How to disconnect other devices from Wi-Fi. How to block a stranger on your network

In this article, I will talk about Wi-Fi blocking clients connected to the router. Simply put, I will show you how to block a connected device by MAC address in the settings of your router. Or block absolutely all devices, and allow only some to connect. It's not strange that the article is across tp-link router is very popular. It is not uncommon to have to restrict access to the Internet through a router for a device, or completely block it.

Let's take a closer look at blocking devices by MAC addresses on Asus routers, Tp-Link, D-link and Zyxel. In them, this function is implemented, although each manufacturer has its own way. But don't worry, it's not hard to figure it out. Most importantly, you must have access to the router settings. I will not describe here why such a blocking can be useful, there are actually a lot of options. By the way, you can block absolutely any device from connecting to your Wi-Fi: smartphone, tablet, laptop, etc.

Generally, there are two ways in which you can block WiFi clients:

  • block absolutely all devices, no one will be able to connect to your router, and allow only necessary devices (MAC addresses of devices). This method is great for additional protection WiFi networks. Paired with good password, such blocking will make your wireless network very well protected. But, if you often connect new devices, then this is not very convenient, since you will have to register their MAC addresses each time.
  • Well, the second method, which is used most often, is blocking certain Wi-Fi network clients. For example, in your home, 10 devices are connected to the router, and you want to block the Internet (connection) for one of them.

If you want to block a device that is this moment is not connected to your Wi-Fi network, then you need to find out its MAC address. If this mobile device, then you can see it in the settings, usually on the "About device" tab, etc. If you need to find out the MAC address wireless adapter laptop, then in the command line you need to run the command ipconfig /all. Information will appear where the Physical address of the wireless adapter will be indicated. Just do not confuse it with a network card.

Let's take a closer look at the process itself on different routers. Look for the instructions below for your router, and follow the instructions.

Blocking devices by MAC address on an Asus router

Connect to the router, and open the settings at 192.168.1.1. Or, see the details on entering the control panel. In settings go to the tab Wireless networkMAC address filter wireless network .

Opposite point Enable MAC address filter set the switch to position Yes. On the menu MAC address filtering mode you can choose to Reject or Accept. There is an input, devices that we will add to the list. If choose Accept, then absolutely all devices will be blocked, except for those that you add to the list. Most likely you should leave Reject to block only some clients.

The added client will appear in the list. To save, click on the button Apply. The device will be disconnected from your Wi-Fi network and will not be able to connect to it until you unlock it.

To remove the lock, press the button in front of the device Delete (-), and press Apply. At Asus, this function is implemented very simply and clearly. I think you will agree with me.

We block Wi-Fi clients by MAC address on the Tp-Link router

Already according to the standard scheme,. Go to tab WirelessWireless MAC Filtering. Click on the button enable to enable filtering.

By default it will be set Deny, this means that only those devices that you specify will be blocked. If choose allow, then absolutely all devices will be blocked. Click on the button Add new... to add a new device.

In field MAC Address enter the address of the device you want to block.

To see the currently connected devices and their addresses on the Tp-Link router, go to the DHCP - DHCP Client List tab. There you can copy the MAC address of the desired client.

In field Description write an arbitrary name for the rule. On the contrary Status we leave Enabled (meaning the rule is enabled). To save click on the button Save.

The created rule will appear. You can delete it or change it by clicking on the appropriate links next to it. Or, create a new rule for another client.

To unlock the device back, just delete the rule, or edit it, and change the Status to Disabled.

How to disable a Wi-Fi device on a D-Link router?

So, now we will block clients on . We go into the settings at 192.168.0.1. If you are doing it for the first time, or if it doesn’t work, then see the instructions. In the settings, go to the tab WiFiMAC filterFilter Mode. On the menu opposite MAC Filter Restriction Mode, select one of the two options: Allow or Deny.

If you want to block one or more clients, then select Forbid. And if you want to block absolutely all Wi-Fi connections, except for those devices that you add to the list, then select Allow. Click on the button Apply.

Next, go to the tab MAC filterMAC addresses. And choose from the list (devices that are connected) the device we want to block. Or press the button add, and specify the address manually. We press the button Apply.

Added devices will appear in the list and will not be able to connect to your network. You can remove them from the list, or add new ones.

This is how it is set up D-Link routers. Everything is simple, but it's a pity that the device name is not displayed near the address in the list. It's hard to figure out who to block.

Control Wi-Fi clients by MAC addresses on Zyxel

Let's take a look at setting up MAC filtering on ZyXEL devices Keenetic. Go to your router settings. First, we need to register required device in home network. To do this, go to the tab below home network, click on the required device in the list, and click on the button Register.

Next, go to the tab WiFi network, and open the tab at the top Access List. First of all, in the Blocking mode field, select the one that suits you. White list – block all devices except those in the list. Black list- block only those clients who are in the peep.

Select the checkbox for the device you want to block and press the button Apply.

After that, the client will be disconnected from the router and will not be able to connect again.

To remove a device from the black list, just uncheck the box and Apply settings.

That's all the instructions.

It may be that you accidentally block yourself. In this case, go to the settings by connecting to the router using a cable, or from another device, and remove your device from the list. If it doesn't work, you can reset the router settings.

I hope my instructions were helpful to you. Good luck!

Is it possible to add the client's MAC address in routers? WiFi devices in the "white" or "black" list?

Yes, Keenetic series routers support creating an access list by MAC addresses. You can make a "white" or "black" list of point customers WiFi access. In White List mode, access to the home wireless network will be blocked for all clients that are not included in the list. In Black List mode, access to the home wireless network will be blocked only for clients on the list.

1. Before you start setting up access lists by MAC addresses, you need to register the corresponding device in your home network. To do this, connect to the router and go to the menu Home network > Devices.

On this screen, you will see a list of currently connected network devices (both Ethernet cable and Wi-Fi). Click on the entry desired device. In the window that appears, check the box Permanent IP address to this network device appointed permanent IP address, and then click the button Register.

In addition, you can manually add the device to the list of home network devices when it is not connected to the Keenetic. To do this, click the button Add device on the menu Home network > Devices and fill in the fields in the window yourself Registering the device on the network.

2. After registering the device on your home network, you can proceed to create access lists. Go to menu Wi-Fi network > Access list. In field Lock mode You can choose one of three modes: Do not block, White list or Black list.

After selecting the blocking mode (in our example, a White list) next to the desired device, check the box Select and press the button Apply.

Thus, access to the home Wi-Fi network will be blocked for all clients not included in the list (in our example, Wi-Fi access will be allowed only for one device with the specified MAC address).

3. To create a "black" list in the field Lock mode set value Black list, next to the desired device, check the box Select and then click the button Apply.

Now access to the home Wi-Fi network will be blocked only for clients from this list. In our example, the client with the MAC address 14:7D:C5:95:6A:42 cannot connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot. The following messages will be present in the device logs.

A slow internet connection is very annoying, especially when it comes to strangers(neighbors or burglars) who occupy throughput your internet channel. Files take a long time to download, online videos constantly “freeze”, and sites cannot fully load. If the attacker cannot be identified, the only way to get rid of it is to block access to the network. The methods described here will help you get rid of strangers who use your Internet connection.

Steps

Change your wireless network password

For this in address bar browser, enter the IP address of the router.

  1. Find your wireless network settings. The location of these settings depends on the manufacturer and model of the router. Read the documentation for the router (most likely, it can be found on the Internet). Usually, desired settings found under the Wireless, Wireless Setup, or Wi-Fi tabs (or categories).

Change your wireless network password. In the wireless network settings, find the "Wireless Security" section (Wireless Security) or something similar. IN desired section there must be a string with a password (password) to the wireless network; sometimes the password is referred to as "key" (key), "passkey" (access key) or "passphrase" ( key phrase). In this line enter New password and be sure to write it down. Then click Save.

    • Keep in mind that passwords are case-sensitive.
    • Be sure to write down the new password.
  2. Turn your router off and then on again. To do this, you can simply disconnect and connect the power cable to the connector on the back of the router.

Connect to a wireless network. Do this after rebooting the router. Since you have changed your password, you will be the only user who can connect to the internet. Enter a new password to connect to the Wi-Fi network.

Blocking MAC addresses of unauthorized users

Open your router settings. To do this, enter the IP address of the router in the address bar of your browser. If you don't know the address, try one of the following addresses: 192.168.0.1, 10.0.1.1, 10.0.0.1. If specified addresses did not fit, do the following:

    • IN Mac system OS X open apple menu and select " System settings". Click Network and highlight your wireless (Wi-Fi) connection in the left pane. Several IP addresses will be displayed on the screen; desired address look for "Router" in the line.
    • IN Windows system press ⌘ Win + R ; a command line window will open. IN command line type ipconfig and press ⌅ Enter . Find wireless connection(you may have to scroll down or up on the screen to do this), namely the line "Default Gateway" (Default Gateway). This line will display the IP address of the router.
  1. Enter the administrator username and password. If you don't know this information, look for it on the label affixed to the router case. If the username and password are nowhere to be found, contact your ISP.

    • Also, standard names and passwords for many router models can be found at routerpasswords.com.
    • If you have changed the administrator password for the router and have forgotten it, reset the router to its default settings.
  2. Find out who is online. The location of the list of devices that are connected to your network depends on the model and manufacturer of the router. Find the section (tab) "LAN" or "DHCP" and view the list of connected devices or clients. In addition to the attacker, this list will include your computer and, most likely, other devices.

Determine the attacker's MAC address. Any device that is connected to the network has a unique MAC address; if you find out the MAC address of an intruder, you can block him from accessing the network. If any device other than your computer is displayed on the screen, it belongs to an intruder (it may be your device that you forgot to disconnect from the Wi-Fi network, so be careful). Write down the MAC address of the foreign device.

  3. Block the rogue MAC address in the router settings. The location of these settings depends on the manufacturer and model of the router. Find the section (tab) "Firewall Settings" (Firewall Settings) or "Security Settings" (Security Settings). Then find the section "Address Filtering" (Address Filter), "MAC Filtering" (MAC Address Filter), "MAC Access List» (List of allowed MAC addresses) or similar (read the documentation for your router).

    • Enter the foreign device's MAC address. Then click Block or Restrict.
    • Some routers cannot block access, so read your router's documentation if you don't see the sections you need.

Hello friends! Today I will write interesting article. I'll tell you what to do if you find that your WiFi router someone has connected and shamelessly uses your Internet. I will tell you how you can identify and block such a cunning neighbor :). More precisely, I already wrote about how to determine who is connected to your wireless network in the article, but if you have already read my article and found an “illegally” connected device, then I will tell you how you can block it, so to speak, cover up a freebie :).

And before getting into the technical part, I would like to clarify and explain something.

I wrote in the title of the article “how to block a thief”. I used the word “thief” because I couldn’t find another word :), the word “thief” came into my head all the time. In no way do I consider people who use someone else's Internet to be thieves. Unless, when someone else's wireless network is already deliberately hacked, and what kind of thieves they are, they are freeloaders. It's not good to do that.

But excuse me, when, for example, I don’t have a router, and my laptop finds at least one open wireless network, then it’s a sin not to connect to it! I think you agree with me :). By the way, if you do this, then it will be interesting for you to read the article Yes, nothing will happen, connect and use it, since the owner of the network has not closed it with a password. True, perhaps he does not know that his network is open, well, who is to blame here, let him read my blog more often :).

But today I am writing as if from the side of the owners of wireless networks, so let's get back closer to the topic of the article.

Let's start with the fact that if you live, say, in an apartment and your neighbors have laptops, phones, etc., but they do, and you still leave your Wi-Fi network open and want no one to access it connected, then this is a plot from fiction :).

Well, if after such protection, you found that someone else’s device was connected to your Wi-Fi router, then your network was most likely hacked, or they got into your house and stole the Wi-Fi password, or you yourself gave someone a password , and then changed their minds, or ... Come on, that's enough :). In short, in any case, you need to block this device.

And imagine a case, someone connects to your network, and you also have a login with a password to access the router settings, which has not been changed and is the default. This "someone" decides to joke, will take and block your computers :). I'm not kidding. You will have to reset the router settings. How? written in the article And if you have the local network opened through a router? The information on your computers is already at risk.

We block someone else's device connected to a Wi-Fi router

Of course, we will block by MAC address. And by the way, before blocking, change the password for the wireless network itself and for access to the router settings.

If the passwords have been changed, then go to the router settings (I hope you already know how) and go to tab WirelessWireless MAC Filtering.

First you need to enable filtering by MAC address. To do this, click on the button “Enabled”.

Now we only need to add the MAC address of the device we want to block.

The MAC address itself must be viewed on the tab WirelessWireless Statistics, or DHCPDHCP Client List(this tab will also display the device name). Actually, where you found this device. Copy its MAC address right away (use Ctrl+C - Ctrl+V).

Back to tab WirelessWireless MAC Filtering and press the button “Add New…”.

In field MAC Address enter the address of the device you want to block. Near Description you can provide a description for the device. On the contrary Status leave value enable. Click the button Save.

Everything, the device will be blocked. You will see the rule we created. It can be removed or changed by clicking on the appropriate links. Delete And Modify. Or you can create another rule by clicking on “Add New…”.

Of course, the “thief” can change the MAC address and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network. But I hope you changed the password for your network? In extreme cases, you can block absolutely everything MAC addresses and allow only devices whose MAC addresses are registered in the router to connect to the router (good way wireless security). How to do this, I wrote in the article, read from the title “What if the client changes the MAC address?”.

Afterword

Well, that's all, now you know what to do if you find unknown device connected to your Wi-Fi router. Block it and business :). It seems that he wrote everything, did not forget anything.

If you have questions, comments, or additions, then write. Let's try to decide. It will be good if you leave a question on our forum, which by the way is already working and waiting for new members :). Good luck!
