In most cases, when we finish working with text documents in Word, we need to save them to our computer. This can be done in several ways.

Saving a document for the first time

Each user must know how to save a document in Word. This is fairly easy to do if you are saving a document for the first time. To do this, just click once with the left mouse button "Save" on the quick access toolbar (at the top of the document). It looks like a small blue floppy disk. You can also use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + S (alternatively).

Whatever method you use, a dialog box will appear in front of you. In it you can give a name to the file, determine its format and save location. The Word program provides its users with the ability to set the default location for saving new documents. To do this, you need to configure the settings for saving documents in the same dialog box.

Resaving a document

If you are working in an already saved document, making some changes to it and want to save them, then you can use the button on the Quick Access Toolbar again. It is especially useful to do this periodically if you know that your computer has a habit of freezing.

An existing document can also be saved as a new one. To do this, in the tab
"File" select "Save As...". The dialog box will again prompt you to select a name, format, and save location. Quite often, users resort to such a function in a situation where they need to save both versions of a document (the original and the revised one).

We looked at how to create a document in Microsoft Word.

If you have Word 2010, then you will have the "File" button, the far left in the main menu.

There are three main directions in the dialog box. The first is where you want to save your document, the second is how you want to name it, the third is to choose the file type.

Let's consider all three directions in turn.

The choice of the save location is located right at the top. By default, the computer prompts you to save the file to the Documents folder, which is already on your computer. To see it, click the arrow in the top left corner.

In the picture above, you can see the drop-down menu and the fact that we are now in the folder Library. If you are a Windows Vista user, then you will not see the Library entry. Instead, there will be a record Users. This folder will then contain another folder with the name that the user used when setting up the computer.

For example, Users>Leonid>Documents

Inside the Library folder there is another folder called The documents. We save, for example, our file in this folder. The dialog box also shows other folders that were also in the Documents folder.

You can also create your own folder to store your work in. To do this, click on the button new folder located on top.

You will see a new yellow folder with a blue highlight appear in the dialog box. In the blue highlighted area, type the name of the folder, for example My projects. Then confirm this action by pressing the enter key. The folder will be renamed.

If you make a mistake, click on the folder again. Click again and you will see the same blue highlight. Or press the right mouse button and select from the menu that appears. Rename.

After creating a folder, double click on it to go inside. Pay attention to the top of the dialog box.

Our new folder has appeared to the right of the Documents folder, which means that it is inside it, just like the Documents folder is inside the Library folder. Thus, we have created a folder located inside the documents folder.

Now we need to come up with a name for our document that we are saving. If you look at the bottom of the dialog box Save as, you will see 2 fields. One is called File name, second File type. The Filename field is where you enter the file name. In the File type field, you choose what type your file will be.

Microsof Word documents starting in 2007 end with letters DOCX. In earlier versions they ended with letters Doc. If you want to send a document to someone who has Microsoft Word 2007 ending with docx, then your recipient will not be able to open the received file. This is because previous versions don't know how to handle the new format.

The converse statement is not true. That is, if the owner of Microsoft Word 2007 sends a file ending with the letters Doc to you, then you can open it both in 2007 and in Microsoft Word 2010.

Microsoft Word allows you to save documents in a wide range of formats. Click anywhere on the file type field and you will see the entire list of possible formats.

This image shows that our document belongs to Word 97 - 2003, since the file extension consists of three letters - Doc. The first document in the layout, however, has the extension DOCX, the format we want. Be careful when choosing a format, make sure once again that the choice is correct.

Now pay attention to the filename field. If you click on Save without changing the file name, it will be given a name Doc1. Get a file doc1.docx. This is not a very clear name for the document, so let's change it to something else. To change the filename, simply click inside the Filename field. Delete the previous entry and enter a new name. For example, "My first document".

Your dialog box should look like the image below. If so, click the button Save.

Now our document is saved on the hard drive. To make sure the document is indeed saved, click again on the round Office button at the top of the screen (or File for Word 2010). Select Save as. And in the dialog that appears, you will see the name of your file.

Click the Cancel button to dismiss the Save As dialog box.

You can continue working on the saved document. But if you make changes to your work or add some lines, then do not forget to save the modified document. You do not need to repeat all of the above again. Simply click on the Office or File and Save button or click on the round icon shown below. This will save the changes to your document.

Word 2010

There is another way to save changes to a document. Holding down a key CTRL on the keyboard, press the letter at the same time S. Don't forget to save changes to the file regularly as you work on it. So, in case of an unforeseen situation, for example, a power outage or a computer breakdown, your work will not be in vain, and you will not have to start all over again.
