CCTV cameras Xiaomi: an overview of the range of devices. Xiaomi Ants Smart camera review

Installing a camera at home and instantly connect to it from anywhere in the world is our reality. Today this reality does not require large investments, confirmation of this is inexpensive Ants Smart Camera by Xiaomi, equipped with a rich set of functions and capabilities.

Design

The design of the device is impressive. It is designed in soothing colors and fits into any interior. The camera module is fixed on a proprietary stand and is removable.

On the front panel there is an optical sensor and an activity indicator, on the side there is a slot for a memory card, a microUSB connector and a built-in microphone. On the reverse side there is a "Reset" button, a speaker and a QR code for downloading a proprietary application.

Shooting quality

The built-in lens increases the viewing angle up to 111 degrees. Quite enough for observing a small room.

Shooting is carried out in 720p resolution at 20 frames per second. To record and save video, you need a microSD memory card up to 32 GB or external storage up to 1 TB. No built-in memory.

The quality is not pleasing with saturated colors and high details, but this is enough for a camera of this purpose. F2.0 mm optics allow you to get good shots in low light conditions.

The camera is useless at night due to the lack of infrared illumination.

Sound quality is acceptable, but no more. Digital noise and poor recording quality are common.

Customization and capabilities

To connect the camera to a power source, a 2.5 m USB / microUSB cable and an AC adapter are included in the kit. Supports connection to external batteries and other devices with 5V / 1A specifications.

Setting up the camera is quite simple and is carried out using the proprietary YiCamera application. The device connects to a Wi-Fi network at 2.4 GHz and supports the 802.11 b / g / n standard. The signal level in remote areas of the apartment remains stable.

The app allows you to connect to the camera in live mode, adjust the image quality, take photos and videos, and save them to your iPhone.

The feedback function provides the ability to send voice messages with their subsequent playback on the built-in speakers of the camera.

I managed to convince my pet to stop wiping himself on the bed. Conveniently.

The iOS application does not always work stably and is not available in Russian. English language support is implemented, but translation is missing in some places. Developers are actively releasing updates, which leaves hope for optimization and improvement of software quality.

The camera is compatible with third party applications (e.g. iSpy) and supports most popular protocols (IPV4, UDP, TCP, HTTP, RTP / RTSP, DHCP, P2P wep / wap / wppa2).

Accommodation

The ways of using such a device are individual and depend on the needs and ideas of the buyer. The stand design allows the camera to be placed on both horizontal and vertical surfaces. For example, on the wall.

The removable module can be rotated to adjust the angle and orientation of the shot. If you need to camouflage your camera, you can use it without a stand.

Outcome

Ants Smart Camera from Xiaomi with feedback technology is perfect for video babysitting or pet monitoring. The app allows you to connect multiple devices at the same time and provide your home with extra security.

The camera belongs to the low price segment, but offers some pretty interesting features and capabilities. Of these, the following advantages should be noted:

  • Beautiful design
  • Design versatility
  • Wide viewing angle
  • Decent shooting quality
  • Feedback function

The disadvantages include:

  • Lack of built-in memory
  • Lack of infrared illumination
  • Poor sound quality
  • Rotation in one axis only
  • Lack of Russian localization

Sometimes, for various reasons, the user is faced with the need to change the device firmware. For example, for the purpose of Russification. The camera is by no means an exception. Many users stereotypically turn to various workshops, where workers, taking advantage of the client's inexperience, allow themselves to inflate prices. Others try to do the flashing on their own, relying on instructions from the Internet.

We understand that truly qualified people are not always responsible for compiling them, therefore we have compiled the instructions ourselves, focusing on more advanced users, as well as our own accumulated experience. In it, we tried to explain everything in the most accessible language in order to facilitate the setup process.

The first thing to do is to make sure that you are not the owner of a 17cn camera model. The model is indicated on the back of the sticker of the IP camera itself. Unfortunately, firmware upgrade is not available for this version of the camera. If you find another numerical indicator, then it's time to move on to the next step.

We will consider an example of firmware on model 12, for model 22 the process is identical!

  • In parallel with reading this manual, you must download one of the proprietary applications (Xiaomi MiHome or Yi Ants) to your smartphone and with firmware.

  • After the download is complete, you need to unzip it. The folder in the archive is transferred unchanged to a MicroSD card previously formatted in FAT32 format.

  • Next, insert the flash card into the camera slot and turn on the device.
  • After switching on, the automatic installation of the firmware starts. The device will emit characteristic clicks and blink LED indicators. This process takes 4-5 minutes, during which the device must not be turned off and rebooted in order to avoid installation failures.
  • At the end of the allotted time, the camera will say a greeting phrase already in Russian, which is familiar to us.

Then follows the process of setting up the software using the application preinstalled on the smartphone (according to the instructions on the screen). For example, first you need to connect the camera to your smartphone and set up the network connection. It is worth mentioning that we managed to complete this process correctly only with proprietary software in English.

The application logs into the account of the Mi system. To do this, you need to connect to a WiFi network that provides communication between gadgets, and then enter your username and password. After logging in, a QR code will appear on the smartphone screen, and Yi Ants 2 will ask you to bring your smartphone to the lens. Detailed synchronization instructions will also be displayed to help you complete the setup. After a short wait, the firmware change is complete, and the device is almost ready for full-fledged work. Residents of the regions can only manually set the time zone.

Mi Smart Power Plug and Yi Camera

The Chinese company Xiaomi, which recently turned five years old, is known among mobile technology and gadget enthusiasts as a manufacturer of quality affordable products. On the pages of our resource, we have repeatedly met with her smartphones.

In addition to mobile devices and accessories for them (for example, external batteries), the company also deals with other household equipment. In particular, we recently tested its Mi Airpurifier.

Last fall, the manufacturer entered the home automation market with the Xiaomi Smart Home family, consisting of an outlet, a light bulb, a camera and a home appliance control unit. To control this equipment, specialized software for smartphones and tablets is used.

Earlier this year, the theme was developed in the form of a Smart Home Suite, consisting of several sensors and a special bridge. To connect the devices, the ZigBee wireless protocol is used, and the integration into the ecosystem is provided by a bridge to standard Wi-Fi. Note that neither the cost nor the availability of this solution has yet been announced.

Unfortunately, as with other interesting Xiaomi technology, these products were officially presented only in the Chinese market, which creates certain difficulties in acquiring them. In addition, all documentation and software originally used only this language.

We already had separate materials about the Xiaomi air purifier and the Xiaomi light bulb (however, it seems to be no longer part of the system), and in this article we will get acquainted with a couple more devices and evaluate the new version of the software.

Managed Socket Mi Smart Power Plug

Perhaps the simplest and most straightforward component of the Xiaomi Smart Home is the Mi Smart Power Plug. This device can be used to switch any standard electrical load and is additionally equipped with a port for charging mobile devices.

The model comes in a compact cardboard box, only a brief instruction in Chinese is included in the package. The body of the socket has external dimensions of 54 × 33 × 61 mm, excluding the plug. Its main part is made of strong white glossy plastic, and the bottom surface with a fork is matte gray.

The model is intended for the Chinese market, so the plug with which the device is connected to an outlet corresponding to the Type I standard. For operation in our country, you will have to use adapters. But the load can be connected to almost any thanks to the universal socket. Note that in some photos of the device, you can see a different combination of holes for the plugs.

At the top of the case there is a USB port for powering smartphones and other mobile devices. Next to it is the only device control button. It is used to quickly turn on and off the main load, as well as to reset the settings and connect to a new wireless network.

On the front side of the case there is a two-color LED indicator for the status of the socket. When the load is on, it glows blue. For a new device or after a factory reset, flashes orange.

The socket is designed to operate in AC networks with voltages from 180 to 250 V. The main load is switched using a relay, so there are no significant restrictions on its type in this case. The only thing you need to pay attention to is that the maximum permissible current is 10 A, and the power consumption should not exceed 2.2 kW.

Since a low-voltage DC power supply is required to power the electronics in any case, the implementation of an additional USB output for charging or powering various devices looks quite reasonable. The only pity is that the maximum current at this output cannot exceed 1 A.

For control, the socket is connected to an existing 802.11b / g / n wireless network in the 2.4 GHz range.

The last parameter given by the manufacturer is the operating temperatures of the device 0-40 degrees. And don't forget that we are talking about indoor use only.

Overall, the device looks well made and reliable. In real work, due to the need to connect via an adapter, the outlet will look less impressive.

IP Camera Yi Camera

First, we suggest watching our video review of the Xiaomi Yi Camera IP camera:

The camera comes in a cardboard box comparable in format to the packaging of a budget smartphone. Of the identification marks on it, only the YI logo can be seen. At the bottom of the box there is a sticker with the main parameters of the device. Most of the information here is in Chinese, but you can make out something.

The camera comes with a compact external power supply with a USB output (5 V 1 A, a plug will need an adapter for our outlet), a two-meter USB-microUSB cable, and a brief instruction in the same Chinese.

There are no comments on the package bundle, except for the lack of localization. However, this feature was known in advance. Note also that the cable can only be used to supply power; it is not designed for data transmission (for example, with a smartphone). However, the camera itself does not support connecting to a computer via a wire either.

Structurally, the device consists of two independent parts - a camera unit and a stand. The second element is made of sturdy matte white plastic and has one degree of freedom.

Considering that the stand can be simply rotated to the desired position, this is quite enough. The hinge gives the impression of being a reliable device and is unlikely to become loose with use. If necessary, it can be tightened by removing one of the end caps and using a regular screwdriver.

The base has a diameter of 8 centimeters and a built-in weight. At the bottom there is a soft rubber insert that securely holds the camera on horizontal or slightly tilted flat surfaces. The height of the stand is 11.5 centimeters.

There is also a wall mount option. To do this, the stand is disassembled into two parts and the base is fixed to the wall with three screws, then the stand returns to its place. So, despite the low cost, the designers paid a lot of attention to this moment and the manufacturer should be praised for the convenient multifunctional mount.

The body of the cylindrical block of the camera is made of black plastic. On the front side, it is glossy, and the back side is matte. The lens part is about 45mm in diameter, while the rear part containing the PCB is slightly larger at about 58mm. Thanks to the round shape of this block, we get another option for adjusting the position of the device - by rotating in the stand around its axis.

In addition to the lens, there is an indicator LED on the front of the device. It shows the connection status of the device and is blue in normal mode. If desired, you can turn it off through the control program.

On the bulge you can see a microUSB input for power supply and a slot for microSD memory cards. In addition, on the back there is a hidden reset button, as well as a built-in speaker grill. The microphone hole was placed on the edge near the USB port. Note that when using non-standard cables, it is worth choosing options with a not very large (long) plug, otherwise it may interfere a little, since in the usual configuration it is oriented downward, towards the stand hinge.

To service the camera, the original software for Android and iOS is used, in which there are no detailed settings for the quality and other parameters of the device. In this case, you can work with both the universal Xiaomi Smart Home program and the utility from the camera developer.

The model has a 1 MP matrix of ¼ ″ CMOS format and provides recording and broadcasting of video streams with a resolution of up to 1280 × 720 pixels with an audio track. The lens has the following specifications: F2.0, horizontal angle 92.7 °, vertical angle 48.7 °, diagonal angle 111.2 °. The camera is equipped with a built-in speaker and microphone, which allows two-way conversation. For recording clips, a microSD memory card with a capacity of up to 32 GB is used. Wireless connection is provided by an integrated 802.11n controller in the 2.4 GHz band with a maximum connection speed of 135 Mbps. A 5 V 1 A source is used for power, the declared power consumption is 2.5 W.

Measurement of real consumption during the broadcast showed that the maximum value is about 300 mA. This is a relatively low value, so that, if necessary, an autonomous scenario of work with power from a mobile battery can be implemented. You can also use a USB port on a computer, TV, or other device as a power source. If necessary, you can try to use the camera in the video recorder mode in the car. In this case, it is not even necessary to connect it to the Internet (for example, via a smartphone), since the recording to the memory card is carried out regardless of the availability of cloud services. However, it is not very clear how the camera determines the time in this mode.

The built-in wireless controller in some situations showed itself not very stable in terms of the quality of communication, so it is advisable to check the coverage area of the router before installing the camera in a permanent place.

The test showed that the microphone copes well with recording sound from sources located close to it, but it is not suitable for monitoring the entire room.

The system is controlled by the proprietary Xiaomi Smart Home application. At the time of the announcement, its original version was presented only in Chinese, which significantly limited the use of the program. Fortunately, the situation is gradually changing, in particular, the English version of the program is already available in the App Store.

For Android users, on the one hand, everything is a little more complicated, since this program is not presented on Google Play (but it is in the MI Store), and on the other hand, it is easier, since you can find a version translated into Russian in the apk file format. The translations can hardly be called ideal, but in general you can use the program. Note that the versions we tested are aimed specifically at smartphones, and on an Android tablet they looked very strange.

Note that there are no options for control from a computer, for example, via a web interface.

Currently, the program supports the following types of devices: Mi Plug, Yi Camera, Mi Airpurifier and Gateway. There is also a mysterious item "Others", but what is hidden behind it is not known for certain. Unfortunately, we did not find in the list the multicolor lamp that was present in the first illustrations of the system. As for the Gateway, it is likely under this name that the recently announced bridge for servicing wireless sensors from the Smart Home Suite runs.

After installing the utility, you need to register a Xiaomi / Mi account or, if you already have one, specify its details in the utility. This will allow you to share the same control system from different devices, as well as “share” it with other users.

The next step is to add devices to the program. Note that in this action there may be subtleties associated with the fact that the considered outlet and the camera only support wireless networks in the 2.4 GHz range, so it is advisable to select this network on the mobile device as well.

After that, you press the "+" button, select the type of connected device and the process of searching for it and configuring it to your network begins.

After the successful completion of this process, the presence of new versions of firmware for devices, including the outlet, is automatically checked, no matter how strange it may sound. Note that in one account you can collect devices connected in different places and through different providers. Being in the same network is required only at the stage of device installation.

In the presented general list, you can change some of the device parameters, for example, rename them or grant access rights to other Xiaomi / Mi accounts.

All possibilities for working with an outlet are determined exclusively by this software. The user has the ability to independently control the main load and the USB port.

In addition to the prompt switching on and off of two types of loads through the program, work with timers is also supported. The user can program several schedules independently for the 220 V and 5 V outputs, each of which indicates the on time, off time and a set of days of the week. Note that the schedule works even without the program running on the smartphone.

However, it requires the connection of the outlet to the company's cloud services. However, this is necessary for any work with this device. If you do not have access to the Internet, then even if you are in the same wireless network of a smartphone and an outlet, you will not be able to control it.

It is likely that if there are sensors in the system, it will be possible to somehow associate the events from the triggering with the operation of the outlet, but at the moment we have not checked this. Some sources mention the ability to work with the camera, but we did not find such a function in the program.

The standard capabilities of an IP camera can hardly be considered attractive for a demanding user. It can be interesting from the point of view of its low cost, practical design and good image quality for its class only for those who are satisfied with the functions of the standard program, and even then, with some reservations.

After connecting the camera to Xiaomi Smart Home, just like with an outlet, you can change some parameters. The main one is the name of the camera. The next one allows you to select the recording mode on the installed memory card. This operation can be carried out continuously or when motion is detected in the frame. The second mode saves space on the memory card, but does not have any detailed settings. The third option is responsible for the ability to record videos to the drive of the Xiaomi router. It is possible to send notifications in case of loss of connection with the camera, turn off the LED indicator and enable an additional four-digit pin-code to access the broadcast from the camera.

In the absence of documentation, it can be difficult to understand how a device works. In this case, such a scenario of several actions is presented. Firstly, the camera records video to its memory card (depending on the settings, constantly or upon motion detection), and it does so in two files at once - high-resolution and standard, dividing the time into fragments of about a minute. For each hour, its own folders are created with names like "2015Y05M27D05H". In this case, the recording is carried out as long as there is free space, and when it runs out, the old records are deleted. There are no settings for the quality of the recorded video. Examination of the received documents shows the following parameters for the mp4 format: for HD - 1280 × 720, 20 fps, maximum about 1.1 Mbps, H.264, [email protected], stereo AAC sound, for SD - 640 × 360, 20 fps, maximum about 300 Kbps, H.264, [email protected] For audio, both use the AAC-LC codec with formal stereo recording.

Secondly, at the same time, you can connect to the camera from the program to view the live broadcast, as well as to access the archive recorded on the memory card. It should be admitted that this option is quite convenient from the point of view of navigation in close time intervals. The picture here is spoiled by the moment associated with setting the built-in clock - the camera thinks that it is in China and therefore we see a complete "inconsistency" - one time ("Chinese") is superimposed on the video stream, and a completely different one (local for the client) is used on the timeline.

In the case of working in the same local network or the client has a "white" IP address, the video stream is broadcast directly from the camera, but if this is not possible, then the manufacturer's cloud services are included in the process, providing communication between the camera and the client. Note that any work with the camera also requires a connection to the cloud service. Otherwise, even in the local network, the program will not show anything.

The main space in the interface for working with the camera in portrait orientation of the screen is occupied by a window with an image, and due to the difference in formats, you can use panning, including rotating your smartphone. Additionally, you can enlarge the picture with a standard two-finger gesture to see details. Below it there is a point for switching the broadcast quality (SD, HD or auto), an icon for switching to landscape mode, a timeline on which the time when the recording was made is highlighted in color, and several buttons: turn off recording and broadcast, turn on the microphone, take a picture (recorded on local device), enable audio broadcast. In the Android version, there is no mute of the audio broadcast from the camera, but there is the ability to quickly navigate through the archive of recordings when working with a Xiaomi router. In landscape mode, the image from the camera occupies the entire screen, you can call the timeline and the main buttons on it. If you have a Xiaomi TV, you can display the picture from the camera on it.

Please note that broadcasting audio from a mobile device to the camera works only when you press and hold the button with the microphone sign. The sound of the speaker built into the camera is not very high-quality - the frequency band is narrow, you can hear wheezing as if overloaded. Most of all, this scheme resembles working with inexpensive walkie-talkies. The volume will be enough, perhaps, only in a not very noisy room at a distance of two or three meters.

The question of the choice of broadcast quality remained unclear. Apparently, the device has built-in algorithms for determining the speed of network access and can optimize the quality for these parameters. However, even when working on the same local network, we encountered a situation where the camera switched to standard definition, which was strange.

As we said above, in addition to the Xiaomi Smart Home utility, you can also use the YiCamera program directly from the developer of this device to view broadcasts from the camera. It is also available in the Android and iOS versions. There are no significant differences in functions here, only local video recording and display of the current bitrate have been added. The connection is also carried out through the Xiaomi cloud service.

To watch videos from a computer, you can try using the same programs by running them in special Android emulators. On the net you can find descriptions of successful implementations of this scheme.

More interesting is the question of using this product with third-party programs and video surveillance systems. Unfortunately, the answer will be no. The current official camera firmware does not allow access to it except from the original utilities. However, there are a few loopholes for power users. The first is to install on the camera one of the earlier versions of the firmware, in which broadcasts via the rtsp protocol were not password protected. This allows many systems compatible with this protocol to be used for camera maintenance. Also in this firmware it is possible to access the files recorded on the memory card via the http protocol.

The second option is to gain access to the embedded operating system console. This could potentially help fix the time stamping situation as well. For those who are ready to go further, let us mention the presence of a miniature console connector on the camera board.

As for the quality of the resulting image, it can be assessed as good for this class of models. It will be quite enough for using the device in a home or office. However, do not forget that the model in question is not equipped with backlighting and in low light the quality (and resolution and frame rate) drops noticeably and even switching to black and white recording does not help. And in the absence of light, the camera will be simply useless. You can evaluate the capabilities of the device by the videos below (file size - up to 8 MB).

Day 1 ,

As far as Xiaomi Smart Home is concerned in general, the current version hasn't produced the same effect as some of the other products of the company. No special "intelligence" in this product has yet been observed. The situation may be corrected with the appearance of the Smart Home Suite on the market, but for now we can only talk about minimal functions and remote control. Of course, in certain scenarios this will be enough, but we expect much more from this manufacturer. The need to ensure constant communication with the company's cloud servers is difficult to assess unequivocally. Many people may not like the lack of an autonomous mode, but there is no doubt that this approach made it possible to ensure a relatively low cost of the devices themselves and the exclusion of a separate controller from the operation scheme, which is also worth something. The software offered by the company for smartphones does not have a wide range of features. In addition, when working with it, you often encounter difficulties with the lack of translation of some text fields.

The management of electrical loads is, of course, one of the basic functions of an automation system, and such an element should be present in the range. The advantages of Mi Smart Power Plug include a good appearance, the presence of a controlled USB output and a universal connector for plugs. The downside is the need to use an adapter to work with domestic sockets. The use of a Wi-Fi network for communication, perhaps, can be considered quite reasonable in this case, since wireless technologies have already firmly entered our life, and the presence of a constant power supply allows you not to worry about power. Note that some competing products, such as those with Z-Wave technology, have an additional power consumption estimation feature.

The wireless Yi Camera features a compact size, wide-angle lens, convenient multi-function stand, support for recording to a memory card, wireless interface and two-way audio communication. From the point of view of the quality of the resulting image, it shows average results, which significantly depend on the illumination. Note that the manufacturer has recently released an updated model with built-in backlighting. The relatively low video bitrate allows you to keep about 70 hours of recordings on a 32 GB memory card. The function of viewing a live image and an archive is implemented quite well. Conveniently, for organizing remote viewing, no router settings or the presence of a white address are required. On the downside, we will write down the need to communicate with the cloud service even to watch videos from a memory card and the absence of any quality settings and the operation of the motion detector.

The widespread brand Xiaomi (Xiaomi) is now well known to consumers in the CIS countries.

Having begun its penetration into the Russian-speaking market with inexpensive smartphones, in which the technological hardware filling was distinguished by some instability of work, the manufacturer continuously improved the quality of its proposals.

The range of products has also improved. Today, the prices include not only a reliable phone, but also Xiaomi, DVRs, routers and much more.

Features of Xiaomi products

If we consider Xiaomi products from the standpoint of an approach to the development of ergonomics and typical schemes of hardware solutions, we can immediately highlight several distinctive features of the brand's products.

  1. The number of controls and adjustments is minimal. However, buttons and other elements make it easy to access the functionality you want. At the same time, the location of each switch is carefully thought out and convenient.
  2. Xiaomi devices are emphatically technologically advanced, with a somewhat minimalist design in the cases. A typical Xiaomi WiFi home security camera is a simple lens, no excessive adjustments, a sleek plastic body with minimal fillets.
  3. In hardware solutions, there is a clear balance between cost and technology level of nodes and key elements. For example, sensors are used that allow you to achieve an ideal picture, which are distinguished by reliability and reliability. But the range of such structural elements belongs to the segment of products that have been used for a long time, well-known, not related to the latest technological generation of products.
  4. In the context of the software shells used, there is also a tendency to use inexpensive and reliable solutions. The Xiaomi WiFi camera will not offer any highlights. The software for its management and configuration is based on standardized shells and operating systems. It is reliable, predictable, intuitive.

Xiaomi products have another distinctive feature: the manufacturer seeks to offer as much useful functionality as possible.

For example, relatively inexpensive cameras have smoke and temperature sensors that will pamper the owner with the capabilities of a real optical zoom.

In addition, the brand is following the path of optimal compatibility across all of its devices.

This means that the Xiaomi WiFi CCTV camera provides access from a smartphone of this manufacturer, control and configuration using proprietary software.

It is because of these features that Xiaomi products are deservedly popular among consumers. Today the brand cannot boast of the most attractive prices.

However, in terms of the overall balance of cost, convenience, simplicity and functionality - Xiaomi CCTV camera can confidently win the competition from any competitor from its price segment.
