Bushcraft lovers, professional tourists and experienced travelers have already gained experience in hiking and, based on their own experience, know what electronic and electrical devices can and should be taken with them to places. For everyone else, we decided to write about this in more detail.

Hiking conditions influence the choice of devices

Before moving on to choosing the optimal devices, it is necessary to identify the conditions in which these trips take place. We will take a week-long trip as a basis, since a three-day walk can hardly be called a serious hike, and staying in the wild for more than ten days is more likely to be at the level of professional expeditions. Accordingly, in the latter case, the level of training will not be user-specific, but professional, which means that each expedition has its own set of tools depending on the level of complexity and assigned tasks.

So, to simplify the task, let’s take as a basis a week-long hike in a group of three to five people. It should be noted that a group must be present - not everyone can go into the wilds alone for a week. Such a person must be a professional survivalist, and in this case he also knows what to take with him on a hike.

Now about the hike. From the city, it is most often seen as a kind of romantic adventure with a fun stroll, bonfires, clear daytime skies and bright night stars and a full moon, the giant core of which hangs over the horizon and illuminates all the surroundings for many kilometers around.

In fact, a city person finds himself in a situation where he will have to carry dozens of kilograms of cargo over rough terrain, most often not in a straight line, overcoming various obstacles - ponds, rivers, windbreaks, hills, slush, sand, etc. P. That is, get ready for fatigue.

In addition, clear skies easily give way to storm clouds. The moon turns out to be a small crescent that does not give any light. And the wind will hit you in the face, and it will definitely blow towards the movement. Rain will soak all your things that aren't sealed, and when the sun comes out, it will dry everything out or won't be visible through the treetops. And also these annoying insects, fog, dew, dropsy rubbed on the legs out of habit...

I am describing all this not in order to scare anyone away from hiking, but in order to present a possible scenario from which no one is safe. Accordingly, we will select electronics for conditions that are very far from home, office or hotel.

Basic criteria for choosing electronics

Protection. After all of the above, it should become clear to everyone: the first and main criterion for choosing camping electronic and electrical devices should be their reliability and reliability in all situations and weather conditions. For example, since GPS and GLONASS are more understandable to modern users to indicate the cardinal directions than the location of moss on a tree, the navigation device must be as secure as possible. At a minimum, it must comply with the international electrical protection standard IP65, or IP66, IP67 and IP68. Read what these standards mean in our “” section. You can also read there about the security standards for gadgets for the American army and NATO countries Mil-Std-810G. If the device meets these standards, then you have in your hands an electronic device that is invulnerable to shock, mechanical damage, electrostatic discharge (lightning), salt fog and other types of aggressive environmental influences.

Autonomy. A powerful battery or the ability to change batteries should be the second important criterion. If the battery quickly loses its capacity, then soon you will have in your hands an absolutely useless piece of plastic with internals that include some of the elements of the periodic table in the form of non-functioning boards, connections, contacts, etc.

Energy efficiency. Even if your device has a powerful battery, it will not be worth anything if the processor, display, etc. are very power hungry. Therefore, you should not take electronics with the maximum level of performance on a hike. To solve the vast majority of problems, mid-level characteristics are sufficient.

Performance. When we talk about energy efficiency, we don't mean that you need to go to extremes. For example, if you take a five-year-old smartphone with a new battery and a weak processor on a hike, solving problems will be more complicated and slower, and energy consumption will increase, including due to the long-lasting display. In general, we are looking for a “golden mean”.

Electronics functionality

Now you need to figure out what functions and specific devices you will need on your trip. Opinions may differ here. Some users prefer to use multi-functional devices, arguing that one secure gadget is better than half a dozen different ones, including for weight reduction. Others say no less rightly that if such a device fails, not only communication with the “mainland” will be at risk, but also the life of the tourist. In this case, everyone chooses for themselves which recommendation to use, and we will analyze both options.

Multi-functional device. In fact, there are not so many devices that offer all the functionality you need on a hike (for more details, see our sub-heading at “devices - ...”). Among the main functions, in our opinion, the following should be mentioned:

Navigation (GPS and a-GPS);
Cellular communications and Internet;
Radio communications;
Camera;
Powerful battery;
Weather station (includes a series of sensors);

For hiking. If we assume that it is better to take several different electronic devices, each of which, accordingly, can perform its functions better than one multifunctional device, then a set of such portable equipment may look different. As an option:

Navigator;
Cellular telephone;
Walkie-talkie (within 400 – 470 GHz);
Tablet PC (for the Internet and photo processing);
Action camera;
Portable external battery or charger (solar panel, wind generator, hydro generator, thermal generator, manual generator, etc.);
Portable weather station (similar to National Geographic sensors).

But other options are also possible here. For example, instead of having separate telephones and walkie-talkies, you can use one telephone that includes the walkie-talkie. Or instead of a tablet and a walkie-talkie - one, etc. But most often, an action camera and a navigator are added to one smartphone, which includes a walkie-talkie, GPS and weather sensors - that’s a total of three devices. This will allow you not to be left without navigation or a camera if one of the devices fails, since a navigator and camera, albeit with less capabilities, are present in the functionality of almost every smartphone.

There is also an option when the group shares responsibilities. In this case, each participant must be provided with at least personal radio communication (standard 3 - 5 km on flat terrain), but only one or two people can take a navigator, camera and mobile phone with them. That is, the group as a whole will be provided with everything necessary for a safe return to the fold of civilization, or at least guaranteed to be able to report an emergency to rescuers in the event of a failure of one device.

Autonomy on the go

Since we are talking about a seven-day trip away from people, to ensure the functionality of the devices, it is necessary to take care of filling the batteries of portable devices with energy. This will be useful for both electronics and lighting equipment - flashlights.

Of course, you can simply take a capacious 100 Ah (100,000 mAh) battery with you on a hike. This will add a couple of extra pounds to one of your backpacks, but will provide a week's supply of energy. But the Drobak is not a protected charger, and can easily fail in unfavorable weather conditions, or if the “same” backpack suddenly falls into the water while crossing.

Another option is to take or. There are already quite a lot of such chargers on the market; you can read about them in our section at “Devices - Chargers”. Also interesting are those that release energy while cooking camp food over a fire. In any case, you need to worry about guaranteed charge replenishment in advance.

Finally

The only thing I would like to add at the end is that if there are women or children in your group, it is best to take with you a GPS tracker or other device with the “ ” function. The absence of such a function can put people’s lives at risk in the event of unforeseen situations - deteriorating health or weather conditions, injuries, disasters, etc. Don't neglect the safety of your loved ones!

We hope our review will help novice tourists choose the optimal device (or several devices) for hiking. The criteria presented here may vary from traveler to traveler and depend on personal preferences, experience, objectives and the degree of distance of the route from civilization. Additions and clarifications in the comments are welcome.

Have a safe journey and an easy return home!

Review of the electronics that can be found in my backpack. Of course, all these things do not necessarily have to happen at once, but there is such a possibility.

Here's a quick overview of everything, some items will have separate reviews.

The top row contains power supplies, chargers and batteries.

Solar battery Anker PowerPort Solar Lite

Power 15W. 2 USB outputs. It works reliably, unlike the Chinese/Russian counterparts that I had. Choose batteries that are at least sized. The batteries built into Powerbanks are junk by definition due to the size of the solar cells.

Weight 47 grams.

Power bank - AA/AAA charger ROBITON MobileCharger

Photo with cover removed

A very cool universal item.

Using it, I can charge equipment from a USB cable (the device has one USB output) from 4 AA or AAA elements. It doesn't matter about batteries or accumulators. I take batteries with me, and in a pinch I can buy batteries on the road. And charge your phone!

Since I use batteries, this device can charge them (there is a micro USB input on the device).

Midland GXT 1050 Walkie Talkie

LPD channel radio. Powered by 4 AA and more energy efficient compared to Baopheng UV-5R.

Here's the rear view with the lid open.

It was not by chance that a piece of polyethylene ended up in the frame. It is an important part of the kit 🙂 The fact is that, due to its compactness, it is often convenient to transport a walkie-talkie with batteries already inserted into it, but in a backpack it can accidentally turn on and the batteries/accumulators will run out. A piece of a bag inserted between any of the contacts solves this issue. Before you start using it, taking it out is a matter of a couple of seconds.

Weight: 276 grams with 4 AA batteries.

Android phone

Backup navigator using the Locus app. Well, the Internet is everything to us. From transport schedules to weather, there seems to be nothing new here.

I didn’t find any point in buying a waterproof, shockproof Android phone with a large battery. It doesn’t solve the issue of long battery life, but it adds weight and volume in your pocket. At the same time, it costs three times more and is also obsolete. I just wear a phone cover in which I can use my phone without taking it out.

Weight: 166 grams.

Philips Xenium X1560 dialer

Two SIM cards, a 2900 mAh battery in a device that doesn’t even have a camera. I had this phone in network search mode for almost three weeks in the mountains. I just don't turn it off when I'm hiking.

In addition, it has a USB output that can be used to charge other phones.

In general, this is a small Powerbank with a telephone function :)

Weight: 117 grams

Globalstar Satellite Phone

For those places where there is no cellular network. In Moscow and near the Arctic Circle it worked perfectly, the interlocutor can be heard clearly as in a mobile phone.

The phone is charged from its own charger from a 220V network or from USB using a special wire.

I will also write a separate review after the season.

Weight: 202 grams.

Satellite tracker SPOT 2

I got it before my satellite phone, because... was cheaper. Now I wear it because of the function of broadcasting the track to a map, which anyone with the necessary link (in the Contacts section on the site) can see where the group is at the moment. Relatives of the participants feel calmer. Yes, and it is waterproof.

Unfortunately, the device is powered only by expensive lithium batteries. You have to carry a supply of them just in case (seen in the photo in the title). The new Gen 3 tracker model works with both batteries and AAA batteries.

Weight with case: 139 grams

UPD: I have already bought the next model SPOT Gen 3. It runs on 4 AAA, including batteries. The battery charge lasts for a hike of a couple of weeks. I haven't tested it further.

Wires. USB - micro USB. Several pieces of different lengths

Actually, all power, charging and information transfer come from them.

In the third row there are various useful things most often found among tourists

Headlamp FENIX HL30

Luminous flux up to 230 lumens. IPX6 water protection standard (protection from waves and rain).

Powered by two AA.

Weight 134 grams with batteries.

Read about what to look for when choosing a flashlight.

Camera Olympus Tough TG-2

Supposedly waterproof and shockproof. I sank one in the depths, broke the other, but the last one works. Olympus refused to assemble one of the two. It only runs on its own battery, which usually lasts me the entire trip. As a last resort, I’ll charge with a frog (universal charger)

Weight 236 grams.

Satellite navigator Garmin etrex 30

I wrote more about Garmin satellite navigators. In a nutshell, this is a device with protection against immersion in water to a depth of up to a meter (IPX7 standard) and powered by two AA batteries. You can write a track forever and never get lost.

In the photo, I placed a micro USB female - mini USB male adapter next to the navigator. This adapter allows you not to carry a separate cord for the navigator, but using a universal micro USB to transfer tracks downloaded to your phone to the device (the phone must be able to detect external devices as flash cards and, possibly, have a separate card reader).

Weight 166 grams with batteries.

Wristwatch

All the wonderful electronics either sit down, or sit down, or in a seal in a backpack, and the watch, bought 7 years ago at Decathlon for 300 rubles, will never let you down. It is more convenient to determine the time of walking and halts using the watch on your wrist. Alarm clock in the morning, screen backlight. What else does? And you can swim in them.

Weight: 46 grams

Everything that is afraid of water is carried in herms. For example, this one from Splava, a walkie-talkie in Germany from aliexpress.

You can join my hikes through the group on VKontakte.
