How to move files from one folder to another? Copying files and folders.

Every computer owner has at least once been faced with the need to move a file to a folder or extract a folder from an archive. Sometimes you forget the password you set a long time ago, and it seems that your files are lost forever. Or even a folder or trash can suddenly disappear from the desktop or be deleted by mistake. But all this can be easily fixed!

How to move a file to a folder? It's very easy to do. First, you need to find the file that needs to be moved in Documents. Then, in a new window, open the folder into which the file will be moved. Now you need to left-click on the file and, without releasing the button, drag it into the folder window. Point the file image next to the cursor at the folder and release the button.

Sometimes you have to change your profile folder or add a new user. Let's see how to change the user folder. First, go to the Start menu and open Control Panel. Next, you need to find the “User Accounts” item and there you can change any parameters of the user folder.

Let's say a password was set on a folder, then the system crashed, and now the folder denies access. In this case, it will be useful to know how to hack the folder. When you turn on your computer, you must select "Safe Mode" to boot. Next, right-click on the desired folder, open its properties and change access and security settings, indicating yourself as the owner of the folder. If this does not solve the problem, you can find special programs on the Internet that will help you open the locked folder.

Often, for the convenience of storing and moving materials, special archiver programs are used that help reduce the weight of files. The question arises: how to extract a folder from the archive? First you need to open the archive - double-click on it with the left mouse button. When the archive window opens, the desired folder will appear in the list of files. When you right-click on it, the menu that appears will display the option “extract to the specified folder.” All that remains is to choose where to extract the desired folder - after the extraction process it will be in the specified location.

Finally, we’ll tell you how to restore a folder; the recycle bin may have been mistakenly deleted from the desktop. To restore, you need to right-click on the desktop, select “personalization”, and then, in the window that appears, “change desktop icons”. In the parameters you need to check the box next to the cart. It will appear on your desktop again!

There is nothing complicated in working with a computer at the user level, and all problems that arise can be easily and quickly resolved. The main thing is not to get lost and not to panic. If difficulties arise that are not discussed in this article, you can always find useful information on the Internet.

There are several ways to move files and folders on your computer. But we will consider a universal one - one that can transfer information from a CD or DVD disk, write data to a flash drive and from a flash drive. You can also use it to copy photos or videos from a camera (video camera), from a mobile phone and from other devices connected to a computer.

Moving files and folders from one computer location to another is called copying. This is a process in which we create an exact copy of the data and send it to the desired location (a folder, a flash drive, etc.)

How to move a file or folder

Right-click on the file or folder you want to move to another location. In the list that opens, click on the “Copy” item.

After this, you need to open on your computer the location where you want to transfer the file or folder. This could be Local drive D, the Documents folder or any other folder, the Desktop, or even a flash drive.

Then right-click on an empty space (not on some icon, but next to it) and select “Paste” from the list.

That's all. Now this file or folder is in two places - both in the place where we got it from and where we moved it.

That is, if you look at it, it turns out the following: You opened the place from which you want to take the file (for example, you opened a flash drive), right-clicked on the desired file, selected “Copy” from the list, then opened the place where you want to transfer this file (for example, open Documents), right-click on an empty one and select “Paste”. In general, nothing complicated.

Copying multiple files (folders)

In order to copy several files (folders), you must first select them. Here's how it's done:

Place the arrow (cursor) on the empty space next to the files and folders you want to copy.

Press the left mouse button and, without releasing it, draw a rectangle around the required files and folders. When they become colored, it will mean that the files and folders are highlighted. Release the left mouse button.

Now let's copy them:

Right-click on any selected icon (file, folder). A list will open from which you need to select “Copy”.

Then open the location on your computer where you want to place these files and folders. This could be Local Drive D, Documents, a flash drive, or some kind of folder.

And finally, right-click on an empty space (white field) and select “Paste” from the list that appears.

All! Files and folders have been moved to a new location. That is, they are now in two places: both where they were originally, and in a new place - where you copied them.

Don't be alarmed, everything is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. You just need to practice a little. Good luck!

Copy and paste operations are the most commonly used functions of file managers of any operating system. Each OS provides the user with the ability to do this in several ways, using the mouse, keyboard, or a combination of both. The sequence of actions for such operations with the contents of an entire folder is not very different from the actions when transferring one individual file.

Instructions

  • Navigate to the folder whose files you want to transfer. If it is located on the desktop, then simply double-click on its icon, and if not, then do the same with the “My Computer” shortcut and go through the folder tree in the window of the launched file manager to the desired directory.
  • Select all files in the folder. To do this, click any of them, and then press the key combination Ctrl + A (Latin letter). The same can be done by opening the “Arrange” drop-down list above the list of folders and selecting the “Select all” line in it.
  • If you need to place duplicate files in another folder, leaving the contents of the original folder in the same place, then copy everything selected - press the Ctrl + C key combination. And if you want to move all objects, leaving the original directory empty, then use the cut operation - press the Ctrl key combination + X. Both of these commands can also be selected in the context menu, called up by right-clicking on the selected area in the Explorer window.
  • Go to the directory where you want to place everything you copied or cut. Click the field in the right pane of Explorer and press Ctrl + V - this key combination corresponds to the paste operation. You can do the same using the corresponding line in the context menu. This completes the procedure for transferring files from one folder to another.
  • Instead of a combination of cut and paste operations, you can use a drag-and-drop mechanism - simply move the previously selected files using the left mouse button to the icon of the desired folder. If the source and destination folders are located too far apart in the directory hierarchy, you can open each of them in a separate window and use any of the described mechanisms (drag and drop or copy and paste).
  • Photos and videos from vacation, music and films, installation files for programs and many more files and documents are stored on the modern user’s computer. And, although not often, a situation still arises when you want to send a friend a video from your last trip, an installation file for some program, or, say, you need to download a file from your home computer to your work one. In this article I will tell you several ways to help you transfer a file from computer to computer.

    Copying files

To do this, we need a flash drive with sufficient memory capacity, a CD or DVD. If the files take up a lot of space, you can use an external hard drive. We insert the flash drive into the USB connector and copy the data; connect the external hard drive in the same way. We simply burn files onto a CD or DVD; this may require installing a special program for burning discs. Then we simply give the recorded device to a friend.

    Using a network cable

    Using file hosting services

This can also help you if your friends or relatives live in another city, and there is no way to directly connect two computers or transfer a flash drive. Today there are many file hosting services: Cloud Mail.ru, Dropbox, Yandex Disk, Google Drive. The essence is, in principle, the same for everyone. Previously, I already wrote an article Dropbox - what kind of program it is and how to set up Dropbox, you can read them simply by following the links. Install the selected program on both computers. Then you add the required file to the local cloud storage folder, which is located on your computer, after which automatic synchronization with the cloud occurs. Next, another user launches a file sharing service from his computer and logs in using the same mailbox and password as you. Synchronization is performed and a local folder with downloaded files is also created on his computer. Now he can view them, copy or even add something of his own to the folder. If you do not want to disclose your login and password, you can create a link to the file in your file hosting service and send it to a friend. In this case, he will be able to watch or download it.

You can read the article on how to set up remote access via TeamViewer by following the link. This method will also be very helpful if at work you need a file that is stored on your home computer. With TeamViewer you can easily download it. A small clarification - in this case, the home computer must be turned on. Also, through TeamViewer, when you create a connection, you can download and view files from another computer.

That's probably all. We figured out how to transfer a file from computer to computer. Choose the method that suits you and I’m sure everything will work out.

You can move and copy files and folders in Windows XP in several ways: using window menu and drop-down menu commands, using certain keyboard shortcuts, and using the drag-and-drop method. In addition, Windows XP allows you to use the so-called task mechanism for moving and copying. More details about this later in this article.

    • To move any files or folders, you must first find and select them. Once you have selected them, do the following. To move selected objects, select the command from the window menu Edit>Cut Cut.
    • To copy selected objects, select the command from the window menu Edit>Copy. You can also right-click on the selected objects and select the command from the menu that opens Copy.
    • Now you need to go to the folder in which you want to paste the moved or copied files/folders and select the command Edit>Paste. You can also right-click on a window field free of icons and select the command from the menu that opens Insert.

Then the copying process will begin, which will be clearly shown on the screen. To abort copying or moving, you can click the button Cancel, however, it is not advisable to do this, since there is a risk of losing the copied data.

You can move and copy files and folders using special keyboard shortcuts, which will save you a lot of time. Just memorize these combinations, and over time you will press them automatically.

    1. Find and select the files or folders you want to copy and transfer.
    2. To move selected objects, press the keyboard shortcut , and to copy - a key combination .
    3. Now go to the folder where you want to paste the copied or moved files/folders and press the key combination .

If two windows are open on the screen at once, you can move or copy files or folders using the drag-and-drop method. It's very easy to do.

    1. Position the windows so that the contents of both windows are clearly visible.
    2. Select the required files or folders in one window (using one of the methods described above) and, while holding the left mouse button pressed, drag the files or folders to another window. This will move the files or folders to another window.
    3. To use drag-and-drop to copy rather than move files or folders, you must press the button simultaneously with the left mouse button . In this case, a plus icon will be displayed next to the mouse pointer, indicating that the data is being copied and not moved.

However, the drag-and-drop method has its own characteristics that it is advisable to study before using it.

    • If you drag a file or folder within the same hard drive partition (for example, from a folder D:/sea to a folder D: /sea/quiet), then the dragged object will be moved rather than copied.
    • In turn, when dragging a file or folder from one partition of the hard drive to another (for example, from a folder D:/sea to a folder C:/deep), then the object will be copied rather than moved.
    • If you try to drag any Windows system object (for example, a folder Control Panel), a warning message will appear on the screen, and a shortcut to the dragged object will be created at the new location. All system objects are not files, so they cannot be physically copied or moved. All you can do is move not the object itself, but a shortcut to it, with which you can quickly access this object. The shortcut can be placed, for example, on the Windows desktop.

However, there are no rules without exceptions. If you want the file to be copied when you drag, regardless of any rules or restrictions, hold down the key while dragging . In turn, to move files or folders even from one hard drive partition to another, hold down the key . Finally, to create a shortcut to a file or folder using drag-and-drop, hold down the .

As mentioned earlier, you can move files and folders using a special task mechanism. This is how it is done.

    1. Find and select files or folders to move.
    2. In field Tasks for files and folders located in the left area of the window, click on the link Move file or Move folder. If multiple files or folders are selected, click the link Move selected objects.
    3. In the window that appears select a new location for the file or folder, and then click the button Move. In the window you can create a new folder by clicking the button Create a folder and entering the folder name.

You can copy files or folders in the same way. At the same time, in the field Tasks for files and folders you need to click on the link Copy file, Copy folder or Copy selected objects. Please indicate in the window Copying elements where the selected objects should be copied, then click on the button Copy.
