The three main mobile communication companies in the Russian Federation are MTS, Megafon and Beeline. Other mobile operators in Russia are not so popular, and even such giants as TELE2, Rostelecom and Iota fall short of the leaders. The coverage of large mobile communication companies covers the entire territory of the Russian Federation. To identify subscribers, telephone numbers are used, and to determine the provider, prefixes of mobile operators are used. One company, especially if it is large, may own several indices. For example, the list for MTS covers a wide range of numbers.

What is a cell phone number

The ten-digit identifier, consisting of the provider code and a unique set of numbers, is the mobile phone number. In the international format, there is also a country index (for Russia +7). Def codes (operator identifiers) consist of three digits; numbering starts at nine. These are non-geographic telephone indexes, thanks to which it is possible to determine the subscriber's communication service provider, but firms no longer have a monopoly on them. You can switch, for example, from MTS to Megafon while maintaining the same set of numbers.

The transfer service is still available to a small number of people, and it is still possible to find out where the unknown is calling from. For the same reason, the number codes of Russian mobile operators remain in demand. Def are not considered secret information and are in open databases. They encode not only information about the provider, but also about the region in which the number is registered (within the range of regions, and not a specific city or district).

Cellular operator codes

The Federal Communications Agency (Rossvyaz) distributes the codes of mobile operators in Russia. A table with a list of def identifiers is posted on the official website of the institution and is regularly updated. It is available for download to any Internet user. For the convenience of the search, you can drive the code into a special form on the site and quickly find information about the corresponding network provider and region.

Russian cellular communication companies

The leaders of the list are Megafon, MTS and Beeline. In addition to them, there are other companies in the TOP. The most popular mobile operators in Russia:

  • Megaphone. The leading company covering all regions of the Russian Federation, as well as the republics of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Tajikistan. The subscriber base of MegaFon has more than 75 million active numbers. It is the leader in providing mobile Internet.

Russian mobile operator codes

A total of 57 identifiers are currently involved. The structure of the def code is as follows: 9, then one of the digits in the range from 0 to 9. This is how 9 two-digit indices are formed, each of them has a third number, also from 0 to 9. The codes 91x and 98x are reserved for the MTS mobile provider (where x is a number from the range from 0 to 9, see the table above). The regional distribution is as follows:

This provider uses the following codes: 90x, 93x, 95x, 98x, 99x. In the vast majority of regions, 958 indices are registered. 930, 933, 958, 980 are also often found. Most of the subscribers belong to the Central Federal District:

This is especially important if you want to call a stranger back. There are several ways to help you recognize the operator by phone number.

How to find out the country and operator by phone number

The standard capabilities of smartphones allow you to find out from which region the call came through without additional programs. However, this option does not work for all numbers and not every smartphone supports it. Therefore, you can use other options:

  1. Search online by phone number. This option is good because for it you do not need to determine the code yourself - just enter the phone number in a special window and you will receive complete information about it.
  2. Manual search. In stationery stores, diaries are sold in which the first or last pages are given over to reference information. With their help, you can determine from which country you were disturbed by a call. To use this method, you must correctly determine the code - these are the first 1-3 digits, excluding the "+" sign.

Of course, it is best to use the online method. When searching online, you do not need to independently select a code from a set of numbers. This service is absolutely free for you. The search form allows you to identify the carrier and find out other details about the number.

Phone apps to identify operator by number

Well, if the search form is not enough for you, then for smartphones, they work on different operating systems, a lot of applications have been created to help determine the numbers and the region where the call comes from. Not so long ago, Yandex created its own identifier that allows you to find out the organization from which the call came. But the functionality of this program is limited - if the company uses a third-party phone number, for example, the mobile of one of the managers, then you will not know who wants to contact you.

A good application can be called the Russian Operators utility. It allows you to determine when incoming and outgoing calls, which operator serves your interlocutor. The disadvantage of the program is that you will not be able to determine the country of the call. Databases are limited to our country.

More successful in terms of the amount of reference information is the Call Dispatcher application. His databases have collected information about Ukrainian, Belarusian and Abkhaz license plates. The functionality of the application allows you to:

  • determine the country of the interlocutor for an incoming or outgoing call;
  • displaying information about the telecom operator, country and city during a call from a mobile or fixed number;
  • placement of information about the subscriber in pop-up messages during a call;
  • the ability to change the display time of messages;
  • field for manual search in the directory;
  • an extensive database of numbers in Russia and neighboring countries;
  • identification of numbers written in international and local format;
  • integration with any Android shells;
  • work with different versions of operating systems, including obsolete ones;
  • correct work with third-party applications.

After installing this program, it is necessary to create the Call Dispatcher folder in the directory of the memory card, otherwise the databases will not be loaded. Only after creating the folder you need to start downloading the databases. If you do not download them, the utility will not work. Another small problem when using this software product is that not all operators and numbers are entered into the bases. But this nuisance rarely affects users, as the databases are regularly updated.

Other ways to identify a telecom operator

If you are sure that the call came to you from Russia (the number starts with the code +7), then it is enough to determine the telecom operator and the region where the SIM card is used. To do this, you can use different methods.

Manual information search

The most difficult way to determine the telecom operator is to use the code book. Each phone number, except for the country code, encrypts the operator's identifier in itself. In Russia, numbers in the range from 900 to 999 are used as it. To date, domestic operators have used 79 codes from this range, 21 more are in reserve.

Most of the identifiers were occupied by representatives of the "Big Three".

As you can see, even in this table, different operators have the same codes. The situation is no better for regional companies, which in most cases use the identifiers of larger telecom operators. For this reason, manual search for information provides only general information, and with code 902 it is completely useless.

We receive information about the country and the operator from our operator

Telecom operators provide the most accurate information about their subscribers. Since December 2013, a law has been in force in Russia on the preservation of a number when a client moves to another cellular company. In connection with it, confusion appears if a person tries to independently determine the operator by code. But you don't have to do it yourself. Telecom operators have provided the ability to determine the ownership of a subscriber number.

  1. Megafon was the first to launch this service. On his official website, he posted a form for checking the number, available to anyone. You need to enter the number without the country code - from 9.
  2. MTS lagged behind its competitors - it launched a paid verification service, available only to its customers. To check the number, you need to send a USSD request of the form: *111*916*number# - after entering the combination, press the call key. The phone number is entered without the country code, starting from 9. The request will cost you about 3 rubles (the cost depends on the region).
  3. Beeline offers two options for checking the ownership of a phone number: through the official website and USSD request. Through the site, everyone can find out about the ownership of the number, just enter the number, starting with the operator code. Next to the field for entering information, there is a window with the numbers of the verification captcha - it is read very simply. Enter the numbers you see in the field on the right. If you are a Beeline subscriber, then you can send a request like: *444*number#. Data must be entered starting from 9.
  4. Tele 2 also took care of cellular users. He posted on his website a lot of useful services, including in order to determine whether a subscriber number belongs to a particular operator. This service is located in the section dedicated to the transfer of subscribers to another operator while maintaining the number.

The disadvantage of this method is that some operators have a paid service. Another disadvantage is that it is not easy to find the verification form on the official website. In most cases, it is "hidden" in one of the sections in the information for subscribers.

Using e-wallets

If you have an electronic wallet, then you can use it to determine if the number belongs to a specific telecom operator. To do this, select the item "Deposit money to a mobile account" in the list of payments, and then enter the number. After this action, the name or logo of the operator will appear on the page. It is not necessary to make a payment.

This service is not perfect and does not work on all e-wallets. Some payment services did not provide the ability to display the names of the company servicing the subscriber. Such a service works properly only for Qiwi users.

The easiest way to find out subscriber data

We have already mentioned the last method above - these are online services for obtaining complete information about the subscriber. You can find out not only the telecom operator, but also the region where the SIM card was purchased. This will allow you to quickly navigate important issues: is it worth calling back a stranger, how much will a minute of communication cost, is it possible to make a call using only the included package of minutes of your tariff.

Most carriers now offer unlimited on-net calls. For this reason, it is very important to find out which company the prospective interlocutor uses. If the subscriber belongs to your mobile operator and is in the same region with you, then most often you can call without fear.

The advantage of an online database is that it has a user-friendly interface. You just need to enter the number and click the "Find" button. After refreshing the page, you will get the result in the form of a detailed report. A small drawback is that the information in the database is updated a little later than that of the operator. But every day the information is entered more quickly.


  • SIM card, number, tariff

      You can change the tariff

      • on the site: select a new tariff, click on the button "Switch to tariff" on the page;
      • in the MegaFon application or Personal Account.

      You can switch to any tariff, except for the archive one. The cost of the transition is indicated on the page of the selected tariff.

      When changing the tariff, the packages of minutes, SMS and Internet connected within the current tariff will “burn out” and will not be valid at the new tariff. The written-off subscription fee is not recalculated.

    • How to unblock a number?
      • If you run out of money on your account and the number is blocked, replenish your balance. The number is activated after the debt is repaid.
      • If you have not used the number for more than 90 days, it may be blocked. To restore the number, contact the MegaFon salon with your passport. If the number has not been transferred to another subscriber during this time, you will receive a new SIM card with the same number.
        Find out if it is possible to restore the number by sending a free SMS from a valid MegaFon SIM to. In the message, indicate the number you want to restore, the full name of the owner.

If the number has not been transferred to another person, it can be restored by filling out an application in the MegaFon salon.
