Ways to bypass the pattern on Android for advanced users
You can remove the graphic key using a specialized file manager. How does it work in practice? When you install a pattern, a special file is created in the file system. It contains all the information about the key. In order to disable the password, you just need to delete this file. How to do it? Use a special software called AROMA File Manager.
In addition, the gadget must have CWM or the Recovery menu. The algorithm of actions is as follows:
- Download the file manager in ZIP format (this is an important point, you do not need to unzip the file);
- We send the program to the phone's memory card using a PC;
- Insert a memory card into the phone;
- Reboot Recovery (press the power and volume buttons at the same time);
- Select "Install ZIP from SD card", specifying the required archive, and confirm this action. After that, the file manager will start;
- We pass into DATA/SYSTEM, there we find the file gesture.key. (or, alternatively, password.key) and remove it.

Numerous data leaks have repeatedly proven that the most common passwords (and also the most vulnerable) are all sorts of variations on the theme “password”, “ [email protected]$$w0rd" and "1234567". When graphic keys were introduced to Android in 2008, it seemed like they could make a difference. Now it becomes clear that the situation with graphic keys differs little from the situation with ordinary passwords. Marte Løge, a graduate of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, conducted research on this topic during her master's thesis. Løge read her report entitled “Tell me who you are, and I will tell you what your graphic password looks like” at the PasswordsCon conference in Las Vegas.
Since graphical keys are still relatively young, and it is difficult to collect a large number of examples of real keys "from life", Löge's sample turned out to be small - she analyzed 4,000 Android lock Patterns (ALP). Nevertheless, the data obtained at the output turned out to be interesting.
“People are predictable. In the case of picture passwords, we are seeing the same approach that people take when creating PINs and regular alphanumeric combinations,” Løge told the conference. An ALP can contain at least 4 nodes and no more than 9, which gives a total of 389,112 possible combinations. Just like with regular passwords, the number of combinations increases exponentially with the length of the pattern.
In general, the main data collected are as follows:
- 44% of ALPs start from the top left node
- 77% start in one of the four corners of the screen
- 5 - the average number of nodes involved in the graphic password, that is, the cracker will have to go through less than 8,000 combinations
- In many cases, the graphic password consists of 4 nodes, and this is already less than 1,624 combinations
- Most often, ALP is entered from left to right and from top to bottom, which also greatly facilitates the selection
Løge asked respondents to create three different ALPs: for a banking app, for a shopping app, and for unlocking a smartphone.
Unfortunately, the men and women interviewed overwhelmingly created 4-5 knot keys. The least popular among users, for an unclear reason, were passwords with a length of 8 nodes, and even passwords from the maximum 9 nodes scored more "votes".

Men generally come up with more complex and longer passwords than women. The most difficult passwords are for young men. The illustration below shows the difference in password complexity:
However, the number of nodes is not the only important factor in creating a reliable pattern. The specific sequence in which nodes are connected is also key to such a password. If we assign numbers to the nodes of the password, arranging them in the same way as they are located on the keyboard of a regular phone, it turns out that the sequence 1, 2, 3, 6 is much less secure than 2, 1, 3, 6, which changes direction.
Here again, men choose more reliable combinations, such as the sequence 2, 3, 1. Women almost never choose combinations with intersections. Løge notes that people generally have difficulty remembering highly complex patterns.
A team of researchers formalized the system for assessing the complexity of graphic keys back in 2014 by presenting the document “Dissecting pattern unlock: The effect of pattern strength meter on pattern selection”.
Based on this system for evaluating the reliability of combinations, Löge received the following figures: the most insecure password among the respondents scored 6.6 points, the most reliable - 46.8 points. The average password strength was 13.6 points.
Among other things, graphic keys turned out to be subject to the same “disease” as alphanumeric passwords, for which users often use ordinary words. More than 10% of the passwords received by Löge turned out to be ordinary letters that users drew on the screen. Worse, it almost always turned out that this was not just a letter, but the first letter of the name of the interviewee himself, his spouse, child, and so on. If an attacker is trying to hack into a smartphone and knows the name of the victim, everything becomes quite simple.
“It was very funny to see that people use the same memorization strategy that they are used to using alphanumeric passwords. The same way of thinking,” said Löge. It turns out that if the attackers manage to collect a sufficiently large number of graphic keys, they will be able to use the Markov model, which will significantly increase their chances of success. Løge did not focus on this hacking method in her report for ethical reasons.
Løge concluded with a series of tips on how to make ALP safer. First, you should use more nodes in the graphic key, which will make the password more complex. Secondly, it is worth adding intersections, as they make it difficult for attackers to select a combination and help confuse an attacker if he decides to peep the password over the victim's shoulder. Thirdly, it is worth disabling the "show pattern" option in the Android security settings: if the lines between the dots are not displayed on the screen, it will become even more difficult to spy on your password.

There are over ten ways to reset your lock screen. Let's consider each of them in detail. Choose a method depending on the capabilities of your phone and the skills of using the gadget.
Method 1 – Simple Password Reset
If, in addition to the graphic key, a digital code is also installed on the phone, you can easily restore access to the device. Try to enter the pattern several times until all attempts are exhausted. After that, a system message will appear in the smartphone window stating that the input is suspended. Click on the "Unblock in another way" button.
The screen for entering the digital short password appears. Type it in and the phone will unlock automatically. It is worth noting that this method is only suitable for those who have previously configured several phone activation methods. If the Bypass utility was installed on your phone in advance, to unlock it, just send an SMS to the device with the text “1234 reset” (without quotes). Bypass will scan the message texts and, having found the secret text in one of them, will restart the smartphone and remove the graphic element.
After restoring access, immediately go to the phone's security settings and disable the lock function.
Method 3 - Dead Battery
This method is suitable for any Android smartphone. However, it takes time and attention. You should wait until the phone is discharged and a notification window appears about the critical battery charge.
In this window, you can click on the "Battery Status" button. After that, you will be redirected to the menu for viewing battery usage statistics. You do not need to enter a graphic key for this.

Method 4 - Sign in to a personal Google account
If the user incorrectly enters a graphic shape several times (more than 5 attempts), a notification will appear on the screen that you need to wait half a minute before trying again. At this point, the "Forgot your key?" button also appears. By clicking on this field, you will be redirected to the Google account login window.

Method 8 - Deleting a key using an additional account
This method is only suitable if the phone has several authorized users and root rights. Each user account must have the SuperSU utility running in multi-user mode.

Log into the account of the second user and run SuperSU. Go to the dataàsystem window and delete the file that contains the pattern, as well as objects with the extension db, db-wal and db-shm– objects of local phone settings.
Method 9 - Calling the Recovery menu and resetting the settings
This option is also suitable for any Android smartphone or tablet. To delete a forgotten key, you must reset the settings to the original settings. This feature is provided on all phones, and the process is enabled through the settings window.
