The computer does not see the connected TV via hdmi. Why HDMI does not work: an algorithm for solving the problem

Having decided to take a break from everyday worries, you connect a turntable to your TV to watch your favorite movie or a set-top box to play a long-awaited project. But your plans are ruined by the unpleasant fact that after the procedure you have performed according to all the requirements, the newly connected device is simply not displayed in the TV menu. And if you are using a working technique, a reliable signal source and a new cable, then the question arises: why the TV does not see HDMI? There may be no reasons for this problem, so we will consider each of them in detail.

Check cable functionality

In the modern world, nothing is perfect, so even a new thing may not meet the required quality standards. Even HDMI cables from manufacturers in the premium segment of the market are not immune to the problem of factory defects. In addition, the cable may become unusable due to improper storage, inaccurate transportation, or contrary to the requirements of operation.

Another reason for the absence of a signal may be that when displaying a picture from a computer, the user did not take care of additional power supply to the video card. Some graphics adapters are equipped with 6-pin or 8-pin connectors to which cables from the PSU are connected. If most of the time the card does not work at maximum power, then the lack of additional power will not interfere with comfortable use. However, it is enough to increase the load on the adapter, and it will no longer be able to cope with its task without increasing power consumption.

Check the computer's mode of operation with an external monitor

If you are the only monitor, then it should be detected automatically. But when using this device as a second or third display, additional configuration may be required. For example, in Windows operating systems, the easiest way to do this operation is by pressing the combination "Win + P" or the "Fn" button and the corresponding key for selecting a projection method on a number of function keys. As a result, a window or a list will open in front of you, allowing you to choose one of the ways to display the picture:

  • Only on the computer screen.
  • On PC and TV (duplication).
  • To computer and TV (extension).
  • Only on the TV display.

With the first and fourth options, everything is clear: displaying a picture on a PC or TV, respectively. The second item allows you to display on the TV the same image that you currently see on the computer. This is useful when you are giving presentations to students or colleagues, or performing similar tasks. Through the extension, in turn, you can get an additional screen for displaying information on it, which will allow you to simultaneously view more information and process several documents.

The extension is also useful if your TV is not equipped with Wi-Fi, but you want to immediately display a movie or cartoon for children. Since HDMI also supports audio transmission, you can comfortably work at your computer while your loved ones are enjoying a movie. However, you need to understand that when you output audio to a TV, you will not be able to listen to music and watch videos on your computer.

Make sure you have up-to-date drivers

Even if you've recently updated your graphics card driver, it's still worth checking to see if the GPU and system logic manufacturer has released an update. As in the case of cables, no one is immune from errors in this case, so the version of the driver installed on your computer may contain problems that have already been fixed in the update. The same goes for the Smart TV system in the TV, an update of which can also help to connect a PC or other device via HDMI.

Make sure the outputs are working

The problem of broken connectors can be relevant not only for TVs, but also for laptops and computers. In order to check whether the outputs of the device connected to the TV are functioning, you need to carry out exactly the same procedures as described above. You can also try to connect another device to the TV using the same port. If you are connecting a PC and a TV, then check if the correct output is selected. Often times, users make the mistake of connecting the HDMI cable not to the connectors on the graphics adapter, but to the outputs on the motherboard.

Set the conditions for enabling sleep mode

If you are using a laptop to display images on a TV, then when you close its lid, the image automatically switches to the "TV display only" display mode, which will allow you not to worry about the need for manual switching.

However, many laptops have a feature that automatically enters sleep mode when the lid is closed and wakes up when the lid is opened. If your system uses just such settings, then you need to change them, preventing the computer from going to sleep.

Output

Very often, the cause of many technical problems lies on the surface. Simple inattention when choosing an input, using a low-quality Chinese cable and other factors can be the reason why the TV does not see HDMI. Using the above recommendations, you can easily find the cause of the problem and can easily fix it.

Remember that in order to avoid equipment breakdowns, before connecting HDMI, you need to turn off TV and computer from the network. Hot plugging can break your computer, burn your processor. Also make sure the HDMI input is working properly, and that the input and cord pins are not clogged or bent. One more problem - no additional power supply to the video card. But working through HDMI requires a lot of energy.

First of all, you need to check if it is configured correctly on your computer work with an external monitor... If, for example, you have a stationary computer and a TV is the only connected image display device, everything will work out automatically. You just need to plug the cord into the input, and use the TV like a regular computer monitor. If not, there are a number of steps to take.

Laptops have a special hotkey combination... On mine, for example, it's F8. There should be two screens drawn there. Just press Fn and F8 and everything will start working. In another case, we click on an empty space on the desktop with the right mouse button and select “ Screen resolution". Then - we find the item " Duplicating screen". You can also make an extended desktop here, thanks to which you can, for example, turn on a movie on the TV, transfer the player to the second desktop, and use social networks on a laptop.

What you should pay attention to

May be wrong source selected on the TV. In this case, there is nothing surprising. To fix this, we take the remote control and look for a button on it called "Source", "Input" or "HDMI". In the menu that opens, select HDMI. The name may contain a number or something like that. For example, as in the screenshot: HDMI 1, HDMI 2. There may be several HDMI options. In this case, try each one until it starts working.

An important role is played by video card driver... These are programs that help devices work, they need to be updated on time. In order to update them, you can, for example, download the official manufacturer's program and check the relevance. Or download a program that can automatically update all drivers on your computer, for example: Driver booster or Driverpack solution. There is also a third way. Click on "My Computer", select " Device Manager", Find the video card there, right-click and go to the" Intelligence».

Here, in the dropdown line, we select “ Equipment ID", Copy the very first line and paste it into the search engine. Then we look for the most up-to-date helper programs suitable for your version of Windows and install it. Or you can insert this combination of numbers and letters on a special driver search site. For example, devid.info or driverpack solution site. If there is an installer file in the folder, everything is simple. If not, we go back to the device properties to the " Drivers"And click on" to renew". Now it remains to enter the path to the folder with our drivers and wait for the installation to complete.

We do not exclude the possibility that the computer is simply infected with viruses... Therefore, check it with an antivirus with an up-to-date virus database.

Having an LCD TV or Plasma, you are probably wondering how to connect your TV to your computer via HDMI. At first glance, this is easy to do, but nevertheless, people often have questions, and the connection itself causes difficulties. In this article, we will tell you step by step how to get it right.

What cables are required?

It should be borne in mind that using expensive HDMI cables is not at all necessary and the most common one will do for us. But please note that if you are the lucky owner of a TV with support for 3D mode and plan to watch the corresponding content, you will need a cable with support for HDMI version 1.4 or higher.

Connect step by step

So, first let's find the HDMI connector on your TV. It is located either on the side or back wall, but it looks like the picture below:

If your TV has more than one HDMI connector, then we are interested in the one located in the "Input" section and marked with the number "1".

We are looking for the same connector on the back of your computer. It is usually located among the video card connectors. If your computer has a built-in video chip, then the HDMI connector we need will be located on the motherboard connector strip.

IMPORTANT: do not mix up or plug the cable into the “Output” connector, it may cause damage or burnout. All work should be carried out only in the switched off state of the computer and the TV, with the mains power cables unplugged from the socket!

Sometimes it happens that a computer or TV does not have an HDMI connector. In this case, you can use an adapter from DVI to HDMI to connect the TV to a computer, but with this connection you will have to supply the sound separately and the description of this method is beyond the scope of this article.

So, we insert one end of the cable into the TV connector, the other into the computer connector. We check that they both fit snugly and are inserted all the way.

The first step has been taken, we proceed to further actions.

Setting the image output via HDMI

We turn on the TV and computer.

After loading Windows, right-click on the desktop and select "Screen Resolution" in the context menu list. Windows by default sets the maximum supported resolution, but you need to check if it is set correctly.

For example, if your TV is "Full HD", then 1920 × 1080 would be optimal for it. If the TV is "HD Ready", then it corresponds to a resolution of 1366 × 768. Thus, by connecting a TV to a computer via HDMI, we can separately and independently of each other adjust the parameters of the TV and the monitor. By choosing the item "Duplicate these screens", you clone the image of the monitor to the TV and thereby make it the same. If you choose Expand These Screens, making the monitor the primary, then you expand the desktop to the TV, as shown in the picture. The choice of display method on the TV depends on your preference.

Next, click on "Advanced options" and set the refresh rate of the screen. Please note that if you connect the TV to your computer via HDMI, it may appear under a different name such as “Generic PnP Monitor”. This is not a big deal, because Windows considers all connected display devices to be monitors. We select your TV and set “True Color (32 bit)” in the “Color quality” field, and at least 60 Hz in the “Screen refresh rate”. In the future, you can experiment with this parameter if you see artifacts or "breaks" in the image displayed on the TV in a dynamic picture. In this case, it would be better to specify 60Hz, but if your TV initially supports 100Hz, then it is better to set the same amount right away, without experimenting.

After the image is adjusted, proceed to adjusting the sound.

Outputting sound to TV via HDMI

First of all, make sure that you have a fresh video card driver installed that contains all the necessary components to output sound from your computer to your TV via HDMI. The easiest way to check this is by clicking on the speaker icon next to the clock in the taskbar. If you see another speaker next to the speaker volume slider called something like "HDMI Digital Audio Device", then everything is in order.

Otherwise, go to "Device Manager" (Start -> Control Panel -> All Elements -> Device Manager) and select "Sound, game and video devices". At this point, there must be a device with the same name as highlighted in the figure. If it is missing, then you will have to reinstall or update the video card driver.

In this case, a situation may arise when everything is connected and configured correctly, but there is still no sound. This is due to the fact that for different manufacturers, not all TV models support sound reception at all input connectors. In this case, you can try to connect the cable to the adjacent HDMI connector of the TV, but in compliance with the safety requirements specified at the beginning of the article.

Common connection problems

Why can't the TV see the computer via HDMI?

Possible causes and remedies:

  1. Defective HDMI cable. The cable needs to be replaced.
  2. Wrong input source selected. Check the TV menu for the correct input. For example, you plugged the cable into the "HDMI-1" connector, and "HDMI-2" or "Component" was selected.
  3. Defective or damaged HDMI input. It is necessary to contact the service center or TV technician.

Why can't my computer see the HDMI cable from my TV?

We hope this article was useful to you and helped you solve the issue of how to connect a TV to a computer via HDMI.

Today, any user using an HDMI cable can, as well as a desktop computer, to a flat-screen LCD TV, and then enjoy an expanded image. Such a connection is not always successful: for example, it can. But there are times when the computer does not see the TV connected via HDMI at all, although you just purchased the wire in the store, where it was tested in various ways. There are many reasons for the cable malfunctioning, and the search for the true problem must be done consistently.

What should be done if the TV cannot see the laptop via HDMI? Video cards of all modern products support such a connection: HDMI is installed on the TV on almost every model. If the laptop was connected in accordance with all the rules, but still there is no image, then we connect the laptop to the TV, while sequentially checking all possible problems.

Cable check

Not a single product, even the most reliable brand, is immune from factory defects, especially when assembled by hand. When buying, the image quality and sound are checked, but they never check specific connectors and connection jacks on the TV - at best, they make sure they are available, and even then not all buyers. It often happens that the cable itself does not work, although it has not been used for so long. It is necessary to connect the same cable, but to another device, if it functions normally, then the reason that the computer does not see the TV lies in the latter. It is necessary to diagnose the TV in order to recognize similar signals.

Checking the signal source

On the remote control (RC), press the button to select the external input option. The specific model of the product depends on which button on the TV remote control you need to press: “source”, “input” or “HDMI” (LG, Sony or Samsung). After pressing, a menu appears on the screen with detailed list of active inputs... We select and confirm by pressing OK or Enter, it is the desired input, into which the cable from the laptop was previously connected.

Working with the monitor

If the laptop does not see the TV when multiple monitors are connected at the same time, then it is necessary to carry out additional settings... These simple manipulations can be performed by any user without special education:

  • hover the cursor over any free space on the desktop;
  • for the menu to appear, click on the right mouse button;
  • we find the section "screen resolution" - Windows 7, and if there is WindowsXP, then "graphic characteristics";
  • then you need to choose an acceptable option to duplicate the screen.

Any laptop has a specific F4 key, if you press it together with the Fm button (located to the right of Crtl) repeatedly, you can select the desired option for the external screen - this is how the computer starts to see the TV.

Graphics card and drivers

Open the "Device Manager" of your laptop to check the driver versions of the installed video card. Outdated software is the main reason why the TV does not see the laptop. In this case, you need to go to the manufacturer's website, where you can download new "firewood" - the video card will be updated, you can establish the required connection.

Perhaps the fault lies in the fact that the operating system was infected with viruses or there was an unauthorized entry of malware. Using a powerful antivirus (computer protection program) capable of finding all spyware of any level, we thoroughly scan your computer and reconnect.

Some experts strongly advise you to check the version for your Smart TV platform: sometimes a laptop cannot be connected via HDMI for this very reason. and maybe the problem will go away.

Connection port malfunction

Any connector can have mechanical damage or burn out during a power surge, which are not uncommon in our electrical networks. Experienced craftsmen advise connecting the HDMI cable when disconnected devices, even the antenna cable is recommended to be disconnected for this time.

There is also such a very rare reason why the TV does not see HDMI: it simply does not have additional power on the video card, and without this the connection will not work.

All details and connection options can be viewed using this video:

Troubleshooting Algorithm

If you know the reason why there is no image on the TV screen, then the elimination of various violations is already a solvable task. This is how the approximate procedure for eliminating the detected faults looks like:

  1. Check the quality of the connection, visually check the external condition of each connector or connecting cables, if the laptop stopped seeing the TV.
  2. Then the configuration of the computer systems is checked: check what selection was made in the menu items responsible for connecting devices.
  3. Check for updated graphics card drivers.
  4. In some cases, it doesn't hurt to check the settings of the video card itself once again.
  5. Re-scan the entire computer with a Smart Scan to ensure no malware.
  6. Check visually the condition of the multimedia ports, their proper operation - a positive result will be immediately visible when connected to another device, for example,.

If you have tried your best and the laptop still has no signal to the TV, try other connections. Use the rule of thumb when all existing connection methods are used consistently. The due diligence process will look like this:

  • first, we determine the available connections and connectors that are used by our selected household appliances;
  • disconnect TV and laptop from the network;
  • we connect the laptop to the TV using a proven HDMI cable;
  • turn on the TV, setting up its connection to the computer using the remote control;
  • we activate the laptop, if the signal passes, then a picture should be displayed on the TV screen, similar to the loading of the operating system;
  • no signal - go to the "Device Manager" section, find out what active types of connection are available;

  • if it is possible to install VGA connection, then you need to connect a similar cable to the products;
  • then we carry out similar actions as with HDMI, only press the "VGA" button on the remote control;
  • if you decide to make a connection via DVI, then we connect the cable to the corresponding connectors, select the same option in the TV settings.

If the technician did not start working together, the reason lies in an internal breakdown, which can only be diagnosed and eliminated by a master. Of course, if you have knowledge of the electronic stuffing of devices, you can give it a try.

In the article "" I gave detailed instructions on how to do this, but when I tried to do the same on another computer with two operating systems installed (Windows 7 and Windows 10), I immediately encountered the fact that the logo first appeared when booting dozens, and then the screen darkened and I could not do anything.

After a couple of hours of trial and error, it became clear that it was necessary to somehow first configure the video card, and then move on. And in order for the screen not to darken, you must first disconnect the HDMI cable. But can the graphics card be configured to detect the TV when the HDMI cable is disconnected? It turned out that you can.

How to set up a video cardNvidia

Before repeating everything that is described below, read the article to the end, in order to avoid unnecessary body movements and damage to your nerves.

I unplugged the HDMI cable and booted up my computer.

You can disconnect and connect the HDMI cable only when you completely disconnect (plug the socket from the socket) one of the devices, either a TV or a computer. Otherwise, you risk burning the video card.

After loading the operating system, I right-clicked on the desktop and selected the item “ Control PanelNVIDIA».

In the opened NVIDIA Control Panel window, on the right we find the item " Installing multiple displays", And if only the name of the monitor is displayed on the right, and the TV has not been identified, then below click on the link" No display required ...».

A small window will open “ No display detection"And in the block" TV detection"Put a tick in front of the entry" Detect TVs on startup", And click" OK».

We close the video card control panel and turn off the computer.

If you have several operating systems and they are located on different hard drives, then it is better to physically disconnect the second hard drive, where we have not yet configured the video card. And after fully configuring the first operating system, disconnect the first hard drive (I have Windows 10 on it), and connect the second hard drive (I have Windows 7 on it). But you can try not to disconnect the drives.

After turning off the computer, connect the HDMI cable to the computer again. Check that the TV cable is also connected to the HDMI connector. Read about how to do this in the article.

After all the manipulations, do not forget to turn on both the computer and the TV.

Setting up the computer desktop through the TV

After rebooting, everything repeated again for me, and I did not see either the boot menu or the desktop. Then I pressed the button on the TV remote control " Source”And selected HDMI mode on the TV.

If everything is done correctly, then a picture from your computer should appear on your TV. I have a menu for selecting the operating system. I chose the system on which I just configured the video card, i.e. Windows 10.

A desktop appeared, but completely clean. I clicked on it with the right mouse button and selected the item " Screen options».

In the window " Options»It can be seen that the monitor and the TV have been determined. We go down below and in the block " Multiple displays"Set" Duplicate these screens».

Now the image on the monitor and TV should be the same. Everything appeared on my TV and on my computer.

And so that when the computer boots up, the monitor no longer darkens, I had to do the same in the second system - Windows 7. Now from any system I can connect to the TV and enjoy watching my favorite movies directly from YouTube.

Possible problems when connecting the TV to the computer

  • Defective cableHDMI... Sometimes it happens. Carefully feel the cable for kinks or damage.
  • Connector does not workHDMI on TV... If there is another HDMI connector, then try connecting the cable to it.
  • Not installed or old video card driver. Some users do not even know that they have not loaded the drivers for the video card, because the system has automatically installed its most suitable driver. This can usually be determined by the fact that in Device manager there is no name for your video card and when you select a resolution for the monitor, the slider does not move.

  • The video card does not "see" the TV... Configure it as described above.
  • The operating system has set the desktop to extended mode by default, and therefore the desktop appears blank. Read about it above.

If you had similar problems, then describe them in the comments. Perhaps it will be useful to someone.
