Introduction

Few people now can imagine the Internet without search, search results and organizing all this information search engines (ISS). But until recently, all the information on the Internet fit into several directories, the name of which is still on hearing (DMOZ, Yahoo).

Today, the amount of information on the Internet is so huge that it is not possible to fit it into any catalogs. For processing, storing information, organizing search, powerful software products that we call search engines (SE) have been created and continue to be created. Each search engine (search engine) has its own databases, its algorithms for processing, searching, ranking and issuing information.

Internet search engines are

You can give the following academic definition to search engines. A search engine is a set of programs and technical means for organizing a user search on the Internet, in which, upon a text query, the user receives a list of relevant (corresponding to the query) results.

Issuance is made in the form of a list of links to a source of information with a short description (preview), sometimes with a photo.

For the first example, let us recall the world leader of search "Google" and the leader of Runet, the search engine "Yandex". In addition to these search engines, you can name a dozen more existing search engines, which we will talk about below.

Opinion: Search engines Google, Yandex and others are not generators (producers) of content, but aggregators (accumulators) of content and, in the bulk, other people's content. It is worth remembering that the use of someone else's content to create your own traffic and monetize it can be characterized as "piracy", which, of course, does not happen in practice.

Rating

 • and Google share the first two places of the leaders: about 49% and 45%.
 • Third place: Search Mail.ru about 3%;
 • The rest of the search engines float below 1%.

Looking at Google Analytics statistics:

 • yandex / organic 40.26%
 • google / organic 38.93%
 • mail.ru / organic 0.60%
 • rambler / organic 0.52%
 • bing / organic 0.12%

The statistics are relentless: Yandex searches are used the most, and if we consider that 3% is a good result compared to 45%, then the third most popular search is Mail.ru.

In this regard, the reasoning about the popularity of search engines other than Yandex and Google can be attributed to superstition, and the special promotion of sites in other search engines (not Yandex and Google) that do not deserve attention.

How search engines work

The question of how search engines work is as general as the question of "what color is the sky." If the sky is blue, then search engines collect information on the Internet, process it, rank it and give it to the user according to the search query.

The theory of Internet search is much more voluminous and cannot be stated in the article. However, the main points will come in handy:

Internet search engines do not store documents, that is, they do not download and upload documents completely to their repositories;

IRS use the Internet as a decentralized repository of documents. Search engines periodically crawl the Internet, select the information they need, according to their algorithms, and partially place it (information) in my database (Database). Hence, there are several problems:

 • IRS does not use all the information on the Internet for issuing, but only a part;
 • Internet information changes frequently. About 1500 thousand pages are added per day, hence the possible "empty issue";
 • There are a large number of duplicates (duplicate content). Unfortunately, I do not have accurate data on takes, and the figure of 25% of takes seems to be overstated;
 • A lot of advertisements, which are also bypassed by search engines;
 • The "wandering" of search robots in the network multiplies the load of non-resources (does not apply to search engines);
 • Most of the sites are commercial (about 83%), and have little informative value.

For these and some other reasons, the overwhelming majority of ISS on the Internet use a search engine, rather than the classical search scheme for information classification.

Keyword search features

Despite the changing algorithms of search engines, whose advertising tries to convince us that machines are becoming smarter and more intelligent, keyword searches are at the heart of search engines.

I like this keyword search scheme.

As you can see, the work of Internet search engines is based on the search for new documents (search robot Spider + Crawler), indexing of discovered documents (Indexer) and execution of a user query (Search Engine Results Engine). The names of the search robots used for these purposes are listed in brackets.

As I said, most search engines do not copy the full text of documents into their database. For search, when indexing a document, its search image is created. To organize the search by, the indexing robot creates a document image using the so-called derived method. That is, the title and a set of keywords are indicated in the image of the document.

However, it can be argued quite accurately that all IRS pay attention to the following:

 • The presence of the keyword in document;

The presence of the key in the URL or domain;

The presence of a key in a subheading;

The total number of keys on the page (density%);

The presence of keys in the description (description);

What web links lead to this page;

What internal links are there on this page.

Page ranking

At the end of the theory, it is worth mentioning about. More often, SERP ranking is referred to in the context of relevance. That is, search engines should build search results according to the most accurate match to the search query. As Yandex writes, nothing should be lost (completeness of the issue) and nothing extra should be found (accuracy of the issue). How this happens in practice, you see every day.

Conclusion

Internet search engines are complex software products, the work of which is provided by thousands of specialists and huge material resources.

Search engine algorithms are kept secret, although the basic accents of algorithm updates are public and have proper names.

Despite the different approach to the formation of search results, all search engines are based on the general principles of page indexing, which to this day remain basic for promotion.

Yandex search engine

The popular Runet search engine, which often becomes the most popular. The word Yandex does not mean anything, although it is generally believed that this is a transformation of the word "Index", or the phrase "yet another indexer". There is LOOK (the default search in the Tor browser, accessible from the regular Internet) or TORCH (one of the oldest search engines in the Tor network) and others. We settled on not Evil because of the unambiguous hint of Google (just look at the start page).

The better

Searches where Google, Yandex and other search engines are closed in principle.

Why do you need it

There are many resources on the Tor network that cannot be found on the law-abiding Internet. And their number will grow as the government tightens its control over the content of the Web. Tor is a kind of network within the Network with its own social networks, torrent trackers, media, marketplaces, blogs, libraries, and so on.

3. YaCy

What is it

YaCy is a decentralized search engine based on P2P networks. Each computer on which the main software module is installed scans the Internet independently, that is, it is an analogue of a search robot. The results obtained are collected in a common database, which is used by all participants in YaCy.

The better

It is difficult to say whether it is better or worse here, since YaCy is a completely different approach to organizing search. The absence of a single server and company-owner makes the results completely independent of someone's preferences. The autonomy of each node excludes censorship. YaCy is capable of searching the deep web and non-indexed public networks.

Why do you need it

If you are a supporter of open source and the free Internet, which is not influenced by government agencies and large corporations, then YaCy is your choice. It can also be used to organize searches within a corporate or other autonomous network. And while YaCy is not very useful in everyday life, it is a worthy alternative to Google in terms of the search process.

4. Pipl

What is it

Pipl is a system designed to search for information about a specific person.

The better

The authors of Pipl claim that their specialized algorithms search more efficiently than "regular" search engines. In particular, priority is given to social media profiles, comments, lists of participants and various databases where information about people is published, such as databases of court decisions. Pipl's leadership in this area has been validated by Lifehacker.com, TechCrunch and others.

Why do you need it

If you need to find information about a person living in the United States, then Pipl will be much more effective than Google. The databases of Russian courts are apparently inaccessible to a search engine. Therefore, he does not cope with the citizens of Russia so well.

What is it

FindSounds is another specialized search engine. Searches open sources for various sounds: house, nature, cars, people, and so on. The service does not support queries in Russian, but there is an impressive list of Russian-language tags that you can search for.

The better

The results are only sounds and nothing more. In the settings, you can set the desired format and sound quality. All found sounds are available for download. Search by pattern is available.

Why do you need it

If you need to quickly find the sound of a musket shot, the blows of a sucking woodpecker or the scream of Homer Simpson, then this service is for you. And we chose this only from the available Russian-language requests. In English, the spectrum is even wider.

Seriously, a specialized service assumes a specialized audience. But what if it comes in handy?

What is it

Wolfram | Alpha is a computational search engine. Instead of links to articles containing keywords, it provides a ready-made response to a user's request. For example, if you enter "compare the populations of New York and San Francisco" in English into the search form, Wolfram | Alpha will immediately display tables and graphs with a comparison.

The better

This service is better than others for finding facts and calculating data. Wolfram | Alpha collects and organizes knowledge available on the Web from a variety of fields, including science, culture and entertainment. If this database contains a ready-made answer to a search query, the system shows it; if not, it calculates and displays the result. In this case, the user sees only and nothing superfluous.

Why do you need it

If you are, for example, a student, analyst, journalist, or research scientist, you can use Wolfram | Alpha to find and calculate data related to your work. The service does not understand all requests, but it is constantly evolving and becoming smarter.

What is it

The Dogpile metasearch engine displays a combined list of results from search results from Google, Yahoo and other popular search engines.

The better

First, Dogpile displays fewer ads. Secondly, the service uses a special algorithm to find and show the best results from different search engines. According to the developers of Dogpile, their system generates the most complete search results on the entire Internet.

Why do you need it

If you cannot find information in Google or another standard search engine, search for it in several search engines at once using Dogpile.

What is it

BoardReader is a system for text search in forums, Q&A services and other communities.

The better

The service allows you to narrow the search field to social platforms. Thanks to special filters, you can quickly find posts and comments that match your criteria: language, publication date and site name.

Why do you need it

BoardReader can be useful for PR specialists and other media professionals who are interested in the opinion of the mass on certain issues.

Finally

The life of alternative search engines is often fleeting. Lifehacker asked Sergei Petrenko, the former general director of the Ukrainian branch of Yandex, about the long-term prospects of such projects.

Sergey Petrenko

Former CEO of Yandex.Ukraine.

As for the fate of alternative search engines, it is simple: to be very niche projects with a small audience, therefore, without clear commercial prospects, or, conversely, with complete clarity of their absence.

If you look at the examples in the article, you can see that such search engines either specialize in a narrow but demanded niche, which, perhaps only so far, has not grown enough to be noticeable on Google or Yandex radars, or they are testing an original hypothesis in ranking. which is not yet applicable in regular search.

For example, if a search on Tor suddenly turns out to be in demand, that is, results from there will be needed at least by a percentage of Google's audience, then, of course, ordinary search engines will begin to solve the problem of how to find and show them to the user. If the audience behavior shows that the results seem more relevant to a noticeable share of users in a noticeable number of queries, data without taking into account user-dependent factors, then Yandex or Google will begin to give such results.

“To be better” in the context of this article does not mean “to be better at everything”. Yes, in many aspects our heroes are far from Yandex (even Bing is far away). But on the other hand, each of these services gives the user something that the giants of the search industry cannot offer. Surely you also know similar projects. Share with us - we will discuss.

At first glance, it may seem that only Yandex can be better than Google, and even that is not a fact. These companies are investing huge amounts of money in innovation and development. Does anyone really have a chance not only to compete with the leaders, but also to win? Lifehacker's answer: "Yes!" There are several search engines that have succeeded. Let's take a look at our heroes.

What is it

It is a fairly well-known open source search engine. The cluster system makes it easy to manipulate search results. For example, Nigma collects results from online stores in a separate cluster. If you do not intend to buy something, then simply exclude this group. By choosing the "English-language sites" cluster, you will receive results in English only. The modules "Mathematics" and "Chemistry" will help schoolchildren.

Unfortunately, the project is currently not developing, as the developers have moved their activities to the Vietnamese market. Nevertheless, "Nigma" is not only not outdated, but in some things it still gives a head start to Google. But this did not last long: soon it became difficult for a person to navigate the diversity that appeared on the network in a short time.

And in order to somehow sort out the chaos, directories Yahoo, DMOZ and others (some exist to this day) were invented, in which the authors added and sorted the emerging sites into categories. For a while, life became easier.

But the Internet continued to expand and soon the size of the directories grew into something mind-bogglingly gigantic. Then the developers for the first time thought about searching inside directories, and only then about creating an automated indexing system for everything on the Internet in order to simplify the work of all users.

This is how the first search robots appeared.

Which search engine came first

The first search engine is considered Wandex (well, confused with Yandex!).This and other early services, of course, were far from perfect. On a search query, they gave out something completely different from what we are used to seeing now, i.e. not the most relevant pages, but all in a row, ignoring the ranking. On January 1, 2012, Wandex was relaunched.

This is how the first PS began its work.What are the search engineson the modern internet? I am attaching a list.

Search engines are: kings of the dance floor

Surprisingly, there are those who arguehow is the search engine better... I would not do this, simply for the reason that they are different and in general it all depends on the goal and what kind of user you are.

Yandex.

This is the most popular search engine in our country. LiveInternet claims that Yandex are used by 50.9%, while Google accounts for 40.6% (data from June 2015).

There is such a myth, they say, there are many times more commercial requests in Yandex than those of the closest competitor. A couple of times I came across the idea that due to the regionality perfected over the years, the type of audience or its number may differ - this is the reason for Yandex's superiority in commercial queries. So don't believe it. They lie.

Google

The Google search engine is the most popular everywhere except Russia :) It has a lot of possibilities in different directions. In general, the undisputed world leader among search robots.

Google itself appeared approximately along with Yandex, and came to us in Russia only in 2004, when Yandex strengthened its position.

The process of searching in Google has already become a household name for many earthlings. But when I tell my mother “Google”, she still goes to search for the information she needs in Yandex :) She does not know at allwhat search engines exist on the Internet.

What are the search engines: a list of little-known search engines

Most internet users don't even knowwhat are the search engines besides Yandexand Google. So here they are;) Meet!

The search share of this search engine can hardly be called large, but the indicators are slowly growing. Although one should not overlook the fact that these figures directly depend on Odnoklassniki, Mail.ru mail and other things from the Mail Corporation.

This is a real old school. Just imagine: when this search engine appeared, some SEOs were just learning to walk. In general, Rambler had a chance to rule the ball in, but this did not happen for a number of reasons. Currently, it is no longer quite a search engine, but a kind of set of services that use the Yandex engine as a search engine - for example, they have their own. The attendance, by the way, is quite decent: a little more than a million users visit the Rambler home page per day.

Rambler also has a version Rambler Lite (all the same, only without weather, news, advertising, etc.) and XRambler , which combines 15 search engines at once.

How many names this search engine has changed! For 8 years, he managed to vilify the name MSN Search, then Windows Live Search, then shortened the previous name to Live Search and now came to the name Bing. Many argue that search quality is close to Google's standard.

Now it is difficult to call Yahu a search engine, since according to the agreement, Bing's search engine is used at all sites owned by Yahu. The latest news about the contract can be found at Searchengines.

Webalta

Surely this so-called search engine is familiar to you. Did you have to pluck it like a tick from your browser?For a long time, everyone has known about the dark deeds of this search engine. Alas, nobody is interested in this PS. Users are only looking for articles on how to remove this rubbish from their computer.

Nygma

This search engine is vastly different from the rest. And if you won't surprise anyone with the index base of other search engines, then the ability to solve problems in chemistry and mathematics distinguishes Nigma from other PSs. Nigma also offers search for music, books, games and torrents.

The search engine, commissioned by the Russian government, is considered the world's first state-owned search engine. Offers a separate medical search (search for pharmacies, drugs, and disease articles). A very convenient topic with "Convenient Country", where all the recommendations that help a citizen are collected in one place. For example, the section “Documents”.

This PS is significantly different from thatwhat are the search engines on the Internet. DuckDuckGo - search engine open source and an interesting policy of not using the filter bubble. For those who do not know: a “filter bubble” is when a search engine shows in the search results only those search results that it (this PS) considers necessary for a specific user. At the same time, the opinion of the user himself does not interest anyone. DuckDuckGo makes sure that using their search engine will ensure that you get all the information the search engine has.

"Duck Duck Go" is gaining momentum. Already this summer (2015), the PS creator reported three billion requests in annual terms.

While writing this article, I had several questions. In such cases, I do not rely on the issuance, yes, and why, if there is a person next to me who knows everything about the Internet? Mini-interview with Igor Ivanov.

Igor Ivanov

Head of the SEMANTICA studio

If my site is in Google and Yandex, will my site be at the top of the search results in other, smaller search engines?

There is a very high probability that it will be so. Yandex and Google are developing their algorithms in the right direction and other search engines are following their example. There was a case when Google specialists noticed that the Bing search engine was not only copying their algorithms, but the search results.

Why probability and not complete certainty? Because other search engines will not have time to adjust their ranking algorithms to the standard set by their more successful competitors.

Is it worth promoting at all in Sputnik, Mile and other “our” search engines? Which search engine is the best?

A search engine is a database of specific information on the Internet. Many users believe that as soon as they enter a query into a search engine, they immediately start scanning the entire Internet, but this is not at all the case. The Internet is scanned constantly, by many programs, data about sites are entered into a database, where, according to certain criteria, all sites and all their pages are distributed into various kinds of lists and databases. That is, it is a kind of data filing cabinet, and the search does not take place on the Internet, but according to this filing cabinet.

Google is the most popular search engine in the world.

In addition to the search engine, Google offers many additional services, software and hardware, including a mail service, the Google Chrome browser, the largest youtube video library and many other projects.
