How to make a link in Word? A hyperlink is a part of a document (some graphic object or text), clicking on it takes you to a web page or to a specific file located on the Internet or on your computer. A hyperlink in Word is most often done to follow such a link to some site, for the transition to which such a link was made.

To make the transition, press the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and left-click on the link, after that you will automatically be taken to the site or file you need, to a certain place in the document, a new document will be opened or an e-mail will be opened.

In different versions of Microsoft Word, these actions are performed in the same way, there are only differences in the interface of the versions of the program.

Create a hyperlink in a Word 2007 document

In the 2007 version of Word, this example will show you how to create a hyperlink in a Word document to a specific site.
To do this, you will need to open a Word document. In the open document window, select a word, expression, piece of text, symbol or graphic object. In this case, I have highlighted the word "DOWNLOAD".

After that, the "Insert Hyperlink" window opens.

Under the expression "Associate with:", you must click on the button "file, web page" (in our case). You can also link to a specific location in a document, or link to another document or email.

In the field "Address:" paste the copied link of the site you need. In the "Text:" field, the link address will be entered automatically.

If you need to enter some expression instead of a simple Internet address (for example, https: // site /), which will be displayed instead of a simple web address, then you can hide such a link with such an expression (anchor).

To do this, in the "Text:" field you will need to enter the required word or expression. In this example, I entered the word "DOWNLOAD".

Then click on the "OK" button. After that, the link in Word will be inserted in the desired place in the document.

There is another way to create a hyperlink. After opening a Word document, select the expression or piece of text you need, then right-click on the selected expression or piece of text. Further, in the context menu, click on the item "Hyperlink ...".

Create a hyperlink in a Word 2003 document

In the "Insert" tab, in the context menu, you will need to select the "Bookmark ..." item.

In the "Bookmark" window, click on the "Add" button. Here you can enter the name of the bookmark (must start with a letter and must not contain spaces), by default the name is entered automatically.

Now go to the text (in our case), which should be the hyperlink. Select this text (in this example, the word "click"), and in the context menu, click on the item "Hyperlink ...".

The hyperlink has been created. To go to a specific place in the document, right-click on the link, in the context menu, click on the "Open hyperlink" item. After that, it will move to a specific location in the Word document to which the link was created.

Create a hyperlink in a Word 2010 document

In Word 2010, we will create a hyperlink to a new file. To do this, in the open Word document window, select a text fragment, symbol or graphic object to which the hyperlink will be anchored. Right-click on the selected one (in this example, the word "document"), then in the context menu select the item "Hyperlink ...".

In the "Name of the new document" field, you will need to write its name. You can change the location of the new document. Then click on the "OK" button. The hyperlink has been created.

If the checkbox in the "now" item is activated, then a new Word document will open immediately. After finishing work with a new document, close it.

Open the first document, right-click on the hyperlink, in the context menu, click on the "Open hyperlink" item. This will open the second document you linked to.

Let's start with the simplest and get to the hardest.

Regular link and hyperlink

This option takes place, but there is a significant drawback if we are talking about the effectiveness of such a link. It is not clickable, that is, you cannot go to it with a simple click of the mouse. This option is rather difficult for visitors to perceive.

Another thing is a hyperlink, which on click redirects to another document on the Internet, both internal (within the same site) and external (another site). You can see an example of such a link below. Try clicking on the link.

The main page of my resource should open in a new tab. To implement this option, you must either use the means of your engine, or write the following line in the HTML code.

The link is created with a simple tag , inside which there is the address itself where the user needs to be redirected, as well as the anchor of the link (in the example above, the anchor is the phrase "click here"), which indicates the link text that explains what you will get when you go to this address.

If you have a simple website made in HTML, then in the page editor you should write just such a code, change my address to your own and indicate your anchor. It will look like this.

This is also very important, so it is advisable not to throw the visitor off the resource, but to leave him. Using this attribute, you will ensure that the visitor clicking on many links on one page will not leave the current one, but at the same time will open many other pages. This is important if you are promoting a website.

You can add the title attribute to the link, which is the heading tag and let search engines know where the link is heading. Also, this tag is displayed (if registered) when we hover over the link in the form of a tooltip.


It is advisable to add a title tag so that visitors can see this hint on hover and understand where they are going. This is done simply, inside the opening tag as in the example below.

When using an engine such as WordPress, adding a link to a site is very simple without any edits in html mode. The post editor has a special icon with a connection icon.

  1. First, select the phrase that you want to make a link;
  2. Click on the add link icon;
  3. We set the parameters of the link (the address of the page where the user needs to be transferred, as well as the title of the link, that is, the anchor, if necessary).

You don't have to enter the title of the link, since it will be the text that was highlighted in the first step. In the image I have shown adding links from existing pages of the site. You can do this, then by clicking on one of the entries from the list of URLs and the title will be entered automatically.

The URL can also be entered on an external site. If so, then enter the full (absolute) address of the page. To open the page in a new tab, there is no need to write the attribute by hand. The engine provides for such a possibility using one check-box (see the image above).

A little higher, I said about the absolute address. This means that the full address of the page to which you want to redirect, regardless of whether it is our resource or another, is entered inside the link.

There is also a relative address when it is not necessary to write the full address. You just need to register the path to some directory or page of the site, without specifying the domain name. Such links work only for a page within a single resource. You won't refer to an external project like that.

Link picture

Picture links are also widespread, although they should only be used for their intended purpose. If we are simple links to other pages within our site, then it is better not to make them images, since it is not always clear that you need to click on the image to get to some page.

It is advisable to do this when you want to advertise someone, for example, someone's video course. In this case, you give a regular hyperlink, followed by a link-picture. In this case, it will be more clear that the image leads to the course site, where it can be purchased.

If we take the html mode, then the principle of building the link structure is exactly the same, including all the attributes. The only difference is the anchor of the link, which looks like the code of the image itself. In the previous case, there was a simple text.

In practice, it will look like this.

As you can see, inside the opening and closing link tags there is an image code, which also has its own characteristics. In it you need to register the same title tag, specify the path to the image on the hosting or on another resource. It is also worth specifying the dimensions of the image (width - width, height - height). And you should definitely prescribe the alt attribute, which serves as a description for the image. If you write everything down, then the image optimization will be at the level.

This is how it looks in html mode. I split the code into 3 parts to make the link structure more understandable (the image is clickable).

The difficulty here is only to correctly write the code of the picture, which is used as an anchor.

Link-button using CSS styles

If you want to do something differently, then this option also takes place. Moreover, it allows you to change styles so that when you hover over the button, both the button itself and the color of the label that will be inside it will change. If you take a picture, then it is not always possible to implement it. With styles, anything is possible.

Also, a very good advantage is that we can place the button strictly in the center and it will be clickable only in the button area. If we take an image, then when placing it in the center, the entire area of ​​the content part in width in the area of ​​the image will be clickable. Sometimes such a defect leads to an accidental click on the image and, frankly, annoying.

For example, I created such a simple button that leads to the main page of the site. You can check its performance.

If you look at the source code of the button, you are all very simple. The only difference from a regular hyperlink is the presence of an id, which is appended inside the opening tag and to it, in turn, the design styles are registered in the style.css file.

Here is the structure of the button itself.

We see that immediately after opening the link tag the id = "button" is registered, which has its own design styles. The rest of the structure is identical with the hyperlink.

The principle is clear, so I give the styles that I added to this link button.

Another hyperlink attribute that specifies in which window this new document should be loaded, as "target". If you can enter any correct address in the href attribute, then target can have only four values: _self - the page must be loaded into the same window or frame.
