IPhone vs Xiaomi - gadgets comparison. Which is better? Who's faster? Xiaomi or iPhone

We are launching the next round of the unprecedented battle of the main flagships of 2018: Xiaomi Mi 8 vs iPhone X.

This time let's compare performance and performance in real applications and use cases.

Choose who you are for!

I AM, Nikolay Maslov, and orange the team in the right corner is rooting for the best Chinese smartphone - Xiaomi Mi 8.

Chief Editor Nikita Goryainov and his blue support Apple's main flagship- iPhone X.

Who will actually be faster and better? Who will win? It's up to you, the readers. Vote and paint the site in your color!

Specifications: platforms so different

Xiaomi Mi 8 has become one of the fastest smartphones of this year. True, it quickly lost its status - followed by even faster xiaomi with liquid-cooled processor.

However, the Mi 8 works Snapdragon 845 which is still the fastest serial processor for Android devices. Additional benefits are added by fast memory LPDDR4x and a smart drive with memory like UFS 2.1.

Snapdragon 845 is a 2018 processor. Alas, the iPhone X uses a flagship chip Apple A11 Bionic Neural last year, which is inferior to "845" in synthetic tests. Slightly slower storage, memory. But this is in theory.

Both single-chip platforms include an additional machine learning or "artificial intelligence" chip for better photo quality and processing some computational problems. And Apple has it already debugged.

Besides, the eternal scourge of Android is not hardware at all, but the operating system itself. Compared to the smooth, modified iOS, even branded Korean and American flagships fall behind.

Will Mi 8 be able to make good use of a powerful but hot processor? And how do you compare 2 fundamentally different smartphones?

How do you compare the performance of different systems?

The performance test is the most difficult of all that we faced in the battle between Xiaomi Mi 8 and iPhone X. How can you compare 2 devices running fundamentally different systems?

Pretty simple: it is enough to evaluate their work in the same tasks, in the same applications.

Readers can familiarize themselves with the results of our work below. Our video is your opinion.

Cold start. Who will start the system faster?

An attempt to turn on smartphones at the same time. It seems that Xiaomi Mi 8 has something to show the iPhone, right? But it is too early to write it down as a winner.

System speed and interface smoothness. The most honest test

It was the turn to evaluate the quality of the work. Desktops, launching system applications - that's all with which we collide constantly... Even more often than we write messages.

Much in this test depends on developers applications. Nevertheless, a general opinion can be made, because no one optimizes programs for a particular smartphone. If it's not an Apple smartphone.

Therefore, we tested smartphones in Chrome: this browser will gobble up any amount of memory. And so on any platform: not only in mobile iOS / Android - neither Windows nor * .NIX will save!

Let's play? Testing the speed of working with 3D graphics

The release of the new Asphalt has greatly simplified our task: this is the most demanding game of 2018, which uses all the resources of the device. Here you can see the speed of the drive and evaluate its exchange with the RAM.

And throttling, by the way, which is inherent in Snap 845, can also manifest itself in just a few seconds. The load on the processor and video core is overwhelming.

Synthetic tests. A graceful half-truth

Antutu Results

Various programs for complex performance testing do not work well even for evaluating Android smartphones. What to say when iPhone and Xiaomi come together in battle?

The fact is that the result measured in "Parrots", shows not the pure speed of the "iron" - to reduce errors in the calculations are used various odds.

Geekbench results

They do not match in different versions of the program. And when 2 devices process data differently (different hardware = different drivers and approach to their design), the numbers begin to give strictly rough estimates.

And yet, who is faster: Xiaomi or iPhone?

Both smartphones run smoothly. Applications start quickly - whatever. Surfing is comfortable and 3D games are equally fast.

Is it worth it in this case to pay attention to synthetic tests? Or better believe your eyes. After all, the battle of the flagships turns into a battle of application and system optimization. As you can see, Xiaomi is doing great with the first one. The second depends not only on the developer.

There is definitely a difference. But smartphones differ in price by almost half: Xiaomi Mi 8 costs 30 thousand rubles, and iPhone X- 70 thousand rubles.

After the presentation of the new iphone XS on September 12, 2018. We immediately wanted to make the most honest comparison of the two flagships from the giants, smartphone manufacturers, against the iphone XS.

So let's go:

The appearance of the two flagships

On the left is the Xiaomi Mi 8, and on the right the iphone XS

As you know, there is no dispute about tastes. But we think the design is very similar.

Material performance Xiaomi mi 8.

The phone is frameless, the back panel is made of glass, the body is held together by an aluminum frame. The flagship can be purchased in several colors:

  • White
  • Black
  • Gold
  • blue

Material design iphone XS

Also, a frameless phone, the back and front panels are made of tempered glass, fastened with a frame made of surgical steel. The flagship can be purchased in the following colors:

  • gold
  • gray space
  • silver

We conclude that smartphones will be very similar in terms of tactile sensations.

From left to right, XSMax is 6.5 inches, Mi8 is 6.21 inches, XS is 5.8 inches, respectively.

Face recognition.

And the device from Apple and Xiaomi has built-in FACE ID function. In Mi 8 phones, user recognition is carried out with an infrared sensor for increased accuracy. The iPhone XS has improved the Face id response speed over the previous generation iPhone X.

Water and dust resistant.

The Iphone XS pleases its fans with a new protection against water and dust according to the ip 68 standard. Now the phone can stay under water at a depth of 2 meters for 30 minutes.

And, here, the top-end smartphone Mi8 cannot boast of water protection. Xiaomi mi8 vs iphone XS has nothing to oppose. It is a pity, we hope that in the next generation the Chinese will correct this, frankly speaking, defect.

The Xiaomi mi8 camera is two points better than the iphone X. While there is no data on testing the new iphone XS, as practice shows, the new generation of iPhones significantly improve the quality of photography. In absentia, we can conclude that the iphone XS camera will shoot better.

It is impossible not to note important innovations in the iphone XS:

  • New function "Depth of field". When editing a portrait, you can adjust the depth of field of the image.
  • Portrait lighting. In Portrait mode, you can select the lighting effect with one swipe - both before and after shooting.

Antutu performance and testing

Antutu testing shows us that the iphone XS can be considered the most powerful smartphone in the world at the moment. 363 525 points.

A device and its software only work really well together if they are designed together. Steve Jobs

Antutu testing

Let's compare the closest competitors and see how the Xiaomi mi8 ranks in the ranking:

Testing Antutu smartphones on Android OS

As you can see from the two previous tables, the closest competitor with 289415 points is the gaming MiBlack Shark, and our Xiaomi Mi8 is in sixth place with 272622 points. Thus, the performance gap is about 90,000 points. A very large performance advantage is in favor of the apple. The gap can be compared with different generations of phones, such as Samsung S9 and Samsung S8.

On board Apple is a new 7-nanometer 6-core A12 Bionic processor.

Advantages of the A12 processor over its younger brother A11

At the disposal of the Xiaomi Mi8 is the now popular Snapdragon 845. Here, it should be noted that Apple had a 10nm processor on the A11 processor (the previous generation on the iphone X). In this matter, Xiaomi Mi8 versus iphone XS has nothing to oppose.

Power and battery Xiaomi Mi8 vs iphone XS:

Below is a comparative table for the batteries and power supply of smartphones:

Here I would like to note the following:

  1. Wireless charging on a top smartphone should be something that Xiaomi Mi8 cannot boast of;
  2. IPhone battery capacity is approximate based on iphone X data and iphone XS presentation;

Price for iphone XS and Xiaomi Mi8.

Price for Xiaomi mi 8 from 27,500 to 31,000 rubles for the 64gb version

The price for the iphone XS is from 88,000 to 119,000, depending on the amount of memory.

Advantages and disadvantages:

Let's summarize, let's see the pros and cons of both gadgets:

In the smartphone of the Chinese company Xiaomi we highlight the following limitations:

  • Lack of wireless charging;
  • No protection against water and dust;
  • No headphones included;
  • Lack of 3.5 connectors;
  • Low price for a top-end gadget;
  • Good camera and 4K video shooting;
  • Excellent design and finishing materials;

In the smartphone of the North American company Apple from Cupertino we highlight the following limitations:

  • The price of the gadget is incredibly high for the Russian market;

I would like to highlight the following advantages:

  • The most powerful and modern processor, the performance of the device is head and shoulders above the competition;
  • Super camera and new possibilities of photo and video shooting, in the right hands you will get "stunning" materials;
  • Software and hardware work together like a clock.

If Xiaomi's shortcomings are not significant for you, then the unambiguous choice is for Mi8, and if you need to have everything in one gadget at once and money is all vanity, then your choice is the iPhone XS.

More and more often you can hear the following phrase: “I took myself a smartphone for 20,000, in terms of functions - like the last iPhone, and even a bigger screen. Well, yes, no apple in the back. But let the fools pay for the brand. The main thing for me is that the price matches the quality. "

Some praise the owners of Chinese smartphones for their rationality and ability to save. Why isn't a phone that costs three times cheaper actually competing with iPhones and flagships from leading Android manufacturers? In the publication, based on the example of the Chinese brand Xiaomi, popular in Russia, they named the main reasons why you should not save when choosing a smartphone.

1. Marriage

Marriage and total insecurity are natural consequences of a low price tag. On any forum where smartphone breakdowns are discussed, Xiaomi topics are always the longest.

The list of complaints is inexhaustible: broken pixels are often found, the touchscreen stops working regularly (completely), and the speaker falls out after the first landing on the floor. Another problem is the terrible build of the case. For example, all Xiaomi Mi5s initially have a swing volume switch - as if it should be.

On plastic (that is, the most budgetary) Xiaomi smartphones, you can even perform the 24th Caprice of Paganini by clicking on the body in different places. On the one hand, these squeaks are tolerable and clearly not fatal. But if you look at the situation from a different angle, it turns out that popular Asian devices are wildly unstable to falls due to useless assembly.

The chronic marriage of Chinese smartphones is killing the entire philosophy of economy. On average, a flagship Xiaomi gadget for 15-18 thousand rubles withstands a year of active use. Then it turns into a phone that you have to carry around forever for repairs and lay out thousand after thousand.

Conclusion: Talking about the price difference between iPhones and Xiaomi devices becomes meaningless. Yes, the Apple gadget costs two to three times as much, but it also lives two to three times longer.

2. Sheath

Xiaomi seeks to make money not on smartphones (they are given away almost at cost), but on services. These services are built into the MIUI skin, which, in turn, is glued on top of the classic Android. What's bad about it? Many things.

Firstly, Xiaomi completely changes the standard interface. The problem here is not in appearance (although MIUI is too clumsy), but in compatibility with third-party applications. It is enough to install several popular programs from Google Play, and you will see how the interface elements trite bump into each other. For example, the icons in the status bar will be uneven and ugly, and the player widget in the notification center will be simply cut off. For some, these visual ugliness will not cause disgust, but we must admit: in expensive smartphones (in the same iPhone or Google Pixel) there are no such compromises.

Secondly, MIUI has pre-installed applications of disgusting Chinese services. Often these programs are not even translated into Russian. At the same time, Xiaomi really, really wants to get as much user data as possible on its servers, so it always asks to create a Mi-account. These reminders are so annoying that even the most patient users break down and register, just not to see the damned notifications again.

The final drawback is the new Android features, which you can immediately forget about. Even if you install a fresh version of the OS, MIUI will not allow you to take advantage of the upgrade. It is enough to take the current Android Nougat: Xiaomi owners do not have any warning grouping, no quick replies to notifications, no action shortcuts for applications (like 3D Touch in the iPhone, only with a long press). And this is just a short list, in fact, there are much more such unpleasant nuances.

However, the majority of devices are simply not threatened with Android updates. It's even embarrassing to compare Xiaomi with Apple in this parameter. iPhone 5 was released in 2012, and in 2016 received the most current iOS 10. Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 debuted in August 2015, but it did not even get Android 6.0, let alone the seventh version. But almost weekly updates of the MIUI shell arrive, which fundamentally do not change anything.

All this speaks about the different attitude of companies towards customers. Some try for everyone, others - only for those who have a new model.

3. Iron

The worst thing that happened in Xiaomi's history is the transfer of the Redmi Note line from a decent Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor to the cheap MediaTek X20. The savings do not justify themselves: Chinese chipsets often overheat, consume the battery (0% by the middle of the day - easily) and skip clock cycles (smartphones simply slow down). And even an impressive amount of RAM does not save from these phenomena.

The second serious drawback is the cameras, which do not correspond to the top-level even in expensive (by Xiaomi standards) devices. There are a lot of problems: noise throughout the frame, mediocre shooting in imperfect lighting, unnatural color rendition. It's also better not to remember the video - it is recorded in a frankly shameful quality even on expensive models.

Before Sony, HTC or Huawei - as before the Moon. Before Apple and Samsung - like before another galaxy.

What to do?

Prioritize correctly. If you are a fantastically neat user who only needs access to the Internet on a big screen from a phone, then Xiaomi models (and the like) will not let you down. But if you need a camera, power for gaming, a solid body and regular system updates, then it makes more sense to invest in smartphones from manufacturers that do not dump.

Yes, at first glance it is more expensive, but in the long run it is more profitable. Chinese smartphones have eclipsed the A-brands only thanks to the tempting prices and decent specs printed on the box. But the harsh reality puts everything in its place: it is still impossible to buy a full-fledged competitor to the iPhone three times cheaper.

Disputes over who is cooler - the skier or the snowboarder of Apple or Google - arise on the Internet with enviable regularity. At the same time, the parties officially refrain from confrontation, and the opponents are iPhone lovers and Android fans. However, in some cases, official sources also provide food for thought. For example, the Federal Antimonopoly Service recently accused Apple of price collusion with retailers "that sell iPhones at almost the same price." And the international analytical company Blancco called the iPhone 6 the most unreliable phone on the iOS platform. Adding at the same time that in the second quarter of 2016, gadgets with Apple iOS accounted for 58% of refusals, while for Android this figure was 35%. Apple itself responded to this news with silence, and lovers of "apple" products accused the creators of Android gadgets of using "raw" microchips and copying the innovations of the American vendor.

Let's start with the accusations of the Federal Antimonopoly Service, which found almost the same prices for iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in retail chains in Russia. Considering that we are talking about large retailers with a large market share, the situation caused serious concern for the regulator. Inquiries about pricing for Apple products were sent to the retail chains Euroset, Eldorado, Svyaznoy, re: Store, Ozon.ru, Citylink, Media-Markt, Mobilend (Know-how brand) , as well as mobile operators MegaFon and VimpelCom.

Chinese Xiaomi is a relatively recent (since 2010) player on the mobile device market, but its products are already boldly “competing” with venerable competitors. Who will win the iPhone vs Xiaomi flagship clash?

General impression

Both smartphones are of approximately the same form factor - they are not phablets yet, but the diagonal is large - 4.7 vs 5 inches, respectively.
If you compare, putting them side by side, the difference in centimeter is not very striking, but the dimensions of the frames around the display are much smaller in the former. So the useful area of the screen of the "Chinese" is 72.3%, against 65.8% of the "American". And the resolution is higher - 1080 × 1920 vs 750 × 1334 pixels in the iPhone.
At first glance, it should be noted that the Mi4 has features of the previous "apple" series -5 / 5s - the same metal frames at the edges. Given the passion of Asians for inheritance, it is not a sin to chase the best.
iPhone 6 (like 6s) has a more streamlined shape, with rounded ends. The all-metal case on the back blends seamlessly into the display glass. Therefore, the gadget looks completely monolithic.
The devices have anti-reflective and oleophobic coating. So neither the bright sun nor the abundance of fingerprints will prevent you from enjoying a high-quality picture.

Both devices are perfectly assembled, there are no backlashes or creaks, all parts are perfectly matched.

Specifications

In terms of "stuffing" Mi4 slightly surpasses the opponent. So it is equipped with a powerful and fast Snapdragon 801 chip with four cores, manufactured by Qualcomm. Its frequency is 2.5 GHz. The iPhone is equipped with a proprietary dual-core A8 chip with a frequency of 1.4 GHz. The first has 3 GB of RAM vs 1 GB of the second.

But in terms of performance - according to the results of benchmarks, smartphones show comparable results. After all, the key role is played not only by the set of technical characteristics, it is much more important how the system works as a whole.

IPhones have always been famous for their stability, thanks to the iOS shell adapted for "hardware". The same cannot be said for Android devices. But the android gives room for the user - in terms of system settings for himself - he has no equal. Actually, because of this "arbitrariness" most often failures occur. Therefore, there are some problems with the proprietary OS - MIUI (created on the Android platform), which is running Xiaomi. But in general, comparing completely different systems is a thankless task.
As for the amount of internal memory, Xiaomi offers two options - 16 and 64 GB. Apple - for models of similar capacity, also offers a 128 GB smartphone - for true lovers of a variety of content. Slots for external microSD cards are not provided in both devices.

The cameras of the devices are also significantly different. Mi4 is equipped with a six-lens camera with a resolution of 13 MP and an aperture of 1.8, the front one is also quite good - 8 MP. A very interesting execution of the software part of the camera control. You can correct the exposure, change the scale, etc. right in the viewfinder window during shooting. It also displays the gender and age of the people being photographed on the screen.

The iPhone has a 5-lens camera from Sony. Its resolution, by modern standards, is very modest - only 8 megapixels, but the quality of the issued photo and video materials is deservedly considered one of the best in the segment. Effective stabilization and instant focusing - eliminate blur and noise. As for the camera for selfies - 1.2 megapixels - no comment, it should have been improved a long time ago. Which, in fact, is what the manufacturer did in the new 6s line.

On both devices, the pictures come out clear, without unnecessary artificial processing. The iPhone "whitens" the original color a little, and the Mi4 slightly "leaves" in yellow. But overall, the quality is excellent both there and there. The only thing is that Xiaomi loses the comparison when shooting at night, because the iPhone gives out a lot more detail.

The "Chinese" writes videos in a progressive format - 4K (it appeared in iPhones only in the 6s series). It also supports 1080p, which the "sixth" iPhone also has, which creates HP video at a choice of 30 or 60 frames / sec. Both allow slow motion recording.

The Mi4 battery also nominally outperforms its rival - 3080 mAh vs1810 mAh. However, in fact, its less economical system, gluttonous processor and screen require more energy, so the advantage is very small - literally up to several hours in standby mode (it all depends on who uses the gadget during the day). It's still a shame Apple left the battery capacity unchanged with the iPhone 6s.

Prices

The cost of Xiaomi is about 23,500 rubles - for the basic version with 16 GB of internal memory. Offered to order at - store-xiaomi.ru. iPhone 6, with a similar memory baggage, will cost almost twice as much - 44,990.0 rubles (and this is taking into account the traditional reduction in price by a hundred dollars - in connection with the release of the new version of 6s). This is the price of the official "apple" store -www.apple.com/ru, for an unlocked device without a contract. At resellers, you can find options for several thousand cheaper, but still the price tag figure is very high. In this round, the Chinese is clearly winning the iPhone vs Xiaomi competition.

Flaws

Finally, briefly about the shortcomings. Users claimed the low quality of the music played through the Chinese headphones, as well as a little damp software. And the tech support, for obvious reasons, is clearly not comparable to that provided by Apple. Therefore, we strongly recommend buying Mi4 from reliable intermediaries, so as not to suffer from shipment to China and back. Be sure to choose a model with LTE that will work in our latitudes, because after all, the gadget is designed more for the Asian market.
