Few people pay attention to the emergence of new generations of operating systems. But the release of the Tizen OS with a GNU Linux license has become a real landmark event in the world of computers, mobile devices and even household appliances. Combining the efforts of Samsung and Intel corporations has created a completely new operating system based on a monolithic Linux kernel. So far, the Tizen operating system has not received much distribution (except in devices manufactured by Samsung), nevertheless, they predict a great future for it. But first, it’s worth understanding what this OS is and where it can be used.

Operating system Tizen: first acquaintance

The origin of the name of the new OS, as respected Internet resources make clear, is based on an abbreviation of three English words. Tie means "connection" or "binding", Rise - "ascent" or "resurrection", Zen - the name of the Eastern philosophy of Zen (probably, the simplicity and flexibility of concepts or the superiority of understanding of the intellect over the mind are implied).

The operating system Tizen (“Tyzen”) has Therefore, anyone can make their own changes to it. Under the same GNU Linux license, the system is freely distributed. But many users are still very cautious about the new product, even though Samsung has been actively implementing it in its devices since 2013.

Supported Devices

Initially, it was believed that the new development should become the basis for mobile devices as opposed to the existing Android OS. Over time, development has continued. "Smart" TVs with a new built-in operating system have become quite popular all over the world.

To date, you can find several major modifications, including support not only for TV panels or mobile gadgets, but also for tablets and even laptops. We are not yet talking about stationary PCs, although, apparently, this is not far off. The fact is that initially the system was focused on ARM and x86 processors. Based on this, it is not difficult to figure out that creating a version for the x64 architecture is practically a matter of time. True, in terms of competition with Windows, Linux or Mac OS X, the positions of Samsung Tizen look clearly losing.

Another thing is that the above systems are not used in household appliances. Here the development has occupied a free niche. The use of Samsung Tizen in Smart TV devices was truly a revolution, as the new system turned out to be quite independent and autonomous.

History of creation

The history of the creation of the new OS says that it became the successor not only to the Linux kernel, but also to systems such as MeeGo, Bada and LiMa (not to mention the fact that many compare it with Android development).

For the first time, this system was talked about in 2011, when the Linux Foundation and LiMo Foundation presented their open source development in the form of the Tizen OS. The project was headed by the monsters of the computer world - Samsung and Intel corporations. The second, by the way, judging by the statements, intends to quite seriously reorient one of the market segments to this particular system, including automotive systems.

And it is not surprising that at the moment the Tizen operating system, which is constantly being improved and tested, has twelve companies as developers and manufacturers of supported devices, among which the most significant are Nissan, Land Rover, Toyota, not counting such giants as Fujitsu or NVIDIA .

System versions

Constantly coming out versions of the new OS could not but unite the developers. So, the newly created Tizen Association included developers who are on the staff of other companies. But the first announcement of the system is usually dated September 27, 2011. Version 1.0 was named Lacspur. It officially came out in 2012 (April 30). The OS was distinguished by the fact that it supported HTML5, W3C, OpenGL and WebRTC. In addition, a special package for developers in the form of an SDK was released.

The second modification 2.0, called Magnolia, received updated support for the Web Framework and could use additional API tools that allowed access to wireless modules (Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth), calendar, contacts, call logs and other settings on mobile devices. It was later modified to version 2.1 of Nectarine, which differed mainly in the extension of the API tools and was only supported by Samsung RD-PQ and RD-210 developer-only systems.

And only the release of version 3.0 in 2013 became the breakthrough that everyone was waiting for with such impatience. Although the system was initially targeted at Galaxy S4 mobile devices, the announced version had the advantage of being able to be used on netbooks, laptops or tablets.

Android was not here and there

Samsung Tizen on mobile devices is being compared by some skeptics to Android systems. Indeed, at first glance, the differences are quite difficult to notice. But here you need to clearly realize that all Linux-like systems (by the way, based on UNIX code) have an almost identical interface.

First of all, the differences that this, mind you, open operating system has, are that absolutely all the drivers for the intended devices were written, as they say, from scratch. In addition, unlike Android, the Tizen operating system lacks support for the already boring Java machine, but is capable of working with JavaScript. In a sense, this can be called a minus, but there are a couple of trump cards up the sleeve.

The fact is that the system was originally conceived as a tool in the form of webOS. Such attempts have been made by many developers (Google Chrome OS, Firefox OS). But this system has gone much further, thanks to the fact that any developer can use application programming based on the CSS/JavaScript/HTML5 bundle. In addition, a set of native development tools based on the C ++ language has become a real find for many programmers.

Key Features

As for the system itself, it can be considered using the example of launching on mobile devices. The first thing that catches your eye is the greeting, which is made in the form of a simple menu in which you can select a specific setting item or function used.

On smartphones, there is a special Tizen Store application (app store). Of course, while it is still being improved in terms of adding the same multimedia content, nevertheless, there are means for developers to monetize and even place their own mobile developments in the form of paid publications with support for embedding in other official Samsung applications. True, some users may perceive this as the presence of advertising, but, alas, this cannot be avoided.

Smart TV Tizen

Television panels deserve special attention. Compared to the previous HUB, when the main menu occupied the entire screen, and to access the functions you had to interrupt the viewing of the current program, the new system has become more flexible.

The new menu is presented in the form of icons, and to access a particular function, you do not need to go to various subsections. Everything is, as they say, at hand. But what is the whole "trick" - management can be carried out in several ways.

The classic way is to use the remote control. But, thanks to the cameras installed on some models of smart TVs, the user can quite easily use navigation using gestures or voice commands. And the menu entry itself can be blocked. Thus, the Tizen operating system on the TV plays a dual role - both a control tool and a protection tool. And if you synchronize the panel with a smartphone, in general, there are more than enough advantages. "Smart" TVs of the Smart TV standard perceive the corresponding devices even as ordinary remote controls, apart from the use of other functions.

Additional support questions

Unfortunately, this OS has not yet received wide distribution, although the declared capabilities are much higher than that of other systems of this rank.

So far, the impasse is connected only with the fact that, despite the declared support from eminent hardware manufacturers, only Samsung Corporation implements this type of software and only on its devices. Therefore, it is skeptical at best to treat the fact that devices will be released in the near future, in which the Tizen operating system will be used as a control platform.

But it does have some interesting features. On the TV panel, you can use the Quick Connect function to transfer data from a smartphone or tablet to the panel, split the screen into parts (Multi-link Screen), use the Smart HUB platform with games and applications, as well as - GameFlyStreaming - passing games without using consoles in general.

Is everything good?

All of the above advantages seem to be in favor of the new OS. But it is not known for certain whether it was tested for the effects of viruses and malicious codes. It is not worth assuming that, like any Linux system, it is initially protected. Firstly, this operating system is open source, and no one will stop a third-party developer from making changes to it to such an extent as to gain access to confidential information. The same location of the user can be determined quite simply.

In addition, even the developers themselves point out that on some TV models, the system may “freeze” due to instability. And it is impossible to “reflash” old models of Samsung TV panels in any way.

To use the system or not?

However, if you weigh all the pros and cons, you can use the new software platform, despite the fact that it has not (yet) been widely used. Considering that Samsung will implement this system everywhere, it looks very doubtful that it will be isolated from the global community of hardware manufacturers and software developers. Therefore, with a fairly high degree of probability, it can be argued that in the near future, some giants in the market of mobile devices, computers and software products will have to move, to put it mildly (of course, if they do not create anything newer).

Today we will talk about the still not very well-known Tizen operating system (Taizen), which is designed to become the most versatile among existing mobile platforms. Tizen OS is based on the Linux kernel and is open source.

As already mentioned, the Taizen operating system is positioned as universal and is suitable for installation on smartphones, tablets, TVs, car devices, computers, cameras and other devices, the list of which is constantly updated.

The Taizen operating system is being developed by such market giants as Samsung, Intel, Acer, Panasonic, Asus and others with the support of the Linux Foundation, who have joined forces to promote the new platform.

Today, there are already several devices that are based on the new platform.

Let's learn more about the Tizen operating system and see what the developers have achieved in the process of working on it.

General information.

In addition to the traditional operating systems Android, iOS and Windows Phone, there are several lesser known operating systems, including Tizen OS, which is under development. Another example is Firefox OS, which will be used on smartphones in the lower price segment. The interface of the Taizen platform resembles the well-known Android, but one way or another is not its offshoot.

Tizen OS was created completely from scratch. The platform works on devices with x86 processors and ARM architectures. The peculiarity of the new platform is based on the web technology for creating applications, using which the created applications will be cross-platform. Considering one of the innovations of HTML5, applications can work without a network connection, i. offline. And with the development of the Application Compatibility Layer by OpenMobile, it becomes possible to run Android applications on Tizen OS with 100% compatibility. The browser integrated into the system, which is based on the WebKit2 core, has full support for the HTML5 standard. all features are already implemented in the rendering core itself.

TizenOS interface.

The interface of the Tizen platform looks almost the same as the popular and well-known Android, but in fact there are fundamental differences between them. All screenshots are taken from the official Tizen 2.2.1 platform emulator.

The lock screen displays the current time and date, as well as an icon to unlock the device. The screen is unlocked using a swipe to the right, after which we get to the application menu. The shape of the application icons is round, the icons themselves are well drawn and look quite good.

There are still few standard applications available. The operating system interface is made in bright colors. At the top there is a notification bar. The system is multilingual and supports the native Russian language.

App Store Tizen Store.

There are no applications for Tizen OS, one might say. But for their distribution, there is its own Tizen Store store, which will definitely be pre-installed on each device. Nothing can be downloaded from the store yet, but developers can download their own applications.

The Tizen Store app store will be open to users at the same time that the first Tizen-based device, which will be Samsung Z (we will talk about it later), goes on sale.

The store is operated by Samsung. To attract developers for Tizen applications, various competitions with large prize funds were held. All this was done for users who need to offer a lot of applications and games when the store opens.

Devices running on Tizen OS.

It is noteworthy that several large manufacturers became interested in the new Tizen platform, namely Samsung, Panasonic, Huawei, Intel and others.

It became known that Samsung will not release its devices with the Android operating system. The Tizen platform should be such a platform that is able to unite all devices under the Samsung brand into one category. A start has been made, but the date of termination of support for the Android OS by Samsung has not yet been determined.

So, the first smartphone on the Tizen platform will be Samsung Z. The smartphone will be equipped with a 4.8″ Super Amoled touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. The hardware of the smartphone has a quad-core processor with a clock speed of 2.3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal memory with support for microSD memory cards up to 64 GB. The main camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels, autofocus and LED flash, and the front camera has a resolution of 2.1 megapixels.

Samsung Z supports 3G/4G, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, NFC, GPS/GLONASS and IR module to use your smartphone as a remote control. Of the sensors available accelerometer, compass, barometer, heart rate sensor and fingerprint scanner. The battery capacity of the smartphone is 2600 mAh.

The Samsung Z smartphone will be running Tizen OS 2.2.1. The device will be available in gold and black colors.

Smartphone sales will begin in Russia, presumably in the third quarter of this year. Following them, smartphones from Huawei should appear on sale, a prototype of one of them is presented below.

Recently, the list of companies interested in the new platform has been replenished with another well-known name. The Taiwanese manufacturer HTC has become interested in the production of smartphones based on Tizen, unfortunately, more details are not yet known.

Acer, Asus and Intel are going to release several models of portable computers (netbooks and ultrabooks) based on the Tizen platform by the end of this year.

Among the cameras (smart cameras), the Samsung NX300 and Samsung NX2000 mirrorless cameras, the software of which is based on the use of elements of the Tizen platform, were the first to enter the market. And the advanced Samsung NX300M smart camera is powered by the Tizen Camera Platform, which is based entirely on the new Tizen system. This year, several more cameras on Tizen OS were introduced - these are Samsung NX30, Samsung NX Mini and Samsung NX3000.



Samsung wearable devices such as the second-generation Samsung Gear 2 and Samsung Gear 2 Neo smartwatches operate on this operating system. Recently, a firmware update was also released for the first generation Samsung Galaxy Gear watch, which now runs on Tizen OS, and not on Android OS, as it was before.

Samsung announced plans to release a special SDK with which you can create applications for smart TVs based on the Tizen platform, which were demonstrated in early June this year. It will support the control of the TV using gestures and voice, as well as the connection of the TV with smartphones and wearable devices. The SDK should appear before the end of the summer of this year, but the date of entry into the sale of smart TVs is still unknown.

In early 2014, Samsung introduced the WW9000 smart washing machine, which runs on the Tizen OS platform. One of the features of which allows you to control the washing machine from your smartphone. Samsung also plans to release a refrigerator and a printer on the Tizen system. Samsung is also in talks to merge with various manufacturers and suppliers of smart home solutions and equipment.

At the moment, a project is being developed that will be used in transport infotainment systems - these are cars, aircraft and other vehicles. In the fall of 2013, KAMAZ OJSC and Intel presented a joint project - an on-board infotainment system based on Tizen OS.

Several giant companies are working on the development of Tizen OS at once, and the advantage of this system is the interest in it by several world market players at once, led by Samsung and Intel. By the way, the total number of partner companies of the Tizen platform is 36 participants.

Taizen does not support the boring Java machine, which only benefits in speed. The operating system was entirely created using web technologies, however, it is possible to develop applications for it not only on the basis of HTML, but also using C ++ native development tools.

A free reading of this name in a Russian way rooted the name Tizen, although, of course, Taizen would be more correct. Samsung uses this OS, which is based on Linux, for smartphones, smart watches and, of course, in Smart TVs. The TVs come preloaded with Amazon Video, HBO Now, YouTube, Netflix, and more.
The new version of Tizen 4.0 features a simple Samsung interface. Large icons were used as shortcuts. Now it is possible to keep track of the applications used, as well as save the last of the viewed lists. This OS became the basis for creating a system designed to control a smart home, in which any element can be controlled from a television remote control.

webOS (LG)

The year of development of this operating system was 2014. The speed of today's version of webOS 3.5 has increased significantly. This system covers not as impressive a number of television receivers as Android TV, but the list of applications used in this version will be of interest to many.

Among them:

  • Magic Zoom, with which it is possible to enlarge the image on the screen. This does not compromise quality.
  • Magic Mobile Connection, which allows you to combine the TV into a single whole with a smartphone.

Roku TV (TCL, Hisense, Sharp)

However, one must understand that connecting these set-top boxes to an obsolete TV is not possible, which means it is time to replace it. Today, the cost of a smart TV cannot be called extremely high, and therefore its acquisition will not make a huge gap in the family budget. And yet, in fairness, it must be said that cost is a key factor characterizing the quality of any individual smart TV.

In 2015, TV manufacturers released new operating systems for Smart TV 2015. At the beginning of the year, the main manufacturers showed their new developments that they are currently making and create the main competition for the Smart TV platform.

Let's note four obvious favorites, which, no doubt, will fight for the title of the most comfortable, active and productive OS for consumer electronics. This is the well-known Android TV system from Google, which any manufacturer can use if desired, webOS from LG, Tizen - a joint development of Samsung and Intel, as well as the less common Firefox OS, which, despite the unavailability of booming marketing firms, very quickly gaining popularity among developers and users.

Let's take a closer look at each operating system.


Tizen

Tizen is a new operating system from Samsung based on the Linux kernel. And can use a wide range of devices, including smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, and car infotainment devices, computers, Blu-ray players, in general, any smart device.

Tizen will be coming to 2015 models, so we can't speculate on how the final variant will work, although we can learn from what Samsung showed us at CES 2015. select one of the four white symbols on the main TV screen. These symbols are at the top (menu), bottom (smart), left (volume controls), and right (channel options).

To enter the Smart Hub, use the old-fashioned Smart Hub button on the remote control. The Smart Hub is essentially a docking station that appears at the bottom of the screen. And shows the content of widgets in the form of colorful icons.

You can use the remote control as a pointer to scroll through the icons in the Smart Hub dock. If you don't like using the pointer feature, you can always use voice commands (via the microphone buttons on the remote) or the physical left and right arrow buttons on the remote.

Interface control is standard, using the navigation keys of the control panel.

Content. The "Recent" section of Smart Hub not only shows you the most recently used apps, but also the channels you've recently viewed. The Popular section in Smart Hub is more like a Samsung showcase.

The "Recommended" section also provides access to the Tizen App Store, Game Library, Samsung Service, Search, Web Browser, Notification Center, and third-party partner services such as MgO, PlayStation, and Amazon Instant Video.

It's not yet clear if it's possible to remove or change all the icons that populate the Popular section, but it's possible to pin apps as well as remove icons in the Recent section. To delete them all, just scroll right and select the "Clear" icon.


LG webOS 2.0

LG, Samsung's main competitor, has announced a new updated version of its webOS. The operating system - called webOS 2.0 - will grace the 2015 TV lineup. The platform was originally used for smartphones, but in 2014 LG started using the OS in Smart TVs.

User interface

Users really liked webOS. Because of this, LG has not changed the user interface. They just added new features and made webOS 2.0 much faster. We are also greeted by a stylish home screen with a bottom menu in the form of diamonds and a live broadcast in the background. The new feature to launch is called "My Channels". This allows you to save your bookmarks of your favorite channels.

Android TV

Android TV is the successor to Google TV. Designed to run on TVs and streaming media devices, developed by Google.

While Android TV officially launched in October 2014 via the Nexus Player (a Google and Asus set-top box that connects to your TV), a number of other companies - including Sony, Philips, and Sharp - introduced new TVs running Android TV at CES 2015.

User interface

Android TV is easy to learn and use. When you start your TV or set-top box, you will see the main window / home screen. Moving occurs on sections (lines) from left to right. The first line of recently viewed applications. The second line is a list of all the applications that you have downloaded, and below you will see a list of all downloaded games. At the very bottom is access to the settings.

Android TV supports voice commands if you have the right hardware. For voice search, you can use the Nexus remote with built-in microphone, or Sony's One-Flick remote with built-in microphone.

Both regular commands with the names of games, applications, etc. are supported, as well as more complex queries, like "all movies from 1989". The search returns links not only on Google Play, but also on Netflix, Hulu, and other apps.

Chromecast

If you don't own an Android TV but want to watch content from your laptop or mobile device on your TV, Google's Chromecast is here to help. Chromecast technology is already built into Android TV, with it you can cast videos, music, browser tabs from any device, and even broadcast the screen of a mobile device to a TV.


Firefox OS

Mozilla's Firefox OS is based on the Linux kernel and can be used by a wide range of devices including smartphones, tablets and TVs.

Panasonic, using Firefox OS, radically changed their Smart TV interface and showed it at CES 2015, with My Home Screen 2.0. The new system looks decent and is significantly different from previous releases.

Each section also has its own navigation categories. For example, entering the application catalog, Firefox OS will prompt you to select a category from the list of additional menus.

It is noteworthy that the operating system allows you to transfer shortcuts for applications to the desktop, much like it is implemented on mobile devices. Voice Search not only shows results from third-party apps such as YouTube, but also connected USB devices and a web browser.
