How to create a disk image: step-by-step instructions and useful recommendations. How to create an ISO file or CD image - eight free programs How to create a disk image

Read about how to create and work with disk images, as well as what programs you use in our article today.

Disk image. Areas of application

A disk image is a file containing a complete copy of the content and structure of the data located on the drive.

In this case, a disk should be understood as any hard disk (HDD), floppy disk (FDD) or optical disk (CD/DVD) or Flash drive.

Advice! The main advantage of a virtual image is the fact that the disk image contains absolutely all the information to duplicate the structure, content and location of data on the storage medium, repeating its set of sectors and ignoring the file system.

Virtual disks are used for the following purposes:

  1. Reserve copy.
Unlike conventional backup programs, which copy only those files to which you have access, if you create an image, in addition to the data itself, the bootloader and files that may have been blocked by the OS will also be copied.
  2. Software distribution. For distribution (including via the Internet) of large operating systems (OS) and software (for example, BSD, Linux OS distributions).
  3. Creating virtual hard disks in virtual machines. Before you start working with a virtual machine, you need to create a virtual hard disk on which the operating system will subsequently be installed.
  4. Replication of similar systems.
If it is necessary to install the operating system and software on computers that have the same hardware configuration.
A more rational step would be to install and configure the OS and software on one computer, after which an image is created along with all system settings and installed on other computers.

The .ISO format is the most popular disk image format, but has the disadvantage of lacking support for multi-session data.

Other popular formats are .DMG and .IMG formats, as well as proprietary .MDS/.MDF (Alcohol, ), NRG (Nero Burning ROM), .VCD (VirtualCD) and others.

Welcome to my blog!
After reading this article, you will learn how to create an image of an ISO file or CD using different programs. In total, I decided to give an example of working with eight free programs that can create an ISO archive, both a regular file or directory, and a CD, so that you can choose the most optimal ones for yourself and work with them.

An ISO image is an image of a file or program that supports the ISO 9660 standard system and has a *.iso extension. This is a kind of archive, the contents of which can be viewed with any archiver or file manager that supports this function, for example Total Commander.

How can I use an ISO disk image? There are several applications for using such images.
For example, you can create an ISO archive of your favorite game and mount it onto a virtual disk, and then use it rather than a real CD-ROM drive.
Such an archive can be posted online for downloading, and the person who downloads it can burn it onto a CD.
An ISO archive can also be used to install operating systems on a virtual machine, for example VirtualBox, which is very convenient when working with it.
It is also convenient to store such archives on CDs if you burn several distributions onto one disk and, if necessary, take only the one you need.

There are many uses for ISO files and every computer user will find a use for them.
Check out the programs below and choose the ones you like. The list of programs is large; for ease of navigation, use the menu. All programs work perfectly in Windows 7 64bit, but if there are any problems with the installation, then run them in compatibility mode with Windows XP.

Cyberlink Power2Go program.

The program of Taiwanese developers Cyberlink Power2Go is designed for recording and copying discs of various formats. This program is distributed free of charge, which makes it very popular among computer users.

Using Cyberlink Power2Go, you can quickly create an ISO disk image.
By default, when you start the program, a window appears asking you to select various actions when working with the program, which is very convenient, since you can immediately launch the desired mode in the program. If desired, this window can be disabled and operated using the application menu.

To save a disk image in this program, select “Disk Utilities” in the left menu window, and “Save disk image” in the right window.
If you have disabled this window, you can create a disk archive using commands in the main program window.

To do this, open the menu in the top line “Burn to disk” and select “Save disk image”.

In the next window, you will need to select the CD-ROM drive, if you have several of them, change the reading speed if you need it, and by clicking on the “Browse” button, select the path where you want to save the disk image.

When choosing a location to save the image, in the “File name” line, you will need to indicate its file, any one, you can come up with your own and in the “File type” section, indicate the extension in which you want to save the archive. The extension “*.p2i” is the format of the program itself, we need to select the extension “*.iso”.
Then click the “Save” button to begin saving the disk image.

A window will appear showing the progress of this operation, after the successful completion of which you will see another window where it will be reported that the operation was completed successfully.

Every computer user sooner or later begins to wonder: “How to create a disk image?” This is quite simple to do, moreover, the process does not take much time. But for this, it is recommended to read this article, as it provides step-by-step instructions that will help you understand the issue in more detail.

General provisions

There are several ways you can create a disk image yourself. In any case, we will have to work with special software, which significantly speeds up the process and makes it much easier. It is worth saying that the image, which may have the ISO extension, is a regular file stored on your hard drive. The only difference is that it has a size significantly smaller than the original one, and is also launched using special programs. You've probably noticed that most often the image is created for games and service files that take up a lot of space. The ISO is also opened by different programs, and in this article we will look at which ones. By the way, the extension does not have to be exactly like this, but it is used most often. We cannot help but draw your attention to the fact that the integrity of the files is of great importance; it is advisable to check them with an antivirus before starting work. After this, we proceed to the practical part.

What's good about the image?

First, let's look at a simple example. For example, you have a game disc, you need to use an optical drive to run it. If one is missing or faulty, then this already indicates that the image is an excellent solution for you. The same applies to damaged disks. Old computers and laptops often have a faulty laser, so writing or reading a disc is quite problematic. In addition, if you have a good Internet connection, you can download images from the Internet, you don’t even need to buy anything, you just need to find what you need. Another example is installing an operating system from a flash drive or disk, which is extremely convenient. The image will unpack quickly and without errors. As noted above, if the file weighs 11 gigabytes, and you have a 4.5 GB disk, then the only way to write the document to existing media is to make an image of it. This way you can achieve the volume you need.

Working with Daemon Tools

One of the most popular and simple programs for creating images. It is completely free and constantly updated, supports most modern extensions, which is why it is in great demand. First, we need the installed program and a disk inserted into the drive; it is its image that we will learn to create. Most often, the Daemon Tools icon appears in the tray (lower right corner on the desktop). Right-click and see a pop-up menu, where you should select “Create a disk image.” A menu will open in front of you. Here we can find the disk drive, the place where the image will be saved. You will also need to select an extension. ISO or IMG is recommended, but if you are interested in a specific format, then choose that one. The name of the image is also indicated here. After that, select “Save”. Click "Start" and wait for the process to complete. Upon completion, close the window and go to the folder where we saved the file.

Creating a hard disk image: introduction

It’s one thing to simply learn how to write to a flash drive or disk, and quite another to be able to create backup copies. For this we will use free software, a program called Acronis. Although it is worth noting that this is far from the only option that allows you to work with a hard drive. If you are using the Windows 7.8 operating system, then there are built-in tools that allow you to create an image of your hard drive. If this is a laptop, then there is also a standard utility called Recovery. It is worth saying a few words directly about Acronis, which was designed specifically to backup hard drives, boot them or restore them. It should be noted that the utility works when other programs are powerless, for example, even in cases when the operating system does not load. Well, now let's move on to the practical part of the question.

How to create a hard disk image using Acronis Images?

First of all, go to the program menu. Here you will see the line “Backup and Restore”, which is what we need. Click and go to another section, where you need to select the “Backup disks and partitions” item. Pay special attention to disk management. You will be able to watch as many as 4 sections. Each of them is responsible for something. One of them, usually the biggest one, is where you have your operating system installed. The section called System contains recovery information. Recovery is the place where the factory settings of a computer or laptop are stored, and the untitled section is of a system nature. So, select disk 1, also known as My Passport, our backup copy will be located here. The program will prompt you to make a copy of all partitions of your computer or laptop. It’s worth noting right away that you don’t need to change anything, we create a full backup of all partitions. It is advisable to perform the setup first; to do this, go to disk mode, check the box next to the hard drive and select the location where to save the image.

We continue to work with Acronis

After we have done all of the above, we move on to the next stage, where we need to get down to business, and since creating a disk image is not very difficult, it will take no more than 10 minutes. It is best to use a flash drive or portable hard drive. This is where you should create and save a backup copy. Although this may be a partition of the hard drive, it is not the partition where the operating system is installed. Then you can click “Archive”, although before doing this it is better to configure the backup settings. Go to “Advanced” and check the box next to “Archive in sector-by-sector mode.” We also select “Check the backup after it is created.” Exit this menu and start archiving. When finished, go to the folder and see if our file is saved.

What to pay attention to

It should be noted that you must create bootable media. Since you already know how to create a disk image, let's move straight to the next point. This is necessary in case any emergency arises. For example, the computer does not turn on due to errors. For this we use the same Acronis. In the main menu, select “Create bootable media.” Next, follow the instructions, and then insert a flash drive or disk into the port. The connected device will appear in the window. In the menu, check the boxes next to all the lines that you see. Click “Next” and select the device, after which we begin creation. A window with the process will appear, when completed you will see a dialog box confirming the successful creation of bootable media. If you need to restore the system, you can do this either directly from a running system or through the BIOS. In the main menu, select “Restore” and follow the prompts.

Conclusion

I would like to say that creating a regular image and a hard disk image are somewhat similar. In principle, there is nothing complicated here, but there is one “but”: you need to use only those programs that you understand, or have detailed instructions at hand. If you do something wrong, then there is a chance that you will have to take the hard drive to a service center, where they will charge a considerable amount to restore its operation. After reading this, you should have a complete understanding of how to create a disk image: both hard and regular. The main thing is to follow the instructions and not be nervous if you fail to do something on the first try.

Hello dear readers of the computer help blog. Today I will share with you useful information on creating a disk image or how to create an ISO disk image, I will also tell and show you different ways to make images using special programs.

Last time we got acquainted with the Qiwi electronic payment system and went through the procedure.

The disk image can have different extensions, but in most cases the ISO format is used. An ISO disk image is the same copy of an optical disk in the ISO 9660 file system. In other words, a disk image is a regular file that can be stored on your computer like any other.

Making an image

For example, you have a disc with some kind of game, music, video or program. To launch it and work with it, you need it to be inserted into your optical drive. You can insert it and use it, but the more often you use the discs, the faster their surface deteriorates, gets scratched and becomes unusable.

The same story is with optical CD/DVD/BD-ROM drives. In order to read any disk and information on it, the drive device has a small laser, with the help of which the reading process occurs. The laser wears out over time, begins to read discs every once in a while, or stops playing them altogether.

This story happened on my old Fujitsu Siemens laptop. About two years after I got it, it started reading discs every once in a while, and then stopped working altogether. Recently I wanted to replace it, but computer stores don’t have them in stock, you just need to order from abroad. But I don’t want to buy used ones. So I live with a non-working CD/DVD-ROM.

In order to burn an identical disc or create a disc image, there are currently many different programs. In this issue we will look at the following programs for creating disk images: CDBurner, UltraISO, Deamon Tools, Ashampoo and Nero 7.

Creating a CDBurnerXP disk image

CDBurnerXP is a program for burning CD/DVD/BD discs. It is free and anyone can use it. CDBurnerXP has many languages and can both create and burn ISO images to discs. Works on most Windows operating systems.

After downloading and installing the CDBurnerXP program on your computer. You run this utility, everything is in Russian, you should figure it out.

Go to CDBurnerXP and select Copy Disc.

The Copy Disc window appears, go to the Scan Options tab, select the source, and set the number of attempts to read the disc. You can check the boxes next to Ignore unreadable data and Disable hardware error correction, but I would not advise you to do this.

After that, go to the receiver device, select Hard Drive and opposite the word File, click the button with three dots, indicate the location, the name of our ISO disk image and click on the Save button.

After you have selected and specified everything, click Copy disk. This process may take a long time, depending on the amount of information in your data.

Then the Copying Progress tab opens in front of us, where we can see how much time has already passed, how much is left and the status of creating the disk image as a percentage.

If everything goes well, the ISO image extraction completed window should appear in two minutes; this time may vary for you. Click OK.

In this way, you can make an ISO disk image from any disk with information, of course, if it is not copy protected and does not have different protection systems.

If you have lost the disk you need or don’t have it at hand, but you urgently need it, if you have made an image of it in advance, you can burn it to disk. To do this, go back to the CDBurnerXP program and select Burn ISO image to disk.

How to create a disk image using UltraISO

The UltraISO program in its name implies working with files with the extension ISO and similar ones. It is paid, you can purchase a license for $30 or use a trial period.

This utility has a fairly simple interface in Russian. We go to UltraISO and at the top it immediately says Unregistered version if you clicked Trial period during installation.

Go to the Tools tab and select Create CD image, you can press the F8 button or select the disk drive icon.

The Create CD/DVD image window opens. We also select the source drive and check the boxes if necessary in the CD reading settings. Save as: select the location where the image file will be saved, by default this is the My ISO Files folder in your account documents.

If you have little space on the disk where the operating system is installed, or you want to specify a different location and storage of image files, you can change the destination folder.

After this, we indicate the desired output format, it is advisable to select Standard ISO (*.ISO), if you work with other programs, you can select another desired format. Once everything has been selected, click the Make button.

Upon completion, a Hint will appear - The creation of the CD image has been successfully completed and you are prompted to open this project, you can click Yes or No, it makes no difference.

This is how a disk image is created using the UltraISO program.

Creating a Deamon Tools Disk Image

Deamon Tools is a common program with which you can create ISO images, mount virtual drives on your computer, burn discs and much more. Personally, I have been using it for more than 5 years.

After you have downloaded the program, launch it and check all the boxes in the settings, you can also select a free license. Next, you will be asked to install various add-ons from Yandex: Yandex bar, search from Yandex, make it the home page, and so on. I don't need all these extras, so I removed all the unnecessary checkboxes.

If you are working on the Windows 7 operating system, then you will be prompted to install the Deamon Tools gadget on your desktop, I installed it, you can accept or refuse it.

We go into the Deamon Tools Lite program, Free License will be written at the top. Find, select and click on the disk with the floppy disk; when you hover over it, it will say Burn disk image.

The Create Image window appears in front of us. Here you can select a drive, read speed from 12.0x to 48.0x, and specify the location of the output image file.

By default, the program saves the image file in its own folder called DAEMON Tools Images with the extension MDX files (*.mdx). If you only use the DAEMON Tools program, you can leave this format. But if you want to use other programs, I recommend changing the File Type to Standard ISO images (*.iso).

There are also additional settings; you can check or uncheck the boxes:

  • Compress image data
  • Delete image on error
  • Add to image catalog
  • Protect our image with a password

Once everything has been selected and configured, press the Start button.

Reading and writing an image of such a disk will take longer than usual. In the meantime, I recommend you get acquainted with the information.

Upon completion, there should be 100% of the general and current state, and after the Track Reading event, the inscription “Image creation completed” should appear.

Click close. At this point, the process of creating an ISO disk image can be considered complete.

Creating an ISO Disc Image of Nero 7

Everyone has probably used the Nero program or at least heard about it. Using it, you can burn discs of different formats, capture video, create your own presentations, videos and a bunch of other possibilities.

Today Nero 2014 already exists; you can download it for a trial period from the official website or buy it for 2899 rubles.

If you don't want to pay money, you can download Nero 7 via torrent.

I have the seventh version installed, I’m used to it and consider it reliable, so I will give examples using it.

After you have downloaded and installed the Nero program, go to Nero StartSmart, go to the Save tab and select Copy CD, if you have a DVD disc, then select Copy DVD.

The Nero Express window opens. Select our source drive, put Image Recorder in the destination drive column and click the Copy button.

We are asked to select a location, name the file and save the image file in the format (*.nrg), click Save. This format is accepted by most programs that work with images, including Daemon Tools.

The Burning Process window appears, in which the image for recording is created; you need to wait a little.

In the end, we should get this result. Image of Nero 7.nrg.

This is how you can create disk images using Nero 7.
