Hot keys (buttons): BIOS boot menu, Boot Menu, Boot Agent, BIOS Setup. Laptops and computers

Do you want to boot your computer from a flash drive or disk? To do this, it is not necessary to enter the BIOS settings. Especially if you don't understand much about it. After all, there is an easier way. In this case, it is enough to enter the Boot Menu and change the device boot priority. This is done in 10 seconds. And most importantly - no shamanism in the BIOS.

What do users usually do to reinstall Windows? As a rule, they record a licensed digital copy on, and then execute .

Boot Menu (or boot menu) is an extremely useful BIOS option. With it, you can quickly set the device boot priority. Simply put, launching the Boot Menu brings up a small window in which you can immediately put a USB flash drive (or DVD drive) in first place, and a hard drive in second. In this case, you do not need to enter the BIOS.

Also, changing the settings in the Boot Menu does not affect the BIOS settings. That is, this option works once - for one inclusion. And when you restart your PC, Windows will boot from your hard drive (as usual). If you again need to start installing Windows from a USB flash drive, call the Boot Menu again.

If you remember, when changing the settings in the BIOS, you had to go into it again and change the device boot priority back (that is, put the hard drive in first place). And in the case of the Boot Menu, this is not necessary.

How to call the Boot Menu

It is very simple - to click one key when Windows boots. Which one? It depends on the:

  • BIOS version;
  • motherboard;
  • laptop models.

That is, the situation is exactly the same as with the BIOS. For example, in order to, you need to press the Del or F2 button, and to open the Boot Menu, you need to click another.

Most often it is Esc or F12. Although, as mentioned above, the call button may differ on different PCs.

Therefore, below we will look at how to launch the Boot Menu on popular brands of laptops and personal computers.

How to enable Boot Menu on Lenovo laptops

Owners of Lenovo laptops should not have any difficulties. After all, the Boot Menu on Lenovo is launched very simply - by pressing the F12 key when loading Windows.

Plus, on the body of many models there is a special button with a curved arrow. You can click it if you want to choose additional. download options.

Run Boot Menu on PC with mat. Asus motherboard is easy

You must press the F8 key when it boots up (at the same time that you normally enter the BIOS).

And with Asus laptops there is a bit of confusion. It seems that the manufacturer is the same, but there are several buttons for launching the Booth Menu. After all, the launch of the Boot Menu on Asus laptops is carried out using one of two keys:

Most often this is the Esc button, although it can be F8. However, there are only 2 keys.

The boot menu on Acer is opened by pressing the F12 button

But there is one small nuance here. The fact is that usually the launch of the Boot Menu on Acer laptops is disabled. And when you press F12, nothing will happen. To make it work, you need to do the following:

  1. Enter the BIOS (when booting the laptop, press the F2 button).
  2. Go to the "Main" tab.
  3. Look for the line "F12 Boot Menu" and change the value "Disabled" (off) to "Enabled" (on).
  4. Save the changed settings and exit the BIOS.

The system will reboot and you can enter the boot menu on your Acer laptop using F12.

How to enable Boot Menu on Samsung laptops

On Samsung, you need to press the Esc key. But Samsung laptop owners need to know one thing. The fact is that to call the Booth Menu, you need to click the Esc button once! If you press twice, the window will simply close.

Therefore, you will have to get used to it in order to know exactly when to press the Esc key. Although there is nothing complicated here - just a couple of attempts.

HP also has its own specifics

Launching the Boot Menu on HP also has its own specifics. After all, the opening of the Booth Menu is carried out somewhat differently.

  1. When you turn on Windows, immediately press the Esc key.
  2. The launch menu will be displayed - press the F9 button.
  3. Ready.

After that, the boot menu of the HP laptop will open, and you can set the priority for turning on devices (using the arrows).

Boot menu on Windows 10 or 8

If Windows 8 or Windows 10 is installed on a PC or laptop, then you most likely will not be able to turn on the Boot Menu.

The fact is that these operating systems have a small feature - by default they have "Quick Startup" enabled, so they do not turn off completely. This is called hibernation (something like sleep mode). Therefore, when loading a PC or laptop, you will not be able to open this menu on Windows 10.

You can fix this in three ways:

  1. Hold Shift when turning off your laptop or PC. After that, it will turn off normally (in the usual sense of the word). And then you can run it on Windows 10 by pressing the desired key.
  2. Instead of shutting down the PC, you can restart it. And at the moment of switching on, just press a certain key corresponding to your brand of laptop or motherboard.
  3. Turn off the Quick Start feature. For this:

That's it - now you can easily enter the Boot Menu on Windows 10 or Windows 8.

For your convenience, below is a screenshot showing the keys to launch the Boot Menu for popular laptops and PCs.

For example, for computers running on the mat. MSI board is the F11 button. And launching the Boot Menu on Sony VAIO laptops is done using F12. In general, you will figure it out yourself - the table is simple and understandable.

Also, for convenience, buttons for entering the BIOS are written. If for some reason you cannot open the Boot Menu, you can always change the device boot priority in the standard way - through BIOS.

Do you want to know how to enter a special boot menu BOOT, computer or laptop?

To boot from a flash drive or CD - DVD disc?

In this article, you will learn how to do it right.

When we do a clean install of Windows, we need to boot not from the hard drive, but from another medium.

This is either a CD - DVD disc, or a flash drive.

Usually, this is done by entering the BIOS of a computer or laptop.

This is exactly what we did in previous lessons.

We went into BIOS and changed the boot order of devices.

It is at this step that approximately 90% of users who want to reinstall Windows stop.

They cannot enter the BIOS and make the necessary settings there.

There is an alternative way to select a boot device.

This is the BOOT menu. The BOOT menu is easier and more convenient than entering the BIOS.

The essence of the BUT menu is to press a certain key when loading a computer or laptop.

This will bring up a menu like this:

In this menu, we can select any device and immediately boot from it.

Let's take a closer look at this.

I connected a bootable flash drive to my laptop. On my laptop, the Escape key is responsible for entering the Boot menu.

I pressed the Escape button, hold it down and, at the same time, turn on the laptop with the button. The Boot menu opened in front of me.

With the cursor keys, up and down, I select the desired device. In this case, it's a flash drive.

As soon as the desired device is selected, I press the Enter key.

Ready! I booted from the flash drive and now I can start installing Windows.

So, to enter the BOOT menu, you need to press one key when you boot your computer or laptop.

As in the case of the BIOS, the BOOT menu keys differ depending on the manufacturer and brand of your laptop or computer.

The most common keys are:

F12, Esc, F11, F9 and F8

Boot menu has significant advantages over BIOS.

1. Boot menu is simpler, it can be used faster.

2. You do not need to understand complex BIOS settings and change them. Let me remind you that there are settings in BIOS that, by changing which, your computer or laptop will stop booting at all. Using the Boot menu you will avoid this.

3. No need to return the BIOS settings back to their original state.

Of course, the Boot menu has its own peculiarities.

If you have Windows 10 or Windows 8.1, then to enter the BOOT menu, I recommend using a computer restart instead of shutting down. The fact is that in these operating systems, the so-called Quick Start is activated by default.

Quick Start makes it so that when you shut down the computer does not turn off, in the usual sense of the word. He falls asleep, or rather enters hibernation.

Therefore, when you enable it, it will not give you the option to enter the Boot menu. It will simply wake up and show you the state it was in when you pressed the shutdown button.

The solution is very simple: use reboot instead of shutdown.

Let's see how it's done:

So, my laptop is turned on, Windows is loaded, the bootable flash drive is connected. Now I enable reboot.

I just click on the Start button, click the Shut down button and click Restart.

Once the BOOT menu is in front of us, we can start installing Windows.

Fast startup can be turned off completely. And then you can use the Boot menu as usual when you turn on the computer.

The setup is very simple, I'll show you how to do it now. Quick Start is turned off through the classic Control Panel. In Windows, it can be opened through the search. Just enter in the search the word: panel. As soon as the Control Panel icon showed up in the search results, I simply press the Enter key.

In the Control Panel, you can switch from categories to icons. Or you can just search through the search Power supply.

On the left we have Power. We click on it.

Here we need a button Actions of the power buttons. We click on it. To unlock the settings that are not active, you need to click, as shown in the picture. Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Now we can turn off Fast Startup (Quick Boot), just uncheck the box. Then we save the changes.

After that, the Boot menu will be available to you when you boot.

In Windows 8.1, the setup is done in the same way.

One more feature.

In some fancy BIOSes and not so fancy ones, there is a menu item that disables the BOOT menu.

More about this in the video.

If your BIOS has such an item, then you will have to go into the BIOS and turn on the BOOT menu once. That is, activate this item.

After that, the BOOT menu will be available to you when you boot.

From the table, you can find out which keys you need to press on your PC or laptop to enter the BOOT menu.

Good day everyone!

Why memorize something you don't need every day? It is enough to open and read the information when you need it - the main thing is to be able to use it! I usually do this myself, and these keyboard shortcuts are no exception ...

This article is for reference, it contains buttons to enter the BIOS, to call the boot menu (it is also called the Boot Menu). Often they are simply "vital" when reinstalling Windows, when restoring the computer, setting up the BIOS, etc. I hope the information will be relevant and you will find the treasured key to call the desired menu.

Note :

  1. The information on the page will be updated and expanded from time to time;
  2. You can see the buttons for entering the BIOS in this article (as well as how to enter the BIOS in general :)):
  3. At the end of the article, examples and explanations of abbreviations in the table, decoding of functions are given.

REFERENCE (on the above tables)

BIOS Setup (also Enter Setup, BIOS Settings, or simply BIOS)- this is the button to enter the BIOS settings. You need to press it after turning on the computer (laptop), and it is better several times until the screen appears. The name may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer of the equipment.

Boot Menu (also Change Boot Device, Popup Menu)- a very useful menu that allows you to select the device from which the device will boot. Moreover, to select a device, you do not need to enter the BIOS and change the boot queue. That is, for example, you need to install Windows - you press the button to enter the Boot Menu, select the installation USB flash drive, and after rebooting, the computer will automatically boot from the hard drive (and no extra BIOS settings).

An example of a Boot Menu is an HP laptop (Boot Option Menu).

D2D Recovery (also Recovery)- Windows recovery function on laptops. Allows you to quickly restore the device from a hidden partition of the hard drive. To be honest, I personally do not like to use this function, because. recovery in laptops is often “crooked”, it works clumsily and it is not always possible to select detailed settings “how and what” ... I prefer installing and restoring Windows from a bootable USB flash drive.

Easy Flash - used to update the BIOS (do not recommend for beginners ...).

System Information - system information about the laptop and its components (for example, this option is available on HP laptops).

PS

For additions on the topic of the article - thanks in advance. Your information (for example, the buttons to enter the BIOS on your laptop model) will be added to the article. All the best!

Out of habit, or out of ignorance, some computer and laptop users use the BIOS or UEFI menu to boot from a device that contains the Windows installation files, to launch a LiveCD, or a system backup. But for this you can use the Boot Menu, especially since this option is more practical and simple. It is enough to call the menu with a special key and select the device (hard disk, USB flash drive, DVD drive) from which the boot will be performed.

You can learn how to enter the Boot Menu on laptops and computers from this guide.

Since manufacturers do not have a specific rule for assigning a button to call the Boot Menu, each of them chooses the one that they think is ideal for this task. This manual lists the keys that, in most cases, allow you to display the boot menu. In addition, the nuances of calling it on laptops with pre-installed Windows 10 are mentioned here, and examples are specifically given for laptops from Asus, Lenovo, Samsung and others, as well as motherboards from Gigabyte, MSI, Intel, and so on.

General information on entering the BIOS boot menu

Both for entering the BIOS or UEFI, and for calling the Boot Menu, manufacturers provide special keys. In the first case, this may be Del, F2, or a combination Alt+F2. The second one can use Esc, F11 or F12, but there are exceptions, which are given later in the article. Usually, the Boot Menu key prompt is displayed on the screen during computer startup, but this does not always happen.

Features of loading Boot Menu on Windows 10

On Windows 10 laptops and computers, the above keys may not work. This is because the shutdown in this operating system is not exactly one. This process is more like hibernation. Therefore, when using F12, F11, Esc and other boot menu keys may not appear.

In this case, one of the methods below can help to enter the Boot Menu:

How to call Boot Menu on Asus

In the case of Asus motherboards, the Boot Menu can be entered using the key F8 immediately after turning on the computer. Actually, as when trying to enter BIOS or UEFI with the keys Del / F9. On ASUS laptops, one of the options can be used - entering the Boot Menu with the key F8, or Esc.

How to enter the Boot Menu on Lenovo laptops

On almost all monoblocks and laptops from Lenovo, the key is responsible for launching the Boot Menu. F12. It, like on other devices, must be pressed when turned on. There are also models where a separate small button with an arrow is provided to enter the boot menu. Often it is located near the power button.

How to open Boot Menu on Acer laptops

Acer laptops and monoblocks have a single key to enter the Boot Menu - F12. However, you can enter this menu only after enabling the special option. To activate it, you need to get into the BIOS when you start the computer using the key F2 and change state Disabled on the Enabled opposite the item F12 Boot Menu in the main BIOS settings.

Other models of laptops and motherboards

Below is a list of keys for entering the Boot Menu on laptops and PCs with motherboards from different manufacturers.

Motherboards:

  • Gigabyte - F12.
  • MSI-F11.
  • Intel - Esc.
  • As Rock - F11.
  • American Megatrends - F8.

Laptops and monoblocks:

  • HP - F9, or Esc, and then the F9 key.
  • Dell - F12.
  • Samsung - Esc.
  • Sony-F11.
  • Toshiba-F12.
  • Packard Bell - F12.

Sometimes there is a need to call the boot menu when starting the computer - the boot menu. This is necessary in cases where it is necessary to boot the PC from any media (CD, flash drive, internal or external hard drive, etc.), for example, to install or reinstall the operating system. In this manual, you will learn how to enter the Boot Menu from a desktop computer or from a laptop.

I want to note right away that in old computers with antediluvian motherboards, the Boot Menu is not provided. In this case, in order to boot from any other device, you need to go into the BIOS of the computer (usually the Del or F2 key is responsible for this, rarely F1) and set the desired device boot order in the Boot section.

On different motherboards, this is done in different ways, however, the word Boot will be present in the name of such a section.

To call the boot menu, you need to almost immediately after turning it on also press a special key on the keyboard. Usually these are the Esc keys or F11, F12. But there are exceptions depending on the manufacturer of the motherboard of a personal desktop computer or laptop. When you turn on the PC on the screen below, you can see which key is responsible for calling the BIOS, Boot Menu, etc.

How to Enter the Boot Menu on Windows 8 and 10 Systems

If you have a laptop and a system up to and including Windows 7 is installed on it, then getting into the Boot Menu will not be difficult at all. As I said already, this can be done with the Esc, F11 or F12 keys. However, if you have Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 installed, then getting into the boot menu in a quick way is not always possible. This is because, starting with Windows 8, shutdown or reboot is not complete. Such a shutdown is more like hibernation, therefore, pressing the hot keys responsible for calling the boot menu may be ineffective. To turn off the computer completely in new operating systems, you can use one of the following methods:
1. When turning off the computer, press the Shift key.
2. You can disable fast startup in the "eighth" system like this: go to the Control Panel,

select the "Power" section,

On the left side of the window, click on "What the power buttons do".

We find the item "Enable fast startup" and deactivate it. By the way, the same actions can be done on mobile PCs (laptops, netbooks).

How to enter the Boot Menu on a Lenovo laptop

To get into the device boot menu on Lenovo laptops, you need to press the F12 button. Also on many computers from this manufacturer you can find a service button with an arrow, as shown in the image below.

This key is used to call the service boot options. Here you can go to BIOS, Boot Menu, perform emergency system recovery, and so on, it all depends on the brand of the device.

How to get into the boot menu on an Acer laptop

If you own an Acer laptop, then use the F12 key to open the Boot Menu. However, there is one point: on many laptops, the ability to call the boot menu in the BIOS settings is disabled. This can be fixed: when you turn on the laptop, press the F2 key in order to get into the BIOS. Let's go to the Main section and activate the item "F12 Boot Menu" (should be in Enabled mode).

After that, we save the settings by pressing the F10 key and confirming. Now, when you turn on the Acer laptop, press the F12 key and see the boot menu.

How to enter the Boot Menu on an Asus laptop

It just so happened that on older models, the F8 function key is used to call the boot menu. As for the new laptop models from Asus, you need to press the Esc key to call the Boot Menu. If you don’t know the old laptop or the new one, then try at startup, first, press F8, and then, if it doesn’t work, press Esc when you turn it on again.

If you need to enter BIOS on Asus laptops, press Del or F9.

If you own a laptop from another manufacturer, then see the table below, which lists popular laptop companies with call keys for both the Boot Menu and BIOS.

I think that now, after reading this manual, you can easily get into the boot menu on any desktop computer or laptop from any manufacturer. That's all, thanks for your attention.
