How to connect the system unit to the TV as a monitor. How to connect a computer to a TV? Wired and wireless methods

Do you still remember how we used to watch movies using a VHS or DVD player? Before enjoying watching a movie, sitting comfortably on the couch, it was necessary to perform a kind of ritual. We inserted a disc into a player or a cassette into a tape recorder and pressed a couple of buttons on the remote control. And before that, you should once spend a little time setting up the equipment. Everything was simple and convenient. With the advent of computers and unlimited Internet in our homes, it has become much more convenient and at the same time a little more difficult. We've had access to so many films that our once-proud collection of discs is now nostalgic at best. At the same time, we had a chance to master the possibilities of new technology.

A modern TV has already become a computer in itself, but still connecting a regular PC or laptop to it opens up interesting possibilities.

No matter how good the monitor is, the TV will be better for viewing. First of all, because of the larger screen size, and often because of the higher image quality. After all, TVs are created taking into account the wishes of movie lovers. However, using the TV as a monitor, you can not only experience the bliss of watching movies. The big screen is also great for gaming, watching photos and YouTube videos, etc. You can even chat on social networks and Skype. And in general, the TV can be used as a monitor. Trust me, it's worth a try! In addition, connecting the TV to the computer does not need to turn off the monitor. You can use both displays in turn. For example, watch movies on a large panel, and surf the Web on a monitor.

We will tell you how to connect a TV to a computer. Connecting a computer and laptop to a TV is the same. Therefore, our advice is relevant in both cases. We will take a closer look at how a computer is configured using Windows 7 as an example. This version of the system is often installed on home computers.

The easiest way to connect is with an HDMI cable. In consumer audio and video equipment, this interface has firmly taken the place of the best, and now it has begun to be used in computer technology. Your TV, if it belongs to modern LCD or plasma models, will surely have an appropriate input. If several versions of the HDMI. Now almost all AV equipment has already switched to HDMI 1.4 (1.4a or 1.4b), which fully satisfies our needs, including the transmission of Full HD 3D video.

PC IN - this is often called the VGA input (PC input), but this is already an obsolete option

Our choice is HDMI!

First, check if your desktop or mobile computer has it. The HDMI port on a desktop PC should be looked for on the back panel of the system unit (more precisely, on the motherboard or video card), and on a laptop - on the right or left side of the case. Is there such a port? Good. You will need an HDMI cable. On the one hand, it connects to the computer, and on the other - to the TV. The advantage of HDMI cables is that their length varies from 1 to 20 meters. Choose a cable of the length you need - you should not overpay for "extra meters". The second advantage of HDMI cables is that they carry not only video but also audio. By connecting a computer to a TV via HDMI, you can use the built-in TV speakers. If there are no acoustics at hand, then this is a good compromise. Let the speakers on the TV be modest, but it’s better to be like that than to have no sound at all.

So, for clarity, let's divide the process of the first connection into steps:

1) First of all, unplug your computer and TV from the network. If your TV is connected to a cable from a collective antenna, disconnect it for now.

2) Connect the HDMI cable to the corresponding ports on the TV and computer. Connect both devices to the network.

3) Turn on your computer and wait for Windows to load.

4) Turn on the TV and select in its menu (using the remote control or buttons on the case) the HDMI input to which you connected the cable. Modern TVs usually have several of these inputs. In the TV menu, they will be labeled something like this: HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.

Before diving headlong into the world of cinema, you should also set up Windows. So that the computer perceives the TV as a monitor. Let's divide the setup process into several steps:

1) Right-click on the "Desktop" Windows and select "Screen Resolution" from the context menu. The Display Settings menu appears. You will see which monitor is connected to the computer, what resolution it has, and what image orientation is selected.

2) Click on the "Find" button that the computer has found the TV. In the "Screen" line, in addition to the monitor, a second item will appear (in our case, this is SONY TV - see screenshot). This is our TV. Yours will most likely have a different name. In the future, Windows will "remember" the second monitor and it will be displayed in this menu when you connect the TV. By default, "Orientation" will be landscape - you do not need to change this item. Check that the proposed resolution (in the paragraph of the same name) matches the resolution of your LCD or plasma panel. By the way, if in the TV settings there is an item to display a pixel-by-pixel image, activate it.

3) Here we are in for a surprise. Windows allows you not only to use a TV instead of a monitor, but also to use it together with a monitor. There are two use cases. First, you can "clone" the image on the displays. Moreover, even if they have different size, resolution and aspect ratio. Secondly, you can expand the "Desktop" to both screens. In this case, for example, the child can watch cartoons on the TV, and you can do your own business on the computer using the monitor. You can select the mode in the "Multiple screens" line.

4) When connecting a TV with an HDMI cable, you can use its built-in speakers. After all, the HDMI interface provides for the transmission of video and sound over a single cable. All you have to do is tell Windows that you want to use the TV for sound output. In Control Panel, select Sound. A menu of the same name will appear, in which you will see a list of sound devices. It should have an item with the word HDMI in the title (we have AMD HDMI Output). Select this item and click on the "Default" button - the sound will go to the TV speakers. When you turn off the TV, the corresponding item in this menu will disappear ... and will appear the next time you connect it. And to activate a regular sound card, you need to perform a similar operation in the "Sound" menu (we have "Speakers").

What if the computer or laptop does not have an HDMI port? In this case, you must use alternative interfaces: DVI, DisplayPort, or use a device such as. Your computer must have a DVI or VGA port, because a monitor is usually connected to it, but DisplayPort is still rare. In terms of quality, DVI or DisplayPort is best. TVs usually do not have such inputs, so you need to use an adapter or a special DVI-HDMI or DisplayPort-HDMI adapter. If your TV has such an input, use a regular DVI-DVI or DisplayPort-DisplayPort cable. And the connection and setup process is the same as with HDMI. Except for the step about setting the sound.

Memo: what connectors do modern TVs have (HDMI 3, 4, 5 and 6 on the left in the top row)

If your PC does not have an HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort port, you can use a VGA or other analog interface (S-Video, etc.) connection. True, this option will not be ideal in terms of signal transmission quality. Therefore, an analog connection for modern TVs should be used when it is not possible to connect via one of the digital interfaces.

When connecting the TV to a PC to watch videos, no special settings are required. You watch movies the same way as before: you use the same player and watch the same files. When you use a big screen TV for gaming, then in their graphics settings, select the same screen resolution as your TV. In the vast majority of cases - HD (1366×768) or Full HD (1920×1080). Also, check your TV settings to see if it has a dedicated Game mode. When selected, the TV is optimally configured to make games look spectacular, and responds most quickly to commands, which is important for dynamic games. By the way, some models with passive 3D technology have a two-player game mode on one screen with different images for each person (for example, LG 55LM960V and Philips 46PFL8007T).

Recently, TVs have received many new features. So, it is already difficult to imagine modern TVs without the function of displaying 3D video and the Smart TV software shell. In addition, they have improved switching capabilities. New models of LCD panels and plasmas can be connected to a computer wirelessly - via Wi-Fi! More precisely, the TV connects to a local wireless network and draws content from a computer. Fortunately, most of the latest generation TVs have a built-in Wi-Fi module. If you do not have a Wi-Fi network, you can connect the TV in the old, proven way - via Ethernet. In household appliances, the RJ-45 port (also referred to as LAN, Ethernet) was practically not used before, and now many TV models have it. The main thing is that the TV supports the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard, which is no longer a rarity in our time. By the way, most Smart TV functions require an Internet connection, so one way or another, you should take care of it.

Wireless TV connection has become a reality. Sometimes it is not clear to which source it is connected.

Connecting mobile devices to the TV

Why is there a computer - now even a smartphone and tablet based on Android and iOS can be connected to the TV. True, only new and often not budget models. For example, the VIERA remote App allows you to use your smartphone and tablet as a remote control and content source for Panasonic TVs. And Samsung has developed a proprietary system for sharing content between Allshare devices. Thanks to it, Samsung smartphones and tablets also transmit video to TVs of their own brand and serve as remote controls. Philips has such a "chip" called MyRemote. In any case, you should install a special program on your smartphone or tablet.

No, it's not that big remote...it's a tablet

Of course, Apple could not ignore such an interesting direction. Although the company does not yet have its own TVs, but it does have a content store and various devices that can play it. And with the Apple TV media player, you can stream content from your iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac to your TV screen (any brand). Apple TV connects to the TV with an HDMI cable, and receives a signal from gadgets via Wi-Fi (using proprietary AirPlay technology). Since you can transfer not only videos, but also photos and music, the content that you have in iTunes will be available on the big screen. In addition, Apple TV allows you to use the popular online services YouTube, Vimeo and Flickr and bring the content you watch on your Mac offline. By the way, there are other media players that are designed to work with Windows and provide similar features. Moreover, they are compatible with services like Megogo and can even download content from the Web.

A universal standard has already been developed - MHL (Mobile High Definition Link). So far, the standard is in development, but some TVs and monitors already support it. In this case, using the appropriate cable, you can display the image from the gadget (which must also be compatible with MHL) on a large screen, almost the same as from a computer.

So, summing up, we predict that TVs will soon be able to display content from various devices: simply and without wires. In the meantime, the easiest and most affordable way for almost every way to connect a desktop PC and laptop to a TV is to connect them using an HDMI cable. By the way, the method described by us is also suitable for connecting a second monitor or projector.

When choosing a digital TV, it is absolutely not necessary to overpay for the Smart TV function or purchase a separate set-top box with this function if the house has a computer even with average performance. After all, there is a convenient and simple solution - to connect a computer to a TV.

Connecting a TV to a computer - maximum possibilities

By connecting a digital TV to a computer, it can be turned into an advanced media center based on the Windows operating system. Naturally, with all the ensuing benefits - the use of functional software video players, online video viewing, access to video hosting content, Internet TV, computer games on the big screen, playback of pictures of any format, etc.

Connecting a TV is possible even if the computer has a budget office video card. Any more or less modern model of a budget video card works without problems with two screens. Of course, when watching a video in Full HD, slight slowdowns are possible, but there will be no problems with regular video content. An ideal option for watching movies in Full HD is a multimedia video card in the computer assembly. This will not hit the pocket like a gaming video card, while its performance will be higher than an office video card.

How to connect digital TV to a computer or laptop? Let's look at this issue in detail below.

1. HDMI connection

LCD and Plasma TVs typically have multiple HDMI inputs and at least one computer input, either VGA or DVI. Functional models have all three input types.

HDMI is a modern interface, it can provide the best picture quality. HDMI connectivity is not limited to image transmission, this interface also includes audio transmission. Both video and audio of video content played on a computer can be output to a connected digital TV.

The presence of an HDMI output is now the standard for laptops. Rare modern laptop models may not have it. But with video cards of stationary computers, not everything is so simple. The presence of an HDMI port increases the cost of the video card. And it's rare that integrated GPUs have an HDMI output. For the sake of this interface for a computer, you need to specifically purchase an external video card.

HDMI-connecting a TV to a computer is, of course, the best option, but you can get by with connecting using standard computer ports VGA and DVI. Moreover, for an HDMI connection, you need, respectively, an HDMI cable. This is not supplied with every digital TV, but this is still, albeit small, nevertheless, additional expenses. An HDMI cable can be found in the box from a Samsung TV, but it is unlikely that such a cable can be found in addition to budget options. It will have to be purchased separately.

If one of the devices has only a VGA port, and the other has only a DVI port, the connection problem is solved in a budgetary way. Buy either an adapter or a VGA-DVI cable. DVI-HDMI adapters are more expensive, and there is no point in buying them. Such an adapter will provide image quality at the DVI interface level, and will not transmit sound.

In our case, you need to connect the TV to the computer via the HDMI interface. If you choose another connection interface - VGA or DVI - the only difference will be in connecting, respectively, a VGA or DVI cable. The connection setup steps in the TV menu and in Windows are the same.

The process of connecting an HDMI cable is simple: on the TV we find the HDMI input and connect one end of the cable to it, and connect the other end of the cable to the HDMI output of a computer or laptop.

2. HDMI input on TV

The HDMI port on a TV is usually located either on the back or on the side panel. In our case, the TV has an HDMI input on the back, next to the computer's VGA port.

Select any of the available HDMI ports.

3. HDMI output on computer

The standard for placing an HDMI port on laptops is the left side panel, next to the USB ports.

The HDMI port on the PC system unit is located on the back, on the video card output panel.

A common mistake when connecting a TV to a PC is to use the ports of an inactive, usually integrated, video card, while the active video card is an external, built-in separate board. This mistake is easy to make with VGA and DVI computer ports. With an HDMI port, the chance of incorrect connection will be less due to the rare presence of this input on integrated video cards. However, this point is worth considering.

4. Connecting to a computer in the TV settings

After you have established a cable connection to your computer, you need to set the correct signal source on your TV. To do this, we need a remote control from the TV, and on it is a button for displaying possible sources. On Samsung and other models created on the basis of components of the South Korean corporation, which include the remote control, the list of sources is called up by the button "Source".

We will see the list of sources right on the screen. Next, use the navigation buttons to select the desired interface - in our case, this is "HDMI 1" - and press the remote control button "Enter". If the TV was connected to a computer via a VGA cable, the source would have to be "PC".

If the cable is connected correctly, if the signal source is correctly selected in the TV menu, Windows will automatically see the device as a second screen on the computer. And it will automatically expand the desktop display to it in the case of a computer.

In the case of laptops, the new screen is usually duplicated.

The image may not initially be perfect. Individual moments are configured additionally.

5. Adjusting the picture in the TV menu

Some picture options for the selected source are configured in the TV firmware. In our case, for example, you can press the "Menu" button on the remote control, select the "Image" section ...

and set the desired parameters for screen brightness, tone, noise reduction, change the picture format if necessary.

Such a minimum set of settings should be in every digital device.

6. Adjusting the image using Windows

If a video driver is installed in Windows, the computer should be able to see any connected second screen, such as a digital TV. If there is no desktop image, you can try to solve the problem by instructing the system to detect connected screens.

In the Windows 10 version on the desktop, right-click and select "Display Options".

In the parameters window, click the "Detect" button.

If your TV is displaying the Windows desktop, you can apply some settings to your TV in the options window. The "Detect" button will help you determine which of the screens in the visual bar at the top is a TV. By selecting it, you can set the TV as the main screen, change the pre-installed (in the case of a computer) extension option to mirror the screen or display on only one of the screens. Access to permission settings will be obtained by clicking the link "More screen options".

From the drop-down list of standard resolutions, you need to select the most suitable for the TV. Next, click "Apply", respectively, to apply the selected permission. For the convenience of moving the mouse cursor between screens, their location is swapped by dragging on the visual panel.

To configure the second screen in versions of Windows 7 and 8.1, by right-clicking on the desktop, select "Screen resolution".

In the window that opens, to detect the second device, click the button "Find". The rest of the second screen settings are almost the same as those discussed for Windows 10.

7. Adjusting the image using the NVIDIA video card driver

In the list of standard resolutions of Windows settings, the optimal resolution for TV may not be. Higher resolutions can limit the visibility of the edges of the screen, while smaller resolutions can leave “mourning” stripes around the perimeter. A custom custom resolution can be set using the NVIDIA graphics driver. To do this, right-click on the desktop and start the driver service - NVIDIA Control Panel.

In chapter "Change Permission" from the two connected screens, select the TV and press the button "Settings" just below the proposed resolutions. Next click "Create custom permission".

In the window that appears, specify the optimal horizontal and vertical dimensions for the TV screen. Press the button "Test".

The tested resolution will be applied, and if it satisfies, we save it in the testing window. If not, respectively, click "No" and set other values.

Above, a convenient setting option was considered when the optimal TV screen resolution was previously set and its value is known. For the first time, it is better to set up a suitable resolution using another section of the NVIDIA Control Panel - "Adjusting the size and position of the desktop". Here you also need to select the TV as a custom screen in step #1. In step number 2, select the "Size" tab and set the active option to resize the desktop. We apply the changes.

The perimeter of the faces will appear on the screen, which can be changed with the width and height sliders. Having reached the optimal size, click "OK".

We save non-standard resolution.

In both cases, the custom resolution configured using the NVIDIA Control Panel will be available in the drop-down list of resolutions in the system display settings.

8. Adjusting the image using the Radeon graphics driver

Graphics Driver Service Radeon-Catalyst Control Center- may offer less functionality than NVIDIA Control Panel. However, some things are customizable. On the desktop, right-click and launch the Catalyst Control Center.

The Catalyst Control Center interface is not always bundled with Radeon drivers, as is the case with NVIDIA. As a rule, the Catalyst Control Center is installed when manually installing the video card driver from the installation disk or from the official website (http://support.amd.com/ru-ru/download).

For digital models, the Catalyst Control Center provides a separate section - "My Digital Panels". Here you can flexibly adjust the TV screen, in particular, use scaling if the system screen settings do not have the optimal resolution. In the "Scaling Settings" subsection, by dragging the slider, you can experiment with the image until you get the desired result. The result is fixed with the "Apply" button at the bottom.

9. Setting the sound from the TV speakers

If your PC is equipped with a good sound system, the advantage of the HDMI interface, such as sound transmission, is not necessary. Budget and average laptops with their wheezing, barely audible speakers are quite another matter. When HDMI-connecting a TV to a laptop, it is better, of course, to output sound to the speakers of the first one.

Unlike the picture, audio is not automatically output from the TV speakers when an HDMI cable is connected and the source is selected. The sound needs to be adjusted separately.

In versions of Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, right-click on the volume icon in the system tray. Select "Playback Devices".

In the window of available audio playback devices that appears, select your TV. Its name, as a rule, is displayed in the same way as when defining a screen. At the bottom, click the "Default" option.

All - the sound will be output to the speakers. In the same way, just by selecting the source audio playback device, the audio output when the TV is turned off is configured.

Have a great day!

Hello everyone, friends! How to connect a computer to a TV? You can find the answer to this question in my article below.

Television has become a part of life for many of us. We are used to enjoying movies, photos, playing games and even working on a large screen. Yes, a large computer monitor requires separate costs. It is not really needed if you have a large screen TV. To connect a computer to a TV, special skills are not required. All that is needed is to check them for the presence of the necessary inputs and ports, in order to carry out the plan without much effort and knowledge. So, in this article I will tell you in detail how to connect a computer to a TV, and what is required for this.

How to connect a computer to a TV? — PREPARATION FOR CONNECTION

First you need to know that you need a special cord to connect. There are several of their models.

  • VGA is the most common cable connector. Numerous monitor models are still connected through it, so there should definitely be a port for it on the computer. It is worth noting the fact that video cards of all kinds have the same output;

  • DVI is a newer cable model that has replaced the connector described above. Its average length reaches about 10 meters;

  • HDMI - almost everyone knows about this type of cable today. This is a modern model that allows you to transmit the highest quality image and sound. The average length of such a cord is 15 meters;

  • S-video - such cables are not so common today. These models can not boast of high picture quality. Although, if the average suits you, then you can use it;

  • RCA - many of you remember this type of connector. Usually, thanks to this cable, we connected a VCR to a TV or set-top boxes SEGA and DENDY. Today, almost no one uses such a model. It transmits very low quality, so we will not take it into account.

If you have a question about which cable to use for connection in order to get high quality picture and sound, then I will answer without hesitation - HDMI. This is a universal model that is used today in almost all television and computer devices.

CONNECTING STEPS

Now let's move on to the next point. If you have already decided on the choice of cable model, then the next step is to set up a computer or laptop. It all depends on what device you have.

COMPUTER SETTINGS

Let's take a closer look at this point, as many may have difficulties. All actions take place with the cable connected, both to the PC and to the TV.

  • Right-click on any empty spot on the desktop;
  • A window will appear in front of your eyes where you need to find the "Screen Resolution". Select this item;
  • If you are using the Windows XP operating system, then you need to go to "Properties" and click on "Settings";
  • Next, we need to transfer the image from the computer to the TV screen. To do this, select the item "Duplicate screens".

It is worth remembering that the resolution of the TV and monitor should be similar. If they are different, then the transmitted picture will be distorted, narrowed, or vice versa stretched.

HOW TO CONNECT YOUR COMPUTER AND TV

Everything here is quite simple and easy. You need to connect one end of the cable to the TV, and the opposite end to the video card connector. Do not confuse this input with the motherboard.

CONNECT VIA HDMI

If you have an HDMI cable, then the connection will be as follows. We also connect the cable on both sides to the devices. After that, on the TV, you need to switch the mode to AVI. It is he who provides a change in the display mode not from the antenna, but from an external source.

Now you just have to select the port to which the cord is connected.

CONNECT VIA DVI

If you decide to use the connection via a DVI cable, then remember that it only transmits a picture to the screen. The sound is provided by another cord and connector. In addition, if you do not have such an input on one of the devices, then you will need a special VGA-DVI adapter. In general, the connection procedure is the same as that of the previous representative.

CONNECT VIA S-VIDEO

If your TV is not equipped with the previous ports, then the S-VIDEO cable comes to the rescue.

There must be a port of this format on the back of the computer. If everything is so, then we connect through a connector called SCART.

In fact, the procedure for this connection has some nuances. You will need the following items:

  • SCART adapter - audio / video / s-video;
  • S-VIDEO cable;
  • Jack - 2 tulips - this cord is designed for a separate sound connection.

  • Combine adapter and cord;
  • We insert this adapter into the SCART port on the TV;
  • Tulips must be inserted so that they coincide with the positions R - right, L - left.

  • The mini-jack must be inserted into a special connector located on the computer's sound card.

Ultimately, we should go to the "Screen Resolution", where in the Settings we make all the necessary settings.

OTHER METHODS

In fact, there are still quite a few ways to connect. New models of adapters are regularly developed. However, not everyone will be able to afford them, as the price is high.

IS THE INPUT ANALOGUE OR DIGITAL?

The answer to this question is simple. The computer is a digital device. If you have a modern TV, then it is digital. Accordingly, the connection will be the same. If there are no such connectors on one of the devices, and there is no desire to bother with adapters, then you can connect with an analogue. But remember that the sound and images may not please you.

TV ON LAN

There is an option to connect via local network. You will need a crimped cord. So, in order to carry out the procedure, you need to connect the PC and TV to lan. Let's go through it step by step:

  • You need to download and upload an application called Home Media Server;
  • We copy the necessary videos to the application folder and launch;
  • Now you can watch whatever you want.

However, this method will help you enjoy only what you download from your PC.

ROUTER

There is another way to connect to the router. You don't need a special cable. Need:

  • In the settings, select the "Network" item;
  • Next, we are looking for wireless;

  • We find the desired access point and enter the password from it.

It is worth noting that the procedure for setting up Wi-Fi is the same. It will not be difficult for you to connect to the network.

DIRECTLY

It is worth noting that the direct connection is carried out in the same way as before. In the "Network" you only need to select the wired option.

CORRECTLY JOINING THE COMPUTER TO THE LG TV

There is a special service called LG Smart Share. Thanks to it, you can watch videos, listen to music and much more. To do this, you need a specialized router. This is a separate network point to which both your devices (PC and computer) are connected.

HOW TO CONNECT A COMPUTER TO LG TV?

We will consider this method using the well-known Windows Media application as an example. To connect you need:

  • Launch the player;
  • Next, go to the "Stream";
  • There we need to check the boxes next to two items: "Allow remote control ..." and "Automatically allow devices ...";

Now the user will be able to view any files located there in Smart Share.

NO SOUND ON TV VIA HDMI

A common problem is the lack of sound. This happens with different brands and models of TVs. Don't immediately panic. Now I will tell you what should be done so that it appears.

  • On the computer, right-click on the sound icon. It is shown as a column;
  • You will see a tab where you need to enter the "Playback Devices";
  • We leave the sound only for your TV, and everything else needs to be turned off;
  • Set TV to default mode.

Sometimes it happens that the TV is invisible in the tab. In this case, you should right-click the mouse on an empty area. The "Show Disabled Devices" mode will appear. It is in front of him that we check the box.

Conclusion

So you learned the answer to the question "How to connect a computer to a TV?" . So, in this article, I told you in detail about the connection methods, the types of cables and connectors, and the problems that arise when connecting. Everything, on the one hand, seems impossible, but it seems so at first glance. I hope I helped you solve the connection problem, and you are already enjoying watching your favorite movie on the big screen.

How to connect a computer to a TV?

Today, modern LCD and LED TVs have almost completely replaced television receivers with a cathode ray tube, or simply a kinescope. Modern televisions are distinguished by high picture and sound quality, but apart from this, LCD and LED televisions are great for use as a monitor.

Advantages and disadvantages of connecting a TV to a PC

  1. Their matrix allows you to comfortably work with any applications, watch movies from the Internet on a wide screen and play, view photos and social network content, as it does not create flicker and does not harm your eyesight.
  2. In addition, when acquiring an LCD TV as a computer monitor, it is quite profitable from an economic point of view. You can watch both TV channels and work on a PC without buying a separate monitor for it.
  3. A TV receiver connected to a PC can be used as a signal source for recording on-air broadcasts on a computer hard drive.

But this is where the advantages of using a modern TV as a monitor end, let's move on to the disadvantages, the main of which is the different pixel sizes: they are larger on the TV, and correspondingly smaller on the monitor. That is why the image quality from a PC will not be as saturated as it could be on a monitor. Besides:

  1. If the TV resolution is less than 1920 x 1080, the clarity of the image is significantly degraded and the angular fonts can be seen.
  2. Many budget LCD TVs have low matrix response. Any sufficiently dynamic content on such a device will not look very correct.
  3. For web surfing, a large-screen TV is also not a good choice. For a normal view, you will have to work behind such a device from a long distance.

However, many are interested in how to connect a computer to a TV and use it instead of a monitor for playing games and watching movies.

Video adapter requirements

The video card must be equipped with two connectors - this is the most important requirement for it. As a rule, most video adapters have 2 VGA connectors or a combination of VGA and DVI connectors, but more modern ones have a pair of high-speed HDMI digital interfaces. However, depending on the manufacturer and model of the video card, the combination of connectors may be different.

Let's take a closer look at connecting an external screen instead of a monitor, via a VGA cable, since all video cards and more than 90% of television receivers are equipped with this interface.

VGA connection and setup process

Connecting a computer to a TV begins with purchasing the necessary VGA-VGA cable from any computer hardware store. As for the length of the cable, it is better to take 1.5 distances from the required. In case of rearrangements of furniture, repairs, etc. you do not need to disconnect the PC from the TV and do not buy a new cable.

As a rule, connecting a TV to a computer via a VGA interface is not difficult even for an inexperienced user. If everything is in order with the equipment and cable, the TV as a monitor should work immediately.

Only the image is transmitted over the VGA cable. To connect audio, use an audio cable by connecting it to the output of the sound card and the TV receiver.

HDMI connection and setup process

This is the most suitable option, since the HDMI digital interface transmits not only video, but also sound, and therefore an additional audio cable is not needed.

Sound problems

Despite the fact that not only video, but also sound is transmitted via the HDMI interface, it often happens that the sound comes from the PC speakers, but is not transmitted to the TV. The most common reason is settings.

After this procedure, the sound will come from the TV receiver, and not from the PC speakers. In this simple way, you can always connect your PC to your TV. Good luck with your purchases and enjoy your viewing.

To do this, inspect the connectors available on the device. If you cannot determine the types of ports by eye, find their description in the documentation for your computer. Depending on the device model, you can see the connectors of the following varieties:

  • HDMI is a digital interface found on most modern computers. It transmits both audio and video, and therefore is optimally suited for outputting a multimedia signal to a TV.
  • DVI is another digital port widely used in the market. Transmits only video, no sound.
  • VGA is a popular analog connector. Like the previous port type, it only outputs video signal.

  • Mini DisplayPort , Thunderbolt 2 , USB‑C and Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) are digital interfaces found on Apple computers. All of them transmit video and sound. In addition, the Mac can be equipped with an ordinary HDMI connector.

There are other types of connectors. But we have listed the most popular ones. Your device is probably equipped with one or more of them.

2. Determine which connectors for signal reception are on the TV

Look at the TV ports. Most modern models have HDMI and VGA connectors. Older ones are equipped with RCA format ports, the plugs for which are called tulips:

3. Select a cable according to the available connectors

If you have an HDMI TV

If both the TV and the computer have an HDMI connector, then everything is elementary: you can connect devices using an HDMI cable. This option will be optimal.

To connect a computer that does not have an HDMI port to an HDMI TV, you will also need a special signal converter along with an HDMI cable. Which one depends on the connector available on the computer. These can be DVI → HDMI, VGA → HDMI or other adapters to HDMI.

In addition to the HDMI cable, you can often connect an additional audio cable to such converters, the other end of which is inserted into the computer. This allows you to transmit audio bypassing the limitations of DVI and VGA. An audio cable is often sold with a converter.

To connect to a Mac HDMI TV with a Thunderbolt 2 or Mini DisplayPort connector, you will need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter along with an HDMI cable. For it to transmit sound, ask the store for such an adapter with audio support.

If you have a VGA TV

For a VGA TV, the procedure will be similar. Only you will need an HDMI → VGA, DVI → VGA or other converter, depending on the computer port. The main thing is that it converts the signal to VGA.

If you have an RCA TV

If you have a very old TV model with tulips at your disposal, then converters like HDMI → RCA, VGA → RCA and others that output an RCA signal are suitable.

In order not to make a mistake when buying a cable or converter, you can tell the seller the types of connectors on your TV and computer: he will select the appropriate option for you or check your choice for compatibility.

4. Connect devices via cable

Turn off your computer and TV beforehand for safety reasons. Next, connect the devices using a cable (and, if necessary, a converter). Only then turn on the devices. If the TV does not automatically detect the computer as the signal source, then do it yourself in the TV settings.

5. Adjust the picture on the TV using a computer

If the image is blurry, open the system settings on your computer and find the section responsible for the monitor. Here you can set the resolution that matches your TV and, if necessary, change the video display mode.

How to connect a computer to a TV via Wi-Fi

Modern smart TVs can be connected to computers wirelessly via a local Wi-Fi network. Technologies like DLNA and Wi-Fi Direct allow you to broadcast video, music and other content to a TV screen or completely duplicate the image from a computer on a TV, turning the latter into a wireless monitor. And in the case of Wi-Fi Direct, you don’t even need a router for this.

For example, on LG devices for such functions there is a service. And Samsung TVs offer similar features as part of the AllShare service.

Wireless connection settings may vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the TV. Some devices establish a connection in a semi-automatic mode. Others require additional software to be installed on the connected computer.

Therefore, it is difficult to formulate a universal instruction that will suit all users. If you want to connect your TV to a computer via Wi-Fi, you will find the necessary information in the paper manual or on the official website of the manufacturer along with the software needed for this.
