How to set up smartphones and PCs. Informational portal

Experts criticized Avast's SafeZone browser and the built-in Steam browser.

  • Updated Avast SafeZone browser for safe shopping and surfing on the "unknown" Internet;
  • Avast EasyPass is no longer paid and is part of the entire product line (it was renamed Avast Passwords);
  • Once again, the development team is changing the program interface, now it looks like programs for tablets and smartphones. Nevertheless, the appearance of the settings remained approximately the same compared to the 2015 version;
  • Improved home network security function;
  • Installation and uninstallation of the product is much faster than the previous version;
  • Now you can send messages to technical support about errors or ideas for improving products directly from the program interface.

What was added recently in the latest builds of the 2015 version, and smoothly passed into the 2016th version:

  • The HIPS module (intrusion prevention system and control of suspicious activity by analyzing behavior) has appeared. This functionality was previously in the file screen, but now the developers have called it in the form of well-known terminology. So far, this module does not have many settings, like competitors, and works in automatic mode;
  • Avast Grimefighter has changed its name to Avast CleanUp and now does not require a restart to scan a PC for performance problems. Scanning is free, but treatment is paid and for additional money.

Note # 1: There may be issues with signing in to your Avast account when using Avast Cleanup.

Note # 2: When you run smart scan, the scan results for network threats may not be displayed.

How to install

If you constantly use only new beta versions of Avast, then you can update the program to the new version from the antivirus itself: go to Settings, then Update, then Update the program. If you do not use the default beta versions, but want to try the program, you can install them using the links:

Avast Passwords

In fact, this is Avast EasyPass, which became free for users of the Avast home line. Now the program is integrated into the Avast 2016 interface. This function is designed to store all your passwords in one secure place and manage them. There is a function for generating passwords. In order to use the functionality, it is enough to remember just one password to access Avast Passwords (you don’t need to make it simple, use uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and other symbols - the advice is universal for creating any password). Among the functionality, it is also worth noting that you can set up autocomplete forms on various sites.

Note # 1: in the available beta version, Avast Passwords does not yet work with the native Avast SafeZone browser, which will be discussed below in this article.

Note # 2: Be careful not to enable password sync on other devices. It works, but there is a bug in this version of the "beta" - after the loss of the first device on which you started synchronization in your account, your account may be blocked. That is, it is better not to enable password synchronization at all yet. (It is disabled by default in the antivirus settings).

Note # 3: The Avast Passwords extension for Internet Explorer does not work correctly, and also cannot be installed at all on its 64-bit version.

Updated browser Avast SafeZone

I received a new interface, and now it is not only in the paid versions of Avast, but also in Avast Free 2016, again the Freemium sales model is stepping on the heels of Avast's competitors. An ambiguous solution for those who sell Avast, but the joy for users of the free version is incredible.

The main purpose of the browser is to use it for secure payments on the Internet, or for use in conjunction with sites like "client-bank". For this there is a special mode "Pay mode" (purchase mode, a button at the top right in the form of an icon with a credit card image). Avast SafeZone is actually switched to this mode by default for trusted internet payment sites known to him, but naturally he does not know everyone, and the mode can be turned on manually at any time. The Pay Mode browser mode isolates the session from the operating system, which allows you to protect your PC even if it is infected with a keylogger (a program that reads keystrokes on the keyboard) or some other malicious program that monitors your computer (including if you yourself or another user of your PC installed a legal spyware). This allows us to say that your passwords (including for financial transactions) or credit card numbers will not be stolen.

Note: it is impossible to disable pay mode on sites that are automatically recognized by the SafeZone browser as intended for making payments.

Another important purpose of the browser can be expressed by the impudent saying "a weapon is in the hands of a monkey - a heap of scrap metal." The average average computer user thinks that having an antivirus on his computer protects him from all types of threats in the modern world. Unfortunately, this is not so. T. n. “Zero-day threats” say the opposite (the developer of a virus or other malware tests his “child” on all known antiviruses, makes sure that they do not detect (detect) a dangerous program and only then publish it. can search the network for his favorite movie or series online through Google, Yandex and other search engines, if the series is popular, then it is possible that a virus may also be placed on a site that actually broadcasts a video of a movie online. may not look), and get infected with a virus. It is for such cases when you "climb into the jungle of the Internet unknown to you" and you need Avast SafeZone.Browser from Avast in Safe Mode will not let any malware into the operating system, and after closing- discoveries will remain the same as they were - "clean" from various types of threats on the modern Internet. Therefore, comrades, users of Avast antiviruses, do not become a "monkey us with a grenade ”, always use Avast SafeZone if you decide to surf to unknown sites on the Internet. For SafeZone to work in this mode, you must enable Safe Mode in this browser for the visited page.

Note: Unfortunately, at the moment such an important function does not work in the beta version (and it will be called Shielded Window, instead of SafeMode), the developer wrote about this to all testers in advance, they promise to fix it in the next builds. Nevertheless, in the stable 2015 version (in paid versions), this functionality is available and works properly.

Although the Avast SafeZone browser (safe guard) is written on the basis of the popular Chromium engine (used in Yandex Browser, Opera Next, and in some form in Google Chrome), this does not mean that you can install all available extensions and plugins for it. For the convenience of users, Avast Software has included in its new version special versions of the extensions AdBlock (ad blocking) and Video Downloader (downloading video files on popular Internet sites). It is also worth noting that now you do not need to install Adobe Flash Player "through dancing with a tambourine" (install FireFox, then go to the Adobe website and download Flash Player for Mozilla FireFox, after that Adobe Flash technology starts working in SafeZone), in the available beta version, this installation operation is available through direct access to adobe.com and download-install of the still popular plug-in for PC.

Note: after enabling Ad Block, the browser must be restarted for this extension to work.

Oddly enough, Avast's plug-in Avast Online Security is not included in the Avast SafeZone package, but some of its functionality is already included in the browser. Available buttons are "do not track" (do not track user behavior on the Internet. For example, so that you do not see ads according to recent visits to Internet pages), "web-reputation" (reputation of a visited web page according to the opinions of two hundred million users of Avast products) , "Safe-price" (when you visit a web page with a certain product, the browser shows on which websites you can buy this product cheaper). You can enable or disable this functionality in your browser settings. Just like using the Ad Blocker or Video Downloader add-ons.

Note: Do-not-track and Safe Price do not work for the available beta version yet. Also, the Avast Online Security plugin of the new version is not installed in FireFox.

Technical data for beta participants

  • In case of possible malfunctions in your PC, you can use the Avast cleaner.
  • The program can be installed over the existing stable version of Avast antivirus, in case of a problem with installation "over", use the removal of the previous version through Avast Cleaner and then install the beta version
    To send us reports of BSOD (Windows Blue Death Screen) or any other problems, use the SupportPackage generation tool
    You can find the instructions for using the utility.

We are waiting for your feedback and reports. We wish all participants a successful beta test.

Note: Beta releases are for reference and for enthusiasts who want to help make our products better. Never install beta versions on computers intended for everyday use!

Conclusion

Until the release of the official stable version, it is still too early to draw final conclusions. The Avast product line will still remain one of the most popular in the world, and users will once again receive new functions (password storage, improved special browser), accelerated antivirus work, and, as part of the tradition of releasing new versions, a modified interface. Home users of the free version will certainly be pleased that Avast Passwords and Avast SafeZone have been added to the Avast Free 2016 version. Users of paid versions, as before, will be able to use:

  • customizable sandbox (virtually "fences" selected programs from the operating system, available in Pro, Internet Security and Premier versions);
  • "Silent" firewall and anti-spam (available in the "Internet Security" and "Premier" versions);
  • automatic installation of software updates, file shredder and remote control of a PC without requesting a control code on a managed PC (Avast Premier version).

Also, of course, Avast Software is improving its anti-virus engine and let's hope that by the time it will be released it will become even faster than it was.

For beta users, it doesn't matter what functionality they are testing - paid or free. This paragraph at the end of the article applies to all users (buyers) of stable versions of Avast (version 2015 at the time of this writing). I would like to highlight several points that have been received by us recently.

The built-in antivirus browser Avast Avast SafeZone Browser is an indispensable tool for people who value their privacy or often make payments over the Internet. But for most other users using more popular browsers for everyday surfing the Internet, it is simply an unnecessary add-on to the well-known antivirus. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that many of these people are wondering how to remove Avast Safe Zone Browser?

Of course, the easiest way would be simply not to install this component when installing the Avast antivirus. But, if the browser is already installed, then do you really need to uninstall and reinstall the popular antivirus program to remove it. Not at all necessary, as there is an easier way to remove the unneeded component. So let's find out how to remove Avast SafeZone browser.

Browser removal process

The first steps of the SafeZone browser uninstallation process are no different from the standard procedure for uninstalling Avast antivirus. We go to the uninstallation section of the Windows Control Panel, and select your version of Avast antivirus there. But, instead of the "Delete" button, which we would have pressed during the uninstallation process, we select the "Change" button.

After that, the built-in Avast utility is launched to remove and change the antivirus. It invites us to perform various actions: removing the antivirus, modifying it, fixing it, updating it.

Since we are not going to uninstall the program, but only to change the composition of its components, we select the "Modify" item.

In the next window, we are presented with a list of components that will be included in the anti-virus when it is modified. Uncheck the name of the component that we don't need, namely the SafeZone browser. After that, click on the "Change" button.

The process of changing the composition of the Avast antivirus components is launched.

After the end of the process, in order for the changes to take effect, the utility requires a computer restart. We perform this action and reboot the system.

After restarting SafeZone browser will be completely removed from the system.

Although we studied only the question of how to remove SZBrowser Avast, in the same way you can get rid of other antivirus components (Cleanup, Secureline VPN and Avast Passwords) if you do not need them.

As you can see, although for many users uninstalling the Avast SafeZone browser seems to be an unsolvable task without reinstalling the entire antivirus complex, in fact, this problem can be solved quite simply.

The effectiveness of extensions and add-ons that block the action of malware is incomparable with full-fledged safe browsers like the Czech Avast SafeZone. It offers the owner many ways to secure the work with confidential information, including financial transactions and sending documents.

Why is this browser better than its competitors?

Avast Antivirus Package Element

Let's start with the fact that it is not an independent, but a stand-alone product. It cannot be downloaded separately - it comes with the Avast antivirus package.

Avast SafeZone is developed on the technically successful Gecko engine. This gives the advantage of faster loading of html pages that do not contain multimedia content. You can work with the browser either with a separate program through a shortcut, or by running it as a tool in the antivirus window.

Safe banking

Perhaps the main task of the developers when creating Avast SafeZone was to ensure the protection of financial transactions data from hacking. For this, a mini-emulator of a "clean" system is provided, in which you can safely operate with passwords for bank cards, digital wallets, email addresses and everything that you value.

You can launch it by clicking the credit card icon to the right of the address bar.

Add-ons set

Avast's Protected Web Browser does not provide for the installation of third-party extensions, but it may offer useful pre-installed add-ons:
  • Online Security - performs the function of a firewall, detecting and blocking phishing and hacking threats;
  • AD Blocker - blocks pop-up advertising banners;
  • Password - stores passwords from accounts, wallets and other confidential resources;
  • Video Downloader - securely downloads audio and video clips from popular sites and social networks;
  • SafePrice is an online directory that tracks the best product prices on the web.

Original design and interface

Unlike other clone browsers, Avast SafeZone has significant external differences from competitors. The first thing that catches your eye is the corporate design in black, gray and orange colors, the austerity of rectangular buttons, panels and icons, as if hinting at the special purpose of the product.

The main elements of the interface have not changed, but have been functionally supplemented (banking mode, key storage, etc.).

Advantages

  • one of the safest browsers with two-level protection against hacking;
  • working with finances through a virtual environment;
  • secure storage of passwords;
  • blocking annoying ads;
  • the ability to download video and audio files;
  • the impossibility of introducing and changing browser settings by malware;
  • original design of the interface.

Flaws

  • the browser cannot be supplemented with new extensions.

Performance Test - Avast SafeZone Browser vs. Google Chrome vs. Mozilla Firefox vs. Internet Explorer

Besides the security element, one of the most important browser qualities is performance and speed... We have compared SafeZone browser against the market - Google chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer... And surprisingly Avast SafeZone is really fast, almost as Chrome!

Using various available tools for browser performance testing we found out following. Chrome (green bar) is still the fastest browser on the market, scoring high scores in all tests. While SafeZone (orange bar) is the second fastest browser nowadays. Firefox is somehow behind them and Internet Explorer is by far the slowest one.

Final performance test results are highlighted on the chart above. The higher the score is, the faster the browser is. You can find more details about how we tested in the ‘Additional Notes’ section at the end of the article.

Avast SafeZone Browser Features in Detail

Let’s take a look on the key SafeZone features in detail.

Ad Blocker - No More Advertisements While Browsing

One of the pre-installed built-in plugins is Ad blocker... Recently it raised some controversy whether it's fair to use it and some sites even restricted content to users who are using any form of ad blocking. On the image below you can see Ad Blocker blocked 12 different ads on Huffington Post site.

Ad Blocker in Avast SafeZone runs fully automatic and there is no need to set it up. Just browse the web as usual and all ads are blocked. To see the number of ads blocked click on the red icon ‘AD’ in the navigation panel. You can also disable Ad Block for a specific domain or block any other specific ad (element) on the page.

Pay Mode - Do Your Banking & Shopping in Total Privacy

The most interesting and unique feature of the SafeZone browser is Pay Mode... It basically opens any page in a virtual environment (sandbox) which is completely isolated from your system. That means any keylogger or hacker cannot see what you are doing or what is your password. Also, your system can’t be infected if you visit some ‘shady’ site.

Pay Mode is automatically triggered for a majority of the online banking sites. In case your bank is not on the list you can always enter Pay Mode by clicking the credit card icon next to the navigation panel (top-right corner). You can tell the page is opened in Pay Mode if the tab has green credit card icon and font.

Video Downloader - Download Videos From YouTube With Single Click

Last but not least is the Video downloader, again a pre-installed built-in plugin. It makes it super easy to download videos to your computer from popular servers like YouTube or Vimeo. Mostly in the MP4 format.

To download video simple hover over it and the orange download icon will appear (see the screenshot above). Simply click on it and video will start downloading on your computer so you can play it anytime later, even when you are offline.

Avast SafeZone Browser Review & Test Conclusion

We definitely find Avast SafeZone browser powerful, fast and secure... Pay Mode is the biggest advantage and technically it makes the browser really the most secure one on the market. It lacks some customization like custom plugins, but that makes it even more secured. It's a perfect choice for common Internet users. And if you like Opera, you will definitely love SafeZone.

Additional Notes

For measuring the browser performance we have used following tests: Peacekeeper, Browsermark, Octane 2.0 and Dromaeo. All of them are testing browser performance and speed using various methods like re-sizing 2D / 3D objects using CSS, executing JavaScripts, GPU and DOM tests. All tests were performed on the same computer running on Windows 7 Professional x64 with CPU Intel Core i7 @ 2.70GHz and 8 GB RAM.
