use products from other manufacturers with less loud names, but the quality will be correspondingly lower.

When we independently make a TV from a monitor, experts advise paying special attention to - if it is high, then it will be great to show a homemade TV.

Symbiosis of PC and TV

In principle, you can not think about how to make a TV from a monitor, but combine the functions of a computer and TV using a special tuner stand-alone type or USB. The latter is intended for direct connection to a laptop. The stand-alone option is the latest development, it is installed between both products, which allows you to view various TV programs in full screen. This symbiosis allows you to work quietly on a laptop and watch programs of interest on TV in a small window.

In addition, they are equipped with various audio outputs and inputs so that you can connect additional home appliances such as.

To help amateur craftsmen when remaking a monitor, here is the following video:

Laptops break down and become obsolete, but some of the components in them remain working and can still serve. If the laptop screen is working properly, it can be removed from the case and turned into a monitor. How to do it?

Disconnect the laptop from the power supply and remove the battery (if it is external and not installed inside the case).

Disassemble the case. Opening of different laptop models is carried out in different ways, but on the whole there is nothing difficult in this: you need to unscrew all the bolts (including those hidden, for example, behind the DVB-drive) and carefully open the lid. Then dismantle the elements that prevent you from reaching the panel and unscrew its fasteners. Never touch boards, microcircuits or wires. Static electricity can destroy components that are still working and may be useful.

Connect the matrix to a universal LDC controller - for example, LA.MV29.P or equivalent. You can buy it in online stores (AliExpress, Banggood, etc.)

This controller is powered by a 12-volt adapter and supports almost all LCD models. The image can be fed to the controller from a computer, laptop or tablet through the HDMI, VGA or AV port, the supported resolution is up to 1920 × 1200 pixels. In addition, this card can serve as a TV tuner and display TV channels. The package includes a remote control and an infrared sensor.

Before placing an order, it is worth informing the seller about the model of your matrix, so that he picks up a controller that is guaranteed to suit you. An important point: you must find out with what voltage the matrix works, this will be required for the correct pinout of the loop. View the model on the back of the die, go to datasheet4u, find that model and see its specs. Move the jumper on the universal controller to the appropriate position: 3.3, 5 or 12 volts. Be extremely careful: if you set the voltage higher than required, the matrix controller may burn out.

The controller will need to be flashed. To do this, copy the lamv29.bin file from this archive to the root of the flash drive, insert it into the USB port of the included controller, wait a minute, turn off the power, disconnect the flash drive, turn on the controller again and check if the matrix is working correctly. In the menu, you can change the language from Chinese to Russian.

To configure the automatic switching on of the matrix when power is applied, go to the settings and enter 1147 on the remote control. The service menu will open. Go to the Advanced Setting sub-item and set the AC on Mode option to On.

The controller can be hidden in some kind of case or simply glued to the back of the matrix. As a case for the matrix, you can use a laptop or monitor case. Of course, you can leave it as it is, although such a design will not look very aesthetically pleasing. If you are using a matrix without a housing, it can be installed in a tablet holder with adjustable tilt angle.
