What is an electronic tablet. What is a tablet and its functions

Tablets are a novelty that everyone fell in love with very quickly. They have become so popular not only because everything new is interesting to everyone, or because this is another beautiful toy. This happened also due to the fact that the capabilities of a tablet computer are practically not inferior, or even surpass their predecessors - netbooks, but the device itself is much smaller and more convenient.

Consider the main features of a tablet computer

The functionality of the tablet is quite large. This is a great helper for any Internet resident. Thanks to this find, you can surf the Internet wherever and whenever you want. With the help of a large, richly colored touch screen, it is very convenient to navigate the Internet pages. Also, a tablet computer will allow you to constantly keep in touch with your friends, acquaintances or work colleagues. After all, in the first place, it was created precisely for this.

With its help, you will always have at your fingertips social networks, file sharing services, various kinds of video resources, and, in principle, everything that is on the Internet.

Almost all are equipped with a good camera that enhances the capabilities of tablet computers. With it, you can take high-quality pictures, record videos and, most importantly, communicate via video chats. Although the key, probably, will be here - to communicate. Of course, the quality of the photos is really quite good, but the process of photographing itself looks rather ridiculous and extraordinary, the device is quite large.

The advantages of a tablet computer over other types of portable technology are in size and price. A magazine-sized device has put a lot of possibilities, from which everyone will find what they like. And the price for these features will be much less than what you would pay for a laptop.

All tablet computers have powerful multimedia capabilities. Thanks to its excellent display, it is very pleasant to view video files on it. Saturation and clarity of the image will not leave anyone indifferent.

There are many additional utilities available to expand the capabilities of your tablet. A bunch of graphic and video editors, all kinds of office programs expand the range of work with it.

The tablet computer can also be used as a navigator. If you have the Internet, you will always have at your fingertips various maps of the area from search engines. It can also be used as a GPS navigator.

A tablet computer is also an excellent reader. Book lovers will surely appreciate the high-quality display, which is very suitable for reading. And the cost of the electronic version of the book is several times cheaper than the paper one, and this gives a chance to save money.

Well, you can't ignore the opportunity to use the tablet as a gaming station. Thanks to its powerful filling, even the most demanding games can be played on it, and for this many people fell in love with it. If you take into account all the nuances of, then you can buy an excellent device at a low price, which will be an excellent assistant for you.

Which is better - a tablet or a netbook? There is no definite answer. Opinions are divided and some believe that the tablet will oust netbooks from the market, while others that they will simply occupy their own niche.

We will not judge, we will just sort everything out in order. If you work more with text or graphics, then you will naturally be better off purchasing a netbook. With the help of everyone's familiar keyboard, work much faster than typing on a touch screen. And the mouse can be easily connected to the netbook, which makes working with it even more pleasant and convenient.

As for the tablet, it is more suitable for those people who prefer the Internet. The touch screen provides excellent navigation through the pages, the small size of the device allows you to take it with you wherever you go. On the plus side, the tablet works autonomously for much longer than a netbook.

And in the end, we can say that the capabilities of a tablet computer are limited only by your imagination. From the current range of programs, everyone will be able to choose what they need for work or entertainment and thereby expand their capabilities.

Tablet PCs are one of the most striking examples of the rapid development of mobile technology. These devices combine all the capabilities of a computer and a compact size. This allows you to always carry your tablet with you, while having easy and quick access to a huge set of features. The functions of a tablet have no boundaries, as well as the capabilities of a computer, because in fact it is a computer, only in a more compact and lighter "package".

In the modern pace of life, a tablet is an indispensable assistant for every business person, and also allows you to relax while relaxing and have fun with friends and family. As mentioned above, the capabilities and functions of tablets have no boundaries. For business people, this is a huge set of useful functions and tools that can be used to solve almost any problem. At the same time, the tablet is a whole world of entertainment. Movies, music, modern 3D games with high graphics, all kinds of entertainment, communication with friends and family. All this is united in a Tablet PC.

1. Tablets and their functions and capabilities

As already mentioned, a tablet PC is an irreplaceable assistant in the life of every business person. With its help, you can solve a wide variety of tasks. In addition, the tablet allows you to always and everywhere stay in touch, thanks to which you can create a video conference at any time, call or send a letter to your business partner or colleagues.

In addition, tablets are equipped with digital cameras that allow you to take pictures or record personal videos. This allows you to capture all the memorable moments and create your own photo albums.

As you know, tablet PCs run on the basis of an operating system. It can be Android OS or another system. However, any operating system allows you to install special programs (applications) on the device that expand the capabilities of tablets. So, to solve non-standard tasks, you just need to install the required application that can perform the required functions.

Today we can see a huge proliferation of tablets around the world. The Russian market is no exception. On store shelves and in online store catalogs, you can find a wide variety of types of tablets that can perform different tasks and are designed for specific situations.

1.1. Types of tablets and their functions

It is worth noting that all the functions of a tablet computer, regardless of model and manufacturer, are aimed solely at facilitating the solution of everyday tasks.

However, the occupation of people can differ, and quite strongly. With this in mind, manufacturers are releasing different models of tablet PCs that are aimed at fulfilling the functions of specific people. For example, if you need to constantly have free access to the Internet, while you travel a lot, then you need a tablet with a built-in 3G / 4G modem. If you work in a place where there are open Wi-Fi points, then you should give preference to a device equipped with a Wi-Fi module.

Of course, there are also universal tablets that combine almost all the functions and capabilities of modern tablets, but they also cost much more. And due to the fact that all mobile modules, modems and additional devices take up space inside the device, the tablet itself is quite large in size and weight. So here you have to choose - narrow focus and limited capabilities or large size, high cost and heavy weight.

Whichever device you prefer, they all have common benefits. The first thing to note is the touchscreen display, which takes up most of the device. This screen allows you to use the tablet as conveniently and quickly as possible. And thanks to the optimization of web browsers, Internet surfing has become even more convenient and enjoyable. But this is not the end of the tablet's functions.

As already mentioned, most tablets are equipped with built-in 3G modems. But what is it, and what advantages does it give us?

1.2. 3G function in the tablet

3G / 4G modem provides users with Internet access. Moreover, anywhere in the country. This is especially important for people who are constantly on the road, who often travel on business trips, travel, and so on. It is difficult to find open access to high-speed Internet via Wi-Fi on the way, so a 3G modem is the ideal solution. Of course, the speed of such a connection is not high, but for solving everyday tasks, such as sending letters, checking mail, making Skype calls, browsing websites, and so on, it is quite enough.

Don't be discouraged if you have already purchased a tablet without a built-in 3G modem. If you have a trip and need mobile Internet, an external USB 3G / 4G modem can be a way out of this situation. It plugs into a USB port and gives you quick and easy Internet access.

1.3. Wi-Fi module in the tablet

In the vast majority of cases, tablet PCs are equipped with a Wi-Fi module. It takes up very little space in the device, so it does not affect its dimensions at all. In addition, such a module does not require a lot of energy, practically without affecting the operating time without recharging. Considering all these advantages, manufacturers equip absolutely all tablets and smartphones with Wi-Fi modules.

Why is this needed? Firstly, if you have an open Wi-Fi hotspot, which is currently available in almost any shopping center, cafe and in most parks, you get free high-speed Internet access. The main advantage of such a connection is its high speed and rather long range.

In addition to access to the Internet, the Wi-Fi module allows you to connect to other tablets, smartphones, laptops and other devices that have such a module. This achieves a high data transfer rate. In addition, the Wi-Fi module allows you to use mobile routers to access the Internet. If your tablet is not equipped with a 3G / 4G modem, then you can purchase a mobile Wi-Fi router that will connect to the mobile Internet and distribute it to all surrounding devices. This is extremely convenient if you have more than one device, or if you are traveling with a company.

1.4. Tablet with ringer function

Many tablet models have a call function. This means that the device has a SIM card slot and that you can use the tablet as a phone. Typically, these tablets have a relatively small screen - 7 ". Thus, the tablet is optimized as much as possible - it is convenient for surfing the Internet, and also compact enough to use as a phone.

To increase convenience and comfort, you should pay attention to an additional wireless headset, which will save users from having to take the tablet out of their pocket to answer a call. You also don't have to hold a rather large device to your ear.

Of course, if the tablet is equipped with built-in 3G / 4G modems, it also has a slot for a regular SIM card, but the card in this case is used exclusively for Internet access. In this case, calls can be made via Skype or another Internet service. However, to make such calls, for example, via Skype, the subscriber you want to call must also open the program and remain constantly online.

1.5. Internet functions in the tablet

Today, manufacturers have perfected their devices, and now the tablet is one of the most convenient tools for accessing the Internet. In addition, as mentioned above, all web browsers are fully optimized for touch screens. This means that to enter the desired section of the site, you just need to touch the required area on the screen.

The advantage of tablets over computers is that they are the most convenient mobile devices, making Internet access possible anywhere in the country. Of course, laptops have similar capabilities, but they are more bulky and heavy, which is why they are not so convenient to carry with you, and in terms of comfort and convenience of working on the Internet, laptops lose to tablets in all respects, except for typing. However, here too, there are tablets that have a removable keyboard. Such devices are called "transformers". They combine all the advantages of a laptop and a PC with maximum portability and ease of use.

Modern progress is doing everything to improve the comfort of people. The main functions of the tablet are vivid proof of this. After all, all the tasks that a personal computer is capable of performing is also capable of performing a tablet PC.

1.6. Tablet computer, its functions and capabilities

As already mentioned, on the Russian market you can find a wide variety of models of tablets and tablet PCs. As you may have guessed, these are two different subspecies of tablets. A tablet computer is the same tablet that delivers high performance. In terms of performance and functionality, such devices are practically not inferior to stationary computers, but they are devoid of a hardware keyboard. Because of this, typing is not the most comfortable experience.

However, with any other tasks, such tablets cope no worse than the same PC. This tablet is a great combination of portability and high power.

2. Why and who needs a tablet computer: Video

2.1. Graphics Tablet Features

A graphics tablet is a special design for those who work with drawings and photographs. All of its functions and capabilities are aimed at increasing comfort in image processing, as well as for freehand drawing. In other words, it is a tablet with a drawing function. Of course, any other tablet allows you to install drawing applications, but only graphics devices allow you to perform such tasks with maximum comfort.

In addition, graphics tablets provide a number of useful additional imaging tools. However, full licensed software must be installed on these tablets to fully benefit from these tablets. Only official programs allow you to fully use all the advantages and functions of a graphics tablet.

So, summing up, we can say what a tablet is and its functions - it is a convenient mobile device that allows you to perform all the functions that a personal computer is capable of performing. A tablet is a convenient tool for accessing the Internet, as well as for solving most everyday tasks. What features does the tablet have? Depending on the model, the tablet is capable of performing certain tasks.

However, it should be noted that any tablet is capable of performing almost any function, regardless of the model. All you need to do is install the required software. Although, of course, a specialized tablet does its job better. That is, any tablet is capable of working with photos and images, but a graphics tablet allows you to do this as conveniently as possible.

What other functions can the tablet perform? Yes, almost any. Thanks to the universal software, today it is Android or IOS, a wide variety of programs can be installed on the tablet that allow you to carry out almost any task. Smart function in the tablet makes the device even more convenient to use.

Games, music, video and photo, Internet, communications, what other functions do you need from tablets? The limitations of possibilities lie only in your imagination. Modern tablets are capable of performing any task, and they allow you to do it as conveniently as possible, anywhere and at any time.

An Internet tablet is the most simplified and lightweight tablet computer, the main function of which is to provide the ability to work on the Internet. Although, additional features, like watching videos and reading e-books, have not been canceled.

Outwardly, an Internet tablet is something like a large smartphone, which is controlled with your fingers and that's it ... It has become almost a standard that these screens support multi-touch gestures (about them below).

By the way, if you wish, you can connect an external keyboard and even a mouse to your tablet .. but this already depends on the model and usually additional accessories are purchased separately

Internet tablets run on mobile operating systems. In fact - today there are two of these operating systems - iOS for tablets from Apple and Android for everyone else. Although, there are a few exceptions, for example, the Windows 7 tablet, which is successfully sold on the market.

Tablet PC market today

The history of modern Internet tablets began in 2010 when Steve Jobs introduced the first model of the legendary Apple iPad to the world.

Plus iPad (now iPad2) not only in big show-off, but in the fact that the device interface is really the most convenient, and the tablet is very high quality, fast and efficient.

Minus - firstly, Flash technology, which Apple does not support and which for some reason is constantly needed! Secondly, there is no memory card slot, which is still a serious limitation. Third - the inconvenience of synchronizing the tablet and computer - only through a special program iTunes, which is not so simple and has its own "problems".

The fourth and main disadvantage that may prevent you from choosing an iPad is the price. All the same, it is an expensive "toy".

But, as they say, iPad is not the only one. It is not uncommon for the super-functions of the "main" tablet to turn out to be simply unnecessary ... and practical people choose ideal alternative devices for themselves. Let's do it and we'll do it.

Tablet specifications:

The size

We say tablet size, we mean screen size and vice versa. Because, in fact, apart from the screen, the tablet has no other components ... The Internet tablet market is dominated by three standard displays: 7 inches, 8 inches, 9.7 and 10 inches.

Of course, the larger the screen, the more comfortable it is to watch movies, play games, read books ... But the large screen also has one drawback - it is not always convenient to use an oversized device, for example, in transport. You have to get it, hold it, control it so that you don't snatch it out of your hands ...

Therefore, if you are planning to use your tablet advantage "on the go", then pay attention to the models with a 7-8 inch screen. Well, we will talk about how the screen should be below.

Screen

Screen size:
There are four standard screen sizes - 7 ", 8", 9.7 "and 10" -10.1 ". At the same time, screens 7" and 10 "have an aspect ratio of 16: 9, and 8" and 9.7 "- 4: 3 (remember that iPad screen has a size of 9.7 "and an aspect ratio of 4: 3).

A 16: 9 wide screen is better for watching movies. For browsing the Internet and reading it is more convenient narrow - 4: 3.

The huge advantage of a seven-inch tablet is its light weight and size. It is easy to hold in your hands for extended periods of time and fits into a jacket pocket or purse.

The 7 "screen size is sufficient for games (almost all of them were created for mobile phones with much smaller screens) and watching movies on the go. The 7" wide screen is too small for the Internet and reading. Yes, everything is visible and can be used, but at 8 "-9.7" it is much more convenient. Tablets with a 10 "-10.1" wide screen are not very practical in my opinion.

There are two main types of screens used in tablets - IPS and TN. IPS has maximum viewing angles and excellent picture parameters, but it is expensive. TN can be found in very different quality: on some screens the picture may darken when the angle deviates downward by 5 degrees, on others it looks quite decent when viewed from large angles.

1. Screen type

Firstly, there are two types of touch screens - capacitive and resistive. The capacitive screen reacts only to finger pressing, resistive to pressing everything that gets into the hand, and most often the owners of such screens have a special stick in their hand - a stylus.

A resistive screen in front of a capacitive one has one big plus - it is cheaper, and three big minuses: firstly, it is less reliable, and secondly, it has low light transmission, so you have to use a strong backlight and, as a result, the battery will run out faster. And the third minus is especially important for tablets. very significantly limits their functionality - it is impossible to implement multi-touch gesture control technology on the resistive screen! About her below

2. What is multitouch

The presence of multi-touch support means that the tablet's touch screen perceives not one, but several touches at once. This makes control even more convenient, makes it possible to scale, move, rotate, group objects using typical gestures, and opens up a wide scope for games.

Fortunately, resistive screens and the lack of multitouch are already a thing of the past and remain the lot of very cheap tablets.

3. Screen Expansion

In seven-inch tablets, screens with resolutions of 800x480 and 1024x600 pixels are most often used. Most tablets have a 800x480 pixel screen, but recently inexpensive tablets with 1024x600 pixel screens have begun to appear. If you plan to use your tablet for surfing the Internet and reading, I highly recommend looking for a tablet with a 1024x600 pixel screen, because the text on it looks much clearer.

The vast majority of 8 "tablets have a resolution of 800x600 pixels, but tablets with screens of 1024x768 pixels and even higher ones are starting to appear. Of course, I do not recommend taking a tablet with an 800x600 pixels screen, because 800 pixels wide is not enough even for a 7" screen.

The same thing happens with 9.7 "tablets: the standard screen is 1024x768 pixels (like the iPad 2), but tablets with 1280x768 screens have begun to appear.

Processor and RAM

As with laptops, the processor in tablets is the heart of the whole mechanism. The speed and stability of all applications depends on it!

If you do not plan to perform super-complex tasks like processing graphics or saving the world from a space threat, then a processor with a frequency of about 600 MHz will be enough for you.

If you need fast application performance, wide gaming opportunities and the ability to view FullHD-video, then it is better to choose a tablet with a processor with a frequency of more than 1 GHz. The standard solution for today is the architects' processors Cortex A8 and A9. Cortex is not a processor model, but an architecture from ARM, which itself does not make processors. The AllWinner A10 chip is very popular, it includes the A8 core operating at 1000-1200Mhz frequency and the Mali-400 graphics core. Cortex A9 comes in single-core and dual-core. Of course, the more the better, but a single-core A8 at 1Ghz is already good - the Internet, video, toys will work fine.

The operating memory also affects the speed of the device:
1. RAM - RAM required for programs to run. Occurs from 256MB to 1GB. It should be at least 512 MB, but 1GB will not hurt either.
2. System flash memory on which the operating system and programs are installed. It is desirable that this memory is also 1GB.
3. MicroSD card slot. The card can store video files, music, data, and also install some large programs and games.
4. Internal storage. Replaces or supplements the memory card. Usually it has a volume of 8GB or 16GB, while the real volume will be 6 or 14GB. In this case, it is not at all necessary to strive for 16GB, because you can always use a MicroSD card.

Internet

All tablets have WI-FI. Bluetooth is quite rare, and is it really needed? There are tablets with a built-in 3G modem and a SIM card slot, but there are very few of them. Therefore, it is hardly worth hoping to find a tablet with 3G that is good in all respects, but there are two solutions that replace the built-in 3G in the tablet:
1. Most tablets support external USB modem. At the same time, you don't even need to configure something: after connecting the modem, the tablet goes online by itself. It is only important that your modem is included in the list of supported ones. The most standard modems that all support are Huawei E1550, E1750. To connect the modem, you may need an OTG cable, which may not be included in the tablet package.
2. All smartphones on Android (and iPhone too) can work in hotspot mode. In this case, the phone becomes a wi-fi router. Setting up this mode in your phone is very simple.

Additional functions

Additional functions and modules that the tablet may have:
1. Gsm- this module makes it possible to call and write SMS, i.e. use your tablet like a great phone. Now this module is no longer a rarity in tablets.

2. Bluetoth- this interface allows you to connect various wireless devices, most often wireless headsets.

3. Gps- the module for determining the coordinates is by far the most useful. It will enable the Owner to determine his position and speed. Allows you to use your tablet as an auto-navigator. And the author of these lines personally went to pick mushrooms with a tablet and a GPS.

4. USB- something that Apple does not have, but the rest have. It is used to connect everything and everyone: flash drive, mouse, keyboard, player, printer, phone, external hard drive, etc. It all depends on the capabilities and tasks. Since a tablet is a mobile device, there is usually only one USB in it. This is often a mini-USB. All tablets have a USB port for connecting to a computer, but not all have an OTG mode (connecting USB devices to a tablet). For OTG, there can be either a large USB connector, or a separate MiniUSB connector, or even a single MiniUSB connector used both for connecting to a computer and for OTG through a special OTG adapter. For some tablets, the adapter is included, for some you need to buy it separately

5. HDMI- used to display images from a tablet on a screen, such as a TV, Full HD high definition - to watch HD movies in stunning quality.

Operating system

Almost all tablets run Android. There are versions 2.2, 2.3 and 4.0. Tablets on Android lower than version 2.3 are no longer worth buying, but at 2.3 it is quite possible: Android 4 ICS does not have significant advantages for the user, but it has disadvantages, in particular, there are problems with connecting the tablet to a computer in USB drive mode. Not all tablets on Android 4 have this implemented, and in some cases instabilities in the operation of the tablet software after such a connection may be observed. In any case, all new tablets come with Android 4.0.3, so there is no choice.

Tablet weight

When choosing a tablet size, you should pay attention to its weight. A good weight for a 7-inch tablet is 320-330 grams. There are also 400-gram monsters, but it's better not to take them.
The 9.7 "tablet weighs 586-730 grams (iPads weigh from 601 to 662 grams, depending on the model). The 662 grams of the New iPad 4G are quite noticeable - it's hard to hold it for a long time. Therefore, I definitely do not recommend buying 700-gram tablets.
In theory, the golden mean would have to be an eight-inch tablet - from 490 to 600 grams.

Specific Tips

In conclusion, I would like to move from vague descriptions of characteristics and other demagoguery to specific advice. Namely, to advise - the most proven models, those with which they worked themselves and which are in special demand!

1.7 "IPS or TN 1024x600, Cortex A9, OTG, up to 330 grams, known model.
2. 8 "1024x768, Cortex A9, OTG, up to 500 grams, brand presence.
3.9.7 "IPS 1280x768, Cortex A9, OTG, up to 650 grams, brand presence.
If nothing with the given characteristics could be found, the processor bar can be lowered to A8, and the screen resolution of the 9.7 "model is up to 1024x768.

Why you need it: seven reasons to buy a tablet

Before talking about the advantages of tablets, it is worth deciding what exactly this term implies. Traditionally, a tablet is called a type of laptop that provides input of handwritten information using a touch screen. In other words, you can imagine that a tablet is either a hugely grown smartphone with a touchscreen, or a netbook without a traditional keyboard. That is why the tablet is so often compared with the first, then with the second, but this is not entirely true. Tablets usually run special operating systems like Android, iOS, webOS, and so on.

What are the reasons that lead us to buy a tablet?

Reason one: it makes work easier

Tablet computers make it much easier to perform simple everyday tasks: checking mail, surfing the Internet, viewing and easily editing documents, viewing charts and drawings, reading e-books. The diagonal of most tablets usually ranges from 7 to 10 inches, which is quite comparable to netbooks. A screen of this size allows you to fully load web pages and view office documents with almost no scrolling. Tablets are quite handy for demos, for example, your own portfolio, charts, diagrams, and so on. The presence of a touchscreen significantly reduces the time for such small movements as scrolling through files or zooming in, and a finger-oriented interface is much more convenient than a mouse or touchpad on laptops.

Thanks to the abundance of programs for tablets, it can become a real professional tool. Office apps let you create and edit documents and spreadsheets on the go. Photoshop Express, available for iOS and Android devices, is a great tool for mobile image retouching. The acclaimed Garage Band iPad app is a true mini studio for music lovers.

In short, almost any task can be solved with tablet app stores. Nevertheless, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs described the essence of tablets quite accurately at the presentation of iPad 2: “A tablet and a desktop computer are like a car and a truck. The car copes with many tasks, but for the harder work you need a truck. " So the tablet should be taken as a convenient tool for simple work and do not expect more serious functionality from it.

Reason two: it is suitable for home

You can find a lot of applications for the tablet at home. When tablets first appeared, many considered them just a prestigious photo frame, but this is far from the case. Reading the latest news, checking emails or taking photos from your next trip is much more comfortable sitting on the couch, rather than at your desk. In addition, many tablets today have the function of connecting to a TV via HDMI, that is, through a tablet it is possible to play videos or photos on a TV screen. For example, tablets Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Apple iPad 2, Acer Iconia Tab 501 and others are equipped with similar outputs, however, special adapters and cables are required to connect. Again, thanks to the application market, the tablet can become a convenient planner of current affairs and purchases, an alarm clock, an advisor and a faithful friend.

Reason three: it's easy to travel with it

Perhaps the main advantage of the tablet is its mobility, the ability to always have it at hand without unnecessary problems. Average tablet weights range from 600 to 900 grams, which is significantly less than most netbooks. The tablet will easily fit into a briefcase or a handbag and will be a great companion on the road. The memory capacity of most tablets today is at least 16 GB, which is quite enough for a collection of your favorite tunes, a good hundred e-books and a couple of videos to while away the time on the road.

With your tablet, you can immediately create photo galleries (for example, the Acer Iconia Tab A500 has a microSD card reader and a USB port for flash drives). The battery life of tablets is from 6 to 10 hours (for example, the well-known iPad from Apple works for at least 10 hours), which means that you do not need to constantly carry a charger with you. In this regard, the tablet is much more like a mobile phone, which today simply cannot be done without.

Many tablets are equipped with a GPS navigator and contain maps, which can be useful when walking or traveling in unfamiliar places. Of course, with a large screen size, the tablet will not be as convenient to use as a traditional GPS navigator, but in difficult times it will tell you the way.

Reason four: it is interesting for children too

The good thing about the tablet is that there can be many scenarios for its use. However, as practice shows, tablets are much more accessible to children than computers or laptops due to their simple design.

According to numerous user reviews, two-year-old kids can easily learn to work with a tablet on the iOS mobile system, on which the popular iPad 2 works. More and more companies today are developing new educational and developmental applications for children - interactive alphabets, bright books, funny games. In this regard, tablets provide more freedom for creativity, more interactivity in games and applications due to capacitive touch screens and support for multiple touches (multitouch). Thus, the tablet can become one of the most original ways of teaching and developing children, especially since nowadays there is no escape from mobile technologies.

Reason five: it's easy to modify

Bluetooth keyboard case and keyboard with docking station

The great thing about tablets is that most of them can be easily modified depending on the user's needs. The ability to connect tablets to a TV for watching movies has already been mentioned above. For those who type a lot, the option of tablets with a detachable keyboard (for example, the Asus EEE Pad Transformer) is suitable. A Bluetooth keyboard is also suitable for many models of tablets, in which case it is worth buying a docking station in order to fix the tablet in a certain position. For the iPad 2, for example, there is a keyboard with a docking station that also recharges the tablet computer. Accessory makers have even gone so far as to create special cases with a keyboard already built into them, which quite elegantly solves the problem of typing on the road or when traveling privately.

Case with block for notes

By the way, the assortment of covers for tablets is incredibly diverse, and you can choose the most convenient options just for your needs. There are even somewhat redundant hybrids: for example, the tablet case contains an extra box for traditional handwritten notes. In short, with the help of additional accessories from the tablet, you can make a truly functional and convenient device for you.

Reason six: tablets are different

HTC Flyer, Asus EEE Pad Transformer and Sony Tablet P

Despite the fact that the tablet market is currently only gaining momentum, many manufacturers are already delighting users with a variety of options that are completely different from each other.

We have already mentioned the Asus EEE Pad Transformer tablet with a detachable keyboard, which, when connected to the tablet, makes it incredibly similar to a regular laptop.

The Flyer tablet from HTC is an interesting combination of portability and functionality - a 7-inch screen, light weight and a dedicated stylus for taking notes in almost any application. Such a tablet, due to its size, is suitable for those who are on the move and want to be constantly in touch. It is convenient to hold the tablet in your hand and work with it on the move.

A compromise between seven and ten inches is offered by Samsung - the 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet. Recently, an elegant solution for ladies has appeared on the market: the Sony Tablet P is a clamshell tablet with two screens based on the Android operating system.

All this diversity indicates that manufacturers continue to look for new forms and variations of tablets for various categories of users, which means that it will not be difficult to choose something suitable.

Reason seven: it looks impressive

Say what you like, but a tablet is a fashion device, effective in almost any environment. Undoubtedly, your friends and colleagues will appreciate and envy the convenience and portability of your tablet, as well as feel the benefits of this device when demonstrating its capabilities.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the tablet is not a complete replacement for either a laptop or a cell phone, so it can hardly be called one of the most essential devices. Nevertheless, the positive aspects of the tablet are quite obvious, so it can be quite a useful assistant in your mobile family.

Functions of tablet computers (iPad and the like). Tablet PC functions

What functions does the tablet have

Given the rapid development of technology, as well as the huge selection of tablets on the Russian market, the question arises, what functions does a tablet perform? Immediately I would like to note that there are so many different models of tablets that it is sometimes very difficult to make a choice of a specific device.

Each manufacturer is trying to bypass its competitors by developing and implementing all kinds of "chips" in soybeans that expand the capabilities of the tablet. Of course, there are tablet PCs that have a narrow specialization, for example, a graphics tablet. However, it should be noted that this does not mean that such a tablet is not capable of performing tasks other than processing photos and video files. This suggests that this device will cope with these tasks faster than a regular tablet, providing the user with a more convenient interface.

At the same time, the device is quite capable of performing all other functions. In general, in order to understand what functions the tablet has, one should understand what it is and why it is needed.

1. What is a tablet

Basically, a tablet is a mini computer. Accordingly, it is capable of performing the same tasks as a personal computer. The main feature of the tablet is the touch screen, which takes up most of the device. At the same time, all applications, web browsers and programs are fully optimized, which makes the work much more convenient and efficient.

Of course, tasks such as typing or working with spreadsheets are much more convenient to perform using a regular computer and keyboard, but there are other tasks that are best done using a tablet.

Modern stores are overflowing with a wide variety of tablets. In Russia, you can easily find a tablet with a TV function. In addition, tablets with a cell phone function and many other models are quite common. Regardless of their name and specialization, they are capable of performing any task. The difference between specialized tablets is that they initially have installed applications that allow you to perform certain tasks.

2. So what are the functions of the tablet?

Modern tablets and their functions depend only on your imagination and the availability of Internet access. As mentioned earlier, the tablet is essentially the same computer, only in a compact "package". This means that it is capable of performing a wide variety of tasks. To do this, you just need to install the required software - the so-called application. If we talk about the hardware, then modern tablets have powerful enough processors and video cards, which allows them to perform any task, not inferior to personal computers.

3. Tablet its functions and capabilities

You already know that there are specialized tablets. Let's take a closer look at their functions and capabilities.

The first thing to consider is tablets with 3G functionality. This is an ordinary tablet that has a built-in 3G modem. However, this does not mean that you can make calls using such a device. In most cases, a 3G modem is used to access the mobile Internet. Despite the fact that today we can already observe the active introduction of new-generation 4G networks, third-generation communications will remain relevant for a long time and occupy a leading position. Although, of course, it is better to be prepared for everything and buy a tablet with a 4G / 3G modem.

3.1. Cell Phone Tablets

Of course, there are models that allow you to make calls to other subscribers. As a rule, they have a small display diagonal for greater convenience. The advantage of these tablets is that they save you the hassle of carrying your phone with you.

Do not be upset if your tablet does not have this capability, because you can make calls over the Internet. To do this, you just need to install a program, for example, Skype, and have a constant Internet connection. 3G speed is sufficient for voice calls. The only caveat is that the subscriber you are going to call must also be connected to the Internet, and also have the program installed. However, there are also pluses - calls are completely free all over the world. In this case, the program can be installed on a laptop, computer, smartphone or tablet.

3.2. Tablet with e-book function

Many people enjoy reading on the road, on vacation, or just at home before bed. In the latter case, of course, you can buy an ordinary book, but in the rest, constantly carrying books with you is inconvenient, not practical and, finally, just hard. This issue was resolved by the tablet. The e-book function in the tablet saves you such inconvenience, and also allows you to create personal libraries for every taste. It should be noted that it is much easier to download a book than to find it in a store and buy it. In addition, you can download literature absolutely free.

Do not think that a tablet with an e-reader function is not capable of doing other tasks. This is the same device. The only difference is that it initially provides an application that allows you to read books with maximum comfort. In addition, they are natively capable of supporting all existing e-book formats.

3.3. LTE function in the tablet

LTE is a new generation communication that is actively being introduced into existing networks. We have already talked about 4G communication earlier. LTE is one of the standards for this communication. Moreover, it is the most common and promising.

Thus, the LTE function in the tablet opens up new possibilities for users. High-speed Internet, new operator services, higher quality communications, and so on. In addition, as a rule, such tablets work quite successfully in networks of previous generations.

However, when choosing a tablet with the LTE function, you should carefully study the technical characteristics, since each country has its own frequency range for building this type of communication. For example, iPad 3 has an LTE module, but it is not able to work in Russian networks, since it works at a different frequency.

3.4. Tablet with TV function

Like any other specialized tablet, this model has one difference from other models, which is that it has built-in programs that allow you to watch TV programs. In some models, these capabilities are realized via an Internet connection, and in some there is a built-in TV tuner. In the latter case, you just need to tune the channels to watch TV programs. In this case, the presence of the Internet is not at all necessary.

In addition, such tablets allow you to view programs with greater comfort and have more flexible video image settings.

3.5. What functions does a tablet computer perform?

Very often speaking about a tablet computer, people understand by this term an ordinary tablet. This is a little wrong. There are some differences between the tablet PC and the tablet. In fact, both of these devices are mobile and compact, and also perform almost the same functions. However, the difference between them lies in speed and additional features.

Tablet PC has the most powerful "stuffing" (processor, video card, as well as RAM, and so on). Thanks to this, such tablets are able to perform the most complex tasks as quickly as possible. Typically, your tablet has more connectors for additional equipment and a larger battery.

Of course, in terms of functionality, it does not surpass ordinary tablets, but it performs tasks much faster.

3.6. Tablet with navigator function

As a rule, every modern tablet has a built-in GPS module that allows you to use various programs for navigation. However, the tablet, which originally provided this function, already has software installed with a wide range of additional features.

Of course, you can install the navigator on a regular tablet with GPS, but, as a rule, such programs are paid or extremely difficult to find. A tablet with a navigator function eliminates the need to search and purchase navigation programs.

It should be borne in mind that the tablet is large enough, which is why such a device should not be fixed to the windshield, as it will limit the view. A more suitable location with easy and quick access should be identified.

Don't be discouraged if your tablet doesn't have a GPS module. You can also use maps and navigation using an Internet connection, and 3G speed is more than enough for this.

4. Tablet - why you need it: Video

5. What other features should a tablet have?

As mentioned earlier, a tablet is a mini computer that is capable of performing any tasks available to a regular PC. Therefore, what functions the tablet has is up to you. To solve certain problems, you just need to install the appropriate program.

Of course, a tablet cannot fully replace a computer, because it is much more convenient to work on a stationary PC, for example, with texts or tables. However, there are a number of functions and tasks that are much more convenient to perform with a tablet. In addition, you can take your tablet with you on trips and business trips.

A modern tablet and its functions allow you to perform almost any task. What's more, tablets have a variety of entertainment features. Games, movies, music - all this will allow you to have fun on the road or on vacation. And if necessary, at any time you have the opportunity to go online and check your mail or contact business partners, colleagues or subordinates.

A lot of additional functions allow you to record further plans, with a reminder at the right time. Thanks to all its capabilities, the tablet has become an indispensable assistant in the daily life of almost every person.

What you can do on your tablet

It is difficult to imagine the modern world without the Internet and computers. Every day millions of users go online, communicate, exchange information, every year new models of computers appear in all their diversity. We are interested in the tablet, but let's first figure out what exactly we mean, and only then we will tell you what you can do on the tablet.

The same tablet that we see on the counter is a kind of tablet computer and is correctly called an Internet tablet. It looks like an enlarged smartphone, in fact, this is its main difference. Tablets are generally more powerful than their smaller counterparts, but not necessarily. You need to understand that all the capabilities listed below are the same capabilities of a smartphone, but, for various reasons, using a tablet in some cases is much more convenient and productive.

Internet

The main purpose of the Internet tablet, oddly enough, is surfing the Internet, communication in social networks and instant messengers. All tablets can connect to the Internet via 3G / 4G network or Wi-Fi. This is where the main advantage of small portable devices from desktops or bulky laptops comes in - portability. The tablet allows you to access the Internet anywhere and anytime: outdoors, in a car, train or plane. Even at home, it is much more convenient to lie down on a sofa with a light device than to sit at a computer.

Regarding ordinary surfing, everything is clear - navigation and control occurs as on a regular smartphone, but a larger screen gives more opportunities for "maneuvering" and, undoubtedly, a more comfortable pastime. You no longer need to zoom in on photos to see a friend's face, everything is perfectly visible. With regard to social networks and instant messengers, everything again depends on the size of the screen. It is much more convenient to press large buttons, read incoming messages, make video calls on the big screen.

Reading of books

Many people believe that books can only be read from a paper original or a special e-book. Yes, indeed, in most cases, a specialized device gives a clearer picture, does not overload the eye, but tablets in this sector have their own advantages. Firstly, an e-reader is another gadget that will take up space in a bag, a tablet in this sense is a universal thing and can be used for many purposes. Secondly, the tablet can transmit color, which is beyond the power of electronic black-and-white books.

Reading is one of the most useful gadget habits

All a tablet owner needs is to go online and download a program for reading books in various formats, and, in fact, the book itself. Most of the books are distributed free of charge, but there are enough paid ones, you can find them in the Play Market (for owners of an Android gadget) and the App Store (for Apple).

Reading video and audio files

The availability of films and various videos allows you to while away a huge amount of time. In this regard, the tablet can be considered the golden mean - it is large enough for you to watch a movie on it, and small enough to take it with you. A long trip to another city or a long queue at the hospital doesn't seem so boring anymore. Many take this opportunity to keep a naughty child busy.

Games

What else do you need a tablet for if not for games? Many people buy a tablet just because of them. Every year the power of iron grows, games are ported from desktop PCs to mobile devices, ardent gamers cannot miss the extra opportunity to enter their favorite game on their way to school or work.

In the Play Market and App Store, millions of game applications are presented for every taste and color, the user can choose something special for himself, sorting games by genre.

Work

Last but not least, internet tablets are used for work. Sales reps no longer have to carry piles of promotional materials with them, and office workers no longer need to draw charts on a chalkboard. Displaying everything you need on your tablet is ideal. For Android and IOS, there is a huge number of office programs that are quite convenient to work with. The user may well write small text, edit an image or video, draw a graph, or fill out a spreadsheet. Naturally, work in office programs is much faster if you use a mouse and keyboard, in this aspect the tablet is inferior to laptops and PCs.

The tablet is able to connect to cloud storage, which can be an indispensable feature when traveling. The device of the interface of mobile operating systems implies easy-to-manage case control and statistics on the tasks set and completed.

Navigation

Lost in the city? It doesn't matter, the tablet will help you get to the metro station or cafe. For some reason, many people forget about this method and are just looking for the right place on the map. A large number of drivers, including taxi drivers, very often use the tablet as a navigator.

Creation

What else can you do with your tablet? Developers of mobile applications have done their best for creative people, creating a huge number of programs for musicians, artists and even sculptors.

Having installed the desired program, you can play and keep a fresh melody, even when you are on the road. If your tablet supports a stylus or virtual pencil, you can sketch or sketch. Naturally, this method is not suitable for professional work, but making a small note when you need to quickly fix a thought - a tablet is indispensable.

Sport

There are also a huge number of apps for people who monitor their body that can help you exercise effectively and eat right. Some applications perform separate functions, for example, counting calories or distance traveled per day, while others provide a whole range of possibilities. In any case, excess control helps a person to achieve their goals and motivates them to take classes.

Conclusion

All tablet capabilities are limited by the operating system. Most of the market is occupied by Android and IOS, so all the functions described are related to them. If you want to have the functionality of a full-fledged computer, you can install Windows on your tablet. This means that you can install the same programs and operate the system in the same way as on a computer. If necessary, you can connect a keyboard and mouse, turning your device into almost a laptop.

Notes System Administrator Tablet PC functions (iPad and the like)

The tablet computer is a widely used device. It is a touch screen computer. There are tablets with docking stations, ultra mobile PCs, and just tablets. Any type of this device is multifunctional.

Among the important functions, it is worth highlighting the following features. First of all, this is the multi-touch function. Thanks to it, the touch screen of the computer is able to recognize several touches at the same time. With this function, device control becomes more convenient, the user gets the ability to scale, group, move, rotate objects using only typical gestures.

Multitouch opens up tremendous opportunities for games, and moreover, if necessary, it allows several users to simultaneously work on one device at the same time. Equally important is the function of connecting to the Internet. Each tablet has a built-in module that guarantees the availability of WiFi wireless Internet, of course, if you forgot to take such a thing as charging your ipad with you, then with a wireless connection you can quickly drain the battery and wait for the Internet, as they say, to your home. If there is no WiFi, then this is most likely not a tablet, but a simple e-book (although they already have a "Waffle" in them).

Another important internet interface that is not present in all models is the 3G module. With it, you can connect to the mobile Internet when it is impossible to connect to the regular Internet. At the same time, it is necessary to buy a SIM card of any mobile operator, choose a suitable tariff, from those that are offered specifically for tablet computers and in places where cellular communication operates, the user will be able to use the Internet. Among the additional functions that tablets may have, it is worth noting the GSM function, which allows you to write SMS, and receive and make calls. Thanks to this, the computer can be used like a cell phone.

Today this module is not found in all models. Another feature is Bluetooth, which enables the connection of various wireless devices, including wireless headsets. GPS helps to determine coordinates, user's location and speed. USB is used to connect a keyboard, printer, mouse, player, external hard drive, flash drive, phone, and so on. The HDMI function is required to display Full HD images from your tablet computer to a screen such as a TV. This will allow you to watch HD movies in excellent quality. Thus, thanks to its many functions, the tablet becomes a real assistant. These devices are the future and, most likely, in the near future, they will become even more affordable and gradually replace laptops and netbooks.

Overview of Tablet PC Features

The idea of a compact computer with a touch screen, which could be controlled without a mouse and keyboard, has excited people's minds for a long time. The first attempts to create such a product were made at the end of the dashing 90s, but none of the projects was able to gain any significant popularity. The reason for this was technical imperfection and absolutely exorbitant prices of tablets of that time.

And suddenly such a boom! Why all of a sudden now and why so abruptly? In order to understand the phenomenon of the frenzied popularity of tablets, let's first take a closer look at the tablet computer itself - what it is and why.

Text: Andrey SAMKOV.

Let's start with the fact that often under the same term "tablet computer" or simply "tablet" we mean several different devices. Often, when they say "tablet," they mean:

Unfortunately, what they did was not very suitable for practical use: it was not very convenient to use such tablets "on the run", since in terms of size and weight they differed little from laptops of that time (suffice it to say that the weight of the tablet is 90- x was about 3 kg).

This is understandable, because the developers were trying to create just the same laptop, but with a different control system. An additional problem was the low computing power of the then computers, and the control system on the touch screen requires much more computation than a trivial keyboard.

That is why control with the help of such a "dull" touch screen was, to put it mildly, inconvenient. In general, this class of technology quickly disappointed both consumers and developers.

The developers quickly realized that if a complex and expensive tablet still turns out to be a laptop, then why not do the opposite? Equip a "regular" laptop with a touch screen and a pivot hinge.

So, without unnecessary hassle, you can get a hybrid that combines the features of both classes of technology: the user's choice of control using a touch screen and a classic keyboard. Such devices took their market share, but, of course, they did not become a sensation.

With the appearance on the market of a special compact version of notebooks, dubbed the "netbook", the developers have repeated their trick with a rotating screen.

The convertible netbook appeared, but made even less impression on users than the convertible laptop. The fact is that Internet tablets are looming on the horizon. But about them a little later.

Another class of mobile computers that paved the way for the emergence of internet tablets are ultra mobile computers (UMPCs).

They are rooted in the Origami PC project, organized by such well-known companies as Intel, Microsoft, Sony, Samsung and several others.

The goal of the project was to develop a computer specification that would match the characteristics of a netbook and yet be small enough to be carried in a pocket.

The project was a partial success in the sense that the specifications were created, and mass models were even developed on their basis (in Russia, the Samsung Q1 is probably the most famous), but they did not gain really wide popularity, remaining a "toy" for enthusiasts.

One-touch access to the Internet!

And finally, Internet tablets. It is these devices that have become the most massive type of tablet computers that have rapidly conquered the minds of people around the world. It is the Internet tablet that is most often meant by simply saying “tablet”.

So what's the internet tablet phenomenon? Most likely, the demand for such products has matured naturally, it is not for nothing that netbooks were so popular just before the massive appearance of Internet tablets. But these are essentially computers of the same class, differing in the control system.

Naturally, the increase in the popularity of tablets was facilitated by the growth of their consumer qualities: the capabilities of computing technology have increased significantly, making it possible to build more compact and convenient portable computers.

On the other hand, you should not recklessly sweep aside marketing: Apple is famous for creating entire market segments on its own.

So on the Internet tablet market, everything was quite quiet and calm, for several years there were products from other companies, for example, the Nokia tablets of the n700 and n800 series were relatively popular.

But it was the release of the Apple iPad that literally blew up the markets; on the wave of popularity, interest in tablets as a "new" class of computer technology began to grow like an avalanche.

Tablets from the present

The current tablet market is experiencing an avalanche growth, and therefore the variety of different device variations is dazzling. Let's try to put things in relative order.

Screen

The first thing that a person who collides with a tablet pays attention to is its screen, which occupies almost the entire front panel of the device. According to the characteristics of the screen, tablets can be roughly divided into two groups:

Compact tablets with screens from 4 to 7 inches. These tablets are very convenient to carry due to their modest size, these tablets often have advanced functions of a mobile phone, and therefore such tablets usually act in this capacity as well. Typical representatives of this type of tablet are Nokia n770, Archos 7 and Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Tablets with a screen of 7-10 inches. This is the most common and popular screen size. Such a tablet, of course, is no longer viable in your pocket, but watching a video or reading from such a screen is much more pleasant. It is the 10.1-inch diagonal of the Apple iPad. This also includes Motorola XOOM, and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and ODEON TPC-10.

The appearance of tablets with a screen larger than 10 inches is in principle possible, but unlikely: such a tablet will become too bulky, it will become difficult to call it a mobile device, and this is, after all, one of the advantages of Internet tablets.

Operating system

Another thing that a tablet user has to constantly contact is the operating system. It is she who provides the human interface and the internal functionality of the tablet.

In addition, the operating system determines the set of software that this tablet will work with. Most tablets come with different versions of the mobile operating systems originally designed for smartphones:

Since the most popular tablet in the world is the iPad, accordingly, one of the most common software platforms is iOS, developed by Apple initially for iPhone smartphones and iPods.

The operating system Google Android is rapidly gaining weight in the tablet market, namely its version for tablets Android 3 (and its modification 3.1).

Google's operating system is free (tablet manufacturers do not have to pay Google royalties when using it) and can be easily transferred from one hardware platform to another, it is not surprising that many manufacturers of tablets and smartphones use it.

Since tablets are made on the basis of this operating system by many manufacturers (the most significant of them are Samsung, Sony Ericsson, until recently Motorola), it is only natural that today Android is the most popular OS in this market in the world.

Android is built on Samsung Galaxy Tab, Sony Tablet S, Motorola XOOM, Archos 7 and 9 and many others.

Tablets based on the MS Windows 7 operating system stand somewhat apart. And, as a rule, it is desktop Windows, not Windows Phone.

In principle, this can be understood: desktop Windows is put on tablets so that the user gets a familiar working environment on a mobile computer, this is perhaps the main (and almost the only) argument in favor of Windows 7 on a tablet.

Due to the fact that Windows Phone is not widely used and continues to lose popularity, according to analyst company Comscore, WP7's share has declined by 38% since the launch of the system in last fall. If at that time it owned about 8% of the US market, now it owns only 5.8%.

Most manufacturers do not want to associate their devices with an outsider, and even quite expensive, with a free alternative in the form of the rapidly ascending Android.

One of the representatives of the class of tablets based on Windows 7 is the already described in the magazine Consumer.Video & Audio ODEON TPC-10, as well as the new model ODEON, which should enter the Russian market in early 2012.

If we continue to compare operating systems in the context of Internet tablets, we find another big plus in favor of mobile operating systems: Apple and Google have created huge distribution centers especially for mobile users.

The App Store is available to iPad (as well as iPhone) users (as of October 2011, more than 500,000 programs are available for download, the total number of downloads exceeded 18 billion).

For owners of tablets and smartphones based on Android, there is an Android Market (as of July 2011, more than 250,000 programs are available, the total number of downloads exceeded 4.5 billion).

For Windows Phone users there is also a Windows Marketplace store, unfortunately, there are no exact statistics on it, but it is clearly several times smaller than the App Store and Android Market.

Nevertheless, users of the desktop version of Windows 7 are deprived of even this and are forced to search for the programs they need on their own.

CPU

Finally, let's not forget that a tablet is still a computer, which means that its functionality directly depends on the processing power provided by its processor, as well as on its architectural features:

Of all the manufacturers of processors for Internet tablets, only Intel makes chips compatible with the familiar on the IBM PC platform (x86-compatible).

Since Windows 7 can only run on this platform, the Intel Atom is at the heart of all Windows tablets. To date, the most advanced member of the Atom family is the Z670 processor. All other microprocessors for tablets are based on the ARM architecture.

IPad tablets use the A5 processor (iPad2) and A4 processor (iPad) designed specifically for Apple.

The development is based on a dual core ARM Cortex-A9 (A5) or an ARM Cortex-A8 core (A4). The A5 contains two main cores with modified ARM Cortex A9 architecture running at 1 GHz, and the powerful PowerVR SGX 543MP2 graphics coprocessor, which is 9 times more powerful than the PowerVR SGX 535 (from A4) graphics core used in the previous Apple A4 processor.

Since the details of the A4 / A5 architecture have not been disclosed by Apple, these processors are used nowhere except for the company's products, and only iOS is installed there, it is difficult to objectively compare these processors with competitors. We only know that, according to Apple, the new processor is twice as powerful as the A4.

Nvidia Tegra 2 rises as a new star in the market of hardware platforms for mobile devices. Based on independent comparisons (in particular, at Computex 2011) when comparing two tablets based on Nvidia Tegra2 (Motorola XOOM) and Z670 (Inte Marco Polo 2), when running OS Android 3.1, the former showed significantly better performance.

This is understandable: the ARM architecture was originally created for mobile applications, while the Intel x86 architecture in the course of a long evolution on desktop computers has acquired a large number of various additional instruction sets and other "improvements".

So now even the procedure for decoding instructions before executing them becomes a non-trivial matter, especially in conditions of limited power supply (a powerful processor requires capacious and heavy batteries, as well as a productive and equally heavy cooling system).

As you can see, the variety of modern tablets is quite impressive. Undoubtedly, everyone who wants to buy an Internet tablet will find a device "for themselves". We hope that our article will help you make the right choice.

Tablet device - how the "inner" world works

Today you will not surprise anyone with such a convenient and multifunctional mobile device like a tablet. Everyone knows approximately what functionality this device has, what can be done with it, how much is the approximate time of continuous operation ... But few have looked inside. We will try to eliminate this defect and briefly examine the internal structure of the tablet.

Internal content

Opening the case, you can see that there are very few components inside. The main motherboard takes up about half of the case space, the same is reserved for the battery. The entire plane at the front is occupied by a thin screen plate. And that's all - other small parts like sockets and connection connectors are often located right on the motherboard. There is only a vibration motor separately. Let's take a closer look at how the tablet works.

Motherboard

The secret to the small size of the device is minimal conversion and low power consumption. The motherboard of an ordinary computer carries many voltage matching and conversion circuits, there are even blocks responsible for these processes. In contrast, tablet design is the result of a maximum compatibility approach.

CPU

The small microcircuit in the center of the printed circuit board is the computing center. The size of a bridge controller in a "big" computer, this small chip is not equipped with a heatsink, much less a fan. It generates very little heat. But at the same time, it is a multi-core computing structure capable of performing hundreds of thousands of operations per second and more.

Around the processor of a personal computer are dozens of capacitors and power control circuits. There is only one block next to the tablet processor - the master oscillator. Even compared to the small processor chip, it looks tiny and inconspicuous.

Read-only storage

The place where the operating system is "flashed" and the user's data is stored. This is just one rewritable flash memory chip. Depending on the tablet model, it may have a different volume.

RAM

Memory block for intermediate data and calculations. Usually this is a pair of microcircuits that are even smaller than the ROM. The amount of this memory is used by programs and services of the operating system during the operation of the tablet. Here, intermediate processing of data received from cameras or a microphone is carried out.

Wireless modules

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are usually found at the very edge of the motherboard, most often in the corner. This is due to the need for an additional antenna and a buffer power supply. The antenna is a copper-plated strip of plastic. A small 3.3V battery acts as a power buffer.

Power management

The really worn-out unit is the power distribution center. The functions of this module include voltage conversion, control of the battery charge level, as well as voltage parameters coming "from outside" - from a charger, a connected computer or an external device. The functioning of all external ports and cameras depends on the correct operation of this module. This unit is built on a single microcircuit. Unsurprisingly, she often breaks down.

Touchscreen processing system

The screen, or rather, the working matrix complex is connected to its controller using a rather thin loop. It transmits all data from the sensors of the capacitive layer about the movements of the user's fingers. The task of the touchscreen controller is to process and convert the received signals into digital format. This data, in turn, is processed by the operating system and converted into visual reactions visible to the user, as well as corresponding actions.

These were devices and blocks that are located on the motherboard.

Tablet screen device

Structurally, the display consists of several layers. Today, screens with resistive technology are practically not found, so we will not consider them.

Capacitive touch screens use a simple principle. The sensing element is, roughly speaking, a grid of two layers of perpendicularly spaced conductors. They are very thin, and the mesh is so fine that it cannot be perceived by the eye. When voltage is applied to the conductors, the touchscreen controller fixes the level of the resulting field. The user holds up a finger. It is also conductive, therefore it changes the field of the conductors. By changing two signals - from different layers of the grid - the controller determines in which coordinates the touch occurred.

Another layer forms the image. There are several technologies based on different crystal orientations. For example, the IPS-matrix in the off state is black and opaque. When voltage is applied, the crystals rotate, allowing light to pass through. Depending on the angle by which the cell of one of the three composite colors is “rotated”, a point of the desired color is formed.

A matrix like TN-Film, roughly speaking, "twists the crystals in the other direction." When turned off, it is transparent.

The bottom layer is backlighting. Without going into details, this is a panel that glows with varying intensity depending on the voltage applied. This is where her work ends.

And the main layer, which you constantly run your fingers over, is a protective one. Due to the fact that the capacitive sensor does not require deformation to detect touch, today there are all kinds of designs - plastic film, plate, even a layer of tempered or sapphire glass.

Battery

If you describe the internal structure and principle of operation of a lithium polymer source, you can write a scientific article. The device of the tablet battery is complex, it necessarily includes a block of energy cells and condition monitoring. From the monitoring unit, data comes to the motherboard.

The control module can prohibit the operation of the battery if its charge has dropped below the technical limit. The battery can be started from a more powerful power source, but the tablet will burn if you try. Therefore, the power control of the motherboard and the battery monitoring unit work in tandem to prevent emergency modes.

Why are tablets different?

One may ask - why are the designs so different if everything is the same inside? Some tablets have all the connectors on one side, while others are evenly spaced. Somewhere the cameras are in the center, somewhere below or in the corner.

The answer is simple. It all depends on the developer and builders. It is easier to set up a production line where the machine will assemble the motherboard with all ports and connectors. The assembler will need to install the display, click on the board, the battery and connect everything with loops. And it will turn out - ports and buttons in a bunch, but cheap.

You can make separate boards for connectors, provide a place for them, move the cameras to separate seats. In a word, hire qualified and tidy personnel. But you get a comfortable device with well-thought-out ergonomics.

So the main thing in the tablet is not only the filling, but also the skill level of the assemblers and the diligence of the developers.

Tablet functions - Talking about tablets

Internet tablets are gaining popularity every day. This symbiosis of a phone and a netbook has entered our life well, because of its convenient capabilities.

What can a web tablet offer us? Let's take a look at the main functions of a tablet?

Using a tablet for the Internet.

Of course, this is the main function of the tablet - access to the Internet. What exactly has been done in the tablet for convenient use on the Internet?

Touch screen. On the one hand, it is not very convenient to move your fingers across the screen, somewhat obstructing the view, but on the other hand, with one hand movement, you can interact with the site, you can even say "feel" it.

Built-in Wi-fi, 3G modules. All tablets have wi-fi, which allows you to connect to hotspots and use fast internet. This is not to say that 3G is a novelty, but undoubtedly, over the past 3-4 years, the popularity of 3G has increased significantly. Almost all major mobile operators offer 3G Internet at reasonable prices and with excellent speeds. And, unlike wi-fi, 3G catches almost everywhere, which undoubtedly gives it great potential.

Webcam. It is useful not only to look like in a mirror. Client programs like Skype or FaceTime can use it to make video calls. A very handy function by the way.

Using a tablet for reading.

Again, the tablet's screen size makes it easy to read books or newspapers. The function of automatic screen rotation to any side will make reading even more convenient.

The operating system of the tablet allows you to install various reading programs on it. Different Programs - Offers different functions and a different kind of interface.

Using a tablet to take notes.

The relatively small size of the tablet allows you to take it with you almost everywhere. You can make your own notes, attach photos, videos or music to them. You can put programs for conveniently compiling a to-do or shopping list and take it with you to the store, for example.

Using your tablet as a GPS navigator.

Many internet tablets have a GPS module. If you install maps or navigation software, you can track your location, speed, take a convenient route, find the buildings and streets you want, and much more.

Using a tablet for photos, videos.

The tablet combines the functions of a camera and a player. Of course, you cannot compare the quality of photos and videos from the tablet's built-in camera and the quality, even from the cheapest camera or camcorder. But you don’t take your camera with you if you’re not sure that it will come in handy? The quality of the built-in camera of the tablet will be enough for ordinary, everyday tasks.

Use your tablet for entertainment and music.

Having a fairly powerful tablet, you can install 3D games on it. There are many genres of games: racing, action, strategy, logic, children, and so on.

Also, the tablet is convenient to use for music. Unless you have to run, of course. Still, the size of the tablet does not always allow you to listen to music as conveniently as on a small player.

In general, tablets today have great potential for development and use. Processors and memory are getting faster and more powerful, making your tablet smaller and more comfortable to use.

You can use the tablet for both work, planning, and entertainment, one might say rest.

A tablet computer is a compact device that is similar in characteristics to a regular netbook. But unlike the latter, the tablet does not have a keyboard - all commands are entered through the touch screen. Despite this, this portable gadget allows you to go online, read e-books, watch videos, listen to music, and spend time playing games. Next, we will look at the main features of the tablet computer, which have become the reason for its great popularity.

Unlike other mobile devices, the tablet has an increased amount of RAM and permanent memory, almost all the necessary connectors for communication with other devices, as well as a camera and audio software. These compact computers are equipped with Internet communication modules. Most of the processors used in them are made using multi-core technology. All of this hardware greatly enhances the capabilities of the tablet computer.

Each tablet runs on an operating system. For Apple and Android models, online stores have been created where you can download various programs that expand the capabilities of your laptop. By installing special applications, it becomes possible to create and edit text documents, images. If the Windows system is used on the mobile device, then the same programs that are designed for a regular Windows PC are suitable for it. The main thing is that the hardware stuffing of the tablet copes with the installed application.

The hardware capabilities of the tablet computer allow you to store and view videos in HD quality. To listen to audio recordings, you can use the internal speaker or connect speakers or headphones to your mobile device through the appropriate connector. The built-in camera in top models allows you to take photos and record videos of very high quality. In addition to the main camera, tablet computers are equipped with an additional camera on the front panel, which is called the front. It is used to make video calls, for example via Skype.

The touch screen makes working with the tablet a pleasure. It replaces the keyboard and mouse. Such screens are incredibly convenient, so they can be seen on modern cameras, payment terminals, game consoles, etc. The operation is extremely simple - you just need to touch your finger or stylus and the computer will immediately react as if you had pressed a button on the PC keyboard. Even a child can use such a screen, because the built-in interface with beautiful pictures is interesting and understandable even for him.

The use of the wireless content transfer function has expanded the capabilities of the tablet computer, allowing one touch to play any multimedia files on audio and video equipment that supports the data transfer standard. Just touch the icon on the touch screen, and the movie stored in memory can be viewed on the large LCD TV. Thanks to its compactness, the tablet has become an ideal companion for modern people on business trips and travels. If you carry a laptop with you, then you still need to find a place to work on it. The little assistant does not have this problem - you can even use it on the go, when you are standing in public transport. The main thing is to lean against something with your back so as not to fall.

Every year the capabilities of the tablet computer increase due to the improvement of hardware capacities and the release of new applications.
