What's new in windows 10 mobile. Universal apps, or UWP

The system made a lot of noise even before its appearance, and now, finally, the Microsoft enterprise, at a public appearance in New York, announced the deadline for the formal the emergence of Windows 10 Mobile. Release date - end of July 2015. It was also announced that this operating system will become available not only expensive smartphones, but also budget-class devices that meet her needs.

What happened before?

Microsoft representatives said that the main Windows variants 10 Mobile (released in 2015) were originally different. It was planned this version to be published in early spring 2015. But due to technical reasons, the date was postponed. This operating system can be used by those Cell Phones, on which there is a memory card from 8 gigabytes, as well as devices on which a modification of the OS called Phone 8.1 Lumia Denim was previously installed.

A little earlier, Microsoft has provided information on its website about which smartphones will be able to get Windows 10 Mobile in the first place. These will be devices 435, 532, 535, 540, XL, 735, 830, 930. It is not known why this list does not include a tablet phone, but in the program Insider Preview it is written that he can take part in beta testing.

Interface overview

Among Windows innovations 10 Mobile needs to focus on other than previous versions the sizes of "live" tiles in the system menu. The changes also affected the keyboard, or rather, the voice launch, the file administrator, Cortana assistant and the Camera, Maps, Outlook and Office applications. Period Internet Explorer passed, and now the main Internet browser is Microsoft Edge... Many complex attachments have been reworked.

Are available here and dialog messages... You can reply to them through notifications. By the way, the "Alert Center" itself connects to computer windows 10 and other mechanisms based on this OS, if they are assigned to the same Microsoft account.

Applications

We paid special attention to applications, therefore software versatile for all kinds of Windows devices. This innovation naturally led to two results coming out of this: put things in order in the market Windows Store and the Continuum function was born, which facilitates the work on the computer. A smartphone is connected via USB, then the monitor displays the functionality of the phone and all its applications.

The important news was that this system may gain great popularity among stable applications in the near future. Visual studio accepts a cipher created for Android and Java, as well as Simbion. We can say with the application Microsoft tools It's easy to almost completely migrate the cipher to Windows 10 Mobile without overhauling it. Visual Studio can do the bulkhead on its own, the linker will only need to take care of the functionality and reduce the power consumption, and in the case of conventional applications you don't even have to think about it - everything will work.

Not sure how to install Windows 10 Mobile? This will be described a little later. In the meantime, we will remind those people who are not in the know, this operating system is already available to many smartphones.

Thus, Mobile, which was released in Russia on July 29, 2015, is one of the newest operating systems in the world. Now let's discuss the feedback about the system in more detail.

Reviews

Discussing Windows 10 Mobile, which is presented in this article, it became clear to experts: people believe that the operating system has a bright future. At this stage, according to the same users, the system is still imperfect. Unfortunately, Windows 10 Mobile, the review of which proved that the system is still "bald", is not quite finished yet. On the this moment the developers are gradually fixing bugs, but still this OS still requires decent work, although it has its own advantages.

pros

In this way, Windows system 10 Mobile reviews have both positive and negative. "Alert Center" became the main positive feature presented by the OS. It makes available an extended list of toggle switches, erases some notifications, allows you to answer them. It is assumed that it would become the right decision 8.1.

Also among the advantages are:

  • First display. Outside desk type for work and a list of applications worthy of approval because this is exactly what appearance had Windows 8.1. You might think that this is a minor change, but this is only at first glance.
  • Joyce on the keyboard. A very interesting replacement for the cursor.
  • Downloading several applications at the same time in the "Market".
  • Newest system applications... It should be noted that this does not apply to all applications. This advantage is on the verge of both new opportunities and errors. These include latest apps for the "Office", mailbox and a calendar, record player, adding machine, clock, as well as an improved browser.

The newer messaging and contact apps don't take advantage of it.

Flaws

  • Scale selection problems: I mean unreasonable hyphenation of text in the store, too large or too small interface components. It looks unattractive. Hopefully this is just a bug and not a failed feature of the application.
  • Error in the "blind" of notifications. We can say that this property is reproached, but what to do if it is very striking in part incomprehensible symbols when lowering the "curtain", which then disappear. If this is done in order to show that they are there, then why the Expand button?
  • Keyboard errors are perhaps the most annoying bug in the system. If the text is typed manually, instead of specific letters, other elements may come out. Autocorrect often works incorrectly, as a result, words with capital letter in the middle of a sentence. The keyboard itself has a small size (much smaller than on 8.1).
  • Background apps are not working correctly. Everything here is very bad for dummies. When background setting application is done incorrectly, when the power saving is turned on, the chronophore (alarm clock) may not ring. In other words, if you turn off background work applications, some of them will send push messages.
  • Multitasking. In this menu (compared to 8.1), applications are closed for too long. Coupled with the absence of the “close all” command, this is a little upsetting. On opening of this menu automated display rotation becomes unavailable.
  • Lock screen error. After unlocking, the sensor may not light up or light up immediately, the date and time also appear with a delay.
  • There is no voice input.
  • There is no possibility of two SIM cards working at once.

So now how do I get Windows 10 Mobile installed?

Installation

We must immediately warn you that the installation of this system takes a lot of time. But everything is not as scary as it seems at first glance.

Windows 10 Mobile is installed as follows:

  1. First, it is worth confirming that the smartphone and the computer have the same OS version.
  2. Then you need to go through the registration procedure in the trial program Windows assessments- it is available to everyone. We go to the site and click "Start".
  3. We agree with the terms of the contract, click "Send".
  4. That's all, we are ready, we press "Phone".
  5. On the page Windows downloads Mobile Insider Preview Microsoft Enterprise again reminds that experiments inexperienced user can end badly for him touch phone... If everything suits you, see if your smartphone model is on the list of suitable devices.
  6. Next, install Windows application Insider.
  7. You can download it on the Microsoft website, or directly from Windows market by introducing into search string Windows Insider.
  8. After the download is complete, open the application, click "Get assemblies".
  9. Insider Fast files will arrive bald. As soon as they appear when choosing Insider Slow, applications will come already a little worked out.
  10. Next, you need to certify that you are responsible for the actions taken, and Microsoft is not responsible for them. In addition, the terms state that your actions may result in damage to the phone and loss of warranty. But don't be alarmed, the Windows Insider website has all the necessary information to fix your device, although it is difficult to understand it without instructions.
  11. Agreeing, you can exit the application, find the "Phone Update" button in the settings. Select "Check for updates", and an unexpected task may arise - the scan will not start due to error 80072f8f, which appears if the time and date of the smartphone is not synchronous with the time of the region.
If the phone indicates right time, and you, for example, have factory settings, then it may be because your phone is activated in a different area, which by default will appear as home.
It is worth preparing mentally for such difficulties. Sometimes there are a lot of them, there are answers to any question. In order not to gain difficulties, it is better to throw off the settings to the factory ones before it is done Windows setup 10 Mobile.
  12. The machine will find the last version of the correction, download it and recommend that you accept it. Agree, wait until the download is complete.
  13. You now have Windows 10 Mobile on your smartphone.

Summarize

As announced, Windows 10 Mobile, which was released in Russia on July 29, 2015, is already available for installation on many smartphones. It is still in the testing stage, so keep this in mind when downloading it.

The future of Windows 10 Mobile has become popular topic fans and critics alike ever since Microsoft announced that Windows 10 Mobile development would move to the “feature2” branch and stay there. While Microsoft said the change is minor, sources Windows resource Central draws a different story; Windows 10 Mobile development has been decoupled from the rest of Windows 10 on other platforms. But why?

Microsoft has separated development of Windows 10 Mobile from the rest of Windows 10 because Windows 10 Mobile is no longer required for what Microsoft is planning for Windows on mobile devices. Sources suggest that the next mobile Microsoft device what is called Andromeda OS inside the company will work; Windows version which strives to be modular enough to work on any form factor and, as a result, eliminates the need for a Windows 10 Mobile edition. In this way, Microsoft more doesn't need a Windows-specific version of Windows 10, which means Windows 10 Mobile is now redundant.

This is great news except for one thing. important detail; existing Windows smartphones will not receive updates to this "Andromeda OS".

Feature2 branch

According to the sources, the feature2 branch exists to continue to support what Microsoft internal documentation calls "legacy ARM chipsets" for the next year and a half. The main goal of the feature2 branch is to continue serving mobile Windows devices 10 through 2018 with bug fixes, security updates, and new enterprise-specific features. It is also reported that Microsoft will support the new UWP APIs that will be introduced in Redstone 3 and Redstone 4 on PC.

The reason these APIs are "reversed" and not originally introduced is because feature2 is technically Redstone 2 (but frozen). When Microsoft split Windows 10 Mobile into feature2, it also froze OneCore development in Redstone 2. Now, given that Windows 10 Mobile won't recreate the rest of Windows 10 development, this means Windows 10 Mobile will support Redstone 2 for the remainder own life.

So, to compensate for this, Microsoft will support new UWP APIs that will be introduced in Redstone 3 and Redstone 4. This means that if an app developer is targeting any new UWP APIs that will be introduced in next couple Windows releases 10, these apps will continue to work with feature2 Windows 10 Mobile. That should give Windows 10 Mobile that extra boost in the next year or so.

This is why there is no Skip Ahead setting for Windows 10 mobile devices. There is simply nothing to miss. The only Windows 10 Mobile development is Redstone 2.

It is indeed true that Microsoft continued to compile Redstone 3 builds for Windows 10 Mobile for a while, but only to continue developing CShell on small engineering devices... However, sources said this is no longer the case since last month as CShell will not be available for existing Windows smartphones... It's also worth noting that Microsoft's efforts to bring new APIs to Windows 10 Mobile are only planned until Redstone 4, but that could change.

App support won't last forever

Once APIs stop receiving calls, Windows 10 Mobile devices will very quickly lag behind the rest of Windows 10 when it comes to supporting UWP apps. As developers start integrating the new APIs coming in Redstone 5, these apps won't be able to run on feature2 with Windows 10 Mobile, which means devices like the Lumia 950 and HP Elite x3 will quickly lose support. applications. Microsoft may continue to serve Windows 10 Mobile with security updates in 2018.

Microsoft will continue to release production builds of Windows 10 Mobile (outside of the Insider Program) and may also continue to align them with PC releases like Fall Creators Update... But since development has been split between Mobile and Desktop, Microsoft may choose to release mobile updates on your own schedule if he wants to.

In short, Microsoft will support Windows 10 Mobile for the foreseeable future to serve its remaining users.

Future Windows platforms 10 Mobile has been a hot topic among users and reviewers since Microsoft announced and has remained on the feature2 branch since then. Microsoft called the change minor, but there is another opinion. Windows development 10 Mobile has been split from Windows creation 10 on other platforms. Why was it done?

Windows 10 Mobile no longer fits in with Microsoft's plans for the mobile market. A source inside the company claims that the company's next mobile device will run on the operating system, which is still internally called Andromeda. It is a version of Windows that is modular in nature and can run on devices of different form factors. As a result, the need for separate version Windows 10 Mobile is dropped.

Microsoft no longer needs an operating system exclusively for smartphones, so Windows 10 Mobile can be ditched. This good news except for one detail; existing smartphones on this system will not receive the Andromeda update. In that case, what awaits them? First you need to understand why you need the feature2 development branch.

feature2

According to internal sources Microsoft, this update exists to support, as stated in the documentation, “outdated ARM processors"Over the next one and a half years. Feature2's primary goal is to continue serving Windows 10 Mobile devices throughout 2018. Bug fixes, security updates, and new functionality for the Enterprise edition will be released here. New Generic APIs will also be ported, which will appear on computers in Redstone 3 and 4.

The reason for porting these interfaces instead of native support is that feature2 is basically Redstone 2. When Microsoft split Windows 10 Mobile into feature2, it stopped development of the OneCore core for Redstone 2. Since Windows 10 Mobile will no longer be developed in parallel with others. Windows editions 10, it will forever remain on Redstone 2.

As compensation for this, Microsoft will port new interfaces. This means that if app developers use these APIs, they can run on Windows 10 Mobile. This will extend the life of this version of the system.

Therefore, the Skip ahead option in Windows Update was not available on mobile devices, since Redstone 3 and 4 will not be released here, which means that there are no preliminary builds for them that could be obtained. Only Windows 10 Mobile feature2 is under development.

Microsoft has been compiling Redstone 3 builds for Windows 10 Mobile for some time, but only to continue developing CShell on lightweight engineering devices. last information o says that development was discontinued in July and CShell will not appear on existing smartphones on Windows. Microsoft will only port the new programming interfaces to Windows 10 Mobile up to Redstone 4, but that may change.

Application support doesn't last forever

With the end of porting programming interfaces, Windows 10 Mobile devices will quickly lag behind more modern ones in terms of universal app support. Developers will start using more modern interfaces in versions of Redstone 5 and beyond, after which their applications will not be able to run on feature2. This means smartphones like the Lumia 950 and HP Elite x3 will quickly lose support. modern applications... Regardless, they will receive security updates in 2018.

Microsoft will continue to release Windows assemblies 10 Mobile outside of the pre-test program. Perhaps this fall, the new version will be released simultaneously with Windows update 10 Fall creators Update on PC. Since the development of the system on smartphones and computers is separate, the schedule may also change.

As such, Windows 10 Mobile isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future. Microsoft hopes to prepare new mobile devices before discontinuing Windows support 10 Mobile. This should not happen until the end of 2018.

The company's next attempt should be done from scratch, as existing Windows smartphones will not receive updates to the new operating system. As in due time Windows Phone 7.8, feature2 updates will be small and targeted to the few remaining users on the system. Microsoft will focus on new Andromeda devices that will also have CShell support.

Already for a long time Windows smartphone users are constantly faced with all kinds of rumors about the future mobile platform Microsoft. Just a few days ago I gave a new reason for discussion. She revealed some details of the development current versions Windows 10 Mobile. In this article, I would like to analyze the information currently available about Microsoft's strategy in the mobile market.

Note: this article does not reflect the official opinion of the Administration and contains only the thoughts of the author.

Market of mobile operating systems in July 2017

Before considering the future, it is a good idea to study the present. As of July 2017, the share of Windows smartphones among all mobile devices was 0,85% .

In particular:

  • Russia - 1.75%
  • Kazakhstan - 0.52%
  • Belarus - 2.46%
  • Ukraine - 2.68%

In quantitative terms, there are from 23 to 28 million users of Windows devices in the world. According to the latest figures from AdDuplex, about a fifth are running Windows 10 Mobile, while the rest are running Windows Phone 8.1. At complete absence sales of new smartphones on Windows current the situation cannot please WP fans. The share of Microsoft's brainchild is shrinking and shrinking, which negatively affects the interest of developers and manufacturers.

What will happen to Lumia and today's Windows 10 Mobile

Putting all the facts together, we can assume that the death of a 32-bit mobile windows is just part of the transition to 64-bit Windows 10 Mobile. And along with it - at the same time to restart mobile strategy Microsoft with new trump cards, like some major changes in mobile Windows (no one says that Windows 10 Mobile will remain the same), x86 emulation, or a mythical Surface Phone.

It should be added that today all this is nothing more than a hypothesis. Microsoft is often unpredictable, so no one can be 100% certain about these theories.

Prospects for the new mobile platform Microsoft and Surface Phone

Some publications believe that as soon as the Surface Phone is released with support for x86 emulation and something else, Microsoft's mobile direction will immediately take off. Is it really so?

Think of Surface tablets. It took Microsoft several years and two unsuccessful generations of devices to assess the market, analyze its capabilities and create something really popular (lose more than a billion dollars along the way). At least the same will be the case with the "ultimatum mobile device"which we are promised. It is unlikely that it will take off right away, and there are good reasons for this.

Let's go back to the beginning of this article, namely to current state Universal Windows Platform and developers' interest. Mobile device will be needed anyway mobile applications... In the case of Windows, only the UWP platform and WinRT API can provide them (Silverlight applications, judging by the leaks, will disappear into oblivion). Support for x86 Win32 emulation will do nothing, since desktop programs are not optimized for small screens. And Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and many other developers do not release their applications for Win32.

Already, there are not so many supported applications on WinRT. Even many popular services like WhatsApp or Telegram do not have WinRT clients. In a year, when the share of WP will decrease even more, there will be even fewer programs on WinRT. Accordingly, the new ultimatum device risks becoming a dialer that can launch Win32 programs in Continuum mode. It’s not very good if such a device should take over the market and not fail. That is why I would not say that new Microsoft's attempts go out on mobile market(those as it is now represented) will surely be crowned with success.

We just have to be patient and see what Microsoft can offer the world soon.

In February 2015 Microsoft officially announced the release new version its mobile operating system - Windows 10. To date, the new "operating system" has already received several global updates.

However, with each major addition, more and more old devices become outsiders and no longer receive official "recharge" from developers.

Officially, this OS can only be installed on limited list smartphones with more early version operating system. However, in practice, the list of gadgets that can take Windows 10 on board is much wider. Installing Windows 10 on Android

Front full reinstallation the operating system is strongly recommended to determine the tasks that the updated device should perform:

In case you still need to have a full-fledged "top ten" on board, before installing a new OS, make sure that your device has enough space for a new heavy system. Pay attention to the characteristics of the processor of the device. Installing Windows is only feasible on processors with ARM architecture(does not support Windows 7) and i386 (supports Windows 7 and above).

Now let's go directly to the installation:

  1. Download the sdl.zip archive and special program sdlapp in .apk format.
  2. Install the application on your smartphone, and extract the archive data to the SDL folder.
  3. Copy the same directory to your system image file (usually c.img).
  4. Run the installation utility and wait for the process to complete.

If your smartphone receives official updates, there will be no problems installing the new version of the OS. Users of earlier Lumia models will also be able to update their smartphone without special problems... Much more deplorable things are for Android users, because their smartphone is simply not designed for Windows installations, which means that with a forced installation of a new OS, the owner of the phone runs the risk of getting a fashionable, but very useless "brick".
