How to make a long screen. Lesson: Scrolling Screenshot

One way or another, but every person who uses a computer or any other modern gadget, be it a mobile phone, tablet or laptop, eventually faces certain problems: the inability to configure the necessary program; the desire to do away with the annoying error message that pops up on the screen every now and then; incorrect display of a favorite site, and so on. The list of "computer" troubles that cause difficulties for inexperienced users can be continued indefinitely.

In solving the difficulties that have arisen, people are forced to resort to the help of friends, specialists or regulars of thematic forums, for which sometimes just a story about the problem is not enough.

Just for a more effective and efficient solution of the problem, its description, sent to a familiar computer scientist or IT specialists, forum users, should be backed up with a screenshot.

What is Screenshot?

In fact, the meaning of the word "screenshot" is hidden in its constituent parts: a screen (from the English screen - screen) and a shot (shot - a snapshot). That is, a screenshot is nothing more than a screenshot of the user's device. This means that the image obtained using the screenshot will contain everything the same that the author of the screenshot saw at the time of its creation.

Put your camera down

In most cases, the screenshot is a digital image obtained using the built-in capabilities of the operating system or additional software products. In this case, the screenshot is saved to a specified location on a computer or other device, or simply copied to the clipboard for further use.

It is worth noting that quite often people resort to an "alternative" method of taking a screenshot using external recording devices - for example, a camera or camcorder. Screenshots taken in this way are of relatively low quality. Agree, is it stupid to take a screenshot of one phone to another?

It should be noted that, despite the development of computer technology and general technical progress, many people, due to their ignorance and inexperience, continue to take screenshots of their devices in this way.

How to take a screenshot of the screen

The number of ways to create screenshots is comparable to the number of operating systems and software platforms, thanks to which a particular user digital device functions (computer, laptop, netbook, tablet or mobile phone).

All existing operating systems contain similar, but with a number of minor differences, mechanisms for creating screenshots. We will consider this issue in more detail below.

How to take a screenshot on Windows

For the most popular operating system among users - Windows, a huge number of options for creating screenshots are available. Each of them is good in its own way, and the decision, which of them to give preference, entirely falls on the shoulders of the user.

Screenshot in Windows by standard means

The easiest and perhaps the most well-known way to take screenshots in the Windows operating system is to press the Print Screen key (sometimes Prt Scr, PrtSc, etc.) on the keyboard. This key is located on the right side of the keyboard, right above the so-called "arrows".

After pressing this key, the system will copy the full screen image of the computer screen state to the clipboard.

Important! Notebook and netbook owners should generally press the Print Screen key in conjunction with the Fn key due to the fewer buttons on laptop keyboards.

The resulting image can be saved using the popular Paint editor. To do this, after pressing the Print Screen key, open the Paint program (Start - All Programs - Accessories - Paint) and click the Paste button at the top of the screen.

Screenshot taken in this way can also be used bypassing Paint. For example, you can insert the resulting image into the Microsoft Office Word program or into a VKontakte message.

When you press the Print Screen key in combination with the Alt key, the system will take a screenshot of only the active window. This is useful when you do not need to take a huge and unwieldy screenshot of the entire screen.

Scissors tool

Scissors is a tool included in the suite of standard Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10 applications that allows you to take and save a screenshot of an area or the entire screen.

The snapshot obtained using the Scissors can be saved in PNG, JPEG, GIF, HTML formats, or simply sent by mail. It is also convenient to create notes on the resulting screenshot using the built-in Pen and Marker tools.

To start the program, go to (Start - All Applications - Accessories - Scissors). For convenience of further use, a running program can be pinned to the taskbar or its shortcut can be placed on the Desktop.

Screenshot in Windows using third-party programs

There are many programs for taking and saving screenshots in the Windows operating system. Let's consider the most popular ones.

The program for accessing cloud storage services from the giant of the domestic IT industry, in addition to its main functionality, allows you to create screenshots of part or the entire screen.

Using built-in functions, the program allows you to add a note immediately after taking a snapshot.

A distinctive feature of Yandex.Disk from similar programs is the ability to instantly add a file to the cloud and provide other people with access to it via a link.

LightShot is a free and intuitive program for taking screenshots of your computer or laptop screen. The program allows the user to select an area of the screen to take a screenshot of.

The resulting screenshot can be edited, captions and marks can be added to it. Uploading a screenshot to the cloud is also available to share it with other people.

Joxi

Joxi is another free screenshot tool with the ability to edit and save the received screenshots to the cloud. In terms of functionality, this application is very similar to LightShot, however, Joxi has one important function - the ability to share the resulting screenshots on social networks.

How to take a screenshot on Mac OS X

A Mac OS X user can create several types of screenshots using the capabilities of only one operating system:

Full screen screenshot to your desktop.

The keyboard shortcut for creating such a screenshot is as follows: Cmd + Shift + 3. The screenshot will be saved on the computer desktop with a name like "Screenshot 2016-04-06 at 17.23.04.png".

    Full screen screenshot to clipboard.

To create a screenshot of this kind, press the key combination Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 3. The resulting screenshot will be saved to the clipboard, after which it can be pasted, for example, in any graphics editor.

Screenshot of a part of the screen.

A screenshot of a separate part of the screen is perhaps the most popular type of screenshots. After pressing the key combination Cmd + Shift + 4, the user should select the required screen area. The finished screenshot will be available on your desktop.

Screenshot of the active program window.

In this case, the finished screenshot will also be saved to the desktop. To create such a screenshot, press the key combination Cmd + Shift + 4 + Space. Not very convenient, don't you agree?

It is for this reason that the use of third-party software is recommended on Mac OS X as well as on Windows.

Important! The programs Yandex.Disk, LightShot and Joxi are already familiar to the reader are cross-platform, which means they are available in the Mac OS X operating system.

How to take a screenshot in Linux

Essentially, Linux is not a stand-alone operating system. This is a kind of basis on the basis of which dozens of other similar and completely different operating systems, Linux distributions are built. However, very often all distributions use the same shells.

There are no standard tools for taking screenshots in operating systems of the Linux family, but working environments provide their own utilities for these purposes. Let's take a look at the most common Linux desktop environments:

Pressing the Print Screen key in the KDE desktop will open the KSnapshot program, which will allow you to take and save a screenshot to disk or clipboard, as well as transfer it to a graphics editor for further processing.

The GNOME shell allows you to take a screenshot of the entire screen (by pressing the Print Screen key) or part of it (by pressing the Alt + Print Screen combination) using the gnome-screenshot utility. The resulting image can be saved or "dragged" onto the desktop or into a graphics editor.

In Xfce, screenshots are created in a similar way to GNOME and KDE, but with one difference - the xfce4-screenshooter utility is used for these purposes.

    X Window System.

Important! The user does not need to depend on a utility specific to a particular Linux environment. You can always take a screenshot using third-party programs - LightShot or Joxi, for example.

The most common mobile platforms are:

Happy owners of iPhone and iPad have the opportunity to take screenshots of the screens of their devices by simultaneously pressing the Home button (center key) and the screen lock button. The screen will blink, a characteristic sound will be emitted, a screenshot for iOS is ready.

On all modern smartphones and tablets running Android version 4 and higher, a screenshot of the screen is created by simultaneously pressing the power and volume down keys.

However, there are exceptions. So, for example, on some HTC and Samsung models, you need to hold down the power key and press the Home button.

On Windows Phone 8, you can take a screenshot by pressing the power key and the Windows key at the same time. Starting with Windows Phone 8.1, the keyboard shortcut has changed to simultaneously pressing the power button and the volume up button.

In both cases, the resulting image will be saved in the Photo Gallery.

Today I invite you to consider a very interesting problem - how to take a long screenshot from the Android screen. This refers to the creation of a screenshot with a scrolling screen. The task is not trivial and especially typical for capturing web pages that scroll across multiple screens.

It is impossible to make such a screenshot using the built-in Android tools, so in this article I propose to use two Android applications that will greatly facilitate this task.

Taking screenshots from the smartphone screen is a very useful and demanded function. Many users use it for different purposes. But, despite the obvious usefulness of the built-in function, it has a big drawback - only those elements of the screen image that are visible at the time of its creation can be captured on one screenshot. In the old fashioned way, images stretched over several screens can be split into several successive screenshots taken while scrolling through the footcloth.

Relatively recently, to solve this problem, Xiaomi introduced a new function in its MIUI 8th version - "Long Screenshot". The long-awaited function of creating a screenshot for a long web page delighted the owners of the smartphones of the same name. It is easy to operate and resembles the implementation of the image capture function in Panasonic devices. But, after the presentation of the technology for creating screenshots with scrolling the screen, not every Android device was able to implement it in practice. In order to make the feature available, you will have to use third-party tools and perform a few steps on your smartphone.

Warning: in order to activate the long screenshot function on a smartphone without MIUI 8 shell, you will have to download and install a third-party application from the Google Play store. Therefore, take care of connecting the device to the Internet and the availability of free space in your device in advance.

How to create a long scrolling screenshot in the LongShot app

The LongShot app can be freely found and downloaded from the Google Play store. It was specially designed to take long screenshots on Android. The process of taking a screenshot in LongShot is quite simple if you select the desired mode.

Capture mode screenshot

  1. Open LongShot and select the Capture screenshot option.
  2. Once launched, the application will ask you for permission to start working.
  3. Next, LongShot will prompt you to select the application in which you will take a long screenshot.
  4. Open the application you want and click Start. Scroll the pages of the application on the screen in the required range. Click Done to finish taking screenshots.
  5. In this mode, you will receive not one long screenshot, but a series of screenshots cut from the "footcloth" stretched across the screen. You still have to work with them.
  6. You will see a list of screenshots with thumbnails. Delete unnecessary screenshots. To check it, you can view the thumbnail in full format by clicking on it and selecting “View in full screen” from the context menu. Then click on the thumbnail again and select "Delete" if you want to delete it.
  7. If you want to add something else to the long screenshot, click on the plus sign located in the circle and select an additional image.
  8. You can arrange the future long screenshot as you like - vertically or horizontally, in automatic or manual mode, with or without a status bar. To do this, you can click the "Configure" button in the lower left corner of the application and select the required options.
  9. After setting the configuration options, click the "Join" button in the lower right corner of the application.
  10. After some time, which will be spent on processing and "stitching" individual images into the canvas of a long screenshot, you will be taken to the Stitch menu.
  11. Here you will see the project of the future long screenshot, which can be further customized. If everything suits you, just click the Save button in the upper right corner.
  12. If there is something wrong in the project, click one of the Adjust buttons opposite each component and use the options for trimming each frame. For precise and coarse cropping, you can use the "1px" or "10px" buttons, up or down. After trimming, click the Done button and, if you are now satisfied with everything, click Save.

Important note: screenshot files are automatically saved to / storage / emulated / 0 / longshot directory.

At first glance, making a long screenshot is not easy, but believe me - the developers made the process intuitive and understandable. And they've taken care of those looking to take a long screenshot of a multi-screen web page in just a couple of clicks. For this, a special "Capture web page" mode has been created.

  1. In the main menu of the application, click the "Capture web page" button. The built-in LongShot browser will open with the address bar, into which you need to enter the URL of the site, the page of which you need to "screen". The site address can be typed or pasted, having previously copied it in another application. Click the checkmark to open the page.
  2. Next, scroll the site page to the place you need, where the screenshot should start and click the "Set start position" button. The blue horizontal line will indicate where the screenshot will be captured.
  3. Next, scroll down to the section where you need to complete the long screenshot. Be guided by the horizontal pink line.
  4. Click the "End here and capture" button. At this point, a full-length long screenshot with scrolling of the web page will be created.

Key features of the program:

  • Automatically stitches multiple screenshots into one, regardless of whether the image was scrolled horizontally or vertically;
  • auto-captures screenshots while scrolling;
  • Floating capture buttons make it easy to create a series of screenshots;
  • manual image stitching mode for fine-tuning a long screenshot;
  • quick capture of a long web page, just specify the beginning and end and the screenshot is ready;
  • no watermarks, all functions are free, ads can be removed.

Long screenshot of Android webpage in Scroll Capture app

This application is perfect for taking a long screenshot of a web page that is expanded across multiple screens. I note right away that the application is very simple, it couldn't be simpler.

  1. Search for and install the Scroll Capture app on the Google Play store.
  2. Run the application.
  3. Enter in the address bar of the built-in browser the address of the site with the long web page, of which you want to take a screenshot.
  4. If you have previously copied the site address, the application will automatically pick it up and offer to open it in your browser. I do not advise you to refuse, this will further speed up the process of creating a long screenshot.
  5. After opening the page, tap at the bottom of the screen on the icon in the form of camera shutter blades. The desktop image will immediately be filled with a purple tint and will become inaccessible to your touch screen. In the center, a purple paint roller with a pen will move randomly. It's strange why the developer chose this particular symbol ... This is how the process of scanning an image and creating a long screenshot is displayed in such a simple way. It only takes a few moments.
  6. Without any questions and the need to scroll the page, the long screenshot will be automatically saved to the program directory. It is created by default here: -> Pictures> Scroll Capture.

Of course, in addition to the two applications described above, there are dozens of others. Today they can make it easier for you to take a long screenshot on any Android device. But, in my observation, LongShot and Scroll Capture are some of the best, especially for capturing a screenshot of a long web page that spans multiple screens.

IPhone and Android users sometimes need to scroll through, for example, an entire page of a news website or a complete chat in a messenger. In this case, special tools from third-party developers will help to cope with the task.

There are several optimal scrolling screenshot apps that you can easily install from the App Store or Play Store.

iOS

The Tailor app is completely free and very easy to use. The tool allows you to create and automatically merge multiple screenshots. Tailor does a great job of handling long articles, correspondence and plans, combining shots into one large, cohesive image.

For Android

Capturing scrolling screenshots may not be the most essential feature, however, should the user need to complete this kind of task, Tailor and Stitch & Share are great helpers.

One of the most useful features of smartphones from Samsung and Huawei can actually be found on any Android phone. In this case, we mean "Scroll capture", which allows you to take longer screenshots with scrolling of the entire page.

There are many applications that allow you to manually combine screenshots to make them one file, however this is tedious. In our article today, you will learn how to get a scrolling screenshot on your Android device without much hassle.

On Samsung Galaxy smartphones

Introduced to Samsung users in the Note 5 and significantly improved for the Galaxy S7, there is a cool feature called "Capture more". It allows you to take one long screenshot of a page, top and scroll to the bottom, converting it into one file. This feature has been reintroduced in the Galaxy S8 under the new name "Scroll capture" and can of course be enjoyed in the new flagship Galaxy S9 as well. To use this feature, follow these steps:

  1. First enable the “Smart capture” option in the advanced settings menu.
  2. Go to the screen you want to screenshot.
  3. Take a screenshot as usual.
  4. Then click on the "Scroll capture" icon (formerly called "Capture more") in the list of options that will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Keep clicking on "Scroll capture" to continue scrolling down the page until you're done.

On Huawei smartphones

Starting with EMUI 5.0, Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 10 devices allow you to take scrolling screenshots. Below is a step-by-step process:

Alas, not all people can afford a Galaxy or Huawei Mate smartphone. Fortunately, there is a third-party app called Stitch & Share to get out of this tough spot for those without Galaxy phones.

You can take a screenshot of an entire website, news article, or app using Stitch & Share (which can be downloaded from the Play Store). After you download it and grant it the necessary permissions, just take the first screenshot as usual. Scroll down so that only a small portion of what was visible in the first screenshot is still displayed on your screen, then take the next screenshot.

Repeat this step until you have captured whatever you want. Then swipe down to open your phone's notification panel and tap the Stitch & Share notification to open the app. Or you can open the Stitch & Share app and select the screenshots you want to automatically merge into one file. To save a long screenshot, click on the green arrow icon.

With a little tweak, you can start taking screenshots almost instantly.

To see an example of what Stitch & Share is capable of, take a look at the very long max resolution screenshot below. The app has a few drawbacks, namely that the results are not always perfect, and a small watermark will appear at the bottom right if you don't upgrade to the paid version. Overall, however, it is a very handy and useful application.

You can see that the result was not perfect for the text under the title photo, but the body text came out great.
