How does the scanner program work? What important qualities of working with the scanner are not described by the basic technical characteristics? Errors, difficulties, nuances

Office work is not the only requirement for using various devices computer related. These include a scanner, etc. These skills are essential in Everyday life any mothers, as they very often help to fulfill homework with a child or get the necessary picture or text from a book.

But, even if you have a computer and a scanner, it does not mean that you can immediately work with them. Of course, when you buy with this office equipment, you will receive instructions on how to work with the scanner. But for a person who does not have experience in operating such devices, it will be difficult to master it on his own. Therefore, for those who doubt their abilities, in this article we will highlight how to use the scanner correctly.

First of all, you need to figure out how to turn it on and configure it to work.

How do I connect the scanner to my computer?

It is quite natural that it must be connected to both the power supply and the computer. After all, the scanner reads a two-dimensional image and presents it in electronic form so a PC monitor is needed to see the result.

To connect the scanner to a computer, insert its USB port into one of the slots on the rear panel of the power supply. After that, we turn on the connected devices and proceed with installing the drivers. To do this, just insert the installation disc and follow the prompts that appear. If you have installed everything correctly, then your "smart" machine will see the new device. You can understand this by the presence of a scanner icon on the taskbar.

Based on what you need a scanner for, you should also install programs on your computer through which you will work with it: scan and recognize text - ABBYY FineReader, with pictures - Adobe Photoshop or XnView. Typically, programs that have a scan function are available on the device driver disc.

Working with the scanner

Let's start scanning.

  1. Raise the lid and put the paper carrier on the glass with the pattern (text) down.
  2. We launch the scanning program or press the button on the device itself.
  3. Using the lines, we edit the size of the preview image that appears on the screen of your computer. You can also change its resolution (the larger, the clearer the result will be) and color range or even black and white.
  4. V open window programs, we press the "scan" button, there is also "start" or "accept", and wait until the scanner beam passes in one direction and back. The larger the original drawing and higher set resolution, the slower the readhead will move. So be patient.
  5. When the already digitized version of your paper original is displayed on the screen, it should be saved. To do this, select "File", and in the window that opens later, click "Save As". We name the file with the scan result as we need and select the folder where it should be saved.

When using ABBYY FineReader to digitize a document, it will be enough to click "Scan & Read" and all steps will be performed automatically.

Scanner Precautions

Since the surface on which the paper original is placed is glass, it should be handled very carefully:

  1. Do not press hard. Even if you need to scan a spread of a book that does not fit snugly against the surface of the device.
  2. Avoid scratches and stains. They will reduce the quality of the resulting image. To avoid this, do not put dirty papers on the glass. And if this nevertheless happened, then when cleaning the surface, you cannot use powder products.

Scanner (English scanner) - a device that creates a digital image scanned object. The resulting image can be saved as a graphic file, or, if the original contained text, recognized by a text recognition program and saved as a text file.

Let's consider the principle of operation of flatbed scanners as the most common models. The object to be scanned is placed on the flatbed glass with the scanned surface down. There is a movable lamp under the glass, the movement of which is controlled by a stepper motor.

Rice. 28. The device of a flatbed scanner.

The light reflected from the object, through a system of mirrors, enters the sensitive matrix (CCD - Couple-Charged Device), then to the ADC and is transmitted to the computer. For each step of the engine, a strip of the object is scanned, then all strips are combined by the software into a common image.

Depending on the method of scanning the object and the objects to be scanned, there are the following types of scanners:

Tablet- the most common, since they provide maximum user-friendliness - high quality and acceptable scanning speed. It is a flatbed with a scanning mechanism underneath a transparent glass.

Manual- they do not have an engine, therefore, the object has to be scanned manually, its only advantage is its low cost and mobility, while it has a lot of disadvantages - low resolution, low operating speed, narrow scanning bandwidth, image distortions are possible, since it will be difficult for the user to move the scanner at a constant speed.

Leafy- a sheet of paper is inserted into the slot and pulled along the guide rollers inside the scanner, past the llama. It has smaller sizes, compared to flatbed, but can only scan individual sheets. Many models have a device automatic feed that allows you to quickly scan a large number of documents, and in a number of models - on both sides in one run.

Planetary- used for scanning books or easily damaged documents. When scanning, there is no contact with the scanned object (as in flatbed scanners).

Drum- used in the printing industry, have high resolution(about 10 thousand dpi). The original is placed on the inside or outside wall of the transparent cylinder (drum).

Slide scanners- as the name implies, they are used for scanning film slides; they are produced both as independent devices and in the form of additional modules for conventional scanners.

Barcode scanners- small, compact models for scanning product barcodes in stores.

Scanner specifications

Scanned surface format: A4 (standard printed sheet), A 3, slide scanners for 13x18 and 18x24 film formats ...

Optical resolution. Resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Two values are indicated, for example 600x1200 dpi, horizontal - determined by the CCD, vertical - determined by the number of motor steps per inch.

Interpolated resolution. The artificial resolution of the scanner is achieved using software. It is practically not used because the best results can be obtained by increasing the resolution using graphics programs after scanning. Used by manufacturers for advertising purposes.

The speed of work. It is measured in pages per minute, which means pages of a certain format and certain resolution scanner, from among the possible.

Depth of color. It is determined by the quality of the CCD matrix and the ADC capacity. It is measured by the number of shades that the device is able to recognize. 24 bits corresponds to 16,777,216 shades. Modern scanners are produced with a color depth of 24, 30, 36 bits. Despite the fact that graphics adapters cannot yet work with a color depth of more than 24 bits, such redundancy allows you to save more shades when converting images in graphics editors.

Major manufacturers: Fujitsu, Mustek, Hewlett-Packard ( HP).

First of all, let's give a simple and straightforward definition of a scanner. Scanner - a device for transferring an image from a paper (physical) carrier into a digital form for further work with it.

That is, in most cases, what do we see during the scanner operation? An image is scanned (photographed) on paper (a sheet of paper, a barcode on a product, a credit card, a business card, a printed photograph, a slide), and using application programs is saved on a computer in one of the usual formats jpg, bmp, pdf and others. Further actions depend only on our needs: editing and preparing a photograph for printing, recognizing text or simply printing it as an image.

Depending on the design and purpose of the scanner, all of them can be divided into several types. Briefly about each of them.

Tablet

The classic, familiar to everyone and every type of scanner for scanning documents, books, photos different format. This type scanner is the most convenient and versatile for office and home needs. At the same time, the ratio of the price and quality of the images obtained is pleasantly pleasing. For such a scanner, a huge encyclopedia volume or a one-page A5 document will not be a problem. Most often, the scanner has a compact size and a removable top cover.

Lingering

A compact scanner option that is always at hand. With the help of a special drum, the document is pulled through the scanner, while obtaining a high quality image. Due to the design features and limited functionality such a scanner is more suitable for working with documents outside the office and will be unsuitable for home use.

Manual

Any of us at least once, but have seen one of the varieties of a hand-held scanner. A barcode scanner that scans and recognizes the barcode of a product and then converts it into a specific amount on a check. Reading scanners help you recognize and pronounce a particular word, which is useful for people who are learning a foreign language or having reading problems. Text scanners or scanners notebooks have a built-in text recognizer, which allows you to scan, recognize and store a large number of pages of text in memory - convenient when there is no laptop at hand.

Film Scanner

If you are still photographing with a film camera, then a film scanner will help transfer the image from the negative to digital form, without resorting to printing the photo. Some models of flatbed scanners are equipped with a slide module.

3-D scanner

Scanners for creating 3-D models of real physical objects with their subsequent processing or printing on 3-D printers.

By far the most popular are flatbed scanners, which can be found on almost every PC user as a standalone scanner or as part of an MFP. It is about flatbed scanners that we will continue to talk about: consider the features of control, typical malfunctions, the most popular flatbed scanners and programs for scanning and saving digital copies of images.

The most popular models and brands of scanners in offices on this moment

Technological progress and time have made scanners available not only for office use, but also for ubiquitous home use. V the given time more and more users are turning to the store to buy an inexpensive and functional scanner for scanning images, documents or old films. Buying a scanner separately, not as part of an MFP, is especially justified if you already have a printer at home or the requirements for scanned documents will be high.

Among the most massive and popular manufacturers of office equipment in this segment: Canon, HP, Epson. Manufacturers such as Kodak, Microtek, Xerox, Fujitsu-Siemens in most cases supply more expensive and functional models scanners for office use.

Let's consider some of the most popular inexpensive models suitable for home and office use.

Canon CanoScan LiDE 210

Classic flatbed scanner model with excellent characteristics and a low price. For $ 100, we are offered an A4 scanner that works from USB cable, that is, power and data transmission goes through one USB cable... Scanner specifications are standard for this price range: maximum scanning resolution 4800 * 4800 dpi, 48-bit color depth, 5 standard buttons on the control panel and fast automatic scanning and saving of a document at 300 dpi in 10 seconds. Canon's software tools can help you remove noise like dots and scratches from your photos.

The most simple, compact, easy-to-use and inexpensive scanner model.

HP ScanJet 300

Another compact and inexpensive scanner with similar characteristics and capabilities. Connecting to a computer with via USB 2.0, intuitive and convenient control scanner, the ability to automatically scan, copy and save images, save to PDF format and sending by e-mail by pressing just one button, small dimensions and weight, ease of connection and setup are the main advantages of the HP ScanJet 300.

Additional software included will help you process images or recognize text in a document.

Epson Perfection V500

Another reason for the increasing popularity of scanners is the film scanning feature. It's no secret that you can't escape digital photography, but most families have a whole arsenal of films in stock, the frames of which capture a lot of pleasant memories. If earlier we would have to run to a photo studio and order a pair from each frame, spend fabulous money, today, thanks to the universalization of scanners, all this can be done at home if the scanner has an adapter for films and slides.

Epson's Perfection V500 is one of the mid-range models that can be used to set up an amateur photography studio in your home. In addition to the standard set of scanning capabilities, you have the ability to scan high-quality films and slides, both standard 35 mm and medium format. Special software will provide practically automatic operation scanner and correction of the resulting images.

In addition to the slide module, which is built into the scanner lid, there is an automatic document feeder, which will allow you to leave 30 documents for scanning and take care of other problems, while the scanner, in cooperation with proprietary software, does all the work itself very quickly. ReadyScan LED technology reduces scanner warm-up time to zero, which makes this scanner model even more attractive for office use, where efficiency plays an important role.

Consider separately a couple of lingering compact scanners... These models are more compact in size and a scanning mechanism (the document is pulled through the scanning area with a special drum).

Epson WorkForce DS-30

We will not exaggerate if we call the scanner from Epson WorkForce DS-30 a pocket scanner. This model broaching scanner works with A4 documents, has minimum dimensions, with a weight of only 300 grams, which makes it easy to carry it with you in case documents need to be scanned outside the office. The scanner is connected to the PC using conventional cable USB 2.0, while the speed characteristics of the device are impressive - just 13 seconds to scan one A4 sheet.

Additional utilities will help you to recognize the text of scanned documents, save documents in PDF format, customize the scanner control to suit your needs.

Canon DR-C125

In this case, we are dealing with a conveyor scanner for the office. And don't be confused by its compact size and non-standard J-path for document feeding. The scanner works from a 220 V network, which will not allow using it outside the office, but noticeably speeds up its work: in color two-sided Canon scan DR-C125 is ready to output up to 25 pages per minute, and in black and white this figure reaches 50.

Another row distinctive features:
- the ability to scan a document up to 3 meters long;
- automatic feeder for 30 pages;
- daily resource - 1500 scanned pages;
- the ability to scan business and credit cards with embossed;
- a rich set of applications for image processing and text recognition.

How to connect a scanner and install drivers

Take your time to connect and turn on the scanner. Read the instructions and brochure for connecting the scanner. Most often, the scanner is connected after installing the driver.

V general case, the sequence for setting up the scanner can be divided into several main stages (for example popular model Epson Perfection V500 flatbed scanner):

  • We unpack the printer and check the presence of all components.
  • Install the scanner driver from the supplied disk. Do not connect the scanner before the drivers are installed and additional utilities.
  • Preparing and turning on the scanner. At this stage, we unlock all the shipping locks, remove the protective and shipping tapes, connect the scanner cover (if available), connect the scanner to the network and to the computer using the appropriate cables, and turn on the scanner using the toggle switch (button) on the scanner body.
  • Test scan. We put an arbitrary document or photo on the glass of the tablet, carefully cover it with a lid and press the "Start" button on the scanner control panel. If the scanner was connected and configured correctly, the result will be the scanning process and the window for saving (editing) scanned images.

Typically, the manufacturer, along with the documentation for the scanner, provides illustrated step-by-step instructions on how to properly install the scanner. Following the manufacturer's recommendations is a guarantee of successful scanner installation.

Nuances in the process of installing the scanner driver and additional utilities

If the driver disc is not included in the kit, then latest version drivers should be downloaded from the manufacturer's official website.

Insert the disc that came with the scanner into the drive and wait for the autoload. If you can't wait for autoload, go to "My Computer" and right-click on the DVD / CD drive icon. In the context menu that appears, select the Startup item. If this step did not help, then you should manually find and run on the disk the file responsible for installing the driver (usually setup.exe).

If necessary, install additional utilities for working with the scanner and document processing offered on the disc. If they turn out to be convenient - great, if not - they can be easily removed and replaced with more functional ones.

How to interact with the scanner? Frequently asked Questions.

Scanner controls. What and when to press?

If the scanner is powered from the USB-connector of the computer, then the control of such a scanner is carried out programmatically through standard or special computer applications... There may be a minimum number of scanner controls.

Scanners powered from a 220 V network, in most cases, have standard set buttons (controls).

Let's consider the design of the scanner and the main controls using the example of a flatbed model from the Epson Perfection V500.

An inoperative indicator indicates a disabled or inoperative scanner. If the indicator is blinking orange, then an error occurred during operation (the scanner is not properly connected, one of the transport locks is locked, and others).

Which side and in which orientation should the document be placed?

The text of the document should be oriented downwards, towards the glass backing, and the upper right corner of the document should be positioned according to the direction arrow. Typically, this arrow is located near one of the corners of the scanner glass substrate. The correct orientation of the document will save you from unnecessary document handling manipulations.

To scan a one-page document:

  • Raise the scanner lid.
  • Place the document to be scanned face down with the reference angle indicator. Please be aware that a few millimeters near the edge of the flatbed may not be scanned. For fidelity, back off 3-4 mm from the edge, if possible and fundamentally for the document being scanned.
  • Lower the scanner lid gently to avoid disturbing the position of the document with the flow of air.

How do I scan so that the curved text is visible (for thick books)?

There are times when the thickness of the book is large, and the binding is rather hard. In such cases, it is not necessary to try to cover the book (magazine) with a lid. To get a good quality picture, you will have to press the book with your hands so that the pages adhere to the scanner substrate as much as possible. If the size of the book is smaller, then the free areas can be covered with white sheets of paper.

To scan a thick document.

  • Detach the Slide Scanner Unit.
  • Place the scanner cover in an upright position.
  • Gently pull the scanner cover upward until it is completely detached. Later, when scanning a book or thick edition, the functions of the cover will replace your hands. However, do not press the source excessively against the glass substrate of the scanner.

How do I scan a large document?

If the scanner allows you to take a picture of A4 size, and the required document is of a larger size, then fold the document several times and scan all the fragments. Later, in a graphic editor, the original picture can be restored.

How do I replace a fax with a scanner?

If you are faced with the task of urgently sending a fax, but there is no fax, then the scanner will help out no worse. Everything is extremely simple, because after scanning and digitizing a document or image, it can be sent by fax using special services on the Internet.

How do I clean my scanner?

If, due to intensive work, the quality of the resulting images has noticeably deteriorated, there are traces of spots on the glass substrate of the scanner, other noises, you should clean the scanner.

  • Before cleaning, turn off the scanner at the power switch, disconnect the power cord and USB cable. Wipe off dust, grease, and other debris from the outside of the scanner.
  • Lift the lid and clean the platen glass. A dry, soft cloth is sufficient to remove dust. If the glass appears greasy stains, fingerprints and other dirt - use a small amount of special detergent (no alcohol or thinner).
  • Detach the mat for scanning opaque documents. Before detaching, check the position of the transport lock of the slide module - it should be in the open position.
  • Clean the slide module window, if necessary.
  • Return the backing to former place... For a secure fit, it fits under the tabs on the scanner cover. The outer side of the substrate is always white.
  • Lower the scanner cover into horizontal position and connect the scanner to your PC.

How do I transport the scanner?

  • Lift the cover, set the transport lock of the slide module to the locked position.
  • Disconnect the scanner cover cable.
  • Place the transportation lock in the locked position. This will secure the scanner carriage during shipping.
  • Remove all documents from under the scanner cover.
  • Pack the scanner in the packing material. If the original packaging remains, transport it in it. Do not transport the scanner in an unnatural position.

How do I replace the scanner lamp?

Over time, the scanner lamp burns out or burns out, and its brightness decreases. The dim light of the lamp will not allow high quality scanning of photos and documents. Lamp replacement should only be done at service center manufacturer.

How to scan a document for the first time.

Let's take a look at the traditional ways to scan documents. The recommendations are suitable for those who need to scan for the first and last time, and for those who are going to often use this kind of technique in the future.

Scanning using the software capabilities of Windows 7

This option is suitable for the especially lazy and in the case when there is simply no time to buy and install specialized utilities for scanning and recognizing documents. If the scanner drivers are installed, then the scanning process can be carried out in a few mouse clicks.

1. Start - All Programs - Windows Fax and Scan
2. In the open window, click "New scan".
3. Dialog box allows you to select one of the connected scanners, scan type (color / black and white) and image resolution.
4. After pressing the "Scan" button, wait for the scanner to complete its work. All scanned images will appear in a list at the top of the program area.
5. To save the received images, select the required image with the left mouse button, and with the right mouse button call context menu, in which we select the item "Save as ...". We set the location for saving, file name and format. Ready.

Office 2007/2010

Unfortunately, while working in text Microsoft editor Office Word does not have a dedicated button that can be used to scan and insert the required image into the text of the document. However, there is such a possibility. Consider the sequence of actions:
1) In the "Insert" tab, find the illustration command group. We find among them and click on "Clip".
2) The "Clip" task pane will open in the right corner, in which we find and launch the "Arrange Clips ..." menu with the left mouse click.
3) In the window that opens, click on the "File" menu and select the "Add clips to organizer" submenu.
4) In the drop-down menu, select the line "From a scanner or camera ...". A window for selecting parameters will appear in front of us.
5) In the parameter selection window, select the currently connected scanner and the resolution of the scanned image. You can choose between a higher resolution "For printing" and a simplified version of "For transmission over the Internet".
6) Press the "Insert" button and wait until required document or the photo will be scanned.
7) The scanned image is found in the "List of Collections" (in the left part of the window is a tree-like list). Usually it is located in the "My Collections" section in the folder with the same name of the scanner model.
8) Click on the arrow next to the found image and select the "Copy" menu item.
The scanned image is placed on the clipboard and can be pasted (Ctrl + V) by you both into the document and into graphics editor for further processing.

ABBYY FineReader

The most popular program for scanning and recognizing documents ABBYY FineReader has not only an intuitive control menu, but also a wide range of options. Let's deal with the main task that we have to perform with FineReader - scanning and saving documents / images. By default, we assume that the program is already installed on your computer. With some scanner models, FineReader may come with a driver and additional software disc.

Before starting work, connect the scanner to the PC, turn on the scanner and put the document on the glass backing of the scanner, close the lid, launch FineReader (in our example, version FineReader 11). The welcome window contains a number of basic tasks for the scanner. If the welcome window does not appear, then select the "New task ..." item from the "File" menu.

Let's consider the most common tasks for which a scanner is used - scanning an image with subsequent saving and scanning a document with subsequent text recognition.

We scan and save the image.

  • Choose among the new tasks the item "Scan and save the image".
  • Selecting scan settings. For preview you can click the Preview button to position the photo correctly on the scanner.
  • We are waiting for the scanner to cope with its task. At high resolution scanning, the process may take several minutes.
  • We close the dialog box, after which we are immediately offered the window for saving the image and the choice of parameters.
  • We select a place on the hard disk where we will save the image, enter the file name and select one of the formats in which the result will be saved.
  • We are waiting for the image to be saved and close the program. Files large sizes can persist long time, wait until the file is saved and only then close the program.

We scan the document and recognize the text.

  • Selecting the "New task ..." item in the "File" menu, select the "Scan ..." task.
  • Select the scan settings (for a document, a sufficient resolution of 300 dpi, scanning mode is black and white or grayscale).
  • Click on the "Scan" button and wait for the scanner to complete its task. If there are several sheets in the document, we repeat this operation the required number of times.
  • After scanning all sheets of the document, close the dialog box.
  • Typically, FineReader will try to recognize all the text on the page itself. Unnecessary text fragments can be deleted by right-clicking on them and choosing the "Delete Region" submenu.
  • If some fragments of the text were missed by the program, they can be selected in manual mode by choosing the menu "Areas - Select area - Select area text".
  • Holding down the left mouse button, select the required area with the text.
  • Select the language of the text of the document.
  • After all text elements on all pages of the document are highlighted, you can start recognition. In the "Page" menu, select the "Recognize page" submenu. If there are several scanned pages, then select the "Recognize" submenu in the "Document" menu.
  • On the right side of our window is the recognized text of the document, which can be copied and used as intended.
  • If the text of the document is clearly visible and has no blots, then all of the above actions can be done in automatic mode by selecting the item “Scan to Microsoft Word". The document will be automatically scanned, recognized, and the text placed in new document Microsoft Word.

The advantage of FineReader over others is that it is not focused on specific manufacturer or scanner model - with any scanner the scanning process will always look the same.

Hewlett Pacckard

Most often, the set with HP scanners comes with the Readiris character recognition utility, which is a complete analogue of the more functional and reliable FineReader. It is suggested to use ArcSoft PhotoStudio for image processing. In this case the best option for scanning images or documents are software tools Windows, Microsoft Office or ABYY FineReader, which we wrote about above.

But, it is quite possible to get by with the buttons for automatic scanning located on the front panel of the scanner:
- Scan and save the image to a PDF document.
- Scan a document for sending by e-mail. The resulting image will be automatically attached to a new email.
- A copy of the document. The scanned document will be immediately printed on the printer.
- Scan and save document.

Epson Scan

For the happy owners of a scanner from Epson, the manufacturer has taken care of convenient work, and, complete with drivers, offers proprietary EPSON Scan software to select the appropriate scanning mode.

Let's figure out how and in what mode to scan documents using EPSON Scan. After installing the device driver and connecting the scanner to your PC, start EPSON Scan. At the top of the program window, 4 scanning modes will be available to choose from: fully automatic, office, home, professional.

Fully auto mode... After pressing the "Scan" button, the scanner, using the software, will itself determine the type of document and the required settings for scanning, scan and save the images to the folder specified in the settings. To find where EPSON Scan saves images, click the button with the "Customize ..." settings on the main screen of the application, and then "File Save Settings ...", where the path for saving scanned documents will be indicated.

Home mode

After selecting Home Mode at the top of the screen, the window for selecting scan settings will become available. It is necessary to set the document type (photo / text), scan mode (color / black and white), scan destination (for saving, for printing, for sending by e-mail), select image correction functions. After selecting all the settings, press Scan and wait for the end of the scan.

Office mode

This mode assumes scanning text documents, so the range of settings is slightly smaller. You need to select the scan mode (color / black and white), the desired scan resolution and document source (ADF / Flatbed), and several image correction settings.

Professional Mode allows you to fine-tune the settings for scanning documents and images.

Useful Tips for Using the Scanner

What shouldn't you do? Cautions

  • Observe the measure. Trying to get the best quality when scanning a magazine or book on flatbed scanner, do not overdo it with the force of pressing the image source against the glass surface. You can damage not only the scanner lid, but also the glass backing, breaking which will render the scanner unusable.
  • Metal is not a friend to the scanner. Make sure that the documents you are scanning do not have exposed staple ends or staples. A scratched glass backing on the scanner will leave artifacts on scanned images over time.
  • When leaving, close the "doors" behind you. Do not leave the scanner cover open, even for a short time. The glass substrate does not approve of contact with dust and debris, which will immediately settle there. In addition, pets or curious children can break out with pleasure and ease open lid scanner or scratch the glass backing.
  • Do not slam the "door". When scanning individual documents, hold the scanner lid to prevent it from dropping or popping - careful use of the equipment will extend its life. The scanner lid is usually quite flexible and non-locking, which allows you to remove and replace it if necessary.
  • We sweep the traces behind us. Don't leave documents inside. Scanned a document - take it from the scanner, and then start processing the received images. Forgotten documents, in best case, will take a lot of time when trying to find them in an emergency. In the worst case, valuable documents can be found by children or pets and hidden elsewhere.
  • We abide by the letter of the law. Don't use the scanner for "bad" things. Always bear in mind the liability assumed for document forgery using office equipment and software applications.
  • Respectful attitude. Do not use abrasive materials to clean the glass backing. Only a soft dry cloth or glass cleaner. No alcohol or cleaning solvents. Contamination of the glass substrate is easier to prevent than to dispose of.
  • Do not get in - it will break. Do not try to open the scanner case unnecessarily if you want to keep it working. You do not need to lubricate or spray lubricants inside the scanner.
  • Caution 220 V. Unplug the scanner from the power supply before routine cleaning of the scanner body or glass backing.
  • Microclimate. Do not place the scanner in direct sunlight or near heating appliances. Warming up by the sun or a radiator will not make the scanner work faster, and the white glossy coating can burn out over time, sudden temperature changes disrupt the normal operation of the scanner.
  • Crazy hands. Do not attempt to repair the optics or mechanics of the scanner without proper experience and skills. Warranty or post-warranty repairs will leave a better chance of success.
  • Do not hurry. If you remember that you need to scan another page, and the scanner has already been turned off, do not turn it on right away. Wait about 10 seconds for all scanner mechanisms to return to their original position. Suddenly turning the scanner on and off may damage the scanner.

What is allowed when working with the scanner?

  • Read the user manual and remember all warnings. The reward is long and reliable scanner service with a minimum of problems.
  • Save backup drivers on disk. After reinstalling the system, you will need them again, and disks with drivers tend to be lost forever, and look for the version you want the Internet is not always convenient and possible.
  • Reinstall drivers. If the operating system has automatically recognized the scanner and installed the drivers for it, do not relax. These could be standard universal drivers for the scanner, with which a particular model may not work very clearly and not to the maximum of its capabilities. The last stable version drivers from the manufacturer's website or disc - ideal.
  • Protect the scanner from dust and dirt. If you use the scanner very rarely, then it is easier to remove it from working area table and get it only when necessary. If the scanner is needed all the time, then try to protect it as much as possible from contact with liquids, food, and pets.
  • Make a memo for the scanner. Write down the basic parameters and settings for scanning a photo or text document... Over time, the optimal parameters are forgotten, and you have to reinvent the wheel.

Outcomes

The scanner is an indispensable office assistant. With the help of this peripheral device, you can perform a number of useful tasks: replace a broken copier, fax, create a home archive of digitized films and previously printed photographs, scan and recognize the text of any book or document in any of the languages.

The key to stable and trouble-free operation of the scanner is correct installation driver, software, and optimal scanner settings. The above steps are easy with the instruction manual, dedicated brochures, and software disc supplied with your scanner.

The key to the durability of the scanner is compliance with all safety measures and careful use of the scanner. Remember that the most important element, which is located in constant contact with documents and our hands, is the glass substrate of the tablet. Contamination of the glass substrate is easier to prevent than to remove. During work, make sure that no third-party and abrasive objects, liquids, dirty documents, and fingerprints get on the glass surface. Use only specific cleaning agents and a soft cloth to clean the tablet glass.

Unlike a printer, modem, shredder and other peripheral devices in the office, the scanner is the least maintainable. Lamp replacement or lubrication of moving parts should only be carried out at a service center. Do not panic if the cover of the scanner is accidentally ripped out, as usual this option intended for manufacturers to scan books and thick magazines, and is not a breakdown.

Use the scanner for lawful purposes only and when scanning valuable documents remember to remove them from under the scanner cover.

A scanner is a mechanical device that allows you to convert various objects (text, image, photo, documents) into digital format(more precisely, in a picture) with their subsequent saving in the memory of a computer device.

We will talk about what a scanner is, adhering to the following plan:

The word "scanner" came to us from the English language: scanner - from scan, which can be translated as "closely examine, examine".

Scanner

Different levels of reflection allow the scanner to create a digital copy of the scanned object. There are scanners that can scan not only an image on paper, but even bulk objects.

There are several types of scanners. However, the most popular are the devices that allow you to work with text and graphic documents.

Most budget low-cost models are devices tablet type... Here the scan (or photocopy) proceeds as follows.

A sheet of paper with the information on it is placed on a special transparent window (glass) of the scanner and is pressed from above with a dense cover. Then a stream of light rays is sent to the sheet, which are reflected from the scanned image and captured, recognized and converted into a digital copy.

The main element of the scanner is a matrix that captures and recognizes the image. It is of two types:

  1. CCD and

First type CCD - Charge Coupled Device - scanning an image using sensitive elements called CCD sensors(charge coupled device).

The model of the first type has a matrix with a carriage with a built-in backlight lamp. A system of focusing systems (lenses) collects reflected light. To obtain color image, it is divided into components of the color spectrum and captured by photocells.

This allows you to get rich and vivid images at the exit. Moreover, tight pressing of the sheet of paper with the scanned image to the scanner window is not required. Since the luminous flux has sufficient intensity to cover short distances. And this circumstance is very important for simple devices for widespread use.

Information in such scanners is processed at a fairly high speed. The disadvantages are the short lamp life and the need for an external power supply.

Second type CIS - capital letters from Contact Image Sensor - translated as "contact image sensor".

A carriage with photocells and LEDs is built into the CIS type matrix. In the process of scanning, it slowly moves along the copied object, turning on alternately LEDs of different colors (red, blue, green), which makes it possible to form a color picture.

Such models are highly reliable. Moreover, their cost is relatively low. The main disadvantages of the device include the need for tight paper pressure to the scanner window and low scanning speed.

The main characteristic of these devices is the so-called color girth depth (24, 32, 42 bits) and resolution, or simply resolution. The more bits in the resolution of the device, the better the quality of the resulting image will be. Resolution is indicated by XXX (dots): YYY (carriage steps), for example, 600: 300 dpi (bits per inch).

The first video shows how to prepare the scanner and document for subsequent scanning.

Video 1. "How to prepare a scanner and document on the HP Laser Jet M1005 MFP"

The second video shows you how to scan and post-process the resulting scanned file, again using the HP Laser Jet M1005 MFP as an example.

Video 2. "Scanning and processing the scanner on the HP LaserJet M1005"

The first part of the second video below is a textual description.

Start scanning

Before using the scanner, you must

  • connect the scanner to 220V,
  • and also connect the scanner to a computer, usually through a port.
  • It is also important to press the power button on the scanner, if there is one.

Then, on the scanner window, you need to correctly put the document for scanning (down with text or a picture on the window, pressing it against the corner that is shown in the diagram printed right next to the scanner window).

So, we assembled the hardware, connected it, and proceed to its programmatic control on the computer. To do this, press the "Start" button. In the Start menu, click on "Devices and Printers". A window opens, as in fig. one:

Rice. 1. Where in Windows 7 can I find an MFP (printer, copier, scanner in one bottle), if it is connected to a PC

In fig. 1 number 1 designates a printer (+ scanner, + copier), which is connected and ready to work. Green check mark in fig. 1 shows us the status of the printer (+ scanner), that this particular printer is the "Default Printer".

On the printer (+ scanner), click the RMB (right mouse button). A context menu will appear, as in Fig. 2:

Rice. 2. How do I start scanning?

In this menu we find the option "Start scanning" (number 1 in Fig. 2). The "New scan" window will open (Fig. 3):

Rice. 3. Window "New scan" in Windows 7

Five scan settings

1) Before starting scanning, you can make settings if necessary. Let's start with the parameter “ Color format"(Number 1 in Fig. 3). By clicking on the small triangle (number 1 in Fig. 3), you can select one of the formats:

  • Colored
  • Shades of gray
  • Black and white

I chose the Color format as I prepared to scan a color postcard.

2) The next parameter is “ File type"(Number 2 in Fig. 3). This refers to the type of the file that we receive as a result of the scan. If desired, you can choose the formats:

  • BMP (Bitmap)
  • JPG (Picture JPEG)
  • PNG (Drawing PNG)
  • TIF (Picture TIFF)

I have selected the type "JPG (Picture JPEG)", as this type allows you to store the file in a more compressed form, and saves space on the hard disk.

3) The parameter " Resolution (DPI)»Is designated by number 3 in fig. 3.

The lower the resolution you select, the worse quality scan. The minimum resolution is 75. The maximum for this device is 1200.

The higher the resolution, the better quality the resulting scan. But the scan will take longer and the resulting file (scan) will have a larger volume, that is, it will take up more space on the hard disk.

4) The parameter " Brightness»Highlighted by number 4 in fig. 3. You can adjust the brightness of the scan using the slider. I have the brightness set to 25, slightly to the right of the middle of the scale.

5) Scan parameter " Contrast»Marked with number 5 in fig. 3, adjustable with a slider. In my case, the contrast is 0, that is, exactly in the middle of the scale. Brightness and contrast are selected empirically. No precise recommendations can be given here.

Press the button "Start scanning" (number 6 in Fig. 3). After the scan is completed, a preview of the scan will appear (a reduced size copy of the scan for compact presentation to the user) and along with it a field in which it is proposed to give the received scan a name.

In my example (Windows 7, HP LaserJet M1005 scanner) the resulting scan is located on the computer in the "Pictures" folder.

You can, if necessary, process the resulting scan: delete unnecessary, add labels and more. Video 2 describes in more detail, for example, how to cut off extra white fields on the resulting scan.

On other devices, preparing the scanner, preparing documents for scanning, scanning itself and subsequent processing of scanned images is done in a similar way.

The top row of buttons is for menu selection options that are required when setting up a printer or scanner.

1 in fig. 4 - Entering the menu appears after pressing the "OK" button.

2 and 3 in Fig. 4 - Moving through the different options in the menu is carried out using the left / right arrows, which are located on either side of the "OK" button. The same button ends the selection from the menu.

4 in Fig. 4 - If the user changes his mind about using the menu (he is satisfied standard settings), then you need to click on the pink button "Cancel".

5 - “Number of copies” - sets the number of copies.

6 - “Lighter / darker” - adjusts the color to lighter or darker.

7 – “Extra options copy ”- you can set, for example, the scale.

8 - “Start copying” - we start the copier (copy) of the document previously placed in the device.

Answers to 12 "easy" questions about the scanner

1) What is a copier printer scanner?

This MFP - Multifunctional Device, "three in one". In other words, a printer, scanner, copier in "one bottle", which is called MFP.

2) What does a scanner do in a printer?

A scanner is needed in a printer in order to convert text, an image, a document from paper into digital form, into a picture, i.e. to the file that can be sent, for example, by e-mail or presented as proof that you have this or that document "in your hands" in paper form.

For example, sometimes in the Internet bank, in the accounting department, when preparing negotiations, in order to carry out any actions, they require to send a scan of a document (scan of a signed contract with a seal, scan of a birth certificate, etc.).

3) What better MFP or printer and scanner? What's in the box with a scanner?

MFP (multifunctional device) is a printer, scanner and copier.

Therefore, an MFP is better than a printer and a scanner for the reason that three in one (3 in 1) is better than two in one (2 in 1).

With the exception of breakdowns... If the device is one, and it breaks down, then the user is deprived of all capabilities (printer, scanner, copier) at the same time.

A complete set with a scanner means that in addition to the printer, the device also includes a scanner.

4) Which is the best printer or scanner?

At the printer and scanner different functions, so the question "which is better" is not correct. The printer prints documents, pictures, and other files that are on the computer on paper.

The printer prints files from the computer on paper. The scanner does the opposite: it converts the information that is on hand in paper form into a file (ie, into a picture, into a digital form).

Together, the printer and the scanner complement each other: translation from "digit" to paper, and translation from paper to "digit".

5) What is a scanner driver?

Scanner driver is software (software), i.e. these are the programs with the help of which the scanner "from iron" turns into a controllable device.

If your computer does not have a scanner driver, then this may be one of the reasons why the scanner is not working.

Typically, the scanner driver is checked for the first time the scanner is connected to the computer. Recently, drivers are automatically downloaded from the Internet (if the Internet is connected) the very first time the scanner is connected to the computer.

If this does not happen, then it is worth remembering that a disc with drivers may have been attached to the scanner when it was sold. Then the scanner drivers are installed on the computer from this disk.

There is also a complex option. First, the drivers and programs for the scanner are installed from the disk supplied with the scanner, and then these drivers and programs are also additionally updated from the Internet.

6) What is scanner resolution? What is Scanner Resolution?

This parameter indicates the quality with which it will turn out digital image scanned original (see number 3 in Fig. 3).

The higher the resolution, the more accurate the digital copy (scan) will be, it will be more similar to the original. However, scanning will take longer, and the size of the resulting file will also be large.

At a lower resolution, scanning is faster, the size of the resulting file is smaller, and the quality is poorer.

The PC user chooses the resolution himself, depending on the purpose of scanning. As a rule, it is recommended to set the resolution not too high, for example, 300 dpi.

7) What is a flatbed scanner type? Lingering type of scanner, what is it?

V tablet scanner, the original is placed on the scanning window and covered with a cover. The original lies motionless under the cover and moves inside the scanner. In this way, scanning is carried out.

Flatbed scanners can be either stand-alone devices or can be part of multifunctional devices: printer, copier, scanner.

V lingering the original is fed from one end to the other end of the scanner. The scanner itself is stationary at the same time. In this case more likely the original may be jammed, jammed, damaged.

But the mechanism of the broaching scanner turns out to be simpler than that of the flatbed, it works longer. In broaching scanners, as a rule, you can put documents in what is called a bundle. And they will be automatically fed for scanning one by one. This is its convenience compared to a flatbed scanner.

True, already exist multifunctional devices flatbed scanners that can also stack originals. So manufacturers continue their endless competition for consumer preferences.

8) The scanner won't scan, what should I do? The computer (laptop) does not see the scanner, what should I do?

Check the following points:

  • Connecting the scanner to 220V.
  • Whether the scanner is turned on (the scanner may have its own power button).
  • Connecting the scanner to a computer (usually via a USB port).
  • Check if the scanner driver is ready to start as follows:
  1. move the mouse to the scanner image in the "Devices and Printers" window,
  2. take a short pause,
  3. a small window appears with inscriptions indicating the status of the device, which must be connected and ready to work.
  • If this is the first time you are connecting the scanner to your computer, make sure you have a scanner driver.

9) What to do if the scanner gives an error? What is a Scanner Error?

For a start, it is better to restart your computer, close unnecessary windows, disable all extra programs and devices. And again try to scan the document or picture.

If this does not help, then the simplest thing in such a situation is to "google", i.e. search for the answer on the Internet:

  • Highlight the error code (or "paint in blue") that the scanner produces.
  • Copy the highlighted error code, for example, using the Ctrl + C hotkeys.
  • Insert the error code into a search (for example, Google, Yandex), for example, using the Ctrl + V hotkeys.
  • View information about the error and apply it in practice.

10) The scanner does not scan well, what should I do? The scanner scans faintly, what should I do? The scanner writes that the parameter is set incorrectly.

Change scanner settings (Fig. 3): color format, resolution, brightness, contrast. Optimal settings is selected by the PC user empirically.

I set up my scanner for several hours trying different variants settings until I stopped at the parameters:

  • color format,
  • file format.jpg,
  • resolution 300 dpi,
  • brightness 25,
  • contrast 0.

11) The scanner says it is busy

If the scanner is shared from multiple computers, it can be used in turn. Till previous user does not finish scanning, this access cannot be obtained.

If the scanner is in individual access, on a personal PC, then you need to check if you accidentally opened public access to it via the Internet. In the jargon of system administrators, this is called "share the scanner", that is, "share the scanner" from the English word share - share.

You can check this by right-clicking on the scanner image in the "Devices and Printers" window, then select "Scanner properties" or "Printer properties" (for multifunctional devices) from the menu.

In the "Properties: type of scanner or printer" window that opens, on the access tab, there should be no checkmark next to the inscription " General access to this scanner (printer) "

12) Antivirus Scanner- what is this?

Antivirus Scanner - this is no longer a device, this is a program that has nothing to do with everything that is written above!

An antivirus scanner checks and treats the infected operating system computer. It does not conflict with antivirus program installed on your computer.

There are various anti-virus scanners, for example, Dr.Web CureIt! or Kaspersky Security Scan, more details. Antivirus scanner is also called a curing utility.

A scanner is an office device designed to analyze, read information and transfer it into digital format. Information received on a computer using this device is called scans, or scan copies.

Transfer process graphic or text information in electronic view is called scanning. That is, this equipment performs reverse printing operations - it transfers information from paper to a computer in the form of a file.

The area of their application is wide, ranging from home use and ending with the creation of printing. It does not allow you to make a copy of the document immediately, but only after processing on a computer, unlike a copier, which immediately prints the result.

What are the scanners

There are quite a lot of types of devices for scanning. At least the most basic and modern, seven categories.

Film scanner

They are designed to recognize images imprinted on the negative, film for photos or slides. Such a machine can only scan a transparent image.

This variety must have certain properties. The first is permission... V modern models this parameter ranges from 4000 dpi and above. Therefore, the images that are obtained when working with them have maximum accuracy.

The second parameter is optical density... The equipment works with films and slides different format... However, it maintains high speed and quality of the output image.

Depending on the cost, it is equipped with various additional functions ... For example, color correction, dust and scratch removal, fingerprint removal and many others.

Laser scanner

Such a device is widely used to read various barcode... This is what makes it possible to lead uncontrolled monitoring specially programmed zone. For example, in shops, stowaways, to monitor an object, etc.

This technology allows you to create a 3D model of any product, building or other object without any drawings.

Hand-held scanners

It is mainly used to work with a small amount of text material. Scanning is carried out due to the fact that the handle is carried out slowly over the working area.

Exists many modifications such a scanner:

Large format scanners

This device is used to scan information from large formats... For example, technical documentation of designers, architects, builders, etc. This species is quite mobile. They are easy to move, lightweight and compact.

One of the varieties of a large format scanner - plotters which are mainly used in offices, design offices and the advertising printing industry.

Professional scanners

The fastest kind of scanning equipment. It is mainly used in educational, scientific, financial and other administrative institutions.

This device is capable of operating in a continuous stream, automatically feed originals documents for scanning. It has high quality file processing, image editing function.

Book or planetary scanner

Used for scanning without contact with the original... Most often, it is used to digitize books and images of historical value. Exactly contactless work allows you to quickly and without damage to translate necessary information to digital format.

Flatbed scanner

The most common and accessible view equipment for digitization. It is used all over the place. Suitable for both home use and work in organizations. Capable scan any documentation up to A4 format.

How does the scanner work and how it works

The standard device is a portable rectangular plastic case with a hinged lid on it. Under this cover is glass surface on which the sheet to be scanned is placed.

Inside the equipment consists of a movable carriage with a mirror system, lens and illumination lamp. When the light from the lamp hits the original being scanned, it is reflected and hits the optics inside. The received electrical impulse contains information about the shape, color and other parameters of the original.

All this information goes to the computer and decrypts special software drivers. After that, on the monitor you see a scanned image that fully corresponds to the document that you loaded into the scan device.

How to use the scanner

Turn on the equipment. Connect it to your computer with a dedicated cable. After the device is connected, click the " Start»On a standard panel in a PC. The item "All programs" is required, then click on " devices and printers"(Or use the search in the system).

Click on " Scan"In the lower left corner of the opened program window, and then select" New scan "on the toolbar.

A new dialog box will open in which you must click the list " Profile"And select the" Documents "line. This section will automatically display the default scan settings, if you wish, you can change them and preview how the scanned copy will look. To do this, click "View".

To start the scanning process, click the " Scan».

Important! Correct work possible only if there are special software drivers that correspond to the brand of the device. They can be downloaded from the official website or installed from the included disk.

It should be noted that the procedure is the same for printers with a built-in scanner.

Basic settings and precautions

There are several main important parameters, they are the same for all devices:

  • File type... The resolution of the file in which the scanned image is saved on the computer. For example PDF, JPEG, etc.
  • Permission. A parameter characterizing the detail of the resulting digital copy. The more this property, the large quantity memory is required to store it.
  • Scan type... Determines the color depth of the image. There are types such as black and white scanning, grayscale, color and auto.
  • Brightness... Used to adjust the detail of the image. The standard value is 0, the adjustment range is -50 to 50.
  • Contrast... Increasing this value emphasizes the light and dark areas of the picture. When decreasing, on the contrary, they brighten and fade.
  • Duplex scanning... This option will copy both sides of the document.
  • Auto-rotate image. Automatic reorientation of the received scan result.
  • Skip blank pages. Eliminate pages without information from the final document.

Precautionary measures using:

  1. Use only the power supply included with the device.
  2. Do not leave the equipment plugged in after using it.
  3. Do not connect the scanner to the computer while the power supply is on.
  4. In the event of a malfunction, do not use the equipment until the arrival of the master.
  5. Do not allow dirt, water or other substances to enter the equipment that could harm the device and render it unusable.
  6. If the device becomes hot, it emits strange sounds, does not scan, etc., do not try to repair it yourself.

How to use a copier on an MFP

MFP is a device that combines the capabilities of the copier, scanner and printer.

In order to make photocopying, the MFP must be connected to the mains, but it does not have to be connected to the computer.

Place the required document under the equipment cover, press the " Start»On the case and the device will give you a sheet with a scanned and printed copy.

It should be noted that photocopying implies obtaining one or more exact copies on paper.

What to do if the scanner won't scan

First of all, see if it is connected to your personal computer. Connecting wires not damaged.

Try restarting your device and PC. If the scanner still does not work, call your equipment workshop.
