How to remove an app from iPhone. Download unused, or how to set up automatic deletion of unnecessary applications on iPhone and iPad

I am often asked. Nikita, how do you manage to use a 64 gigabyte iPhone?

Indeed, I used to wear a 256-gigabyte device and did not know any problems. 180 gigabytes were occupied.

But I'm fine. Now here is 30 GB of free space. Didn't dig anywhere and didn't delete anything!

What is this setting, where to turn it on?

1. Go to "Settings"-> "iTunes Store and App Store".

2. Scroll down, look for an item "Download unused".

3. Turn on this setting.

That's all. Free up from 1 to 50 gigabytes of space - everyone will have a different result.

What is it anyway? Dangerously?

"Download Unused" is a setting that de facto erases unused apps from the iPhone. But he does it smartly.

The fact is that iOS has been collecting data for several years, which programs you personally use often, and which ones you haven’t opened for a long time. The latter will be removed.

This is a lifesaver for those who have many applications installed, scattered across folders or desktop pages. No need to look for them, to think about each - it is necessary or not. Just turn on the setting, and the system will slowly do everything for you.

After activation, the unloading works constantly, removing new, but forgotten (read - unnecessary) programs from the internal memory. It's like a janitor who cleans up after you the rubbish uploaded to the App Store.

But what about the data in these applications? Will everything be deleted?

No. The coolest feature of this setup is that local app data is not deleted. For example, logins in messengers or saves in games.

Personal data is sent to iCloud and stored securely there. When you later download this application, all the information that is relevant at the time of the automatic unloading of the program will return with it.

I tested it on programs of various kinds and from various developers. It has never happened before that after re-downloading the data did not return. Once, however, I had to enter the password again - Viber.

So turn this setting on safely and don't sweat it. Now so little software is actually needed that it would be a pity to give the expensive place of your iPhone to the trash.

If you actively use your iPad, then a large number of unnecessary applications and games have probably accumulated on it. Usually this does not create problems, but if the device's memory space is over, then you will have to delete the old ones to install new applications.

Now we will look at three ways at once how you can delete an application on the iPad and thereby free up space in the device’s memory. We will also tell you why applications may not be deleted and how to fix it.

The iOS operating system allows you to remove installed applications directly from your desktop. This method of removal is the most convenient and fastest, so in most cases it is used.

In order to delete an application, find its icon on the desktop, click on it and hold your finger on the screen until a button in the form of a cross appears next to the application icons.

After that, click on this cross and confirm the removal of the application.

As a result, the application you selected will be removed from the iPad. In order to remove the crosses next to the application icons, simply press the "Home" button.

It should be noted that in some cases this method of removing applications from the iPad may not work. Sometimes when you click on the application icon, the delete button does not appear. If you encounter such a problem, then try one of the methods described below.

Uninstall apps using settings

Also in iOS it is possible to remove applications through the iPad Settings. To do this, open the Settings app and go to the iPad Storage section.

Note that in some cases this settings section may be called “Storage and iCloud usage”), and in older versions of iOS (before iOS 9) you need to go to the “Statistics” section.

In the iPad Storage section, you need to wait a bit for the list of installed apps to load. Once the apps have appeared, find the one you want to delete and click on it.

As a result, you will see a window with information about the selected application. This will indicate the size of the application, as well as the amount of documents and data that are related to this application. To uninstall this application, click on the "Uninstall a program" button.

Also here will be available the function "Download the program". In fact, “Download the program” is the same as deleting the application, but with the preservation of the data that relates to this application. Using the "Download program" function, you can reinstall the application without losing user data.

Deleting Apps via iTunes

As a last resort, applications on the iPad can be deleted through the iTunes program. To do this, you need to connect your iPad to your computer, launch iTunes and click on the device icon, which should appear in the upper left corner of the window.

This will take you to the iPad settings in iTunes. To remove applications here you need to go to the "Programs" section, the link to which is located on the left side of the window.

As a result, a window with the desktops of your iPad should appear. Here, with a double click, you need to open one of the desktops.

Then hover over the application and click on the delete button.

After that, the icon of the selected application will disappear from the desktop. Now it remains only to confirm the action using the "Done" button at the bottom of the iTunes window and the application will be removed from your iPad.

Applications are not deleted

If none of the described methods worked, then you may have enabled the restriction on deleting applications. In order to disable this restriction, open the iPad settings and go to the "General - Restrictions" section.

There will be a large list of different restrictions. Find the restriction on uninstalling programs and disable it. After that, you can try to uninstall the application again.

Surely every owner of an iPhone or iPad knows the problem when unused applications take up invaluable space on the phone. Luckily, it’s practically “forgettable” about it – starting with Apple’s mobile operating system, a feature has appeared that will automatically remove unused programs.

What's the difference between delete and unload?

To begin with, we note that deletion and unloading are slightly different processes. When uninstalling a program all data associated with it is deleted, while when uploading, application-related information, settings, and documents stored on the device. The downloaded application can be easily restored if it is available in the App Store. The upload option is available in iOS 11 and later.

Data associated with downloaded apps is also stored in backups that users automatically or manually save to iCloud or iTunes. Restoring your device from a backup will also restore your settings and data. In some cases, when restoring from an iOS backup, it may require you to enter an Apple ID that has not been used for a long time if the user has switched from an earlier device model to the current one. This may mean that the backup includes offloaded apps tied to the old ID.

Delete or unload - advantages and disadvantages

Unloading. Uploading deletes the original application file, but retains all documents and data associated with it. Also, the program icon remains on the home screen, so restoring it is not difficult. Compared to deletion, the upload is not as efficient in terms of freeing up space, but the data associated with the uploaded application is saved on the device.

How to understand that the application has been downloaded

Next to the name of the application that was unloaded automatically, an icon with the image of "clouds and arrows" will appear. If you see such a sign, know that the application has been unloaded and its data is still stored on the device.

How to Manually Download Unwanted Apps on iOS

As mentioned above, the upload process is different from the delete process. To uninstall an app from your iPhone or iPad, long-press its icon on the home screen until it vibrates, then tap the "x" in the top left corner of the icon.

To download the application, follow the instructions below:

1. Open "Settings" on the device.

2. Click "Basic".

3. Select from the list "iPhone Storage".

4. Click on the application you want to download.

Prompt: For the convenience of users, the applications in the list are organized in order of decreasing size.

5. Click "Download Program".

6. Confirm the action by selecting "Download Program" in the popup menu.

Prompt: If the application is marked as "Unused", you can safely delete it without worrying about losing the data since it was never created.

How to reinstall downloaded apps

Icons of unloaded applications are saved on the home screen. Reinstalling them returns all data associated with the application. If the app is not in the App Store, you won't be able to install it again.

2. Swipe down anywhere on the display to access the search function.

3. Enter the first letters of the app's name, and then select it from the search results. iOS will automatically reload the selected app from the App Store, and then the app will automatically sync with the saved data.

Method 3: Storage Settings

You can restore an unloaded application through the storage settings.

1. Open the section "Settings" on the device.

2. Click "Basic".

3. Select from the list "iPhone Storage".

4. Click on the downloaded app you want to reinstall.

5. Click "Reinstall the program".

The application will be reloaded. If it is no longer available in the App Store, you will not be able to download the app again.

Finally, you can reinstall the application directly through the App Store.

1. Open the App Store on your device.

2. Find the app you want.

3. Tap on the app and then tap on the cloud icon on the next screen.

Prompt: Just ask Siri to download the app. If you ask the assistant to open the program, an error will be displayed on the screen.

Moreover, the application icon will remain on the main screen of the iPhone. The downloaded application will be marked with a special icon, the same one that can be seen in the App Store on the pages of applications previously installed on the iPhone.

With iOS 11, Apple has finally come up with a solution: among several new mechanisms for automatically managing disk space, there is a feature called "Download Unused Software" that allows you to forget about the lack of disk space forever.

How to enable the "Download Unused Software" feature

iOS 11 has a new "iPhone Storage" settings screen. There you will find recommendations for freeing up disk space from moving your library to iCloud to deleting attachments in old messages.

Step 2: Select "iPhone/iPad Storage".

Step 3: Find the "Download unused" section and click "On".

Apps will be removed based on how often they are used. This only affects apps you haven't used in a while, so don't worry, your everyday apps will stay safe and sound.

After deleting an application, its icon on the home screen remains. However, it dims and a download icon appears next to the app name. Clicking on it will start downloading the program from the App Store.

How to download unused apps manually
