How to set night mode on android. Hidden setting in all Android smartphones allows you to enable a dark theme

The iOS 9.3 update introduces a new Night Shift feature designed to make using Apple devices more comfortable and safer. The technology limits the amount of blue light emitted by the screen in the evening, which reduces eye strain and improves the quality of sleep. For Android devices, there are several applications that allow you to achieve a similar result.

Mode in the style of Night Shift, to reduce eye fatigue, will appear in the new operating system Android N. Thematic resource Fan-android named six applications that you can use right now.

1. Night Shift: Blue Light Filter

The app is a simple filter to control the amount of blue light emitted by a smartphone screen. It will help to reduce the stimulating effect of blue and add brightness due to other shades of the spectrum that do not irritate the retina when viewing the screen in low light conditions.

The simple yet robust Night Shift app allows you to set the intensity of the filter separately for daytime and nighttime and can be turned on or off at will by the user with a single tap on the notification bar.

2. Twilight

Twilight is considered one of the best screen radiation filtering apps for Android devices. It allows the display to adapt to the time of day by softening the amount of blue light emitted by a phone or tablet according to a schedule or user preference. To achieve the desired effect, a soft red filter is applied, the intensity of which can be adjusted manually or automatically, depending on the user's location.

In addition to the basic settings, individual ones are possible: using filters of a different color, changing the color temperature with the imposition of several filters, saving settings in profiles used at certain times of the day (the free version of the application is designed for 2 profiles).

3. Night Shift (Blue Light)

Like its number 1 namesake, this app is very easy to use. The interface is divided into three modules - "filtering", "graphics" and "color temperature adjustment". The first switch turns on the filter. The scheduler (second slider) allows you to set the time for the filter to run. For example, you are going to watch a movie in the evening and you want the screen to be warmer at this time, no problem - just use the scheduler. And finally, the third slider allows you to change the color temperature filters between "less warm" and "warmer".

4. Eye Filter (Blue light filter)

Eye Filter is a very simple application and is purely designed to reduce eye strain by applying a translucent color filter to an image. If you want to reduce the overall brightness and intensity of blue radiation, the functionality of this program is quite enough. Eye Filter has four simple adjustments: on/off, setting the opacity from 0% -100%, color selection (black, gray, brown), and schedule.

5. Night Owl - Screen Dimmer

The Night Owl application allows you to set the screen brightness level lower than that provided in the screen settings menu. The user not only reduces eye strain, but if the gadget is equipped with an AMOLED display, it also gets the additional benefit of saving battery power.

The work of Night Owl is defined by four functional elements. The screen dimmer adjusts the brightness of the backlight, dimming it lower than it is possible by default. Automatic start and stop is necessary to activate or deactivate the program at a certain time. The Blue-Light filter is designed to reduce the amount of blue light emitted by the display and is aimed at combating insomnia. Finally, advanced filter settings allow you to adjust the red, green and blue components of the color spectrum.

6. Midnight (Night Mode)

Midnight is an effective eye protection for users. The application aims not only to minimize blue light emissions, but also to adjust the color temperature of the screen. So, if the user finds the screen too warm or too cold, they can adjust the color filters to their liking.

A special screen setting, in which the color temperature becomes warmer, we eliminate the blue glow - the picture looks a little less natural, but less strain on the eyes

Do you need night vision?

Over the past few decades, scientists have studied how blue light affects vision and the human body in general. The results of studies have confirmed its negative impact on humans. In particular, scientists from the American University of Toledo came to the conclusion that blue light leads to retinal degeneration. Pathology occurs due to its rapid aging.

As it turned out, under the influence of blue light, retinal, that is, a type of vitamin A, which is contained in the retina of the eye, changes. From a useful element, it is converted into a toxic substance, which leads to pathology. In addition, sometimes retinal turns into lipofuscin. It is a pigment with a characteristic yellow-brown color. It accumulates in cells that do not divide and damages them over time.

Changing the formula of retinal also leads to the accumulation of calcium in the cells, which leads to their deformation and, ultimately, to death. But this is not the only negative effect of blue light on vision. It also negatively affects the cornea of \u200b\u200bthe eye. In addition, it leads to a deterioration in sleep, as it blocks the production of the hormone melatonin, which can lead to a number of serious diseases.

Vision becomes especially sensitive to blue light in conditions of poor lighting, that is, at night. To reduce its negative impact on the health of users, smartphone manufacturers began to introduce such an option as “night mode”. True, it has such a name not in all smartphones. For example, in Meizu and Xiaomi devices, it is simply called “Eye Protection”, and in Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphones it is called “Blue Light Filter”.

How to activate night mode in bare Android phones

First of all, we note that “out of the box” the “Night mode” option is supported only by two versions of Android – Nougat and Oreo. To enable it, you need to do the following:

  • Go to phone settings.
  • Select Display.
  • Tap on Night Mode with your finger.
  • Move the switch to the "On" mode.

Here you can also set the schedule for automatic switching on and off of this mode, as well as enable automatic switching on / off at nightfall. In this case, your smartphone will determine by its location when you should activate the protective mode and deactivate it.

Smartphones with shells on top of Android

As we said above, many smartphone manufacturers add the "Night Mode" function in their proprietary shells. As a rule, the corresponding switch is available in the notification shade. In addition, you can search for this option in the display settings.

In addition to the brands already mentioned, blue light eye protection is available in smartphones from manufacturers such as Huawei, Asus, etc.

If your phone does not have eye protection mode

There are special applications that do an excellent job with the task. An example of this is the popular Bluelight Filter app. It has all the features of "Night mode" in Android.

In addition, there are many other similar programs: Night Screen, Night Mode: Blue Light Filter for Migraine, Protect My Eyes, etc.

Light filter in iPhone

The ability to turn on the light filter is available not only in smartphones running Android, but also iOS versions 9 and 10. To enable it, you need to follow these steps:

  • In the settings, select "General" and then "Universal access";
  • Select the category "Display adaptation" and find "Light filters" in it;
  • Check the box next to "Hue", set the two sliders below to the maximum.

In addition, iPhone users have the option of downloading the dedicated FlexBright blue filter app from the App Store.

Blue spectrum light is said to be harmful to the eyes, especially at night when you are more likely to use your device in the dark. It allegedly leads to poor sleep, which leads to poor health. Few people know, but you can turn on the night mode of your Android device.

On a computer, you can use an application called f.lux. iOS also has a Night Mode feature. These methods add a red tint to your screen to remove the blue spectrum, which is good for your eyes. The night mode of an Android device may seem inconvenient at first, but you will soon get used to such an image.

Unfortunately, Android devices do not have a built-in means to enable night mode, at least it is not so obvious. Android Nougat has a hidden version of Night Mode that can be opened with third-party apps. This method does not work on devices with Android versions below Nougat, so we will also look at some alternatives that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

How to enable night mode in Android Nougat

The night mode was hidden in the beta version of Android Nougat, and in the release it was simply removed. The menu still exists, but you won't be able to access it as easily as before.

First you need to enable System UI Tuner. To do this, drag the notification panel down twice and press and hold the gear icon. After a few seconds, you can release it and it will start spinning. An icon will be displayed next to the gear - it means UI Tuner is enabled.

Now that UI Tuner is enabled, you need to install Night Mode Enabler from Google Play.

After the application is installed, launch it and click on the “Enable Night Mode” button. A new menu should open with a pop-up message saying "Yay, you should now have a quick toggle for Night Mode available." (Hooray, now you can switch to night mode).

Before adding a quick switch, you can enable Android night mode to understand how it works. If you cannot turn on the night mode with the switch located on the right, then try clicking on the word "Enabled", which is located at the top left. The screen should turn yellow.

To use Night Mode more effectively, turn on the Turn on automatically switch. This feature will allow you to use your location and turn on the night mode of your Android device when it gets dark outside. You can also use the night mode to adjust the brightness, just slide the switch.

How to enable night mode on Android devices below Nougat

Users of devices with Android versions below Nougat also want to take advantage of the night mode. There are several methods that we will tell you about.

There are three popular apps available on Google Play: CF.lumen , f.lux and Twilight .

It is worth noting that CF.lumen and f.lux require root rights, Twilight does without them. But CF.lumen and f.lux have more different settings than Twilight.

There are many different studies that show that blue light filtering on your device will help you sleep. It would be nice if manufacturers of TVs and other devices would add a night mode feature to their devices.
