When restoring Windows to a working state, you often have to use a LiveCD (the so-called bootable CD or flash drive that allows you to download an antivirus or even Windows from the same disk or flash drive. That is, to work on a PC, you do not need to install anything on your hard drive, just boot from such a disk).
A LiveCD is often needed when Windows refuses to boot (for example, during a virus infection: a banner pops up on the entire desktop and does not allow it to work. You can reinstall Windows, or you can boot from the LiveCD and delete it). Here's how to burn such a LiveCD image to a USB flash drive and consider in this article.
How to burn a LiveCD image to a flash drive
In general, there are hundreds of bootable LiveCD images on the network: all kinds of antiviruses, Winodws, Linux, etc. And it would be nice to have at least 1-2 of these images on a USB flash drive (otherwise something…). In my example below, I will show how to write the following images:
- LiveCD from DRWEB - the most popular antivirus, will allow you to check your HDD even if the main Windows OS refuses to boot. You can download the ISO image on the official website;
- Active Boot- one of the best emergency LiveCD, allows you to recover lost files on the disk, reset the password in Windows, check the disk, make a backup copy. You can even use it on a PC where there is no Windows OS on the HDD.
1) Rufus
A very small utility that allows you to easily and quickly burn bootable USB disks and flash drives. By the way, it is very convenient to use it: there is nothing superfluous.
Recording settings:
- Insert a USB flash drive into the USB port and specify it;
- Partition scheme and system device type: MBR for computers with BIOS or UEFI (choose your own option, in most cases you can use it as in my example);
- Next, specify the bootable ISO image (I indicated the image with DrWeb), which needs to be written to a USB flash drive;
- Check the boxes next to the items: quick format (careful: it will delete all data on the flash drive); create a boot disk; create an extended label and device icon;
- And the last thing: click on the start button ...
The time it takes to burn an image depends on the size of the image being burned and the speed of the USB port. The image from DrWeb is not so big, so its recording lasts an average of 3-5 minutes.
If Rufus did not suit you for some reason, you can use another utility: WinSetupFromUSB (by the way, one of the best of its kind). It allows you to burn not only bootable LiveCDs to a USB flash drive, but also create multi-boot USB flash drives with different versions of Windows!
How to set BIOS to boot from LiveCD
In order not to repeat myself, I will give a couple of links that may come in handy:

In general, setting the BIOS to boot from a LiveCD is no different from the one that is done to install Windows. In fact, you need to do one thing: edit the BOOT section (in some cases, 2 sections *, see links above).
When you enter the BIOS in the BOOT section, change the boot queue as shown in photo # 1 (see a little lower in the article). The bottom line is that the boot queue starts with a USB drive, and only behind it is the HDD on which you have the OS installed.

Work examples
If the BIOS is configured correctly and the flash drive is written without errors, then after rebooting the computer (laptop) with the USB flash drive inserted into the USB port, the download should start from it. By the way, pay attention, by default, many loaders give 10-15 seconds. for you to agree to boot from a USB flash drive, otherwise they will boot your installed Windows OS by default ...

That's actually the whole creation of a bootable flash drive from a LiveCD - nothing complicated ... The main problems arise, as a rule, due to: a poor-quality image for burning (use only original bootable ISOs from developers); when the image is out of date (it cannot recognize new hardware and the download freezes); when the BIOS is configured incorrectly or the image is captured.

Having a flash drive with a LiveCD can come in handy when Windows refuses to work. Method 4: UltraISO
This program is a reliable tool for burning images to discs and creating bootable flash drives. It is one of the most popular for the task at hand. To use UltraISO, do the following:
How to burn a LiveCD to a flash drive? To do this, you can use various methods.
LiveCD on an external hard drive makes it possible to restore Windows and Linux, diagnose problems with them and even treat viruses, even if the system cannot be booted for some reason.
As a rule, this set of utilities is recorded on CDs or DVDs. However, it is much easier and more convenient to create a similar flash drive from LiveCD - more precisely, from LiveUSB.
At the same time, you can create such a media not only in the system for which it is created, but also in almost any other - the main thing is to choose the appropriate application.
Creating a Windows LiveCD
You can simplify the creation of a bootable Live CD / DVD / USB device using the appropriate applications.
Among them, the most popular and convenient to use are WinSetupFromUSB and UltraISO. Moreover, their full versions can be downloaded online for free.
Using WinSetupFromUSB
The WinSetupFromUSB application allows you to easily burn any disk or USB flash drive, including bootable and diagnostic ones.
They differ from regular Windows disks in that they use other bootloaders, such as GRUB4DOS, for example.
Although when recording with the help of appropriate programs, only the correctly selected distribution kit matters, and the process of saving data is carried out in exactly the same way.
Working with the program, despite the interface made in English, is quite simple:
- Download, install and run the program in the Windows operating system (from XP to 10);
- Select the appropriate drive from the list;
Advice: if there are several media, and they are of the same size, it is worth removing the extra ones so as not to accidentally write information to another place
- Check the item "Auto format it with FBinst";
- Select images (one or more, since the program allows you to record as many sets of utilities and installation programs as will fit on a USB flash drive - for example, in order to be able to restore Windows OS of different versions);
- Mark (using checkboxes) those types of images that you want to install.
After pressing the Go button, all systems will be installed on the USB flash drive.
The time it takes depends on the number of distributions and the power of the computer.
Working with UltraISO
Using the UltraISO application, you can create bootable USB flash drives of any type by following a few simple steps:
- Run the program;
- Open an image in it;
- Go to boot menu
- Open the item "Burn hard disk image";
- Specify the drive on which the LiveCD will be written.
Special LiveCD builds
Some popular LiveCDs have their own specific installation instructions, which can be found on the developer's website.
For example, the Kaspersky diagnostic disk is installed using the Kaspersky Rescue Disk Maker utility, which allows you to get a properly working media, while other applications can create non-working distributions of the same LiveCD.
Features of creating a LiveCD in Windows 10 (W10)
In the W10 operating system, creating a LiveCD is much easier.
This will allow you to restore various platforms, including the distribution of the OS itself, earlier versions of Windows, and even Ubuntu, without downloading them.
Moreover, one of the methods does not require the use of any applications and utilities, although it has certain limitations in use, and for the second, you only need a program downloaded from the Microsoft resource.
The easiest way to burn a LiveCD for W10 is to simply copy a suitable set of utilities from your hard drive to a flash drive.
To do this, you do not need to use any program, but simply unpack the ISO image to your hard drive and then transfer the data to the media (to simplify the task, you can use the "Copy folder" item).
True, a set of diagnostic utilities will be loaded only if the system has an improved UEFI-BIOS interface.
What is required from the user before copying:
- Format the flash drive in FAT32 format;
- Change the mode in the BIOS of the computer for which the diagnostic disk will be used - make the UEFI profile active, and not "compatibility mode".
Media Creation Tool
Using the proprietary Media Creation Tool, developed by Microsoft and suitable for creating a LiveCD with the latest versions of Windows (8, 8.1 and 10), is quite simple and convenient.
A flash drive is created during the update of the OS already installed on your computer. As a result, you receive a licensed copy of Windows on media.
The program begins with the launch of the distribution kit, after which a prompt appears on the screen to create a disk or update the system.
The next steps are choosing to create installation media and clicking the Next button.
After selecting a USB device, you should go to the list of available drives.
After choosing the installation option, the process of downloading the Windows distribution kit to the USB flash drive (any required version, from XP to 10) begins.
In this case, the information is downloaded first to the computer, and only then to the disk; The speed depends on the bandwidth of the Internet connection.
Creating Ubuntu distributions (Ubuntu)
You can create an Ubuntu distribution both from Windows and from Ubuntu itself or any other version of Linux.
The first option will help in cases where you are going to install several platforms on one PC, or create a LiveCD for someone else's computer. The second provides the creation of a disk for restoring its own system.
Bootable USB flash drive from Ubuntu in Windows
The initial step in installing Ubuntu on Windows is to download a disk image and the appropriate program to create a bootable USB flash drive (for example, Universal USB Installer).
You can get help in choosing distributions for this system, for example, on the official Russian website of the platform manufacturer. Here you will find the latest version of Ubuntu and several older versions of it, choosing the one that suits you best based on size, last release date or support.
- run Universal USB Installer;
- connect a USB drive with a volume of at least 2 GB to the computer;
- format the drive in FAT32 format (using Windows tools or using a program).
In the window that opens, select the name of the system to be installed on the disk (Step 1), then the location of the distribution kit (Step 2) and the address of the flash drive (Step 3).
After clicking on the Create button, you will have to wait for the installation of the LiveCD, which usually takes no more than half an hour.
It's even easier to use the universal program Unetbootin for Windows by doing the following:
- download the application and install it on a PC;
- open it on behalf of the system administrator;
- select a distribution kit from the list;
- specify the location where the system image is located;
- select a disc name;
- start the installation process.
Important!
In order for the software to install smoothly on your personal computer or laptop, you need to correctly record. It is recommended to do this through a special program.
In other words, if the image is simply copied to the installation media, then the program will not be installed - the software is not recognized as a system file. Due to the use of the BOOTMGR bootloader, installation is carried out on any BIOS version.

A live CD is a generic tool that contains certain files bundled together in a single shell. Files are various programs that make it possible to diagnose computer components, remove viruses, and even try out any operating system without installing it. Yes, and this is not all the possibilities.
Live CD is usually used in emergency situations when normal booting of the OS is not possible. That is why you should create such an image in advance.
For example, your computer was infected with a virus that caused a full-screen banner to appear. It interferes with work so much that it is very difficult to even get to the browser and download the healing utility. Alternatively, reinstall the OS. But you will lose some of your personal files. Therefore, in such a situation, use Live CD.
You can burn a Live CD to any media: CD, DVD or USB. We will consider only the last option.
Tip: use only original images. After all, there are many assemblies that contain unnecessary files, and sometimes even viruses. Also, choose only the most recent image, as your device may not recognize it, which will cause it to work incorrectly.
WinSetupFromUSB utility
This program is one of the most convenient and simple. It may even contain several Live CDs. It's just that when you download, you have to choose which of the images you need in this situation.
Tip: before starting the procedure, make sure that there is nothing important on your flash drive. After checking, format it. Also, use an 8 GB flash drive or higher. This capacity will be enough to record two images.
So, I have two images that I want to burn to a USB flash drive. To get started, download the program by clicking on the link: http://www.winsetupfromusb.com/downloads/. Connect the flash drive and run the utility. A window like this will open.
Specify the path to your flash drive and make the same settings as shown in the screenshot.
Tip: if you have two drives connected with the same capacity, then it is better to remove one of them. Then you exclude the option of recording the image on the wrong media.
When you check the box next to "Linux ISO ...", there will be an ellipsis button on the right. Click it. A window like this will open in front of you.
After a while, the image will be ready.
But how to add a second image? Very simple! Open the same program, specify the same path to the flash drive. Since one image is already recorded on it, put a tick only next to "Linux ISO ...", and add the second image.
Again, we agree with everything and start recording.
UltraISO Utility
This program can burn an ISO image to almost any media, including a USB flash drive. It is very easy to do this, but first download the utility, which is located here: http://ultraiso.ru.softonic.com/.
Connect the flash drive (format it in advance) and run the program. Open the image in this program using the "File" - "Open" menu.
Specify the flash drive as a drive. Leave the rest of the settings untouched. And, of course, click the "Record" button.

Rufus utility

After opening the program, specify the path to the flash drive and to the image. Set up everything else in the same way as in the screenshot.
Other Methods
If you need to burn a Live CD of a particular program, then on the developer's website you will find a special utility for this procedure. For example, you need Kaspersky Anti-Virus. Go to the official website, download its image and the corresponding program there. In this situation, it is best to use it, since universal utilities sometimes "crookedly" burn this kind of Live CD.
Working with it is very simple: you need to specify the path to the image and to the flash drive.
Doctor Web, Avast and so on have similar programs. Just carefully look at the official websites of the necessary programs.
How to apply the result
Insert the flash drive into your computer and reboot your device. If everything is done correctly, the download from the flash drive will begin.
In the next window, select the required image.
After that, your image will be loaded, in which you can fully work.
That, in fact, is all the work.
