Parameter " permission"For graphic file is closely related to its quality, it indicates how many image elements, information units, per unit of length or area of a given picture. The more there are, the sharper the image will be. In order to correctly select the optimal ratio of the resolution and the physical size of the image to be printed, you need to change permission file... A low value will result in a mosaic picture, and a high value will lead to excessive technological stress.

In order to match the physical size of the image with the size of the sheet of paper on which it will be output, connect the required printing device and in the "File" menu select "Print with preview", if necessary, adjust the size of the picture.

To display the image on the monitor screen, a resolution of 72 dpi is sufficient, to obtain a high-quality print on a printer or plotter - 150-200 dpi. If the picture will be displayed on a photo-exposing device, then the required resolution is 200-300 dpi.

In the Windows operating system, each file type has its own extension... In some distributions, the display of extensions is disabled by default, which is not liked by all users. Enabling the display of extensions significantly improves the usability of your computer.

Instructions

The presence of extensions allows the user to judge the purpose of this or that. Executable files can have extension".Exe", ".com" or ".bat", text - ".txt", ".rtf" or ".doc", photos - ".jpg" or "jpeg", pictures - ".bmp", Internet files - ".htm", ".html", ".mht", media files - ".mov", ".avi", ".mpeg", etc. etc. The lack of display of extensions in many cases interferes with normal work with file mi - for example, when renaming them, so users usually try to enable this option.

To enable the display of extensions in Windows XP, open any drive or folder. Select the "Tools" tab from the menu, then "Folder Options" in it. A window will open, in it go to the "View" tab. Find the "Advanced Options" section where you will see a list of advanced options. Find the line "extensions for registered file types" (it is at the very bottom of the folder "Folders and files") and uncheck it. Click OK. Problem solved, showing extensions enabled.

In the Windows 7 operating system, to enable the display of extensions, open the "Control Panel", find the "Folder Options" section. In it, uncheck the "Hide extensions for registered file types" line. Click "OK", showing extensions is enabled.

Some users are faced with a situation where the display of extensions suddenly "by itself". Such a situation most likely indicates that the computer has been infected by a Trojan or virus program. In this case, it may not be possible to enable the display of extensions - the corresponding menu line in the additional parameters window will be absent, it is hidden by the Trojan program. If you do not find the line "Hide extensions for registered file types", urgently update the anti-virus database and scan your computer for malicious software.

Very often, personal computer users are faced with the problem of reading discs produced in certain regions the world. This is due to the conditional division of countries into zones - the content of a disc produced, for example, in Japan, is not intended for DVD players regionally assigned to the United States. This problem can be solved by changing the settings of the DVD-disc player or flashing it.

You will need

  • - Any DVD and DVD Region software.

Instructions

Open "My Computer", right click on the DVD drive. A window with several tabs will open on your screen. Examine their contents, select the second tab - "Drive Region".

From the list that opens, select the location that matches the zone of the country where the disc is made. Be careful, the number of attempts is limited to 5 changes of the regions where the drive is located.

Apply changes, restart your computer.

If you want to view the contents of discs without changing the region of the drive, then use third-party software, for example, the DVD Region utility, which not only allows you to watch DVDs of any manufacturer countries on your computer, but also performs the function of copying them. Download it from the official website of the manufacturer, complete the installation according to the instructions of the installation wizard, familiarize yourself with the program interface and use it during the entire trial period and even more if you decide to purchase a license.

Also use a convenient program for viewing the contents of discs of different regions Any DVD. It does not require any additional configuration settings, you just need to install and run it to solve the DVD playback problem. This program is much easier to use than the previous one, and has won recognition among personal computer users.

If you are asked to reflash the drive, do not agree. This is a rather long and laborious procedure, the result of which will be similar to the previous action with the only difference in time. However, if you decide to do this, entrust the operation to the professionals of the service centers.

Setting a file association makes life much easier for a PC user by allowing, by default, to open files of a certain type in the program that is best suited for this. If the file association is set incorrectly for some reason, you can change it.

You will need

  • - a computer with Windows XP installed.

Instructions

The easiest way to change the file association with an application is to select the desired program through the file properties window. In order to do this, open in the explorer the file of the type, the association of which with a specific program you want to change.

Click on the "Change" button in the "General" tab. From the list of programs that opens, select the one in which, from your point of view, files of this type should be opened by default. If possible, select an application from the list of recommended ones. Press the OK button in the window with the list of programs and the Apply button in the file properties window.

You can change file associations by opening the file using the "Open With" option. In order to use this feature, call the context menu by clicking on the file icon. In the menu that opens, move the cursor over the "Open with" item and click on the "Select program" option.

Select the program with which you are going to associate this file type. Check the box "Use it for all files of this type." Click the OK button.

The file extension is used to define a system of data parameters that can be read by a particular program. The replacement will affect the course of further operations with the file, so this procedure should be performed only when necessary.

Instructions

Open the "Control Panel" from the "Start" menu. Select "Folder Options". In the window that opens on the screen, go to the appearance settings tab. Scroll the list of positions to the very end.

Uncheck Hide Extensions for Registered File Types. Apply the changes, close the window by clicking the "OK" button. Reboot the system if required. After that, the names of all files on the computer will also contain the extension, so in the future, be careful when renaming them so as not to accidentally change the parameters.

Find the file on your computer whose resolution you want to change. Right-click on it, select the "Rename" menu item.

Erase all characters that follow the period from the file name. Put the extension you want and press Enter. The system will display a warning that changing the file extension may affect further work with it, click OK. If a program for reading data of a new format was installed on your computer, the icon will change to the corresponding application. If you enter the extension name incorrectly, then the file will appear as unregistered.

If you need not just to change the file extension, but to convert it, then download and install any programs convenient for you that change the data parameters. For example, if you need to convert a .docx file to .txt, open it with Microsoft Office Word and select Save.

In the drop-down menu at the bottom put the txt extension and the system will perform the necessary transformations. There are also various special conversion programs specially designed for certain types of files.

note

Keep in mind that when you change the file extension, the icon changes according to the program for opening it.

Useful advice

Be careful when specifying a new extension, because if you make even the slightest mistake, the file may not be read by the program.

The file name consists of the full path to it on the hard drive, personal name and extension, usually indicated after the dot sign. If you have somehow removed the extension, then the operating system cannot automatically recognize the type of document and run it for execution in the corresponding program. The first step is to find out what type of file it belongs to.

You will need

  • - computer;
  • - TrID, FileInfo, File Analyzer programs;
  • - the Internet.

Instructions

Download and install one of the TrID file analysis programs, FileInfo, File Analyzer and others. You can find it on the software website softodrom.ru or soft.ru. Use the program's features to find out the file type. If you are using TrID, it will display information about the possible file type as a percentage.

View the detailed binary data content in normal. At the beginning is the file signature - a special set of characters with information about the document. For example, for a RAR archive, the signature contains Rar characters. You can find out in detail the correspondence of signatures to file types via the Internet. You can also find out the extension of the document using the standard tools of the operating system. To do this, right-click on the file and select "Properties". A window will appear in front of you, in which all the relevant information will be presented.

Use -file recognition services. It is possible to check their type directly on the Internet with the same TrID program. Having found out the file type, add its full extension, simply changing the name of a specific document. Click on the file with the right mouse button and select "Rename" from the menu. Enter the extension without forgetting the dot sign.

Don't just delete it. You will easily forget the type of document, and the operating system will not automatically recognize the data and will not select the program to run. Take a close look at the extension of each file that is on your personal computer. In general, we can say that it is not so difficult to return the extension to any document, the main thing is to have the appropriate software.

Typically editing an extension file should reflect the change in the recording format of the information it contains. And such intervention in the file structure is most often carried out using specialized applications that change extension... But the cases when the user has to fix the extension on his own are still not so rare.

Instructions

The easiest way to change the file extension is to use a program specifically designed for working with files. There are many ways to open it in Windows OS - for example, right-click the "Start" button and in the pop-up list of commands select the line "open explorer".

In the left column of the file manager interface, select the disk where the rename object is located, and then, sequentially expanding the folders in the same left column, go to the directory containing the file.

If the extension of the desired object is not displayed in the file manager, then open the "Organize" drop-down list above the left column of Explorer and select the "Folder and search options" line. If your OS version does not have this list, then open the "Tools" section in the menu and select the "Folder Options" item. In both cases, the same window will open, in which you need a list of parameters on the "View" tab - find the line "Hide extensions for registered file types" in it. Uncheck this line and click OK.

Right-clicking the required file, select the "rename" command, go to the end of the name (press the End button) and correct the extension. Pressing the Enter key will commit the changed file name.

The same operation can be done on the command line, even if the display of the file extension is disabled in the Windows settings. The command line simulator window is invoked through the program launch dialog - press the Win and R keys simultaneously to open this dialog. Then type cmd, press Enter and a command prompt terminal will open.

Use the rename command or its shorthand ren to rename. This command requires the full path and name of the edited object, as well as the name of the file with the new extension (for the second parameter, the full path is not required). For example, if a file named someFile.doc is placed in the text folder of the root directory of drive F, then to change its extension from doc to txt, enter the following command: ren F: extsomeFile.doc someFile.txt and press the Enter key.

A type file is an internal data layout that differs from file to file. For example, for video files, the extension avi is one type, mkv is another, and mov is a third. Each of these standards has certain properties and characteristics. It so happens that you need to play the recording on some device that supports only avi-video. In this case, you need to convert the file from one type to another using a special program.

Instructions

Download a utility for converting video files, such as Any Video Converter. It is a free and handy tool for working with a very large list of video standards and types. Alternatively, you can use Total Video Converter or Format Factory. These programs can also change the video file type to avi.

Follow the link to the AVC developer site - http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ or to any software portal on the Internet, for example www.softportal.ru or www.softodrom.ru, if you prefer another program. Click the Download or Download button and download the installation file.

Install data conversion software. To do this, find the installation file that you downloaded in the downloads folder of your browser. This is usually the My Documents Downloads folder, but other options are possible. Double-click the program installation and answer the wizard's questions. When it's over, you will have a shortcut on your desktop to launch the program.

Open Any Video Converter. Double click on the shortcut with the left mouse button or locate the folder in the Start menu, All Programs submenu. Click the "Add Video" button located in the upper left part of the window. Select the file you want to change. The video title and its parameters will appear in the main part of the window.

Select the line "Custom AVI" from the drop-down menu on the right side of the program, right above the video viewing window. At the bottom, under the viewing area, select encoding options. To do this, scroll through the list of possible settings, left-click on the desired line and select the appropriate option. For example, we recommend that you set the Video Resolution to Original so that the aspect ratio of the image is not changed. Also set the Frame Rate to AUTO.

The file retains a mention of this program. To change the summary, you need the ExifCleaner program. Find it on the Internet, download, open the image to be processed in it. Select the line with it, data about the photo will appear on the right side of the program window. Click on the Clean Setup button to mark the lines to be deleted. Then click Quick Clean - all selected data will be deleted.

If you need to not just delete, but replace photo data, use the ASDSee program. It has rich capabilities for working with images, and can change data from the summary of the file. You can download the 30-day version of the program: http://www.softportal.com/software-51-acdsee.html.

The Quick EXIF Editor is very good at editing summary image files. Its only drawback is its awkward interface. Download and install the program, run it. A small window will appear in front of you. Click the Open button and select the file you want. A drop-down list in the very center of the program will display the metadata.

2. Displaying file extensions can help you protect your computer from viruses. If you want to download an archive or a text document from the Internet, and a file with the .exe extension, denoting a program, has been downloaded to your computer, it is better to refuse to run this file, usually in this way cybercriminals force gullible users to install unnecessary programs and infect the computer with viruses.

Using standard Windows tools, you can change only some of the properties of files, for example, allow editing and deletion. To change the creation date, you have to use third-party programs or non-standard Windows tricks.

How to hide a file

Using standard Windows tools, you can hide the file you have created from viewing and prohibit its editing. To do this, right-click on its icon, select the "Properties" command, and in the "General" tab of the properties window, check the "Read-only" and "Hidden" attributes. Then go to the "Tools" menu and check the "Folder Options" item. In the "View" tab, find the item "Hidden folders and files" in the list of additional options and set it to "Do not show". Click OK to confirm. To restore the file's visibility, uncheck the Hidden attribute.

How to change file properties

You can change only some of the data in the file properties. If you have Windows XP, in the Properties window go to the Summary tab and click Advanced. Click in the "Value" section next to the property you want to change. If editing is allowed, an empty box appears with a frame around it.

To change the properties of a file in Windows 7 in the properties window go to the "Details" tab and proceed as described above.

How to change the creation date of a file

To find out the date the file was created, right-click on its icon and select the "Properties" command. The General tab displays basic information about the file, including the creation date. You will not be able to change this parameter using standard Windows tools, but you can use non-standard techniques. Double click on the clock in the tray (lower right corner of the screen) and set the date and time to which you want to change the real data of the file.

Open the file with a suitable editor (Word is suitable for text files, Paint or Photoshop for graphic files) and save it under your own name. Now the file properties will reflect the creation date you need.

You can use third-party programs to change file attributes, such as the Total Commander file manager. Launch TC and find the file you want to change in File Explorer.

In the "Files" menu, click the "Change Attributes" item and in the new window, check the box next to the "Change Date / Time" item. Then check the box next to "Use plugins". The "Plugin" field should be tc. In the "Property" field, open the drop-down list and select the "Creation date" item. In the "Value" field, enter the desired date and click OK.

For the likelihood of the adjustment, click "Add Attribute" and select "Modification Date" in the list of properties. Enter a date later than the creation date.

In the same window, you can prohibit editing the file and make it hidden. To do this, check the boxes "Read only" and "Hidden".

The need to change the file extension occurs when the wrong format name was mistakenly assigned to it initially or during saving. In addition, there are cases where items with different extensions are essentially the same format type (for example, RAR and CBR). And in order to open them in a specific program, you can simply change it. Let's see how to complete the specified task in Windows 7.

It is important to understand that simply changing the extension does not change the type or structure of the file. For example, if you change the filename extension from doc to xls in a document, it will not automatically become an Excel table. To do this, you need to carry out the conversion procedure. In this article, we will consider various ways to change the format name. This can be done both using the built-in Windows tools and using third-party software.

Method 1: Total Commander

First of all, let's consider an example of changing the name of the object format using third-party applications. Almost any file manager can handle this task. The most popular of these is undoubtedly.

Using Total Commander, you can perform batch renaming.

  1. First of all, you should select those elements that you want to rename. If you need to rename all the files in this directory, then we stand on any of them and use the combination Ctrl + A or Ctrl + Num +... Also, you can go to the menu by item "Selection" and select from the list "Select all".

If you need to change the name of the file type for all objects with a specific extension in this folder, then in this case, after selecting the item, go through the menu items "Selection" and "Select files / folders by extension" or apply Alt + Num +.

If you need to rename only a part of files with a certain extension, then in this case, first sort the contents of the directory by type. This will make it more convenient to search for the desired objects. To do this, click the name of the field "A type"... Then, holding down the key Ctrl, left-click ( Paintwork) by the names of the elements for which you want to change the extension.

If the objects are arranged in order, then click Paintwork on the first of them, and then, holding Shift, according to the latter. This will select the entire group of elements between these two objects.

Whichever selection option you choose, the selected objects will be marked in red.

  2. After that, you need to call the tool for group renaming. This can also be done in several ways. You can click on the icon "Batch renaming" on the toolbar or apply Ctrl + M(for English versions Ctrl + T).

Also the user can click "File", and then select from the list "Batch renaming".

  3. The tool window starts "Batch renaming".
  4. In field "Extension" just enter the name you want to see for the selected objects. In field "New name" in the lower part of the window, the options for the names of the elements in the renamed form will immediately be displayed. To apply the change to the specified files, click "Run".
  5. After that, you can close the window for group name change. Through the Total Commander interface in the field "A type" you can see that those elements that were previously selected have the extension changed to the one specified by the user.
  6. If you find out that you made a mistake during the renaming or for some other reason wanted to cancel it, then this is also quite easy to do. First of all, select the files with the changed name in any of the ways mentioned above. After that, move to the window "Batch renaming"... In it, click "Rollback".
  7. A window will open asking if the user really wants to cancel. Click "Yes".
  8. As you can see, the rollback was successful.

Method 2: Bulk Rename Utility

In addition, there are special programs designed for the mass renaming of objects, which are also effective in Windows 7. One of the most famous of these software products is the Bulk Rename Utility.

The main disadvantage of this method is that the Bulk Rename Utility application is not Russified, which creates certain inconveniences for the Russian-speaking user.

Method 3: using "File Explorer"

The most popular way to change filename extension is to use Windows Explorer. But the difficulty is that in Windows 7, by default, the extensions in the "Explorer" are hidden. Therefore, first of all, you need to activate their display by going to the "Folder Options".

  1. Go to "Explorer" to any folder. Click "Arrange"... Next in the list, select Folder and Search Options.
  2. The "Folder options" window opens. Move to section "View"... Uncheck the box "Hide extensions"... Push Apply and "OK".
  3. Now the names of the formats in the "Explorer" will be displayed.
  4. Then go in the "Explorer" to the object, the name of the format for which you want to change. Click on it PKM... Choose from the menu "Rename".
  5. If you do not want to open the menu, then after selecting the item, you can simply press the key F2.
  6. The file name becomes active and available for editing. Change the last three or four letters after the dot in the name of the object to the name of the format that you want to apply. The rest of his name does not need to be changed unnecessarily. After performing this manipulation, press Enter.
  7. A miniature window opens, informing that after changing the extension, the object may become inaccessible. If the user consciously performs actions, then he must confirm them by clicking "Yes" after the question "Do you want to change?".
  8. Thus, the format name was changed.
  9. Now, if there is such a need, the user can again move to the "Folder Options" and remove the display of extensions in "Explorer" in the section "View" by checking the box next to "Hide extensions"... Now you should click Apply and "OK".

Method 4: "Command line"

You can also change the filename extension using the Command Line interface.

But, of course, using the "Command Line" to change the filename extension of only one file is not rational. It is much easier to carry out this procedure through the "Explorer". It's another matter if you need to change the format name for a whole group of elements. In this case, renaming through "Explorer" will take a lot of time, since this tool does not provide for performing an operation simultaneously with an entire group, but the "Command Line" is suitable for solving this problem.

Using the "Command Line", you can solve more complex problems when changing the extension of items located in the same folder. For example, if you need to rename not all files with a certain extension, but only those of them that have a certain number of characters in their name, you can use the "?" Sign instead of each character. That is, if the "*" sign denotes any number of characters, then the "?" implies only one of them.

As you can see, there are several options for changing extensions in Windows 7. Of course, if you need to rename one or two objects, the easiest way to do this is through the "Explorer" interface. But, if you need to change the format names for many files at once, then in order to save time and effort, you will have to either install third-party software or use the capabilities provided by the Windows Command Line interface.

Imagine:

  • file is in front of you. By double-clicking, Windows prompts you to select the program with which to open it. And who knows what kind of file it is, what extension it has and what program can open it
  • Dangerous situation. The file greetings.jpg came to you by mail. You decide it's a picture and you open it. And the true extension, as it turns out, was hidden from you - the file was called greetings.jpg.exe and was virus!
  • The file came by mail again. Exactly the executable file with the extension exe that you are waiting for. But the mailer for security purposes (as in the previous paragraph) renamed the file, adding the safe extension to it. You are trying to rename a file, but you are not offered the option to change the extension. How to run the file is unclear.
  • you have two files on your desktop and look exactly the same. Both the names are the same, and the pictures are the same. And one of them is doc and the other is rtf. It's time to get confused.

In these cases, you just need enable display

Or a situation like this:

  • you downloaded the archive from the Internet, but the browser for some reason saved it with htm resolution (web page resolution). Naturally, you will not be able to unpack such an archive.

You need change file extension to the correct one.

What to do in this case?

  1. Specify the display of extensions in the Windows settings.
  2. Use a file manager.

You can change the formats (extensions) of some files by simply renaming them.

However, Windows may not display the file extension, including for security reasons, so that the user does not inadvertently rename the file incorrectly. Those. in your explorer, the files are displayed like this:

To change the file extension you need enable display of file extensions in Windows.

1.How to set the display of file extensions in Windows settings

We go to the menu: " Start "-" Control Panel ".

There are two options here:

a) you have included the classic style

In the case of an active classic style, immediately select "Folder Options".

Then we select the item "Designs and themes".

And in the next step, we also select "Folder Options".

In the properties, on the "View" tab, we find the item "Hide extensions for registered file types" and uncheck the box next to this item. Click "OK".

You can also open the display of file extensions via Windows explorer(double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop or the keyboard shortcut Win + E). Go to the folder where the file is located, the extension of which needs to be changed. In the Explorer menu Service select item Folder properties. V Windows 7 there may not be a menu; in this case, press the Alt key in the Explorer window, and it will appear. Menu item equivalent to Folder properties in Windows 7 it is called Folders settings .

(note: in Vista, the main menu item is called "organize", and also "folder properties" can be found in the control panel (start - control panel))
On the "View" tab, uncheck the box next to the "Hide extensions for registered file types" option and click the "OK" button.

Now you can see that the file names have changed, and the names of their extensions appeared on the right after the dot: “flv”, “jpg”, mp3, and so on.

or select the required file and press the "F2" key on the keyboard (analogous to the "Rename" command).

Delete the old extension to dot and enter the new extension instead. Remember not to touch the dot, otherwise the extension will merge with the file name. After the new extension is indicated, press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.

The Windows operating system will give you a warning window that after changing the extension, the file may become inaccessible. Click the button "Yes" to confirm the change.

This will change the file extension.

And now on the desktop you can see graphic icons of files with an indication of its extension

If suddenly the file stops opening, just put the old extension back in place. This usually helps to correct the situation.

And here is a video tip to help you:

If you want to know what a particular extension means, take a look at filetypes.

I recommend not hiding file extensions on your computer if you are not familiar with them yet. Open file extensions will help you quickly learn which extension belongs to which type of file, and if you come across a file-virus, for example, a picture comes by mail, and its extension is EXE or BAT (executable files), then you will never open such file.

Also, file extensions are often shown by default in many file managers, for example, Total Commander.

2.How to change file extensions in Total Commander

In Total Commander, extensions are listed in the second column of the disk window.

To rename the file, press Shift + F6 and just write a new extension.

After that, do not forget to press Enter, and the file changes its "surname". Now flv video as mp4 can be safely uploaded to LiveInternet.

And lastly:

Remember! As a rule, changing file extensions often makes it impossible to open and edit them in the future. Therefore, you need to be very careful when experimenting with extensions. However, some file extensions change without much effect, for example a text file with a txt extension can easily be turned into an html web page that opens in a browser.

It is best not to resort to changing file extensions, but to save files in the desired format, use the "Save As" command, which is usually located in the "File" menu of all common programs. For example, you can save a Word 2007 docx document in the Word 2003 doc document format. A simple change of the document file extension using the "Rename" command will make the docx file unreadable.

Based on materials BraveDefender, yachaynik.ru,

From time to time, users have a question: "How can I change the file format?" This question may arise in cases of working with pictures, videos, text files, and so on.

Cases when you need to change the file format.

  1. It is often necessary to change the file format to change its size, since it can be different in different formats.
  2. Some programs and devices can read / play files of a certain format, which also forces the user to find a way to change the format of the required file.

First, let's find out what the file format is.

A file format should be understood as a certain, or rather a specific specification of the structure of data recorded in a computer file. Usually the format is indicated in the file name, as an independent part, separated from the name by a dot.

Inexperienced users, due to their ignorance, consider the concepts of extension and file format to be the same. In fact, it is not so.

A good example of this is the extension files “. "And" .txt ". Only the former include structured textual data that meets the requirements and standards of Microsoft Word, and the latter - exclusively textual information. Thus, ".doc" and ".txt" files have the same format, but differ in extension.

Now that you know what a file format is, let's move on to the main question.

Instructions for changing the file format.

Method 1. Manually.

This method is considered the simplest, but sometimes not effective.

Before changing the file format, decide on the final format you need.

In order to carry out this process, you need to right-click on the file to be changed and select "Rename". In the menu that opens, find the format you are interested in, enter any name for the file and save it.

Following simple prompts, you need to install one of the applications on your computer. Next, you need to select the desired file in the program and indicate the format into which it should be converted. And that's all.

The whole process will take you no more than a few minutes.

The programs are convenient in that they can convert several files at the same time.

This method should be used if you have problems installing converting programs.

Before changing the file format, search the Internet for resources that provide such services. There are plenty of them now, so finding them shouldn't cause any problems.

Today, dear friends, we will analyze a very important issue that interests a huge number of computer and laptop users. But before we start talking about this, let's find out what an extension is and why it needs to be changed. Let's go in order.

The extension is necessary so that the operating system can quickly determine what type of format a particular file belongs to. Let's say you have uploaded a photo.jpg to your desktop. If the system did not automatically detect the extension, then every time you see a photo, you would have to manually select the program through which this image would open. Difficult, agree?

Why might you need to change an extension? Here's a simple example: you have m4a files on your computer that your iPod can't read at all. What to do in such cases? Alternatively, you can use special programs that allow you to customize formats. However, such programs are often expensive and take up a lot of free time. Therefore, the most optimal solution can be considered a simple change of the extension, because the file itself does not change from this, but the iPod can easily read it.

Changing the extension using the standard method

Let me tell you right away, friends, that there is no fundamental difference in this matter between the operating systems Windows XP, Vista or 7, so we will show an example based on the latter of them.

Open the "Start" panel - "Control Panel" - "Folder Options".

A new window has opened in front of you. Select the "View" tab and scroll down until you see the inscription "Hide extensions for registered file types." Uncheck the box next to it, and then click "Apply" and OK.

Now what? And now we go to the desktop or to the folder where the desired file is located, select it, right-click and select the "Rename" item from the menu. Now you can safely change the file extension to whatever you need. As you can see, the whole process took only a minute of your free time.

As for Windows XP, the folder settings section in this operating system is not in the control panel, but in the "Tools" section (open any folder and you will see it in the top menu). Otherwise, there are no differences.

We use the file manager

You can always use the file manager if it is installed on your computer. In extreme cases, such a program can be downloaded on the Internet - they are distributed, as a rule, completely free of charge. V in this case we will show an example based on Total Commander.

Open your file manager, select the drive and folder where the file is located. Hover the mouse arrow over it, select Rename and change the extension.

We use WinRAR

This method is designed for the most real maniacs and you can use it only for your own satisfaction, since it is too unusual, although simple.

Surely most of you have a program for archiving and unzipping files installed on your computer. It will be useful to us.

Take the file and zip it using WinRAR. Then open the archive, select the desired file, change the extension and unzip.

We hope we helped you with the answer. If you have questions or any advice, do not hesitate, post them through the comments, we will be interested to read them. Sincerely.
