I continue my series of articles about the appearance of Windows. This time I will talk about customizing the appearance of windows, their borders, fonts and sizes.

There are many settings to change the appearance Windows windows. Perhaps not all users are satisfied standard view windows, font or border. Or you just want to delve into the settings for the appearance of the system.

Windows has the ability to change themes. To do this, just click right click mice by empty space desktop and select Personalize. This menu provides a choice various topics design, change the color of windows, turn on / off.

Topics

For expansion standard list themes, you can download any themes you like from the Internet, but most of these themes do not have digital signature, therefore, to install them, some manipulations will be required. I will talk about this in future articles.

Window color

By clicking on the Window color button, you can customize color scheme windows. Can choose ready-made templates and adjust the color set manually. Also, in this window you can turn transparency on and off.

The Advanced Appearance Options menu contains a huge set of options for customizing windows.

Window appearance

Now we will consider only some of these settings.

Font change

AT recent times I began to notice that most of the users of the "seven" use the standard theme, which the developers affectionately called Aero.

In my opinion, it is overly focused on tablets. Huge window control buttons and overly wide window titles and borders tell us this - all this makes the interface somewhat cumbersome. In addition, the developers were too clever with a variety colors: all these transparencies, transfusions, gradients and other delights create a kind of muddy effect.

Perhaps someone likes it so much, someone is indifferent, someone is used to it, and someone simply does not know that all this can be changed.

Visual Styles
Visual styles include all graphics for windows, controls, backgrounds, and font settings. This list does not include, perhaps, only the "Start" button, the "Forward" and "Back" navigation buttons, as well as icons.
Themes
A bunch of themes can be found on DeviantArt "e.

Themes are just a file describing what should be used. This includes the visual style itself, some icons, screensavers, wallpapers, cursors and some other elements.

It is worth mentioning that sometimes topics can be targeted to different settings Taskbars. So, for example, for a large taskbar on the right and for a small one on top, different topics. Usually, developers add an appropriate prefix to them, such as "Top" or "Left".

Installing themes

All themes are stored in the path %SystemRoot%\Resources\Themes\. After that, they can be selected in the "Personalization" window.

But not everything is so simple. Initially, it is forbidden to install unsigned Microsoft themes. To get around this limitation, you need to patch three dll "ki. For this, there is a simple open-source program called Universal Theme Patcher for Windows(Off. site, download, mirror).
Disable UAC, run with administrator rights and click on the three Patch buttons. This operation absolutely safe, in addition, the program automatically makes a backup so that you can restore the original files in case of emergency. For 64bit it is recommended to patch with both versions. the system contains both 32 and 64 bit dlls at the same time.
After that, we restart the computer.

Now it remains to move desired topics in %SystemRoot%\Resources\Themes\ and select them in Personalize. By doing this, you will see that the window design has changed, but the Start and navigation buttons remain. The thing is that they are tightly “wired” into system files. Therefore, most themes now come with already modified files that will simply need to be replaced.

System file replacements

Here we also buried a dog. In order to replace system files with our modified versions, we need to get the owner status of those files. To do this, we will use the TakeControl utility (download, mirror). Run as administrator and add the following files to the list:
  • C:\Windows\exlporter.exe
  • C:\Windows\System32\ExplorerFrame.dll
  • C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll
  • C:\Windows\System32\timedate.cpl
Lazy people can just import list.fls, which is next to the program :)
Then click on "Take control" and wait for the end of the process. Reboot is not required.

Now we only have to replace original files on those available in the topic. To do this, add to source files prefix _old, then move the patched file to the place of the old one. You can do it easier and use Theme Manager, the link to which is just below. He will do everything himself.

ATTENTION:

  1. Theme developers usually make two versions system files: for x86 and for 64 separately.
  2. Don't be lazy to check file versions! If they do not converge, then most likely you will have to do a recovery via live-cd or "System Restore"
  3. After replacing shell32.dll, you may lose multichannel sound.

Reboot and see the updated appearance.

Additional setting

Sometimes it happens that the authors shove some non-Cyrillic fonts into the theme, make them bold italic , or just the size is too small. This is where Color and Appearance Settings come to the rescue. In them, you can change the colors used, fonts and sizes for each separate type elements. By the way, this also includes frames and titles, that is, you can change their size, though on standard theme in some places artifacts appear from this.

Icons

You probably didn't quite notice. standard icons in my taskbar. This can be done in two ways: manually create a bunch of shortcuts, change icons in them and shove them onto the socket, or use the 7conifier utility (download, mirror).

It automatically replaces icons desired applications based on the rules described in package.xml. Everything is quite simple here, so it makes no sense to explain on the fingers.

And on the same deviart, there are ready-made packs that almost completely replace system icons. One of the most popular is Faenza IconPack, which is so violently hated on the lore.

We simplify our life

I will give below short review some useful programs that can help you set up.
Theme Manager (Off. site, download, mirror)

Allows you to install themes with just one click. You just have to indicate necessary files and install the theme, specify the name and apply. A feature of the program is that you can save topics with all resources in zip containers. Moreover, this feature is, as it were, hidden from the eyes - it can only be called up with the help of hot Ctrl keys+ E and Ctrl + I.
Logon Screen Changer (download, mirror)

And with the help of this softkit, you can change the background of the welcome screen, as well as change some other parameters.
Navigation Panel Customizer (Off. site, download, mirror)

This is an easy way to remove desired items from the left menu of Explorer.
Taskbar Item Pinner (Official site, download, mirror)

And with this thing, you can attach absolutely any element to the Taskbar, be it a folder, file, or even a separator.

Instruction

Folder view settings in Windows 7 are largely hidden from the user. As a standard, you can only open a folder and use the slider in the upper right part of the window to adjust the display according to the principle: large or small icons, tiles, list, table. Sometimes these settings are remembered for some folders, but most often you have to set them up each time you open them.

Open any folder through "My Computer" or in any other way. The main thing is that you have at least one folder open. Then press the Alt key on your keyboard. When you press, under address bar at the top of the folder window, the usual old Windows versions menu bar File/Edit/View/Tools/Help. Release Alt and select the appropriate folder options from the View menu. You can customize how directories are grouped, such as by name, size, or creation date.

When you have configured everything you need, select the "Tools" menu item and in it the "Folder Options" submenu. A settings window will open with three tabs: General, View, and Search.

Activate the "View" tab by clicking on it with the mouse button. You will see two parts of the settings window: "Folder View" and "Advanced Options".

Click the "Apply to folders" button at the top of the window so that all folders are displayed with the settings that you have set. If you change your mind, just click the "Cancel" button and reconfigure the view of the directories.

Also in the section additional options check the appropriate boxes. For example, if you do not want to press Alt to bring up the folder menu, check the box next to "Always show the menu". Another one convenient opportunity of this menu - the "Restore defaults" button. It is very useful in cases where for some reason the settings were not applied, or set incorrectly. Instead of long search reasons, just reset all settings to initial state and then change them to your liking.
