Just a few years ago we couldn't do anything. Restoring a file manually, collecting it literally piece by piece is painstaking work that pays off only for really important documents. And if several are damaged beautiful photos from a family photo album or from a tourist trip? Spending hours of work of an expensive specialist to restore such files is irrational and wasteful.
But now we have a solution for such situations. Our laboratory uses a program to recover damaged files - Hetman File Repair. At the same time, the quality of restoration is amazing: it is often possible to “repair” photos that were not opened at all in any program.
What does the file repair product do? The program analyzes the headers, structure and contents of the file, trying to match all available sections. In some cases, matryoshka files come across containing multiple copies of an image in the same file. An example of such a format is the "digital negative" format, RAW.
Fixing photos in RAW format
So, we have a RAW photo that cannot be opened in the editor. What can be done here?
Let's look at the structure of the RAW format. A feature of this format is the storage of several copies of the same image at the same time. in the only RAW file contains both the pixel values read from the camera matrix in a "raw" form, and several copies of the same image in JPG format. Why is this being done? For implementation preview photos on the camera screen. Processing a picture in RAW format is quite a process that is quite capacious in terms of computing resources, and it is irrational to spend the limited computing resources of the camera on “development of the negative” every time the photographer wants to view the footage. Therefore, low, medium, and high resolution JPG copies of the image are included in the file.
From the point of view of a program that repairs damaged files, such a structure with multiple duplication of information is optimal. The binary stream of "raw" data takes up the most space in the file, so this segment is statistically most likely to be damaged. But we have three more JPG images! The program is able to extract and, if necessary, repair these images. If you manage to pull out a photo of yourself big size is already a victory. And sometimes it is possible to restore the entire RAW entirely.

Restoring corrupted files using the wizard

In the "Select files" window, you need to specify the damaged files that you would like to fix and save. Here you can add any number of files from various folders to the list of recoverable files, remove files from the list, or completely clear the list. You can also choose how to display the list of selected files ("Icons", "List", "Table") and use file sorting.
Then select the type of analysis to recover data. In most cases, it will be enough to use the "Analysis" function, which allows you to quickly eliminate damage to the logical structure of files.
The second type of data processing - "Research" - is used if it is necessary to analyze the file structure in more detail. This takes much longer, but allows you to recover even heavily damaged data by preserving the maximum amount of information in the original files.
In the next window, the wizard will prompt you to select the path for saving the recovered data (the folder where they will be saved), as well as define some more principles for saving corrected files on the selected media.
Restoring corrupted files with preview
If you decide "manually", without using the wizard, select the folder in the left part of the main program window that contains the files you need. The entire contents of the directory will be displayed on the right, and you can select the necessary files in it.
If the file is damaged, the program will not be able to display its contents. To restore its structure, use the menu "File" - "Analysis" or "File" - "Research" of the main menu of the program. After performing these functions, the files will be available for preview.
