How to resize image file. How to convert JPG files to smaller size without quality loss

There are situations when you need to reduce the size of the jpg file, or, simply put, compress. In this article, we will look at several ways to reduce the size of .jpg images.

There can be several reasons for reducing the jpg file:

  • Takes up less disk space
  • Site pages load faster on the site
  • Some services impose restrictions on the maximum image size.jpg

Let's look at a specific example. Let's have the following image

The image is 477 KB in size and 1600 x 1012 pixels wide. Let's reduce it in a couple of ways.

1. Reduce the .jpg size using Paint

This is the most affordable way to compress a picture. Its most important advantage is that this graphics editor is installed on all computers as a default program that operate on the Windows operating system. To get into the Paint image editing environment, just right-click on the image and select "open with Paint" from the drop-down menu.

The window that opens contains information about the original image size, which is displayed in pixels and as a percentage. Practice shows that it is easier to change jpg in pixels. Adjust the horizontal parameters you need, and do not forget to leave a tick next to the "Maintain proportions" item, so that the height changes automatically and the picture is not distorted.

Confirm the action with the OK button and save the result.

So we have achieved the expected result:

Now our jpg image is 404KB (up from 477) and has a resolution of 1200 x 759 pixels instead of 1600 x 1012 pixels. The result is so-so. Considering that the quality after clicking the "Save" button in Paint deteriorates.

2. Reducing JPG File Size Using Paint.NET

The Paint.NET program itself is very convenient to use due to its clear Russian-language interface. In addition, it takes up very little space, it can be downloaded on the Internet for free.

In order to get into the Paint.NET image editing environment, you need to right-click on the image, and in the "Open with" drop-down list, select the Paint.NET program.

In order to change the image of the jpg file, in the "Image" menu, select the "Resize" item, which is located at the top of the window.

After these steps, a window will open in which you will need to configure the file resolution.

Attention! Do not forget to leave a check mark next to the "Maintain aspect ratio" option so that the image is not distorted.

This time we have reduced the file size by a factor of two. We confirm the changes with the OK button, save the image.

Now the size of the jpg file is only 83 KB, not 477, has an extension of 600 x 380 pixels, while not losing image quality (reduced by 83%). Is this still not enough? 83 KB out of 477 is not the limit.

This image is only 18KB in size and has an extension of 260 by 160 pixels. This compression option is perfect for forums that do not support the ability to install heavy avatars.

The methods we have considered above are good, similar actions can be done in Adobe Photoshop or PhotoFilter, but the result will be the same.

But what if you don't want to download some programs to your computer, but do everything online? Services that allow you to edit images decently, there are plenty to even choose from.

3. How to reduce jpg file size online on the Internet

This option is perfect if you don't have any graphic editors at hand, and you need to reduce the size of the photo right now. There are a lot of such editors on the Internet now. You can reduce the jpg file using the compressjpeg.com online service.

The site greets us with a simple user interface. Before us is the "Download" button. We load the image we need.

This graphical editor has such an easy and intuitive user interface. Using the slider to the right of the image, you can adjust the compression quality of our image (the more the image is compressed, the more it loses its quality).

1. Quality - 100%. Image without any changes. File size - 478KB.

2. Quality - 50%. The image is no longer so clear, but it has not undergone any radical changes. The size of the new file is 155 KB.

3. Quality - 10%. The image is of terrible quality, the pixels are so large that the image is as if "glued" from squares. The size of this picture is 33 KB.

We select the compression method we need, then confirm the changes with the "SAVE" button, and download the finished file with the corresponding button at the top.

Summing up, I would like to say that the best program for reducing the size of a jpg file is the Paint.NET program, since it provides the largest list of settings for image compression, and besides this useful function, it also has a lot of other useful tools.

When uploading images to a website, social network, presentation and other text document, it is often necessary to resize them. This can be done in several ways, using special online applications or programs from the Microsoft Office suite. No special skills are required to reduce a photo, so even a novice PC user can cope with this task.

How to reduce photo size using Paint

The easiest and most affordable way to reduce the weight of an image is to use the standard Windows editor - Paint. It can be used to change the format and number of pixels, thereby reducing the size of the image.

How to do it:

  • Open the program by clicking "Start" - "Paint".
  • Load the image for editing by clicking "Open".

  • Open the section "Resize", and check the box next to "pixels".

  • Now let's reduce the size of the image for example. Instead of the specified 1050 pixels, we will specify 604 pixels horizontally. Since the program automatically maintains the aspect ratio of the picture, it will also be reduced vertically.

  • Then select "Save As ..." and the desired format for saving. The best option for a file is JPEG.

As a result, the size of the picture has decreased from 62.3 Kb to 44.0 Kb.

How to reduce photo size with the Picture Manager editor

To reduce the weight of a picture, you can use the Picture Manager program, which is included in Microsoft Office and is available on almost any computer.

How to do it:

  • Open the program by clicking Start - Microsoft Office - Microsoft Office Tools - Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Or, hover your mouse over the image and select Open With - Microsoft Office Picture Manager from the context menu.

  • Upload the photo you want and click "Change Picture". After that, a block with keys for image editing will appear. At the very bottom there will be two necessary tools: "Resize" and "Compress the picture".

  • If you need to adjust the resolution of the picture, select "Resize". Here you can specify the desired photo size. To do this, check the box next to the item "Custom height and width", and enter the parameters in the blank cells.

  • Or you can select Percentage of Original Width and Height and set the percentage of the image to be reduced, for example, 50%.

  • After that, you need to confirm the changes by clicking "Save". Then select "Save As" and be sure to rename the file to keep the source.
  • If you want to compress a picture without changing its graphic resolution, select Compress Pictures.
  • Then select the required action: compress for document, website, or e-mail.
  • Click "OK" and specify a new name for the file.

Reduce photo size using online services

If you are unable to use standard Windows applications, you can resort to a simple online photo editor, for example, Resizepiconline.

  • Follow this link.
  • Upload a photo.

  • Set the desired image size, quality level and file type using the slider.

  • Click Resize and Download. After that, the new photo will be downloaded to your computer.

You can reduce the size of the picture by simple actions to adjust the parameters of the image. You do not need to install additional software or acquire professional skills for this. But remember that photos often lose their original quality after this kind of editing.

Hello. Quite often, when working with graphic files (pictures, photographs, and indeed any images) they need to be compressed. Most often, this is necessary to transfer them over the network or put them on the site.

And despite the fact that today there are no problems with the volumes of hard drives (if it is not enough, you can buy an external HDD for 1-2 TB and this will be enough for a very large number of high-quality photos), store images in a quality that you will not need - not justified!

In this article, I want to consider several ways how you can compress and reduce the size of a picture. In my example, I will use the first 3 photos that I come across on the vastness of the worldwide network.

Most popular image formats

1) bmp is the image format that provides the best quality. But you have to pay for the quality with the space occupied by the pictures saved in this format. The size of the photos they will occupy can be seen in screenshot # 1.

Screenshot 1. 3 pictures in bmp format. Pay attention to the size of the files.

2) jpg is the most popular image and photo format. Provides reasonably good quality with amazing compression quality. By the way, please note that a picture with a resolution of 4912 × 2760 in bmp format is 38.79MB, and in jpg format it is only 1.07MB. Those. the picture in this case was compressed about 38 times!

As for the quality: if the picture is not enlarged, then by eye it is impossible to recognize where is bmp, and where is jpg. But when you enlarge a picture in jpg, blur starts to appear - this is the effect of compression ...

Screenshot # 2. 3 pictures in jpg

3) png - (portable network graphics) is a very convenient format for transferring pictures on the Internet (* - in some cases, pictures compressed in this format take up space even less than jpg, and their quality is higher!). Provides better color reproduction and does not distort the picture. Recommended for images that should not lose quality and that you want to upload to a website. By the way, the format supports transparent background.

4) gif is a very popular format for pictures with animation (more about animation :). The format is also very popular for transferring pictures on the Internet. In some cases, it provides the size of pictures smaller in size than in the jpg format.

Screenshot No. 4. 3 pictures in gif

Despite the huge variety of graphic file formats (and there are more than fifty of them), these files (listed above) are most often found on the Internet, and indeed in general.

How to reduce image size in Adobe Photoshop

In general, of course, for the sake of simple compression (conversion from one format to another), installing Adobe Photoshop is probably not justified. But this program is quite popular and those who work with pictures not even so often have it on their PC.

1. Open the picture in the program (either through the "File / open ..." menu, or the combination of buttons "Ctrl + O").

3. Set the save settings:

Quality: depending on the selected quality (and you can set the compression from 10 to 100), the size of the picture will depend. Examples of compressed images with different quality will be shown in the center of the screen.

After that, just save the picture - its size will be an order of magnitude smaller (especially if it was in bmp)!

Result:

The compressed image began to weigh less, about 15 times: from 4.63 MB was compressed to 338.45 KB.

Other image compression programs

1. Fastone image viewer

One of the fastest and most convenient programs for viewing pictures, easy editing, and, of course, compressing them. By the way, it allows you to view pictures even in ZIP archives (many users often install the AcdSee program for this).

In addition, Fastone allows you to reduce the size of tens and hundreds of images at once!

1. Open the folder with the pictures, then select the ones you want to compress with the mouse, and then click on the "Service / Batch Processing" menu.

Move the pictures from the left to the right (those that we want to compress);

Choose the format we want to compress them into;

Actually that's all - after that just press the start button. By the way, in addition to this, you can set various settings for image processing, for example: crop edges, change the resolution, put a logo, etc.

3. After the compression procedure - Fastone will provide a report on how much hard disk space has been saved.

2. XnVew

A very popular and convenient program for working with photos and pictures. By the way, I edited and compressed the pictures for this article in XnView.

Also, the program allows you to take screenshots of a window or a certain part of it, edit and view pdf files, find similar pictures and delete duplicates, etc.

1) To compress photos, select the ones you want to process in the main window of the program. Then go to the Tools / Batch menu.

2) Select the format into which you want to compress the pictures and press the start button (you can also set the compression settings).

3) The result is rather awkward, the picture is compressed by an order of magnitude.

Was in bmp format: 4.63 MB;

Now in jpg format: 120.95 KB. "By eye" the pictures are practically the same!

3. RIOT

Another very interesting program for compressing images. The bottom line is simple: you open any picture (jpg, gif or png) in it, then you immediately see two windows: one is the original picture, and the other is the output. The RIOT program automatically calculates how much the picture will weigh after compression, and also shows you the compression quality.

What else captivates in it - the abundance of settings, pictures can be compressed in different ways: make them clearer or turn on blur; you can turn off color or only tints of a specific color range.

By the way, a great opportunity: in RIOT you can specify what file size you need and the program will automatically select the settings and set the image compression quality!

Here's a small piece of work: The picture was compressed to 82KB from a 4.63MB file!

Online services for compressing images

In general, personally, I do not really like to compress images using online services. Firstly, I think it takes longer than a program, secondly, online services do not have so many settings, and thirdly, I would not like to upload all pictures to third-party services (after all, there are also personal photos that you show only in close family circle).

Often, in order to send a photo to friends, you first need to reduce it. This can save loading time and make the images easier to view. To reduce both the size and volume of the photo, without degrading the quality of the picture, visual editors are used, and which one to choose is up to you.

Reducing the snapshot in the Paint editor

This is the easiest and most affordable way. Even if you do not have editors for working with photos installed on your computer, Paint is necessarily present by default in any system on Windows.

Confirm the action and save the changes to the file.

Paint is very useful for keeping track of the weight of your photos and drawings. This can be useful if you do not want to exceed the size limit for the file you are using.

Reducing a photo in Photoshop

This method is suitable for you only if Photoshop is installed on your computer. Otherwise, it is better to resize the photo in any other available software.

Photoshop does the job of shrinking JPG files in three ways:

  • Reduced resolution... Up to a certain limit, the picture will not lose quality. By decreasing the resolution, you actually reduce the number of dots in the file, which makes it lighter.
  • Decrease in quality... This method is to compress JPG. High-quality photos always weigh a lot, and low-quality photos, even at large sizes, don't.
  • Combining the two previous methods... This is the best and optimal method in almost all cases, because the photo can be reduced, but the quality is not lost either.
Follow the steps below to reduce the JPG file.

If you uncheck the "resampling" checkbox, then the "resolution" parameter will be associated with the width and height, changing them automatically.

Reducing JPG file for Web

In Photoshop, it is possible to reduce the size of the photo without losing quality, adapting the file for the Internet.

Reducing the photo in ACDSee

Visual editor ACDSee is a cross between standard Paint and professional Photoshop. Paint's capabilities are not enough if you need to process images in large quantities, for example, from a wedding or from an important event. It is for these purposes that ACDSee is suitable.

When you confirm your actions by clicking on the "resize" button, then all the selected photos will receive a new size.

Reduce photo online

This option is suitable for you if you do not have any editors on your computer, and you need to process the image right now. There are enough visual editors on the web. You can use picmonkey.com for example.

Thus, if your photos take up too much space on your computer or you want to quickly send files to friends, then reducing the size of the images is a must. Visual editors will help you change the characteristics of a photo in a matter of seconds.

Pictures began to take up too much space and it is simply impossible to send them by e-mail due to the restrictions of postal services? - In this post, we will look at how to reduce the size of a JPG file as efficiently as possible and with minimal loss in the quality of the source. A lot has already been written on the Internet on this topic, but someone uses expensive programs, while others ignore the undisputed leaders in this niche.

I do not quite understand the desire of some storytellers who impose on you, to solve such an elementary task, install monstrous Photoshop with an abundance of various plug-ins and filters. You can make a simple cropping of an image and try to shrink it in size using standard Windows tools - Paint, for example. Of course, with him we will lose in quality, but what prevents us from considering other methods? - You will have plenty to choose from.

I want to start with a little explanation about the image resolution and its size - they do not always grow proportionally. The size of different pictures in the same resolution can differ significantly, but if we reduce the resolution for a very specific file, then its size is guaranteed to decrease in the end.

Lowering the resolution is not the best idea for compressing images, but under certain conditions they do occur in real life. For example, send a photo to a friend or friend by e-mail - the difference will be almost invisible on the monitor screen (with a reasonable reduction, of course), but for printing on large formats such a picture is no longer suitable - the file resolution is very critical there.

But this is not the only way to compress a picture - we can use compression algorithms and remove meta tags from photos to reduce their size as much as possible. Surely many have noticed that Vkontakte often marks the place on the map where the shooting was made. Your JPG file may contain information about GPS coordinates, camera models, shooting date and other information that is simply not needed for a normal picture. Just by compressing the image and removing this information, we can make our JPG file lose weight.

Resizing JPG files using Paint

To correct the resolution of the JPG file, we do not have to install various programs (a stone's throw to those who recommend installing Photoshop to compress pictures) - everything is already in standard Windows applications, I think everyone is familiar with Paint.

We need to open an image in it and go through all the points in order, as shown in the picture below. In the window that appears, you can safely experiment (change as a percentage or set fixed dimensions in pixels), just make sure that there is a checkmark next to "Maintain aspect ratio" - otherwise you can get too stretched or flattened image. For sending by email, so that even on the largest monitor everything looks good, 1080 pixels will be enough horizontally (the picture below is about 730 pixels wide by the way)

Unfortunately, Paint does not know how to compress images in our usual sense, they can only reduce the resolution of the JPG file, which is not always suitable. Here you cannot do without third-party programs - we will consider free options that are as easy to use as possible.

By the way, to open a picture in Paint, just right-click on it and select "Change", the image will automatically open in the editor.

FileOptimizer - Remove unnecessary things from the photo

FiileOptimizer is a whole combine that can easily compress all your files on your computer in a couple of clicks. It can compress not only one file, but also the entire folder.

Agree that compressing files one at a time can take a lot of time and quickly become annoying if you need to reduce more than a dozen photos. And then he threw the folder and you can have tea with bergamot.

It is clear that we will lose quality in quality, but with the standard settings FileOptimizer squeezes on the edge of size and quality - most likely you will not see a difference, but in fact it will be present. If you wish, you can make finer settings. (and the program can compress not only JPG, but also a lot of other formats) and set the required compression level.

For the sake of interest, I pulled a small selection of desktop wallpapers from torrents to estimate how much the images will lose in weight after being processed by the FileOptimizer program.

I dropped the entire folder into the program, clicked "Optimize all files" and left the program running. Unfortunately, I have not noticed how long this process lasted, and even for you it will depend on the performance of the processor installed in your system.

As you can see, we have made some progress in compression. Albeit a little, but the size of the files has changed to a smaller side - isn't that what we wanted? For maximum effect, you need to use complex measures: we reduced the resolution and in FileOptimizer it - at the output we will get the most compressed file.

Since the program is free, I recommend downloading it to you only from the official website, by the way there is a version that does not require installation - this is exactly the option I used in the current review.

How to reduce JPG file size online is my choice

In my place, it would be a crime to ignore the best online service for resizing JPG files. (there is support for PNG compression)... All pictures on this site are compressed through this service. To get started, just follow the link:

There are some restrictions here, for example, you can process no more than 20 files at a time and their size should not exceed 5 megabytes. You can just drag the images to the browser window and wait for the processing to finish. The test file with the image of my desktop, saved through Paint, was able to reduce by 2 times without any visible loss in quality - I think this is a very decent result.

The resulting image can be downloaded to your computer or sent to the cloud to your DropBox account.

There is also a Photoshop plugin from TinyJPG for compressing images on your computer. However, it is like all good things - it costs money, as well as PhotoShop itself.

Conclusions on JPG compression

Of course, there are many more ways to reduce the size of a JPG file. The article could be called “The 20 Best Ways to Reduce JPG File Size” and cover this topic in as much detail as possible. However, I do not see the point in this - I have described the options that I use myself.

P.S. Now you know how to reduce the size of a JPG file - there are as many as 3 effective and easy ways. Until recently, I did not trust third-party resources and always looked for programs on a computer to solve specific problems, but after trying tinyjpg I changed my views and approach. I hope you, too, will enjoy using online tools in your and work, and you will allow them to save the cherished kilobytes of space.
