How to watch fps using fraps. Installing and configuring "Fraps": recommendations and reviews

Configure Fraps- a trifling matter.

In the main window, select whether it will run together in Windows, etc.

In the "FPS" section, you can see that the settings are minimal.

It is better to set the full size in the "Video" window. Then the video will be in HD. Since I work quite closely in Sony Vegas and various converters and know the topic of rendering, transcoding, clamping very well, I decided to conduct several tests to get the best video quality.

In half Fraps mode, we get approximately 640x480. When clamping, we get a mess, since the source is no longer very good. Best option: record video in full HD size and then compress it at a lower bit rate in the converter. Format Factory will do.

In the game, press the F9 button, write a video. Recording will start. This can be understood by how the fps figures showing the number of frames per second turn from yellow to red.

The size of the recorded video will be huge; prepare a place on the hard. For example, when I wrote the chase scene in Medal of Honor, the output of the 7-minute video weighed almost 15 GB! In order to reduce our video, in fact, without losing quality, in FF we select the mp4 container, select the AVC codec (264) and the bitrate 5000 KB / s. After this processing, the seven minutes of the chase turned from 15 GB to about 250-300 MB, which is quite good. The quality of the video is almost not affected, if only to look closely. But, you know, 15 GB and 300 MB, there is a difference.

If you reduce the bitrate, then the normal quality will remain at 4000 KB / s. In my opinion, it makes no sense to make the bitrate below if you recorded video in HD.

In the "Screenshots" window, set where the screenshots and format will go. In the game, just press the F10 button.

In addition to Fraps, I tried to install another interesting program for screen recording in Bandicam games, but for some reason it did not start. As far as I know, she writes in excellent quality, but the videos are lighter in weight than in Fraps.

In addition, Bandicam, according to reviews, does not plant fps during video recording. Fraps boosts fps while recording. When I did a test recording in the game, it was perfectly visible. Watch Dogs game is very demanding on the hardware. Nevertheless, I set it up so that the fps in the game was about 48. Immediately after turning on the video recording mode in Fraps, the number of frames decreased by 15 units and amounted to about 33.

Many novice players ask themselves the question: how to make not only a high-quality, but also a complete screenshot in the game - such that all interface elements, pop-up windows, etc. are displayed? As a rule, in response they give out a small list of programs, which is almost always headed by a program named Fraps. Despite the fact that almost everyone has heard about Fraps, not much has been written about it. And perhaps it remains a mystery for you - where to get this program and how to use it? Now I will tell you about all this.

But why Fraps? - you may ask. - After all, there are a great many such programs! Yes, there are more than enough programs with such functionality, but Fraps is not in vain that it enjoys popular recognition, because it has a number of advantages - simple installation, light weight, an easy-to-use interface and a very high-quality output result. And the most important benefit, especially for users “ The sims 3"- screenshots taken in full-screen mode are obtained with the original brightness, and do not darken, as in the case of using most other similar programs.
You can download a trial version of Fraps from the program's website. The free version is enough to take screenshots. Double-click the downloaded file and the Installation Wizard will start.

Press the button in the window I Agree, in the next window, if you are not satisfied with the "default" path, enter the full path of the program installation in the field or select it via the button Browse, then press the button Next.

Next, click Install - the installation will start, at the end of the installation the button will be activated Close, which we close the Wizard window. The program is installed! We are looking for the program icon on the desktop and launch it by double clicking.
The main window will open with the main settings of the program. Let's go through its tabs and settings items in them.

General Tab - Basic Settings

  1. Start Fraps minimized - The program will be launched minimized (on the taskbar).
  2. Fraps window always on top - The program window will always be in the foreground.
  3. Run Fraps when Windows starts - The program will run together with the operating system.
  4. Monitor Aero desktop (DWM) - Only for Vista and Windows 7. When activating the function, if you are using the Aero desktop, you will be able to record what is happening on it.
  5. Minimize to system tray only - When launched, the program will immediately be minimized to the system tray, without showing the main window. To open the main window, you will need to double-click on the program icon next to the clock. Works only when item 1 is on.

FPS tab - test settings and FPS counter indicator (frames per second)

On this tab, we may be interested only in the FPS indication.

  1. Overlay hotkey - Click on the Enable button and press any key (or key combination) - now, when you press this key in the game, the FPS counter will cycle through the four corners of the screen and disappear on the fifth press. note: it is undesirable to match the Fraps hotkeys with the hotkeys of the game, other programs or the operating system.
  2. Overlay corner - choose in which corner to show the frames per second counter. If you don't need a counter, choose Hide overlay.
  3. Only update overlay once a second - counter data will be updated once a second, and not in real time (slightly reduces the load on the processor)

Movies Tab - Video Capture Settings

In the free version of the program, the duration of video recording is limited to 30 seconds, and the watermark of the authors of the program will also be superimposed on the video.

  1. Folder to save movies in Change - select the folder in which our video will be saved. Button View
  2. Video Capture Hotkey - we put the cursor in the input field and press the key (or combination) that we want to assign to start the video recording process in the game. Button click Disable - will cancel the appointment. When you press this "hot" key in the game, the video capture process will start and the FPS counter (if activated) will change from yellow to red. Pressing the key again will stop video recording.
  3. Video Capture Setting - choose with how many frames per second the video will be recorded - with a fixed 60-50-30, or enter your value in a separate field. Full-size - the size of the video will be equal to the size of the game window. Half-size - the video size will be reduced by half.
  4. Loop buffer length - Allows you to enable "pre-recording" on XX second (that is, if you press the hotkey assigned in step 2 in the game, then the final video will be recorded not from the moment of pressing, but XX seconds earlier). It is convenient if you are afraid of missing an interesting moment, but it requires a lot of resources - we leave it unchanged.
  5. Split movie every 4 Gigabytes - the video will be cut into pieces of 4 gigabytes (convenient for recording on a DVD, for example)
    Sound Capture Settings - audio capture settings (example for Windows 7):
  6. Record Win7 sound - all sounds played on the computer will be recorded. Stereo - the sound will be mixed into two channels (left + right), Multichannel - the number of recorded sound channels will correspond to the settings of the sound reproducing devices of the operating system.
  7. Record external input - additionally record sound from the external audio input of the computer assigned in the system as input "by default" (microphone or line input).
  8. Only capture while pushing - "external" sound will be recorded only if the key assigned in the input field is pressed (to assign a key - click on the field and press the desired button).
  9. Hide mouse cursor in video - the mouse cursor will not be visible on the recorded video.
  10. Lock framerate while recording - The FPS in the game will not rise above the assigned FPS for the video.
  11. Force lossless RGB capture (may be slower) - record video in uncompressed form, in RGB (Red-Green-Blue) color system. Produces videos of the highest possible quality. Requires large processor resources and a very capacious and high-speed HDD. Not recommended.

Screenshots Tab

So we got to the most interesting thing - the settings for capturing images in the game.

  1. Folder to save screenshots in - Click on the input field or on the button Change - select the folder in which our screenshots will be saved. Button View - will open the save folder.
  2. Screen Capture Hotkey - we put the cursor in the input field and press the key (or combination) that we want to assign to take a screenshot in the game. Button click Disable - will cancel the appointment. When you press a key in the game, the FPS counter (if activated) will wink at us with a white background.
  3. Image Format - the format of the captured pictures. In the free version, only BMP - the picture will be of the largest volume (to upload pictures to hosting sites, it will need to be converted to a different format in any graphics editor), but at the same time of maximum quality.
    Screen Capture Settings:
  4. Include frame rate overlay on screenshots - will show the FPS counter on your captured pictures.
  5. Repeat screen capture every XX seconds - when you press the capture key, a snapshot will be taken automatically every XX seconds. Press the key again to stop the process.

In conclusion, consider the menu that can be invoked by right-clicking on the program icon in the system tray.

More than simple and convenient to configure and use, even though this utility is still not officially Russified, and all the "homemade" Russifiers, as one, leave much to be desired.

Despite this, dealing with it, most likely, will not be particularly difficult. So, let's begin.

Setting "General" in Fraps

The main setup menu in Fraps. Here, users are offered settings that determine the behavior of Fraps in the system. You can rebuild them as you like. This will not affect the recording and quality of video with sound.

Start Fraps minimized- run Fraps minimized;

Fraps window always on top- always show Fraps on top of other open windows;

Run Fraps when Windows starts- run Fraps together with the Windows system;

Minimize to system tray only- always minimize the program window to the system tray (tray).

Setting "FPS" in Fraps

In this menu you can check performance your computer when recording video, expressed in fps (frames per second). The higher the FPS, the smoother and smoother the video will play. Be sure to test your car and remember the result.

Folder to save benchmarks in- specify the directory / folder to save test results ( Change- change, View- open);

Benchmarking hotkey- quick button to start tests;

Benchmark Settings- test settings ( FPS- display of the frame rate, Frametimes- micro delays, MinMaxAvg- work log);

Stop benchmark after () seconds- stop tests after () seconds;

Overlay hotkey- a shortcut key to show the overlay (an indicator icon showing the current test results);

Overlay corner- specify the location of the overlay on the screen;

Hide overlay- hide / hide the overlay;

Setting up "Movies" in Fraps

A menu where you can fine-tune the quality of the recorded video and sound, as well as set some additional related functions and parameters.

Folder to save movies in- create a folder where you want to save the recorded video ( Change- change / assign, View- open);

Video Capture Hotkey- assign a hot button to start recording;

Video Capture Settings- video quality settings, where you can specify the number fps and also full ( Full-size) or half size ( Half-size);

When setting these settings, first of all, proceed from the performance of your PC's hardware. Focus on results testing in setup "FPS"... Also, keep in mind that all video files recorded in Fraps (regardless of quality) are too large in size. Therefore, the optimal size / quality parameters are approximately as follows: 30 fps + Full-size (full size)... Although, all the same, you then have to use some kind of video converter to further reduce the size of the video recorded in Fraps.

Split movie every 4 gigabytes- automatically split video into separate files every 4 gigabytes;

Sound Capture Settings- sound recording settings;

Run Win7 Record- to record the main sound, i.e. what you hear from the speakers ( Stereo- stereo sound, Multichannel- multichannel sound);

Record external input- enable microphone recording;

Only capture while pushing- assign a button to enable microphone recording;

Hide mouse cursor in video- do not display the mouse cursor on the recorded video.

Configuring "Screenshots" in Fraps

Here you can find all the settings related to screenshots - screenshots.

Folder to save screenshots in- specify the folder where you want to save screenshots ( Change- change, View- open);

Screen Capture Hotkey- assign an instant key for screenshots;

Image format- select the format in which you want to save screenshots (jpg, bmp, tga, png);

Include frame rate overlay on screenshots- leave an overlay (icon-indicator of PC performance indicators) on screenshots;

Repeat screen capture every () seconds- automatically create screenshots every () seconds.

These are, in fact, all the basic and important settings for Fraps. As you can see, in reality, there is nothing complicated!

Note: The system bar is a set of miniature icons for active programs that can be found at the edge of the bar. Running applications are minimized here, and on the opposite side there is a button “ Start».

These options can be turned on or off by checking the boxes.

FPS tab

Designed for testing Fraps the power of the computer's graphics adapter by monitoring the number of frames per second ( fps). The norm is 30 fps or higher. If this figure is less than 30, then the gameplay will not be comfortable and will entail overheating of the video card with the ensuing consequences. For check fps fraps will be useful to those who follow the use of each gigabytes random access memory.

This tab contains the following functions:

  • "Folder to save benchmarks in"... Here you can specify a directory on disk where test results will be placed.
  • Benchmarking Hotkey... Key to run the performance test from the very start.
  • Benchmark Settings... Performance test settings. These include: " FPS" (Frame frequency), Frametimes(frame time), " MinMaxAvg"(Maximum, minimum and average frames per second). You can mark the necessary checkboxes, but to check the effectiveness of their use, you should study in advance lessons in the Internet.
  • "Stop benchmark after ... seconds"... If you check this option, then the performance test will end not when you press the test start button again, but after a specified number of seconds.

  • "Only update overlay once a second"... By default, the counter displays the number of frames per second in real time. If you enable this option, the value will be updated once per second.

Rice. 7 "FPS" window

View performance counter

If Fraps performance counter display is enabled, it will be displayed not only during a video game, but also during video playback. That is, using the Fraps software, you can make it considered performance when playing video of different quality.

In this case, the number of frames per second will be measured when playing video with a resolution of 1920x804. The system is equipped with an Intel Core i7 860 central processor with a maximum frequency of 8.2 GHz. Counter considered frames in the upper left corner, update is enabled once per second:

When you turn on the video, the number of frames per second is displayed (highlighted in green in the figure):

Rice. 9 Video playback performance test.

Performance testing

Separate customization Fraps allows you to test the performance and save the results to a file. An example is shown in the figure below:

Here the directory for saving is selected by default; F11". Only the indicators " FPS"(Number of frames per second), and testing will end 30 seconds after starting. Start a video or a game, press the " F11”And wait 30 seconds.

Then go back to Fraps and click on the “ View". A window with test results will open.

Movies Tab

It is intended for adjusting the video that you want to shoot.

The following settings are available here:

  • "Folder to save movies in"... Directory for saving video recordings. It can be changed by clicking on the " Change».
  • "Video Capture Hotkey"... Key to start video recording.
  • "Video Capture Settings"... Here you can specify the number of frames per second (the higher the quality, the larger the video file size), as well as its size (you can select “ Half-size", Then the video frame size will be 2 times smaller).

If you want to record video and sound, check the box "Record Win7 sound"... Here you can select the sound recording mode: stereo ( Stereo) or multichannel ( Multichannel).

If you want to record a voice commentary, you should use option " Record external input ", by checking the appropriate box. You can also customize work Fraps so that the sound from the microphone is recorded only when a special key is held down, which can also be specified.

  • "Hide mouse cursor in video"... Hides the mouse cursor on the summary record.
  • "Lock framerate while recording"... Fixes the frame rate at the time of video recording.
  • Force lossless RGB capture... Forced video capture without loss of quality. It is recommended to activate this parameter only if it does not lead to a decrease in the write speed.

To record a video, launch a game or film, then press the " F9" (in this case). Press this key again after you finish recording. Fraps will save to the specified directory (in this example "C: / Fraps / Movies"). To open it, click the " View". You can postpone the moment of video recording using the option “ Loop buffer length". The essence of " Loop buffer length"Is that the program will start recording after the amount of time specified in the line (expressed in seconds).

Select an option as needed. This means that if the mode "Split movie every 4 Gigabytes" will be activated when the recorded video file reaches a size of more than 4 GB, it will be divided into two documents - one up to 4 GB, the other depending on the remaining time rate.

Note: The resulting video can take up quite a lot of space. For information on how you can compress and recode a video, read the material "" and also "". Here's a helpful instruction, available lessons in text and video format.

Screenshots Tab

Allows you to take screenshots by pressing a hotkey that you can assign yourself. As in the previous modes, here you can specify the address of the directory (in this case, save images), as well as a hotkey - respectively settings "Folder to save screenshots in" and Screen Capture Hotkey.

V Fraps 4 types of image files are available (BMP, JPG, PNG, TGA), which can be set by choice in option Image Format... Only BMP format is available in the free version. If you want the frame counter to be saved in the final image, activate the option "Include frame rate overlay on screenshots" in Group "Screen Capture Settings"(image capture settings). Here you can configure Fraps so that the image is created in the specified number of seconds. To stop creating images, press the Hotkey again.

To capture an image, start the game and press the hotkey.

This concludes the overview of the main features of Fraps. If you have any questions, please use the comments form. You can also read here

Now there are many programs for recording video from a computer screen. One of the most popular is Fraps. Why are many users so fond of it? First, because Fraps has a free version, and on the Internet you can download unofficial free versions of the program, which have almost all the features of the paid ones. Second, for the program you can install crack, it is quite easy to use, with it you can record high quality video, as well as count the number of frames per second and take screenshots. Although Fraps also has disadvantages (for example, a large volume of video files that are produced in the output), it is obvious that there are many more advantages.

You can familiarize yourself with other programs for shooting video from a computer screen, as well as from an iPad screen.

So, we will assume that you have already installed the program. It is not difficult to use it. When you open Fraps, you will see a top horizontal menu with four tabs: “ The main», « FPS», « Video" and " Screenshot».

First, let's set up the "Main" menu, which includes the following options (in case you have a non-Russified version, we will also list the English version of the names):

  • Start Fraps minimized;
  • Fraps windows always on top;
  • Run Fraps when Windows starts.

With these options, everything is clear from their names. Just put a checkmark in front of them if you want to enable the option, and uncheck it if you need to disable it.

But the following settings may not be clear to everyone.

  • Monitor aero desktop(DWM) (DWM Desktop Aero Monitor). This option applies only to Vista and Windows 7 and makes it possible to work with a special window manager. DWM is a dynamic tile-based window manager that allows you to quickly switch between program windows, which saves the user time. By enabling this mode in Fraps, you will be able to capture video from your screen if you are using DWM. If not, then just ignore this option;
  • Minimize to system tray only(Minimize to tray). If you check the box in front of this option, then the program will start and automatically minimize to the tray, you will see its icon only on the taskbar - where you have the clock, volume, and so on. Fraps will be displayed as an icon with its logo. And the program will open in front of you when you click on this icon.

Let's go further. The "FPS" (Frames Per Second) menu tab is used to measure performance, for example, in games. In this tab you will find the folder address ( Folder to save benchmarks in), where the program will automatically save test results, this address can be changed.

There are two more options below:

  • Benchmarking Hotkey(Performance check). Here you can set a hotkey for starting or stopping the test. And under this key you can designate the data that will be recorded - "Benchmark Settings" (Settings for the test): "Frame rate", "Frame time", "Operation log";
  • Overlay hotkey(Key for changing the location of the overlay). What does it mean? When you opened the program, you probably noticed that in the upper left corner you have a small black square with yellow running numbers. In this case, this is an overlay with an indicator that shows the number of frames. When recording starts, the numbers on the indicator will turn red. You can change its location by choosing one of the four corners, or you can turn it off altogether. You can also change the hotkey, with which you can change the location of the overlay from the keyboard without opening the program window ("Overlay Hotkey").

Advice: it is better not to turn off the indicator, otherwise during recording it will be difficult for you to understand what is happening.

There are also several options here, for example:

You can also select a folder to save video files and set a hotkey;

  • Video capture key ( Video Capture Settings). Setting a hotkey with which you will shoot a video. You can leave "F9" by default, but if you shoot games, then this key is often used in them, so in order to avoid confusion, it is better to change it;
  • Video capture settings ( Video Capture Settings). These are video quality settings: resolution and number of frames per second (“fps”). You can set two resolution options: Full-size or Half-size;
  • On the right are the sound settings. We will dwell on them in more detail a little later.

The next menu is "Screenshots". Of course, many of us know using a special key on the computer keyboard "PRTSC".

But if you already have Fraps, why not use it as a handy tool for taking screenshots in one click? When you use "PRTSC", then you need to paste this image somewhere and save. Fraps will save you time, especially convenient is that all screenshots are saved in one folder and are easy to find.

In the options, you can select the file format for "screenshots", as well as change the hotkey from the standard to your own. To take a screenshot, just press the hotkey and you're done.

To shoot a video, first set the necessary settings in the corresponding menu. Then minimize the program window and press the hotkey to record video. If you have not changed the default settings, this is the "F9" key... After that, you will see red numbers on the indicator, which will show the number of frames per second. To stop capturing video from the screen, press the hotkey again. The numbers on the indicator will then turn yellow again.

To see what happened in the end, open the window with the program and in the menu " Video"Next to the address of the folder where your files are saved, you will see a button" View". By clicking on it, you will find all the videos that you managed to shoot. They will be recorded in avi format.

As mentioned above, video files in Fraps are voluminous, so all unnecessary videos, for example, trial or unsuccessful ones, are best deleted immediately so as not to "clog" your computer's memory.

If you want sound to be recorded in addition to the image on the screen, then with Fraps you can easily do this. Let's take another look at the menu “ Video". To record a video with sound from the computer speakers, check the box next to “ Record Win7 sound”, Then select“ Stereo ”or“ Multichannel ”sound quality.

To record sound from a microphone, select the “ External source recording", You can also activate" Record only when pressed"And select a hotkey to enable / disable, by default it is a space (" Space"). If this option is activated, you can stop recording sound and resume again if necessary (for example, so that no extraneous noises or sounds are not recorded).

Some users complain that Fraps does not record sound or only records in one form: either from speakers or from a microphone. Most likely, this problem is not related to the program itself, but to the Windows sound settings. Make sure you have your mixer set up correctly, and if you choose to record audio from the microphone, make sure the OS speech recognition is enabled.

How long to shoot with Fraps?

If you can shoot a video that is only 30-60 seconds long, then you are the owner of Fraps trial version, which does not have the full set of functions, unlike the licensed one.

In order to shoot with Fraps for a long time, you need to purchase a license. And if you are sorry to spend money on it, you can download the “cracked” (hacked) version of the program on the Web. However, keep in mind that by doing this, you can get a poor-quality product with errors or, even worse, infect your computer with some kind of virus, for example, catch such an unpleasant "beast" as "".
