Two years ago, there was a major embarrassment in the history of the Samsung mobile division: the Galaxy Note 7 turned out to be a ticking time bomb, so it was quickly removed from sale. That story ended not only with humiliating kneeling apologies, but also with a grandiose work on the mistakes - the neat and stylish Galaxy S8 made us forget about the disaster with explosive flagships.
That phone was praised even by those who previously considered Koreans tasteless in terms of design. Against the background of the archaic iPhone 7, the Galaxy S8 looked like a device from the future - thanks to thin frames, an “infinite” curved display and an OLED matrix.
True, after this local triumph, Samsung relaxed again and presented a frankly passable and boring Galaxy S9. The public reacted to it quite unequivocally: "It's great that the S8 is now cheaper." Stores even had to artificially slow down the G8 interface so that when comparing models, buyers would choose a newer and more expensive one.
As a result, 2018 was left for Apple. While Samsung bosses were studying the sad financial calculations and reading news with headlines like "Galaxy S9 sells worse than Galaxy S3", the whole world copied the iPhone X cutout. In parallel, two more holidays happened in Cupertino at once: first, the average price of one smartphone jumped to $ 700 (crazy level), and then the company broke through the capitalization of one trillion dollars.
Now the Koreans are forced to respond. Against the backdrop of the release of the iPhone XS and iPhone XR, insiders about the Galaxy S10 for some reason went into the shadows, but they definitely cannot be neglected. There is reason to believe that this gadget will become no less resonant than the Galaxy S8 - at least all preliminary information points to the gigantic potential of this model.
Below are five main facts about the anniversary, tenth, Galaxy.
1. Apparently, the smartphone will debut in January. Samsung is forced to postpone the announcement in order to quickly respond to a pack of new smartphones from Apple. Previously, Koreans steadily rolled out their flagships at the end of winter or early spring. The conclusion is very simple: Asians are now eager to demonstrate a revolutionary model.
2. The main feature of the Galaxy S10 is the disappearing front camera. It will be sewn directly into the display - the module will be noticeable only in those moments when the user starts the selfie mode. This has never been on the market before. For example, the Chinese, who want to hide the camera, put it inside the case and install a mechanism that quickly pushes the lens out. Samsung's solution is much more technological and elegant.
3. The Galaxy S10 will not have a so-called chin, that is, a bottom indent. Now it is available on all models except the iPhone X. The reason is elementary: to destroy this area, you need to order an expensive curved screen. The Chinese do not see the point in this, but the Koreans saw it, who clearly set themselves the task of releasing a completely frameless flagship. No unibrows, no wasted space - just a display and nothing else. Again, the Galaxy S8 and iPhone 7 story may repeat itself: the iPhone XS's notch will seem antediluvian next to the perfectly bezel-less S10.
4. According to insiders, the Galaxy S10 will be released in three variations: budget, standard and premium. The first two are not very interesting, but the third is a catalog of elite specifications. First, there will be a lightning-fast fingerprint scanner right below the display (another tech that Apple hasn't succumbed to). Secondly, the Koreans will install a triple main camera module in the coolest S10 - like in Huawei P20 Pro. It seems that the main task of Samsung managers is to break all competitors in the authoritative Dx0Mark rating with a margin.
5. The last point is about the colors of the cases. Now in Asia, smartphones with gradient back covers, like the Honor 10, are in the wildest demand. Apple missed this trend (or considered it tasteless), but Samsung will definitely (according to leaks) release at least one S10 modification in a mega-bright version.
Why can a plan fail?
And in terms of camera, design, and exclusive features, the Galaxy S10 will look much more preferable than boring and expensive Apple news. The only question is how well it will turn out to be implemented. On paper, the S10's specs are impressive, but in reality, flaws can pop up in the most unexpected places. Suffice it to recall previous Samsung flagships:
1.Galaxy S8- was good for almost everyone, but the Koreans screwed up with the fingerprint scanner. At first, they didn’t plan to put it there at all (they thought that they would get by with a face recognizer), and then they put it in the most inconvenient place - on the side of the camera. As a result, users were annoyed by the fact that they got their finger anywhere except the sensor. Samsung's arrogance is to blame here - apparently, they decided that since they offer four different unlock methods, it doesn't matter how well they work.
The first rumors about the new Samsung Galaxy S10 appeared on the network six to seven months before the start of 2019. If you believe the leaks, we are waiting for the most unexpected flagship from the South Korean company in the last couple of years. In fact, the manufacturer is ready to completely “reformat” the top Galaxy S line.
Representatives of Samsung itself are still rather evasive in commenting on the appearance and capabilities of the future Galaxy S10. For example, Won Oh Hyun, the CEO of the corporation, made a statement according to which the smartphone will receive "very important" changes in terms of design. But what exactly - did not specify.
Here it should be remembered that the current Galaxy S9 and the previous S8 are similar to each other almost like twin brothers. Similarly, the Galaxy S6 and S7 were not much different from each other. From this we can conclude that the Koreans update the design every two years, so in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S10, the time for change has definitely come.
Looking ahead, let's say that Samsung is preparing this time, in addition to the quite predictable "regular" Galaxy S10 and the large Galaxy S10 + (Plus), a third smartphone with a flat 5.8-inch screen. Here it should be remembered that all the flagships of the company, starting with Note 7, had a display curved at the edges.
Much more innovation is expected in technical terms. Firstly, it is the ability to connect to fifth-generation networks. Secondly, work with faster LPDDR5 RAM. Thirdly, support for high-speed UFS 3.0 memory. Fourth, the fingerprint scanner built into the display.
However, let's not stretch the introduction and run far ahead.
If everything goes according to the previously planned plan, then the presentation of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and other new products of the company should take place on February 24, 2019 on the "zero" day of the international exhibition Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019 - "Mobile World Congress") in Barcelona.
The exhibition hall of the Mobile World Congress is a place where many novelties in the market of modern gadgets are presented every year.
There, at MWC 2019, there will be an opportunity to feel the device “live” at the official Samsung stand. The start of accepting applications for pre-order is expected the very next day after the announcement, however, the release of the smartphone to the markets of different countries may be extended (the Koreans, unlike Apple, bring their new models to the market in stages).
Positioning and price
As noted in the introduction, Samsung is preparing three modifications of the Samsung Galaxy S10 this time. Of course, it is not a fact that it is in this composition that they will enter the market. Say, in 2016, the company developed a version of the Galaxy Note 7 with a flat screen, but it did not go into production.
Here, many will remember the sad story of the seventh Note, which was preparing for release with great fanfare. Moreover, at the very beginning, this model scattered at such a speed that even the company itself did not count on. Alas, this success was destined to end due to problems with the battery, which could spontaneously explode.
As a result, Samsung was forced to recall the entire circulation of the unsuccessful Note 7 and suffer heavy costs, both financial and reputational. Ultimately, the smartphone did resurrect literally like a phoenix from the ashes as the Galaxy Note FE, but that was a completely different story.

- The simplest Galaxy S10R (Retro) with a 5.8-inch flat screen and a single main camera. The very name Samsung Galaxy S10R first appeared in the publication of the online publication Slashgear ().
- Actually Galaxy S10 with a curved display of the same diagonal and a dual main camera.
- The largest and most expensive in the Galaxy S10 Plus series, the screen size of which will be as much as 6.44 inches. And he will also have a triple (!) Main camera and a double front camera.
Nothing like this approach? If not, take a look at three 2018 Apple iPhones unveiled on September 12: the "budget" XR, the standard XS, and the extra-large XS Max. We won't be surprised if Samsung copies this idea almost 1:1 (as it once did with the Galaxy S6 and S6+).
The question of cost remains. The easiest way to "predict" the price of the basic version of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Most likely, in the US, this smartphone will cost from $ 999 when purchased without a contract with a mobile operator. The Galaxy S10R variant can cost as little as $749, while the Plus goes for as much as $1,099 or so.
Of course, these are all just assumptions. How it will actually be - we will find out no earlier than February 2019. It should be noted that the stakes for Samsung are quite high now, as sales of the "ninth galaxy" turned out to be unexpectedly low (although this was quite predictable in the absence of qualitative differences from its predecessor).
Design and ergonomics
The data at our disposal is not yet enough to completely recreate the appearance of the Samsung Galaxy S10. Presumably, the screen of the smartphone will be extended, the aspect ratio will be 9 to 19 with a resolution of Wide QHD + 1440 × 3040 pixels. In this case, the rectangular shape without cutouts will be preserved.
There is a version that instead of a cutout, Samsung will make small holes for the camera and sensors, which will be invisible when using the standard theme. However, at the moment this is hard to believe (but everything can be).
Most likely, the Galaxy S10 will have a noticeable indent in the upper part under the front camera, but the rest of the frames around the display will be practically absent. This, by the way, is how most of the conceptual renders from third-party designers represent the smartphone.
Features Overview
Iron
Like most of its predecessors, the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be produced both on Samsung's own chipsets and on top solutions from Qualcomm. In the first case, this is Exynos 9820, in the second - Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (or 865).
Each of these chips is interesting in its own way. Let's start with the Exynos 9820. Samsung is one of the few companies in the world that itself produces mobile processors for smartphones. At the moment, its equipment allows printing 7-nanometer chips using EUV lithography.
In the future, this technology will make it relatively easy to switch to the 5 nm and even 3 nm process technology. For comparison, the Taiwanese TSMC, which produces chips for the American Qualcomm, is still using long-mastered DUV lithography, but the 7 nm process technology is its “ceiling”.
By reducing the distance between transistors and reducing their size, a thinner process technology, even without improvements in microprocessor architecture, improves performance while reducing power consumption. However, the advantages of the Samsung Exynos 9820 do not end there.
The new Exynos M4 custom cores promise excellent processing power. The Galaxy S10 prototype was able to score as much as 12,246 points in the multi-core test of the popular GeekBench benchmark and 4089 in the single-core test in the summer. The first result is much better than even the latest .
The ARM Mali-G76 graphics accelerator built into the Exynos 9820 deserves special mention. It is already used by Huawei's flagship chipset, which has shown excellent results in synthetic tests for 3D graphics.
What about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855? A test prototype of a device based on it has already appeared on Geekbench, but with a more modest result than in the case of Exynos. However, at this stage it is not possible to judge strictly about performance.
3697 points in the single-core GeekBench test and 10469 in the multi-core test. In our opinion, very good.
Rumor has it that in order to get a head start and push back competitors, Samsung will again agree with Qualcomm and reserve the entire first batch of future Snapdragon 855 for itself. Thus, for up to a month, its flagships can become the best, at least among smartphones based on Android.
According to RAM, the data is like this. Firstly, a transition to faster LPDDR5 chips is expected (but not a fact yet, especially since high-speed LPDDR4x RAM with a frequency of 2133 MHz has appeared against the current 1866 MHz). Secondly, all versions of the Samsung Galaxy S10 will finally receive 8 Gb of “RAM”.
The minimum amount of internal memory promises to be 128 Gb, as in the case of the already released Galaxy Note 9. At the same time, the “younger” Galaxy S10 Lite can also get a cheaper modification that has only 64 Gb of RAM. The maximum capacity of the internal "flash drive" will be 512 Gb.
Despite this increase, Samsung should keep the microSD card slot. As a result, the maximum amount of internal storage after installing an additional card will be up to 1 terabyte! At this point, we propose to finish the hardware questions and move on to other components.
Display
The design has been discussed above. Now let's talk about the specifications of the Galaxy S10 screen. For starters, it's based on a 5.8-inch 9:19 Super AMOLED display with a QHD+ resolution of 1440x3040 pixels.
Due to the absence of cutouts of the “monobrow” type, the entire “rectangle” is available to the user, except for the curved side faces. The latter have been an integral part of Samsung's flagships for the past two years. Outside, the Galaxy S10 screen is protected by impact-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 6.
Communication and communications
In 2019, the mass appearance of flagship smartphones with support for fifth-generation cellular networks, or 5G for short, is expected. This will increase the data exchange rate to 5 Gb / s, and even more in the future. However, it is too early to rejoice for two reasons.
Firstly, the actual implementation of 5G networks may be delayed for at least several years. Yes, in some countries they are already being tested with might and main, and in the USA, for example, Verizon has begun their commercial operation and even offers a special version of one of Motorola's smartphones with the corresponding module.
Secondly, Samsung itself is still skeptical about plans to switch to 5G in the foreseeable future. According to leaks, only a special modification of the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, intended for sale exclusively in South Korea, will receive support for fifth-generation networks.
In general, it is worth remembering that the transition to 4G at Samsung also took a long time. Thus, the Samsung Galaxy S3 (I9305), released in 2012, acquired LTE support, but even in 2014, among the company's flagships, there were modifications without support for fourth-generation networks, for example, the Galaxy Note 4 SM-N910H.
In terms of the number of SIM cards, there are three variants of the Galaxy S10 expected:
- Samsung Galaxy S10 Duos or Dual-SIM with two Nano-SIM SIM card slots (the second is shared with MicroSD)
- The “American” Samsung Galaxy S10 Duos, which has one SIM card slot in a physical Nano-SIM format, and the second in a virtual e-SIM (this technology is still allowed to be used in a few countries).
- "Single SIM" Samsung Galaxy S10 Single SIM, which will be sold in some countries.
If we talk about the rest of the communication interfaces of the "anniversary" Galaxy S, then there is not expected to be a big breakthrough. Well, perhaps there may be support for the third range of WiFi 60 GHz (IEEE 802.11ad) and Bluetooth 5.1, but this is more of an evolution, not a revolution.
cameras
As mentioned above, the Samsung Galaxy S10 itself should receive a dual main camera of the type that the Galaxy Note 9 already has: two modules with a resolution of 12 Mp, one of which will be equipped with wide-angle optics, and the second with a “telephoto” with a double zoom.
Of course, options such as support for DualPixel technology, optical image stabilization and phase detection autofocus. However, the main bet will not be placed on these options, which are quite standard for flagship smartphones in our time, but on “smart” algorithms using machine learning.
As for the large Galaxy S10 Plus, this device is tipped to have a triple main camera. At the moment, Samsung is already testing one on an example. Only if the latter has one main, one wide-angle and one "technical" module for measuring the depth of space, then the S10 + will be different.
It is assumed that it will be equipped with three 12-megapixel sensors with different optics. As a result, the camera of this smartphone will be able to shoot both portraits and landscapes, and zoom in on fairly distant objects. At the moment, even the “three-chamber” Huawei P20 Pro cannot do this.
From other rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S10: a double front camera with a resolution of 8 Mp + 8 Mp, autofocus and the ability to measure the depth of space. A separate case is the Galaxy S10 Lite, which, supposedly, will have two single cameras without unnecessary “bells and whistles”.
Sensors and biometrics
The Samsung Galaxy S10 will get a long-awaited feature that has been waiting for at least a year since the release of the Galaxy Note 8: an in-screen fingerprint scanner. Despite the fact that the Koreans announced the development of the corresponding module a long time ago, in the end the Chinese were ahead of them (see).
The face scanner should also undergo changes and become more accurate, reliable and secure. It is possible that for this Samsung wants to install a dual main camera, which would allow to obtain a three-dimensional model of the face for further processing using machine learning algorithms.
autonomy
Good news: in 2019, Samsung is finally going to increase the battery capacity of its flagships, which its management has been careful not to do since the release of the scandalous Galaxy Note 7, which exploded due to battery problems layouts).
Over the past couple of years, more advanced Li-Ion batteries have been developed, which, with the same dimensions, have a larger capacity. According to rumors, the basic modification of the Galaxy S10 will receive a 3600 mAh battery, and the Galaxy S10 Plus will get all 4200, like the Huawei Mate 20.
Other features: support for Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging (for Exynos-based models) or Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 (for Snapdragon), Qi and PMA fast wireless charging. Efficient energy-saving technologies allow the Galaxy S10 to work up to a day and a half on a single charge.
Software
At the moment, it is known that all modifications of the Samsung Galaxy S10 will be the first smartphones of the company that will run Android 9.0 Pie out of the box with the proprietary Experience 10.0 shell and the updated Bixby smart voice assistant.
The only thing that can "limp" at the same time is the quality of the firmware optimization. As a rule, with similar hardware, smartphones from OnePlus, Xiaomi and other Samsung competitors have been faster than the top-end Galaxy S for a couple of years. In general, the Koreans have something to work on.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 is likely to launch in early 2019. More specifically, we would bet on January, at CES 2019, there is already one rumor confirming this. The exhibition will be held from 8 to 11 January.
Otherwise, the smartphone could be released at MWC 2019 as Samsung announced the Galaxy S9 range at MWC 2018.

We haven't heard anything about the Samsung Galaxy S10 yet, but one thing that's been passed around by word of mouth is the in-screen fingerprint scanner.
The latest report claims that the manufacturer uses Qualcomm's ultrasonic scanner, and the fact that Vivo and Huawei have already shown their phones with similar scanners is in favor of the manufacturer, Samsung will not want to be left behind.
This also aligns with an earlier rumor that until the in-screen scanner is ready for release, it will be ready next year, making the Samsung Galaxy S10 a prime candidate.
Analytical speculation isn't always reliable, but it would make sense if Samsung wants to compete with the iPhone's three lenses.
Three cameras can be better than two.
We have also heard that Samsung may rebrand the range, releasing the next model as the Samsung Galaxy X rather than the Galaxy S10. It may seem unlikely, but Koh Dong-Jin, head of Samsung's mobile division, put it this way: "We thought about whether we should keep the S in the name or rely on the numbering system," so it's possible.
There are thoughts on what the Samsung Galaxy S10 will run on as well, as it could reportedly use unannounced (at least in some regions). It's said to be a 7nm chipset that's smaller and likely more powerful and efficient than what you'll find in most 2018 flagships.
It is believed that the 855 will be able to support theoretical download speeds up to 2 Gb / s, Galaxy S9 is limited to 1.2 Gb / s for now. However, don't expect to get close to these numbers in the real world. However, the update seems significant.
