How to record a conversation on the phone. Manufacturer's technical limitations of recording telephone conversations

The need to record an android conversation can arise for various reasons. For example, you have an important call, the details of which you want to keep. Modern mobile devices are equipped with functional software that allows you to record telephone conversations without installing additional applications.

Automatic call recording android

On an android phone *, you can easily record phone conversations * using standard options. Not all owners of devices on the Android platform know that absolutely all telephone conversations can be recorded.

Let's take a closer look at how to do this:

  • Select the desired subscriber from the list of contacts or enter the person's number manually;
  • Activate the call;
  • Immediately after the call goes, an additional "More" menu will open on the screen, open it;
  • Select the "Voice Recorder" command.

After a series of these simple steps, an automatic recording of the conversation will begin. After pressing the end call button, the recording stops.

How to listen to recorded phone conversations

As practice shows, difficulties can arise not only directly with the creation of an audio file, but also with its search. There are two options for listening to the recording. The easiest one is to open the log of recent calls and click on a special icon that marks all recorded conversations. The audio file will open automatically.

But this method is not always convenient to use, especially if you need to find a record of a telephone conversation that took place a long time ago. To find the information you need, go to the "Tools" menu and select "My files". In the audio folder you can find the file you want. Another way to save is the folder Android - Call Recording.

The file with the recording of the conversation on the phone in the future can be moved from the device memory to the memory card, it can be sent to another user.

Users often need to record telephone conversations, but many do not even know how to do this. They usually turn to third-party software for help, but often they don't need to. Why? Because most models of smartphones support call recording with built-in software. Today we will consider several options for recording a telephone conversation.

Phone call recording using firmware

As mentioned above, almost all modern models support call recording, that is, no third-party programs need to be installed on the phone.

Of course, the exact diagram depends on the model of your smartphone, so let's look at a few of the most common options.

In the first version, you can see the "Recording" icon right on the screen of your phone. As soon as the subscriber picks up the phone, press the "Record" button and the conversation starts to be recorded. Very easy and simple.

But it's not always that simple. Sometimes the "Record" or "Voice Recorder" button is simply not available in the menu, so you might think that it is impossible to record a conversation. But this is not the case. Here's an example on Android 4.2.2.

Look, you are dialing a number, but none of the buttons means the conversation is being recorded.

Where is she? In fact, the talk button is hidden. When the subscriber picks up the phone, you will need to press the "Menu" button, which is located under the screen (less often - at the bottom of the screen), after which the button for recording the conversation will appear, which you will have to press.

For smartphones Samsung Galaxy the following scheme is relevant: during a call, you need to press and hold the "Menu" button, which is located under the screen. A menu will appear in which you need to click on the "Dictaphone" or "Dict." But please note that not all Samsung phones (and not only Samsung) have such a button - in some countries, the recording of conversations is prohibited at the level of legislation, so this function is blocked by default. There is nothing surprising.

Recording a telephone conversation using third-party software

If you did not find the built-in call recording function on your phone, then you have a direct path to the Google Play Market. You will find many call recording apps here.

We will look at an example based on the Automatic Call Recorder application.

Install and run the application. Now, when making calls, you will see a red icon in the top bar. This means that the automatic recording of the conversation has started, you do not need to press anything additionally.

After the conversation, you see a recording of the conversation.

Of course, you can choose any application you like.

Sometimes an important conversation needs to be recorded. Especially if there is no way to remember to the end information, without which responsible work is impossible, for example, collecting news from news agencies to the editorial office of a newspaper, calling the authorities for instructions, and the like. Or you just need to record the call to have any proof. Special applications for devices based on the Android operating system will help you with this.

Manufacturer's technical limitations of recording telephone conversations

In some countries, recording telephone conversations is illegal. Manufacturers, instead of setting up each of the smartphone or mobile models imported into a particular country, erase the software components of the Android operating system responsible for recording telephone conversations. If none of the applications for recording a telephone conversation work, change the firmware and the Android kernel or the gadget itself.

Android apps for recording phone conversations

There are many applications for recording calls on Android, but the easiest way is to use the internal resources of your smartphone.

Call recording without additional applications

Built-in call recording function is suitable for one-time call recording.

This method is the simplest. The resulting recordings can be converted to any audio format using third-party audio converters that are not included with the built-in Android phone recorder.

Call Recorder

The Call Recorder application is configured as follows:

Play, save, erase - all these functions are available

The application keeps a history of recorded conversations, allows you to add the "recorded" person to the list of prohibited for recording - or, conversely, take this person on "auto-listening" (recording with him is turned on immediately, regardless of whether he called you or you yourself "Typed": you do not need to press the record button).

The program takes a photo of this person's call.

The photo will also be saved - and shown in the recording history

Convenient storage of records allows you to find each of them very quickly.

Listening to recordings from history

The app has a button bar on the Android desktop - just like similar screen recorder apps. You can enter the call history after the end of the conversation by clicking on the "tube" icon.

Click on the "tube" icon to view the recording history

Another good program for recording mobile calls with a simple name is Call Recorder.

  1. Launch Call Recorder app after installation. Open the main settings.

Launch Call Recorder app after installation

  2. Enter the recording settings.

    Enter recording settings

  3. Choose the best recording method. The difference between the standard one and the rest is that the recording is simplex (only what you say into the microphone, the interlocutor may not record from the earpiece). The rest of the methods (CAF, ALSA and MSM) - make the recording better and deprive it of the "simplex" of a telephone conversation, but you need to "patch" (make changes) the Android kernel and get Root rights on the device.

Select the one you need if you have Root

  4. Select the recording format. WAV is considered the best - it can be uncompressed (maximum audio stream speed).

Click on any of the items in this menu

  5. The developers paid a lot of attention to security settings in Call Recorder. If you lose your password, the records of your conversations on the smartphone protected by it may turn out to be unreadable.

First of all, safety when recording conversations

  6. Additional options, such as auto-start recording when the talk timer is activated, may not work on some devices. It is necessary, again, not only to have Root privileges, but also to patch the Android firmware kernel on the device.

  7. Set up the storage of conversation recordings, improve their classification and archiving in a folder by attributes. It is best to save your recordings to an SD card.

Set the optimal parameters for maximum convenience in the application

  8. Set up the playback of the recorded recordings.

  9. Be careful about entering your password if you use password protection to prevent strangers from eavesdropping on your conversations on the line.

Enter your password to keep your calls private

  10. So, the settings are complete, you can call. A green dot during a conversation means that the recording is currently in progress. The application will also take a photo of your call, if the subscriber has been assigned a photo in contacts.

  11. The recording will be available immediately after the end of the current call.

Select any of the recordings to listen to

Call Recorder, despite its high cost, is a great program. Even "treating" your smartphone, if something was missing in it, is worth it for the sake of this application.

Other applications for recording calls on mobile

There are dozens of applications for recording telephone conversations. Several more of them have the same name - Call Recorder. They all work from the built-in drivers and libraries of the Android operating system. It is thanks to this opportunity that the recording of mobile conversations from an Android gadget is available.

You will not be able to record conversations if the manufacturer has erased the drivers and libraries from the Android system kernel from the smartphone - you need to install the "custom" (custom) Android kernel before changing the firmware.

All programs for recording telephone conversations are available at PlayMarket.

Recording a conversation is not a problem, given the capabilities of modern gadgets. For this, there are both third-party programs and the capabilities of Android itself. This function is useful when you need to remember a large amount of information. The main thing is not to violate a person's right to make personal calls.

The beauty of Android is that even if your smartphone is not endowed with some of the features you need, you can simply expand the list of its functions using the store. What can you not find there! How about recording your talks? During a conversation, important information may slip through that you could not remember or even hear, and it may be convenient to be able to listen to the recording.

As you might have guessed, this is possible with Android. Please note that in many countries it is illegal to record telephone conversations unless the other person is warned that the conversation will be recorded. Now that you are informed, you can follow this link on Google Play for the Automatic Call Recorder app.

This app doesn't just record calls. It has enough features to keep you comfortable. For example, you can automatically save recordings not only locally on your device, but also to Dropbox or Google Drive. This is convenient if you want to access recordings from other devices. Three audio formats are supported: 3GP, AMR and WAV.

Time to talk about how the application works. After you finish the setup, it will automatically start and start recording as soon as you make or receive a call. In order for you to understand that the recording is in progress, a red indicator will light up in the notification area. As soon as you finish speaking, you will receive a notification that the recording is ready. By clicking on the notification, you can add a note to the recording, save it, listen to it, or delete it.

That, in fact, is all. Automatic Call Recorder performs exactly one function, but the way it is implemented in the application makes it one of the most elegant and convenient methods of recording conversations.

Based on materials from PhoneArena

Recording a conversation is a function that is rarely used in everyday life, but sometimes it can seriously make a person's life easier. A business conversation, where a lot of information, difficult to remember, but necessary for a person, such as telephone numbers, or an openly criminal situation with threats on the phone, flashes - there are thousands of reasons to use this function. Fortunately, in the era of smartphones, phone calls can be recorded without the need for third-party devices; however, there are some difficulties here, and detailed instructions for Android will not hurt.

Why problems arise

The first step is to take it for granted: not all phones can record sound calmly and without problems. This is due to the fact that in many countries secret sound recording is a matter of jurisdiction. The manufacturer, when releasing a phone, cannot predict whether the buyer will use the ability to record sound for criminal purposes, therefore, just in case, it disables or limits this possibility at the level of the primary components of the operating system in advance. That is why, on some models, no audio recording software will work at all, or will work with significant restrictions.

The list of such models (incomplete, since users have not tested call recording on all phones) can be found in the table.

How to record a phone conversation on Android - instructions

Built-in tools

The manufacturer does not always strive to limit the user's ability to record a telephone conversation. Some, on the contrary, build such a function into the firmware so that calls can be recorded without installing third-party software. It is easy to check if this is possible on a specific device: just look at the call menu during a call. If the function of recording a conversation in the firmware is present, among the buttons "Loudspeaker", "Enter number" and others there will be a button that will be called "Record", "Dictaphone", Record or similar. For example, in the picture below, the conversation will be recorded by the Record key.

To start recording a call, you must press the Record button

In a number of firmwares, some of the call menu functions have been removed under the "More" button, it is also called More and "Additional features". Sound recording is sometimes hidden under it. Here, to check if audio can be recorded, you first need to click on this button. If the firmware has the ability to write, then it is most likely to be found among the additional features. In the image, the button responsible for recording a conversation is called "Start recording".

What the button looks like and where to find it, you can see the photo instructions:

After the conversation is over, you can listen to the recorded audio file. At this point, many users have a question: where to find it? The call menu itself does not provide such an opportunity, however, there are several ways to find a lost record.

  1. The very first and easiest way is to find an audio recording through a voice recorder. On some firmwares, the built-in dictaphone allows you not only to record sound, but also listen to the recordings. Sometimes telephone conversations may also be included in the list of recorded materials. True, not in every version of the system the voice recorder provides such an opportunity.
  2. Some file browsers or audio players have an auto-search function for media files. For example, the custom ES Explorer or the built-in music player of Sony phones has such functionality. Here, too, everything is simple: just turn on autosearch and find audio recordings that resemble the desired calls by name and duration.
  3. If the previous methods are not available for some reason, you can follow the difficult path and try to find the audio recording yourself. On "pure" Android, phone call records are located at sdcard / PhoneRecord by default, but if everything were that simple, the previous points would not be needed. The problem is that, depending on the version of the system and firmware, the folder containing the entries and the path to it may be named completely differently. For example, on Xiaomi devices, call recordings are stored in MIUI / sound_recorder / call_rec. However, you should not despair: the name of the folder containing the sound recordings usually contains the words record, recorder recording, and so on, so you can be guided by them in searches.
  4. When all else fails, you can use the cunning method. To view all the audio recordings on the phone, just connect this phone to the computer and enable the search on the device for files with the .mp3 extension (or another, depending on which extension the sound is saved in on a particular phone). But if you have a lot of audio files on your phone, it can be very difficult to find the one you want.

Applications for recording telephone conversations

The phone does not allow you to record calls via the call menu? - what a pity. However, this is not a verdict: if the device is not included in the "black list" of phones on which it is impossible to record conversations, then this can be easily done using special applications that are presented in the Play Market in large quantities.

Call recorder

A simple and unpretentious application called Call Recorder (depending on the firmware and localization of Google Play, it can also be called Call Recorder).

It should be noted that there are hundreds of applications with this name in the Play Market, so it is better to clarify: now we are talking about Call Recorders from C Mobile.

The functionality is appropriate: recording a conversation in automatic mode, the ability to listen to and delete the audio recordings made. In addition, depending on the version of the application, you can share the recordings * and you can choose which call to save and which not (if this function is disabled, all records are saved automatically; if enabled, after each call the application asks if the user wants to save call). In the settings, you can also set a password for the application so that no one else can gain access to the recordings, select the location where the made audio will be saved, their format (MP4 and 3GP are supported) and the recording source (telephone line, microphone, etc.). It is possible to listen to audio recordings using another application and synchronize data with the cloud.

The application interface is rather laconic: to enable call recording, you just need to switch one toggle switch in the main application window. The rest of the capabilities are configured in the corresponding menu items: "Memory" is responsible for the location of saving audio recordings, "Synchronization" - for synchronization with cloud storage (Dropbox and Google Drive are supported), "Settings" - for the settings of the entire application, from recording format to recording notifications sound.

* - we kindly ask you to pay attention that, according to the legislation of the Russian Federation, the recording of conversations in itself is not illegal. However, cases when the owner of an audio recording shares it with third parties without the consent of another participant in the dialogue are regarded as a violation of the right to privacy of correspondence:

Everyone has the right to privacy of correspondence, telephone conversations, postal, telegraph and other messages. Limitation of this right is allowed only on the basis of a court decision.

CallU

Like most such programs, it provides only a limited number of functions, but their list is wider: for example, there is a filter that allows you to choose for which contacts calls will be recorded, as well as additional conveniences such as the ability to enable call recording by shaking the phone (shaking sensitivity adjustable in the application settings). You can change the recording quality and add text notes. Supports MP3 and WAV formats.

The rest of the functionality is very similar to the previous application: the same password protection, the same choice of recording source, the same synchronization with cloud storage (Dropbox and Google Drive are supported in the same way).

A nice bonus: when you click on any menu item, a drop-down help will appear explaining how to use this function. For beginners, this can be very convenient.

Automatic call recorder

One of the most popular applications for recording phone calls, released by the manufacturer Appliquato. Its fame is associated with flexible settings, a convenient and concise interface, as well as the fact that, according to user reviews, it works seamlessly on a large number of devices. It is worth noting that Google Play translates its name into Russian as "Call Recorder", that is, just like the previous applications: you can get confused.

The functionality is impressive: a relatively large selection of audio formats for saving, several standard recording configurations to choose from, the ability to increase the volume of a conversation at the time of recording to record sound in the best quality, and mysterious "experimental functions" for playing audio ... True, the ability to choose the sound quality and protect information with a password is sorely lacking.

A distinctive feature of this application is the large number of signal sources. It is worth noting that some of them are not supported on very many phones (for example, Voice UpLink and Voice DownLink). The most popular source is Voice Communications: it allows you to record both the voice of the owner of the phone and the voice of the interlocutor. Most of the additional sources are designed to optimize performance on devices where recording from standard sources does not work or works poorly.

In addition, users complain about annoying ads that are disabled only when purchasing the full version. I must say, this problem occurs in other free applications, as well as the limitation of some functions in the free version of the program. Luckily, audio recording apps are inexpensive.

The records made are stored in the application for some time, but after reaching a certain "limit" they are deleted, overwritten by other, newer records. To prevent this and not to lose an important record, you can save it separately: in this case, it will appear in the "Saved calls" section.

There is a kind of filter. Simply put, there are three main recording modes: recording all calls, recording calls only from contacts marked in advance, recording all calls from contacts that are not in the address book.

You can sync data with cloud storage, connect an external playback source, change the storage location of files and attach a text note to the recording. In addition, there is an unusual feature: you can enable or disable sound recording when connected via Bluetooth.

Supported formats: AMR, 3GP, AAC, AAC2, WAV.

Photo Gallery: How to Record Audio in Automatic Call Recorder

Total Call Recorder

Another application similar to the previous one in its unobtrusiveness and brevity. There are fewer supported formats, there are no interesting features like shake recording or standard configurations, but there is a call filter, implemented more fully than in the previous application, and here you can also change the sound sampling rate. The list of signal sources is almost the same as in the previous application, from there the possibilities of increasing the volume, connecting a third-party music player and setting up recording with Bluetooth have migrated.

Recording works according to the already familiar principle: it is enough to switch a single toggle switch, which is in the "Settings", and all calls that have passed the filter will be automatically recorded and shown in the application.

It is possible to change the maximum number of conversations stored in the memory. For owners of the free version, the upper level of this number is limited to 500 calls, in the Pro version it can be increased indefinitely.

You can put a password for the application, but this function is available only in the paid version of the application. Advertising is also present here.

Supported extensions: WAV, AMR, 3GPP.

Call Recorder by skvalex

This little-known application is included here for a reason. It has one feature that favorably distinguishes this program from the mass of analogues. This is an opportunity (in some cases) to bypass the manufacturer's restriction on call recording. In all other respects, Call Recorder is just a very high-quality paid application that will allow you to record a telephone conversation. True, with a wide, not everyone understandable functionality, with which it would not hurt to figure it out before use.

As for the main functions, everything is clear at first glance: recording, listening, saving, deleting, protecting recordings and synchronizing with the cloud. Since the application is paid, the service here is at its best: you can independently set a template for the names of the saved audio, there are wide settings for the audio player (up to built-in decoders!) And advanced password settings. Instead of shaking, there is an additional button "Start recording", which appears in the call menu during a conversation (the user can set the position of the button on the screen by himself). In addition, the filter here is really powerful: separate filter settings for incoming and outgoing calls and the ability to add "exceptions" that will not be affected by the standard filter rules.

In addition, the application implements wide settings for notifications, actions "before" and "after" a call, as well as several design options and recording sources to choose from.

Supported recording formats: WAV, MP3, AAC, AMR, FLAC. There are additional settings for each format.

Photo gallery: instructions for the Call Recorder application

At the first launch, the application displays a help explaining that the Main menu of the application will be displayed here, from here you can access all the functions The application supports five formats for recording audio
Setting up the filter of incoming calls: who to record, who not Setting up the filter of outgoing calls: you can select which type of calls will be recorded Here you can set up filter, exceptions, delay, etc.
Here you can configure where records are saved, auto-delete, storage time, etc. Ability to set a name template for saved records Here you can customize the language and theme of the application
Key and password management, encryption. The functionality in comparison with analogs is very wide Here you can define the parameters of the built-in audio player Here you can read information about the application
Conversation records are stored here, which can be sorted as you want.

Well, the main features seem to be covered. What about extras?

It is necessary to immediately make a reservation: before using complex additional methods that require a lot of time, it is first recommended to check all sources! They are located in this application along the path "Settings -> Recording -> Standard API". In some cases, changing the recording source works even without using special settings, and in this case, all subsequent actions become unnecessary.

How to change the recording source - photo instructions

If this did not help either ... then it’s time for additional methods!

The main difference between this application and its peers is the additional ability to record telephone conversations through the operating system kernel. The vast majority of such programs on the market record a call through the built-in tools of the Android system (API), therefore, if the manufacturer does not want something to be recorded from the device, it usually simply blocks the use of these tools. Luckily for the user, however, built-in APIs are not the only way to record a phone call.

If APIs are blocked, the program can bypass them and directly access the system kernel to execute its function. But in order for it to be able to do this, the owner must have superuser (root) rights on his device. Only then will the application be able to access the kernel in order to record through it. So, in order to use the additional features of Call Recorder to record calls on a device where APIs are blocked, you first need to get root access and grant superuser rights to the application.

You can get superuser rights using special programs for obtaining - root-access (different programs have been developed for different devices, so you need to select them based on the parameters of your phone or tablet) or according to the instructions in the branch of a specific device on the w3bsit3-dns.com forum thread. There is no common and uniform way to get root-rights for all devices. There are many nuances, and ultimately, for each model, obtaining root access is different, so it is impossible to write a general instruction on how to obtain superuser rights.

After root access to the device is obtained, you need to give extended rights to the Call Recorder application. Its creators recommend using the popular SuperSU application for this purpose: the superuser rights manager. If SuperSU or its equivalent is installed on the phone, Call Recorder itself will request access through it to obtain root rights.

However, this is not all. It should be noted right away that among the Call Recorder settings on the "Settings -> Recording" path, there is a "Device" item. The program is optimized in different ways for different devices (this applies specifically to additional features!), So it is recommended to immediately select from the list the one on which the application is running. If the required model is not in the list, you can select a model with the same processor (which processor is on a particular phone, you need to find out on the manufacturer's website or through special applications, for example, CPU-Z).

How to do this, you can look at the photo instructions:

When the device is selected, you can proceed to the next step. In the same section of the settings there is an item "Recording method", which includes both standard APIs and alternative methods, which are named in the application as CAF, ALSA and MSM. It is for the correct operation of these methods that root access is required, because they imply access directly to the kernel of the Android operating system.

It is impossible to determine which of these methods will work without knowing the configuration of a particular device. That is why the creators of the application recommend testing all of them (and not using automatic call recording during testing, but manual recording) and, based on the test results, decide which methods work better (and whether they work at all).

Selecting a sound recording method: through standard APIs or additional methods

Important! Chances are, none of the additional recorders on your device will work! This is due to the fact that sometimes manufacturers disable the ability to record a conversation at the hardware level, and in this case, no software method will help. The only way out in such a situation is to buy a new phone (or special wiretapping equipment).
