Many happy tablet owners actively use Wi-Fi for everyday tasks. But from time to time, when trying to connect, a Wi-Fi authentication error occurs. The reasons why this problem occurs are usually due to inattention when entering data, a malfunction of the wireless equipment, or incorrect operation of the tablet. Let's consider solutions.

What is authentication

To begin with, you need to understand that authentication is the control of a security key and how the transmitted information is encoded. This is important so that no outsider is able to connect to the access point in your home. Security options include a strong password and the right encryption standard.

If you have an authentication error, the reasons may be the following:

  • Wrong network access password.
  • Your tablet and router use different types of encryption.
  • Inappropriate communication channels.

The most common error occurs when the password is entered incorrectly. Enter it as carefully as possible. You can check and change the security key in the router settings, where you can also change the channel and encryption. It is possible to change network access parameters without much effort even for a non-specialist.

Changing the security password

We have already written in detail. In short, you need:

  1. Enter the IP address, username and password of the router in the browser. You can view them on the back or bottom of the device or in the user manual. If you can't find it, type Win+R - cmd - ipconfig. The line "Main gateway" displays the address of the router. The default login and password is admin/admin.
  2. Go to the Wi-Fi security tab. In the "Encryption Key" or "Security Password" line, view the existing or enter a new password.
  3. On your Samsung or other Android tablet, turn on Wi-Fi, go to Settings - Wireless networks - Wi-Fi - hold down the name of the connection with your finger - Change this network. Check the "Show password" checkbox, enter it again, carefully checking with the one entered in the router.

Changing the Encryption Standard

If the error persists even after changing the key, then:

  1. In the router interface, go to "Security Settings", select "WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK" authentication type and "AES" encryption.
  2. In the tablet in the Wi-Fi settings, hold down the connection name - Delete network. Then reconnect.

Change the Wi-Fi channel

The wireless network uses the 2.4 GHz frequency. So that the signals of different equipment do not overlap, the router is able to work on 11 channels, automatically choosing the most suitable one. But sometimes failures occur, the signal is getting better, which can cause a Wi-Fi authentication error. To change the channel manually:

  1. Enter the router interface - Wireless network settings.
  2. Check that the region is correctly defined - Russia.
  3. In the "Channel" tab, select one of the 11. Test several times until the tablet connects successfully.

You can check the load on each channel using the Free Wi-Fi Scanner for Windows or WiFi Analyzer for Android utilities. Once launched, they will scan all available networks in the room and display the load on each channel. Choose the one that is not loaded at all or is busy at a minimum.

Just now I was having fun with the Wi-Fi network settings. (And probably will continue my entertainment in the near future.) I've been battling with an intermittent authentication error. I want to tell about it in my cozy LiveJournal. It may turn out that someone will benefit from this.

The main problem with this error is that there is no single recommendation for fixing it. One helps one, another another. Why is that?

In my opinion, the explanation is this: there are two main reasons for the appearance of an authentication error:

1. Glitchy hardware of routers (crooked Chinese chips and firmware).

2. Interference from neighboring Wi-Fi networks.

I did not accidentally put hardware glitches in the first place. According to my own observations: the microcircuits in the router (chip set) significantly affect the buggy of the device. It even happens that one manufacturer has a model with the same letter designation, but produced in two versions: for example, with the letter Y added on one chipset, and with the letter Z on the other. The first can be buggy, and the second can work without problems.

Therefore, if your Wi-Fi is buggy, and everything is set up as it should, then try to borrow a known-good router from someone. If, after connecting it, the glitches disappear - throw the problem router in the trash! Sad - but true!

There is, perhaps, only one situation when a simple hardware repair can be done at home. We are talking about replacing the electrolytic capacitor in the power supply of the router. Unfortunately, the echoes of the so-called capacitor plague still reach us today. What can you try to do? Open the power supply of the router. Inspect the electrolytic capacitor for swelling and/or leakage. If there are suspicions (or without them - that is, just for safety net) - replace the electrolytic (s) capacitor (s) with new ones. But this is if you know how to hold a soldering iron in your hands.

Next, we will talk about what can be done in a situation where even connecting a known-good router does not fix problems with Wi-Fi. In this case, we are talking about interference on the air, which is not easy to deal with. In apartment buildings, there is often a cloud of inconsistent Wi-Fi networks that interfere with each other. What to do here? It is necessary to increase the noise immunity (and foreign networks are interference for us) of your Wi-Fi network. And you can do it in different ways. Hence, there are many different recommendations.

Consider and comment on some of the popular tips, from the most simple and banal to more or less professional.

1. The simplest thing is to try to change the location of the Wi-Fi router in the apartment. The paths of radio waves are inscrutable. It's rare, but it can still help.
2. Another simple solution is to reboot the router. Sometimes it helps. The procedure is simple: turn off the router; wait 20 seconds; turn on the router. Often this advice works when the router is on 24 hours a day. But, in general,the need for frequent reboots is a bad sign. Often this is the first sign of the need to take the existing router to the trash and replace it with a working one. (See above.)
2a. The same solution can help in case of electrolytic capacitors starting to fail. The death of these little beasts can drag on for years. And here everyone decides for himself: either buy a new router, or look for buggy capacitors and solder them, or put up with it and periodically reboot the router.
2b. If you have to reboot the router too often, then this is a reason to visit the manufacturer's website and download new firmware from it. often

3. The number next tip is to increase the signal strength of your network. Scientifically, this is called increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by increasing the signal power in hardware. Some users attach special antennas to their router for this purpose. However, the gain from this is not great. (Wavelength in the Wi-Fi range is 12.5 cm, e.g..) It makes some sense to place the antenna in front of a metal sheet-screen. Radio waves do not pass through metal. Accordingly, the radiation pattern will be distorted in the direction of increasing the signal from the metal sheet. And, therefore, the antenna gain will increase. Just do not think that the antenna really amplifies something. At its core, any antenna is a passive device for matching the output impedance of the transmitter with the wave impedance of open space. When talking about the gain of an antenna, they mean an increase in the signal in a given sector of space compared to a hypothetical omnidirectional antenna (that is, having a radiation pattern in the form of a sphere). But a metal sheet-screen may not give any result. The fact is that the wave impedance of the antenna will change. There will be a mismatch in the output stage of the transmitter. In general, in this case, the screen is an ambiguous thing ...

You can put another router in the apartment in repeater mode. It's already more productive. But cluttering up the apartment with routers is somehow not comme il faut… Again, it’s not good for health. Yes, and the neighbors in the return can begin to increase the power of their Wi-Fi networks.

4. You can refuse the B / G / N mode on the router in favor of the B / G mode. Sometimes it helps. Of course, a lot depends on the intricacies of the hardware implementation, but theoretically, the narrower the band, the less interference we capture.

5. You can play around with different types of authentication/encryption. I have never studied them in detail, but again, theoretically, some algorithms can be more noise-resistant than others. It is often recommended to set WPA2/AES or WPA2/TKIP-AES. May I help. But not necessarily.

6. For authentication purposes, you can register the so-called “white list of MAC addresses” on the router. Only devices with the specified addresses will be able to connect to the network. In this case, you can even make the network insecure in terms of encryption and password.

How to find the MAC address of a device? If the device is already connected to the network, its MAC address can be found in the router configuration program or using the utility inSSIDer . Often, the MAC address is indicated on the packaging of the device or on a sticker placed on the bottom of the case.

7. And finally - ta-da-da-dam! - you can try to optimize the Wi-Fi channel number of your network. Many people start with this. And I would recommend starting with this. But the simple solutions mentioned above should also not be neglected.

To select the optimal channel, you first need to scan the reality around us to determine the parameters of existing Wi-Fi networks. Ideally, you need to do this several times, at different times of the day and on different days of the week. Neighbors, I suppose, do not live on the air all the time. They can also move away from the computer to, say, milk a cow.

You can scan the broadcast using different methods. You can run the utility on a laptop with a Wi-Fi module inSSIDer . You can switch the router to client mode (Client). I've been practicing with the Upvel UR-315BN router just now. There is no client mode in it, but there is a repeater mode. In the menu of this mode, there is a button " Search for Wi-Fi hotspots».

A common problem when connecting an Android device to a Wi-Fi network is an authentication error. There is also a notice: "", " Saved, Protected" or " Saved, WPA/WPA2 security". In this article, I want to tell you: what is the authentication procedure, why such an error occurs when connecting to Wi-Fi, and what are the ways to fix it.

Authentication procedure

Wi-Fi authentication is a security key verification. After entering the data (in this case, the password from the Wi-Fi access point), the identifier is checked. If it matches the specified one, then the device connects to the wireless Internet.

This procedure is necessary to prevent unauthorized access to a private Wi-Fi network.

Reasons for the error

There are only two main reasons why "Authentication failed" occurs when connecting to Wi-Fi on Android.

Advice! If you are sure that the password you are entering for the access point is correct and you are not mistaken when writing it, the problem is probably in the data encryption by the router. In this case, you do not need to do any manipulations on the tablet.

Important! The inability to connect Android to a Wi-Fi network and, as a result, "Authentication error", may be due to the unstable operation of the router itself. Due to overload, line failures at the provider, power surges, etc. the router may be malfunctioning. This is cured by a simple reboot of the device.

After installing update KB4103718 on my Windows 7 machine, I can't remotely connect to the server via RDP Remote Desktop. After I specify the RDP server address in the mstsc.exe client window and click "Connect", an error appears:

You are absolutely right that it is pointless to solve the problem by removing a Windows update, because by doing so you expose your computer to the risk of exploiting various vulnerabilities that this update closes.

You are not alone in your problem. For users of the English version of Windows, when trying to connect to the RDP / RDS server, an error appears:

An authentication error has occurred.

The function requested is not supported.

Why is this happening? First of all, I recommend that you read the article. In it, I described in detail why after installing the latest (May 2018) security updates on Windows clients, users may have problems connecting to remote computers / servers via RDP. The fact is that in the May security updates, Microsoft fixed a serious vulnerability in the CredSSP protocol used for authentication on RDP servers (CVE-2018-0886). In the event that the latest updates are not installed on the RDP server and it uses an outdated version of the CredSSP protocol, such a connection is blocked by the client.

What can be done to fix this problem

  1. Most right the way to solve the problem is to install the latest security updates on the computer / server to which you are connecting via RDP.
  2. Temporary Method 1. You can disable NLA (Network Level Authentication / Network Level Authentication) on the RDP server side (described below).

Disabling NLA for RDP on Windows

In the event that NLA is enabled on the RDP server side, this means that CredSPP is used for pre-authentication. You can disable Network Level Authentication in the system properties on the tab Remote access, unchecking "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication / Allow connection only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication (recommended)" (Windows 10 / Windows 8).

In this article, we will look at typical errors that occur on Android devices when trying to connect to Wi-Fi, and tell you how to fix them.

Typical Wi-Fi Connection Errors

When successfully connected to a wireless network, a message should appear under its name Connected. Solution: If WPA2-PSK is set, try changing it to WPA-PSK.

Reason #2: invalid security key.

Usually, if the security key does not match, the Android device will prompt you to enter a password. However, there are other manifestations.

Solution: enter the correct security key. Be careful with layout and register. It is strictly forbidden to use Cyrillic in SSID and passwords, and you can get confused in the registers. If in doubt about your password, temporarily set a 10-digit key on your router.

Solution: Test the network from a closer distance from the router. If the problem disappears when approaching the router, try to find a freer wi-fi channel and install it on the router. Then reconnect to the network.

  5. Check the region settings on your router. Please enter the correct region. Try to choose Russia, then USA, then Chile. This can affect the sensitivity of the receiver and the power of the transmitter. Keep in mind that many router models may not have a region setting.
  6. Install on the router WPA2-PSK security mode And AES encryption type. Save your settings and wait a couple of minutes. Delete the network on your Android device and try to connect to it again.
  7. Set Mode Mixed 11b/g/n for maximum compatibility with various devices and standards. Save the settings and try to connect to the network after 2 minutes. For reference: if you install 802.11n only, only those devices that support the standard will be able to connect to the router. n.
  8. Set the channel width setting to Auto. Save the settings and after a couple of minutes try to connect to the network again.

Attention! Use only Latin characters and numbers in SSID and security keys! If you use Cyrillic in these fields, you may encounter the following problems:
