Chinese phones seduce with their relatively low prices and have almost all the functions that are present in their Euro-American counterparts. The same applies to the Chinese version of Nokia N9, for the firmware of which we will use the FlashTool program (version FlashTool 3.1044.00).

What do we need

Operating procedure

1. Let's decide on the version of the firmware:

- enter the version code;
- install the drivers for the cable, which usually comes with the drivers;
- download, unpack and run FlashTool;
- device manager will indicate the location where the driver was installed:

- click on Options and choose COM port.

- click on and select MTK_AllInOne_DA.bin.

- to download the firmware, click on Scatter File and select from the firmware wizard :

- again go to Options and select NFB, Pressing Operation Method:

- here we select the speed of the firmware:

- now turn off the phone and connect the firmware cable to it;
- click on the tab in the program Download, and then turn off the phone by holding the off button until a red bar (then blue, etc.) runs on the screen. This is how the phone data will be read:

- now you need to wait until the end of uploading the entire firmware to the phone. The program will mark the end of the filling with the OK icon;
- after the end of the firmware, disconnect the phone from the PC;
- disconnect and connect the Nokia N9 battery. It is possible that the phone will turn on not right away, but after 10-60 seconds, the power button of the phone must be held until it starts to work;
- go to the Nokia N9 settings and reset to the code specified by the factory settings. The firmware is complete.

Before starting the firmware, be sure to save phone IMEI since he is also lost. It is also advisable to get all SIM cards out of the mobile. Before and after flashing, it is advisable to format the user memory, which will get rid of the wrong effects after flashing.

Step-by-step instruction:
1. Make a backup copy, save it to your computer.
2. Turn off the device.
3. Run the device manager to monitor the equipment (optional)
4. Launch Phoenix, select the NO CONNECTION connection.

Next File - Open Product select RM-696 - "OK". Click Flashing - Frimware Update. Open the Product Code, select "OK". Positioning

Nokia is positioning the device as a temporary flagship of the line of smartphones, which looks surprising, especially against the background of statements by CEO Stephen Elop, who bluntly said in an interview with the Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat that regardless of the sales success of the first and last Meego smartphone, the company will focus on OS from Microsoft. The official announcement of the smartphone took place on June 21, 2011 in Singapore with a promise to start selling at the end of August. The company could not keep this promise, the model began to appear on the shelves from October 6th. But before moving on to its real market positioning, it is worth mentioning what MeeGo and Nokia N9 are.

Nokia started developing the operating system for smartphones back in 2004, it looked like an experiment in the field of touchscreen phones. With the release of the Apple iPhone in 2007, the company began to pay more attention to the development of Maemo (then the OS had this name) and considered that it was this OS that could become an adequate response to the product from Apple. But the existing products, for example, Nokia N800, Nokia N900 could not compete not only with Apple, but also with their own Symbian smartphones. As a result of the decision, the company started investing in Maemo / MeeGo. The total amount of investments in 2010 alone exceeded 300 million euros. Over the past few years - more than one billion euros. With the arrival of Stephen Elop, the company does not plan to actively develop this area and will pay less and less attention to it.

The story is surprising in that Nokia abandoned the direction that could potentially create one of the most modern, powerful and interesting OS. By the time the Nokia N9 was released, this device got rid of many of the OS drawbacks for children, got an impressive potential and was able to win the sympathy of consumers. Moreover, it was cheaper for Nokia to support the model, as well as the whole direction, and not to make harsh statements, which buried Nokia N9 even before the start of sales. Who in their right mind will buy a product that they will not develop, as the president of the manufacturing company constantly repeats. No one.

Instead, Nokia at the top management level talks about betting on a different OS, the latest product, and so on. On the other hand, the company is investing heavily in advertising the Nokia N9 as if it were a real flagship. Words are at odds with deeds, which brings additional confusion to the head. The delay in the launch of the model leads to the fact that the advertising campaign launched for this device, for about a month, beckons people to the shops, where you cannot even see the dummies. Against the background of the release of competing and more mature products, this looks like a dangerous delay.

Nokia themselves cannot decide on their attitude towards the Nokia N9. On the one hand, this is a device that in the future was supposed to give rise to a whole line of devices, but according to all the comments of Nokia's management, this will not happen. On the other hand, they try to sell him and lure him with promises of support for Meego until 2016. We are talking about service support for the sold models for three years, which is normal practice, but no one focuses on this. There is no investment in the development of the ecosystem for Meego from Nokia. A former partner in this Intel project, the relationship between the company is strained. Nokia's exit from the project was unexpected, as a result Meego will not receive any support. From Nokia's side, this direction can be considered almost entirely closed. And this is insulting. The potential of this device and OS is maximum, in theory, within 5-6 years, it was Meego that could become one of the most popular / strong OS. It is impossible to go a long way instantly, every OS and every manufacturer spends time and money on this path. Nokia had done most of the work and were ready to reap the benefits of their labor. But the Meego development team was robbed of the future. And this is the most offensive thing in this story.

How is Nokia N9 positioned? From Nokia's side, this device is presented as a flagship, on the other hand, the number of countries in which the company sells it is minimal. The scope of supply of the model is also as limited as possible. The situation is repeated with the Nokia N900, which was sold in the volume of about one hundred thousand units all over the world, and it was an absolute failure. Apparently, Nokia thought that the new model could repeat the failure of the previous device (which is not the case), or tried to make room for the Nokia Lumia 800 (a temporary flagship based on WP7, which uses the same body and design as in Nokia N9).

Find the differences in the photograph of the two devices. They do not exist, except for the OS inside the models and minor differences. The fate of the Nokia N9 was sacrificed in order to boost sales of the Nokia 800 Lumia. And this is another Nokia blunder. Refusing its own and promising OS in favor of an OS that has not been able to prove its worth is a stupid move from any point of view. It is clear that Nokia N9 is by no means an ideal device, which has a lot of little things that need to be improved. This is not a perfect smartphone, not the best device on the market. But it has a novelty (which is not in WP7 in any form), elegance, and I repeat again, a huge potential that will never be revealed.

For the average consumer, this means a fairly simple thing - the device will never receive the same number of applications as iOS, Android or even WP7. Exactly the same story happened with the Nokia N900. Unfortunately, this is a model with no future, but very attractive for a certain audience - geeks. Those who have bought and used the Nokia N900 with pleasure know firsthand what the command line is, and want to improve their phone endlessly, scouring in search of programs. It is rather a story that you get not even a constructor, but a prototype of a constructor for the game. For the mass consumer, this device is expensive, incomprehensible and does not provide additional features, except for those that you get out of the box (a good illustration is the lack of the ability to publish photos in the Twitter client, there are simply no alternative clients). There is no particular innovation in this phone, but the user experience is much poorer than even in modern Symbian phones, but at the level of WP7.

The bottom line is that we have a very interesting phone for collectors, those who love exotic things, but by no means a product for the mass market. And despite the advertisements, ordinary shoppers have already realized this and are not buying a phone. I am sincerely sorry not for this device, but for the whole direction of Meego, which could become a new word on the phone market. But it will no longer be in any scenario.

For developers, Nokia has released the Nokia N950, a complete copy of the N9, but with a QWERTY keyboard. You cannot buy this model in the store.

Design, dimensions, controls

The design of Nokia N9 cannot be called original for the market, it is unusual for Nokia. To some extent, this is a rehash of the appearance of the Apple iPod, the external similarity of these devices is obvious.

The body is made of polycarbonate, which is one of the types of plastic. The body is one-piece, which ensures the absence of slots, moving parts, makes the device monolithic. It is impossible to believe that polycarbonate is an expensive material that can be compared with glass in iPhone 4 / 4s, metal in a number of other models. This is ordinary plastic, which is also used in inexpensive models that cost less than 100 euros (for example, the Asha line from Nokia).

The protective glass of the screen is made with a slight bead along the edges of the case, an unusual and pleasant solution. The cover, which can be put on the device, makes the protective glass flush with the clothes, which is also a plus. To my taste, a protective case is absolutely unnecessary, unless you change the color with it. The quality of the case is such that hardly any scratches remain on it, and the need for a case is questionable. The polycarbonate case reacts poorly to shocks, cracks may appear. But I will make a reservation that this is rather an exception, the device is reliable and practical.

Some users claim that their screen "peels off", a gap appears between the display and the case. Considering that the screen is not glued, but inserted into the case, it cannot come off. This problem is not widespread and may be associated with poor assembly or, more likely, with the fact that the phone was dropped. In the service center, this defect can be corrected in a few minutes.

The desire to create a monolithic body has imposed restrictions on the apparatus. For example, on the top there is a 3.5 mm jack, and next to it is a plug for a microUSB connector. You need to push the plug and it opens. The plastic plug is made like a door, on one hinge. The solution is very unfortunate, since it will be difficult to charge the phone from an external battery in a bag, you risk losing the cover. And if you leave the phone in the charger and put it on the bed next to it, you are also guaranteed to lose the cap. For example, a friend of mine accidentally tore off a stub on the first day.

Opening the flap, you can pull out the microSIM card holder. I personally don't see any drawbacks in using this type of cards, there are quite enough of them on the market. The battery, as you know, is built-in, which makes the model similar to Nokia N8, but with one big difference. If replacing the battery with a Nokia N8 required a minimum of skills, it was enough to unscrew a couple of screws and have a corresponding screwdriver, but this is not the case. You need to be able to disassemble the phone.

On the right side there is a paired volume rocker, next to it is an on / off button. At the bottom end there is a loudspeaker grill, there is only one here. Unfortunately, the use of a polycarbonate housing introduces certain problems, the speaker sounds quiet. The ring volume at maximum is not enough to hear the phone from the pocket of a jacket or jeans. You can hear it, but the volume is almost half that of ordinary Nokia devices (for example, worse than the Nokia 6700 Classic, Nokia 5800, Nokia X6, and so on).

The weight of the phone is 135 grams, the size is 116.45x61.2x7.6-12.1 mm. The device lies well in the hand, and at the same time it feels like a weighty block. The body material does not look cheap, it is of high quality and feels unusual. The device also fits in a pocket with ease.

On the back, you can see an 8MP camera as well as an LED flash.

The device is available in four colors - white (appeared later), black, turquoise and purple (black, cyan, and magenta). Unofficially, the company showed two more colors - green and orange, but so far there is no information on the timing of the launch of these colors.

Display

The screen is made using AMOLED technology, it has an anti-reflective coating. In the sun, the picture remains readable, which is not bad. The screen resolution is 854x480 pixels with a diagonal of 3.9 inches (16: 9). The picture quality, brightness, colors - everything is at the level for the current market and the flagships of a year ago. There is nothing striking, decent display, but not upside-down dreams.

The screen has a built-in Gorilla Glass coating, which has also been mastered by all major manufacturers for about a year. The curvature of the screen surface has also been mastered by other companies. But here it is quite appropriate and pleasant.

The disadvantages of the screen include its diagonal and rather small font size. The fonts are curly in many menus, but this makes the perception of the device worse, the information is harder to read. This is especially noticeable in the browser, the perception of information is much worse than in the iPhone 4 / 4s, Galaxy S / S2. Both the screen diagonal and the size of the fonts have an effect.

After using the aforementioned devices, it is not very convenient to browse the Internet with the Nokia N9, although all other functions do not raise any questions. At all. Things are good.

The screen is capacitive, pressing is very pleasant and simple, on the level of iPhone or Galaxy S2, a huge step forward compared to Symbian products. There is an automatic screen rotation depending on the position of the device. The problem is that rotation only works in one direction, on the other hand, many applications and menus do not support rotation. Why this is so remains a mystery to me, but the spread does not work in many places in the standard menus. And this is a huge disadvantage to the standard functionality and the experience that you expect from the device.

The Nokia website states that the device has a built-in light sensor that automatically adjusts the backlight level of the screen to the external conditions. Unfortunately, this is not true, since there is no such setting in the menu, only manual level selection. It is clear that if there is a physical sensor (it is here), later they will add automatic changes to the backlight, but at the moment this is not the case. Unfortunately, there are a lot of such small discrepancies between the official description and reality.

Battery

The phone has a non-removable Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1450 mAh. According to the manufacturer, the device can work with it up to 380 hours in standby mode and up to 11 hours in talk mode. In the conditions of networks of Moscow operators the device works for about 2 days with 40 minutes of talk time per day and up to an hour of using other functions. Full charge time is about 2.5 hours. In the menu you can see all the information about the battery charge and the estimated operating time.

There is a power saving mode, it can be automatically turned on when a certain percentage of the battery charge is reached. This is a convenient setting, although it is not clear what exactly the device turns off (it lowers the backlight level, it probably does something else).

The huge advantages of this device and the Meego platform include the operating time. The device lives quietly for about 2 days, in comparison with Android this is an achievement, with the iPhone the results are quite comparable. And this is the strong point of the phone.

Unfortunately, some programs can dramatically increase power consumption, especially if they are running in the background. With what it is connected, with the curvature of the programs themselves or something else, I do not know. But this kind of software can drain the battery very quickly. Therefore, if your phone starts to work significantly less, it is worth looking at what you have installed recently.

For some users, the charging indicator does not work well, in particular, it does not flash during charging, and after its completion it does not light up constantly. This issue is discussed on the Nokia website.

Unfortunately, it is not very clear what this problem is connected with, the SC does not have a description of such a problem, sometimes it disappears by itself. In my opinion, it is not worth attaching great importance to this behavior of the indicator.

Memory

The device comes in two versions, with 16 or 64 GB of internal memory. Memory cards are not available in any of the options. The memory distribution is as follows (using the 64 GB version as an example) - for applications - 4.2 GB (it takes about 2 GB out of the box), application data (2.1 GB), user data (57.7 GB).

In the 16 GB version (15.79 GB), the memory is distributed as follows - for applications - 4.2 GB (it takes about 2 GB out of the box), application data (2.1 GB), user data (9.5 GB).

RAM in the phone is 1 GB. Unfortunately, when comparing different operating systems, one cannot approach them in the same way and estimate the amount of RAM without taking into account the resource intensity of the operating system. It will be an artificial comparison that will not lead to any practical results.

For Nokia N9, the most advanced version of multitasking is announced, which became possible, among other things, due to the use of such a volume of RAM. You can work with applications, and they do not close, but they take up a minimum of memory space (in theory, and for standard applications). I honestly admit that I like the way the device works with standard applications, there are icons of open pages in the memory, there can be several dozen of them (officially they say they support up to 70 applications or functions). And this is convenient, although after a dozen open applications it is already difficult to navigate them. But here the first roughness begins.

At the OS level, automatic memory cleaning is not implemented (it exists, but it works in emergency, problem situations). You can configure the menu to close applications (pull the screen down), but by default, applications are simply minimized. And this is a minus. Because opening, for example, an unconverted video, and then a MS Word document, you will face the fact that everything will start to slow down and the device may restart. The video for this review clearly shows that this is a standard situation that can happen at any time.

Android or iOS provides standard OS tools that do not require user intervention, the OS decides when and which application to close in order to free up resources, but this does not happen here, and this is a serious disadvantage. Readers who, after seeing the number of open applications in our video, were outraged that this was a dishonest comparison, forgot that other operating systems themselves care about this. And that's okay. People don't have to keep in mind which apps are open, which aren't, and what they can use and what they can't. It is not normal. Devices are designed for people, not the other way around.

I think it is worth adding information about the processor in the phone, it uses TI OMAP 3630 (ARM Cortex A8, 1 GHz, single core), plus a graphics coprocessor - PowerVR SGX530. In my opinion, the device is fast, it starts to slow down only on difficult tasks, and I would put it on a par with flagships based on Android - for example, Samsung Galaxy S or Sony Ericsson Arc. The device loses to models with dual-core processors, it can be seen visually when working in the menu, everything is not so fast, but for most people this speed will be more than sufficient.

Communication capabilities - Bluetooth, USB, WiFi, NFC

USB... When connecting, you can select one of the operating modes:

• Data Storage (Mass Storage USB)- the phone memory is visible, no drivers are required, the OS itself recognizes the phone.
• Sync & connect... PC connection for data synchronization.

The data transfer speed is about 12 Mb / s (depends on the OS and the computer). When the USB cable is connected, the phone is charged.

Bluetooth... The old standard 2.1 + EDR is used, which does not raise any questions, since the advantage of 3.0 is only in the speed of file transfer, the Bluetooth version does not affect the work with accessories in any way.

The model supports various profiles, in particular, Headset, Handsfree, Serial Port, Dial Up Networking, File Transfer, Object Push, Basic Printing, SIM Access, A2DP. Working with headsets does not raise any questions, everything is commonplace.

Wi-Fi... The standard 802.11 b / g / n is supported, this is not the first device on the market with such a set of protocols. The disadvantages include a long search for networks, you click in the search menu and then wait up to a minute for the first names of networks to appear. It is possible that this is a problem with many networks, but a similar problem is present in most places. Otherwise, Wi-Fi has no complaints.

NFC... One of the first models to support and work with NFC tags. In the field, it was possible to test the operation of NFC in the USA with Google Wallet installed in stores (the first version of the software, nothing worked - the second version of the software, no tags were received from the Google Wallet device). In Russian conditions, the installed commercial systems do not support NFC in phones (they do not support NFC in the current implementation). In total, the thing is completely useless, unless you transfer something from one phone to another using this standard.

Camera

Nokia N9 uses a unique camera and a number of solutions that can be considered unusual for the phone market. In particular, most screens in phones are 16: 9 rather than 4: 3 as it used to be. In order to adapt the image to widescreen screens, you can either enlarge it (post-processing from a 4: 3 picture), or crop it, reducing the resolution. The Nokia N9 uses an 8.7 megapixel sensor, which crops the picture to 16: 9, that is, it gets an honest resolution (the actual resolution is 7 megapixels). At the same time, in 4: 3 format this is an honest picture from the sensor. Look at the illustration, from it it is clear how images are obtained in two formats on the sensor.

The camera specifications are as follows:

• Maximum resolution 3248 x 2448 for 4: 3, 3248 x 2160 for 3: 2, 3552 x 2000 for 16: 9
• Aperture 2.2, focal length 28 mm
• Autofocus, touch focus control, constant focus on the subject when shooting movies
• Focusing from 10 centimeters to infinity
• Digital zoom x4 (including video mode)
• Geotags, with the addition of a place name (option to be disabled)
• Ability to add information about the author
• 720p video recording (1280x720 pixels, 30 fps)
• Two microphones when recording video, stereo sound

Describing this camera, the developers refer to the fact that they were limited in the size of the module, and say that it is 70 percent smaller than that of the Nokia N8. In my opinion, this is not quite a correct comparison, since the Nokia N8 camera was chosen according to a different principle, this is a photo solution, which the N9 is not. Nevertheless, the camera produces pretty good results on a clear day. By default, the camera is set to 16: 9 format, look at the pictures from it in 4: 3 format. And depending on what you like best, choose the default setting.

Unfortunately, the phone lacks hardware keys for working with the camera, all control is carried out from the screen. You take the time to find the camera icon, but it makes up for it by the fact that it is very fast. Nokia proudly claims that this is the fastest camera, but it is not. Some devices turn out to be faster, for example, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray. But it seems to me that from a certain point it makes no sense to compare the speed, the camera is fast, and this is enough in most situations. Therefore, we will leave the statements about the fastest camera to marketers, the fact that it is high-speed is enough for us.

You can focus on a subject by selecting it on the screen, including when shooting a video. There is automatic face detection. If you hold down the shutter button for a long time, the device focuses on the object (blue square). As a rule, when shooting landscapes, people and all objects at a distance of 25 centimeters and beyond, preliminary focusing is not required, the automation works well. Another thing is shooting objects up close, you have to press a button and wait for the camera to focus. Shooting spikelets in the wind, I was faced with the fact that the camera often does not have time to work out the movement, it is better to shoot stationary objects.

All settings are made from the screen, you cannot change them quickly during shooting, you have to go to the menu (but it's not difficult). The number of settings is quite large. This is a scene selection - Automatic, Macro, Landscape, Portrait, Night, Sports, flash mode - on, off, red-eye reduction. White balance - automatic, sunny, cloudy, fluorescent, incandescent. Exposure compensation from -2 to +2.

Filters (this option appeared only in the first software update) - black & white, sepia, vivid, negative, solarize.

ISO selection is automatic, 100, 200, 400 and 800.

The aspect ratio is 16: 9, 4: 3, 3: 2. Detect and focus on faces in the picture. The name of the creator of the pictures - here you can enter your name or whatever, the label will be added to all pictures. Geotagging (simple geotagging), converting geotagging to the name of a country and city, region (if there is an Internet connection, the geotagging will be converted).

When shooting, the device can be rotated as you like, the camera interface is automatically deployed. Of the nice features, it is worth noting the ability to view a picture for a couple of seconds or all the time, while you can use the zoom (a unique opportunity, according to Nokia, although viewing on the Samsung Galaxy S2 is implemented in exactly the same way, there is a zoom option).

The built-in photo editor has a really unusual function. It is quite simple, there are no special settings in it. In this case, the snapshot, as a rule, is saved without creating a duplicate (in all phones, the edited snapshot is offered to be saved under a different name, which is logical). The Nokia N9 retains both the original photo and its edited version. In this case, the second option is shown to the user; it is impossible to find the original snapshot. But in preview mode, you can reverse all changes (at any time) and get the original image. In my opinion, the function is absolutely useless, since those who use the photo editor on the phone can also save them under different names.

The LED flash is powerful enough and has both pros and cons. Literally a couple of shots using it. I think they are quite indicative.

Dry residue in the chamber. An ordinary mid-range camera, which is very good in its class and quite on par with other solutions. Doesn't provide some kind of masterpiece quality, everything is quite good. There are both pros and cons.

Video recording... The maximum resolution is 1280x760 pixels (720p) at 30 frames per second. When recording, two microphones work, which provides stereo sound. There are no other features in this mode, you can look at the video quality in the corresponding examples.
