How do I change the spacing between paragraphs of text? Add a long or short space.

In MS Word, there is a fairly large selection of styles for documenting, there are many fonts, besides this, various formatting styles and the ability to align text are available. Thanks to all these tools, you can qualitatively improve the appearance of the text. However, sometimes even such a wide selection of funds seems insufficient.

We have already written about how to align text in MS Word documents, increase or decrease indents, change line spacing, and directly in this article we will talk about how to make large spacing between words in Word, that is, roughly speaking, how to increase the length space. In addition, if necessary, you can also reduce the distance between words using a similar method.

By itself, the need to make the distance between words more or less than the default program does not arise so often. However, in cases when it is nevertheless required to be done (for example, in order to visually highlight some fragment of the text or, conversely, to push it to the “background”), not the most correct ideas come to mind.

So, to increase the distance, someone puts two or more spaces instead of one, someone uses the TAB key to indent, thereby creating a problem in the document that is not so easy to get rid of. When it comes to reduced gaps, the solution doesn't even come close.

The size (value) of the space, which denotes the distance between words, is standard, and it increases or decreases only with a change in the font size up or down, respectively.

However, few people know that in MS Word there is a long (double), short space, as well as a quarter space character (¼), which can be used to increase or decrease the distance between words. They are located in the section "Special characters", which we have already written about.

So, the only correct decision that can be made if necessary to increase or decrease the distance between words is to replace ordinary spaces with long or short ones, as well as ¼ spaces. We will tell you how to do this below.

Add a long or short space

1. Click on an empty place (preferably on an empty line) in the document to place the cursor movement pointer there.

2. Open the tab "Insert" and in the menu button "Symbol" select item "Other symbols".

3. Go to the tab "Special characters" and find there "Long space", "Short space" or "¼ space", depending on what you need to add to the document.

4. Click on this special sign and press the button "Insert".

5. A long (short or quarter) space will be inserted in a blank area of the document. Close the window "Symbol".

Replace regular spaces with double spaces

As you probably understand, manually replacing all the usual spaces with long or short ones in the text or a separate fragment of it does not make the slightest sense. Fortunately, instead of the lengthy copy-paste process, this can be done using the Replace tool, which we have already written about earlier.

1. Select the added long (short) space with the mouse and copy it ( CTRL + C). Make sure you copy one character and there were no spaces or indents on this line before.

2. Select all text in the document ( CTRL + A) or select with the mouse a piece of text, the standard spaces in which must be replaced with long or short ones.

3. Click the button "Replace" which is located in the group "Editing" in the tab "Home".

4. In the opened dialog box Find and Replace in line "Find" put a regular space, and in the line "Replaced by" paste the previously copied space ( CTRL + V) that was added from the window "Symbol".

5. Click the button "Replace All", and then wait for the message about the number of replacements performed.

6. Close the notification, close the dialog Find and Replace... All usual spaces in the text or the fragment you selected will be replaced with large or small, depending on what you needed to do. If necessary, repeat the above steps for another piece of text.

Note: Visually, with an average font size (11, 12), short spaces and even ¼-spaces are almost impossible to distinguish from standard spaces, which are put using a key on the keyboard.

Already here we could finish, if not for one "but": in addition to increasing or decreasing the spacing between words in the Word, you can also change the spacing between letters, making it smaller or larger in comparison with the default values. How to do it? Just follow these steps:

1. Select a piece of text in which you want to increase or decrease the indents between letters in words.

2. Open the group dialog box "Font" by clicking on the arrow in the lower right corner of the group. Also, you can use the keys "CTRL + D".

3. Go to the tab "Additionally".

4. In the section "Character spacing" in the item menu "Interval" choose "Sparse" or "Condensed"(enlarged or reduced, respectively), and in the line to the right ( "On the") set the necessary value for indents between letters.

5. After you set the required values, press "OK" to close the window "Font".

6. The indents between the letters will change, which, together with long spaces between words, will look quite appropriate.

But in the case of decreasing the indents between words (the second paragraph of the text in the screenshot), everything did not look the best, the text turned out to be unreadable, coherent, so the font had to be increased from 12 to 16.

That's all, in this article you learned how to change the spacing between words in a MS Word document. I wish you success in exploring other features of this multifunctional program, with detailed instructions on how to work with which we will delight you in the future.

The force of mutual attraction is the force with which bodies of any mass located at some distance from each other are attracted to each other.
The force of mutual attraction, like all forces, is denoted by the letter "F" and can be calculated as follows: F = G * m 1 * m 2 / r 2, where:

  • G is the gravitational constant. G = 6.67 * 10 -11 (measured in: m 3 * kg -1 * s -2).
  • m 1 - the mass of the first body, measured in kg.
  • m 2 - the mass of the second body, measured in kg.
  • r 2 - the distance between the centers of two bodies (between the bodies), measured in m 2.

How the force of mutual attraction of two bodies will change if the distance between them is increased by 2 times

We know the formula: F = G * m 1 * m 2 / r 2, if we increase r by 2 times, then r 2 will increase by 2 * 2 times, that is, r 2 will increase by 4 times. Since r 2 is in the denominator of the fraction, the denominator of the fraction will increase by 4 times. According to the rule of mathematics: if the denominator of a fraction increases by a certain number of times, then the fraction will decrease by the same number of times. This means that in our case the fraction will decrease by 4 times (since none of the variables except r changes). Therefore, F will decrease by 4 times.
Answer: if the distance between two bodies is increased by 2 times, then the force of mutual attraction between these bodies will decrease by 4 times.

Set the line spacing before starting work. If you want to create a document with one standard line spacing, set it first (to save time later). To change the line spacing, go to the Home tab or Page Layout tab.

Change the spacing on the Home tab. On the Home tab, find the Paragraph section. Here, click the Line Spacing icon to expand the corresponding menu. The icon looks like four small horizontal lines with arrows pointing up and down. From this menu, you can select general line spacing options.

  • If the Line Spacing icon does not appear, it is most likely due to insufficient screen space on your device. You can change the spacing by clicking the down arrow icon below the word "Paragraph". The corresponding menu will open.
  • In the Paragraph menu, you can adjust the line spacing using the Line Spacing: drop-down menu in the Spacing section.
  • Change the spacing on the Page Layout tab. On the Page Layout tab, click the down arrow next to the word Paragraph. The corresponding menu will open. In the Paragraph menu, you can adjust the line spacing using the Line Spacing: drop-down menu in the Spacing section.

Change the spacing between paragraphs. In addition to changing the spacing between lines, you can change the spacing before and after each paragraph. On the Page Layout tab, look for Spacing in the Paragraph section.

    • If you select "Before", spacing is added before the beginning of each paragraph.
    • If you select After, spacing will be added each time you press Enter (to start a new paragraph).
  • Know what your line spacing options are. By default, line spacing is set to 1.15. If you want to set the spacing to single, you need to select 1 in the drop-down menu of the "Line spacing" icon.

    • “Exactly” allows you to set the exact distance between lines, measured in points (72 points in inch).
    • “Multiplier” allows you to set a larger interval, for example, a triple interval.
  • Change the default spacing. If you want to change the default interval (1.15), set the desired values and click the "Default" button. You will be prompted to confirm the changes to the default values.

  • Change the spacing for specific parts of the text. To do this, select the text you want to change and then adjust the spacing as described above.

    • You can change the spacing of the entire document by selecting all the text. To quickly select all text, press Ctrl + A (PC) or ⌘ Command + A(Mac). It will not affect headers, footers, or text boxes. To change the spacing in them, you will need to select these sections separately.
  • Explore keyboard shortcuts. If you frequently change the line spacing, keyboard shortcuts can save you a lot of time. Use the following keyboard shortcuts to change line spacing:

    • Select the text where you want to change the spacing.
    • Press Ctrl + 2 (PC) or ⌘ Command + 2(Mac). This will end up with 2 (double) spacing.
    • Press Ctrl + 5 (PC) or ⌘ Command + 5(Mac). As a result, you will get 1.5 (one and a half) intervals.
    • Press Ctrl + 1 (PC) or ⌘ Command + 1(Mac). This will end up with 1 (single) spacing.

Change the spacing between paragraphs of text created with a tag

    Solution

    When using the tag

Indents are automatically added to the top and bottom of the text paragraph. This is done in order to visually separate one block of text from the next. It is clear that the default indentation values are not always satisfactory, so sometimes they have to be decreased or increased. To do this, you can use the universal property margin, it defines the padding on all sides of the paragraph or margin-top for the top padding and margin-bottom for the bottom padding (example 1).

Example 1. Changing the indent value of a paragraph

    Indentation in the text

    The sun was shining bright
The wind turned out to be fair -
    Travelers dropped out
The path is pleasant and easy.
Suddenly in the distance a pirate ship
    Showed up with a long flag;
There was a battering ram on it,
    Prepared for attacks.

    Howling loudly into the pipes,
    The robbers went to meet,
They shouted in a menacing voice,
    Calling everyone to the slaughter.
    Frightened sailors
    White as chalk.
    Only the knight was calm
    Only he was not shy.

The result of the example is shown in Fig. one.

In this example, different indents are applied at the top and bottom of the paragraph. This is especially true when there are images and subheadings in the text.

How to change line spacing and the spacing between paragraphs in Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, the first of which is a text editor, and the second is a program for creating slides and presentations? The principle of changing the line spacing is the same in both programs.

So, you typed the text, now your task is to format it. To change the line spacing, first select and highlight the section of text to which you want to apply the settings. If it's one specific paragraph, just hover over it (for Office 2007 and 2013).

Option 1. Open the "Menu" tab, move the cursor over the "Format" button, select the "Paragraph" item in the drop-down list, a dialog box will appear. Here, in the "Indents and spacing" tab, there is the "Line spacing" field, with a drop-down menu where you can select the type of spacing you need: single, one and a half, etc.

Option 2. Select the "Page Layout" tab, it already has a "Paragraph" field, click in the lower right corner of the field, the dialog box appears again. You can also enter the exact numerical value of the required spacing. All in the same window, in the "Intervals" section, there is the "Value" field. Enter the required parameter in it.

Option 3. Find on the toolbar at the top of the working window the button, when you hover over which, a prompt “Change the spacing between lines” appears, click it, and in the drop-down list, adjust the setting. It should be borne in mind that when choosing the type of spacing "single", "double", the actual spacing between the lines will depend on the selected font size.

    Change the spacing between paragraphs

If you need to change the spacing between paragraphs, then in the "Page layout" field, you need to find the "Line spacing" buttons, which look like an image of lines, on the left of which there are arrows pointing at each other and in different directions. With their help, the interval "Before" and "After" of the paragraph you specified is formed, enter the data either manually or using the scroll buttons.
