MS Office 2010 has an autosave feature that should periodically save copies of the document while editing a file. Starting Outlook in safe mode and disable add-ons
Sometimes add-ins can conflict with Outlook. Start Outlook in safe mode (Outlook will start without loading add-ons) to see if this is the problem.

If Outlook starts in safe mode, the problem is most likely with one of the add-ins. Before restart Outlook needs to disable all add-ins.
Disabling add-ons
Manually write down the name of each selected add-in in the list Available add-ons.

In the left upper corner Outlook window, select File > Options > Add-ins.
Make sure at the bottom of the window Control Microsoft add-ons office in field Control item selected COM add-ins, and then click the button Go.
When the list of current COM add-ins, do one of the following as a precaution.
After noting the names of the selected add-ins, clear all checkboxes and click the button OK.
