Downloading windows 10 updates. The update is not available due to antivirus or firewall

Problems can arise in any technical system for various reasons, and therefore user requests are received that Windows 10 is not updated. The nature of the difficulties can be expressed by the complete absence of updates or by stopping their download at a certain stage of the download. Before solving a problem, you need to understand why it has arisen, what is its cause. Then a more effective solution can be found if the root cause is established.

Usually, the problem is manifested by the absence of an invitation to download the update or the code 80240020 appears - an error when updating Windows 10. The latest versions of Microsoft programs were designed in such a way that the update occurs with minimal user intervention and does not affect the operation of the entire server system. Nevertheless, the Windows 10 update error exists, and individual cases confirm this.

Reasons for failures

Updating the software can be from old versions of W7 or W8 and installing new types of W10 itself. Users have problems in either case. Freezing can occur for at least four reasons:

  1. Update not arriving. The Multiple Location Updates feature may be enabled and needs to be disabled because Microsoft has decided that this situation is unacceptable and Windows 10 will not be updated. Disable Path: Update & Security - Advanced Options - Disable. Now you can turn on the search for updates, if required.
  2. There is no automatic update 10586 and 1511. The latest version is downloaded manually in one of two ways: using the Media Creation Tool utility, you can download it without paying from the Microsoft website, launch it and enable the Update now button. Another method involves creating a bootable USB flash drive (disk) using the Windows 10 ISO file. After that, the new version can be overlaid on the old program by clicking "setup.exe".
  3. Windows 7 cannot be updated to 10. That is, the installed program must have Service Pack 1 - without it, the update will not arrive. W7 or W8 must be legal and valid.
  4. Windows 10 update cannot proceed due to a change in Microsoft terms. We are talking about version 10586, how it should be launched. Initially, we followed the recommendation to update manually via the ISO image, but today the rules have changed, and those who did not have time to install W10 should install the RTM version. After completing this step, all new versions are installed with the help of Windows Update.

You can also do without the Update Center by performing the operation manually through the update catalog on the Microsoft page.

Another way is to use someone else's utility, such as Windows Update Minitool.

Resolve error 80240020

First, you should make sure that there is enough space on the server disk with the W7 program to add a new version: there should be at least 16 GB of free space, and in some cases - 50. If there is space, but W10 is not downloaded and the error appears again, then in W7 you must enter the command Wuauclt.exe / updatenow in the Run cell and enable the Enter key. If the source program is W8.1, then you can initiate the command line through Start.

When these steps did not help and the update error 80240020 is displayed again, it is worth trying to download the new version using a utility from Microsoft. After starting the assistant, W10 will start to boot and an installation disc will be created without performing any additional steps.

You can create this disk yourself, for which you need to insert a USB flash drive into the slot and turn on the required file by double pressing the key.

In the window that opens, click "Next", then select the version of the operating system for installation and the method of saving the installation data, it can be a USB flash drive or an ISO file, which can later be transferred to a disk. Now "Next" again. Wait until the files have finished downloading and the installation media has been created, and then press the "Finish" button.

Eliminating Quotes with Windows Utility

If the installation program freezes while downloading the W10 updates, you can try the proprietary Troubleshooter Center utility located in the server's "Control Panel" (troubleshooting) section. In the "System and Security" heading, you need to designate the Update Center Assistant, this will launch the utility and start looking for reasons why updates are not being downloaded. When you press the Next button, some of the fixes will happen automatically, while others will require initiation from the user by confirming the Apply this fix command.

At the end of the check (you won't have to wait long), there will be a report on completed and uncompleted corrections.

After closing the utility window, restart the server and check again if the W10 parameters are updated.

And also on the Control Panel on malfunctions in the cell "All categories" you can get the utility "Background Intelligent Service BITS". Failures in the operation of this service affect the download of updates, the process takes much longer, so it makes sense to run this program too to be sure of the result.

Clear W10 update cache

If the user has repeatedly downloaded updates, then all installation files are automatically cached so that they can be reapplied without additional download. This causes the cache folder to grow in size, resulting in the operating system running slowly and running out of free space on the server's hard drive.

In order to avoid problems, it is suggested to clear the entire Windows Update cache from W10. The system disk cleanup utility is not working 100%, it cannot delete the Windows Update cache completely. But in manual mode, you can do a full cleanup:

  1. Stop Windows Update. To do this, enter the search command "Service" and run the Services application as administrator. Find the service to stop and disable with the right mouse button by clicking "Stop".
  2. Find the folder where the updated W10 files are stored using the C: \ Windows \ SoftwareDistribution \ command. It will work after pressing the Enter key. Now you need to go to the Download folder and delete all files. To complete the operation, press the Continue button.
  3. Now you should go back to the beginning and download the Services application that updates the W10 by pressing the Start key. Verify that the Update utility has loaded.

After these manipulations, you need to close the command line and download the updates again. After clearing the cache, they load much faster.

Updates to the operating system are necessary to keep it in an optimal state for comfortable operation. In Windows 10, the update process itself requires little or no user input. All important changes in the system, which relate to safety or usability, take place without the direct participation of the user. But the chances of problems occurring in any process, and updating Windows is no exception. In this case, human intervention will be necessary.

Problems updating the Windows 10 operating system

All kinds of problems can occur when installing updates. Some of them will be expressed in the fact that the system will immediately need to be updated again. In other situations, the error will interrupt the current update process or prevent it from starting. In addition, an interrupted update may even lead to undesirable consequences and require a system rollback. If your update does not finish, do the following:

And now that your system is safe, it is worth finding out what was the cause of the problem and trying to fix the situation.

Update not available due to antivirus or firewall

Any installed antivirus with incorrect settings can block the Windows update process. The easiest way to check is to simply disable this antivirus for the duration of the check. The actual shutdown process depends on your antivirus program, but usually it is not difficult.

Almost any antivirus can be disabled via the tray menu

Turning off the firewall is a completely different matter. Disabling it forever, of course, is not worth it, but it may be necessary to suspend its work for the correct installation of the update. To do this, do the following:

  1. Press Win + X to open the Quick Access Toolbar. There, find and open the "Control Panel" item.

    Select "Control Panel" from the shortcut menu

  2. Among the other items in Control Panel is Windows Firewall. Click on it to open its settings.

    Open Windows Firewall in Control Panel

  3. On the left side of the window there will be various settings for this service, including the option to disable it. Select it.

    Select "Turn Windows Firewall on or off" in its settings

  4. In each of the sections, set "Disable Firewall" and confirm the changes.

    For each type of network, set the switch to "Disable Firewall"

After disconnecting, try again to update Windows 10. If it is successful, then the reason really was in limiting access to the network for the updater.

Failure to install an update due to lack of space

The update files must be downloaded to your computer before installation. Therefore, you should never fill up hard disk space to the eyeballs. If the update was not downloaded due to lack of space, you need to free up space on your drive:

  1. First of all, open the Start Menu. There is a gear icon that you need to click on.

    From the start menu select the gear symbol

  2. Then go to the "System" section.

    In Windows settings, open the "System" section

  3. There, open the "Storage" tab. In the "Storage" you can track how much space on which disk partition you have free. Select the partition on which you have Windows installed, because this is where the updates will be installed.

    Go to the "Storage" tab in the system section

  4. You will receive detailed information about what exactly is occupied by the space on the hard disk. Study this information and scroll down the page.

    You can find out what your hard disk is doing through the "Storage"

  5. Temporary files can take up a lot of space and can be deleted directly from this menu. Select this section and click "Delete temporary files".

    Find the "Temporary files" section and delete them from the "Storage"

  6. Chances are, most of your space is occupied by programs or games. To remove them, select the Programs and Features section in the Windows 10 Control Panel.

    Select the "Programs and Features" section through the control panel

  7. Here you can select all the programs you do not need and uninstall them, thereby freeing up space for the update.

    Using the "Uninstall or Change Programs" utility, you can remove unnecessary applications

Even a major Windows 10 update shouldn't require too much free space. Nevertheless, for the correct operation of all system programs, it is advisable to leave at least twenty gigabytes of free space on a hard or solid-state drive.

Windows 10 updates won't install

It is good if the cause of the problem is known. But what if the update downloads successfully but fails to install without any errors. Or even the download fails, but the reasons are also unclear. In this case, you should use one of the ways to fix such problems.

Fixing problems with updating through the official utility

Microsoft has developed a special program for one task - fixing any problems with updating Windows. Of course, this method cannot be called completely universal, but the utility can really help you in many cases.

To use it, do the following:

  1. Reopen the control panel and select the "Troubleshooting" section there.

    Open Troubleshoot in Control Panel

  2. At the very bottom of this section, you will find the item "Troubleshoot with Windows Update". Click on it with the left mouse button.

    At the bottom of the Troubleshoot window, select "Troubleshoot with Windows Update"

  3. The program itself will start. Click on the "Advanced" tab to make some settings.

    Click on the "Advanced" button on the first screen of the program

  4. You should definitely choose to run with administrator rights. Without this, there will most likely be no point in such a check.

    Select "Run as administrator"

  5. And then already press the "Next" button in the previous menu.
  6. The program will automatically search for certain problems in Windows Update. The user is only required to confirm their correction in case the problem is actually found.

    Wait until the program detects certain problems

  7. As soon as the diagnostics and fixes are completed, you will receive detailed statistics on the corrected errors in a separate window. You can close this window, and after restarting your computer, try to update again.

    You can examine the fixed issues in the diagnostic complete window

Manual download of Windows 10 updates

If all your problems are related exclusively to the Windows Update Center, then you can download the update you need yourself. There is an official update catalog specifically for this feature, from where you can download them:

Make sure updates are enabled on your computer

Sometimes a situation may arise that there are no problems. It's just that your computer is not configured to receive updates automatically. Check it:

Windows update version kb3213986 is not installed

The cumulative update package for version kb3213986 was released in January this year. It includes many fixes, for example:

  • fixes problems connecting multiple devices to one computer;
  • improves the background work of system applications;
  • fixes many Internet problems, in particular, problems with the Microsoft Edge and Microsoft Explorer browsers;
  • many other fixes to improve system stability and bug fixes.

And unfortunately, errors can occur when installing this service pack as well. First of all, if the installation fails, Microsoft recommends that you delete all temporary update files and download them again. This is done as follows:

Another cause of problems with this update is outdated drivers. For example, an old driver for a motherboard or other hardware. To check this, you should open the Device Manager utility:

  1. To open it, you can use the Win + R keyboard shortcut and enter the devmgtmt.msc command. After that, confirm the entry and the device manager will open.

    Enter the command devmgtmt.msc in the Run window

    Select to automatically search for updated drivers in the next window

  2. If a newer version is found for the driver, it will be installed. Repeat this process for each of the system devices.

After all this, try installing the update again, and if the problem was in the drivers, then you will not face this update error again.

Issues with March Windows updates

March 2017 also saw some update issues. And if you can't install some of the versions now, check to see if they were released in March. For example, an update to version KB4013429 may not want to be installed at all, and some other versions will cause errors in the operation of the browser or video playback programs. In the worst case scenario, these updates can cause serious problems with your computer.

If this happens, then you need to restore the computer. This is not so difficult to do:

Your best bet is to simply not install unstable builds. Now there are many versions of Windows that do not contain critical errors, and the likelihood of problems during their installation is much less.

How to avoid problems installing Windows update

If you encounter problems updating frequently, then perhaps you yourself are doing something wrong. Make sure you don't commit to common violations while updating Windows 10:

Usually the cause of the problem is on the user's side. By following these simple tips, you can avoid critical situations with new Windows updates.

Windows 10 operating system has stopped updating

After some errors appear in the update center, the operating system may refuse to update again. That is, even if you fix the root cause of the problem, you will not be able to re-update.

Sometimes the update error appears over and over again, preventing you from installing it

In this case, you need to use the diagnostics and recovery of system files. This can be done as follows:

Video: What to do if Windows 10 updates won't download

Windows 10 updates often contain important security fixes for this system. Therefore, it is important to know how to install them if the automatic method fails. Knowledge of different ways to fix update errors will come in handy to the user sooner or later. And although Microsoft is trying to make new builds of the operating system as stable as possible, the probability of errors remains, respectively, you need to know ways to solve them.

Windows updates fix vulnerabilities in previous versions of the system, increase the speed of the computer, and often enhance user experience. If they are not installed, then in the future this can lead to errors in the operation of both individual applications and programs, and the OS itself.

Popular difficulties updating Windows 10

Most of all, users are concerned that:

  • Windows 10 update will conflict with their antivirus program;
  • you run out of disk space, especially if the internal storage of the tablet or PC / laptop is small in size (device models in the lower price range).

Antivirus prevents Windows from updating

The impact of antivirus on Windows updates is due to conflicts between third-party antivirus (Kaspersky, ESET Smart Security, etc.) with the Windows Defender component, which was originally built into the OS itself and updated with it.

Timely updating of anti-virus programs and their databases

It is recommended to use the latest versions of antivirus software. For example, Kaspersky software requires versions of Kaspersky Anti-Virus, Kaspersky Internet Security and Kaspersky Total Security 2016 or 2017. In addition, you should remember to keep your operating system up to date in order to avoid failures to install Windows updates.

Keep your antivirus updated regardless of whether it's paid or free

In 2015, Kaspersky Internet Security had the following problems when upgrading Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 or installing KIS 2015 on a ready-to-run Windows 10:

  • 2015 KIS did not work on Windows 10 Phone;
  • KIS did not interact with the Microsoft Edge browser;
  • without the Zero Day Patch component and the Device Guard function, protection against network attacks, advanced heuristics and memory check did not work.

These problems have now been resolved.

It happens that Windows 10 updates are installed successfully, but the antivirus fails. In these cases, it is worth updating it rather than waiting for new updates for your operating system.

Impact of antivirus on Windows 10 firewall settings

Any antivirus can disable the Windows 10 firewall, without which updates will no longer be installed, since the Windows Firewall and Automatic Updates components have been interconnected since the days of Windows XP. But the antivirus can be configured so that it does not add preinstalled applications and Windows system components to the list of blocked programs, including a built-in firewall.

To re-enable the firewall, do the following:

If Windows Firewall is not responding at all, then the Windows Firewall service is disabled. Do the following:

It is also possible that the firewall will turn on only after the complete removal of the third-party anti-virus program.

Drastic measures to resolve the conflict between antivirus and OS updates

If it is not possible to resolve the conflict between antivirus and updates, there are two ways:

  • abandon third-party antiviruses altogether, relying on Windows Defender and OS updates. After all, Windows Defender is already 10 years old, it was developed along with Windows Vista and is intended to complement the Windows firewall that has existed since the days of Windows XP. Since then, it has been modernized and updated several times. Install all cumulative updates and fixes related to getting rid of the user from online threats;
  • go through all anti-virus programs (there are more than a dozen of them), without getting hung up on products from Kaspersky Lab or Avast, and find a conflict-free anti-virus package. This is the most difficult, but also the most advanced way to solve the problem.

Some laptops with Windows Vista installation discs came with MCAfee Virus Scan, a utility that supplemented Windows Defender's capabilities to protect the OS against network attacks, and a general fix pack for Windows Vista. All of these tools are up to date and compatible with Windows 10, give them a try.

Not enough disk space to update Windows

This problem affects tablets and netbooks in the lower price range, which have only 16 or 32 GB of memory (HDD / SSD-small capacity).

64GB and 128GB SD cards and flash drives installed in lower-end PCs surpass built-in storage in terms of volume

As an example - updating Windows 10 to "build" 1607.

Windows 10 updates take a while to download and install

Windows 10 will inform you about the lack of free space and recommend you to “unload” the main drive or connect another one (except the USB-DVD-RW drive).

Windows 10 will not be able to install updates if there is not enough free space on the disk

Windows does not collect outdated updates, cluttering the main disk, but replaces some of them with newer ones, released instead of or in addition to the old ones. At the same time, free space on the main disk can be either freed up or decreased within a small range.

To be able to write all the old system data in case of "rollback", use additional disks and flash drives. Do the following:

You now have a fully working Windows 10 system with patches and additions installed.

The system information contains the version (code) of the update

If the update version code has not changed to the one you updated, then the process was unsuccessful. Look for another reason for rejection.

Windows 10 updates won't install

There are several reasons and varieties of this problem.

Windows updates are downloaded but not installed

Starting with Windows XP, the automatic update setting was reduced to four values:

  • automatic download, but custom (manual) installation;
  • automatic search, but manual download and installation;
  • a complete ban on all actions.
  • The second option is the most irrational. Why download something that will not be installed and will soon become outdated, because service packs are released monthly and consistently, and a significant part of them is defense against online threats. This option should have been removed altogether.

    In Windows 10, you cannot opt out of some updates unless you use Command Prompt, Registry Editor, or the Windows Local Group Policy Editor settings. In the standard settings, called from the main menu, there is only automatic and delayed installation of updates. Do the following:

    Update kb3213986 is not installed

    This is a cumulative update that up-builds Windows 10 build to 14393.223. It is considered obsolete as of July 2017. If this update fails to install, please try its revised and updated version kb3197356.

    If you have problems installing the batch file kb3213986, try its fixed version kb3197356

    Windows 10 users have had cases where the kb3213986 update was installed to 7% and then reset. In older versions of Windows, the incompletely installed batch file would not be completely deleted, which would have to urgently reinstall the system.

    kb3213986 is a continuation of the kb3206632 update, without which it will simply not be possible to install kb3213986. To view a list of installed updates, do the following:

    1. Right-click on the "Start" button and select "Programs and Features" from the menu that opens. Open Windows programs and features to get updates
    2. A window of installed programs will open, click on the link "View installed updates".
      The list of installed updates will allow you to track down the problematic ones.
    3. The window that opens will indicate which updates were installed and when.
      Using the list of successful updates, you can calculate those that failed when they were installed

    That way, you can “hunt down” the problem that caused an update to fail and send that information to Microsoft.

    Whatever the update header code - even kb3213986, even kb9999999 - the problem in half of the cases lies in previous updates installed before the current one. Windows is not just a system, but a system with delicate interconnections that are disrupted due to non-compliance with the sequence of installation of programs and add-ons to them, specified in the description of each of the updates.

    The following measures can help:

    • "Rollback" Windows 10 to one of the previous dates in the calendar of recovery marks;
    • reset Windows 10 to its original settings (those in the .iso image from which the installation was carried out);
    • reinstalling Windows 10;
    • clearing non-installing updates from the cache.

    Try downloading and installing the "wrong" update again. The problem will most likely be resolved.

    Windows 10 March 2017 Update won't install

    Not only Windows 10, but also versions of Windows XP / 2003/8 closed for the "update" were to receive Microsoft update 17–010, developed against the latest sensational virus - the ransomware WannaCry ransomware.

    WannaCry ransomware encrypts all data on the computer and requires a certain amount of money to decrypt it.

    Windows versions not supported by MS17-010 update:

    • Windows 8;
    • Windows XP SP3;
    • Windows XP SP2 64-bit;
    • Windows Server 2008 for Itanium-based Systems
    • Windows Vista;
    • Windows Server 2008
    • Windows XP Embedded
    • Windows Server 2003;
    • Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition.

    If your OS version does not support MS17-010, then there are two ways:

    1. Use update kb4012598.
    2. Change your OS version to any of these:
      • Windows Vista Service Pack 2;
      • Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2
      • Windows 7 Service Pack 1;
      • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1
      • Windows 8.1;
      • Windows Server 2012
      • Windows Server 2012 R2
      • Windows RT;
      • Windows 10;
      • Windows Server 2016.

    Other reasons, as previously noted, are so unique that they can only be solved on the spot with the direct support of Microsoft.

    Windows 10 cannot complete the update

    It happens that the user has downloaded updates, the installation has started successfully, but the attempt to update ended with a "rollback" of Windows due to some errors.

    If the update ended with a Windows rollback, other batch files are required

    Do the following:

    Now, when you repeat the installation of the same update, the crash will disappear.

    Windows 10 has stopped updating

    This could be a software or hardware failure, improper shutdown, or a sudden Windows reset. At the root of the problem is settings corruption due to improper shutdown of the Windows registry, disk errors, etc.

    Fixes Windows 10 Update using a wizard

    Try the standard troubleshooting wizard first.

    1. Follow the path: "Start" - "Control Panel" - "Troubleshooting" - "System and Security" - "Windows Update".
      Windows Troubleshooter Wizard fixes Update Center errors
    2. Run Windows 10 Update.
    3. Click the Advanced button.
      Click on the "Advanced" button to open advanced settings for troubleshooting OS
    4. Make sure auto-fix is active, click on the launch link with administrator rights.
      Troubleshoot as administrator
    5. Wait until the Windows update troubleshooting finishes.
      It may take several minutes or more to troubleshoot your computer
    6. Close the program when it finishes troubleshooting problems.
      Close the Windows 10 Troubleshooter if the issues are resolved

    If that doesn't work, try solving the problem using the "Command Prompt".

    Fixing Windows 10 Update Using Command Prompt

    1. Run Windows Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Enter these commands one after the other:
    3. Register 25–36 DLLs in the registry. Their number can fluctuate depending on the Windows build. If some failed or not found, go to the next one. Each file is opened using the regsvr32.exe registry handler. List of DLL files that need to be registered:
    4. Empty the update cache on drive C by entering the commands "rmdir% systemroot% / SoftwareDistribution / S / Q" and "rmdir% systemroot% / system32catroot2 / S / Q".
      To properly clear the update cache, follow the sequence in which you enter the commands.
    5. Start the previously interrupted Windows 10 update services again by entering the commands:
    6. Reset WinSock (network settings) by entering commands:
      • "Ipconfig / flushdns";
      • "Netsh winsock reset";
      • "Netsh winsock reset proxy".
    7. Close Command Prompt and restart Windows 10.

    Most likely, the very first Windows update will download and install successfully.

    Other Windows 10 update errors

    There are a number of errors that can be corrected using the following methods.

    Error 0xC1900101

    This is a driver installation error with different attributes:

    • 0xC1900101 - 0x20004;
    • 0xC1900101 - 0x2000c;
    • 0xC1900101 - 0x20017;
    • 0xC1900101 - 0x30018;
    • 0xC1900101 - 0x3000D;
    • 0xC1900101 - 0x4000D;
    • 0xC1900101 - 0x40017.

    To solve it you need:

    1. Update all your drivers.
    2. Disable unnecessary devices now.
    3. Check for erroneous (under-installed or not installed at all) devices in Windows Device Manager.
    4. Temporarily remove third-party antiviruses that interfere with the operation of devices for which the driver installation ended with error 0xC1900101.
    5. Maintain drive C (cleanup, defragment, check disk).
    6. Fix Windows 10 system files (installation media needed).

    Errors 0xC1900208 - 0x4000C

    The reason is the presence of programs incompatible with Windows 10 and its latest updates. Remove these questionable applications and try updating Windows again.

    The update is not applicable on this PC

    All (or some of them) important and critical updates were not installed. Check which ones and install them. Try to install this update, most likely, the issue will be resolved.

    Updates installed but not configured

    You need an upgrade code that could not be configured — it is logged in Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. Please refer to this code by submitting a problem claim on the Microsoft Web site.

    Video: Windows 10 update errors with codes and how to fix them

    Whatever the problem with Windows updates, you can deal with them successfully. The main thing is to remember that the more complex the problem, the more complex the approach.

    Despite the popularity of Windows 10, after the release of new system updates, users began to massively complain that the upgrade freezes. Usually the computer stops responding to anything at different stages of the system update. The download is fast, but then the screen freezes - only the update icon continues to spin on the taskbar. Microsoft acknowledged the problem, but there is still no single way to solve it.

    Reasons for freezing Windows 10 update at different stages and get out of the situation

    It often happens that when preparing for installation, the update stops at certain values: 32, 71, 75, 91, 99%. This usually happens for the following reasons:

    • conflict with antivirus software;
    • the drivers that are installed on the computer have not been updated;
    • operating system build below 100041;
    • there is not enough free space on the hard drive.
    Sometimes Windows 10 update freezes due to conflict with antivirus or lack of hard disk space

    Sometimes the update is so slow that it looks like the computer is frozen. If the hard disk activity indicator keeps blinking, it is most likely that the update process is in progress, just very slowly. Usually the user thinks that "everything is gone" in the following moments:

    • by 32% - as a rule, at the 30–39% stage, the system downloads dynamic updates;
    • by 96% - at this time, data backups are created;
    • on the message that the update will be ready soon.

    Outputs for solving freeze problems

    In any case, if you realized that the system is frozen at the update stage and does not respond to any actions, then there are several options for getting out of this situation:

    1. Officially, Microsoft suggests trying to start the PC in safe mode and throw all the data onto one device for storing it (one disk).
    2. The company also suggests rolling back to the previous version of the OS, but this will work if less than 10 days have passed since the start of the update.
    3. Update the OS assembly if its version is lower than 100041.
    4. Updates may hang due to disconnected connections or failures on the Microsoft server. Sometimes there is simply not enough space on the hard disk to install the update, or the computer is infected with a virus that slows down the process of upgrading the system. If the update hangs, the computer needs to be restarted through a power outage or the Reset button, then do a disk cleanup, check the PC for viruses and try to install the update again.
    5. Disable all USB devices, additional monitors, and generally any external devices other than the keyboard and mouse. Remove third-party antivirus software and clean the entire $ Windows. ~ BT. It doesn't hurt to make sure that all drivers installed on your computer have received their update.
    6. You can try to return the Update Center components to their original state. To do this, you either need to run the automatic diagnostics of the "Update Center" and follow the instructions, or restore everything yourself. A detailed guide is available on the official Microsoft website.
    7. If that doesn't work, you can clean boot Windows. It is also advisable to remove programs and applications associated with changing the Windows splash screen, themes and user interface.
    8. If all else fails, a BIOS update will probably be required. This is not a very straightforward procedure and is usually described on the motherboard manufacturer's website.

    What to do if Windows 10 update downloads get stuck

    If the system freezes at the initial stage of downloading the update for Windows, then running the utility to troubleshoot the upgrade may help. It can be downloaded from the Microsoft website, and once launched, you just need to follow the instructions. Most often, the tool fixes errors by itself.

    If your system is stuck downloading updates, running the Windows Update Troubleshooter may help.

    You can also manually clear the update cache. To do this, you need to do the following:

    What to do if preparing to install Windows updates is stuck

    If the system freezes at the initial stage of preparation, then this happens either due to lack of disk space or due to a damaged distribution kit, or in the case of incorrectly set BIOS parameters. If in the first second case everything is solved quite simply (the distribution kit must be downloaded from the official website), then in the latter one should turn off the secure boot mode and, conversely, activate the compatibility mode with other systems.

    To do this, you need to enter the BIOS: to enter there immediately after pressing the power button of the PC, you need to press a key or key combinations depending on the computer model - as a rule, these are Del, F2, F10, Ctrl + Alt + Esc and others (often they are indicated on the very bottom line at the beginning of the launch). In the BIOS in the top menu, you should go to the section in the problems arising in the "Update Center".

    When the system is looking for updates for Windows for an infinitely long time, the problem is usually with the "Update Center"

    In order not to waste a lot of time fixing errors, you can disable it and thereby fix the problem. Here you need to restart the PC, press the Win + R key combination and enter msc in the window that appears. In the window that appears, find the "Update Center", open this item by double clicking and select "Disable". Usually, when you try again, the download of updates starts without problems.

    Unfortunately, there are quite a few situations when Windows freezes at different stages of the update. Fixing them takes time. The main thing is to find out the reason for the freeze and eliminate it, if possible. If all else fails, it's easier to rollback the system to a previous version and wait while Microsoft improves the update mechanism.
