As a result, 300 watts is quite enough for operation, at least 400 watts are required for games.

Design features

Review video card has a fairly aggressive appearance and dimensions.

The efficiency of the heat dissipation system and the overclocking potential make it possible to achieve an increase in productivity up to 10-12 percent or more, which in most cases is quite sufficient to a satisfactory level.

The GTX 1050 is Nvidia's cheapest graphics card designed for Full HD gaming. It can handle a lot of games with ease, albeit not at high settings.

But this card isn't just for those games: As a competitor to AMD's Radeon RX 460, this GPU is capable of playing the latest games in Full HD if you want to tweak your settings a bit.

The model for review here is an EVGA interpretation that sells for £ 10,000. While this review will make comparisons to its closest competitor, the RX 460, they sit in slightly different categories.

GTX 1050 - features and design

The GTX 1050 uses Nvidia's ultra-efficient Pascal architecture found in the 1050, 1060, 1070 and the GTX 1080 class.

But there is more. This is the most stripped-down Pascal chip, with only 640 CUDA cores. This lack of cores is due to the high slew rate of 1.455 MHz at this specific model... It is also equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

EVGA opted for a compact design with a card size of just 145mm. This means it will fit into the most compact gaming platforms. It is cooled by a small heatsink and one fan, and comes in a rather simple, stylish EVGA plastic case.

This is one area where the GTX 1050 has an edge over the RX 460: there are many more compact GTX 1050 models on the market.

You get DisplayPort 1.4, DVI-D and HDMI 2.0b connectors, matching the RX 460 output. No ATX power connectors: This board is fully powered by the PCI-E bus.

GTX 1050 - Performance Benchmarks

Keep in mind that if you add the GTX 1050 to a much older system with slower memory, fewer CPU cores, and a slower disk, your results may vary significantly, especially in the AAA games tested here.

I dropped the standard WoWMooN benchmark and focused on the games the GTX 1050 was designed for. I swapped out Tomb Raider and GTA V for Overwatch and CS: GO, although I kept both Hitman and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor to see how much this card is capable of playing AAA games at medium settings.

The results here are not comparable to our other GPU benchmarks (besides the RX 460) that were performed in High settings and Ultra.

CounterStrike: GO

Today the most simple game on test, CS: GO is a fast-paced shooter played by eSports professionals at the highest level. Almost any graphics card can play it, even the integrated Intel HD graphics. However, in games like this, more frames per second is always better, especially if you have a high quality monitor with a very high refresh rate.

Unsurprisingly, the GTX 1050 achieved excellent 256fps performance in this benchmark, hitting 19% more than the cheaper RX 460.

Overwatch

More challenging than CS: GO but popular, Overwatch is another FPS game that is loaded with particle effects and lighting. I changed it to High to see what you can expect in Full HD.

Again, the GTX 1050 handled Overwatch effortlessly, hitting an average frame rate of 112fps. That's 28% faster than the RX 460 at the same settings. Keep in mind that Overwatch makes very good use of the graphics settings that match your GPU.

Hitman

This GPU is not designed for AAA gaming, but why limit yourself? Hitman is one of the hardest games with built-in benchmarks, so it should push the GTX 1050 to its limits. I ran the test on medium settings to avoid the 2GB memory load. The test was carried out in Direct3D 12 mode, which tends to be preferred by AMD.

The score here was 46 frames per second, about 12% slower than the RX 460. However, this was not a surprise. Running the GTX 1050 in DirectX 11 mode, made for much higher frames per second, well above 55 frames per second.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

The ultimate benchmark is another, slightly more powerful game AAA to test the GPU's ability to handle multiple explosion effects and weather conditions... It ran at medium Full HD settings.

In this final game test The GTX 1050 averaged 79.1 fps, just 9% faster than the RX 460, which narrowed the gap significantly.

3DMark: Fire Strike Extreme

I also ran a synthetic benchmark that showed a serious discrepancy between the GTX 1050 and the RX 460. Nvidia processor coped with a score of 3.201 - 28% faster than the RX 460. This score is a violation and shouldn't affect your purchase, but nevertheless shows that when both cards go out of their bounds, the GTX 1050 seems to do better.

Power consumption

The GTX 1050 has a tiny TDP (Thermal Design Power) of just 75W, which means it draws all of its power from your motherboard. On board our high-end, overclocked PC during the Hitman benchmark, the entire system consumed just 150W; which is 61 watts less than the RX 460.

Should I buy a GTX 1050?

GTX 1050 - best example what Nvida's Pascal architecture has to show. It may not handle incredible benchmark results, but as a replacement component for an old or broken GPU it's fantastic; and it shouldn't require you to upgrade your PSU.

Considering that the price of the GTX 1050 is about 10 thousand rubles, the closest competitor here is the RX 460, which is sold in the range of 12-13 thousand rubles. I usually just talk about buying the most expensive GPU you can afford. But in this case, the performance increase offered by the GTX 1050 outweighs its higher price tag.

We are all watching with interest the battle between AMD and NVIDIA on the market graphic solutions, especially in the top segment. But often, most users are limited to simpler options. And if we talk about the domestic market, then the most popular models are below the $ 200 bar. Updates here do not happen as often as in the older segment, but over the past year several new models have been released. We have previously considered different variants budget graphics cards NVIDIA Pascal based on GP107 and a new product from AMD in the person of Radeon RX 460. Now let's put them all together, compare with previous generations of video cards and more powerful solutions. Let's take a look at what old and new models with different memory sizes are capable of, and how they cope with new games.

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1050, which have recently entered the market, are at the forefront of our benchmarks. They will be compared to their direct predecessors and some of AMD's competitors. The tests were carried out at standard frequencies and overclocked, which will allow us to evaluate the full potential of all graphics accelerators. For clarity, middle-class solutions have been added to the testing, so to speak, the younger of the older ones - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB and Radeon RX 470 8GB, which are tested only in nominal value.

Let's take a quick look at the features of all video cards.

Test participants

GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

The younger video card based on the GP106 graphics processor, which has lost some of the computing units and received a small amount of video memory of 6 GB. This series is featured in ASUS Dual GeForce GTX 1060 3GB testing.

The operating frequencies have been adjusted to be close to the Boost at 1860 MHz. According to rare reviews of reference cards, simple versions of the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB work at about these frequencies under normal conditions.

In this case, the Boost at 1860 MHz was unstable, with some deviations to lower and big side(up to 1873 MHz). The effective frequency of GDDR5 memory is 8 GHz. Overclocking was not used for older video cards, since they initially outperform the rest of the participants and will show a large margin even at the initial frequencies.

GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB

An older video card based on the GP107 graphics core with 768 CUDA stream processors. Introduced MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X 4G. Equipped with 4GB of 7GHz GDDR5 memory.

Based on the first review of the simple version, the frequencies have been adjusted so that the Boost is slightly above 1600 MHz. as a result, the Boost operating range was from 1633 MHz to 1658 MHz.

We managed to overclock the video card up to 1474 MHz at the base frequency (the standard value is 1290 MHz) with a peak Boost up to 1936 MHz. In the load, the main operating frequency range of Boost was 1898-1924 MHz. The memory was overclocked to 8088 MHz.

GeForce GTX 1050 2GB

Junior video card based on the GP107 graphics core with 640 CUDA stream processors. ASUS Expedition GeForce GTX 1050 introduced.

The video card operates strictly at the recommended frequencies. With a base core of 1354 MHz, Boost peaks up to 1658 MHz. Real frequencies are slightly higher than 1600 MHz, which is quite consistent with the frequency level of the Ti-version. The memory still runs at 7GHz but has been reduced to 2GB.

Overclocking at the base frequency of 1544 MHz with Boost up to 1848 MHz, but the real frequencies are closer to 1700 MHz. The final overclocked memory frequency is 8079 MHz. Full details in the corresponding ASUS Expedition review.

GeForce GTX 960 2GB

The video card is based on the previous generation GM206 Maxwell processor. Operates with 1024 stream processors. This card is represented by EVGA GeForce GTX 960 SuperSC ACX 2.0+ with 2GB of memory.

The frequencies are lowered to the level of the reference samples. Boost cores at a stable 1270 MHz mark, which does not require any additional illustrations. Effective memory frequency 7012 MHz. Overclocking to 1347 MHz at baseline with a stable Boost of 1510 MHz, the memory frequency increased to 8100 MHz. GPU operating voltage increased by 20mV.

GeForce GTX 950 2GB

A video card based on a stripped-down GM206 core with 768 stream processors. Introduced EVGA GeForce GTX 950 FTW ACX 2.0 with Clocked Clocks.

The declared base frequency of the core is 1024 MHz, Boost is stabilized at the level of 1270 MHz. Effective memory frequency 6610 MHz, volume 2 GB. Overclocking 1263 MHz core basic level with a stable Boost 1515 MHz, memory overclocking 8100 MHz.

Radeon RX 470 8GB

Representative of the new Polaris family. The standard version is equipped with a stripped-down GPU version and 4 GB of video memory. We had to make do with the 8GB version, which is unlikely to have a big impact on the results, since in the heaviest games the settings were below the maximum level. Some additional benefits from 8 GB are possible, but only in a small number of test applications.

According to the standard specifications, the frequency of the video card should be 1200/7000 MHz for the core and memory. Taking into account the floating frequencies on the older Polaris, in this case, a minimum adjustment was made below the maximum, to the level of 1190 MHz. We managed to overclock our copy to 1310/7740 MHz.

Testing technique

Battlefield 4

Testing was carried out in the first mission after blowing up the wall. Jogging over a small area with dense vegetation was repeated before descending to a large construction site. Six repetitions. Frame rate measured at Fraps help.

All graphics options on Ultra, MSAA multisampling in 4x mode.

Battlefield 1

Testing was carried out by replaying a small game episode at the beginning of the Cape Helles mission, where the assault on Gallipoli is played out. Fighters land under heavy artillery fire, and with heavy explosions, performance sags more than in most other game moments. Seven repetitions were performed.

Selected Ultra-quality, disabled video memory limitation. Tested in DirectX 11 using Fraps.

Testing was carried out at the beginning of the mission "Black Sky" in a scene where the hero must get out of a vehicle that has collapsed on a building, kill enemies who have jumped onto the cockpit, and shoot other opponents.

The maximum quality of all available graphic parameters with SMAA T2x anti-aliasing. In the post-processing section, Filmic effects and grain are lowered to an average level, which provides a clearer, pleasing picture.

Dark souls 3

The walk through the previously cleaned first location at the very beginning of the game was repeated six times.

Maximum graphics quality selected. Additionally, the dynamic quality change parameter is disabled.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Instead of the built-in bechnmak, a manual testing method was used. For this, one of the most difficult episodes with greenhouses was chosen, through which the hero makes his way after the death of Talos Rooker's character. At least seven repetitions were performed.

The selected profile is "Very High" quality. Additionally, the effect of motion blur and chromatic aberration is disabled.

Fallout 4

Testing was done with Fraps right after leaving the hideout at the start of the game. We took a short walk through the surroundings with an abundance of vegetation and rich rays of light. Scenes with this environment will cause the most noticeable performance degradations. The procedure is shown below.

Six repetitions. Profile selected maximum quality graphics, HBAO + shading is additionally involved.

Far cry primal

Testing was carried out in the built-in gaming benchmark, which was run five times for each video card. The profile of the highest quality graphics with standard textures is selected.

Forza horizon 3

The first buggy race was chosen for testing, where we catch up with a car suspended from a helicopter. The race takes place on a challenging track with varied terrain and rich vegetation. This is a rather difficult track for video cards, which will allow us to fully assess the capabilities of rivals in this game. Frame rate measured using Mirillis Action! from the start of the race to the final. The race is long, so only four reps were performed.

Maximum selected high quality(High), active anti-aliasing FXAA and completely disabled MSAA, maximum quality of anisotropic filtering.

Gears of War 4

The built-in game bechnmark was used, which was run 6-7 times.

Ultra graphics quality selected, active additional functions DirectX 12 (Async Compute).

Grand theft auto 5

The built-in benchmark was used for testing. Average fps was calculated as the average value for all test scenes. The minimum fps for the entire time of the benchmark was recorded using Fraps. Five repetitions.

All the main parameters of the graphics at the maximum. Simple anti-aliasing FXAA is active. Options included additional settings, the distance of loading detailed objects (Extended Distance Scaling) and the item "length of shadows" (Extended Shadows Distance) + 100% to the base level.

Just Cause 3

A short walk was taken, during which a car was blown up in order to partially simulate a typical game situation. Seven repetitions were performed for each video card. If there was a large scatter in the final data, additional retries were performed.

Maximum graphics quality is set, all additional effects are active, anti-aliasing in SMAA T2x mode.

Mafia 3

A small game segment was replayed during the "Find Baku" mission, where you need to infiltrate the base of the Haitian group. Visually, this episode is not pretty, but it sags well in performance, which is why it was chosen for testing. Seven replays on each video card.

The selected graphics quality is medium. Disabled motion blur, the quality of anti-aliasing is minimal.

Metro: Last Light

Five runs of the built-in benchmark at maximum graphics settings.

Shadow warrior 2

Testing was carried out at the beginning of the game on the first location with lush vegetation. We took a short walk, and the frame rate was measured by Fraps. 6-7 repetitions were performed.

The selected profile is Ultra-quality at a resolution of 1920x1080.

Titanfall 2

Testing was done with Fraps at the start of the first mission after the prologue. A certain sequence of actions was carried out in a large location with a difficult landscape. Six to seven reps on each video card. With a small amount of memory and unstable results, two approaches were performed with that many runs.

The maximum quality of all graphic parameters is selected, including the "insane" quality of textures. Additionally, Adaptive Resolution is disabled, which provides a fixed value of 1920x1080, regardless of the load on the GPU.

A walk was performed along a certain route near the road that runs from the caves, from which the hero at the beginning of the game escapes from the Helgen fortress. New system lighting significantly degrades performance, so the morning time is specially selected so that there is a clearly pronounced effect of volumetric lighting with rays.

Ultra profile selected with standard TAA.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Testing was done using Fraps. Fps was measured during a trip on the road to the village of Bely Sad. Five repetitions.

Selected maximum graphics quality with some edits. In the main section, the HairWorks technology is disabled, the rest of the parameters are in the "beyond" mode. In the post-processing section, only glows, light rays ("light shafts"), anti-aliasing and SSAO shading are included.

Tom clancy "s the division

The built-in performance test was run seven times.

The selected profile of the highest quality graphics without additional edits.

Watch dogs 2

Testing was carried out immediately after the opening episode, when the hero goes out to the big city. We made a short run through the territory of the residential area.

Test results

Battlefield 4

Let's start by examining the results in Battlefield 4. All NVIDIA representatives have good results here. The GeForce GTX 950 with initial clocks bypasses the Radeon R9 270X. The GeForce GTX 1050 is almost as good as the GeForce GTX 960, which is weaker than the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. The overall difference between all of them is small. It is pleasant to note that the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is only slightly inferior to the Radeon RX 470. The GeForce GTX 1060 3GB is far ahead of all. After overclocking, the GeForce GTX 960 catches up with the Radeon RX 470, and the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti shows even higher frame rates. The weaker of all in par and in overclocking is the Radeon RX 460.

Battlefield 1

In the new Battlefield 1, video adapters show different results, but we must take into account that all tests were carried out before the major December update, which sharply reduced the performance in the game. The game is more demanding in terms of memory, using more than 3 GB. This factor tends to equalize all 2 GB solutions. There is a slight difference between the GeForce GTX 1050 and the GeForce GTX 960, while the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti has a serious advantage over its predecessor in 23-28%. The large memory capacity brings the Radeon RX 460 on a par with the Radeon R9 270X, the minimum lag behind the GeForce GTX 1050. The outsider this time is the GeForce GTX 950, although in overclocking it is almost as good as the accelerated Radeon. Overclocking the GeForce GTX 1050 gives an increase of 10%, and the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti improves its performance by 12% with increasing frequencies. No one can catch up with the GeForce GTX 1060 or the Radeon RX 470.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

Infinite Warfare has an insatiable appetite for video memory and is capable of downloading not only 4 GB, but all 8 GB. ASUS EX-GTX1050TI-4G has the recommended frequency formula. The base frequency of the GPU is set at 1290 MHz with an average acceleration value of up to 1392 MHz. The video card has 4 GB of GDDR5 memory, operating at an effective 7008 MHz.

Design and layout

In work

In rest mode, the video card works in passive mode. It would seem that an adapter with a relatively simple configuration of the heatsink unit is unlikely to cope with the cooling of the chip, but the results are shown in the corresponding screenshot.

At rest, the GPU frequency drops to 139 MHz at 0.675 V. Therefore, even a modest radiator block is enough to keep the temperature of a tiny economical chip within 30-35 degrees.

After a high gaming load (based on the completion of all tests), the processor temperature at its peak increased to 68 degrees. The fans start to rotate at about 60, and in order to keep the maximum bar, the speed increased to only 900 rpm. At the same time, the video card works almost silently.

Note that during the load, the GPU Boost mechanism in the normal mode increased the clock frequency of the chip to 1695 MHz.

Since the video card is not equipped with a connector for additional power supply, the Power Limit parameter is limited to 100%, and there is no way to adjust the supply voltage, we did not expect any special overclocking results. Nevertheless, it was still interesting to experiment. And our curiosity was rewarded.

Without additional preparations, the base frequency of the GPU was increased to 1541 MHz (+ 19.4%), while the memory instead of the standard 7008 MHz worked quite stably at 7868 MHz (+ 12.3%).

Even after significant overclocking, the temperature of the chip remained within the same limits, as well as the rotational speed of the fans. Additional afterburner noticeably shifted the operating frequencies of the GPU. At its peak, the frequency exceeded 1900 MHz, although the average values ​​were lower - 1750-1850 MHz. But the very fact that the GP107 operates at such frequencies is impressive. And this is on the adapter without additional power supply, increasing voltages and expanding energy limits.

Of course, for serious overclocking, adapter models are still better suited, to which you can additionally supply 75 W via a 12-volt line. Although, first, let's make sure that increasing the GPU frequency improves the performance of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

Performance

To evaluate the performance of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, we used the current models from the opposing camp - Radeon RX 460 4 GB and Radeon RX 470 4 GB. In addition, the diagrams show the results of the well-deserved GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2 GB, which has long remained the starting point for entry-level gaming systems, as well as the GeForce GTX 960 4 GB, a representative of the Maxwell generation, which recently looked appropriate in mid-range gaming PCs. To stay in the frame of reference for the new NVIDIA solutions, we've also added GeForce GTX 1060 6GB metrics.


The first measurements show that the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB is significantly more productive than the Radeon RX 460, equipped with the same amount of memory. The difference is 25-40% on average. One could say that this is a one-sided game, but here again it is worth recalling that these are not direct competitors at all. A more expensive model from one company turns out to be more productive than a device with a lower price tag from another developer. The situation is quite logical.



GeForce GTX 1050 Ti very easily and naturally unhooked the GeForce GTX 960, leaving no chance for the representative of the previous generation. The advantage of a novelty is often within the range of 10-15%.



Against this background, an almost two-fold advantage over the GeForce GTX 750 Ti looks predictable.


It's hard to compete with the Radeon RX 470 graphics cards based on the GP107. The advantage of 20-35% cannot be compensated even by overclocking. But, if we are talking about the influence of self-tuning, then we note that the increase in the frequencies of the chip and memory provided the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with an increase in the number of frames / s by about 10%. Not much, but quite good considering that it didn't take much effort.

GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB is a completely different class of devices, so the 70-80% difference in performance is not surprising.

As a result, the graphical hierarchy of actual models is presented in this way. Starting point - Radeon RX 460. Given the results of the GTX 1050 Ti, we can assume that the GeForce GTX 1050 will also be more productive than the base version of AMD. A little higher is the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. Then comes the Radeon RX 470. Curiously, just a few days before the start of sales of new NVIDIA solutions, AMD has adjusted the price of the Radeon RX 460/470, somewhat leveling the situation. For those who want even more, you will have to spend money on a Radeon RX 480 4/8 GB or GeForce GTX 1060 3/6 GB.

Price

Having been pleased with the pleasant American price tag, you should not count on a similar retail price for video cards based on GP107 in Ukraine. According to preliminary data, the recommended starting cost of the reviewed GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB in our market will be about UAH 6,000. (~ $ 230).

Output: The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB offers very good performance in its class, making it highly recommended for entry-level gaming systems. The video card is noticeably more productive than the Radeon RX 460 while having a similar level of power consumption. However, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is initially positioned as a faster solution. To compete with AMD's base model, the less expensive GeForce GTX 1050 will be used. In any case, the appearance of these models will be an excellent catalyst for the long-awaited changes in the segment of basic discrete graphics. Vivid first impressions of the GP107 device are somewhat blurred by the high starting prices. With a retail price of more than $ 200, such models are more likely to attract restrained interest. Nevertheless, the price factor is extremely important here, so let's hope that the initial boom will soon change the saturation period, followed by a decrease in the cost of video cards. As for the ASUS EX-GTX1050TI-4G itself, it is difficult to make any claims besides the high starting price. Deceptively simple at first glance, the cooling system does an excellent job of its main task. At rest, the video card works in passive mode, and at maximum load, the noise emitted is barely perceptible. If desired, even without additional power supply, the video card can be accelerated by increasing the frequencies of the GPU and memory.
