Wrong way to delete

The most common mistake is deleting a part of the program. This complicates the process of completely uninstalling all files.

Wrong ways:

  1. moving a shortcut and working folder to the trash;
  2. deleting the corresponding folder from Program Files.

Typical consequences of such actions:

Correct uninstallation methods

The goal is to remove not only the folder and shortcut, but also system objects. It is recommended to uninstall all programs using standard methods. At the same time, some elements may still remain, so it is more rational to also clean up system files using special programs.

Correct ways:

  2. through the control panel and the "Remove Programs" tab;
  3. using auxiliary services such as the Uninstall Tool.

Important! To complete the procedure, you must restart the computer when finished.

Check if there are no unnecessary objects left:

  1. press "Start";
  2. enter phrases related to the name of the antivirus in the search field;
  3. all that is related to the antivirus program - delete.

Remove or Uninstall programs

Another way is to use Uninstall. When you install an application, it is automatically installed and displayed on the Start menu.

Algorithm of actions:

After starting the uninstallation wizard, confirm your intention and complete the process. For complete completion, you need to clean the registry using special applications.

In the menu, select the necessary parameters (for professionals) or simply select:

The computer is now ready to install new antivirus software, or just for normal operation.

What to do if you can't delete

Having mastered the basic principles, you can protect your PC and extend its performance. In the future, it is recommended to use standard methods and work calmly.

In the letters that I receive from site visitors, there are quite often questions, the meaning of which boils down to the following:

- I want to change the antivirus, but it doesn't work.

- The antivirus installer requires you to remove the old antivirus, but it will not be removed.

- I removed the old antivirus, but I cannot install the new one. A message appears that the old antivirus has not been removed. What to do?

Several times, having answered letters with similar questions, I realized that this topic is of interest to many, and therefore decided to release a lesson for all site visitors.

The reason for this kind of problem lies in the fact that almost any antivirus program, when installed, "penetrates" very deeply into the operating system, and it is not always possible to find and remove these "roots" using conventional removal methods.

If you have ever tried to install two antiviruses at the same time, then you probably know how it ends. In 99% of cases, the computer is incredibly "buggy" and it is simply impossible to work.

And therefore, during installation, most antiviruses require you to remove all the "tails" of antivirus programs that were previously installed.

This is where the problem arises - the old antivirus cannot be completely removed, and the new one does not want to be installed. "Sees" the remnants of the previous one.

Hence the conclusion: in order for the problem to disappear, it is necessary to learn how to completely (along with the "tails") remove the antivirus. What are we going to do now.

Let's explore this question, moving from simple to complex!

1. Primarily, try to uninstall the antivirus in the usual way... How to do this is described in the lesson "How to install and uninstall programs", so I will not repeat myself.

In addition to the methods described in this lesson, you can try to run the installation file (setup.exe or install.exe), with which you installed your antivirus. Many of the antiviruses have built-in tools for removing themselves, so when you run the installation, you will most likely see next to the item "install" and paragraph "Uninstall the program".

This is the easiest way to delete, which, unfortunately, almost always leaves "tails".

In addition, on the websites of the creators of antiviruses (or on their forums) you can find and download utilities (programs) that are made specifically to remove your own antiviruses. The name of the site can be found from the antivirus program itself by selecting in the menu item "Reference" (Help) line "About the program" (About).

You should definitely look for them, but, unfortunately, such utilities do not exist for all antiviruses. Therefore, after you have done all this (or could not do it), and the effect did not occur, you need to find and remove all obvious (visible) remnants of the antivirus.

2. We are looking for obvious "tails".

To do this, first delete all folders with files in which this antivirus is located. After that, run a search: Start - Search, and on the left side of the window that appears, select the item "Files and folders":

When the search is complete, delete everything related to your antivirus from all folders, and especially from the Program Files folder.

Read more about searching for files.

3. Sometimes, in order to delete some of these files, you need to disable services that are created by antiviruses.

To find out if there are such services, click Start - Run and type from the keyboard services.msc

If you do not want to do a deeper cleaning, then after this step you can try to install a new antivirus, because this is often enough for a successful installation. However, not always.

4. An even more serious step towards removing all unnecessary "tails" left over from the old antivirus will be cleaning the registry.

To clean the registry, you can use special programs: NBG Clean Regisrty, RegCleaner, jv16 PowerTools or CCleaner, which can be downloaded.

After cleaning any of these programs, most often the problem disappears completely, but again, not always.

Therefore, if all of the above does not help, you can do the following ...

5. Manual registry cleaning.

Run the program to edit the registry: Start - Run- dial from the keyboard regedit :

When the program starts, select the menu item "Edit" - "Find":

In the window that appears, enter the name of your antivirus. Make sure that all checkboxes are checked and click the button Find Next:

When the program finds any registry entry similar to the entered name, it will stop waiting for your actions. Your job here is to make sure that this entry is indeed associated with your antivirus, and remove it if so. To do this, move the mouse cursor to this entry, press the right button and select the item "Delete":

To continue the search after that press the key F3, and when the program finds the next entry, delete it and press again F3... And so on until the search and removal of all unnecessary registry entries is completed. Pay particular attention to this registry branch:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> SOFTWARE> MICROSOFT> WINDOWS> CurrentVersion> Run

But be careful not to accidentally delete anything unrelated to what you are looking for.

(By the way, this cleaning method is also good for removing "tails" from some programs that have a limited period of use (usually 30 days), after which it is impossible to install them again).

After all the above steps, reboot and if you did everything correctly and accurately, feel free to start installing the desired program.

6. Well, if this already does not help, then there is always such a universal method as complete reinstallation of Windows.

After a complete reinstallation of Windows, any problem of this kind disappears 100%.

Unlike most other antiviruses, it is not so easy to remove the Avira package from your computer so that it will not leave a trace of it. This is mainly due to the specifics of the software itself, since it integrates a huge number of additional modules into the system. So, in the problem of how to remove the Avira antivirus from the computer completely, you won't have to rely on the system's own funds. However, you can use them, although it looks very impractical.

How to completely remove the Avira antivirus from a computer if it is not removed?

While the standard uninstallation seems complicated and time-consuming, it still needs to be considered. Such knowledge can be useful when removing other similar software products.

First, we use the standard section of programs and components, which can be found in the usual "Control Panel". It would seem that you just need to select the application and click the delete button. But not everything is so simple. The fact is that the free version additionally installs several more modules into the system: Launcher, Browser Safety and System SpeedUp (depending on the product modification, other components may also be present).

In such a situation, the question of how to completely remove Avira from your computer, at the first stage, comes down to uninstalling the antivirus itself. There shouldn't be any difficulties here.

The second step will be to remove the add-ons. System SpeedUp is removed first. In the uninstall window, be sure to check the boxes opposite the lines for deleting backups, program settings and license data. It is important! Otherwise, you will not be able to get rid of the package completely.

In the same way, we get rid of the Browser Safety add-on and all other modules (if any), and only then proceed to uninstall Launcher. It is the last one to be deleted! It is imperative that you use this deletion order. If the above components have not been removed before, when you try to uninstall the latter, you will receive a message stating that Launcher is busy with other Avira software.

Removing leftover files and directories

But this is only half the battle. Now the problem of how to completely remove Avira from the computer, as an intermediate solution, involves the removal of residual elements.

First, you need to boot the computer in Safe Mode, go to the Program Files (x86) directory for 32-bit systems or Program Files for 64-bit systems in the system partition and find the program directory there. It is usually called Avira.

It needs to be renamed (you can just add a few numbers to the main name). Then the system needs to be rebooted again, again in Safe Mode. Only then can the renamed directory be deleted.

Further, in the question of how to remove the Avira antivirus completely from your computer, at the next stage you need to enable the display of hidden directories and files through the view menu, then find the ProgramData folder and get rid of the antivirus directory. After uninstalling, you can reboot and start cleaning the registry.

How to completely remove Avira antivirus from a computer (Windows 7)?

Of course, at this stage, you can manually clean the registry by specifying the name of the remote antivirus in the search, and then getting rid of all the keys found. However, it is better to download a proprietary utility called Avira RegistryCleaner from the developer's official website.

In it, you need to click the Scan for keys button, at the end of the process in the confirmation window, click the OK button, check the box next to the Select all line and click the Delete button.

If we talk about manual search, the question of how to completely remove Avira from the computer in terms of getting rid of the test key is to go to the Classes folder in the registry through the HKLM branch and the SOFTWARE section, in which you need to find the entry shown in the image above, and delete it, followed by a system restart.

Using uninstallers

However, as practice shows, a much simpler solution to the problem of how to completely remove Avira from a computer will be the use of special programs. Of these, two of the most powerful can be distinguished: iObit Uninstaller and Revo Uninstaller.

Let's take a look at the second utility. After starting the program, select the antivirus icon and press the delete button, after which the standard uninstallation will follow. Then we return to the application window and select an advanced scan for the presence of residual components. All found objects must be deleted (they must be selected and the corresponding clear button must be pressed).

Upon completion of the procedure, the system should be completely rebooted, after which it is desirable to "clean up" it, for example, using the CCleaner package or any other optimizer. As you can see, the problem of how to remove the Avira antivirus from your computer (Windows 7) completely is quite difficult to solve, so you have to show patience and perseverance.

Antivirus programs, unlike conventional ones, cannot be removed just like that. They are firmly rooted in the system so that no virus can resist their power. Otherwise, what kind of protection is it?

To completely remove the antivirus, you need to use special uninstaller programs or perform a number of special manual operations. Otherwise, difficulties with installing new security software cannot be avoided.

When programs are demolished, traces of their presence are always left in the operating system by standard tools: files, registry entries, changed settings, etc. The uninstaller utilities completely clean the remnants of a \ v products from the system, thereby preventing conflicts when installing other security software.

Avast

To properly, completely without tails and forgotten files, uninstall Avast, download the Avast Clear utility and do the following:

Kaspersky Anti-Virus

Anti-virus products from Kaspersky Lab are removed using a special utility called KAVRemover.

Important: when uninstalling antivirus using KAVRemover all license information will be cleared. If you just need to reinstall protection, make sure to save the license key for the next activation.

The KAVRemover utility automatically detects which product from Kaspersky Lab is installed on the PC. If there are several products, you need to remove them one by one. After uninstalling each, a computer restart is required.

AVG

The developers of AVG in the latest versions have strengthened its self-defense so much that now, before launching the uninstall tool for the products of this company, you need to do a lot of manual work - turn off all the protective settings of the antivirus.

  • In the "Computer" section, disable file protection and behavior analysis.
  • In Web & Email, turn off Web Protection and Mail Protection.
  • In the Malicious Attacks section, disable the Enhanced Firewall and Ransomware Protection sections. Click Open and move the marker to Off.

  • "Privacy" - turn off webcam protection.
  • "Payments" - remove protection from fake sites. With the settings disabled, all tiles will be highlighted in red.
  • Open "Menu" / "Settings" and uncheck all the checkboxes in the sections "General" and "Troubleshooting". Also check to see if the sliders are set to Off in the Components and Update sections.

In addition to AVG Remover, you can use a versatile utility. After installing it on your computer, the Powerful Removal button will appear in the Programs and Features window. By clicking this button, you will not only completely uninstall the program, but also clean the system of residual files.

Before uninstalling programs, IObit Uninstaller creates a checkpoint to restore the system in case something goes wrong. So that you can roll everything back and try again.

The process takes several minutes. After it finishes, restart your computer.

McAfee

McAfee antivirus is a frequent visitor on computers of inexperienced users. This is not a bad product in itself, but it is often installed without the user's permission along with various free programs. Even a stationary antivirus is not a hindrance to him, and this sometimes causes a conflict between them and a lot of problems. The only good news is that in most cases, uninstalling McAfee is straightforward.

You can uninstall McAfee either through Control Panel / Uninstall Programs or using special utilities. It will be a utility for uninstalling McAfee products - McAfee Consumer Product Removal (MCPR) or IObit Uninstaller, there is no fundamental difference.

Let's look at how to uninstall McAfee using MCPR as an example.

360 Total Security

360 Total Security is a pretty good virus protection tool. But lately, it has often been having problems with it on the "not quite licensed" operating systems Windows 7 and 8 during the download and installation of updates. It does not have its own uninstallation utility like Avast or Kaspersky. The procedure for uninstalling it is standard: first - the standard Windows tools, and then - cleaning the remnants using special utilities.

ESET

There is a utility for uninstalling ESET products. The developer recommends using it in case of problems with standard deletion. It is suitable for all editions of Windows, but you need to download the version for the bitness of the system that you have installed.

Unfortunately, this method does not always work. Some ESET products cannot be uninstalled using the utility. If this is your case, you will see a window informing you that the program is not supported. Then you just have to remove the antivirus manually.

How to do it:

Avira

To remove Avira, there is also a special software that is capable of cleaning all remnants from the registry after a standard removal.

Dr.Web

Sometimes difficulties arise when trying to uninstall Dr.Web using standard Windows tools. For example, in the root directory of the program there is no built-in uninstaller - the Uninstall file. Then the CCleaner utility will help you.

With CCleaner, you can remove any software, including antivirus products.

Comprehensive utility AV Uninstall Tools Pack
