Have a brand new Apple Watch? Congratulations! Sit back and put everything aside. You will have to: pair with your iPhone, update watchOS, customize the Apple Watch for yourself, and, of course, install some cool apps. I'll tell you about all this now.

My bad first setup experience

Setting up the Apple Watch for the first time wasn't quite as quick as I expected it to be. The process itself is very easy, but the speed of rebooting, charging and synchronizing takes some time. Therefore, having bought a new watch, do not think that you will set it up in 5 minutes in the nearest cafe over a cup of coffee and go with it for a walk around the city. In any case, I didn't succeed.

I bought an Apple Watch at the airport when it was more than two hours before boarding. And I spent all that time charging, setting up and updating watchOS.

The stumbling block was the charging itself. The clock was discharged into the trash and did not even want to turn on. I partially charged them from the "power bank". Doing it on the go is a challenge. Magnetic charging does not hold up well and constantly falls off the watch.

After charging the watch to about 20 percent, I began the process of setting up a pair of Apple Watch with an iPhone, but at the end of the synchronization of applications, the clock was again discharged and the whole process had to start from the very beginning. Including the charging itself.

The second time everything worked out, but the update to the latest watchOS version took some more time. As a result, after almost 2 hours, I received a ready-to-use Apple Watch with almost empty batteries, so I spent the next 2 hours of flight again fully charging them.

But in reality, it’s not so bad. You can connect Apple Watch to iPhone much faster if you don't make my mistakes. It took me 15 minutes to re-pair the Apple Watch with the iPhone. But by this time, you need to add charging, time to install applications and watchOS updates. Anyway, I recommend brewing coffee. Let's go!

How to connect Apple Watch to iPhone

You need a charged Apple Watch, a phone with Bluetooth running, and the Watch app. Pairing devices is very intuitive: the watch and the phone tell you what to do and where to press. To connect Apple Watch to iPhone, you need to do the following:

  1. Charge Apple Watch at least 60%... Synchronization with an iPhone, setting quickly "eat up" the battery. And possible updates to watchOS requires the watch to be charged at least 50%. This is a very important point that will save you a lot of nerves. It takes approximately 55-60 minutes to charge Apple Watch from 0% to 60%;

  1. Turn on Apple Watch holding the side button for a long time (if they do not turn on, then, most likely, they are very discharged and you need to charge the Apple Watch again). The watch will immediately ask you to select the interface language and go into pairing mode with the iPhone.

  1. Launch the Watch app on iPhone and click on the “Pair with Apple Watch” button and point the video finder of the iPhone camera at the “galaxy” on the watch screen. The process is similar to scanning a regular QR code. Everyone, your watch is familiar with the iPhone. But this is where the fun just begins.

    Follow the prompts on the iPhone to complete the pairing process. You will be asked to perform a series of actions that many are already familiar with when activating an iPhone or iPad.

    Setting and hand selection... If this is your first watch, then tap Set As New Apple Watch. If you have configured it before, you can click Restore from Backup and follow the instructions on the screen. Then press Left or Right on iPhone to select a hand.

  1. Enter your Apple ID password to enjoy features such as Digital Touch and Handoff. If Find My iPhone isn't turned on on your iPhone, you'll also be asked to turn it on.

  1. P check the settings... IPhone settings from the Diagnostics & Usage, Location Services, and Siri screens will be transferred to Apple Watch, and vice versa. Therefore, if the settings for these services are changed on one device, they will be updated on the second.

  1. Create a password... If you click Create Passcode or Add Long Passcode on iPhone, you can create a personal passcode using your Apple Watch. Then you need to decide whether the iPhone will automatically unlock the watch.

  1. Synchronize programs... Click Install All to sync iPhone apps that are compatible with Apple Watch. Tap Later to sync only basic information such as Mail, Contacts, and Messages.

The duration of this process depends on the amount of data being synchronized. Keep the devices close to each other until you hear a beep and feel the slight pulsation of the Apple Watch.

The clock turned on. What's next?

Next, Apple Watch needs to be customized for yourself. And I will tell you how to do this using my personal example. In fact, my changes affect almost all settings, so by setting up the watch according to my instructions, you will immediately become familiar with all the settings of the Apple Watch.

We will do all the watch settings through the Watch app for iPhone. Something can be configured directly through the watch, but working with a small screen is not as convenient as with phones. So open the Watch app again and let's start.

How to update Apple Watch

First, you should check if there are fresh firmware for the Apple Watch and update to the latest one. For this:

  1. Open the app Watch
  2. Select "Basic"
  3. Click "Software Update"

If there is an update for the watch, the iPhone will inform you about it. To install it, just follow the instructions on the screen and the iPhone will do everything by itself. But remember that the watch and phone must be charged at least 50% to install.

How to install apps on Apple Watch

If you skipped the automatic installation of all programs compatible with Apple Watch during the watch settings, you will have to install them manually.

All compatible programs are available in the "My Watch" tab and are conditionally divided into two categories: software from Apple and everything else. To install the app on Apple Watch:

  1. Open the app Watch;
  2. Choose any application from the list (below);
  3. Click Show on Apple Watch.

That's all. After a couple of seconds, the program will be installed on Apple Watch and will appear in the list of applications.

In some applications, you will see additional options like "Show in Preview" and so on. We will return to these parameters a little later.

How to automatically install apps on Apple Watch

If a new application appears on the iPhone, which has a version for the Apple Watch, then it can be automatically installed on the watch. For this:

  1. Open the app Watch;
  2. Go to the "My Watch" tab;
  3. Select "Basic";
  4. Select "Install programs";
  5. Turn on "Automatic installation of programs".

How to sort apps on Apple Watch

A list of all applications on the Apple Watch can be seen by clicking once on the Digital Crown. In the center there is always a circle of clock icons, and icons of other applications appear around them.

In order not to look for the desired program for a long time, I place the most necessary ones around the clock icon, that is, in the very center. For this:

  1. Open the app Watch
  2. Go to the "My Watch" tab
  3. Select "Appearance"
  4. Arrange the icons in the desired order

How to set up notifications on Apple Watch

When the necessary programs are installed, I proceed to setting up notifications. By default, they are completely duplicated from your iPhone. But I prefer to keep only the really important ones. Not only is this less distracting but also saves your watch battery.

  1. Open the app Watch
  2. Go to the "My Watch" tab
  3. Select "Notifications"

Scroll to the bottom and turn off those notifications you don't want to see on Apple Watch. I have a couple of dozen of them.

How to change the brightness of the Apple Watch screen

In Apple Watch, there is no manual brightness control in the usual sense, it always changes automatically depending on ambient light. But you can choose from three automatic brightness algorithms. This can be done both on the watch itself and in the Watch app on the iPhone.

  1. Open the app Watch
  2. Go to the "Text brightness and size" tab
  3. Set the options you want

Personally, I set it to a minimum and do not experience any inconvenience, even at the equator. The display is a little faded in the sun, but the information is still visible.

What Apple Watch Shows When Activated

Apple Watch automatically activates when you raise your hand to look at your watch. The watch face is displayed by default. But I love to see the last running app displayed. For this:

  1. Open the app Watch
  2. Go to the "My Watch" tab
  3. Select "Basic"
  4. Select "Activate Screen" (bottom)
  5. Select the desired action

By the way, when you are on the watch face screen, a double tap on the Digital Crown will open the last launched application.

How to change the face of your Apple Watch

Unlike all the previous paragraphs, setting up the Apple Watch dial takes place on the watch itself. To change the watch face on your Apple Watch, press down firmly on the screen until you feel a vibration (Forth Touch press, like iPhone 6s). A menu with a selection of possible dials will open in front of you. Choose the one you like and click "Configure".

Left-right swipes will move you between watch face settings, and can be adjusted by turning the Digital Crown.

most watch faces have room to display extensions from third-party apps. These settings are found on the last screen and can also be changed with the Digital Crown. Press the Digital Crown and then tap the dial to save your changes.

In conclusion

Voi everything you need to start your Apple Watch for the first time. Now you can start exploring the programs yourself. Many of my favorite iPhone apps already have versions for the Apple Watch, so you have a lot to play with.

On the case of a smart watch from Apple, there are only 2 buttons. However, many users who recently bought a gadget may not always understand how to turn on Apple Watch and how to configure them. Difficulties also arise when trying to synchronize a smart watch with a smartphone. The manufacturer offers tips specifically for Apple Watch users that can help if a similar problem occurs.

for the first time

On the right side panel of the smart watch there is a Digital Crown, under which the button is located. The key is responsible for a wide range of functions. In this regard, it is not very different from the "Power" button on the iPhone. The element is responsible for turning the device on and off.

To activate Apple Watch, you should hold down the button on the side panel of the device and hold it in this position for several seconds until the Apple logo appears on the display of the gadget. The device turns off in the same way.

After holding the button for 2 seconds, a special menu will appear on the screen, in which you can turn off, lock or put the device in the energy saving mode.

Apple watch not included? For such cases they have a hard reboot function. To perform this function, you must simultaneously press the wheel and the button, and then hold them in this position for several seconds.

Setting up Apple Watch

Apple Watch instruction indicates that you must have an iPhone 5s or later with the latest operating system to use the watch. The following operations should be performed directly on the smartphone:

  1. You need to make sure that the Bluetooth wireless transmission function is turned on on your smartphone.
  2. The iPhone must have access to the internet or mobile network.

After turning on the watch, you need to position it close to your iPhone. After some time, an inscription will appear on the smartphone screen, signaling that the device is ready for configuration.

To start managing, you must click "Continue". The message may not appear right away. In this case, you should open the program for operating the watch (the rules of use describe in detail how to download and install it) and select the "Create a pair" item in it. To perform an action, you need to place the devices at a short distance.

A special animation will appear on the watch screen.

Official user guide indicates that it is necessary to position the gadget's dial with animation in the field of view of the iPhone's viewfinder. Then it is required that the pairing message appears on the smartphone.

If for some reason you cannot use the camera, you can manually pair with the smartwatch. To do this, select the advanced menu item and follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Detailed instruction in Russian language prompts you to choose which hand the owner prefers to wear the device. Provides the ability to manually adjust the clock or restore settings from a backup. If in case prolonged non-use some of the settings have lost their relevance, you can always reset the parameters.

The program on the smartphone will offer to accept the changes, in order to save them, you must agree to the terms of the application.

Smart watches are activated using Apple ID. After the corresponding field appears, you must enter the password from the service into it. If the password request does not appear, then you can sign in later. To do this, in the Apple application in the settings menu, select the "Apple ID" item, and then log in to the system. On smartwatches of the third series, some functions work only after you sign in to iCloud.

Some devices may not have the iPhone search service configured. In this case, an activation lock request will appear on the screen. This function prohibits the use of the device in case of loss or theft. If a lock warning appears on the watch screen, then the device is already linked to a different identifier. To unblock, you must enter the password and email address for the previously used ID.

IPhone sync

To set up your smart watch, you need to connect your smartphone to it. The process of syncing and connecting to Apple Watch depends on the amount of data available on your smartphone. It can last from a few seconds to several minutes. Completion of synchronization will be indicated by a beep and a slight pulsation of the clock. To confirm the completion of the process, press the wheel on the device.

If your Apple Watch won't turn on and won't respond to button presses, try solving the problem yourself. With the instructions and the tools you need, you can quickly fix simple faults. You can find out why the device does not turn on, check the integrity of the control board and the reliability of the contacts, even without special skills.

Most of the time, Apple Watch fails for the following reasons:

  • clock stuck after an update or as a result of a software crash

Why does the device not start

If your Apple Watch suddenly stops turning on, the problem might be due to a setting issue. Pay close attention to the notifications that appear on the screen of Apple technology. No messages on the display

Easy ways to fix devices

Difficult troubleshooting options

If your Apple Watch stops turning on and can't diagnose the problem right away, the damage could be serious. The malfunction may be associated with the failure of the button responsible for turning on the device, the malfunction of the microcircuit, or other reasons.
